Abstract:Objective To explore the molecular epidemiological characteristics of norovirus isolated from the patients with acute gastroenteritis in Zhejiang province during 2016.Methods The stool samples and clinical data of 1 308 patients with acute gastroenteritis were collected from January to December in 2016.The type Ⅰ and Ⅱ of norovirus in stool samples were detected by one-step double real-time RT-PCR.Some of the positive specimens were selected by stratified sampling and amplified by conventional RT-PCR,and the PCR products were sequenced for genotype identification and phylogenetic analysis.Results Among the samples studied the positive rate of norovirus was 10.55％ (138/1 308) in which 12 cases were GⅠ genotype,118 cases were G Ⅱ genotype and 8 cases were mixed infection of G Ⅰ/G Ⅱ genotypes.The positive rate of norovirus in different age groups decreased with the increased age of patients,and became the lowest in the patient group of more than or equal to 60 years old.There was no significant difference for the positive rates of norovirus in different genders.Norovirus infection was distributed throughout all the year with the peak value of positive rate (37.50％) in December.The sequence analysis demonstrated that G Ⅱ.4 and G Ⅱ.17 genotypes were the prevalent strains of G Ⅱ genotypes with proportions of 40.91％ (18/44) and 34.09％ (15/44),while GⅠ.6 genotype was the prevalent strain of GⅠ genotypes.Conclusion Norovirus should be the important pathogen causing acute gastroenteritis in Zhejiang province during 2016.G Ⅱ.4 and G Ⅱ.17 of norovirus may be the predominant epidemic genotypes.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate the epidemiology characteristics of norovirus among diarrheal outpatients in China.METHODS:Diarrhea cases were monitored at emergency/outpatient departments at 173 hospitals in 27 provinces of China, with clinical and epidemiological data, and fecal specimens collected and sent to 58 network-laboratories to detect norovirus by RT-PCR method, and to analyze the positive rate of norovirus in various regions, population and time during 2009-2013.RESULTS:11.6% of the 34 031 diarrheal cases under surveillance were found with norovirus. Age group of 6-23 month-old children and that of people over 45 years old were found with the highest positive percentage, 13.7% and 12.4% respectively. Positive percentage of norovirus peaks in autumn and winter in a year; it peaks in mid-temperate zones (10.7%) and warm-temperate zones (11.6%) in winter. It peaks in sub-tropical zones in autumn (14.3%). The most prevalent genogroups detected were norovirus G II, accounting for 89.9% of identified strains.CONCLUSION:Norovirus affects all ages and was most prevalent in children and the elderly among diarrhea outpatients. Norovirus' positive percentage showed strong seasonal pattern, and peaks at different times of a year in different climate zones of China. Since no effective preventive measures existed, further study on norovirus epidemiology and intervention strategies should be conducted in future.

Abstract:Background: Noroviruses are a leading cause of acute gastroenteritis (AGE) worldwide. The geographical characteristics of norovirus outbreaks in Beijing and their influencing factors remain unknown. This study aimed to explore the spatial distributions, geographical characteristics, and influencing factors of norovirus outbreaks in Beijing, China. Methods: Epidemiological data and specimens were collected through the AGE outbreak surveillance system in all 16 districts of Beijing. Data on spatial distribution, geographical characteristics, and influencing factors of norovirus outbreaks were analyzed using descriptive statistics methods. We measured spatial, geographical clustering of high- or low-value deviance from random distribution using Z-scores and P-values as statistical significance measures with Global Moran's I statistics and Getis-Ord Gi in ArcGIS. Linear regression and correlation methods were used to explore influencing factors. Results: Between September 2016 and August 2020, 1,193 norovirus outbreaks were laboratory-confirmed. The number of outbreaks varied seasonally, typically peaking in spring (March to May) or winter (October to December). Outbreaks primarily occurred around central districts at the town level, and spatial autocorrelation was evident in both the entire study period and in individual years. Hotspots of norovirus outbreaks in Beijing were primarily found in contiguous areas between three central districts (Chaoyang, Haidian, Fengtai) and four suburban districts (Changping, Daxing, Fangshan, Tongzhou). The average population numbers, mean number of all schools, and mean number of kindergartens and primary schools for towns in central districts and hotspot areas were higher than those in suburban districts and non-hotspot areas respectively. Additionally, population numbers and densities of kindergartens and primary schools were influencing factors at the town level. Conclusions: Hotspots of norovirus outbreaks in Beijing were in contiguous areas between central and suburban districts with high populations, and high kindergarten and primary school densities were the likely driving forces. Outbreak surveillance needs to focus on contiguous areas between central and suburban districts with increased monitoring, medical resources, and health education.

