Abstract:<p>In chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), exacerbations (ECOPD), characterized by an acute deterioration in respiratory symptoms, are fundamental events impacting negatively upon disease progression, comorbidities, wellbeing and mortality. ECOPD also represent the largest component of the socioeconomic burden of COPD. ECOPDs are currently defined as acute worsening of respiratory symptoms that require additional therapy. Definitions that require worsening of dyspnoea and sputum volume/purulence assume that acute infections, especially respiratory viral infections, and/or exposure to pollutants are the main cause of ECOPD. But other factors may contribute to ECOPD, such as the exacerbation of other respiratory diseases and non‐respiratory diseases (e.g., heart failure, thromboembolism). The complexity of worsening dyspnoea has suggested a need to improve the definition of ECOPD using objective measurements such as blood counts and C‐reactive protein to improve accuracy of diagnosis and a personalized approach to management. There are three time points when we can intervene to improve outcomes: acutely, to attenuate the length and severity of an established exacerbation; in the aftermath, to prevent early recurrence and readmission, which are common, and in the long‐term, establishing preventative measures that reduce the risk of future events. Acute management includes interventions such as corticosteroids or antibiotics and measures to support the respiratory system, including non‐invasive ventilation (NIV). Current therapies are broad and better understanding of clinical phenotypes and biomarkers may help to establish a more tailored approach, for example in relation to antibiotic prescription. Other unmet needs include effective treatment for viruses, which commonly cause exacerbations. Preventing early recurrence and readmission to hospital is important and the benefits of interventions such as antibiotics or anti‐inflammatories in this period are not established. Domiciliary NIV in those patients who are persistently hypercapnic following discharge and pulmonary rehabilitation can have a positive impact. For long‐term prevention, inhaled therapy is key. Dual bronchodilators reduce exacerbation frequency but in patients with continuing exacerbations, triple therapy should be considered, especially if blood eosinophils are elevated. Other options include phosphodiesterase inhibitors and macrolide antibiotics. ECOPD are a key component of the assessment of COPD severity and future outcomes (quality of life, hospitalisations, health care resource utilization, mortality) and are a central component in pharmacological management decisions. Targeted therapies directed towards specific pathways of inflammation are being explored in exacerbation prevention, and this is a promising avenue for future research.</p>

Visual Odometry with Dense Probabilistic Egomotion Estimation

Abstract:We present a novel approach to 6D visual odometry for vehicles with calibrated stereo cameras. A dense probabilistic egomotion (5D) method is combined with robust stereo feature based approaches and Extended Kalman Filtering (EKF) techniques to provide high quality estimates of vehicle’s angular and linear velocities. Experimental results show that the proposed method compares favorably with state-the-art approaches, mainly in the estimation of the angular velocities, where significant improvements are achieved.

Abstract:Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a common but underdiagnosed lung condition that is frequently managed inappropriately. It impacts poorest communities most, where health inequalities are greatest. New acute symptoms of breathlessness, cough, sputum production and wheeze should prompt clinical suspicion of underlying COPD in someone who is a current or ex-smoker (or has exposure to other risk factors) and be followed by referral for quality-assured spirometry once recovered. Management of COPD exacerbations in primary care includes use of short-acting bronchodilators if mild, and antibiotics and a short course of oral prednisolone if moderate/severe. Hospital at home schemes are safe and effective and should be considered for some patients exacerbating in the community; these are increasingly supported by remote monitoring ('virtual wards'). New or worsening hypoxia is an indication for hospital admission and therefore oxygen saturation monitoring is an important part of exacerbation management; clinicians should be aware of patient safety alerts around use of pulse oximeters. Exacerbations drive poor health status and lung function decline and therefore asking about exacerbation frequency at planned reviews and taking action to reduce these is an important part of long-term COPD care. An exacerbation is an opportunity to ensure that fundamentals of good care are addressed. Patients should be supported to understand and act on exacerbations through a supported self-management plan; prompt treatment is beneficial but should be balanced by careful antibiotic and corticosteroid stewardship. COPD rescue packs on repeat prescription are not recommended.

