Abstract:Thanks to the flexible deployment, mobility and low cost, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) will be widely used in civil and military scenarios. In this paper, a flying network in the sky is considered, where multiple aerial source nodes are equipped with sensing devices to explore the environment and transmit the collected information to the ground station for data fusion and processing. However, there exists distance restriction due to the signal attenuation. Therefore, a UAV is deployed as a flying relay to provide wireless connection. Firstly, we design a time-division multiple access scheme to satisfy the rate requirements. Secondly, to maximize the system throughput under the no-fly zones, flying speed and available energy constraints, we optimize the time, power and flying trajectory. Then we decompose it into three subproblems. To reduce computational complexity, we optimize the power allocation and flying trajectory by applying the Lagrange dual decomposition and the alternating direction method of multipliers, respectively. In conclusion, an overall algorithm is proposed to iteratively optimize these three variables. In the end, we obtain the solution and the simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:In this paper, we study an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-enabled multiuser wireless power transfer (WPT) network, where a UAV is responsible for providing wireless energy for a set of ground devices (GDs) deployed in an area. We focus on the design of UAV trajectory subject to the maximum flight speed limit, in order to maximize the minimum harvested energy among GDs over a particular charging duration. Different from prior works that considered simplified linear energy harvesting models, this paper for the first time takes into account the realistic nonlinear energy harvesting model for the UAV trajectory design. However, the formulated trajectory design problem is highly non-convex and has infinite number of variables, thus making it be challenging to be solved optimally. To tackle this difficulty, we adopt the following three-step approach to obtain an efficient solution. First, we rigorously characterize that the optimal trajectory follows a new successive-hover-and-fly (SHF) structure, where the UAV hovers at a certain set of points for efficiently transferring energy, and flies among these hovering points with the maximum speed following certain arcs (not necessarily straight lines). Next, based on this SHF structure, we transform the original problem to a new one for finding a set of turning point variables during the maximum-speed flight, at which the UAV changes the flight direction without hovering. Finally, we use the techniques of convex approximation to solve the transformed problem. According to the convexity of the nonlinear energy harvesting model, we iteratively solve a series of convex optimization problems to update the UAV trajectory towards a high-quality solution. Numerical results show the convergence of the proposed approach, and validate its performance gain over conventional designs.

Abstract:As an important part of the fifth generation (5G) mobile networks, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been applied in various communication scenarios due to their high operability and low cost. In this paper, we investigate a multi-UAV communication system with moving users and consider the co-channel interference caused by the transmissions of all other UAVs. To ensure the fairness, we maximize the minimum average user rate during the observed time by jointly optimizing UAVs' trajectories, transmission power, and user association. Considering that UAVs can cover a large area for communications, UAVs do not need to move as soon as the users move. Therefore, a two-timescale structure is proposed for the considered scenario, where the UAVs' trajectories are optimized based on the channel state information (CSI) in a long timescale, while the transmission power and the user association are optimized based on the instantaneous CSI in a short timescale. To effectively tackle this challenging non-convex problem with both discrete and continuous variables, we propose a joint neural network (NN) design, where a deep reinforcement learning based Pointer Network named advantage pointer-critic (APC) is applied to optimize discrete variables and a deep-unfolding NN is used to optimize the continuous variables. Specifically, we first formulate a Markov decision process to model the user association, and then employ the APC network trained by the advantage actor-critic algorithm to address it. The APC network consists of a Pointer Network and a Multilayer Perceptron. As for the deep-unfolding NN, we first develop a block coordinate descent based algorithm to optimize the UAVs' trajectories and transmission power, and then unfold the algorithm into a layer-wise NN with introduced trainable parameters. These two networks are jointly trained in an unsupervised fashion. Simulation results validate that the proposed joint NN significantly outperforms the optimization algorithm with much lower complexity, and achieves good performances on scalability and generalization ability.

Abstract:While fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) provide an effective means to collect data from sensor nodes (SNs), the design of energy-efficient three-dimensional (3D) trajectories has been deterred by the lack of adequate propulsion energy models. This paper develops a new UAV-assisted data collection scheme to save the energy of the UAV and SNs by holistically designing the 3D trajectory and data collection schedule of a fixed-wing UAV. The key aspect is that a new propulsion energy model is established for a fixed-wing UAV flying a 3D trajectory. Another important aspect is that a new approach is developed to save the energy of UAV-based data collection by jointly optimizing the 3D trajectory and the data collection schedule. Difference-of-convex functions and successive convex approximation are employed to tackle the non-convexity pertaining to the new model. Simulations show the validity of the new model and considerable energy saving by optimizing the 3D trajectories for the UAV, as compared to two-dimensional (2D) trajectories.

