Abstract:The rechargeable magnesium ion battery is currently investigated in response to several challenges of lithium ion batteries,[1] such as cost, resource availability and safety issues related to risk of thermal runaway. The lithium ion batteries have and are predicted to dominate the portable battery market for a long time due to the high superior power density, while rechargeable magnesium batteries may play an important role in stationary energy storage systems and auxiliary power applications where the low cost and high reliability under a wide temperature range are more important than low weight and high power density. Based on similar principles as the lithium ion battery, rechargeable magnesium ion batteries involve a reversible insertion/extraction of magnesium ions into/from a host matrix (cathode or anode materials) during the discharging and charging, and two electrons can be transferred accompanying one magnesium ion migration. Thus the specific volumetric capacity of magnesium metal can reach 3833 mAh/cm3, which is higher than that for lithium metal (2046 mAh/cm3). [2] Similar to lithium ion batteries, it is mainly the cathode materials which limits the batterie’s properties such as energy density, safety and life cycle. In this work, nanostructured MgFeSiO4/C composite cathodes are prepared by a modified sol-gel method combined with carbothermal reduction. Fig. 1 demonstrates the Pawley fitting of the X-ray diffraction for the MgFeSiO4/C composite. The composite materials are investigated electrochemically using the developed composite materials as the cathode, magnesium alloys as the anode and a state-of-the art electrolyte. Abstract:C343, a common molecular probe utilized in solvation dynamics experiments, was studied in homogeneous media. Absorption, emission, and (1)HNMR spectroscopies were used to investigate the behavior of C343 in benzene and in benzene/n-heptane mixtures. We demonstrate the implications of the medium polarity, measured as the Kamlet-Taft polarity-polarizability (pi*) parameter, in the C343 inter/intramolecular hydrogen bond (H-bond) interactions and the role that this interaction plays in the dimerization process of the dye. In pure benzene, the dimer prevails because the intermolecular H-bond interaction is favored. On the other hand, as the n-heptane content increases the intramolecular H-bond is the strongest and the C343 monomer is favored. As the polarity of the medium decreases, the solvophobic interaction makes that C343 monomer species experiences a more complicated aggregation process beyond the simple monomer dimer equilibrium present in pure benzene. Thus, the addition of n-heptane to the mixture yields a C343 higher-order aggregates species. Thus, our work reveals the importance that the medium has on the behavior of a widespread dye used as chromophore for very different systems such as homogeneous and microheterogenous media. This is very important since the use of chromophores without understanding its chemistry can induce artifacts into the interpretation of solvation dynamics in heterogeneous environments, in particular, those provided by biological systems such as proteins. Considerable care in choosing and characterizing the system is required to analyze the results fully.

Abstract:For practical room-temperature magnesium rechargeable battery operation, utilizing the nano-sized MgMn2O4 spinel as cathode material is effective way to have high rate-capabilities; however, electrolyte decomposition at the cathode/electrolyte interface is inevitable. In this work, a Mg-Fe binary oxide is coated onto nano-sized MgMn2O4 to form stable cathode electrolyte interface (CEI). This developed cathode material suppresses the electrolyte decomposition and improves the cyclability at room temperature.

Unexpected discovery of magnesium-vanadium spinel oxide containing extractable Mg2+ as a high-capacity cathode material for magnesium ion batteries

