Abstract:Braiding is a geometric concept that manifests itself in a variety of scientific contexts from biology to physics, and has been employed to classify bulk band topology in topological materials. Topological edge states can also form braiding structures, as demonstrated recently in a type of topological insulators known as Möbius insulators, whose topological edge states form two braided bands exhibiting a Möbius twist. While the formation of Möbius twist is inspiring, it belongs to the simple Abelian braid group $\mathbb{B}_2$. The most fascinating features about topological braids rely on the non-Abelianness in the higher-order braid group $\mathbb{B}_N$ ($N \geq 3$), which necessitates multiple edge bands, but so far it has not been discussed. Here, based on the gauge enriched symmetry, we develop a scheme to realize non-Abelian braiding of multiple topological edge bands. We propose tight-binding models of topological insulators that are able to generate topological edge states forming non-Abelian braiding structures. Experimental demonstrations are conducted in two acoustic crystals, which carry three and four braided acoustic edge bands, respectively. The observed braiding structure can correspond to the topological winding in the complex eigenvalue space of projective translation operator, akin to the previously established point-gap winding topology in the bulk of the Hatano-Nelson model. Our work also constitutes the realization of non-Abelian braiding topology on an actual crystal platform, but not based on the "virtual" synthetic dimensions.

Abstract:Topological phases of matter connect mathematical principles to real materials, and may shape future electronic and quantum technologies. So far, this discipline has mostly focused on single-gap topology described by topological invariants such as Chern numbers. Here, based on a tunable kagome model, we observe non-Abelian band topology and its transitions in acoustic semimetals, in which the multi-gap Hilbert space plays a key role. In non-Abelian semimetals, the topological charges of band nodes are converted through the braiding of nodes in adjacent gaps, and their behaviour cannot be captured by conventional topological band theory. Using kagome acoustic metamaterials and pump–probe measurements, we demonstrate the emergence of non-Abelian topological nodes, identify their dispersions and observe the induced multi-gap topological edge states. By controlling the geometry of the metamaterials, topological transitions are induced by the creation, annihilation, merging and splitting of band nodes. This reveals the underlying rules for the conversion and transfer of non-Abelian topological charges in multiple bandgaps. The resulting laws that govern the evolution of band nodes in non-Abelian multi-gap systems should inspire studies on multi-band topological semimetals and multi-gap topological out-of-equilibrium systems. Non-Abelian topology allows topological charges in multi-gap systems to be converted by braiding of different band nodes. Such multi-gap effects are experimentally observed in an acoustic semimetal.

Abstract:The complex energy bands of non-Hermitian systems braid in momentum space even in one dimension. Here, we reveal that the non-Hermitian braiding underlies the Hermitian topological physics with chiral symmetry under a general framework that unifies Hermitian and non-Hermitian systems. Particularly, we derive an elegant identity that equates the linking number between the knots of braiding non-Hermitian bands and the zero-energy loop to the topological invariant of chiral-symmetric topological phases in one dimension. Moreover, we find an exotic class of phase transitions arising from the critical point transforming different knot structures of the non-Hermitian braiding, which are not included in the conventional Hermitian topological phase transition theory. Nevertheless, we show the bulk-boundary correspondence between the bulk non-Hermitian braiding and boundary zero-modes of the Hermitian topological insulators. Finally, we construct typical topological phases with non-Hermitian braidings, which can be readily realized by artificial crystals.

Abstract:The non-trivial topological features in the energy band of non-Hermitian systems provide promising pathways to achieve robust physical behaviors in classical or quantum open systems. A key topological feature, unique to non-Hermitian systems, is the non-trivial winding of the energy band in the complex energy plane. Here we provide direct experimental demonstrations of such non-trivial winding, by implementing non-Hermitian lattice Hamiltonians along a frequency synthetic dimension formed in a ring resonator undergoing simultaneous phase and amplitude modulations, and by directly characterizing the complex band structures. Moreover, we show that the topological winding can be straightforwardly controlled by changing the modulation waveform. Our results open a pathway for the experimental synthesis and characterization of topologically non-trivial phases in non-conservative systems.