Abstract:This work proposes power-efficient trajectory adjustment and temporal routing algorithms for a network of fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) deployed to gather data from underlying sensors in the field. To stay afloat, each UAV follows a circular trajectory above its responsible service area with a radius that can be adjusted to reduce its propulsion energy consumption. The data gathered by the UAVs are sent to the data-gathering node using multihop transmissions over other circulating UAVs. First, given the multihop transmission paths from all UAVs to the data-gathering node, power-efficient flight-radius adjustment strategies are proposed based on the total power minimization and lifetime maximization criteria while maintaining connectivity over the multihop paths. Then, by establishing the relationship between routing in UAV networks and that in general temporal graphs, we propose a power-efficient (PE) temporal path algorithm based on the minimization of the total pair-wise flight power consumption among consecutive UAVs on the path. Finally, we propose an iterative procedure to refine the initial phases of the UAVs' circular trajectories to further improve the power efficiency. Computer simulations are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed schemes in terms of both total power minimization and lifetime maximization.

Abstract:Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can enhance the performance of cellular networks, due to their high mobility and efficient deployment. In this paper, we present a first study on how the user mobility affects the UAVs' trajectories of a multiple-UAV assisted wireless communication system. Specifically, we consider the UAVs are deployed as aerial base stations to serve ground users who move between different regions. We maximize the throughput of ground users in the downlink communication by optimizing the UAVs' trajectories, while taking into account the impact of the user mobility, propulsion energy consumption, and UAVs' mutual interference. We formulate the problem as a route selection problem in an acyclic directed graph. Each vertex represents a task associated with a reward on the average user throughput in a region-time point, while each edge is associated with a cost on the energy propulsion consumption during flying and hovering. For the centralized trajectory design, we first propose the shortest path scheme that determines the optimal trajectory for the single UAV case. We also propose the centralized route selection (CRS) scheme to systematically compute the optimal trajectories for the more general multiple-UAV case. Due to the NP-hardness of the centralized problem, we consider the distributed trajectory design that each UAV selects its trajectory autonomously and propose the distributed route selection (DRS) scheme, which will converge to a pure strategy Nash equilibrium within a finite number of iterations.

Optimal 1D Trajectory Design for UAV-Enabled Multiuser Wireless Power Transfer

Abstract:In this paper, we study an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-enabled wireless power transfer (WPT) network, where a UAV flies at a constant altitude in the sky to provide wireless energy supply for a set of ground nodes with a linear topology. Our objective is to maximize the minimum received energy among all ground nodes by optimizing the UAV's one-dimensional (1D) trajectory, subject to the maximum UAV flying speed constraint. Different from previous works that only provided heuristic and locally optimal solutions, this paper is the first work to present the globally optimal 1D UAV trajectory solution to the considered min-energy maximization problem. Towards this end, we first show that for any given speed-constrained UAV trajectory, we can always construct a maximum-speed trajectory and a speed-free trajectory, such that their combination can achieve the same received energy at all these ground nodes. Next, we transform the original UAV-speed-constrained trajectory optimization problem into an equivalent UAV-speed-free problem, which is then optimally solved via the Lagrange dual method. The obtained optimal 1D UAV trajectory solution follows the so-called successive hover-and-fly (SHF) structure, i.e., the UAV successively hovers at a finite number of hovering points each for an optimized hovering duration, and flies among these hovering points at the maximum speed. Numerical results show that our proposed optimal solution significantly outperforms the benchmark schemes in prior works under different scenarios.

Abstract:Quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have emerged as ubiquitous and agile robots and data carriers within the framework of the future Internet of Things (IoT) and mobile wireless networks. Yet, the insufficient onboard battery necessitates the optimization of energy consumption for both the UAV and IoT devices while ensuring that communication requirements are met. This paper therefore proposes a more accurate and mathematically tractable model for characterizing a UAV’s energy consumption concerning desired trajectories. This nonlinear model takes into account the UAV’s dynamics, brushless direct current (BLDC) motor dynamics, and aerodynamics. To optimize the communication time between IoT devices and the UAV, IoT devices are clustered using a modified GAK-means algorithm, with dynamically optimized communication coverage radii. Subsequently, a fly–circle–communicate (FCC) trajectory design algorithm is introduced and derived to conserve energy and save mission time. Under the FCC approach, the UAV sequentially visits the cluster centers and performs circular flight and communication. Transitions between cluster centers are smoothed via 3D Dubins curves, which provide physically achievable trajectories. Comprehensive numerical studies indicate that the proposed trajectory planning method reduces overall communication time and preserves UAV battery energy compared to other benchmark schemes.