Abstract:Magnesium ion batteries (MIBs) have attracted significant attention as a promising candidate for the next generation energy storage system owing to their large volumetric capacity and abundant resource. Currently, several researchers have focused on Mg-free materials to be used as cathode in MIBs; But the exploration of Mg-rich electrode materials will promote the development of magnesium batteries towards obtaining more flexible MIBs. Herein, a Mg(Mg0.5V1.5)O4 is investigated as a potential cathode material, in which the Mg2+ can be extracted and the fast Mg2+ reaction kinetics. Benefited from the exceptional cathode, the Mg battery shows a high reversible specific capacity of 250 mA h g−1 at 100 mA g−1 and capacity retention of 100 mA h g−1 after 500 cycles at high rate of 1 A g−1. The excellent rate capability and desirable cycling performance obtained herein outperformed those of previously reported magnesium spinel oxides. It is also demonstrated that Mg2+ extraction/insertion mechanism of Mg(Mg0.5V1.5)O4 is related to the coexistence of two-phase process and single-phase solid solution reaction through a series of systematic in situ/ex situ characterizations. X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) demonstrates that the valence state of vanadium changes and the octahedral symmetry of vanadium site varies due to the extraction of Mg2+ from spinel Mg(Mg0.5V1.5)O4. Significantly, the cathode containing extractable Mg2+ can be coupled with Mg-free anode materials (Na2Ti3O7) to assemble a full cell in Mg(TFSI)2/acetonitrile electrolyte, displaying a discharge capacity of 102 mA h g−1 after 100 cycles at 50 mA g−1. The encouraging results show that the Mg(Mg0.5V1.5)O4 is a promising electrode material, which paves ways for the development and further improvements of MIBs.

Abstract:Aqueous rechargeable magnesium ion batteries (ARMBs) have obtained more attention due to the two-electrons transfer nature, low cost and safety. However, the scarcity of cathode materials seriously hinders the development of ARMBs because of the unfavorable strong interaction between Mg2+ and cathode material. Herein, we choose a pre-treated spinel Mn3O4 cathode for aqueous Mg2+ storage. The pre-treatment in Na2SO4 solution induces the grain refinement decorated with tortuous amorphous ion diffusion channels, facilitating the production of electrochemical reaction active sites and the diffusion of Mg2+, respectively, which achieve a (sub-)surface pseudocapacitance reaction between Mn (II) and Mn (III). As a result, the pre-treated Mn3O4 cathode exhibits a package of optimal performances, i.e., a capacity of 98.9 mAh g−1 and a high capacity retention rate of 99.4% after 2000 cycles. To the best of our knowledge, our work not only provides a new reaction mechanism of spinel Mn3O4 in aqueous batteries system, but also affords a high cycle stability electrode material for rechargeable Mg2+ energy storage.

Abstract:This work is developed an advanced non‐nucleophilic Mg(AlCl4)2‐IL‐DME‐M4 electrolyte and suitable MoS2@CMK/S cathode. Due to the in situ formation of advantageous MgF2 containing SEI at Mg/electrolyte interface, the assembled Mg/S batteries are delivered the highest capacity of 1210 mAh g‐1 at 0.1 C and exhibited excellent long‐term cycling stability with reversible capacity of 370 mAh g‐1 at 1.0 C for 600 cycles. Rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) are considered as one of the most promising candidates for next‐generation batteries. However, the popularization of RMBs is seriously plagued due to the lack of suitable non‐nucleophilic electrolytes and the passivation of Mg anode. Herein, a novel non‐nucleophilic electrolyte is developed by introducing (s)‐1‐methoxy‐2‐propylamine (M4) into themagnesium aluminum chloride complex (MACC)‐like electrolyte. The as‐synthesizes Mg(AlCl4)2‐IL‐DME‐M4 electrolyte enables robust reversible cycling of Mg plating/stripping with low overpotential, high anodic stability, and ionic conductivity (8.56 mS cm−1). These features should be mainly attributed to the in situ formation of an MgF2 containing Mg2+‐conducting interphase, which dramatically suppresses the passivation and parasitic reaction of Mg anode with electrolyte. Remarkably, the Mg/S batteries assemble with as‐synthesize electrolyte and a new type MoS2@CMK/S cathode deliver unprecedented electrochemical performance. Specifically, the Mg/S battery exhibited the highest reversible capacity up to 1210 mAh g−1 at 0.1 C, excellent rate capability and satisfactory long‐term cycling stability with a reversible capacity of 370 mAh g−1 (coulombic efficiency of ≈100%) at 1.0 C for 600 cycles. The study findings provide a novel strategy and inspiration for designing efficient non‐nucleophilic Mg electrolyte and suitable sulfur‐host materials for practical Mg/S battery applications.