Abstract:Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major health problem with high prevalence, rising incidence, and substantial morbidity and mortality. Its course is punctuated by acute episodes of increased respiratory symptoms, termed exacerbations of COPD (ECOPD). ECOPD are important events in the natural history of the disease as they are associated with lung function decline and prolonged negative effects on quality of life. The present-day therapy of ECOPD with short courses of antibiotics, steroids, and escalation of bronchodilators has resulted in only modest improvements in outcomes. Recent data indicate that ECOPD are heterogeneous, raising the need to identify distinct etio-endo-phenotypes, incorporating traits of the acute event and of patients who experience recurrent events, to develop novel and targeted therapies. These characterizations can provide a complete clinical picture, the severity of which will dictate acute pharmacological treatment, and may also indicate whether a change in maintenance therapy is needed to reduce the risk of future exacerbations. This review discusses the latest knowledge of ECOPD types based on clinical presentation, etiology, natural history, frequency, severity, and biomarkers in an attempt to characterize these events.

Abstract:Acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) is the exacerbation of a range of respiratory symptoms during the stable phase of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). AECOPD is thus a dangerous stage and key event in the course of COPD, as its deterioration and frequency seriously affects the quality of life of patients and shortens their survival. Acute exacerbations occur and develop due to many factors such as infection, tobacco smoke inhalation, air pollution, comorbidities, airflow limitation, various biomarkers, history of previous deterioration, natural killer cell abnormalities, immunoglobulin G deficiency, genetics, abnormal muscle and nutritional status, negative psychology, and seasonal temperature changes. There is relatively limited research on the impact of the role of standardized management on the alleviation of AECOPD. However, with the establishment of relevant prevention and management systems and the promotion of artificial intelligence technology and Internet medical approaches, long-term effective and standardized management of COPD patients may help to achieve the quality of life and disease prognosis in COPD patients and reduce the risk of AE.
Management of Acute Exacerbations of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: A Summary and Appraisal of Published Evidence

Abstract:PURPOSE: To review critically the available data on diagnostic evaluation, risk stratification, and therapeutic management of patients with acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).DATA SOURCES: English-language articles were identified by searching MEDLINE (1966 to 2000, week 5), EMBASE (1974 to 2000, week 18), HealthStar (1975 to June 2000), and the Cochrane Controlled Trials Register (2000, Issue 1).STUDY SELECTION: The best available evidence on each subtopic was selected for analysis. Randomized trials, sometimes buttressed by cohort studies, were used to evaluate therapeutic interventions. Cohort studies were used to evaluate diagnostic tests and risk stratification.DATA EXTRACTION: Study design and results were summarized in evidence tables. Individual studies were rated by internal validity, external validity, and quality of design. Statistical analyses of combined data were not performed.DATA SYNTHESIS: Data on the utility of most diagnostic tests are limited. However, chest radiography and arterial blood gas sampling seem useful while acute spirometry does not. Identifiable clinical variables are associated with risk for relapse and risk for death after hospitalization for an acute exacerbation. Evidence of efficacy was found for bronchodilators, corticosteroids, and noninvasive positive-pressure ventilation. There is also support for the use of antibiotics in patients with more severe exacerbations. On the basis of limited data, mucolytics and chest physiotherapy do not seem to be of benefit, and oxygen supplementation seems to increase the risk for respiratory failure only in an identifiable subgroup of patients.CONCLUSIONS: Although suggestions for appropriate management can be made on the basis of available evidence, the supporting literature is scarce and further high-quality research is necessary. Such research will require an improved, generally acceptable, and transportable definition of acute exacerbation of COPD, as well as improved methods for observing and measuring outcomes.

Abstract:The purpose of this article is to provide a general review of the current literature on the factors associated with the outcomes of hospitalizations, survival and health-related quality of life in acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD), highlighting the limitations and the complexities in interpretation of the results of current studies. There is no consensus definition for AECOPD; onsets may be difficult to define and the determination of duration elusive. The prevalence of acute exacerbations of COPD (AECOPD) in the community appears to be underestimated as exacerbations are underreported by patients and their doctors. Hospitalization for COPD is due mainly to severe AECOPDs which drive the cost of care. There are few longitudinal epidemiological studies on factors associated with hospitalizations for AECOPD. The results of current studies do not allow clear differentiation between associations that are predictors of event, the consequences of the event, or indicators of severity. Strategies to reduce severe exacerbations of COPD include pharmacological treatment, vaccinations, pulmonary rehabilitation, and home care programs. The optimal strategy for the reduction of hospitalization in COPD remains unclear. Long-term interventional studies are needed to provide clearer information for the prevention of exacerbations and hospitalizations in COPD.