Abstract:Nodal lines are symmetry-protected one-dimensional band degeneracies in momentum space, which can appear in numerous topological configurations such as nodal rings, chains, links, and knots. Very recently, non-Abelian topological physics have been proposed in space-time inversion (PT) symmetric systems. One of the most special configurations in such systems is the earring nodal link, composing of a nodal chain linking with an isolated nodal line. Such earring nodal links have not been observed in real systems. We designed phononic crystals with earring nodal links, and experimentally observed two different kinds of earring nodal links by measuring the band structures. We found that the order of the nodal chain and line can be switched after band inversion but their link cannot be severed. Our Letter provides experimental evidence for phenomena unique to non-Abelian band topology and our acoustic system provides a convenient platform for studying the new materials carrying non-Abelian charges.
Observation of an acoustic topological Euler insulator with meronic waves

Abstract:Topological band theory has conventionally been concerned with the topology of bands around a single gap. Only recently non-Abelian {topologies that thrive on involving multiple gaps} were studied, unveiling a new horizon {in topological physics} beyond the conventional paradigm. Here, we report on the first experimental realization of a topological Euler insulator phase with unique meronic characterization in an acoustic metamaterial. We demonstrate that this topological phase has several nontrivial features: First, the system cannot be {described} by conventional topological band theory, but has a nontrivial Euler class that captures the unconventional geometry {of the Bloch} bands {in the Brillouin zone}. Second, we uncover in theory and probe in experiments a meronic configuration of the bulk Bloch states for the first time. Third, using a detailed symmetry {analysis}, we show that the topological Euler insulator evolves from {a non-Abelian topological semimetal phase via the annihilation of Dirac points in pairs in one of the band gaps}. With these nontrivial properties, we establish concretely an unconventional bulk-edge correspondence which is confirmed by directly measuring the edge states via {pump-probe techniques}. Our work thus unveils a nontrivial topological Euler insulator phase with {a unique} meronic {pattern} and paves the way as a platform for {non-Abelian topological} phenomena.

Abstract:Abstract The recently discovered non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE) manifests the breakdown of current classification of topological phases in energy-nonconservative systems, and necessitates the introduction of non-Hermitian band topology. So far, all NHSE observations are based on one type of non-Hermitian band topology, in which the complex energy spectrum winds along a closed loop. As recently characterized along a synthetic dimension on a photonic platform, non-Hermitian band topology can exhibit almost arbitrary windings in momentum space, but their actual phenomena in real physical systems remain unclear. Here, we report the experimental realization of NHSE in a one-dimensional (1D) non-reciprocal acoustic crystal. With direct acoustic measurement, we demonstrate that a twisted winding, whose topology consists of two oppositely oriented loops in contact rather than a single loop, will dramatically change the NHSE, following previous predictions of unique features such as the bipolar localization and the Bloch point for a Bloch-wave-like extended state. This work reveals previously unnoticed features of NHSE, and provides the observation of physical phenomena originating from complex non-Hermitian winding topology.

Abstract:Spectral and band topologies have different degrees of freedom, usually treated separately. Recent studies have shown that spectral topology is not only related to the topological phase transition of bulk bands but can also influence the original boundary states. However, the interplay of these two topologies remains elusive, and the rich phase transitions resulting from their combination have yet to be explored. Here, we construct a two-dimensional non-Hermitian topological acoustic model using honeycomb-lattice cavity-tube configurations with controllable in-plane hopping and out-of-plane radiation losses. The phase diagram obtained is based on the interaction between trivial and nontrivial topological bands and unbroken and broken parity-time symmetry, depending on the hopping difference and loss strength trade-off. We experimentally observe novel exceptional points of topological boundary states, indicating that the energy band attraction effect is more substantial for the boundary than for the bulk. These results enrich non-Hermitian topological physics and may lead to robust yet ultrasensitive sensing applications by taking advantage of both topological and parity-time systems. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevApplied.22.014046 © 2024 American Physical Society

