Abstract:The keynote of the book is found in the preface where it is stated that "the central thesis of the authors is the inextricable interweaving of nursing service with all other branches of human culture." The development of nursing is traced through the record of human history starting with primitive times and ending with the problems facing the world at the conclusion of World War II. Up to the middle of the 19th century, nursing was under the auspices of religious orders. After the Protestant revolt, nursing as a profession for lay people began to take root.

Holistic Nursing Practice

Abstract:The COVID 19 pandemic has had a tremendous impact on nursing and health care delivery systems. Recent research demonstrates a correlation between the stress of providing complex health care and the decline of nurse well-being. Investing in the well-being of nurses can benefit the entire health care system. Educational institutions can play a role in enhancing nurse well-being by incorporating holistic nursing education principles into the curriculum, including reflective practice methods to promote self-awareness and self-care. This may be challenging for some nursing programs, but the Power of Nursing course can help close this gap. This noncommercial course incorporates key elements of holistic nursing including authenticity, empathy, compassion, unconditional acceptance, and self-care; elements not always emphasized in a traditional curriculum. Power of Nursing, offered as an elective in nursing schools or part of nursing residency programs, provides attendees with tools and strategies to boost resilience, strengthen personal commitment to nursing, and increase well-being preparing them to thrive in any health care environment.

Abstract:Flourishing is the highest good of all persons, but hard to achieve in complex societal systems. This challenge is borne out through the lens of the global nursing shortages with its focus on the supply of nurses to meet health system demands. However, nurses and midwives spend a significant part of their lives at work and so the need to pay attention to the conditions that facilitate flourishing at work is important. Drawing on ancient and contemporary philosophies, as well as critical, creative and embodied ways of knowing, enabling a flourishing practice ecosystem will be explored in this paper.

Abstract:The discussion paper synthesises the insights shared during a keynote panel at the 26th International Philosophy of Nursing Conference, themed "Reimagining a nursing ecosystem in an uncertain world." It delves into the substantial impact uncertainty has on nursing, offering innovative strategies for reconceptualization. Through a critical examination of evidence-based practice, the tendency to homogenise nursing is discussed, prompting advocacy for a Nietzschean political framework as a form of resistance and emancipation. Drawing inspiration from Donna Haraway, a transition from individualistic to relational approaches is needed, especially amidst social and economic instability. Furthermore, the integration of caritas and Indigenous epistemologies underscore the significance of cultural sensitivity in nursing. Meanwhile, Ubuntu philosophy champions empathy and collective values, while a convergence of Eastern and Western philosophical traditions promises to enrich nursing practice. Ultimately, the panellists advocate for overcoming rigid ideologies in favour of a pluralistic approaches, ontologies, epistemologies and ethics to address contemporary challenges, and signal for a philosophical reorientation to engage uncertainty and reshape nursing roles in an ever-evolving and world.

Abstract:Heroism is an immutable and quintessential part of what gives rise to the phenomenon that is nurse. This altruistic discourse comes with profound consequences for the nursing profession, particularly in relation to nursing's professional identity. This critical review explores nursing's professional identity against the backdrop of gendered and heroic discourses. Two concept analyses of nursing's professional identity are critically reviewed and juxtaposed with literature on the topic amidst COVID-19. Using poststructural feminism and critical discourse analysis, the review provides valuable insights into the evolutionary significance of the concept and raises key questions around knowledge-power structures and discursive constructions of nurse.

Abstract:Aim To connect selected examples from Florence Nightingale's life with concerns for the distress nurses are experiencing worldwide. Background We live in turbulent times of disease, armed conflict, vast climate change, and social injustice—factors exacerbating illness and impacting health—factors Nightingale also addressed throughout her life. Sources of evidence The Theory of Integral Nursing (TIN) is introduced with related examples of nursing's problems and solutions seen through integral lenses at the individual, group, grassroots, and global levels. Illustrating these points, relevant Nightingale quotes and life narratives illustrate how she responded, in her time, to the challenges we face in our time. Discussion Leading reflections focus on changes needed within nursing's culture to encourage proactive innovations and public advocacy for the challenges nurses face—for nurses to be seen and heard. Conclusion Nurses are a potentially significant force to bring our trusted caring and compassion for suffering into advocacy for a better world. Implications for nursing practice Nightingale's vision for maintaining excellence in 'sick‐nursing' practice is described with a corresponding aim to develop 'health‐nursing' practices to address the causes of illness and injury through public advocacy. Implications for nursing and health policy Recommendations connect Nightingale's hope for future policy leadership with recent global policy calls to sustain positive change within nursing's culture and the global healthcare workforce.

