Abstract:The generation of a nonlinear high-frequency response in solids from powerful optical pumps has gained momentum over the past decade. High-harmonic generation (HHG) in solids can be obtained from strong-field laser excitation, usually restricted to optical frequencies and limited both in amplitude and in harmonic order. Here, we demonstrate that high-harmonic emission can be achieved by exploiting conventional spin pumping, without the need for optical excitation. Considering a noncentrosymmetric (ferro- or antiferro-)magnet excited at a frequency ω , we demonstrate the emergence of HHG in two main regimes: (i) In the perturbative regime, where a weak spin-orbit interaction is considered, the carrier pumping features a number of harmonics with a cutoff order nmax<10 . (ii) When the spin-orbit coupling strength is close to, or higher than, the s−d exchange energy, a strongly nonlinear regime resulting from resonantlike spin-flip scattering occurs leading to the emission of a large number of harmonics. This is in sharp contrast to conventional pumping, where the corresponding time-dependent currents simply oscillate with the frequency of the magnetic drive ω . Our proposal enables the enhancement of both spin and charge dynamics by orders of magnitude. Terahertz high-harmonic generation in gapped antiferromagnetic chains

Abstract:The nonlinear dynamics of magnetization in antiferromagnets, resulting in high-frequency spin waves (high-order harmonics) as signal carriers, enable fast magnetic state switching in spintronic devices. More harmonic orders potentially allow more information to be conveyed by the spins. Developing theoretical models to describe these waves in antiferromagnets is essential for predicting their properties and guiding experimental efforts. Here, we consider the role of linear and quadratic spin-phonon couplings (SPCs) in achieving high-order harmonics in the THz magnetization of a gapped antiferromagnetic spin chain. A THz steady laser's electric field indirectly drives spins via phonons. Using spin-wave theory, mean-field theory, and the Lindblad formalism, we analyze the resulting nonlinear dynamics. We highlight the distinct mechanisms for harmonic generation when a phonon is coupled to the easy-plane and easy-axis of spins. Moreover, we observe that quadratic SPC blocks odd harmonics due to invariant inversion symmetry, while linear SPC generates both odd and even harmonics. We also investigate the effects of drive frequency, drive amplitude, phonon damping, and spin damping on the number of harmonics. Our findings offer an alternative pathway for developing nonlinear magnonics.

Magnetic dynamics driven integer and fractional high harmonic generation arising from highly nonlinear instantaneous energy levels

Abstract:We demonstrate that the strongly nonlinear regime of the magnetic dynamics driven high harmonic generation (HHG) can be captured through an adiabatic treatment. The underlying instantaneous energy dispersion reveal a highly nonlinear term that mirrors the high-frequency excitations present in non-equilibrium transport quantities. We stress out that the instantaneous energy levels dynamics carry much information on HHG and thereby provide a simplified understanding of the effect. Further, we exploit the present approach to predict the emergence of tunable integer and fractional high harmonics in the presence of a time-modulated spin-orbit interaction. Finally, we apply the approach to the case of the light driven HHG to figure out differently emerging non-linearities. Our findings initiate a new direction for harnessing HHG in both laser and precession driven ultrafast carrier dynamics.

Scaling laws of the magnetic dynamics driven high harmonic generation in spin-orbit coupled systems

Abstract:The emergence of high order harmonics in carrier pumping from magnetic dynamics in the presence of spin-orbit coupling has been only recently predicted [{Phys. Rev. B \textbf{105}, L180415 (2022)}]. In this effect, the number of the excited high harmonics is found to scale up with the spin-orbit coupling parameter, the s-d exchange constant of the magnetic system and the frequency of the driving dynamics. Motivated by the reproduction of the above-mentioned effect, Nikolić and Manjarres [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2212.06895" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2212.06895">arXiv:2212.06895</a>, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2112.14685" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2112.14685">arXiv:2112.14685</a>] confirmed that there is indeed a generation of harmonics as a result of the interplay between magnetic dynamics and spin-orbit interaction if the exchange coupling $J$ is taken very small ($J=0.1\gamma$). However, they claim that the ultrahigh harmonics obtained in the strong $J$ limit can only be a result of numerical bugs. It turns out that in these works, conclusions built from numerical simulations performed in the perturbative limit ($J/\hbar\omega\approx 10$) have been applied to criticize results obtained in the extremely high non-linear regime ($J/\hbar\omega>10^3$). Regarding this fact, we find it necessary to shed light on many aspects related to the physics behind the predicted unconventional carrier pumping, in order to enlighten the readers of the proposed effect and at the same time the authors of the criticizing works. Here, we present numerical simulations of the scaling laws underlying the effect. We study the low s-d exchange coupling limit, corresponding to the regime studied in the above mentioned criticizing works. And further explore, the high s-d coupling regime where the extremely nonlinear emission is expected. Furthermore, we provide more insights on the effect and demonstrate its robustness and reproducibility in both 1D and 2D magnetic structures.

