Abstract:Drawing upon the transaction cost economics and organizational learning theory, this study examines how international diversification affects firm's innovation performance. With a longitudinal data set obtained from a sample of 73 Chinese firms in information communication equipment manufacturing industry, home appliances manufacturing industry, and low voltage apparatus and cable manufacturing industry, we find a curvilinear inverted S-shaped relationship between international diversification and innovation performance. It implies that emerging enterprises might gain increase at the expansion stage, experience a hard time at the conflict stage, and then reap again at the convergence phase.

Abstract:The rapid development of technology is viewed as a key determinant of success in a firm. Technology innovation is regarded as a tool for strengthening the competitiveness of a firm or an industry. This paper develops a model of technology innovation. We hypothesize that technological innovation capabilities are a function of a firm's technology competence, top management support, information source and strategic alliances. These relationships are empirically tested using the date of 160 Chinese firms acquired by interviews and surveys. The results indicate some important implications for the managers. First, the technology competence is positively associated with the level of innovation. In addition, managers need to pay attention to the information source, which influence the speed of technology innovation. Secondly, the prior technology and management experience of CEO and the attitude to innovation will influence the development the technology of a firm. Lastly, from the results we find the number of strategic alliances has no significant relationship with technology innovation. It is to say, managers need to consider the best number of technological copartner. Furthermore, we conclude the implications of this research and discuss the limitations of the study and future research.

Abstract:This article examines the effect of international diversification on innovation performance. The empirical studies up to now have not found consistent support for the innovation performance from international diversification. We propose there is an inverted S-shaped relationship between international diversification and innovation performance. Innovation performance gets small increase as the firm go abroad to a few similar countries, decreases as the firm entering into some differentiated countries, and finally increase as firms going further into more countries. Data on 73 firms between 2002 and 2012 is collected to do empirical study. The findings of the research provide evidence of the prediction.

Abstract:Technological diversification is a critical strategy for enterprises to gain competitive advantage. But the pursuit of unrelated technological diversification faces a greater knowledge distance, posing difficulty for enterprise technology management. Emerging AI offer new opportunities for such explorations. In this study, we construct a multi-period DID model using the panel data from China's listed manufacturing enterprises from 2013 to 2022. Our empirical analysis reveals that AI significantly promotes technological diversification, particularly in unrelated technological diversification. Furthermore, we find that core technology competence positively moderates the relationship between AI and unrelated technological diversification, while knowledge stocks exert a negative moderating effect. Notably, the influence of AI on technological diversification is more pronounced among small-scale enterprises and those situated in new-generation AI pilot areas.

Abstract:The extant literature has revealed mixed findings of the relationship between technological diversification and technological innovation performance (TIP). Using the panel data of 417 high-tech listed companies from 2010 to 2018 in Growth Enterprise Market and SME Boards in China, this paper analyses the effect of related technological diversification (RTD) and unrelated technological diversification (UTD) on TIP through negative binomial fixed effects regression method and examines the contingency of internal resources and environmental dynamism. Results show that RTD can help enterprises strengthen the R&D capabilities in relevant technical fields and improve TIP. An inverted U-type relationship is also evident between UTD and TIP. That is, the increase in the degree of UTD gradually increases TIP at first, but the latter declines when the degree of UTD reaches beyond a certain extent. In addition, the technical, marketing, and capital resources within an enterprise play a positive moderating role, which helps enterprises to carry out R&D that is related to RTD and UTD. External environment dynamism exhibits a negative moderating effect. Increasing uncertainty of the technical environment and the changing of the customer's demands weaken the effect of RTD and UTD on innovation performance. The study conclusions provide theoretical guidance for companies to formulate strategies for technological diversification, comprehensively utilize internal resources, and strengthen external environmental scanning to improve technological innovation performance.

Abstract:This study analyses technological expansion by examining the interaction between firms' diversification strategy and internal capabilities. We argue that when new technologies emerge, firms that were actively pursuing diversification do not have equal intention to adopt the technologies. For firms that possess internal capabilities similar or relevant to the new technologies, their diversification strategy facilitates technological expansion, otherwise diversification strategy negatively affects technological adoption. This study improves our understanding on technological expansion. Existing studies try to identify organizational characteristics that facilitate or impede firm entry into new technological fields. This research reveals that the same organizational characteristic (e.g. diversification strategy) can exhibit different effects on technological adoption. It facilitates technological expansion if firms' existing capabilities can be applied to new technologies, otherwise it impedes new technological adoption.