Abstract:We conducted a retrospective analysis of norovirus outbreaks reported to the National Public Health Emergency Event Surveillance System (PHEESS) in China from January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2017. We reviewed all acute gastroenteritis outbreaks (n = 692) submitted to PHEESS to identify the frequency, seasonality, geographic distribution, setting, and transmission mode of outbreaks due to norovirus. A total of 616 norovirus outbreaks resulting in 30,848 cases were reported. Among these outbreaks, 571 (93%) occurred in school settings including 239 (39%) in primary schools, 136 (22%) in childcare facilities, and 121 (20%) in secondary schools. The majority of outbreaks (63%) were due to person-to-person transmission, followed by multiple modes of transmission (11%), foodborne (5%) and waterborne (3%) transmission. These findings highlight the importance of improving hand hygiene and environmental disinfection in high-risk settings. Developing a standard and quantitative outbreak reporting structure could improve the usefulness of PHEESS for monitoring norovirus outbreaks.

Abstract:To understand epidemiological characteristics of norovirus outbreaks in China from 2000 to 2018 the literature on norovirus outbreaks was identified by searching WANFANG, CNKI, PubMed, and Web of Science databases before 31 December 2018. Statistical analyses were performed using Statistical Product Service Solutions software. RStudio1.4.1717 and ArcGIS trial version were used for plotting bar graphs and maps. A total of 419 norovirus outbreaks were reported in the 394 included articles, which occurred between June 2000 and October 2018, showing an overall increasing trend. The majority of outbreaks occurred in schools (52.28%, 218/417) and kindergartens (55/417, 13.19%). Person‐to‐person transmission (41.64%, 137/329) was most common, followed by food‐borne transmission (75/329, 22.80%) and water‐borne transmission (72/329, 21.88%). GII was the most predominant norovirus genogroup, with GII.4, GII.17 and GII.2 being the dominant genotypes in 2007–2013, 2014–2015, 2016–2017, respectively. Increased outbreaks were associated with the prevalence of new variants. Most norovirus outbreaks were reported in the southeast of the country. The number of norovirus outbreaks was positively associated with the per capita gross domestic product and the year‐end resident population. Norovirus outbreaks have become an important public health problem in China. It is necessary to establish surveillance in hospitals and nursing homes. Genotyping of noroviruses is important for monitoring the circulating strains and improving the vaccine design, so it should be carried out in more regions.

Abstract:Anthranilate hydroxylase from Aspergillus niger catalyzes the oxidative deamination and dihydroxylation of anthranilic acid to 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic acid. This enzyme has been purified to homogeneity and has a molecular weight of 89,000. The enzyme is composed of two subunits of 42,000 with 2 gram-atoms of nonheme iron per mol. Fe2+-chelators like alpha,alpha'-dipyridyl and o-phenanthroline are potent inhibitors of the enzyme activity. Absorption and fluorescence spectra of the enzyme offer no evidence for the presence of other cofactors like flavin. Flavins and flavin-specific inhibitors like atebrin have no effect on the activity of the enzyme. The enzyme incorporates one atom of oxygen each from 18O2 and H218O into the product 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic acid. Based on these studies, it is concluded that anthranilate hydroxylase from A. niger is a new type of NADPH-linked nonheme iron monooxygenase.
Epidemiologic Features and Influencing Factors of Norovirus Outbreaks in the City of Wuxi, China from 2014 to 2018

