Abstract:We report Raman lasing and the optical analog of electromagnetically-induced-transparency (EIT) in a whispering-gallerymode (WGM) microtoroid resonator embedded in a low refractive index polymer matrix together with a tapered fiber coupler. The Raman laser supports both single and multimode operation with low power thresholds. Observations of Fano and EIT-like pheonomena in a packaged microresonator will enable high resolution sensors and can be used in networks where slow light process is needed. These results open the way for portable, robust, and stable WGM microlasers and laserbased sensors for applications in various environments.

Abstract:Due to the lack of mode selection capability, single whispering-gallery-mode（WGM） lasing is a challenge to achieve. In bottle microresonators, the highly nondegenerated WGMs are spatially well-separated along the long-axis direction and provide mode selection according to their axial mode numbers. In this work, we use a loss-engineering approach to suppress the higher-order WGMs and demonstrate single-mode lasing emission in small polymer bottle microresonators. The fiber tapers are not only used to couple pump light into the bottle microresonators to excite the WGMs but also to bring optical losses that are induced from the diameter mismatch between fiber tapers and microresonators. By adjusting the coupling positions, the diameters of fiber tapers, and the coupling angles, single fundamental-mode lasing is efficiently generated with side-mode suppression factors over 15 dB. Our loss-engineering approach is convenient just by moving the fiber taper and may findpromising applications in miniature tunable single-mode lasers and sensors.
Whispering gallery mode microlasers and refractive index sensing based on single polymer fiber

Abstract:The realization of whispering gallery mode (WGM) lasing in polymer fibers is hindered by an appropriate method to dissolve the polymer and the gain material. In this work by Van Duong Ta et al. 10.1002/lpor.201200074 , (pp. 133–139), microfibers fabricated by directly drawing from a dye doped polymer solution are exhibited as high quality microlasers and microsensors. Multimode and even single‐mode lasing is observed from the fiber under optical pumping at room temperature. The linewidth of lasing mode is narrower than 0.09 nm. The lasing mechanism is unambiguously verified by comprehensive spectroscopic analysis and ascribed to WGMs. Diameter‐ and polarization‐dependent lasing characteristics are systematically investigated, showing good agreement with the theoretical calculation. Particularly, application of the fiber laser for refractive index sensing based on resonant shift of lasing mode is demonstrated and the sensitivity up to about 300 nm/RIU is achieved. The promising potential of high quality polymer microfibers as optical sensors and multi‐function components for flexible photonic integrated systems is highly expected. Abstract:Fano resonances, sometimes behaving like electromagnetic induced transparency (EIT)-like resonances in whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microcavities are attracting much attention due to the important applications in high-sensitivity biosensing, optical switch, and slow light. In this paper, Fano resonances in several WGM systems are reported, including in a single WGM photonic microcavity and in coupled WGM microcavities. Specifically, in a single WGM microcavity system, Fano or EIT-like resonances in both polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coated silica microtoroid and bare silica microtoroid are experimentally investigated. In coupled microcavity system, we report a theoretical study of EIT-like resonance in an array of microcavities indirectly coupled through a parallel waveguides system. Finally, we experimentally investigate the Fano resonance in two microcavities indirectly coupled via a single fiber taper.