Abstract:As an important type of technological innovation strategy,corporate technological diversification strategy has been focused in recent years.This paper studies the main factors which promoting corporate technological diversification strategy from the viewpoint of organizational learning,innovation culture,internal and external technical resource configuration etc.And it gives the empirical study on the theory hypotheses through combining with the structural equation modeling method.The results show that organizational learning has a positive impact on corporate technological diversification strategy,and the same as innovation culture,internal resource,and external technological linkage,which means that firms should follow the idea of open innovation and enhance organizational learning to carry out technological diversification strategy.However,the empirical study result also shows that the degree of influence of external technology linkages on corporate technological diversification strategy is relatively weak.Finally,it suggests that China's firms should take more importance on external professional technology linkage including universities and research institutions.
The external knowledge sources for firms' technology capabilities accumulation

Abstract:This paper handles two questions: Do external technology sources have determined technology capability accumulation in Chinese firms? If so, which sources are more important, foreign technologies or Chinese institutions and customers? To deal with these questions, according to our research on some Chinese firms, we select some types of technological change and the stage of firms' technology capabilities evolution as explanatory variables of external knowledge sources. Basing on the survey data administered to six manufacturing firms of four industries in China, we have found that they all view external knowledge sources as important forces to accumulate technology capabilities. Furthermore, through data analysis, we discover that the six firms can be divided into two types: one type consists of five firms, their primary external sources are foreign firms. The second type consists of two firms, their primary external knowledge sources are Chinese universities and the institutes of scientific research and customers. This result is consistent with our theory analysis. © 2006 IEEE.

Abstract:Knowledge and innovation have become the main two themes for firms' development. However, the inherent mech-anism of knowledge accumulation promoting a firm's innovation and development is still obscure, which may lead a firm to be puzzled by how to gain competitive advantage via knowledge accumulation. Taking a firm's innovation capabilities as me-diator, the present paper explores the mechanism mentioned above from the perspective of different knowledge accumulation ways. Using data collecting from 419 enterprises, this study examines the relationship between knowledge accumulation and firms' growth empirically. Results got: (1) Knowledge accumulation does not necessarily lead to competitive advantage unless it takes innovation capabilities as the mediator, or it even has negative effect on a firm's growth. (2) Endogenous knowl-edge accumulation tends to construct some kind of deep-seated competence, namely potential innovation capability, which pro-vides the base and source of realized innovation capability, then promote a firm to gain high level performance. And knowledge acquisition can leverage higher level performance only via realized innovation capabilities. (3) Endogenous knowledge accu-mulation contributes more than exogenous knowledge accumulation to a firm's growth. Finally, the present paper discusses managerial implication and future research.

Abstract:Technological diversification can overcome the limitations imposed by an enterprise's single technological capability and enables enterprises to recombine resources, thereby enhancing their competitive advantage. In-house inventor cooperation can improve the efficiency of the production factor combination and expand the scope of the enterprise's technology base. This study empirically explores the effect of in-house inventor cooperation network on technology diversification. In addition, this study further investigates the moderating effect of intellectual property protection on the inventor cooperation network and on corporate technology diversification. An enterprise inventor cooperation network is embodied by its network location characteristics. Empirical results show that the difference in the location of the inventor cooperative network exhibits different effects on the diversification of enterprise technology. Moreover, intellectual property protection significantly weakens the incentive effect of the intermediary location of inventor cooperative network on corporate technology diversification.

Managing External Knowledge Search: the Multiple and Contingent Roles of Absorptive Capacity.

Abstract:Nowadays, it is widely accepted that the search for external knowledge is critical to firm innovation performance. However, a framework to systematically demonstrate what factors interactively influence a firm's openness in innovation search is still in lack. In this study, taking a perspective of absorptive capacity for innovation search, we develop an integrative framework with three-way interaction to explore how absorptive capacity, financial slack, and industrial competition shape a firm's external knowledge search behaviour. GLS regression is adopted to examine the model with a balanced 10-year panel dataset of 298 manufacturing firms who publicly traded in the USA. The results reveal that both direct and indirect effects of absorptive capacity on external knowledge search are contingent upon the degree of industrial competition, and will be diminished for firms embedded in highly competitive industries. Directions for future research and managerial implications are further discussed.

