Abstract:Phylogenetic relationships among hominins provide a necessary framework for assessing their evolution. Reconstructing these relationships hinges on the strength of the character data analyzed. The phylogenetic position of Ardipithecus ramidus is critical to understanding early hominin evolution, and while many accept that it is most likely the sister taxon to all later hominins, others have argued that Ar. ramidus was ancestral to Pan. Although the study by Strait and Grine (2004) suggested the former, available evidence permitted only 26% of characters in their matrix to be assessed for Ar. ramidus. Fossils described subsequently by Suwa, White and colleagues in 2009 have enabled the number of characters that can be coded for this species to be expanded to 78% of the matrix. Here, we incorporate these new character data to evaluate their impact on the phylogenetic relationships of Ar. ramidus. Moreover, we have further revised the Strait and Grine (2004) matrix as necessitated by additions to the hypodigms of other fossil taxa. This updated matrix was analyzed using both parsimony and Bayesian techniques in a sequence of four iterative steps to independently evaluate the impact of matrix and expanded character revisions on tree topology. Despite the new data and matrix revisions, tree topology has remained remarkably stable. The addition of new craniodental material has served to markedly strengthen the support for the placement of Ar. ramidus as being derived relative to Sahelanthropus, and as the sister taxon of all later hominins. These findings support the phylogenetic hypothesis originally proposed by White and colleagues in 1994. This updated matrix provides a basis for the assessment of additional extinct species.
Deduction of the Age of the Dali Hominin Fossil Based on Regional Geomorphic-Sedimentary Evolution

Abstract:Dali hominin, an archaic type of early Homo sapiens, is of great significance to the understanding of the evolutionary processes of Homo sapiens in China. However, its age remains debatable. There developed a series of lacustrine and alluvial terraces both in the northeastern part of the Weihe Basin and in the stretch of the Luo River near the Dali hominin site, and the Dali hominin cranium fossil was yielded from the basal alluvium of T-3 of the Luo River. The paper first adopted the loess-paleosol sequence dating method to determine the age of each terrace, in order to delineate the history of the regional paleolake regression-transgression cycles. Then, in combination with the characteristics of the geomorphic-sedimentary body bearing the Dali hominin fossil, the paper verified which paleolake regression-transgression cycle is represented by the fossil-bearing deposits. Last, based on grain-size and pollen evidences from this geomorphic -sedimentary body, the paper deduced the age of the cranium-bearing bed. The results show that there occurred several paleolake regressions and river down-cutting events when S-14, L-9, L-6, S-2, L-2 and L-1SS developed or accumulated respectively, and that the alluvium bearing the cranium fossil was deposited after the paleolake regression in the late stage of L-6 deposition. This regression caused parts of the paleolake bed to emerge subaerially and the Luo River subsequently flowed over it, eroding the lacustrine sediment and depositing alluvium. The deposition of this alluvium was therefore probably synchronous with the development of S-5, with a mean age of similar to 550 ka. By comparison with Homo heidelbergensis at Mauer (Germany) in both the living paleoenvironment and the age, the paper found that both hominin may be penecontemporaneous. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. LEAKEY & Fred SPOOR Geometric morphometric analyses are used to examine the maxillary shape of the Kenyanthropus platyops Leakey, Spoor, Brown, Gathogo, Kiarie, Leakey & McDougall, 2001 holotype KNM-WT 40000 and the Australopithecus deyiremeda Haile-Selassie, Gilbert, Melillo, Ryan, Alene, Deino, Levin, Scott & Saylor, 2015 holotype BRT-VP-3/1, expanding on the work of Spoor et al. (2010, 2016) by using more accurate data and a larger comparative sample. The main objective is to assess whether these two specimens differ from the contemporary taxon Australopithecus afarensis Johanson, White & Coppens, 1978 and more broadly from species of Australopithecus Dart, 1925 and Paranthropus Broom, 1938, as well as from each other. Five two-dimensional landmarks recorded on virtual models obtained from computed tomography scans quantify key features of the maxilla used in the differential diagnoses of K. platyops and A. deyiremeda . Principal component analyses were performed to describe shape differences, and the magnitudes of these differences and their statistical significance were assessed using Procrustes and Mahalanobis distances, respectively. The maxillary shapes of both KNM-WT 40000 and BRT-VP-3/1 are significantly different from A. afarensis , the former more so than the latter, and they differ from A. afarensis in dissimilar ways. Where KNM-WT 40000 has a more anterosuperiorly positioned zygomatic process with a longer, more orthognathic, and transversely flat subnasal clivus than A. afarensis , the shape difference of BRT-VP-3/1 is best described as a posterior shift (retraction) of the entire dental arcade. The findings of this study quantitatively support the species status of K. platyops and A. deyiremeda , and corroborate the notion that hominin diversity extended well into the mid-Pliocene of eastern Africa. Abstract:The origin of Australopithecus, the genus widely interpreted as ancestral to Homo, is a central problem in humanevolutionary studies. Australopithecus species differ markedly from extant African apes and candidate ancestral hominidssuch as Ardipithecus, Orrorin and Sahelanthropus. The earliest described Australopithecus species is Au. anamensis, theprobable chronospecies ancestor of Au. afarensis. Here we describe newly discovered fossils from the Middle Awashstudy area that extend the known Au. anamensis range into northeastern Ethiopia. The new fossils are fromchronometrically controlled stratigraphic sequences and date to about 4.1–4.2million years ago. They include diagnosticcraniodental remains, the largest hominid canine yet recovered, and the earliest Australopithecus femur. These newfossils are sampled from a woodland context. Temporal and anatomical intermediacy between Ar. ramidus andAu. afarensis suggest a relatively rapid shift from Ardipithecus to Australopithecus in this region of Africa, involving eitherreplacement or accelerated phyletic evolution.

