Abstract:The herpes simplex virus type 1 ICP4 and ICP0 polypeptides are immediate-early proteins that positively and negatively regulate expression of other viral genes in trans. ICP4 has recently been shown to bind DNA bearing the consensus sequence 5'-ATCGTCNNNN(T/C)CG(A/G)C-3', present upstream of a number of viral genes. To test the hypothesis that this DNA-binding activity is involved in ICP4-mediated gene regulation, site-specific mutagenesis was employed to mutate the version of this sequence in the promoter of the ICP0 gene. The mutation eliminated detectable binding of ICP4 to the promoter as measured in vitro by a gel electrophoresis band shift assay. The ability of the mutated ICP0 promoter to direct synthesis of a reporter gene was also investigated in a transient transfection assay. Whereas ICP4 was found to transactivate the wild-type ICP0 promoter two- to threefold, the mutated promoter was transactivated seven- to ninefold. In assays containing the ICP0 transactivator gene, ICP4 down regulated the wild-type promoter far more efficiently than the mutated promoter. Finally, both the wild-type and mutated ICP0 promoters exhibited a similar response to ICP4 in transfections that included a vector expressing the viral transactivator protein VP16. These experiments suggest that the sequence-specific DNA-binding activity of ICP4 is an essential element of its role as a negative regulator of gene expression.
A Quasi-experimental Study of Chinese University English Learners' Engagement in a Flipped Classroom

Abstract:The demand for improving the quality of undergraduate education in China has prompted the nation-wide implementation of blended teaching approach, including flipped classroom. However, there is a lack of studies examining the effect of flipped language classroom on students' behavioral, emotional, cognitive, and social engagement. To address this issue, this study examined the effect of a flipped English classroom on student engagement by adopting a pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design with mixed methods in a Chinese university. Data from 492 participants were collected and the results of the exploratory factor analysis ( EFA) indicated that the instrument for measuring English learners' engagement was sufficiently reliable. The results of the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) showed that students in the experimental group (n = 268) reported significantly higher behavioral, emotional, cognitive, and social engagement than students in the control group. Students' perceptions of their before-class and in-class learning experiences and their attitudes towards the flipped approach revealed some evidence for how and why flipped classroom could benefit language learners' engagement. The findings shed some light on future course design and the implementation of blended learning approach.
Examining the impact of flipped learning on second language development: A quasi-experiment in higher education

Abstract:This article reports on a study that examined the impact of a flipped English as a Foreign Language (EFL) course on college students' second language (L2) development. Specifically, an 18-week quasi-experiment was administered in a general English course at a Chinese university, with a total of 612 first-year students randomly assigned to the treatment (n = 137) and control (n = 475) groups. Using the propensity score matching and difference-in-differences (PSM-DID) model, we analyzed norm scores on high-stakes assessments administered on the entry and completion of the intervention. The results revealed a causal link between flipped learning (FL) and improved L2 language performance though the impact of FL had substantial heterogeneity as greater gains were found in reading than in writing and listening. Quantile regression analysis suggested the effectiveness of FL varied greatly by proficiency level in that students in the lowest quantiles achieved high improvement in reading and listening but moderate improvement in writing. We discuss the pedagogical implications of these findings to college L2 flipped instruction and recommend that future research be conducted in a more rigorous experimental design to obtain robust and accurate estimates of the effectiveness of FL.
Using the Flipped Classroom to Promote Learner Engagement for the Sustainable Development of Language Skills: A Mixed-Methods Study

Abstract:In second language education, the flipped classroom has been widely researched and increasingly applied as a teaching approach to improve the academic performance and engagement of English as a foreign language learners. However, learner engagement is a multidimensional construct, and not much empirical evidence exists about whether the flipped classroom can lead to a significant improvement in learners' behavioural, emotional, cognitive, and social engagement in the EFL class. To fill this gap, this study adopted a mixed-methods research approach to evaluate the impact of the flipped College English Listening and Speaking class on four-dimension learner engagement in a mainland China context. After an eight-week intervention we compared the experimental group (the flipped class, N = 34) and the control group (the non-flipped class, N = 35). Findings demonstrate that after eight weeks of flipped instruction, students in the flipped class achieved higher mean scores on the post-test engagement questionnaires in behavioural, emotional, cognitive, and social engagement. However, the difference in emotional engagement between the flipped and non-flipped classes was not statistically significant. Semi-structured interviews revealed several factors responsible for learner engagement in the flipped EFL classroom. Positive influencing factors were learning environment, instructor presence, learning content, and learner presence, whereas negative aspects included the excessive workload on learners, lack of learning preparedness, lengthy videos, and technical challenges. Based on the findings, we would argue that the instructor and other educational stakeholders should provide more support to cater to learners' emotional engagement and help learners cope with the challenges encountered throughout the flipped learning process. The study may assist teaching professionals and researchers obtain a clearer understanding of flipped instruction in the EFL context and design and implement the flipped class by considering the positive and negative elements affecting learner engagement.