Abstract:ABSTRACT. The study investigated the genotypic changes and epidemiologic features of norovirus outbreaks and factors influencing the attack rate and outbreak duration in Wuxi from 2014 to 2018. Norovirus outbreaks, monitored through surveillance system, were investigated. The norovirus-positive specimens from outbreaks were collected and genotyped using a dual polymerase-capsid genotyping protocol based on a one-step polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplicon. The genotypes were analyzed by Norovirus Typing Tool Version 2.0. A total of 74 norovirus outbreaks were reported in Wuxi from 2014 to 2018. Most (93.2%) norovirus outbreaks were caused by GII genotypes. The predominant norovirus genotypes in outbreaks have changed from GII.17 (20.3%) in 2014–2015 to GII.P16/GII.2 (40.5%) in 2017–2018. GII.P16/GII.2 in 2017–2018 season were more prevalent than GII.17 in 2014–2015 season (χ 2 = 4.741, P = 0.029). 56.7% of the outbreaks occurred in primary schools. The re-outbreak rate was 16.2%. 66.7% of re-outbreaks were caused by norovirus variants different from previous genotypes. Outbreaks in nonprimary school settings (odds ratio [OR]: 4.007; 95% CI: 1.247–12.876) and those leading to temporary school or institution closure (OR: 20.510; 95% CI: 1.806–232.937) were reported with a higher attack rate. The outbreaks in primary schools (OR: 4.248; 95% CI: 1.211–14.903), re-outbreaks (OR: 6.433; 95% CI: 1.103–37.534) and longer report timing (OR: 8.380; 95% CI: 2.259–31.089) declared a significantly longer duration. It is of great importance that the monitoring of norovirus outbreaks for the emergence of novel strains, along with responsive prevention and control intervention should be strengthened in adults and school-age population, especially in primary students and preschool children.

Abstract:Background: Norovirus is the predominant pathogen causing foodborne illnesses and acute gastroenteritis (AGE) outbreaks worldwide, imposing a significant disease burden. This study aimed to investigate the epidemiological characteristics and genotypic diversity of norovirus outbreaks in Hongshan District, Wuhan City. Methods: A total of 463 AGE cases from 39 AGE-related outbreaks in Hongshan District between January 1, 2021, and June 30, 2023, were included in the study. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was used to identify norovirus types GI and GII in anal swab samples from all cases. Norovirus-positive samples were sequenced and analyzed for the open reading frame (ORF) 1/ORF2 hinge region. Results: 26 norovirus infectious outbreaks were reported among 39 acute diarrheal outbreaks, including 14 outbreaks in kindergartens, 8 in elementary schools, and 4 in universities. Based on clinical symptoms and epidemiological investigations, a total of 1295 individuals were identified as having been exposed to norovirus, yielding an attack rate of 35.75 %. A higher proportion of outbreaks was observed during the winter and spring seasons (38.46 %). Additionally, norovirus-positive samples were subjected to sequencing and analysis of the open reading frame (ORF) 1/ORF2 hinge region. Genotypic data for norovirus was successfully obtained from 18 (69.23 %) of the infectious outbreaks, revealing 10 distinct recombinant genotypes. GII.4 Sydney 2012 [P31] and GII.17[P17] were the predominant strains in 2021 and 2022, GII.3 [P12] emerged as the dominant strain in 2023. Conclusion: Norovirus outbreaks in Hongshan District predominantly occurred in crowded educational institutions, with peaks in the cold season and a high attack rate in universities. GII.3 [P12] has become the locally predominant strain.

Abstract:Norovirus is one of the leading causes of acute gastroenteritis outbreaks worldwide. This study aimed to identify the epidemiological characteristics of norovirus outbreaks and to provide evidence for public health entities. Specimens and epidemiological survey data were collected to determine if there were differences in the attack rate of norovirus in terms of the year, season, transmission route, exposure setting, and region and to determine whether there were relationships between the reporting interval, the number of illnesses in a single outbreak and the duration of the outbreak. Norovirus outbreaks were reported throughout the year, with seasonal characteristics (i.e., high rates in spring and winter). Among all regions in Shenyang with the exception of Huanggu and Liaozhong, norovirus outbreaks had been reported, and the primary genotype was GII.2[P16]. Vomiting was the most common symptom. The main places of occurrence were childcare institutions and schools. The person-to-person route was the main transmission route. The median duration of norovirus was 3 days (IQR [interquartile range]: 2-6 days), the median reporting interval was 2 days (IQR: 1-4 days), the median number of illnesses in a single outbreak was 16 (IQR: 10-25); there was a positive correlation between these parameters. Norovirus surveillance and genotyping studies still need to be further strengthened to increase knowledge regarding the pathogens and their variant characteristics, to better characterize the patterns of norovirus outbreaks and to provide information for outbreak prevention. Norovirus outbreaks should be detected, reported and handled early. Public health entities and the government should develop corresponding measures for different seasons, transmission routes, exposure settings, and regions.
Epidemiological features of norovirus outbreak in Xicheng District of Beijing, 2013 -2016