Expanded Distance-based Phylogenetic Analyses of Fossil Homo Skull Shape Evolution

Abstract:Analyses of a set of 47 fossil and 4 modern skulls using phylogenetic geometric morphometric methods corroborate and refine earlier results. These include evidence that the African Iwo Eleru skull, only about 12,000 years old, indeed represents a new species of near human. In contrast, the earliest known anatomically modern human skull, Qafzeh 9, the skull of Eve from Israel/Palestine, is validated as fully modern in form. Analyses clearly show evidence of archaic introgression into Gravettian, pre_Gravettian, Qafzeh, and Upper Cave (China) populations of near modern humans, and in about that order of increasing archaic content. The enigmatic Saldahna (Elandsfontein) skull emerges as a probable first representative of that lineage, which exclusive of Neanderthals that, eventually lead to modern humans. There is also evidence that the poorly dated Kabwe (Broken Hill) skull represents a much earlier distinct lineage. The clarity of the results bode well for quantitative statistical phylogenetic methods making significant inroads in the stalemates of paleoanthropology.

Abstract:Abstract Homo naledi displays a combination of features across the skeleton not found in any other hominin taxon, which has hindered attempts to determine its placement within the hominin clade. Using geometric morphometrics, we assess the morphology of the mandibular premolars of the species at the enamel-dentine junction (EDJ). Comparing with specimens of Paranthropus, Australopithecus and Homo ( n = 97), we find that the H. naledi premolars from the Dinaledi chamber consistently display a suite of traits (e.g., tall crown, well-developed P 3 and P 4 metaconid, strongly developed P 3 mesial marginal ridge, and a P 3 > P 4 size relationship) that distinguish them from known hominin groups. Premolars from a second locality, the Lesedi Chamber, are consistent with this morphology. We also find that two specimens from South Africa, SK 96 (usually attributed to Paranthropus ) and Stw 80 ( Homo sp.), show similarities to the species, and we discuss a potential evolutionary link between H. naledi and hominins from Sterkfontein and Swartkrans.