Abstract:Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Hospitalization due to acute exacerbations of COPD (AECOPD) is a relevant health problem both for its impact on disease outcomes and on health system resources. Severe AECOPD causing acute respiratory failure (ARF) often requires admission to an intensive care unit (ICU) with endotracheal intubation and invasive mechanical ventilation. AECOPD also acts as comorbidity in critically ill patients; this condition is associated with poorer prognoses. The prevalence reported in the literature on ICU admission rates ranges from 2 to 19% for AECOPD requiring hospitalization, with an in-hospital mortality rate of 20-40% and a re-hospitalization rate for a new severe event being 18% of the AECOPD cases admitted to ICUs. The prevalence of AECOPD in ICUs is not properly known due to an underestimation of COPD diagnoses and COPD misclassifications in administrative data. Non-invasive ventilation in acute and chronic respiratory failure may prevent AECOPD, reducing ICU admissions and disease mortality, especially when associated with a life-threating episode of hypercapnic ARF. In this review, we report on up to date evidence from the literature, showing how improving the knowledge and management of AECOPD is still a current research issue and clinical need.

Abstract:COPD: DIAGNOSTIC AND SEVERITY ASSESSMENT. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a frequent and underdiagnosed respiratory disease and a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. It should be suspected in patients aged 40 and over presenting with persistent respiratory symptoms (cough, sputum, shortness of breath, recurrent respiratory tract infections) and a history of exposure to risk factors for the disease (smoking, occupational or domestic exposure to noxious particles). Spirometry is required to confirm the diagnosis of COPD, showing persistent airflow limitation with a post-bronchodilator FEV1/FCV inférieur 0.7. COPD assessment includes: classification of airflow limitation severity with post-bronchodilator FEV1 measurement (GOLD score from 1 to 4), clinical severity assessment (intensity of dyspnea, number and severity of acute exacerbations, impaired quality of life) and evaluation of associated complications (chronic respiratory failure, hypercapnia, pulmonary hypertension). Comorbidities are frequent and should be carefully sought: lung cancer, cardiovascular diseases, metabolic syndrome, skeletal muscle dysfunction, sleep apnea syndrome, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression.

Abstract:Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is characterized by persistent respiratory symptoms and airflow limitation. Acute exacerbation of COPD (AECOPD) is an acute worsening of respiratory symptoms, which needs additional treatment and can result in worsening health status, increasing risks of hospitalization and mortality. Therefore, it is necessary to early recognize and diagnose exacerbations of COPD. This review introduces the updated definition of COPD exacerbations, the current clinical assessment tools, and the current potential biomarkers. The application of mobile health care in COPD management for early identification and diagnosis is also included in this review.

Abstract:Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a serious pulmonary condition. Many patients experience exacerbations and some require Emergency Room visits and hospitalization. In Portugal, hospitalizations due to COPD between 2009 and 2016 decreased by 8%, but they still represented 8049 hospitalized patients in 2016. Appropriate management of COPD exacerbations presents a clinical challenge and, in order to guide therapy, it is important to identify the underlying cause; however, this is not possible in about a third of severe COPD exacerbations. There are several diagnostic tools that can be used to assess an exacerbation and its severity, which will in turn guide treatment, and prognostic scores should be used to predict the risk of future exacerbations. After an exacerbation is appropriately managed, a suitable discharge plan should be prepared. This should generally include reclassification of the patient according to GOLD criteria, optimization of pharmacological therapy, management of comorbidities, patient (or caregiver) education on the correct use of medications, referral to a Pulmonology Outpatient Clinic, if they are not already attending one, and a smoking cessation and respiratory rehabilitation program. In this paper, we will focus on the pharmacological strategies for the management of COPD exacerbations, risk stratification and a hospital discharge plan proposal.