Abstract:Objective To understand the epidemiological characteristics of norovirus outbreaks in Xicheng District of Beijing from 2013 to 2016. Methods The field epidemiological survey method was used to investigate the epidemic situation of norovirus infection and the samples were collected from cases and close contacts to detect the virus. Results A total of 15norovirus outbreaks in Xicheng District of Beijing occurred between 2013 and 2016 involving 8 - 37 cases every time and attack rates ranging from 13.7％ to 53.3％. The median duration of aggregation epidemic was 3 days. The norovirus outbreaks increased every year from 2013 to 2016, and the peak seasons appeared in winter and spring.10 events occurred during December to April, accounting for 66.7％, and 10 events occurred in primary schools (66.7％). A total of 188 specimens were collected and tested with the total positive rate of 50.8％ and the positive rate of cases of 80.8％. All the events investigated were caused by norovirus Ⅱ except one which was caused by norovirus Ⅰ. Conclusion Outbreak of norovirus usually occurs during winter and spring in Xicheng District, 2013 - 2016. It is the primary school that should be the focus of surveillance. Monitoring efforts and report work for norovirus infection should be strengthened, and the health monitoring of the canteen staff or stealth infection should also be enhanced.

Abstract:Objective: To analyze the influencing factors of acute gastroenteritis outbreaks caused by norovirus in Beijing from 2014 to 2018. Methods: Data of acute gastroenteritis events caused by norovirus in Beijing from April 2014 to March 2018 were collected. Unconditional logistic regression model was conducted to identify the risk factors of the outbreaks. Results: A total of 765 acute gastroenteritis epidemics caused by norovirus were reported in Beijing, in which 85.88% (657/765) were cluster events and 14.12% (108/765) were outbreaks. Among the outbreaks, 70.37% (76/108) were reported in 2017; 84.26% (91/108) were reported in winter and spring; 88.89% (96/108) were reported in kindergartens, primary or secondary schools; 81.48% (88/108) were through person-to-person transmission; 93.52% (101/108) were caused by norovirus GⅡ infection. The risk of outbreaks in suburban and out suburb area were 1.84 times (95%CI: 1.13-3.02) and 3.78 times (95%CI: 1.62-8.82) as high as that in urban area, respectively. The risks of outbreaks in primary, secondary schools and other institutions were 6.26 times (95%CI: 3.53-11.10), 14.98 times (95%CI: 6.23-36.01) and 8.71 times (95%CI: 3.07-24.71) as high as that in kindergartens, respectively. The risk of outbreak in which patients having lower hospital visiting rate than the median rate of all events was 2.29 times than that in the context of having higher hospital visiting rate (95%CI:1.42-3.68). The risk of foodborne outbreak was 14.55 times as high as that transmitted through person-to-person (95%CI: 3.15-67.07). Conclusion: Measures such as strengthening the prevention and control of norovirus outbreaks in suburbs, primary schools, secondary schools and other institutions, promoting patients to visit the hospital actively, improving the management of foodborne events and kitchen workers should be taken to reduce the incidence of acute gastroenteritis outbreaks caused by norovirus.

Abstract:We conducted' sentinel-based surveillance for norovirus in the Pudong area of Shanghai, China, during 2012-2013, by analyzing 5,324 community surveys, 408,024 medical records, and 771 laboratory-confirmed norovirus infections among 3,877 diarrhea cases. Our analysis indicated an outpatient incidence of 1.5/100 person-years and a community incidence of 8.9/100 person-years for norovirus-associated diarrhea.

Abstract:Objective To understand the epidemiologic and etiological characteristics of norovirus outbreaks in Dongcheng District of Beijing,2013-2015.Methods The norovirus outbreaks in Dongcheng District of Beijing from January 2013 to December 2015 were investigated by face to face investigation,and were analyzed by descriptive study.Specimens of patients and environmental swabs were collected and tested by real-time PCR and nucleotide sequence analysis.The etiology of outbreaks was studied.Results A total of 20 norovirus outbreaks were reported during 2013-2015,involving 8-78 cases and the attack rate was 6.3％-61.5％.The norovirus outbreaks in Dongcheng District of Beijing,2013-2015 were increase every year.There were 17 outbreaks occurred during March-April and October-December,accounting for 85.0％ of all outbreaks.The outbreaks occurred in primary school,pre-school,collective unit and hospitalized patients.A total of 260 specimens were collected and tested,including stools of patients and close contacts as well as environmental swabs.One-hundred and twenty-two samples were positive for norovirus GⅡ(46.9％).The results of virus nucleotide sequence analysis were norovirus GⅡ.17(6 outbreaks),GⅡ.6(3 outbreaks),GⅡ.4 Sydney_2012(2 outbreaks),GⅡ.2 (1 outbreaks),GⅡ.3 (1 outbreaks) and GⅡ.7 (1 outbreaks).Conclusions Norovirus outbreaks in Dongcheng District were frequent during spring and autumn-winter time from 2013 to 2015.The surveillance for norovirus infection should be strengthened in primary school and pre-school.as.The health monitoring of the canteen staff or care worker should also be enhanced.