Abstract:Since discovery and description of the species, Sahelanthropus tchadensis has been at the centre of a great discussion around its classification as a hominin – the first of our lineage – or an ape. Many studies have been conducted in order to clarify this question, especially studies based on the morphology of the cranium and the post-cranial remains. In this study, we analysed the posterior dentition of S. tchadensis in relation to those of other hominins and chimpanzees, using a multivariate comparative metric analysis. Our results suggest that the posterior dentition of the Chad material lies in the range of well-established early Plio-Pleistocene hominins, supporting its classification as part of the hominin lineage.

Abstract:Abstract The phylogenetic position of Homo habilis is central to debates over the origin and early evolution of the genus Homo . A large portion of the species hypodigm consists of dental remains, but they have only been studied at the often worn enamel surface. We investigate the morphology of the H. habilis enamel-dentine junction (EDJ), which is preserved in cases of moderate tooth wear and known to carry a strong taxonomic signal. Geometric morphometrics is used to characterise dentine crown shape and size across the entire mandibular and maxillary tooth rows, compared with a broad comparative sample ( n = 712). We find that EDJ morphology in H. habilis is for the most part remarkably primitive, supporting the hypothesis that the H. habilis hypodigm has more in common with Australopithecus than later Homo . Additionally, the chronologically younger specimen OH 16 displays a suite of derived features; its inclusion in H. habilis leads to excessive levels of variation.

Abstract:There has been a long debate about the possibility of multiple contemporaneous species of Australopithecus in both eastern and southern Africa, potentially exhibiting different forms of bipedal locomotion. Here, we describe the previously unreported morphology of the os coxae in the 3.67 Ma Australopithecus prometheus StW 573 from Sterkfontein Member 2, comparing it with variation in ossa coxae in living humans and apes as well as other Plio-Pleistocene hominins. Statistical comparisons indicate that StW 573 and 431 resemble humans in their anteroposteriorly great iliac crest breadth compared with many other early australopiths, whereas Homo ergaster KNM WT 15000 surprisingly also has a relatively anterioposteriorly short iliac crest. StW 573 and StW 431 appear to resemble humans in having a long ischium compared with Sts 14 and KNM WT 15000. A Quadratic Discriminant Function Analysis of morphology compared with other Plio-Pleistocene hominins and a dataset of modern humans and hominoids shows that, while Lovejoy's heuristic model of the Ardipithecus ramidus os coxae falls with Pongo or in an indeterminate group, StW 573 and StW 431 from Sterkfontein Member 4 are consistently classified together with modern humans. Although clearly exhibiting the classic "basin shaped" bipedal pelvis, Sts 14 (also from Sterkfontein), AL 288-1 Australopithecus afarensis, MH2 Australopithecus sediba and KNM-WT 15000 occupy a position more peripheral to modern humans, and in some analyses are assigned to an indeterminate outlying group. Our findings strongly support the existence of two species of Australopithecus at Sterkfontein and the variation we observe in os coxae morphology in early hominins is also likely to reflect multiple forms of bipedality.
A 4.3-million-year-old Australopithecus anamensis mandible from Ileret, East Turkana, Kenya, and its paleoenvironmental context