Observation of non-Abelian band topology without time-reversal symmetry

Abstract:Going beyond the conventional theory, non-Abelian band topology uncovers the global quantum geometry of Bloch bands with multiple gaps and thus unveil a new paradigm for topological physics. However, to date, all non-Abelian topological materials are restricted to systems with time-reversal symmetry (T). Here, starting from a Kagome lattice inspired by Haldane model and designer gyromagnetic photonic crystals (PhCs), we show that T breaking can lead to rich non-Abelian topological physics, particularly the emergence of multigap antichiral edge states. Simply changing the magnetic flux of the Kagome lattice, or in-situ tuning the local magnetic field of the gyromagnetic PhCs, can lead to the unconventional creation, braiding, merging, and splitting of non-Abelian charged band nodes, alongside with the direct manipulation of the multigap antichiral edge states. Particularly, the quadratic point can be split into four Dirac points, a phenomenon unique in T-broken systems. Our theoretical and experimental findings will inspire a new direction in the study of non-Abelian physics in T-broken systems and open an unprecedent pathway for topological manipulation of electromagnetic waves.

Abstract:Disclinations-topological defects ubiquitously existing in various materials-can reveal the intrinsic band topology of the hosting material through the bulk-disclination correspondence. In low-dimensional materials and nanostructure such as graphene and fullerenes, disclinations yield curved surfaces and emergent non-Euclidean geometries that are crucial in understanding the properties of these materials. However, the bulk-disclination correspondence has never been studied in non-Euclidean geometry, nor in systems with p-orbital physics. Here, by creating p-orbital topological acoustic metamaterials with disclination-induced conic and hyperbolic surfaces, we demonstrate the rich emergent bound states arising from the interplay among the real-space geometry, the bulk band topology, and the p-orbital physics. This phenomenon is confirmed by clear experimental evidence that is consistent with theory and simulations. Our experiment paves the way toward topological phenomena in non-Euclidean geometries and will stimulate interesting research on, e.g., topological phenomena for electrons in nanomaterials with curved surfaces.

Abstract:Non-Abelian topological phases (NATPs) exhibit enigmatic intrinsic physics distinct from well-established Abelian topological phases, while lacking straightforward configuration and manipulation, especially for classical waves. In this Letter, we exploit novel braiding-type couplings among a pair of triple-component acoustic dipoles, which act as functional elements with effective imaginary couplings. Sequencing them in one dimension allows us to generate acoustic NATPs in a compact yet time-reversal invariant Hermitian system. We further provide the whole phase diagram that encompasses all i , j , and k non-Abelian phases, and directly demonstrate their unique quotient relations via different end point states. Abstract:The topological classification of energy bands has laid the foundation for the discovery of various topological phases of matter in recent decades. While previous work focused on real-energy bands in Hermitian systems, recent studies have shifted attention to the intriguing topology of complex-energy, or non-Hermitian, bands, freeing them from the constraint of energy conservation. For example, the spectral winding of complex-energy bands can give rise to unique topological structures such as braids, holding substantial promise for advancing quantum computing. However, discussions of complex-energy braids have been predominantly limited to the Abelian braid group owing to its relative simplicity. Identifying topological non-Abelian braiding remains challenging, as it lacks a universally applicable topological invariant for characterization. Here we present a machine learning algorithm for the unsupervised identification of non-Abelian braiding within multiple complex-energy bands. We demonstrate that the results are consistent with Artin's well-known topological equivalence conditions in braiding. Inspired by these findings, we introduce a winding matrix as a topological invariant for characterizing braiding topology. The winding matrix also reveals the bulk-edge correspondence of non-Hermitian bands with non-Abelian braiding. Finally, we extend our approach to identify non-Abelian braiding topology in two-dimensional and three-dimensional exceptional semimetals and address the unknotting problem in an unsupervised manner.

Abstract:Topological materials and metamaterials opened new paradigms to create and manipulate phases of matter with unconventional properties. Topological D-class phases (TDPs) are archetypes of the ten-fold classification of topological phases with particle-hole symmetry. In two dimensions, TDPs support propagating topological edge modes that simulate the elusive Majorana elementary particles. Furthermore, a piercing of π-flux Dirac-solenoids in TDPs stabilizes localized Majorana excitations that can be braided for the purpose of topological quantum computation. Such two-dimensional (2D) TDPs have been a focus in the research frontier, but their experimental realizations are still under debate. Here, with a novel design scheme, we realize 2D TDPs in an acoustic crystal by synthesizing both the particle-hole and fermion-like time reversal symmetries for a wide range of frequencies. The design scheme leverages an enriched unit cell structure with real-valued couplings that emulate the targeted Hamiltonian of TDPs with complex hoppings: A technique that could unlock the realization of all topological classes with passive metamaterials. In our experiments, we realize a pair of TDPs with opposite Chern numbers in two independent sectors that are connected by an intrinsic fermion-like time-reversal symmetry built in the system. We measure the acoustic Majorana-like helical edge modes and visualize their robust topological transport, thus revealing the unprecedented D and DIII class topologies with direct evidence. Our study opens up a new pathway for the experimental realization of two fundamental classes of topological phases and may offer new insights in fundamental physics, materials science, and phononic information processing.