We aimed to establish a consensus list of symptoms, physiological measures, clinical scores, patient questionnaires and investigations to be obtained at time of hospitalised COPD exacerbation and follow-up. Methods: A modified Delphi online survey with pre-defined consensus of importance, feasibility and frequency of measures at hospitalisation and follow-up of a COPD exacerbation was undertaken. Findings: A total of 25 COPD experts from 18 countries contributed to all 3 rounds of the survey. Experts agreed that a detailed history and examination were needed. Experts also agreed on which treatments are needed and how soon these should be delivered. Experts recommended that a full blood count, renal function, C-reactive protein and cardiac blood biomarkers (BNP and troponin) should be measured within 4 hours of admission and that the modified Medical Research Council dyspnoea scale (mMRC) and COPD assessment test (CAT) should be performed at time of exacerbation and follow-up. Experts encouraged COPD clinicians to strongly consider discussing palliative care, if indicated, at time of hospitalisation. Interpretation: This Europe-wide consensus document is the first attempt to standardise the assessment and care of patients hospitalised for COPD exacerbations. This should be regarded as the starting point to build knowledge and evidence on patients hospitalised for COPD exacerbations. Etiology of Emergency Visit and In-Hospital Outcomes of Patients with COPD.

Abstract:Backgrounds. Patients with COPD often visit the emergency department (ED) due to exacerbation of respiratory symptoms (dyspnea, cough, and sputum production). Because manifestations of acute exacerbation of COPD (AECOPD) are nonspecific, differential diagnosis is critical in this acute setting. The causes for emergency visiting and the in-hospital outcomes are varied in patients with COPD. This study aimed to investigate the distributions of etiologies and the in-hospital outcomes of patients with COPD who presented to the ED because of exacerbation of respiratory symptoms. Methods. This was a retrospective study on COPD patients who had visited the ED and been hospitalized in a tertiary hospital because of worsening respiratory symptoms including cough, sputum production, and dyspnea from January 2017 to April 2020. Demographics, clinical manifestations, and laboratory studies in the ED were collected as the baseline data. The primary diagnosis at discharge or death was recorded. The hospitalization settings (general wards and ICU), the in-hospital outcomes, and associated factors were analyzed. Results. During the study period, 392 patients with COPD (male 302 (77.0%)), with a median age of 78 years, visited the ED and hospitalized in this hospital. The first 3 causes for emergency visit were AECOPD (n = 314, 80.1%), acute coronary artery syndrome with or without congestive heart failure (n = 24, 6.1%), and pulmonary embolism (n = 13, 3.3%). For patients with AECOPD (n = 314), 51.6% (n = 162) was admitted to ICU, and 6.4% (n = 20) died. Multivariate logistic analysis showed that age, atrial fibrillation, NT-pro BNP ≥300 pg/ml, and blood pH <7.3 were independent risk factors for ICU admission. Age, comorbid malignancy, NT-pro BNP ≥1800 pg/ml, and pneumonia on CT scan were independent risk factors for hospital mortality in patients with AECOPD. Conclusion. In COPD patients visiting the ED because of worsening respiratory symptoms, nearly 20% were due to non-AECOPD causes. For those with AECOPD, age, atrial fibrillation, NT-pro BNP ≥300 pg/ml, and blood pH <7.3 were independent risk factors for ICU admission, while advanced age, underlying malignancy, elevated NT-pro BNP, and pneumonia on CT scan were risk factors for hospital mortality.
Mortality and readmission risk for hospitalised patients with acute exacerbation of COPD with and without spirometric obstruction: a longitudinal observational study in China