Abstract:A hominin mandible, KNM-ER 63000, and associated vertebrate remains were recovered in 2011 from Area 40 in East Turkana, Kenya. Tephrostratigraphic and magnetostratigraphic analyses indicate that these fossils date to ∼4.3 Ma. KNM-ER 63000 consists of articulating but worn and weathered mandibular corpora, with a broken right M2 crown and alveoli preserved at other tooth positions. Despite extensive damage, KNM-ER 63000 preserves diagnostic anatomy permitting attribution to Australopithecus anamensis. It can be distinguished from Australopithecus afarensis by its strongly inclined symphyseal axis with a basally convex, 'cut-away' external surface, a lateral corpus that sweeps inferomedially beneath the canine-premolar row, and alignment of the canine alveolus with the postcanine axis. KNM-ER 63000 is distinguished from Ardipithecus ramidus by its thick mandibular corpus and large M2 crown. The functional trait structure and enamel's stable carbon isotopic composition of the Area 40 large-mammal community suggests an environment comparable to Kanapoi and other ∼4.5-4 Ma eastern African sites that would have offered Au. anamensis access to both C3 and C4 food resources. With an age of ∼4.3 Ma, KNM-ER 63000 is the oldest known specimen of Au. anamensis, predating the Kanapoi and Asa Issie samples by at least ∼100 kyr. This specimen extends the known temporal range of Au. anamensis and places it in temporal overlap with fossils of Ar. ramidus from Gona, Ethiopia. The morphology of KNM-ER 63000 indicates that the reconfigured masticatory system differentiating basal hominins from the earliest australopiths existed in the narrow temporal window, if any, separating the two. The very close temporal juxtaposition of these significant morphological and adaptive differences implies that Ar. ramidus was a relative rather than a direct phyletic ancestor of earliest Australopithecus.
Extended Distance-based Phylogenetic Analyses Applied to 3D Homo Fossil Skull Evolution

Abstract:This article shows how 3D geometric morphometric data can be analyzed using newly developed distance-based evolutionary tree inference methods, with extensions to planar graphs. Application of these methods to 3D representations of the skullcap (calvaria) of 13 diverse skulls in the genus Homo, ranging from Homo erectus (ergaster) at about 1.6 mya, all the way forward to modern humans, yields a remarkably clear phylogenetic tree. Various evolutionary hypotheses are tested. Results of these tests include rejection of the monophyly of Homo heidelbergensis, the Multi-Regional hypothesis, and the hypothesis that the unusual 12,000 year old (12kya) Iwo Eleru skull represents a modern human. Rather, by quantitative phylogenetic analyses the latter is seen to be an old (200-400kya) lineage that probably represents a novel African species, Homo iwoelerueensis. It diverged after the lineage leading to Neanderthals, and may have been driven to extinction in the last 10kya by modern humans, Homo sapiens, another African species of Homo that appeared about 100kya. Another enigmatic skull, Qafzeh 6 from the Middle East about 90kya, appears to be a hybrid of two thirds near, but not, anatomically modern human and one third of an archaic lineage diverging close to classic European Neanderthals. Overall, the tree clearly implies an accelerating rate of skullcap shape change, and by extension, change of the underlying brain, over the last 400kya in Africa. This acceleration may have extended right up to the origin of modern humans. Methods of distance-based evolutionary tree inference are refined and extended, with particular attention to diagnosing the model and achieving a better fit. This includes power transformations of the input data which favor root Procrustes distances.

Abstract:The Dicynodontia (Therapsida: Anomodontia) is one of the most successful Permo-Triassic terrestrial tetrapod clades and the oldest specimens are recorded from the middle Permian Eodicynodon Assemblage Zone of South Africa. Their fossil record is abundant and species-rich across Pangea. By contrast, the fossil record of the basal-most anomodonts, which includes non-dicynodont anomodonts and early forms of dicynodonts, is patchy and their morphology and phylogeny are deduced from relatively few specimens. Discovered in 1982 and described in 1990, the holotype of Eodicynodon oelofseni (NMQR 2913) is one of the better-preserved early anomodont specimens. However, it has been suggested that E. oelofseni does not belong to the genus Eodicynodon . Here, using CT-scanning and 3D modeling, the skull of Eodicynodon oelofseni , Patranomodon nyaphulii and Eodicynodon oosthuizeni are redescribed. In the framework of this study, the application of 3D scanning technology to describe anatomical structures which were previously inaccessible in these fossils has enabled detailed redescription of the cranial morphology of the basal anomodonts Patranomodon , Eodicynodon oelofseni and E. oosthuizeni and led to a greater understanding of their cranial morphology and phylogenetic relationships. Based on an anatomical comparison and phylogenetic analyses (Bayesian and cladistics) the phylogenetic relationships of basal anomodonts are reassessed and it is suggested that NMQR 2913 does not belong to the genus Eodicynodon but likely represents a separate genus basal to other dicynodonts. A new genus is erected for NMQR 2913. This presents one of the first applications of Bayesian Inference of phylogeny on Therapsida.