Abstract:Objective: To describe the epidemiological characteristics of norovirus outbreaks in Jiangsu Province, utilize the total attack rate ( TAR ) and transmissibility ( R unc ) as the measurement indicators of the outbreak, and a statistical difference in risk factors associated with TAR and transmissibility was compared. Ultimately, this study aimed to provide scientific suggestions to develop the most appropriate prevention and control measures. Method: We collected epidemiological data from investigation reports of all norovirus outbreaks in Jiangsu Province from 2012 to 2018 and performed epidemiological descriptions, sequenced the genes of the positive specimens collected that were eligible for sequencing, created a database and calculated the TAR , constructed SEIAR and SEIARW transmission dynamic models to calculate R unc , and performed statistical analyses of risk factors associated with the TAR and R unc . Results: We collected a total of 206 reported outbreaks, of which 145 could be used to calculate transmissibility. The mean TAR in was 2.6% and the mean R unc was 12.2. The epidemiological characteristics of norovirus outbreaks showed an overall increasing trend in the number of norovirus outbreaks from 2012 to 2018; more outbreaks in southern Jiangsu than northern Jiangsu; more outbreaks in urban areas than in rural areas; outbreaks occurred mostly in autumn and winter. Most of the sites where outbreaks occurred were schools, especially primary schools. Interpersonal transmission accounted for the majority. Analysis of the genotypes of noroviruses revealed that the major genotypes of the viruses changed every 3 years, with the GII.2 [P16] type of norovirus dominating from 2016 to 2018. Statistical analysis of TAR associated with risk factors found statistical differences in all risk factors, including time (year, month, season), location (geographic location, type of settlement, type of premises), population (total number of susceptible people at the outbreak site), transmission route, and genotype ( P < 0.05). Statistical analysis of transmissibility associated with risk factors revealed that only transmissibility was statistically different between sites. Conclusions: The number of norovirus outbreaks in Jiangsu Province continues to increase during the follow-up period. Our findings highlight the impact of different factors on norovirus outbreaks and identify the key points of prevention and control in Jiangsu Province.

Abstract:Objective To analyze the epidemiological characteristics and influencing factors of epidemics caused by norovirus infectionsin Dongcheng district of Beijing from 2013 to 2018.Methods Epidemiological investigation data and laboratory test results of acute gastroenteritis epidemics caused by norovirus in Dongcheng district of Beijing from 2013 to 2018 were collected.The descriptive epidemiological method was used to describe the epidemiological characteristics of epidemics.The epidemics were devided into two groups according to the threshold of an outbreak to explore the influencing factors.Results A total of 72 norovirus acute gastroenteritis epidemics were reported with 1 458 cases.The viruses were mainly in group G Ⅱ.The epidemics were more frequent in spring and autumn and mainly occurred in schools and kindergartens.The differences of incidence rates in different places were statistically significant (x2=163.06,P＜0.01).Compared with kindergartens,the epidemics in schools were more likely to spread to more than one class (x2=4.11,P=0.043).The ages of patients were mainly 3-12 years old.Non-regional health department reporting,over 2 days of time interval between disease onset and reporting of the first case,non-zoning of cleaning tools and foodborne transmission were more likely to have outbreaks.Conclusion The epidemics of norovirus acute gastroenteritis mainly occured in schools and kindergartens.Implementing prevention and control measures in the early stage of the high incidence season is the key to the early disposal of the epidemics and to avoid the spread of the disease.

