Abstract:Nanotechnology advancements have significantly contributed to the development of thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) reverse osmosis membranes for addressing global water scarcity through more efficient separation and purification processes. However, the impact of nanomaterials on membrane preparation, structure, and performance remains insufficiently understood. In this study, graphitic carbon nitride/polydopamine (g-C3N4/PDA) incorporated TFN membrane was proposed and systematically investigated through experimental methods and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The incorporation of g-C3N4/PDA increased the resistance to MPD diffusion during the interfacial polymerization process, the obtained TFN membrane displayed a thinner, smoother active layer and enhanced hydrophilicity. Therefore, the membrane exhibited a remarkable water flux of 53.43 L·m−2·h−1, triple that of the conventional membrane, with a NaCl rejection of 98.9 %. Meanwhile, the TFN membrane displayed excellent antifouling properties against both organic, inorganic and mixed foulants, maintaining a high flux recovery rate during long-term operation. MD simulation further revealed the stable interaction between g-C3N4/PDA nanocomposites and the polyamide matrix, enhancing structural compatibility and improving membrane performance. This study provides insights into the role of nanomaterials in the active layer of the membrane, offering both theoretical and practical guidance for the design of advanced TFN membranes with enhanced water permeance and antifouling performance.

Abstract:CO2 capture and H2 purification are the main challenges in syngas and flue gas processing. Two-dimensional graphdiyne (GDY) membrane, with intrinsic uniform pores, provides a promising candidate but lacks both a design strategy and an atomic understanding for these separations. In this study, for the first time, flexible GDYs are computationally designed with the engineering of various functional groups, namely GDY-H, GDY-F, GDY-OH and GDY-NH2, to gain molecular-level insights into CO2 capture and H2 purification from binary mixtures of CO2/CH4, CO2/CO, CO2/N2, H2/CH4, H2/CO and H2/N2. Gas separation performance is enhanced by the co-effect of size sieving and membrane-gas interactions. Both the hydroxylated GDY-OH and the aminated GDY-NH2 membranes exhibit unprecedented performance for both CO2 and H2 separation. Despite processing a small-sized aperture, the GDY-NH2 achieves the highest performance for CO2 separations with permeance above 8.9 × 104 GPU and selectivities over CH4, CO and N2 up to 13935, 12356 and 809, respectively, which far surpass the 2008 upper bound. Structural and energetic analyses show that the flexible GDY-NH2 tends to open its nanowindows and evoke concerted motions that enhance gas permeation, thereby promoting prompt diffusion. Additionally, the ultra-high H2 separation performance of the functional GDY-NH2 and GDY-OH is also several orders of magnitude higher than state-of-the-art membranes. This computational study reveals two dominant effects that govern the gas permeation process and suggests the great potential of hydroxylated and aminated GDYs for both CO2 capture and H2 purification.

Abstract:Perforated single-layered graphene has demonstrated selectivity and flux that is orders of magnitude greater than state-of-the-art polymer membranes. However, only individual graphene sheets with sizes up to tens of micrometers have been successfully fabricated for pressurized permeation studies. Scaling-up and reinforcement of these atomic membranes with minimum cracks and pinholes remains a major hurdle for practical applications. We develop a large-area in situ, phase-inversion casting technique to create 63 cm high-quality single-layered perforated graphene membranes for ultrafast nanofiltration that can operate at pressures up to 50 bar. This result demonstrates the feasibility of our technique for creating robust large-area, high quality, single-layered graphene and its potential use as a pressurized nanofiltration membrane.