Abstract:Abstract Childhood is an ontogenetic stage unique to the modern human life history pattern. It enables the still dependent infants to achieve an extended rapid brain growth, slow somatic maturation, while benefitting from provisioning, transitional feeding, and protection from other group members. This tipping point in the evolution of human ontogeny likely emerged from early Homo. The GAR IVE hemi-mandible (1.8 Ma, Melka Kunture, Ethiopia) represents one of the rarely preserved early Homo infants (~ 3 years at death), recovered in a richly documented Oldowan archaeological context. Yet, based on the sole external inspection of its teeth, GAR IVE was diagnosed with a rare genetic disease–amelogenesis imperfecta (AI)–altering enamel. Since it may have impacted the child’s survival, this diagnosis deserves deeper examination. Here, we reassess and refute this diagnosis and all associated interpretations, using an unprecedented multidisciplinary approach combining an in-depth analysis of GAR IVE (synchrotron imaging) and associated fauna. Some of the traits previously considered as diagnostic of AI can be better explained by normal growth or taphonomy, which calls for caution when diagnosing pathologies on fossils. We compare GAR IVE’s dental development to other fossil hominins, and discuss the implications for the emergence of childhood in early Homo .

Mandibular molar root and pulp cavity morphology in Homo naledi and other Plio-Pleistocene hominins

Abstract:The craniomandibular morphology of Homo naledi shows variable resemblances with species across Homo, which confounds an easy assessment of its phylogenetic position. In terms of skull shape, H. naledi has its closest affinities with Homo erectus, while mandibular shape places it closer to early Homo. From a tooth crown perspective, the smaller molars of H. naledi make it distinct from early Homo and H. erectus. Here, we compare the mandibular molar root morphology of six H. naledi individuals from the Dinaledi Chamber to those of African and Eurasian Plio-Pleistocene fossil hominins (totalling 183 mandibular first, second and third molars). The analysis of five root metric variables (cervical plane area, root length, root cervix volume, root branch volume, and root surface area) derived from microCT reconstructions reveals that the molar roots of H. naledi are smaller than those of Homo habilis, Homo rudolfensis, and H. erectus, but that they resemble those of three Homo sp. specimens from Swartkrans and Koobi Fora in size and overall appearance. Moreover, though H. naledi molar roots are similar in absolute size to Pleistocene Homo sapiens, they differ from H. sapiens in having a larger root volume for a given cervical plane area and less taurodont roots; the root cervix-to-branch proportions of H. naledi are comparable to those of Australopithecus africanus and species of Paranthropus. H. naledi also shares a metameric root volume pattern (M2 > M3 > M1) with Australopithecus and Paranthropus but not with any of the other Homo species (M2 > M1 > M3). Our findings therefore concur with previous studies that found that H. naledi shares plesiomorphic features with early Homo, Australopithecus, and Paranthropus. While absolute molar root size aligns H. naledi with Homo from North and South Africa, it is distinguishable from these in terms of root volumetric proportions.