Abstract:Due to their high mobility, flexible deployment and stable maneuverability, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been deemed as a promising and indispensable role for various emerging applications (e.g., dangerous area detection, dynamic target tracking, and map remote sensing). Compared to the static monitoring equipments, UAV-mounted high-definition camera and signal transceiver can be used cost-effectively as an on-demand aerial platform to detect the unknown region and send the real-time data back at the same time. However, these highlighted limitations of battery capacity and communication resource extremely affect the UAV’s performance such as flight endurance and data transmission. Motivated by the above conflicts, this paper aims to minimize the total energy consumed by the UAV during the region detection mission through jointly optimizing the collected data size, transmission time, and flying trajectory. Toward this end, we derive the optimal data collection and transmission time in closed forms via convex optimization, and propose a model-free reinforcement learning-based algorithm for training the UAV to plan its trajectory without knowing the environment information in advance. Simulation results validate the performance of our designs in terms of convergence, energy consumption, and energy efficiency.

Abstract:In next-generation wireless networks, high-mobility unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are promising to provide content coverage, where users can receive sufficient requested content within a given time. However, trajectory planning for multiple UAVs to provide content coverage is challenging since 1) UAVs cannot provide content coverage for all users due to the limited energy and caching storage, and 2) the trajectory planning of UAV is coupled with each other. Moreover, the complete information based trajectory planning methods are unusable since UAVs cannot obtain prior information on the rapidly changing environment. In this paper, we investigate the multi-UAV trajectory planning for energy-efficient content coverage. We first formulate an energy efficiency maximization problem considering recharging scheduling, which aims to reduce the total length of trajectories of UAVs under the quality of service (QoS) constraints. To settle environment uncertainty, the trajectory planning problem is modeled as two coupled multi-agent stochastic games, whose equilibrium constitute the optimal trajectory. To obtain the equilibrium, we propose a decentralized reinforcement learning algorithm, which can decouple the two games. We prove that the proposed algorithm can converge to the optimal solution of the Bellman equation with a higher rate compared to the centralized one. Moreover, simulation results show that the energy efficiency of the proposed algorithm is smaller than 5% compared the optimal, which is obtained with the prior information of environments.

Abstract:Nowadays, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have received growing popularity in the Internet-of-Things (IoT) which often deploys many sensors in a relatively wide region. Since the battery capacity is limited, sensors cannot transmit over a long distance. It is necessary for designing efficient sensor data collection mechanisms to prolong the lifetime of the IoT and enhance data collection efficiency. In this paper, we consider a UAV-enabled data collection scenario, where multiple heterogeneous UAVs with different energy constraints are employed to collect data from sensors. The value of data depends on the importance of the monitoring area of the sensor and the freshness of collected data. Our objective is to maximize the data collection utility by jointly optimizing the communication scheduling and trajectory of each UAV. The data collection utility is determined by the amount and value of the collected data. This problem is a variant of multiple knapsack problem, which is a classical NP-hard problem. First, we transform the initial problem into a submodular function maximization problem under energy constraints, and then we design a novel trajectory planning algorithm to maximize the data collection utility, while accounting for different values of data and different energy constraints of heterogeneous UAVs. Finally, under different network settings, the performance of the proposed trajectory planning algorithm is evaluated via extensive simulations. The results show that the proposed algorithm can obtain maximum data collection utility.

Abstract:In this article, we investigate an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted Internet of Things (IoT) system in a sophisticated 3-D environment, where the UAV's trajectory is optimized to efficiently collect data from multiple IoT ground nodes. Unlike existing approaches focusing only on a simplified 2-D scenario and the availability of perfect channel state information (CSI), this article considers a practical 3-D urban environment with imperfect CSI, where the UAV's trajectory is designed to minimize data collection completion time subject to practical throughput and flight movement constraints. Specifically, inspired by the state-of-the-art deep reinforcement learning approaches, we leverage the twin-delayed deep deterministic policy gradient (TD3) to design the UAV's trajectory and we present a TD3-based trajectory design for completion time minimization (TD3-TDCTM) algorithm. In particular, we set an additional information, i.e., the merged pheromone, to represent the state information of the UAV and environment as a reference of reward which facilitates the algorithm design. By taking the service statuses of the IoT nodes, the UAV's position, and the merged pheromone as input, the proposed algorithm can continuously and adaptively learn how to adjust the UAV's movement strategy. By interacting with the external environment in the corresponding Markov decision process, the proposed algorithm can achieve a near-optimal navigation strategy. Our simulation results show the superiority of the proposed TD3-TDCTM algorithm over three conventional nonlearning-based baseline methods.