Her theory of integral nursing presents the science and art of nursing. Her coauthored theory of integrative nurse coaching, a middle-range theory, is a framework to guide integrative nurse coaches in nurse coaching practice, education, research, and healthcare policy. Abstract:In this article, we examine external agents' effect on nursing's professional evolution and the consequences for the discipline's collective agency, social contract, and self-regulation. Situated within Foucault's theories of power, we review how the power of organizations reaches into the fabric of everyday life and explore how philanthropic foundations have influenced a diverse array of disciplines, including nursing. Through a genealogic lens, we examine nursing history and professionalization and conclude with concerns surrounding nursing's exercise of its collective agency during one of the most significant, discipline-shaping activities of modern times-Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Future of Nursing initiatives.
Expanding our Nightingale horizon: seven recommendations for 21st-century nursing practice

Abstract:Today's global health problems may seem insurmountable. Antibiotic-resistant microbes are increasing, and more economic, environmental, and social factors are affecting health. Health care costs keep rising. Hot politics and the chronic global nursing shortages all threaten the future of health care delivery. Also, diseases in many war-torn regions clearly place all humanity's health at risk. How can nurses possibly address these larger "global" challenges? To consider this question--and what nurses might do to contribute solutions--this article looks at the wider horizon of health care problems and how Florence Nightingale faced similar bigger health issues in her time. The health problems of today require renewed vision and the participation of committed citizens who take an active role in the promotion of human health-both locally and globally. By learning more about Nightingale's legacy, nurses actually attain a significant breadth and depth of knowledge and skill to share in these endeavors. Based on a review of Nightingale's responses and insights, seven recommendations are shared for consideration. While continuing the practices we have established, nurses can also create new, innovative, and relevant practice arenas, becoming--like she did in her time--global change agents for the sake of human health. From her broader viewpoint, Nightingale passed her global vision to us in order to extend our own horizons of possibility: remembering who we are, considering what we can do, who we care for, and why.

How Grounded Are Our Ideals? Rethinking Nursing's Covenant of Care

Abstract:Covenant has been used to describe the special relationship between nurses and patients yet has been misunderstood in nursing literature. Covenantal elements of keeping promises and nurturing relationship resonate with the work of nursing. However, unlimited devotion puts the nurse at risk for exploitation and burnout. One's conceptualization of covenant is important because it impacts beliefs about allegiance, identity, and responsibilities. This article offers a critical analysis of how the conceptualization of covenant in nursing literature compares to a theological understanding of covenant. The covenantal dimension of a nurse's practice is reframed from the nurse-patient relationship to a professional-societal relationship.

Abstract:Objective: to carry out a theoretical reflection on the Nursing Now Campaign and the experience of the unexpected irruptions facing the pandemic period. Method: a theoretical-reflective study, supported by the theoretical framework of complexity thinking. It aims at understanding the dialogic between the notions of order, disorder and organization, which translate the transition from simplification to complexity of the pandemic phenomenon and its relation to the theme of Nursing Now and Nursing in the future. Results: the universe of phenomena is simultaneously composed of order, disorder and organization. Reasserting the central role of Nursing in the health team, facing the irruptions and uncertainties caused by the current pandemic, implies the ability to dialog with disorder and raise a new and more complex global (re)organization of the being and doing Nursing. Conclusion: in addition to answers, theoretical reflection raises new questions and irruptions. The inseparability between the notions of order and disorder in the evolutionary dynamics of the Nursing system is conceived and the promotion of even more complex levels of organization, management and Nursing assistance to achieve universal access to health is advocated.

Abstract:Despite being considered the proverbial backbone of our healthcare systems, nursing still seems to struggle to scientifically demonstrate its contribution to care experiences and patient outcomes. This leads to erosive tendencies that threaten the development of the profession and its progress as an academic discipline. With this paper, we want to contribute to the theoretical discourse concerning the nature of nursing and the research into its effectiveness. We begin by outlining a set of prevailing paradoxes and their consequences relating to nursing and nursing research: the issue of demonstrating its unique contribution despite a clear societal mandate; a discrepancy between subjectively experienced effectiveness and objectively ascertainable effectiveness; and a mismatch between theoretical premises of nursing and task‐oriented cultures in practice environments. Using an example of a seemingly simple nursing intervention, we intend to demonstrate the qualities and complexities of nursing. We further illustrate this by drawing on several of our research projects using theory‐based evaluation methodologies. From these illustrative examples, we distil two insights relating to nursing interventions that we consider fundamental: the nurse, as a person, is central to its unique effectiveness; and there is always an interplay between context, intervention and its intended effect. We summarise our considerations and argue the case for conceiving research designs in alignment with theoretical premises of nursing.