Abstract:Assembling two-dimensional (2D) materials by polyelectrolyte often suffers from inhomogeneous microstructures due to the conventional mixing-and-simultaneous-complexation procedure ("mix-and-complex") in aqueous solution. Herein a "mix-then-on-demand-complex" concept via on-demand in situ cascade anionization and ionic complexation of 2D materials is raised that drastically improves structural order in 2D assemblies, as exemplified by classical graphene oxide (GO)-based ultrathin membranes. Specifically, in dimethyl sulfoxide, the carboxylic acid-functionalized GO sheets (COOH–GOs) were mixed evenly with a cationic poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) and upon filtration formed a well-ordered layered composite membrane with homogeneous distribution of PIL chains in it; next, whenever needed, it was alkali-treated to convert COOH–GO in situ into its anionized state COO––GO that immediately complexed ionically with the surrounding cationic PIL chains. This "mix-then-on-demand-complex" concept separates the ionic complexation of GO and polyelectrolytes from their mixing step. By synergistically combining the PIL-induced hydrophobic confinement effect and supramolecular interactions, the as-fabricated nanofiltration membranes carry interface transport nanochannels between GO and PIL, reaching a high water permeability of 96.38 L m–2 h–1 bar–1 at a maintained excellent dye rejection 99.79% for 150 h, exceeding the state-of-the-art GO-based hybrid membranes. The molecular dynamics simulations support the experimental data, confirming the interface spacing between GO and PIL as the water transport channels.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO), a carbonaceous 2D nanomaterial, has received significant interest as a next-generation membrane building block. To fabricate high-performance membranes, an effective strategy involves stacking GO nanosheets in laminated structures, thereby creating unique nanochannel galleries. One outstanding merit of laminar GO membranes is that their permselectivity is readily tunable by tailoring the size of the nanochannels. Here, a high-performance GO-based nanofiltration membrane was developed by intercalating an aromatic crosslinker, α,α/-dichloro-p-xylene (DCX), between the layers in laminated GO nanosheets. Owing to the formation of strong covalent bonds between the crosslinker and the GO, the resulting GO laminate membrane exhibited outstanding structural stability. Furthermore, due to the precisely controlled and enlarged interlayer spacing distance of the developed DCX-intercalated GO membrane, it achieved an over two-fold enhancement in water permeability (11 ± 2 LMH bar−1) without sacrificing the rejection performance for divalent ions, contrary to the case with a pristine GO membrane.

Abstract:Pristine graphene oxide (GO)-based membranes have proven promising for molecular and ion separation owing to efficient molecular transport nanochannels, but their separation ability in an aqueous environment is limited by the natural swelling tendency of GO. To obtain a novel membrane with anti-swelling behavior and remarkable desalination capability, we used the Al2O3 tubular membrane with an average pore size of 20 nm as the substrate and fabricated several GO nanofiltration ceramic membranes with different interlayer structures and surface charges by fine-tuning the pH of the GO-EDA membrane-forming suspension (pH = 7, 9, 11). The resultant membranes could maintain desalination stability, whether immersed in water for 680 h or operated under a high-pressure environment. When the pH of the membrane-forming suspension was 11, the prepared GE-11 membrane showed a rejection of 91.5% (measured at 5 bar) towards 1 mM Na2SO4 after soaking in water for 680 h. An increase in the transmembrane pressure to 20 bar resulted in an increase in the rejection towards the 1 mM Na2SO4 solution to 96.3%, and an increase in the permeance to 3.7 L·m−2·h−1·bar−1. The proposed strategy in varying charge repulsion is beneficial to the future development of GO-derived nanofiltration ceramic membranes.

Abstract:Nanoporous two-dimensional materials are attractive for ionic and molecular nanofiltration but limited by insufficient mechanical strength over large areas. We report a large-area graphene-nanomesh/single-walled carbon nanotube (GNM/SWNT) hybrid membrane with excellent mechanical strength while fully capturing the merit of atomically thin membranes. The monolayer GNM features high-density, subnanometer pores for efficient transport of water molecules while blocking solute ions or molecules to enable size-selective separation. The SWNT network physically separates the GNM into microsized islands and acts as the microscopic framework to support the GNM, thus ensuring the structural integrity of the atomically thin GNM. The resulting GNM/SWNT membranes show high water permeance and a high rejection ratio for salt ions or organic molecules, and they retain stable separation performance in tubular modules.
A large-area free-standing graphene oxide multilayer membrane with high stability for nanofiltration applications

Abstract:A flexible and free-standing graphene oxide and nylon 6 (GO@nylon 6) multilayer nanofiltration membrane was prepared by a layer-by-layer assembly process. The combination of electrospinning and electrospraying technique was employed, which can facilely prepare large-area membrane with size of 20 × 30 cm. The mechanical stability of multilayer membrane has enhanced significantly due to the tightly locked structure achieved by nylon 6 nanofibers network. The novel GO@nylon 6–13 multilayer nanofiltration membrane demonstrated a pure water flux up to 11.15 L m−2 h−1 bar−1, while keeping high organic dye rejection rate (>95% for methylene blue, and >99% for methyl orange). The rejections rate of the Na2SO4, NaCl, CuSO4, and Pb(NO3)2 were 56.5%, 27.6%, 36.7%, and 18.9%, respectively. Furthermore, GO@nylon 6–13 multilayer nanofiltration membrane also demonstrated a high flux of some common organic solvents (8.4, 5.3, and 0.8 L m−2 h−1 bar−1 for methanol, ethanol, and NMP, respectively), showing excellent chemical stability for separation process in those solvents.