Abstract:Anecdotal evidence suggests that manufacturing firms are able to engage in product diversification through external technology acquisitions, such as technology licensing. However, there is little empirical evidence regarding this proposition to link inward technology licensing and firms' product diversification or to suggest when and under what conditions the effect of diversification through this channel may be mitigated or augmented. The current study aims to address this research gap through an empirical investigation of a sample of 141 Chinese manufacturing licensee firms. The results indicate that inward technology licensing is positively related to a firm's diversification and that this relationship is further moderated by a licensee firm's R&D expenditure and technological distance relative to the licensor firm. Boundary Spanning Knowledge Search Synergy Strategy and Types of Indigenous Innovation Capability：An Empirical Study

Abstract:The reconfiguration of indigenous innovation capability is an emergency issue for emerging economy. However, the 'complementary or substitution' argument about the relationship among search strategies existed in re-cent studies, which hinders the reconfiguration of indigenous innovation capability. Thus, based on data from 376 high-tech enterprises, this paper employed cluster analysis and multi-logistic regression method to study the rela-tionship between boundary spanning knowledge search synergy and types of indigenous innovation capability du-ring its reconfiguration process. There are several important results. Firstly, there are three dominant types of tech-nological innovation capability during each stage of capability reconfiguration: a) knowledge assimilation capability dominant type; b) knowledge assimilation and integration capability lead type; c)knowledge assimilation, integration capability and creation capabilities at a high level under balanced development type. Secondly, there are different boundary spanning knowledge search synergy strategies facilitate each type of indigenous innovation capability du-ring its reconfiguration. This paper not only extends the application of synergy theory, landscape theory in the field of indigenous innovation, but also has managerial implications for enterprise indigenous innovation capability reconfiguration under emerging economy.

Abstract:Enterprises often acquire technologies from external sources which are geographically dispersed. Although previous literatures have discussed the role of external technology acquisition (ETA) in enterprises' innovation performance, how innovation is affected by the breadth and depth of ETA is less investigated, and little is known about how geographical distance (GD) is involved. Therefore, this paper first analyses the relationship between the breadth, depth of ETA and enterprises' innovation performance with patent transaction data of listed manufacturing enterprises in China. Then we further investigate how GD moderates the relationship. Results show that both the breadth and depth of ETA positively affect enterprises' innovation performance. GD has no moderating effect on the relationship between the breadth of ETA and enterprises' innovation performance, but negatively moderates the relationship between the depth of ETA and enterprises' innovation performance. Our results have implications for enterprises' ETA strategy.

Untangling the Duality of Emerging Market Firms' Response to Outward Foreign Direct Investment Policies on Their Innovation Performance: A Resource Dependence Perspective

Abstract:Firms' international expansion, affected by outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) policies of home countries, can greatly shape their innovation performance. Yet, existing literature lacks sufficient investigation toward the nexus between corporate response to policies in OFDI activities and subsequent innovation performance. Thus, this article examines how a firm's response to OFDI policies affects its innovation performance. Drawing on the resource dependence theory, the authors theorize corporate response to OFDI policies as firm dependence on home governments. They argue that such dependence differentially affects firm innovation through support and control mechanisms, and elucidate an inverted U-shaped relationship between corporate response to OFDI policies (measured by the percentage of a firm's OFDI projects in policy-favored markets) and innovation performance (measured as patent counts). Furthermore, this curvilinear relationship, they posit, is moderated and strengthened by home-government subsidies the firm receives (calculated as the ratio of annual subsidies received to yearly sales). The authors use archival data of 2,050 Chinese listed manufacturing firms responding to specific OFDI policies from 2013 to 2021 to corroborate their predictions. Overall, by illuminating the innovation implications of OFDI as a corporate response to policies, this study contributes to the international marketing literature in the context of emerging markets.