Abstract:The present study mainly investigated the impact of the flipped classroom approach (FC) on foreign language classroom anxiety (FLCA) among first-year pre-service teachers at a Chinese university. Additionally, it examined whether the effect of (flipped or traditional) teaching approach on the language anxiety differed based on the participants' (urban or rural) educational background. To achieve these objectives, a quasi-experimental design was employed. Two classes, consisting of 60 pre-service teachers (30 from urban and 30 from rural schools) in each class, were randomly assigned to an experimental group exposed to the FC and a control group using the traditional teaching approach (TT). Both approaches were implemented in an English course over a 12-week semester. Data were collected using a Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) and analyzed with two-way ANOVA. The results revealed that the FC had a positive impact on the FLCA among the pre-service teachers. Furthermore, the relation between teaching approach and language anxiety of the pre-service teachers was not significantly influenced by their educational backgrounds. Consequently, the study recommended that the FC be utilized to ameliorate the language anxiety of the first-year Chinese urban and rural pre-service English teachers. Accordingly, the study provided suggestions for teacher educators, pre-service teachers, and educational institutions and authorities for potentially more effective use of the FC in the specific context. Lastly, it discussed research limitations and avenues for future studies.

Abstract:This study investigates the effects of the flipped classroom approach on five aspects of written communicative competence of learners of English as a foreign language (EFL): lexis, syntax, cohesion, pragmatics, and discourse. It experimented on two groups of Chinese undergraduates in a regular college English course, using a flipped learning approach on one group and a traditional lecture approach on the other. The results from a pre-test and post-test revealed that the flipped approach had differential effects on the aforementioned five sub-competencies. More specifically, the flipped group’s overall performance was better than the control group in the post-test, indicating an overall positive role of the flipped approach on EFL learners’ development of communicative competence. However, significant group differences were found only on the learners’ lexical, cohesive, and pragmatic competencies, and not on their syntactical or discourse competencies. These findings thus provide further insights on how the flipped method might be strategically used to facilitate the learners’ language development.

Changes in and Effects of Anxiety on English Test Performance in Chinese Postgraduate EFL Classrooms

Abstract:As an important affective factor in language learning, foreign language anxiety (FLA) has been extensively researched. Nevertheless, not many studies have targeted postgraduate students or been longitudinal to reveal the dynamic nature of FLA. Hence, the present quantitative study examined changes in and effects of FLA on postgraduate students’ performance over a 10-week period. A total of 324 postgraduate students from a prestigious university took a pretest and posttest, answered a set of questionnaires before (phase 1) and after (phase 2) the 10-week period, respectively. Analyses of the data revealed three major findings: (1) Toward the end of the period, the respondents became significantly less apprehensive of speech communication in English and less worried about the English class, English classroom performance, and other students’ performance. Their overall English language classroom anxiety was significantly lower as well, though they became significantly more worried about tests. (2) In both phases, anxiety was largely highly related to students’ performance in English speaking, listening, reading, and writing tests as well as the overall test performance, especially speaking test performance. Nevertheless, this correlation became weaker in phase 2. (3) In both phases, foreign language classroom anxiety and achievement anxiety powerfully predicted students’ English test performance, especially speaking test performance. These results show that FLA is an important issue even for postgraduate students, affecting their test performance to varying degrees over time. Based on these findings, implications and suggestions are discussed.

Abstract:Abstract This study aimed at exploring the effect of implementing writing metacognitive strategies via flipped classrooms on the Iranian EFL learners' achievement, anxiety, and self-efficacy in writing. The study involved 45 intermediate learners of both genders, selected using a random convenience sampling method. The participants' English proficiency was measured by the Preliminary English Test, and they were placed in two groups: experimental group (23 learners) and control group (22 learners). In the former group, the students were exposed to 5 distinct types of metacognitive strategies over the course of 10 flipped classroom sessions, while the latter group received writing metacognitive strategy-based instruction in a traditional classroom setting. The data collection process involved administering the Second Language Writing Self-Efficacy Scale, two intermediate writing tasks, and the Second Language Writing Anxiety Scale. The collected data were analyzed using a one-way ANCOVA. The findings evidenced considerable enhancement in the writing performance of the students who underwent instruction through flipped classrooms in comparison to those in the traditional classroom refsetting. Furthermore, the results demonstrated that the utilization of writing metacognitive strategies in flipped classrooms resulted in a substantial rise in students' writing self-efficacy, while simultaneously leading to a decrease in their writing anxiety.