Abstract:Objective To compare the clinical features and outcomes in patients with pre-chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and COPD hospitalised for confirmed or suspected acute exacerbation of COPD (AECOPD). Design A multicentre, longitudinal observational cohort study. Setting Data were obtained from the AECOPD Inpatient Registry Study in China. Participants 5896 patients hospitalised for AECOPD between 2017 and 2021. Outcomes Patients were divided into the COPD (n=5201) and pre-COPD (n=695) groups according to the lung function test results. The outcomes of interest included all-cause, respiratory disease-related and cardiovascular disease-related deaths as well as readmissions within 30 days and 12 months after discharge. Cumulative incidence functions were used to estimate the risk of cause-specific mortality and readmission. Multivariate hazard function models were used to determine the association between lung function and outcomes. Results There were significant between-group differences in the symptoms at admission and medication use during hospitalisation. However, there was no significant between-group difference in the 30-day all-cause mortality (0.00 vs 2.23/1000 person-month (pm), p=0.6110) and readmission (33.52 vs 30.64/1000 pm, p=0.7175). Likewise, the 30-day and 12-month cause-specific outcomes were not significantly different between groups (30-day readmission with acute exacerbation (AE): 26.07 vs 25.11/1000 pm; 12-month all-cause mortality: 0.20 vs 0.93/1000 pm; all-cause readmission: 11.49 vs 13.75/1000 pm; readmission with AE: 9.15 vs 11.64/1000 pm, p>0.05 for all comparisons). Cumulative incidence curves revealed no significant between-group differences in the 30-day and 12-month prognosis (p>0.05). Multivariate analysis revealed no significant association of lung function categories with 30-day and 12-month mortality or readmission (p>0.05 for all effect estimations). Conclusions Patients with pre-COPD have mild symptoms and similar risks for mortality and readmission during follow-up as patients with COPD. Patients with pre-COPD should receive optimal therapies before the occurrence of irreversible damage.

Abstract:Despite substantial progress in reducing the global impact of many non-communicable diseases, including heart disease and cancer, morbidity and mortality due to chronic respiratory disease continues to increase. This increase is driven primarily by the growing burden of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and has occurred despite the identification of cigarette smoking as the major risk factor for the disease more than 50 years ago. Many factors have contributed to what must now be considered a public health emergency: failure to limit the sale and consumption of tobacco products, unchecked exposure to environmental pollutants across the life course, and the ageing of the global population (partly as a result of improved outcomes for other conditions). Additionally, despite the heterogeneity of COPD, diagnostic approaches have not changed in decades and rely almost exclusively on post-bronchodilator spirometry, which is insensitive for early pathological changes, underused, often misinterpreted, and not predictive of symptoms. Furthermore, guidelines recommend only simplistic disease classification strategies, resulting in the same therapeutic approach for patients with widely differing conditions that are almost certainly driven by variable pathophysiological mechanisms. And, compared with other diseases with similar or less morbidity and mortality, the investment of financial and intellectual resources from both the public and private sector to advance understanding of COPD, reduce exposure to known risks, and develop new therapeutics has been woefully inadequate.

Abstract:Acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) are a frequent cause of hospital admission and are associated with significant morbidity, mortality, high readmission rates and high resource utilization. More accurate prediction of survival and readmission in patients hospitalized with AECOPD should help to optimize clinical management and allocation of resources, including targeting of palliative care and strategies to reduce readmissions. We have reviewed the published retrospective and prospective studies in this field to identify the factors most likely to be of value in predicting in-hospital and post-discharge mortality, and readmission of patients hospitalized for AECOPD. The prognostic factors which appear most important vary with the particular outcome under consideration. In-hospital mortality is related most clearly to the patient's acute physiological state and to the development of acute comorbidity, while post-discharge mortality particularly reflects the severity of the underlying COPD, as well as specific comorbidities, especially cardiac disease. Important factors influencing the frequency of readmission include functional limitation and poor health-related quality of life. Large prospective studies which incorporate all the potentially relevant variables are required to refine prediction of the important outcomes of AECOPD and thus to inform clinical decision making, for example on escalation of care, facilitated discharge and provision of palliative care.

Abstract:Genomic analyses of late-stage human cancers have uncovered deletions encompassing 1p36 , thereby providing an extensive body of literature supporting the idea that a potent tumor suppressor resides in this interval. Although several genes have been proposed as 1p36 candidate tumor suppressors, convincing evidence that their encoded products protect from cancer has been scanty. A recent functional study identified chromodomain helicase DNA-binding protein 5 (CHD5) as a novel tumor suppressor mapping to 1p36. Here, we discuss evidence supporting the tumor-suppressive role of CHD5. Together, these findings suggest that strategies designed to enhance CHD5 activity could provide novel approaches for treating a broad range of human malignancies. [Cancer Res 2008;68(8):2551–6]