High harmonic generation from electrons moving on topological spin textures

Abstract:High harmonic generation (HHG) is a striking phenomenon, which reflects the ultrafast dynamics of electrons. Recently, it has been demonstrated that HHG can be used to reconstruct not only the energy band structure but also the geometric structure characterized by the Berry curvature. Here, we numerically investigate HHG arising from electrons coupled with a topological spin texture in a spin scalar chiral state where time reversal symmetry is broken. In this system, a sign change in scalar chirality alters the sign of the Berry curvature while keeping the energy band structure unchanged, allowing us to discuss purely geometrical effects on HHG. Notably, we found that, when the optical frequency is significantly lower than the energy gap, the sign of scalar chirality largely affects the longitudinal response parallel to the optical field rather than the transverse response. Our analysis suggests that this can be attributed to interband currents induced by the recombination of electron-hole pairs whose real-space trajectories are modulated by the anomalous velocity term.

[Hyperglycemia controlled with GIK solution in non-diabetic patients subjected to heart surgery].

Abstract:UNLABELLED We prospectively compared, the glucose-insulin-potassium (GIK) solution 1,000 mL 10% glucose, 20 units of fast acting insulin and 60 mEq of potassium chloride, against a GIK solution with 1,000 mL of glucose, 40 units of fast acting insulin an 120 mEq of chloride, in the hyperglycemic control of non-diabetic patient subjected to cardiac surgery. We divided 40 patients in four groups ten patients each. Group A was the control they received 1,000 mL of 10% glucose in water, 20 units of fast acting insulin and 60 mEq of potassium chloride in a drops/ hour dose without an infusion pump. Group B received the same solution in a 50 mL/hour dose. Group C received 1,000 mL of 10% glucose in water, 40 units of fast acting insulin plus, 120 mEq of potassium chloride at the same infusion rate as Group A. Group D 2 1,000 mL of 10% of glucose in water, 40 units of fast acting insulin in the same rate as Group B. The GIK solution was started after anesthesia induction and maintained all along the extracorporeal circulation, the study continued until the patient was transferred to the intensive care unit. We measured blood glucose, circulating insulin and seric levels of potassium three times; basal before the anesthetic induction, during the extracorporeal circulation and at the intensive care unit arrival. The data were analyzed with measure of central tendency, dispersion and multivariate analysis. RESULTS Among the four groups no statistically significant differences existed in demographic data. In Group A, glucose and potassium levels were higher as compared with the rest of the groups (p <0.05) in all measurements; Group D was less hyperglycaemic as compared with Groups A, B, and C. CONCLUSION The solution with low insulin dose does useful plasmatic insulin levels in the hyperglycemia in non diabetic patients subjected to cardiac surgery.

Abstract:The spontaneous magnetic orders arising in ferro-, ferri- and antiferromagnets stem from various magnetic interactions. Depending on the interplay and competition among the Heisenberg exchange interaction, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange interaction, magnetic dipolar interaction and crystal anisotropies, a great variety of magnetic textures may be stabilized, such as magnetic domain walls, vortices, Skyrmions and spiral helical structures. While each of these spin textures responds to external forces in a specific manner with characteristic resonance frequencies, they also interact with magnons, the fundamental collective excitation of the magnetic order, which can propagate in magnetic materials free of charge transport and therefore with low energy dissipation. Recent theories and experiments found that the interplay between spin waves and magnetic textures is particularly interesting and rich in physics. In this review, we introduce and discuss the theoretical framework of magnons living on a magnetic texture background, as well as recent experimental progress in the manipulation of magnons via magnetic textures. The flexibility and reconfigurability of magnetic textures are discussed regarding the potential for applications in information processing schemes based on magnons.