Abstract:One of the hottest scientific issues in paleoanthropology currently focuses on the origin of modern humans and much more attention is paid to the fossil hominin records of the early Late Pleistocene because it is a critical time for the radiations of modern humans.Recently,the fragmentary human remains (an anterior mandible and two molars) and abundant coexisting fossil mammals were unearthed from the Zhiren Cave (22°17′13.6″N,107°30′45.1″E) of Mulan Mountain,Chongzuo,Guangxi of Southern China.The human remains are securely dated by U-series on overlying flowstones and associated faunal analysis to the initial Late Pleistocene,ca.110ka.As such,they are the oldest modern human fossils in East Asia and predate by ＞60,000 years the oldest previously known modern human remains in the region.A large variety and amount of mammalian fossils were collected from the Zhiren Cave after two times of trial and systematic excavations.The Zhiren fauna is composed of 55 species (21 large mammals and 34 small mammals).In this study the proboscidean remains from this site are systematically described as Elephas kiangnanensis and first occurring Elephas maixmus based on the dental morphology,such as plate number,lamellar frequency and enamel thickness.Recent studies reveal that three turnovers occurred in the proboscidean radiations during Quaternary in Southern China.The genus,Sinomastodon was once prevalent during the Early Pleistocene,and became one of the typical members of the Gigantopithecus-Sinomastodon fauna.It became extinct at the end of the Early Pleistocene,and was replaced by Stegodon orientalis,a main member of the Ailuropoda-Stegodon fauna (s.s.) during the Middle Pleistocene.The appearance of Elaphas kiangnanensis until the late Middle Pleistocene changed the features of the Ailuropoda-Stegodon fauna,and Elaphas maximus gradually became dominant during the Late Pleistocene.Due to the absence of the typical Early or Middle Pleistocene members of Southern China,such as Sinomastodon and Stegodon,the Zhiren fauna bears the transitional characteristics of the typical Middle Pleistocene Ailuropoda-Stegodon fauna (s.s.) and Late Pleistocene Asian elephant fauna.The Zhiren fauna lacks the typical members of forest type of Southern China,such as Ailuropoda,Stegodon and Rhizomys,and probably indicates a biological event from Elephas kiangnanensis to Elephas maixmus,which is possibly related to origin of early modern human caused by climate transition.Both shrub-dwelling and grass-dwelling animal species are comparatively numerous from Zhiren fauna,indicating the forest was shrinking while the shrub and grassland were expanding at that time.This was probably the result of comparatively drier climate at that time.
Morphological and morphometric analyses of a late Middle Pleistocene hominin mandible from Hualongdong, China

Abstract:Excavations in Hualongdong (HLD), East China, have yielded abundant hominin fossils dated to 300 ka. There is a nearly complete mandible that fits well with a partial cranium, and together they compose the skull labeled as HLD 6. Thus far, detailed morphological description and comparisons of the mandible have not been conducted. Here we present a comprehensive morphological, metric, and geometric morphometric assessment of this mandible and compare it with both adult and immature specimens of Pleistocene hominins and recent modern humans. Results indicate that the HLD 6 mandible exhibits a mosaic morphological pattern characterized by a robust corpus and relatively gracile symphysis and ramus. The moderately developed mental trigone and a clear anterior mandibular incurvation of the HLD 6 mandible are reminiscent of Late Pleistocene hominin and recent modern human morphology. However, the weak expression of all these features indicates that this mandible does not possess a true chin. Moreover, a suite of archaic features that resemble those of Middle Pleistocene hominins includes pronounced alveolar planum, superior transverse torus, thick corpus, a pronounced endocondyloid crest, and a well-developed medial pterygoid tubercle. The geometric morphometric analysis further confirms the mosaic pattern of the HLD 6 mandible. The combination of both archaic and modern human features identified in the HLD 6 mandible is unexpected, given its late Middle Pleistocene age and differs from approximately contemporaneous Homo members such as Xujiayao, Penghu, and Xiahe. This mosaic pattern has never been recorded in late Middle Pleistocene hominin fossil assemblages in East Asia. The HLD 6 mandible provides further support for the high morphological diversity during late Middle Pleistocene hominin evolution. With these findings, it is possible that modern human morphologies are present as early as 300 ka and earlier than the emergence of modern humans in East Asia.
Astragalar morphology of late Eocene anthropoids from the Fayum Depression (Egypt) and the origin of catarrhine primates