Abstract:The effects of teaching speaking skills through the Flipped Classroom Model on English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students' autonomy, willingness to communicate, and anxiety while speaking English are examined in this study. With a quasi-experimental design, one control group (n = 27) and one experimental group (n = 28) were created for the quantitative phase of the study. The participants were pre-tested at the beginning of the term with three scales, including learner autonomy, willingness to communicate, and L2 speaking anxiety. After ten weeks of treatment in the experimental group, both groups were post-tested at the end of the term. In the qualitative phase, the students' ideas about their experience with flipped learning were gathered with four open-ended interview questions at the end of the intervention. Quantitative data were analyzed with SPSS 21.00. Paired sample t-tests and independent sample t-tests were run to test the effectiveness of the intervention. Qualitative data were analyzed manually through thematic analysis. The results of this study indicated that if implemented well in L2 speaking classes, the Flipped Classroom Model could significantly increase EFL students' autonomous learning and willingness to communicate. Moreover, it could considerably lower EFL students' speaking anxiety. Compared to the traditional classroom model, flipped learning provides various advantages to English language learners, especially those who aim to develop their speaking skills. Therefore, this model could be implemented in EFL-speaking classes to increase students' exposure to English both in and out of the classroom.
The Effect of Blended Learning Environment-based, Flipped Classroom Practice on College Students' Learning Performance

Abstract:Improving students' learning performance is one of the fundamental roles of universities, and innovative teaching strategies are considered an effective way to achieve this goal. In this study, a quasi-experimental design was utilized to determine any differences in college students' learning performance that might be associated with the flipped classroom practice in a blended learning environment. 40 students in the experimental group experienced the flipped classroom practice, and 59 were taught in a traditional way (control group). Data were drawn from a questionnaire and semi-structured interview. The quantitative data from the questionnaire indicated diverse results. Although there was no significant difference in students' learning performance between the experimental and control group, a significant promotion of the experimental group students' learning performance was observed in the study. Although results of the semi-structured interview found that there was still some room for improvement, students valued the flipped instructional approach, which emphasized providing guidance for improving learning performance through materials processing, group sharing, and rhetorical argumentation organizing.

Abstract:<span>The present study explored the impact of flipped classroom on English as a foreign language (EFL) students' global writing performance and writing complexity, accuracy, and fluency (CAF) through a quasi-experimental research design. In so doing, two intact classes were selected from an Iranian university as the participants of the study and they were randomly assigned as the control and experimental groups with 24 and 27 EFL students respectively. Over a period of one semester, the control group (the non-flipped classroom) was taught using traditional writing instruction whereas the experimental group (the flipped classroom) was taught in a flipped learning mode. The students' performance on two timed writing tasks was examined in terms of global writing performance and writing CAF. Paired samples t-tests, one-way ANCOVA, Mann Whitney U, and Wilcoxon Signed Rank tests were used to analyse the data. The results demonstrated that the flipped classroom significantly developed and outperformed the non-flipped classroom on EFL students' global writing performance and writing fluency; however, its effect on the students' writing complexity and accuracy fell short of significance. Based on the findings, implications are provided for EFL writing instruction.</span>