Abstract:Rechargeable Mg batteries are a promising energy storage technology to overcome the limitations inherent to Li ion batteries. A critical challenge in advancing Mg batteries is the lack of suitable cathode materials. In this work, we report a cathode design that incorporates S functionality into two-dimensional metal-organic-frameworks (2D-MOFs). This new cathode material enables good Mg2+ storage capacity and outstanding cyclability. It was found that upon the initial Mg2+ insertion and disinsertion, there is an apparent structural transformation that crumbles the layered 2D framework, leading to amorphization. The resulting material serves as the active material to host Mg2+ through reduction and/or oxidation of S and, to a limited extent, O. The reversible nature of S and O redox chemistry was confirmed by spectroscopic characterizations and validated by density functional calculations. Importantly, during the Mg2+ insertion and disinsertion process, the 2D nature of the framework was maintained, which plays a key role in enabling the high reversibility of the MOF cathode.

Abstract:Rechargeable magnesium battery (rMB) has received increased attention as a promising alternative to current Li-ion technology. However, the lack of appropriate cathode that provides high-energy density and good sustainability greatly hinders the development of practical rMBs. To date, the successful Mg2+-intercalation was only achieved in only a few cathode hosts, one of which is manganese dioxide. This review summarizes the research activity of studying MnO2 in magnesium cells. In recent years, the cathodic performance of MnO2 was impressively improved to the capacity of >150–200 mAh g−1 at voltage of 2.6–2.8 V with cyclability to hundreds or more cycles. In addition to reviewing electrochemical performance, we sketch a mechanistic picture to show how the fundamental understanding about MnO2 cathode has been changed and how it paved the road to the improvement of cathode performance.

Synchrotron Radiation Spectroscopic Studies of Mg2+ Storage Mechanisms in High‐Performance Rechargeable Magnesium Batteries with Co‐Doped FeS2 Cathodes

Abstract:Co doping is proven to expand the crystal lattice and reduce particle sizes for FeS2 while the valence states are little influenced. Coupling with a non‐nucleophilic (R‐PhOMgCl)2‐AlCl3/THF electrolyte, Co‐doped FeS2 cathodes using Cu collectors show impressive electrochemical performance for magnesium batteries. Charcterizations including X‐ray diffraction, X‐ray photoelectron spectra and X‐ray absorption near edge structure further reveal Mg2+ storage mechanisms. Rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) are one of the more promising future energy storage systems. This work proposes a non‐nucleophilic phenolate‐based magnesium complex (PMC) electrolyte enabling reversible Mg stripping/plating with a low over‐potential of 84.3 mV at 1 mA cm–2. Subsequently, Co doping is introduced to prepare FeS2, Fe0.9Co0.1S2, Fe0.75Co0.25S2 and Fe0.5Co0.5S2. Multiple characterizations confirm that Co doping can expand the crystal lattice and reduce particle sizes, thus benefiting cathode reactions. With Co doping, Fe orbitals can be expected to transform from high spin to low spin states without valence changes while the spin state of Co atoms is little influenced. Then, Co‐doped FeS2 cathodes coated on copper collectors coupling with a PMC electrolyte for RMBs show superior electrochemical performance among reported chalcogenide cathodes, displaying a maximum discharge capacity (700 mAh g–1) at 0.1 A g–1. Specifically, Fe0.5Co0.5S2 cathodes exhibit the best cycling stability and shortest activation time. Even at 1 A g–1, a discharge capacity (164 mAh g–1) is still achieved after 1000 cycles. Mechanistic studies indicate that copper collector participates in the cathode reactions accompanied by Cu1.8S generation while Fe and Co species play a synergistic catalytic role, providing effective tactics for rational design of electrolytes, conversion type cathodes, and collectors.