High-harmonic generation in spin and charge current pumping at ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic resonance in the presence of spin-orbit coupling

Abstract:One of the cornerstone effects in spintronics is spin pumping by dynamical magnetization that is steadily precessing (around, e.g., the $z$-axis) with frequency $\omega_0$, due to absorption of low-power microwaves of frequency $\omega_0$ under the resonance conditions and in the absence of any applied bias voltage. The two-decades-old "standard model" of this effect, based on the scattering theory of adiabatic quantum pumping, predicts that component $I^{S_z}$ of spin current vector $\big( I^{S_x}(t),I^{S_y}(t),I^{S_z} \big) \propto \omega_0$ is time-independent while $I^{S_x}(t)$ and $I^{S_y}(t)$ oscillate harmonically in time with a single frequency $\omega_0$; whereas pumped charge current is zero $I \equiv 0$ in the same adiabatic $\propto \omega_0$ limit. Here we employ more general than "standard model" approaches, time-dependent nonequilibrium Green's function (NEGF) and Floquet-NEGF, to predict unforeseen features of spin pumping -- precessing localized magnetic moments within ferromagnetic metal (FM) or antiferromagnetic metal (AFM), whose conduction electrons are exposed to spin-orbit coupling (SOC) of either intrinsic or proximity origin, will pump both spin $I^{S_\alpha}(t)$ and charge $I(t)$ currents. All four of these functions harmonically oscillate in time at both even an odd integer multiples $N\omega_0$ of the driving frequency $\omega_0$. The cutoff order of such high-harmonics increases with SOC strength, reaching $N_\mathrm{max} \simeq 11$ in the chosen-for-demonstration one-dimensional FM or AFM models. Higher cutoff $N_\mathrm{max} \simeq 25$ can be achieved in realistic two-dimensional (2D) FM models defined on the honeycomb lattice, where we provide prescription on how to realize them using 2D magnets and their heterostructures.

Abstract:Generation and control of topological spin textures constitutes one of the most exciting challenges of modern spintronics given their potential applications in information storage technologies. Of particular interest are magnetic insulators, which due to low damping, absence of Joule heating and reduced dissipation could provide energy‐efficient spin‐textures platform. Here we demonstrate that the interplay between sample thickness, external magnetic fields and optical excitations can generate a prolific paramount of spin textures, and their coexistence in insulating CrBr3 van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnets. Using high‐resolution magnetic force microscopy and large‐scale micromagnetic simulation methods, we demonstrate the existence of a large region in T‐B phase diagram where different stripe domains, skyrmion crystals and magnetic domains exist and can be intrinsically selected or transformed to each‐other via a phase‐switch mechanism. Lorentz transmission electron microscopy unveiled the mixed chirality of the magnetic textures which are of Bloch‐type at given conditions but can be further manipulated into Néel‐type or hybrid‐type via thickness‐engineering. The topological phase transformation between the different magnetic objects could be further inspected by standard photoluminescence optical probes resolved by circular polarization indicative of an existance of exciton‐skyrmion coupling mechanism. Our findings identified vdW magnetic insulators as a promising framework of materials for the manipulation and generation of highly ordered skyrmion lattices relevant for device integration at the atomic level. Abstract:Linearly polarized vector beams are structured lasers whose topology is characterized by a well-defined Poincaré index, which is a topological invariant during high-order harmonic generation. As such, harmonics are produced as extreme-ultraviolet vector beams that inherit the topology of the driver. This holds for isotropic targets such as noble gases, but analogous behaviour in crystalline solids is still open to discussion. Here, we demonstrate that this conservation rule breaks in crystalline solids, in virtue of their anisotropic non-linear susceptibility. We identify the topological properties of the harmonic field as unique probes, sensitive to both the microscopic and macroscopic features of the target's complex non-linear response. Our simulations, performed in single-layer graphene, show that the harmonic field is split into a multi-beam structure whose topology encodes information about laser-driven electronic dynamics. Our work promotes the topological analysis of the high-order harmonic field as a spectroscopic tool to reveal the nonlinearities in the coupling of light and target symmetries.

Abstract:The generation of high-order harmonics in solid crystals has received considerable attention recently. Using a driver laser with 0.8 μm wavelength and 28 fs ultrashort pulses, we present experimental results, accompanied with theoretical considerations, suggesting that the actual sources of the harmonics are nanometer-sized localized and transient electronic states on the surface of the materials when the laser intensity is in the non-perturbative regime. Adaptation of the bond model of the harmonic generation into the non-perturbative regime and including the quantum features of the process provide a localized excitation approach that correctly describes the measured polarization dependence of the harmonic signal, reflecting the microscopic surface structure and symmetries of the examined materials.
Terahertz field-driven magnon upconversion in an antiferromagnet