Abstract:This article investigates the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted wireless powered Internet-of-Things system, where a UAV takes off from a data center, flies to each of the ground sensor nodes (SNs) in order to transfer energy and collect data from the SNs, and then returns to the data center. For such a system, an optimization problem is formulated to minimize the average Age of Information (AoI) of the data collected from all ground SNs. Since the average AoI depends on the UAV's trajectory, the time required for energy harvesting (EH) and data collection for each SN, these factors need to be optimized jointly. Moreover, instead of the traditional linear EH model, we employ a nonlinear model because the behavior of the EH circuits is nonlinear by nature. To solve this nonconvex problem, we propose to decompose it into two subproblems, i.e., a joint energy transfer and data collection time allocation problem and a UAV's trajectory planning problem. For the first subproblem, we prove that it is convex and give an optimal solution by using Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions. This solution is used as the input for the second subproblem, and we solve optimally it by designing dynamic programming (DP) and ant colony (AC) heuristic algorithms. The simulation results show that the DP-based algorithm obtains the minimal average AoI of the system, and the AC-based heuristic finds solutions with near-optimal average AoI. The results also reveal that the average AoI increases as the flying altitude of the UAV increases and linearly with the size of the collected data at each ground SN.

Abstract:Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-enabled communication is a promising technology to extend coverage and enhance throughput for traditional terrestrial wireless communication systems. In this paper, we consider a UAV-enabled wireless sensor network (WSN), where a multi-antenna UAV is dispatched to collect data from a group of sensor nodes (SNs). The objective is to maximize the minimum data collection rate from all SNs via jointly optimizing their transmission scheduling and power allocations as well as the trajectory of the UAV, subject to the practical constraints on the maximum transmit power of the SNs and the maximum speed of the UAV. The formulated optimization problem is challenging to solve as it involves non-convex constraints and discrete-value variables. To draw useful insight, we first consider the special case of the formulated problem by ignoring the UAV speed constraint and optimally solve it based on the Lagrange duality method. It is shown that for this relaxed problem, the UAV should hover above a finite number of optimal locations with different durations in general. Next, we address the general case of the formulated problem where the UAV speed constraint is considered and propose a traveling salesman problem (TSP)-based trajectory initialization, where the UAV sequentially visits the locations obtained in the relaxed problem with minimum flying time. Given this initial trajectory, we then find the corresponding transmission scheduling and power allocations of the SNs and further optimize the UAV trajectory by applying the block coordinate descent (BCD) and successive convex approximation (SCA) techniques. Finally, numerical results are provided to illustrate the spectrum and energy efficiency gains of the proposed scheme for multi-antenna UAV data harvesting, as compared to benchmark schemes.

Abstract:This paper studies energy-efficient unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-enabled wireless communications, where the UAV acts as a flying base station (BS) to serve the ground users (GUs) within some predetermined latency constraints, e.g., requested timeout (RT). Our goal is to design the UAV trajectory to minimize the total energy consumption while satisfying the RT requirement and energy budget, which is accomplished via jointly optimizing the trajectory and UAV's velocities along subsequent hops. The corresponding optimization problem is difficult to solve due to its non-convexity and combinatorial nature. To overcome this difficulty, we solve the original problem via two consecutive steps. Firstly, we propose two algorithms, namely heuristic search, and dynamic programming (DP) to obtain a feasible set of trajectories without violating the GU's RT requirements based on the traveling salesman problem with time window (TSPTW). Then, they are compared with exhaustive search and traveling salesman problem (TSP) used as reference methods. While the exhaustive algorithm achieves the best performance at a high computation cost, the heuristic algorithm exhibits poorer performance with low complexity. As a result, the DP is proposed as a practical trade-off between the exhaustive and heuristic algorithms. Specifically, the DP algorithm results in near-optimal performance at a much lower complexity. Secondly, for given feasible trajectories, we propose an energy minimization problem via a joint optimization of the UAV's velocities along subsequent hops. Abstract:In this article, we investigate the energy minimization problem of an unmanned-aerial-vehicle (UAV)-assisted data collection sensor network. We jointly optimize the trajectory of the UAV and the power consumption of the sensors for data uploading with the power and energy constraints of sensors. The trajectory design consists of two parts: 1) the serving orders for sensors and 2) the UAV’s hovering positions, where the latter is highly coupled with the power consumption of the sensors. To find the optimal serving orders of sensors, we formulate the problem as a standard traveling salesman problem (TSP), which can be optimally solved by the efficient Cutting-Plane method. To solve the UAV position and sensor uploading power optimization problem, we propose the PSPSCA algorithm that optimizes the transmit power by the pattern search method, while the UAV’s hovering positions are optimized by the successive-convex-approximation (SCA) method in the inner loop. To deal with the high computational complexity of the PSPSCA algorithm, we analyze the analytical relationship between optimal sensor uploading power and the UAV’s hovering positions, based on which we simplify the optimization problem and propose the AQSCA algorithm as an alternative approach. Simulation results have validated that the proposed algorithm outperforms the existing benchmark schemes.