Abstract:Rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMB) have been regarded as an alternative to lithium‐based batteries because of their abundant elemental resource, high theoretical volumetric capacity, and multi‐electron redox reaction without the dendrite formation of magnesium metal anode. However, their development is impeded by their poor electrode/electrolyte compatibility and the strong Coulombic effect of the multivalent Mg2+ ions in cathode materials. Herein, copper sulfide material is developed as a high‐energy cathode for RMBs with a non‐corrosive Mg‐ion electrolyte. Given the benefit of its optimized interlayer structure, good compatibility with the electrolyte, and enhanced surface area, the as‐prepared copper sulfide cathode exhibits unprecedented electrochemical Mg‐ion storage properties, with the highest specific capacity of 477 mAh g−1 and gravimetric energy density of 415 Wh kg−1 at 50 mA g−1, among the reported cathode materials of metal oxides, metal chalcogenides, and polyanion‐type compounds for RMBs. Notably, an impressive long‐term cycling performance with a stable capacity of 111 mAh g−1 at 1 C (560 mA g−1) is achieved over 1000 cycles. The results of the present study offer an avenue for designing high‐performance cathode materials for RMBs and other multivalent batteries.

Abstract:Owing to the advantages of high safety, low cost, high theoretical volumetric capacities, and environmental friendliness, magnesium-ion batteries (MIBs) have more feasibility for large-scale energy storage compared to lithium-ion batteries. However, lack of suitable cathode materials due to sluggish kinetics of magnesium ion is one of the biggest challenges. Herein, water-pillared sodium vanadium bronze nanowires (Na2 V6 O16 ·1.63H2 O) are reported as cathode material for MIBs, which display high performance in magnesium storage. The hydrated sodium ions provide excellent structural stability. The charge shielding effect of lattice water enables fast Mg2+ diffusion. It exhibits high specific capacity of 175 mAh g-1 , long cycle life (450 cycles), and high coulombic efficiency (≈100%). At high current density of 200 mA g-1 , the capacity retention is up to 71% even after 450 cycles (compared to the highest capacity), demonstrating excellent long-term cycling performance. The nature of charge storage kinetics is explored. Furthermore, a highly reversible structure change during the electrochemical process is proved by comprehensive electrochemical analysis. The remarkable electrochemical performance makes Na2 V6 O16 ·1.63H2 O a promising cathode material for low-cost and safe MIBs.

Abstract:Rechargeable magnesium/sulfur (Mg/S) battery is widely regarded as one of the most promising candidates for post-lithium batteries. However, a key factor restricting its application is the lack of a proper Mg electrolyte. Herein, we developed a coordination pre-protection strategy to synthesize a mono-magnesium ion, non-nucleophilic electrolyte capable of highly reversible Mg electrodeposition (up to 100% coulombic efficiency), enduring high current density (5 mA cm(-2)), and enabling a stable electrochemical potential window over 3.5 V at room temperature. Using the as-prepared electrolyte, Mg/S cells with a good cycling stability over 100 cycles were achieved. For the first time, in-situ microscopic observation of the electrochemical magnesium deposition/stripping process in this new electrolyte was investigated.
A Redox-Active Iron-Organic Framework Cathodes for Sustainable Magnesium Metal Batteries

Abstract:Rechargeable magnesium metal batteries (RMBs) have shown promising prospects in sustainable energy storage due to the high crustal abundance, safety, and potentially large specific capacity of magnesium. However, their development is constrained by the lack of effective cathode materials that can achieve high capacity and stable magnesium storage at a practically reasonable rate. Herein, we construct a three-dimensional (3D) iron(III)-dihydroxy-benzoquinone (Fe2(DHBQ)3) metal-organic framework (MOF) material with dual redox centers of Fe3+ cations and DHBQ2- anions for reversible storage of Mg2+ in RMBs. Spectroscopic analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal the redox chemistry of both Fe3+ ions and carbonyls from DHBQ ligands during electrochemical processes. Benefiting from the rational structure, the Fe2(DHBQ)3∥Mg cells exhibit a high reversible capacity of 395.3 mAh/g, large energy density of 463.5 Wh/kg, and high power density of 2456.0 W/kg. Moreover, the high electronic conductivity (8.35 × 10-5 S/cm) and favorable diffusion path of Mg2+ in Fe2(DHBQ)3 endow the cells with exceptional cycling stability and rate capability with a long life of 5000 cycles at 2000 mA/g. The dual redox-active MOF demonstrates a category of advanced cathode materials for high-performance RMBs.
Accessing Mg‐Ion Storage in V2PS10 via Combined Cationic‐Anionic Redox with Selective Bond Cleavage