Abstract:Tailored light excitation and nonlinear control of lattice vibrations have emerged as powerful strategies to manipulate the properties of quantum materials out of equilibrium. Generalizing the use of coherent phonon-phonon interactions to nonlinear couplings among other types of collective modes would open unprecedented opportunities in the design of novel dynamic functionalities in solids. For example, the collective excitations of magnetic order -- magnons -- can carry information with little energy dissipation, and their coherent and nonlinear control would provide an attractive route to achieve collective-mode-based information processing and storage in forthcoming spintronics and magnonics. Here, we discover that intense terahertz (THz) fields can initiate processes of magnon upconversion mediated by an intermediate magnetic resonance. By using a suite of advanced spectroscopic tools, including a newly demonstrated two-dimensional (2D) THz polarimetry technique enabled by single-shot detection, we unveil the unidirectional nature of coupling between distinct magnon modes of a canted antiferromagnet. Calculations of spin dynamics further suggest that this coupling is a universal feature of antiferromagnets with canted magnetic moments. These results demonstrate a route to inducing desirable energy transfer pathways and THz-induced coupling between coherent magnons in solids and pave the way for a new era in the development of ultrafast control of magnetism.

Abstract:Abstract The ever-growing demand for device miniaturization and energy efficiency in data storage and computing technology has prompted a shift towards antiferromagnetic topological spin textures as information carriers. This shift is primarily owing to their negligible stray fields, leading to higher possible device density and potentially ultrafast dynamics. We realize in this work such chiral in-plane topological antiferromagnetic spin textures namely merons, antimerons, and bimerons in synthetic antiferromagnets by concurrently engineering the effective perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, the interlayer exchange coupling, and the magnetic compensation ratio. We demonstrate multimodal vector imaging of the three-dimensional Néel order parameter, revealing the topology of those spin textures and a globally well-defined chirality, which is a crucial requirement for controlled current-induced dynamics. Our analysis reveals that the interplay between interlayer exchange and interlayer magnetic dipolar interactions plays a key role to significantly reduce the critical strength of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction required to stabilize topological spin textures, such as antiferromagnetic merons, in synthetic antiferromagnets, making them a promising platform for next-generation spintronics applications.

Abstract:The interaction between solid materials and an optical vortex has garnered significant attention in recent years. Here, we study theoretically the high-order harmonic generation (HHG) of crystalline solids under the spatiotemporal optical-vortex light. We develop a quantum-orbit model to describe the intricate electron motion driven by a strong optical vortex, demonstrating the conservation law of spin and transverse orbital angular momenta in the HHG process. Harnessing the bicircular spatiotemporal vortex light field, we generate high-order harmonics with the hybrid spin and transverse orbital angular momentum. The proportions of different orbital angular-momentum components of harmonics in solids can also be tuned by adjusting the intensity ratio of the two light beams.
Coherent Terahertz Radiation Via Ultrafast Manipulation of Spin Currents in Ferromagnetic Heterostructures

Abstract:The development of efficient terahertz (THz) radiation sources is driven by the scientific and technological applications. To date, as far as the radiation of THz pulses is concerned, the widely used methods are biased semiconductor, electro-optical crystal and air plasma, which are excited separately by femtosecond laser pulses. The mechanisms involved in these THz sources are photo-carrier acceleration, second order nonlinear effect, and plasma oscillations, respectively. Here, we report the generation of coherent THz radiation in the designed ferromagnetic/non-magnetic metallic W/CoFeB/Pt and Ta/CoFeB/Pt trilayers on SiO2 substrates, excited separately by ultrafast laser pulses. The transient THz electric field is fully inverted when the magnetization is reversed, which indicates a strong connection between THz radiation and spin order of the sample. We present the THz radiation results of the bilayers, CoFeB/W, CoFeB/Pt and CoFeB/Ta, which are comprised of the trilayer heterostructures used in our experiments. We find that all experimental results are in good agreement with the results from the inversed spin-Hall effect (ISHE) mechanism. Owing to the ISHE, the transient spin current converts into a transient transverse charge current, which launches the THz electromagnetic wave. In our experiments, W or Ta has an opposite spin Hall angle to Pt. Therefore, the amplitude of the THz emission can be increased by a constructive superposition of two charge currents in metallic layers. Our results indicate that the peak-values of the THz radiation covering the 0-2.5 THz range from W/CoFeB/Pt and Ta/CoFeB/Pt are stronger than that from 0.5 mm thick ZnTe (110) crystal, under very similar excitation conditions. Finally, we investigate the dependence of peak-to-peak values for two different heterostructures on the pump fluence. The saturations of THz pulse at pump fluences of~0.47 mJ/cm2 and~0.61 mJ/cm2 are found for W/CoFeB/Pt and Ta/CoFeB/Pt heterostructures, respectively. The saturation can be generally attributed to the spin accumulation effect and laser-induced thermal effect. Our results indicate that the spin accumulation effect, by which the density of spin-polarized electrons is restricted in a non-magnetic metallic layer, is slightly less pronounced for Ta/CoFeB/Pt system at high fluences. Our findings provide a new pathway for fabricating the spintronic THz emitter, which is comparable to the conventional nonlinear optical crystals.
Topological phase transitions and thermal Hall effect in a noncollinear spin texture