Abstract:In this study, we evaluated the effect of online flipped teaching on learner engagement in an English for specific purposes (ESP) listening and speaking course at a Chinese university. We also aimed to understand the factors influencing learner engagement in an online environment. For this study, an e-learning platform called Yunbanke was used for asynchronous teaching in a flipped class, and Tencent Meeting was employed for synchronous teaching in the non-flipped and flipped class, respectively. We used a mixed-methods approach. First, we conducted a quasi-experiment to compare engagement levels between the experimental group (flipped class, n = 34) and control group (non-flipped class, n = 35) before and after 16 weeks of online instruction. Then, we used lesson logs and conducted interviews with the students and the instructor. The results showed that online flipped teaching could significantly improve the learners' behavioural and cognitive engagement compared to the non-flipped class. However, no significant difference was found in emotional engagement between the two classes. Qualitative data supported our quantitative findings, and five key factors leading to different dimensions of learner engagement were identified: learners' prior English attainment, learners' perceived affordance of online learning and teaching, interpersonal factors, instructor presence and learning tasks. Our findings can shed light on online ESP learners' engagement and improve online ESP teaching practices.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the flipped classroom(FL) on reflective thinking(RT), academic self-efficacy(ASE), and achievement motivation (AM)in language learners at the intermediate level. So far, however, there has been little discussion about this subject. To this end, 429 participants were selected through multiple-stage cluster sampling. First, five institutes were chosen randomly. Then all the learners at the intermediate level, 429 EFL learners, were designated using census technique sampling. Finally, 374 correctly filled questionnaires were collected. Also, it should be mentioned that the learners' language level was assessed through the Quick Placement Test (OQPT) to ensure the homogeneity of the participants. In the next stage, participants were randomly divided into a control group (187 learners) and an experimental group (187 learners). Three questionnaires were used to collect data. Questionnaires were the Reflective Thinking Scale, the Foreign Language self-efficacy scale, and the Hermans (1970) Achievement Motivation Scale. Data analyzed by SPSS 23. Descriptive and inferential statistics showed that FC significantly impacts EFL learners' RT( Sig = 0.00, F = 572.51 ); ASE ( Sig = 0.00, F = 55.30 ), and AM ( Sig = 0.00, F = 147.56 ). The implication could be beneficial for teachers, instructors, and language schools to rethink their teaching mediums to keep up with new developments and direct learners toward a better understanding.

Abstract:Introduction: In recent years, China has made strides in adopting student-oriented teaching approaches, particularly in tertiary English education, through the integration of enhanced technology. This study aimed to investigate the impact of flipped classroom on the English proficiency of first-year pre-service teachers at a Chinese normal university. It also sought to determine whether educational background (urban or rural) interacted with the teaching approach (flipped or traditional) in affecting the language proficiency of the learners. Methods: A quasi-experimental design was utilized with two treatments: a flipped classroom approach and a traditional teacher-centered teaching approach. Both approaches were implemented in the Integrated English Course over a 12-week semester. Two randomly selected classes, consisting of 60 pre-service teachers in each class, were assigned to either the experimental or control group. Data were collected from pretest and post-test assessments and analyzed using two-way ANOVA. Results: The results revealed a positive impact of the flipped classroom and a significant interaction between educational background and teaching approach on English proficiency. Specifically, urban pre-service teachers achieved higher English proficiency than their rural peers when taught in the flipped classroom, but not in the traditional classroom. Furthermore, urban pre-service teachers in the flipped classroom outperformed their urban peers in the traditional classroom, while rural pre-service teachers did not show any significant difference in their performance between the two classes. Discussion: The findings suggested that the flipped classroom approach was more effective than the traditional approach for Chinese pre-service teachers, particularly those with an urban educational background. However, it is important to ensure that rural learners receive sufficient support to benefit equally from this innovative teaching approach. Accordingly, implications and recommendations for future research are discussed.

Abstract:This study inspected the effect of Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) and flipped instruction on EFL learners’ foreign language speaking anxiety, foreign language learning motivation, and attitude toward English learning. To fulfill this objective, the Oxford Quick Placement Test was given to 160 Iranian EFL learners, of whom 120 upper-intermediate participants were chosen and divided into two experimental groups—MOOC ( n = 40) and flipped ( n = 40)—and one control group ( n = 40). After that, all selected participants were administered a speaking anxiety questionnaire and a motivation questionnaire as the pre-test of the research. Then, one of the experimental groups received an online-based instruction via Skype: one conversation was instructed to this group online every session. The other experimental group received the treatment via flipped-based instruction. The audio files and the texts of the conversations were sent to this group via the WhatsApp application because they all had easy access to it. On the other hand, the control group did not receive any Internet-delivered treatment yet was trained through a face-to-face method. This process continued until the last session, and after the treatment period, the post-tests of speaking anxiety and motivation were given to all three groups to determine the effectiveness of the treatment. Moreover, two attitude questionnaires were administered to the experimental groups to examine their attitudes toward the MOOC and the flipped models of instructions. The findings of the One-way ANOVA test, Post-hoc Scheffe test, and paired samples t-test showed that there were significant differences between the post-test of the experimental groups and the control group. The results indicated that the experimental groups significantly outflanked the control group after the treatment. Lastly, the outcomes showed that participants in both experimental groups had positive attitudes toward technological-based instructional environments.