Abstract:The real time visualisation of fluorescently tagged proteins in live cells using ever more sophisticated microscopes has greatly increased our understanding of the dynamics of key proteins during fundamental physiological processes such as cell locomotion, chemotaxis, cell division and membrane trafficking. In addition the fractionation of cells and isolation of organelles or known compartments can often verify any subcellular localisation and the use of tagged proteins as bait for the immunoprecipitation of material from cell fractions can identify specific binding partners and multiprotein complexes thereby helping assign a function to the tagged protein. We have successfully applied these techniques to the Dictyostelium discoideum protein TSPOON that is part of an ancient heterohexamer membrane trafficking complex (Hirst et al., 2013). TSPOON is the product of the tstD gene in Dictyostelium and is not required for growth or the developmental cycle in this organism. Dictyostelium amoebae will exist in a vegetative phase where growth is sustained by the phagocytosis of bacteria. When this food source is spent they enter a developmental phase where the amoebae aggregate, via chemotaxis to extracellular waves of cAMP, into multicellular structures that subsequently form a fruiting body containing viable spores (Muller-Taubenberger et al., 2013). In the laboratory this cycle takes less than 24 h to complete and as a further aid to manipulation the requirement for a bacterial food source has been circumvented by the derivatisation of the wild type and isolation of axenic strains that can also grow in a nutrient rich broth. Axenic strains like Ax2 are the mainstay of laboratory research using Dictyostelium (Muller-Taubenberger et al., 2013). A description of Dictyostelium cell cultivation, the generation of cell lines that overexpress TSPOON-GFP and TSPOON null cells, and subsequent analysis (Muller-Taubenberger and Ishikawa-Ankerhold, 2013) is detailed below.

Abstract:Background: Exacerbations of COPD (ECOPD) have a major impact on patients and healthcare systems across the world. Precise estimates of the global burden of ECOPD on mortality and hospital readmission are needed to inform policy makers and aid preventive strategies to mitigate this burden. The aims of the present study were to explore global in-hospital mortality, post-discharge mortality and hospital readmission rates after ECOPD-related hospitalisation using an individual patient data meta-analysis (IPDMA) design. Methods: A systematic review was performed identifying studies that reported in-hospital mortality, post-discharge mortality and hospital readmission rates following ECOPD-related hospitalisation. Data analyses were conducted using a one-stage random-effects meta-analysis model. This study was conducted and reported in accordance with the PRISMA-IPD statement. Results: Data of 65 945 individual patients with COPD were analysed. The pooled in-hospital mortality rate was 6.2%, pooled 30-, 90- and 365-day post-discharge mortality rates were 1.8%, 5.5% and 10.9%, respectively, and pooled 30-, 90- and 365-day hospital readmission rates were 7.1%, 12.6% and 32.1%, respectively, with noticeable variability between studies and countries. Strongest predictors of mortality and hospital readmission included noninvasive mechanical ventilation and a history of two or more ECOPD-related hospitalisations <12 months prior to the index event. Conclusions: This IPDMA stresses the poor outcomes and high heterogeneity of ECOPD-related hospitalisation across the world. Whilst global standardisation of the management and follow-up of ECOPD-related hospitalisation should be at the heart of future implementation research, policy makers should focus on reimbursing evidence-based therapies that decrease (recurrent) ECOPD.
Determination of malachite green and leucomalachite green in trout and carp muscle by liquid chromatography with visible and fluorescence detection.

Abstract:A fast and specific method for determination of malachite green (MG) and its major metabolite leucomalachite green (LMG) in trout and carp muscle is described. MG and LMG residues were extracted from fish muscle with an acetonitrile-buffer mixture and isolated by partitioning into dichloromethane. Extracts were then cleaned up on solid-phase extraction (SPE) columns. Chromatographic separation was achieved by using reverse-phase column with an isocratic mobile phase consisting of acetonitrile and acetate buffer (0.01M, pH 4.1). MG was detected with an absorbance detector (λ= 618 nm), while a fluorescence detector (λ ex = 265 nm and λ em = 370 nm) was used for detection of LMG. Both detectors were connected on-line which allowed simultaneous analysis of a sample extract for MG and LMG. The method was validated according to Commission Decision 2002/657/EC. The mean recoveries of MG and LMG from muscle fortified at three levels (2, 3, 4 μg/kg) were 55% and 74%, respectively. Relative standard deviations of the mean at all fortification levels were less than 15% and 13% for MG and LMG, respectively. With the described method 33 samples of fish bought in local shops and fish farms between August 2004 and April 2005 were analysed. Seven samples showed detectable amounts of residues.