Abstract:Whispering gallery mode (WGM) microresonators have been intensively studied in many areas such as sensing, lasing, and fundamental study. WGM microresonators are always coupled by a tapered fiber, and the coupling is controlled by a 3D nanotranslation stage. We always suffer from the instability of coupling condition, which means it is difficult to put microresonators in practical applications. Hence, we present an efficient way to package on-chip ultrahigh-Q microresonators. Stimulated Raman Scattering is achieved in this packaged microresonator, which means we have a portable, narrow linewidth laser and it can be used to expand the working wavelength of a laser. Abstract:Waveguide-coupled optical resonators have played an important role in a wide range of applications including optical communication, sensing, nonlinear optics, slow/fast light, and cavity QED. In such a system, the coupling regimes strongly affect the resonance feature in the light transmission spectra, and hence the performance and outcomes of the applications. Therefore it is crucial to control the coupling between the waveguide and the microresonator. In this work, we investigated a fiber-taper coupled whispering-gallery-mode microresonator system, in which the coupling regime is traditionally controlled by adjusting the distance between the resonator and the fiber-taper mechanically. We propose and experimentally demonstrate that by utilizing Raman gain one can achieve on-demand control of the coupling regime without any mechanical movement in the resonator system. Particularly, the application of Raman gain is accompanied by Q enhancement. We also show that with the help of Raman gain control, the transitions between various coupling regimes can affect the light transmission spectra so as to provide better resolvability and signal amplification. This all-optical approach is also suitable for monolithically integrated and packaged waveguide-resonator systems, whose coupling regime is fixed at the time of manufacturing. It provides an effective route to control the light transmission in a waveguide-couple resonator system without mechanically moving individual optical components.

Abstract:Nicotinic acid (niacin) has been widely used as a favorable lipid-lowering drug for several decades, and the orphan G protein-coupled receptor GPR109A has been identified to be a receptor for niacin. Mechanistic investigations have shown that as a Gi-coupled receptor, GPR109A inhibits adenylate cyclase activity upon niacin activation, thereby inhibiting free fatty acid liberation. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms that regulate signaling and internalization of GPR109A remain largely unknown. To further characterize GPR109A internalization, we made a construct to express GPR109A fused with enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) at its carboxyl-terminal end. In stable GPR109A-EGFP-expressing HEK-293 cells, GPR109A-EGFP was mainly localized at the plasma membrane and was rapidly internalized in a dose- and time-dependent manner upon agonist stimulation. GPR109A internalization was completely blocked by hypertonic sucrose, indicating that GPR109A internalizes via the clathrin-coated pit pathway. Further investigation demonstrated that internalized GPR109A was recycled to the cell surface after the removal of agonist, and recycling of the internalized receptors was not blocked by treatment with acidotropic agents, NH4Cl and monensin. Pertussis toxin pretreatment not only inhibited forskolin-induced cAMP accumulation and intracellular Ca2+ mobilization; it also significantly attenuated agonist-promoted GPR109A internalization. Moreover, RNA interference experiments showed that knockdown of GRK2 (G protein-coupled receptor kinase 2) and arrestin3 expression significantly impaired receptor internalization. Taken together, these results indicate that the agonist-induced internalization of GPR109A receptors is regulated by GRK2 and arrestin3 in a pertussis toxin-sensitive manner and that internalized receptor recycling is independent of endosomal acidification.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a novel method for rapidly fabricating polymeric optical whispering-gallery mode (WGM) resonators. A 3D micro-printing technology based on high-power UV light source and high-speed optical spatial modulator (SLM) is developed, and the fabrication and testing of suspended-toroid WGM resonator array are demonstrated in the experiments. The experimental results reveal that the demonstrated method is very flexible and time-saving to quickly fabricate complex WGM resonators.

Abstract:We study both experimentally and theoretically the coupling between a fiber taper and two whispering-gallery modes, which are simultaneously excited in a single pilydimethyl-siloxane-coated silica microtoroid system. The transmission spectrum of the fiber-coupled two-mode microresonator shows a sharp electromagnetically induced transparency-like window within the resonant absorption region. This line shape results from destructive interference between two optical pathways associated with two distinct coexisting modes in a single resonator. The sharp transparency peak has great potential applications in light modulation and highly sensitive biochemical sensors.