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) membranes hold great promise in molecular separation owing to the ultrathin thickness as well as precisely controllable interlayer distance. However, the tortuous mass transport pathway along stacked nanosheets hinders the availability of high-flux GO membranes. Herein, we design multi-pathway GO membranes to afford fast water transport through in-plane and interlayer pathways. The in-plane pathway is introduced by the porous GO (pGO) nanosheets and the interlayer pathway is enlarged by intercalating hydrophilic halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) into adjacent pGO nanosheets, jointly contributing to the enhanced water permeance. Through manipulating the intercalator amount, the optimized membrane displays ultrahigh water permeance of 206.7 L m−2 h−1 bar−1 and dye rejections over 98.5%. Furthermore, the resultant membranes exhibit resistance against broad-spectrum oil-in-water emulsions. Our study can pave a facile and prospective way to fabricating high-performance two-dimensional laminated membranes.

Enhanced Selective Hydrogen Permeation through Graphdiyne Membrane: A Theoretical Study

Abstract:Graphdiyne (GDY), with uniform pores and atomic thickness, is attracting widespread attention for application in H2 separation in recent years. However, the challenge lies in the rational design of GDYs for fast and selective H2 permeation. By MD and DFT calculations, several flexible GDYs were constructed to investigate the permeation properties of four pure gas (H2, N2, CO2, and CH4) and three equimolar binary mixtures (H2/N2, H2/CO2, and H2/CH4) in this study. When the pore size is smaller than 2.1 Å, the GDYs acted as an exceptional filter for H2 with an approximately infinite H2 selectivity. Beyond the size-sieving effect, in the separation process of binary mixtures, the blocking effect arising from the strong gas–membrane interaction was proven to greatly impede H2 permeation. After understanding the mechanism, the H2 permeance of the mixtures of H2/CO2 was further increased to 2.84 × 105 GPU by reducing the blocking effect with the addition of a tiny amount of surface charges, without sacrificing the selectivity. This theoretical study provides an additional atomic understanding of H2 permeation crossing GDYs, indicating that the GDY membrane could be a potential candidate for H2 purification.

Ultrathin Graphene Nanofiltration Membrane for Water Purification

Abstract:A method of fabricating ultrathin (≈22–53 nm thick) graphene nanofiltration membranes (uGNMs) on microporous substrates is presented for efficient water purification using chemically converted graphene (CCG). The prepared uGNMs show well packed layer structure formed by CCG sheets, as characterized by scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The performance of the uGNMs for water treatment was evaluated on a dead end filtration device and the pure water flux of uGNMs was high (21.8 L m−2 h−1 bar−1). The uGNMs show high retention (>99%) for organic dyes and moderate retention (≈20–60%) for ion salts. The rejection mechanism of this kind of negatively charged membranes is intensively studied, and the results reveal that physical sieving and electrostatic interaction dominate the rejection process. Because of the ultrathin nature of uGNMs, 34 mg of CCG is sufficient for making a square meter of nanofiltration membrane, indicating that this new generation graphene‐based nanofiltration technology would be resource saving and cost‐effective. The integration of high performance, low cost, and simple solution‐based fabrication process promises uGNMs great potential application in practical water purification.
Bio-inspired Fabrication of Anti-fouling and Stability of Nanofiltration Membranes with a Poly(dopamine)/Graphene Oxide Interlayer

Abstract:In this present work, a facile approach of fabricating thin-film composite nanofiltration membranes was proposed by introducing a graphene oxide (GO)@poly(dopamine) (PDA) interlayer, which was conducted by dopamine self-polymerization and amino/acyl chloride interfacial polymerization. It could be found that the presence of a GO@PDA interlayer had a significant influence on the polyamide formation including polyamide topography, thickness, hydrophilicity, and separation performance. Under the optimum conditions, the designed membrane exhibited a pure water flux of 11.4 L.m(-2).h(-l).bar(-1) (0.8 MPa, 25 degrees C) and high salt rejections of different salts with the order Na2SO4 (98.22%) > MgSO4 (97.76%) > MgCl2 (84.05%) > NaCl (66.99%). In addition, the modified membrane displayed excellent anti-fouling property and structural stability. As a summary of the finding in this work, it is expected to contribute a strategy on the fabrication of nanofiltration membrane with good performance, which will exhibit a high potential of industrial application.