Abstract:The noncollinear spin textures provide promising avenues to stabilize exotic magnetic phases and excitations. They have attracted vast attention owning to their nontrivial band topology in the past decades. Distinct from the conventional route of involving the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in a honeycomb magnet, the interplay of bond-dependent Kitaev and $\Gamma$ interactions, originating from the spin-orbit coupling and octahedra crystal field in real materials, has demonstrated to be another source to generate noncollinear spin textures with multiple spins in a magnetic unit cell. Notably, earlier works have revealed a triple-meron crystal (TmX) consisting of eighteen spins in the frustrated Kitaev-$\Gamma$ model. Aligning with previous efforts, here we attempt to identify that the TmX hosts several peculiar features with the help of the linear spin-wave theory. To begin with, the symmetric anisotropic exchanges are beneficial for the existence of nonreciprocal magnons, which are stabilized by an external magnetic field. Further, within the regime of TmX, successive topological phase transitions occur, accompanied by the changes of Chern number in value and thermal Hall conductivity in sign. In addition, topological nature of magnons is also verified by the onset of chiral edge modes in a nanoribbon geometry. Our findings pave the way to study topological phenomena of noncollinear spin textures in potential Kitaev materials.

A route towards stable homochiral topological textures in A-type antiferromagnets

Abstract:Topologically protected whirling magnetic textures could emerge as data carriers in next-generation post-Moore computing. Such textures are abundantly observed in ferromagnets (FMs); however, their antiferromagnetic (AFM) counterparts are expected to be even more relevant for device applications, as they promise ultra-fast, deflection-free dynamics whilst being robust against external fields. Unfortunately, they have remained elusive, hence identifying materials hosting such textures is key to developing this technology. Here, we present comprehensive micromagnetic and analytical models investigating topological textures in the broad material class of A-type antiferromagnets, specifically focusing on the prototypical case of $\alpha \text{-Fe}_2 \text{O}_3$,an emerging candidate for AFM spintronics. By exploiting a symmetry breaking interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (iDMI), it is possible to stabilize a wide topological family, including AFM (anti)merons and bimerons and the hitherto undiscovered AFM skyrmions. Whilst iDMI enforces homochirality and improves the stability of these textures, the widely tunable anisotropy and exchange interactions enable unprecedented control of their core dimensions. We then present a unifying framework to model the scaling of texture sizes based on a simple dimensional analysis. As the parameters required to host and tune homochiral AFM textures may be obtained by rational materials design of $\alpha \text{-Fe}_2 \text{O}_3$, it could emerge as a promising platform to initiate AFM topological spintronics.

Abstract:Antiferromagnetic (AFM) materials possess a well-recognized potential for ultrafast data processing thanks to their intrinsic ultrafast spin dynamics, absence of stray fields, and large spin transport effects. The very same properties, however, make their manipulation difficult, requiring frequencies in THz range and magnetic fields of tens of Teslas. Switching of AFM order implies going into the nonlinear regime, a largely unexplored territory. Here we use THz light from a free electron laser to drive antiferromagnetic NiO into a highly nonlinear regime and steer it out of nonlinearity with magnetic field from a 33-Tesla Bitter magnet. This demonstration of large-amplitude dynamics represents a crucial step towards ultrafast resonant switching of AFM order.

Abstract:The generation of high-order harmonics in bulk solids subjected to intense ultrashort laser pulses has opened up new avenues for research in extreme nonlinear optics and light–matter interaction on subcycle time scales. Despite significant advancement over the past decade, a complete understanding of the involved phenomena is still lacking. High-harmonic generation in solids is currently understood as arising from nonlinear intraband currents, interband recollision, and ionization-related phenomena. As all of these mechanisms involve or rely upon laser-driven excitation, we combine measurements of the angular dependence of nonlinear absorption and high-order harmonic generation in bulk crystals to demonstrate the relation between high-harmonic emission and nonlinear, laser-induced ionization in solids. An unambiguous correlation between the emission of harmonics and laser-induced ionization is found experimentally, which is supported by numerical solutions of the semiconductor Bloch equations and an analytical model of orientation-dependent ionization rates using maximally localized Wannier functions.