Abstract:Magnesium batteries attract interest as alternative energy-storage devices because of elemental abundance and potential for high energy density. Development is limited by the absence of suitable cathodes, associated with poor diffusion kinetics resulting from strong interactions between Mg2+ and the host structure. V2PS10 is reported as a positive electrode material for rechargeable magnesium batteries. Cyclable capacity of 100 mAh g-1 is achieved with fast Mg2+ diffusion of 7.2[[EQUATION]]10-11-4[[EQUATION]]10-14 cm2s-1. The fast insertion mechanism results from combined cationic redox on the V site and anionic redox on the (S2)2- site; enabled by reversible cleavage of S–S bonds, identified by X-ray photoelectron and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Detailed structural characterisation with maximum entropy method analysis, supported by density functional theory calculations and projected density of states analysis, reveals that the sulphur species involved in anion redox are not connected to the transition metal centres, spatially separating the two redox processes. This facilitates fast and reversible Mg insertion in which the nature of the redox process depends on the cation insertion site, creating a synergy between the occupancy of specific Mg sites and the location of the electrons transferred.

This electrolyte boasts superior interface contact, competitive room‐temperature ionic conductivity, excellent compatibility with Mg anode, and versatile cathodes. The full cells demonstrate unprecedented ultra‐long cycle lifespan at a high rate, favorable wide‐temperature stability, satisfactory safety, and remarkable flexibility. Rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) have emerged as one of the promising energy storage devices, and polymer electrolytes with high safety, stability, and structural flexibility are the ideal choice for RMBs. Herein, a novel in situ crosslinked gel polymer electrolyte, PDTE is reported, via facile ring‐opening polymerization in RMBs. The electrolyte exhibits a remarkable room‐temperature ionic conductivity of 2.8 × 10−4 S cm−1 and highly reversible Mg plating/stripping behavior (98.9% Coulombic efficiency, 2000 cycles) with a low overpotential (<0.1 V). Mo6S8||PDTE||Mg coin cells demonstrate exceptional cycling stability and rate capability at a wide temperature range (−20 to 50 °C), characterizing an average discharge capacity of 81.6 mAh g−1 at 10 C for 7500 cycles at room temperature, and 97.4 and 111.7 mAh g−1 at 0.2 C for 400 and 50 cycles at −20 and 50 °C, respectively. The pouch cell exhibits a high energy density of 204 Wh kg−1 with a high retention of 90.6% at 0.2 C for 350 cycles, along with significantly improved safety and remarkable flexibility. Additionally, good compatibility with conversion‐type cathode Cu3Se2 validates the application versatility of PDTE. The development of this gel polymer electrolyte provides a feasible approach for the research on semi‐solid‐state electrolytes for RMBs.