Abstract:Membrane desalination is an emerging technology that shows promise for producing freshwater from saline waters. However, most membranes are challenged by low freshwater flux, impacting the water productivity, energy efficiency and membrane usage. Here we present the submicrometre-thick and nanopore-structured graphdiyne membranes on porous Cu hollow fibres. We accomplish nearly perfect NaCl rejections (>99.9%) and ultrahigh water permeabilities reaching ~700 l m −2 h −1 , which are approximately 1–3 orders of magnitude higher than those of commercial polymeric membranes, in vacuum membrane distillation of a 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. Membrane stability is demonstrated by feeding hypersaline waters, real seawater and pollutant-containing waters. The resultant interfacial and microstructural properties of the membranes combine the interfacial ion sieving effect with vapour-transport capability to enable complete salt exclusion and accelerate the water flux. Experimental and theoretical studies have revealed that interfacial transport between graphdiyne interlayers increases the water flux by orders of magnitude relative to transport through intralayer pores.

Abstract:Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes, widely used for their stability, face limitations due to the hardly adjustable pore size in nanoscale and inherent hydrophobicity. To address this, we proposed a co-deposition method incorporating dopamine (DA), polyethyleneimine (PEI), and silicon dioxide (SiO2) nanoparticles with glutaraldehyde cross-linking for precise regulation of pore size and hydrophilicity in PVDF hollow fiber membranes. Notably, the pore diameter reduced from 119.0 ± 3.55 nm to 18.4 ± 0.36 nm, while the contact angle decreased from 107.7° to 40.9°. This simultaneous regulation led to a high-performance PDA/PEI/SiO2-PVDF hydrophilic ultrafiltration membrane with a rejection rate exceeding 99% for 20 nm nanoparticles in a long-term simulated separation experiment while achieving a significant protein permeability of 97% in BSA permeation experiments. Additionally, the membrane demonstrated exceptional long-term stability, offering a novel approach for tuning the performance of ultrafiltration/microfiltration membranes.

Abstract:The development of a highly effective nanofiltration membrane for water purification is crucial for wastewater recovery. The graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) membrane can be an ideal candidate for advanced water treatment due to its intrinsic porous structure and superior physicochemical stability. However, the developments of the g-C3N4 membranes are limited by their traditional preparation methods involving complicated processes, long reaction time and high-temperature conditions. A simple electrochemical-assisted strategy for the rapid preparation of the g-C3N4 nanosheet membranes at room temperature has been developed in this study. The ultra-thin g-C3N4 membrane with a uniform structure can be synthesized within 40 min, which is at least 7 times quicker compared to the traditional methods. The as-prepared g-C3N4 membrane shows a high water flux rate of similar to 90 L m(-2) h(-1) bar(-1). Simultaneously, an excellent rejection rate of 99.1% toward Evans blue is achieved based on the synergistic effect of size sieving and electrostatic repulsion. The breakthrough in the preparation method of g-C3N4 nanosheet membranes in this work is of great significance to the development of g-C3N4 membranes in the field of water purification.
Robust GQDs Modified Thermally Reduced Graphene Oxide Membranes for Ultrafast and Long‐Term Purification of Dye‐Wasted Water