Abstract:Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have received plenty of attention due to their high flexibility and enhanced communication ability, nonetheless, the limited onboard energy restricts UAVs' application on persistent data collection missions in large areas. In this paper, we propose a rechargeable UAV-assisted periodic data collection scheme, where a UAV is dispatched to periodically collect data from sensor nodes (SNs) in the mission area and charged by a wireless charging platform. Specifically, the periodic data collection completion time is minimized by optimizing the UAV trajectory to reach the optimal balance among the collection time, flight time, and recharging time. The formulated problem is non-convex and difficult to solve directly. To tackle this problem, we divide the main problem into two sub-problems and address them by leveraging successive convex approximation (SCA), bisection search, and heuristic methods. Then, we propose a periodic trajectory optimization algorithm to iteratively solve the two sub-problems to minimize the completion time. Furthermore, to deal with the dynamics of SNs, we propose a low-complexity trajectory adjustment strategy, where the trajectory can be maintained or adjusted locally at the SNs change, which significantly mitigates the computation cost of re-optimization. The simulation results show the superiority and robustness of the proposed scheme and the completion time is on average 39% and 33% lower than the two benchmarks, respectively.

Abstract:Fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) provide a practical means for data collection in many Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications. Secrecy and energy efficiency are crucial to the data collection, but have never been well addressed in the lack of appropriate propulsion energy models for three-dimensional (3D) flights of fixed-wing UAVs. This paper delivers a new approach to the joint optimization of the 3D flight trajectory and data collection schedule of a fixed-wing UAV for secure and energy-efficient data collection under an eavesdropping attack. A critical aspect is that we derive a new propulsion energy model for fixed-wing UAVs flying 3D trajectories. By using equivalent transformation, difference-of-convex techniques, and successive convex approximation, we convexify the model and demonstrate its viability to the design of energy-efficient 3D trajectories. Another key aspect is that we further optimize the trajectory and schedule of the UAV for secure and energy-efficient collection of secret data from sensor nodes on the ground. This is non-trivial due to the convexification of the non-smooth secrecy constraints in addition to the new 3D propulsion energy model. Simulations validate the new model and demonstrate considerable energy saving of 3D trajectories, compared to two-dimensional (2D) trajectories optimized based on the state-of-the-art 2D propulsion energy model.

Abstract:Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) exhibit great advantages in data collection from ground sensors in vast tracts of fields. Due to their limited power supply, most works assume that the UAV simply traverses each sensor’s fixed transmission range to collect data, thereby shortening the flight path. However, they neglect the quality of collected data, which may deteriorate dramatically as the transmission distance increases. In this paper, by leveraging the physical-layer protocol - LoRa, we propose a Packet Reception Ratio (PRR)-based probabilistic coverage model to evaluate the quality of data transmission, which directly determines the data acquisition efficiency. On this basis, to minimize the energy consumption of UAV and sensors while ensuring high-quality data acquisition, we formulate the UAV trajectory planning as a joint Energy Consumption and data Acquisition Efficiency (ECAE) optimization problem. To tackle the ECAE problem, we propose a Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL)-based two-stage scheme. First, an attention-based encoder-decoder model is trained to generate an initial trajectory. Then an intuitive optimization algorithm is devised to further explore the optimal trajectory. Evaluation results show that our scheme can reduce the total energy cost of UAV and sensors by 27.1% as compared to the best baseline’s policy while maintaining a promising PRR.

Abstract:Next-generation mobile networks have proposed the integration of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) as aerial base stations (UAV-BS) to serve ground nodes. Despite having advantages of using UAV-BSs, their dependence on the on-board, limited-capacity battery hinders their service continuity. Shorter trajectories can save flying energy, however, UAV-BSs must also serve nodes based on their service priority since nodes' service requirements are not always the same. In this paper, we present an energy-efficient trajectory optimization for a UAV assisted IoT system in which the UAV-BS considers the IoT nodes' service priorities in making its movement decisions. We solve the trajectory optimization problem using Double Q-Learning algorithm. Simulation results reveal that the Q-Learning based optimized trajectory outperforms a benchmark algorithm, namely Greedily-served algorithm, in terms of reducing the average energy consumption of the UAV-BS as well as the service delay for high priority nodes.