Porous Spinel Magnesium Manganese Oxide/Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes Composite Synthesized by Electrochemical Conversion as High-Performance Cathode for Aqueous Magnesium Ion Battery

Abstract:Aqueous magnesium ion batteries (AMIBs) have attracted great interest due to the low manufacture cost and eco-friendliness, but the lack of suitable cathodes with good electrochemical performance obstructs their development. Here, a composite of spinel magnesium manganese oxide (MgMn 2 O 4 ) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with a porous structure is synthesized by electrochemical conversion method and used as the cathode for the AMIB, which improves the inherent low conductivity for MgMn 2 O 4 and enhanced its specific capacity. The electrochemical conversion method helps preserve the surface integrity and structure stability of the electrode, and the MWCNTs network provides the pathway of Mg ion migration among the MgMn 2 O 4 particles. The obtained MgMn 2 O 4 /MWCNTs displays a discharge capacity of 322.3 mAh g −1 at 50 mA g −1 , and the capacity retention is 81.8% after 2000 iterations at 1000 mA g −1 . Further, the MgMn 2 O 4 /MWCNTs//VO 2 system is assembled, which displays a capacity retention rate of near 100%. The electrochemical mechanism of Mg ion insertion/extraction is investigated though the ex situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements. This paper extends synthesis method of the high performance cathode material for AIMB system.

Abstract:Rechargeable magnesium battery is regarded as the promising candidate for the next generation of high-specific-energy storage systems. Nevertheless, issues related to severe Mg-Cl dissociation at the electrolyte-electrode interface impede the insertion of Mg2+ into most materials, leading to severe polarization and low utilization of Mg-storage electrodes. In this study, a metal-organic polymer (MOP) Ni-TABQ (Ni-coordinated tetramino-benzoquinone) with superior surface catalytic activity is proposed to achieve the high-capacity Mg-MOP battery. The layered Ni-TABQ cathode, featuring a unique 2D π-d linear conjugated structure, effectively reduces the dissociation energy of MgxCly clusters at the Janus interface, thereby facilitating Mg2+ insertion. Due to the high utilization of active sites, Ni-TABQ achieves high capacities of 410 mAh/g at 200 mA g-1, attributable to a four-electron redox process involving two redox centers, benzoid carbonyls, and imines. This research highlights the importance of surface electrochemical processes in rechargeable magnesium batteries and paves the way for future development in multivalent metal-ion batteries.
α-MnO2 as a cathode material for rechargeable Mg batteries

Abstract:Reversible Mg insertion and extraction behaviors of α-MnO2, a promising cathode material for rechargeable Mg batteries, were studied using discharge–charge cycling, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The α-MnO2 with a (2×2) tunnel structure as cathode shows a reversible capacity about 240mAh/g in a cell using Mg metal as anode during the 1st cycle. A reversible reduction/oxidation reaction of Mn ions during the insertion and extraction of Mg ions was clearly observed by both XPS and XAS studies. The extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) results show a partial collapse of the tunnel structure in the α-MnO2 during the Mg insertion and extraction which might be responsible for the irreversible capacity loss during the 1st cycle. These studies show that α-MnO2 is a promising candidate as cathode material for rechargeable Mg batteries if the capacity retention can be significantly improved.

Abstract:Rechargeable aqueous magnesium-ion batteries (MIBs) show great promise for low-cost, high-safety, and high-performance energy storage applications. Although manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ) is considered as a potential electrode material for aqueous MIBs, the low electrical conductivity and unsatisfactory cycling performance greatly hinder the practical application of MnO 2 electrode. To overcome these problems, herein, a novel Mg-intercalation engineering approach for MnO 2 electrode to be used in aqueous MIBs is presented, wherein the structural regulation and electrochemical performance of the Mg-intercalation MnO 2 (denoted as MMO) electrode were thoroughly investigated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations and in-situ Raman investigation. The results demonstrate that the Mg intercalation is essential to adjusting the charge/ion state and electronic band gap of MMO electrode, as well as the highly reversible phase transition of the MMO electrode during the charging-discharging process. Because of these remarkable characteristics, the MMO electrode can be capable of delivering a significant specific capacity of ∼419.8 mAh·g −1 , while exhibiting a good cycling capability over 1000 cycles in 1 M aqueous MgCl 2 electrolyte. On the basis of such MMO electrode, we have successfully developed a soft-packaging aqueous MIB with excellent electrochemical properties, revealing its huge application potential as the efficient energy storage devices.