Abstract:Graphene‐related membranes have shown promising potential for water purification. However, both high stability and efficient separation performance of graphene‐related membranes for long‐term operation are urgently requested for their real applications. Here, a robust graphene quantum dots (GQDs) modified thermally reduced graphene oxide (TRG) (GQDs‐TRG) membrane is assembled from GQDs modified TRG aqueous dispersion. The GQDs‐TRG membrane demonstrates an excellent long‐term continuous separation performance in cross‐flow module, with a water permeance of 2000 ± 70 L per hour per square meter per bar (LHM bar−1) and 96 ± 0.2% rejection of Evans Blue (EB). The water permeance is 27 times higher than that of graphene oxide membrane and about two orders of magnitude higher than those of commercial filtration membranes with similar rejection. The gravity‐driven separation experiments on a dead‐end setup and nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulation further confirm the surface cross flow is beneficial to enhancing the durability of GQDs‐TRG membrane on cross‐flow system. On gravity‐driven separation system, under 10 cm liquid column, the GQDs‐TRG membrane (2.34 µm thickness and 12.56 cm2 effective area) exhibits a water permeance of 800 ± 30 LHM bar−1, EB rejection above 95 ± 0.4%, and durability more than 7 month operation. These GQDs‐TRG membranes show the great potential for the long‐term purification of dye‐wasted water with high stability and suitability.
Scalable Graphene Oxide Hollow Fiber Membranes for Dye Desalination Enabled by Multi-Purpose Polyamine Functionalization

Abstract:2D nanosheets such as graphene oxide (GO) can be stacked to construct membranes with fine-tuned nanochannels to achieve molecular sieving ability. These membranes are often thin to achieve high water permeance, but their fabrication with consistent nanostructures on a large scale presents an enormous challenge. Herein, GO-based hollow fiber membranes (HFMs) are developed for dye desalination by synergistically combining chemical etching to form in-plane nanopores (10-30 nm) to increase water permeance and polyamine functionalization to improve underwater stability and enable facile large-scale production using existing membrane manufacturing processes. HFM modules with areas of 88 cm2 and GO layer thicknesses of ≈500 nm are fabricated, and they exhibited a stable dye water permeance of 75 L m-2 h-1 bar-1, rejection of >99.5% for Direct red and Congo red, and Na2SO4/dye separation factor of 300-500, superior to state-of-the-art commercial membranes. The versatility of this approach is also demonstrated using different short polyamines and porous substrates. This study reveals a scalable way of designing 2D materials into high-performance robust membranes for practical applications.

Abstract:Two-dimensional graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanosheets are ideal candidates for membranes because of their intrinsic in-plane nanopores. However, non-selective defects formed by traditional top-down preparation and the unfavorable re-stacking hinder the application of these nanosheets in gas separation. Herein, we report lamellar g-C3N4 nanosheets as gas separation membranes with a disordered layer-stacking structure based on high quality g-C3N4 nanosheets through bottom-up synthesis. Thanks to fast and highly selective transport through the high-density sieving channels and the interlayer paths, the membranes, superior to state-of-the-art ones, exhibit high H-2 permeance of 1.3 x 10(-6) mol m(-2) s(-1) Pa-1 with excellent selectivity for multiple gas mixtures. Notably, these membranes show excellent stability under harsh practice-relevant environments, such as temperature swings, wet atmosphere and long-term operation of more than 200 days. Therefore, such lamellar membranes with high quality g-C3N4 nanosheets hold great promise for gas separation applications.
Efficient separation of (C1–C2) alcohol solutions by graphyne membranes: A molecular simulation study

Abstract:With well-endowed nanopores, graphyne (GY) membranes have attracted considerable interest in alcohol purifications. However, the challenge lies in the rational design of GYs for efficient separation of (C1–C2) alcohol solutions. Herein, GYs are firstly developed for methanol recovery and ethanol dehydration by molecular simulations. Two design strategies including surface charge modification and functional group decoration are proposed in this study. For methanol-water separation, methanol is pre-selected due to the dominated mechanism of preferential adsorption and its flux increases with positive charges within a certain range. An excellent separation performance with 99.1 kg⋅m-2⋅h-1 methanol flux and 15.2 separation factor is achieved by this GY-S membrane with +0.005 e/atom charged surface. This surface charge modification is also effective for methanol-ethanol separation, where the highest performance is harvested by the positively charged GY-M membrane. For water-ethanol separation, water is pre-selected owing to the size sieving effect. To reduce the blocking effect and permeation barrier, the GY-M is functionalized with polar groups so that water flux is promoted regardless of aperture sizes. The hydroxylated GY-M-OH fosters an exceptionally high dehydration performance with 225.8 kg⋅m-2⋅h-1 water flux and 100 wt% water content in permeate. This theoretical study suggests that the GYs membranes might be promising for organic solvent recovery and dehydration.