Abstract:<h3>Objectives</h3><p>Noroviruses are a leading cause of acute gastroenteritis (AGE) outbreaks worldwide. This study examined the epidemiology and genetic characteristics of norovirus outbreaks in Beijing, China.</p><h3>Methods</h3><p>Epidemiological data and fecal specimens were collected through the AGE outbreak surveillance system in Beijing. GI and GII genogroup noroviruses were detected and genotyped. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics.</p><h3>Results</h3><p>Between September 2014 and August 2017, 762 AGE outbreaks were reported in Beijing, of which 661 (86.7%) were laboratory-confirmed as norovirus. Most norovirus outbreaks were reported during the spring (66.9%, 442/661), occurred in kindergartens and elementary schools (92.3%, 610/661), and were caused by GII genogroup noroviruses (95.6%; 632/661). The genotypes of the norovirus strains were determined in 468 outbreaks, and GII.P16-GII.2 and GII.P17-GII.17 strains were the most commonly identified. GII.P17-GII.17 and GII.P16-GII.2 strains predominated in 2014–2015 and 2016–2017 outbreaks, respectively. GII.P16-GII.2 noroviruses were responsible for a steep increase in AGE outbreaks in Beijing: 549 norovirus outbreaks were reported from 2016 to 2017, 9.2 times the number that occurred during the previous year.</p><h3>Conclusions</h3><p>Norovirus causes a large disease burden in Beijing, and the prevalence of non-GII.4 noroviruses presents a new challenge for the development of vaccines.</p>

Abstract:CaliciNet China, a network of provincial, county, and city laboratories coordinated by the Chinese Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, was launched in October 2016 to monitor the epidemiology and genotype distribution of norovirus outbreaks in China. During October 2016-September 2018, a total of 556 norovirus outbreaks were reported, and positive fecal samples from 470 (84.5%) outbreaks were genotyped. Most of these outbreaks were associated with person-to-person transmission (95.1%), occurred in childcare centers or schools (78.2%), and were reported during November-March of each year (63.5%). During the 2-year study period, 81.2% of all norovirus outbreaks were typed as GII.2[P16]. In China, most norovirus outbreaks are reported by childcare centers or schools; GII.2[P16] is the predominant genotype. Ongoing surveillance by CaliciNet China will provide information about the evolving norovirus genotype distribution and outbreak characteristics important for the development of effective interventions, including vaccines.

Norovirus outbreaks mainly occur in schools and kindergartens in China, always causing public health issues. What is added by this report?: Conditional logistic regression method was used to analyze the risk factors for norovirus outbreaks in schools and kindergartens, and found that students vomiting at school or kindergarten, case activity in public areas, and the first case's classroom less than 5 meters from toilets were risk factors. What are the implications for public health practice?: Effective measures to address these factors can help reduce the risk of norovirus outbreaks in schools and kindergartens.

Abstract:<h2 class="section-title u-h3 u-margin-l-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Summary</h2><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Objectives</h3><p>Norovirus is associated with one-fifth of all gastroenteritis cases, but basic epidemiological data is lacking, especially in developing countries. As long-term surveillance on norovirus gastroenteritis is scarce in western China, this study aims to update the epidemiological knowledge of norovirus gastroenteritis and to characterize the genotypes of norovirus strains.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Methods</h3><p>Stool samples were collected from hospitalized children under 5 years old with gastroenteritis in Chengdu, China. All samples were tested for norovirus as well as rotavirus, sapovirus, enteric adenovirus, and astrovirus by real-time RT-PCR. RdRp and VP1 genes were sequenced in norovirus-positive samples to investigate viral phylogenies.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Results</h3><p>Of the 1,181 samples collected from 2015–2019, 242 (20.5%) were positive for norovirus.</p><p>Among norovirus-positive cases, 65 cases had co-infection with another virus; norovirus/enteric adenovirus was most frequently detected (50.8%, 33/65). The highest positive rate was observed in children aged 13–18 months (23.7%, 68/287). Norovirus infection peaked in autumn (36.6%, 91/249), followed by summer (20.3%, 70/345). Pearson correlation analysis showed significant correlation between the norovirus-positive rate and humidity (<em>r</em> = 0.773, <em>P</em> < 0.05). GII.4 Sydney 2012 [P31] (48.5%, 79/163) and GII.3 [P12] (35.6%, 58/163) were the dominant norovirus strains.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Conclusions</h3><p>Norovirus has become one of the most common causes of viral gastroenteritis in children under 5 years old in western China. Continuous monitoring is imperative for predicting the emergence of new epidemic strains and for current vaccine development.</p>