Abstract:Many domestic enterprises in emerging economies are concerned with the question of how to better utilize the portfolio of technology sourcing channels to achieve rapid economic growth by technological innovation. This paper looks at this issue by exploring the impacts of knowledge acquisition diversity (KAD) on innovation performance of domestic enterprises in China and the technological contexts (in terms of technology gap and technology development speed) under which KAD is most likely to contribute. Using panel data of the manufacturing industry in China over the 2001–2009 period, the results show that KAD has an inverse U-shaped relationship with innovation performance in terms of both product-related innovation performance (NPS) and knowledge-related innovation performance (PAT). Specifically, it reveals that the capability to generate technological innovation over time is dependent on how domestic enterprises manage their portfolio of knowledge sourcing channels to learn from foreign enterprises. Moreover, it is shown that the technology gap significantly moderates the inverted U-shaped relationship between KAD and both NPS and PAT. Technology development speed has a moderating effect on the inverted U-shaped relationship between KAD and innovation only in terms of NPS. The results of this study can help us to understand the relationships among technological contexts, KAD and innovation performance of domestic enterprises in emerging countries.

Abstract:An increasing number of studies in technology/innovation management contribute to the understanding of the relationship between external technology acquisition and product innovation performance. On the other hand, the meta-analytic reviews of new product development literature indicate a positive impact of product innovativeness on product innovation performance. However, existing research has not examined the link between external technology acquisition and product innovativeness. This study, therefore, aims to fill this gap of knowledge by investigating the external technology acquisition—product innovativeness relationship and examining the moderating roles of R&D investment and configurational context on this link. Based on a panel sample of 105 high-technology firms over a six-year period, a least squared dummy variable s model reveals interesting results. First, external technology acquisition has a positive impact on product innovativeness. Second, R&D investment increases the effect of external technology acquisition on product innovativeness. Lastly, firm size exhibits a negative effect on the contribution of external technology acquisition to product innovativeness. However, firm age positively impacts the relationship between external technology acquisition and product innovativeness. In addition, this study reveals a positive effect of product innovativeness on firm growth.

Abstract:This paper examines the pattern of innovation and learning among state-owned enterprises in Chinese high-tech sectors and empirically estimates the impact of three types of investment for acquiring technological knowledge—in-house R&D, importing foreign technology, and purchasing domestic technology—on the innovation capabilities of firms. Based on a panel dataset consisting of 21 high-tech sectors during the period 1995–2004, an augmented knowledge production function is estimated. The results show that importing foreign technology alone does not facilitate innovation in Chinese state-owned high-tech enterprises, unless in-house R&D is also conducted. Domestic technology purchases, however, are found to have a favorable direct impact on innovation, suggesting that firms have less difficulty in absorbing domestic technological knowledge than utilizing foreign technology and that absorptive capacity is contingent upon the source or nature of the external knowledge.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The conflict between “faster, better and cheaper” and high environment uncertainty forces firms to choose between different product innovation strategies. This study shows that firms can develop strategic ambidexterity in product innovation (SAPI) through diverse product innovation strategies, by effectively exploiting internal and external resources as well as their combination. The work explores the relationship between the interplay of external knowledge sources and internal information sharing for SAPI in 600 small- and medium-sized Chinese manufacturing enterprises. The results show knowledge breadth and depth and information sharing are positively related to SAPI, which tends to increase when knowledge depth is associated with information sharing. The study contributes to new product development (NPD) literature by introducing the concept of strategic ambidexterity in product innovation, and exploring the roles of external knowledge sources and internal information sharing, and their complementarity, on the ability to develop firm-level SAPI. It further provides implications for open innovation studies.

Abstract:With the continuous changes in the environment and the gradual enhancement of market competitiveness, knowledge and information have become an important foundation for enterprise development, and knowledge elements have become important factors affecting enterprise innovation. The trend of knowledge networking is becoming increasingly evident. The knowledge network formed from this can break the traditional pattern of internal circular innovation, provide enterprises with many heterogeneous resources, and improve innovation performance. The cross integration of different technologies makes the knowledge network denser and more complex. How to continuously acquire and develop heterogeneous resources through knowledge networks? How to promote innovation performance of enterprises through rational allocation and utilization of technological diversification? The in-depth study of this series of issues has important theoretical and practical significance. This study will conduct a series of theoretical and empirical studies on the impact of knowledge network structure embedding on enterprise innovation performance. It will provide ideas and references for promoting sustainable innovation in enterprises.