Comparing online and offline Chinese EFL learners' anxiety and emotional engagement

Abstract:Learners' anxiety and emotional engagement have attracted a surge of scholarly interest due to their considerable relevance to students' academic performance and psychological well-being. However, the two variables await more exploration in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context. To fill this gap, we aimed to investigate these two variables in online and offline English-speaking classes, respectively, at a university in China. We adopted a sequential mixed-methods research approach. First, we used questionnaires to measure and compare the level of anxiety and emotional engagement in the two classes. Then, we conducted semi-structured interviews to gain a deeper understanding of the factors affecting learners' online and offline learning experiences. Quantitative results showed that students had higher levels of anxiety and lower levels of emotional engagement in the online environment than in the offline context. The subsequent qualitative findings revealed a complexity of positive and negative factors affecting anxiety and emotional engagement in the two instructional contexts. Our findings can shed light on research and practices concerning learner emotions in online and offline EFL instruction. Strategies were also provided to help teachers mitigate learners' anxiety and enhance their emotional engagement, which includes formulating a learning community, providing emotional support, alleviating students' technical stress and distraction, and incorporating group-based interactive activities into the course.

Abstract:Promoting English as a Foreign Language (EEL) learners' willingness to communicate and self-efficacy in different contexts has drawn the attention of many investigators. This review explored the effect of digital-based flipped learning classrooms on enhancing learners' willingness to communicate and self-efficacy. The related literature indicated that learners' intention to communicate is affected by social media and digitalized materials used in flipped classrooms. Compared to the traditional educational contexts, this review showed higher levels of self-efficacy in flipped classrooms among EFL learners. Furthermore, the review expounded on the implications and future directions for EFL teachers, teacher educators, educational policy-makers, and advisors. The ideas can improve their awareness of learner self-efficacy, willingness to communicate, and the use of flipped learning approach in educational contexts.

Abstract:While social networking sites (SNSs) have attracted growing scholarly interest in uncovering L2 learners' participation within these sites, the impact of writing on SNSs upon students' writing performance and learner autonomy remains underexplored. This study reported on a college EFL writing course participated by two groups of Chinese first-year English majors at a university in Southeast China. The students were arranged randomly into an experimental group enrolled in a writing on WeChat Moments program (n = 25) and a control group in a traditional English writing class (n = 25). Both groups took part in the pre- and post- writing tests and completed questionnaires. The results revealed that the participants in the experimental group achieved better writing performance, with higher levels of learner autonomy than those in the control group. The findings call for attention to the significance of WeChat as one SNS in rendering richer exposure to the target language resources and constructing an interactive environment of learning and social communication for L2 writers.

Abstract:Flipped instruction has become a hot issue in foreign language teaching technology. In this study, we tracked learners in a beginner-level Chinese Foreign Language classroom to see if flipped teaching based on a MOOC made a difference to their oral proficiency development and rate of progresscompared to a baseline group. Language developmentwas assessed by standard complexity, accuracy and fluency measures, alongside subjective ratings. Learners’ investment of time and perceptions of the new method were also investigated. Results showed that learners exposed to flipped instruction significantly (p < .01) outperformed the baseline group in oral proficiency in many measures, especially in speech fluency, though their advantage in complexity and accuracy was less evident. Rate of progress through the syllabus for the flipped group was also faster, requiring 25% less face-to-face time. Learners in the flipped group also demonstrated more (out of class) time investment in their learning and more positive attitudes toward the course, though these two factors did not significantly associate with the proficiency measures. These results support the implementation of flipped instruction in foreign language classrooms for both better and faster learner improvement; we explore how far psycho-social models of active learning might explain its methodological advantages.

The Impact of the Flipped Classroom Teaching Model on EFL Learners’ Language Learning: Positive Changes in Learning Attitudes, Perceptions and Performance

Abstract:Instruction in English as a foreign language (EFL) learning is a priority around the globe, but instructional methodologies have not always kept pace with the changing needs of learners. The traditional teacher-centered EFL classroom teaching model can no longer meet the needs of college EFL learners to strengthen and improve their language ability. For years, the flipped classroom teaching model has been widely recognized as an innovative and effective instructional method by language educators. Based upon the analysis of the current EFL teaching and learning situation and the flipped classroom teaching model, the author took two Artificial Intelligent classes from a Chinese public college as the participants in the experiment to explore the impact of the flipped classroom teaching model on their language learning. One Artificial Intelligent class, the Experimental Group (EG), adopted the flipped classroom teaching model in EFL class, and the other Artificial Intelligent class, the Control Group (CG), adopted the traditional teacher-centered method in EFL class. After the survey, implementation of different teaching models, pre-test and post-test comparison, learning time changing curve analysis, and analysis of learners’ acceptance of the new model, the study aims to find out the impact of the flipped classroom teaching model on college EFL learners’ language learning attitudes, perceptions and performance, providing some references for college EFL educators on their EFL teaching to a certain extent.