Abstract:Recently optical whispering-gallery-mode resonators (WGMRs) have emerged as promising platforms to achieve label-free detection of nanoscale objects and to reach single molecule sensitivity. The ultimate detection performance of WGMRs are limited by energy dissipation in the material they are fabricated from. Up to date, to improve detection limit, either rare-earth ions are doped into the WGMR to compensate losses or plasmonic resonances are exploited for their superior field confinement. Here, we demonstrate, for the first time, enhanced detection of single-nanoparticle induced mode-splitting in a silica WGMR via Raman-gain assisted loss-compensation and WGM Raman lasing. Notably, we detected and counted individual dielectric nanoparticles down to a record low radius of 10 nm by monitoring a beatnote signal generated when split Raman lasing lines are heterodyne-mixed at a photodetector. This dopant-free scheme retains the inherited biocompatibility of silica, and could find widespread use for sensing in biological media. It also opens the possibility of using intrinsic Raman or parametric gain in other systems, where dissipation hinders the progress of the field and limits applications.

Abstract:Based on the high demand for all optical control and all optical switches in optical communication network, the Raman gain induced resonance control of whispering-gallery-mode optical micro-cavities was investigated theoretically and experimentally. Theoretical analysis shows that Raman gain can compensate cavity loss and change the coupling regime of micro-cavities system. As a result on-resonance transmission in the micro-cavities system can be controlled without any mechanical movement. In experiment fiber taper coupled silica micro-toroid system was studied. Raman gain was pumped with an ultra-low pump power of 560μW, with this Raman gain the fiber taper coupled micro-cavity system was turned from deep under coupling regime to critical coupling regime and the on-resonance transmission of the 1545.7 nm signal light was turned down by 13.5 dB.

Abstract:We encapsulated a high-quality (Q) factor optical whispering gallery mode (WGM) microtoroid resonator together with its side coupled fiber taper inside a low refractive index polymer, achieving a final Q higher than 10^7. Packaging provides stable resonator-fiber taper coupling, long-term maintenance of high-Q, a protective layer against contaminants, and portability to microtoroid resonator based devices. We tested the robustness of the packaged device under various conditions and demonstrated its capability for thermal sensing.

Abstract:We have reported the high- Q whispering gallery modes (WGMs) in a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) optical microresonators with broad tuning range. The PDMS microresonators are fabricated at the center of two collimating fiber tips, which can be controlled by the piezoelectric stage. Through stretching the fiber stem, the tuning range of WGMs are demonstrated more than 50 nm. Further investigations demonstrated that the WGM shift has a high force sensitivity (~ 19.7 pm/μN) of the gravitation when the microcavity is stretched by a weight. The theoretical analysis reveals that the high force sensitivity of polymer microresonator can be used for the weak force or height measurement.

Abstract:An all-pass microring-Bragg gratings (APMR-BG) based coupling resonant system is proposed and experimentally demonstrated to generate electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT)-like transmission for the first time. The coupling between two light path ways in the micro-ring resonator and the Fabry-Pérot (F-P) resonator formed by two sections of Bragg gratings gives rise to the EIT-like spectrum. This system has the advantage of a small footprint consisting of only one microring resonator and one bus waveguide with Bragg gratings. It also has a large fabrication tolerance as the overlap requirement between the resonance wavelengths of the microring and the F-P resonator is more relaxed. The two most important properties of the EIT-like transmission namely the insertion loss (IL) and the full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM) have been analytically investigated by utilizing the specially developed model based on the transfer matrix method. The APMR-BG based coupling resonant system was fabricated on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. The EIT-like transmission with an extinction ratio (ER) of 12 dB, a FWHM of 0.077 nm and a quality factor (Q factor) of 20200 was achieved, which agree well with the simulated results based on our numerical model. A slow light with a group delay of 38 ps was also obtained.