Abstract:The phylogenetic relationships of the late Eocene anthropoids Catopithecus browni and Proteopithecus sylviae are currently a matter of debate, with opinion divided as to whether these taxa are stem or crown anthropoids. The phylogenetic position of Catopithecus is of particular interest, for, unlike the highly generalized genus Proteopithecus, this taxon shares apomorphic dental and postcranial features with more derived undoubted catarrhines that appear in the same region 1-2 Ma later. If these apomorphies are homologous and Catopithecus is a stem catarrhine, the unique combination of plesiomorphic and apomorphic features preserved in this anthropoid would have important implications for our understanding of the crown anthropoid morphotype and the pattern of morphological character transformations that occurred during the early phases of stem catarrhine evolution.Well-preserved astragali referrable to Proteopithecus, Catopithecus, and the undoubted early Oligocene stem catarrhine Aegyptopithecus have provided additional morphological evidence that allows us to further evaluate competing hypotheses of interrelationships among Eocene-Oligocene Afro-Arabian anthropoids. Qualitative observations and multivariate morphometric analyses reveal that the astragalar morphology of Proteopithecus is very similar to that of early Oligocene parapithecids and living and extinct small-bodied platyrrhines, and strengthens the hypothesis that the morphological pattern shared by these taxa is primitive within crown Anthropoidea. In contrast, Catopithecus departs markedly from the predicted crown anthropoid astragalar morphotype and shares a number of apomorphic features (e.g., deep cotylar fossa, laterally projecting fibular facet, trochlear asymmetry, mediolaterally wide astragalar head) with Aegyptopithecus and Miocene-Recent catarrhines. The evidence from the astragalus complements other independent data from the dentition, humerus and femur of Catopithecus that support this taxon's stem catarrhine status, and we continue to maintain that oligopithecines are stem catarrhines that constitute the sister group of a clade containing propliopithecines and Miocene-Recent catarrhines.

Abstract:We describe the most complete postcranial remains of a pathological, large‐bodied sabretooth from the Lower Pliocene site of Langebaanweg 'E' Quarry (South Africa). The skeleton consists of hind limb and vertebral elements that exhibit distinctive exostoses, osteophytes and eburnation. We performed a quantitative morphological comparison of the new postcranial remains found in Langebaanweg, with other Neogene and Quaternary sabretooth and non‐sabretooth felids, consisting of the genera Amphimachairodus, Machairodus, Lokotunjailurus, Dinofelis, Panthera, Homotherium and Smilodon from several sites in Africa, Europe and North America, using principal component analysis and Mosimann transformations. Although the pathological deformation of the remains distorted some of the linear measurements, most of the analysed variables do not contain pathological features, and strongly indicate that the Langebaanweg sabretooth is morphologically closer to Machairodus aphanistus and Lokotunjailurus emageritus than it is to Amphimachairodus giganteus. This indicates that the remains could belong to an undetermined sabretooth species from the Langebaanweg locality. The observed pathologies in the foot and lumbar spine are consistent with diagnostic criteria for severe osteoarthritis (due to maturity), which would have limited limb mobility with severe consequences for hunting success.

Assessing phylogenetic information content and redundancy in hominin craniodental traits

Abstract:Paleoanthropological phylogenetic inference is based on characters assumed to be phylogenetically informative and independent. Yet, our understanding of whether these criteria are met in published character supermatrices is limited. We assess the phylogenetic information content (PHIC) of 107 discrete craniodental traits from a widely-used hominin character matrix. We compare test topologies — inferred by permuting single traits or removing single traits, anatomical units (AUs), and operational taxonomic units — to the baseline topology, inferred from the unmodified matrix. In this dataset, only 31 traits have some degree of PHIC: 23 uniquely informative traits — sufficient, as a set, to closely approach the baseline topology — and eight redundant traits. No single AU, nor the combination of mandibular and dentition AUs, contains sufficient PHIC to approach the baseline topology, and only the maxilla contains more PHIC than expected. Therefore, phylogenetic placements of fossil hominins represented by isolated AUs should be regarded as putative until better-preserved specimens and more informative traits can be incorporated. Given the ubiquity of discrete morphological data in paleontology and that most of the history of life on Earth was only recorded through fossils, our methods should be broadly applicable to phylogenetic inference involving other paleontological clades.