Abstract:Going beyond the conventional theory, non-Abelian band topology reveals the global quantum geometry of multiple Bloch bands and unveils a new paradigm for topological physics. However, to date, experimental studies on non-Abelian topological states beyond one dimension are still restricted to systems with time-reversal ( T ) symmetry. Here, exploiting a designer gyromagnetic photonic crystal, we find rich T -broken non-Abelian topological phases and their transitions with an unexpected connection to multigap antichiral edge states. By in-situ tuning the magnetic field in the gyromagnetic photonic crystal, we can create, braid, merge, and split the non-Abelian topological nodes in a unique way. Alongside this process, the multigap antichiral edge states can be tuned versatilely, giving rise to topological edge waveguiding with frequency-dependent directionality. These findings open a new avenue for non-Abelian topological physics and topological photonics.
Braiding Topology of Non-Hermitian Open-Boundary Bands

Abstract:There has been much recent interest and progress on topological structures of the non-Hermitian Bloch bands. Here, we study the topological structures of non-Bloch bands of non-Hermitian multi-band quantum systems under open boundary conditions, which has received limited attention in prior studies. Using a continuity criterion and an efficient sub-GBZ algorithm, we establish a homotopic characterization -- braiding topology, e.g., characterized by the band's total vorticity -- for open-boundary bands and sub-GBZs. Such topological identification is robust without topological transition and emergent degenerate points, such as exceptional points. We further analyze the transition's impact on bands and spectral flows, including interesting properties unique to open boundaries, and numerically demonstrate our conclusions with tight-binding model examples. We unveil a crucial insight that open-boundary bands interchange their portions after encountering certain exceptional points. Our results enrich our foundational understanding of topological characterizations for generic non-Hermitian quantum systems.

Abstract:The interaction of band topology and disorder can give rise to intriguing phenomena. One paradigmatic example is the topological Anderson insulator, whose nontrivial topology is induced in a trivial system by disorders. In this study, we investigate the effect of purely non-Hermitian disorders on topological systems using a one-dimensional acoustic lattice with coupled resonators. Specifically, we construct a theoretical framework to describe the non-Hermitian topological Anderson insulator phase solely driven by disordered loss modulation. Then, the complete evolution of non-Hermitian disorder-induced topological phase transitions, from an initial trivial phase to a topological Anderson phase and finally to a trivial Anderson phase, is revealed experimentally using both bulk and edge spectra. Interestingly, topological modes induced by non-Hermitian disorders to be immune to both weak Hermitian and non-Hermitian disorders. These findings pave the way for future research on disordered non-Hermitian systems for novel wave manipulation.

Direct measurement of topological invariants through temporal adiabatic evolution of bulk states in the synthetic Brillouin zone

Abstract:Mathematically, topological invariants arise from the parallel transport of eigenstates on the energy bands, which, in physics, correspond to the adiabatic dynamical evolution of transient states. It determines the presence of boundary states, while lacking direct measurements. Here, we develop time-varying programmable coupling circuits between acoustic cavities to mimic the Hamiltonians in the Brillouin zone, with which excitation and adiabatic evolution of bulk states are realized in a unit cell. By extracting the Berry phases of the bulk band, topological invariants, including the Zak phase for the SSH model and the Chern number for the AAH model, are obtained convincingly. The bulk state evolution also provides insight into the topological charges of our newly developed non-Abelian models, which are also verified by observing the adiabatic eigenframe rotation. Our work not only provides a general recipe for telling various topological invariants but also sheds light on transient acoustic wave manipulations.