Abstract:Primary hyperparathyroidism was studied in a well-defined geriatric population of 1129 individuals during a three-month interval. Primary hyperparathyroidism was diagnosed in 1.5%. The diagnosis was based on a morphologic and biochemic basis. From clinical material consisting of 400 patients treated surgically for primary hyperparathyroidism during a ten-year period, 158 patients (38%) above the age of 64 were studied. At the preoperative evaluation, neuromuscular symptoms were present in 80%, renal insufficiency and kidney stones in each 16%, constipation and/or anorexia in 38%. Ten per cent were considered asymptomatic. In 80% the primary hyperparathyroidism was caused by a solitary adenoma. Ninety-four per cent became normocalcemic following the operation. Consistent hypocalcemia requiring vitamin-D treatment occurred in 3%, and 2% had a persisting hypercalcemia or later recurrence. The therapeutic effect on the neuromuscular symptoms, constipation, anorexia, and renal stone formation was considered good or fair in most of the cases. Primary hyperparathyroidism in the elderly occurs with a high prevalence. It can be treated successfully by surgical therapy with a low cost of morbidity, mortality, and medical care.

Abstract:Microlasers have experienced tremendous development in the past decade and become an essential part in laser evolution, as miniature lasers provide strong optical confinement and feature greatly enhanced light–matter interactions. Among all the configurations, whispering gallery mode (WGM) microcavities and microlasers exhibit outstanding optical performances with high quality factors and small mode volumes, thus ensuring low lasing thresholds. In addition, some unique properties inherent to WGM cavities, like bi‐directional propagation and an evanescent field that spans several hundred nanometers across the boundary, can be exploited for novel applications. Therefore, designing and engineering innovative WGM microcavities and microlasers has attracted increasing research interest. The fundamentals and characteristics of WGM are introduced here, and then the developments and current status of WGM microcavities and microlasers are reviewed in terms of the evolution of fabrication techniques and built‐up materials. In particular, the melting of glassy materials in early studies, top‐down and bottom‐up approaches with semiconductors, coating structures, as well as flexible, soft microresonators in recent years are presented. Finally, the application prospects of microlasers including the wavelength manipulation, sensing and microresonator coupling, are discussed. Whispering gallery mode (WGM) microcavities and microlasers exhibit outstanding optical performances with high quality factors and small mode volumes, which ensure low lasing thresholds. The WGM fundamentals and advances in the fabrication methodologies, as well as the application prospects including wavelength modulation, sensitive biological and chemical sensors, and coupling mechanisms are presented.

Abstract:In this study, we experimentally and theoretically demonstrate electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT)-like in a single conical microresonator (CMR) fabricated by combining arc discharge and pull method. Benefited from the gradually changing diameter along the longitudinal axis of the CMR, the resonance frequency can be tuned when the CMR coupled by a tapered fiber waveguide. The characteristic of internally-tuning in our CMR is confirmed theoretically, numerically and experimentally. In particular, Fano and EIT-like effect with a quality (Q) factor are achieved by scanning the varied diameter carefully originating from approximate two resonant frequencies in a wavelength apart. In addition, these experimental observations can be well fitted with the coupled mode theory. These findings may open new avenues for realizing high-Q EIT, which pave the way for an enhanced approach in bio-sensing applications, nonlinear optics and optical switching devices.

Abstract:The resonant response of the hollow microcapillary resonator (HMCR) assembled with liquid-metal core edge-coupled with microfiber coupler (MFC) was theoretically and experimentally investigated. Primarily, for the first time, the analogy electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) phenomenon and Fano resonance was proposed and discovered in this coupling system. Different from the traditional method, the discrepancy in temperature characteristics of waveguide super-mode and whispering gallery mode (WGM) leads to the evolution of EIT and Fano resonances. This feature has great application value for fiber optic sensors, filters, and switches due to its sharp and asymmetric lineshape. Secondly, the temperature response characteristics were improved by assembling a liquid metal core inside the HMCR. Benefitting from the high thermal expansion-coefficient material, this solution reduces externally imposed energy consumption during the tuning process. In addition to all that, to realize the multi-parameter tuning characteristics, a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) unit was constructed to perform strain tuning. This research has significant implications for sensor measurement, optical filters, optical switches, and optical modulators.
