Abstract:Introduction Smoking is a major contributor to health inequalities in the UK. The ENHANCE-D trial is evaluating three smoking cessation interventions (nicotine replacement therapy [NRT], electronic cigarettes [ECs] or 'very brief advice') delivered in NHS primary dental care. This qualitative study aimed to provide insight into the factors that could influence the adoption of the interventions in these settings.Methods Interviews were conducted at two timepoints. Purposive maximum variation sampling was used to recruit and interview a total of 24 dental patients, 12 dental professionals and three NHS dental commissioners. Thematic analysis was carried out using normalisation process theory as an analytical framework.Results Dental settings were perceived as an appropriate location to deliver smoking cessation interventions. Patients had several motivating and demotivating factors regarding use of NRTs or ECs; they often had negative preconceptions. Financial considerations were major influencers for both patients and dental teams. The time pressures for dental practices were identified as a major barrier. Some practical issues, such as procurement and stock supply, would need to be considered if the ENHANCE-D interventions were to be implemented in routine practice.Conclusion Primary dental care teams are well-placed to deliver smoking cessation interventions. However, a number of facilitators and deterrents have been identified and strategic changes are needed for successful implementation.
Increasing digital equity to promote online smoking cessation program engagement among rural adults: a randomized controlled pilot trial

Abstract:Background: Cigarette smoking prevalence is higher for rural than urban adults, yet digital access to cessation programming is reduced. We aim to investigate digital access interventions to promote engagement with an online evidence-based cessation treatment (EBCT) program among rural adults. Methods: This pilot trial used a pragmatic, three-arm, randomized, parallel-group design (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT05209451). Inclusion criteria included being aged ≥18, Mayo Clinic Midwest patient, rural residency, and currently smokes cigarettes. All participants received an online, 12-week EBCT program and were randomized to receive one of three digital access interventions: print materials (control, n = 30); print materials + loaner iPad device with data plan coverage (n = 30); or print materials + loaner device + up to six, 15-20-minute motivational interviewing-based coaching calls to support technology needs (n = 30). A composite score of trial engagement (primary outcome) and self-reported smoking abstinence and use of EBCT resources (secondary outcomes) were assessed online at 4 and 12 weeks. Qualitative interviews were used to assess patient experience. Neither participants nor outcome assessors were blinded to group assignment. Results: Results are reported for all 30 participants in each group. The average age of participants is 51.0 years and 61% are women. We show no significant arm differences for the trial engagement composite score (p = 0.30). We also find coaching support is significantly (p < 0.05) associated with enhanced smoking-related treatment response, including cigarette abstinence and use of EBCT resources, and participants reported positive experiences with the intervention. Conclusions: The coaching intervention to support technology needs is acceptable and shows preliminary evidence of its efficacy in smoking-related treatment response. Further studies could refine and implement the coaching intervention for trial engagement and long-term cessation.

Abstract:Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary impact of Kick Vaping among Latino young adults. Methods: Forty Latino young adults (ages 18 to 25) who were currently vaping received Kick Vaping, a vaping cessation text messaging intervention available in English and Spanish. Feasibility was measured by the eligibility rate (defined as the proportion of individuals screened who were eligible), enrollment rate (the proportion of eligible individuals who enrolled), and follow-up rate (the proportion of participants who completed the follow-up assessment at Month 3). Acceptability was measured by overall satisfaction with the intervention and perceived helpfulness. Preliminary impact was measured by self-reported 7-day point prevalence abstinence (not vaping, even a single puff, in the past seven days) and changes in self-efficacy. Results: A total of 203 individuals were identified, 61 completed the eligibility assessment, and 55 were eligible to participate in the study. Forty individuals consented to participate in the study and enrolled in Kick Vaping. The eligibility and enrollment rates were 30.0% (61/203) and 72.7% (40/55), respectively. At baseline, participants' mean age was 22.3 years old (SD 2.1), 45.0% of participants were female, and 45.0% were heterosexual or straight. Half of the participants had a high school education or less (50.0%) and were currently employed. Fourteen (35.0%) participants reported speaking English and Spanish equally. Most participants used disposable devices (70%), vaped daily (97.5%), had low (37.5%) or medium (35.0%) e-cigarette dependence, and had attempted to quit in the past year (72.5%). At Month 3, the follow-up rate was 90% (36/40). Treating those lost to follow-up as participants who continued vaping, 75% (30/40) of participants self-reported 7-day point prevalence abstinence. Self-efficacy mean scores significantly increased from 30.65 (SD 8.07) at baseline to 50.11 (SD 10.57) at follow-up (p<0.01). Moreover, most participants (88.9%, 32/36) reported being satisfied/extremely satisfied with Kick Vaping. Additionally, most participants (83.3%, 30/36) reported that the intervention included "just the right amount of messages". Lastly, most participants (86.1%, 31/16) reported that Kick Vaping helped them quit vaping "a lot". Conclusion: It is feasible to recruit and retain Latino young adults in a vaping cessation text messaging intervention. Moreover, Kick Vaping generated high satisfaction and perceived helpfulness among Latino young adults, significantly increased self-efficacy, and resulted in a notable vaping cessation rate at Month 3. Additional testing in a randomized clinical trial is warranted to assess the efficacy of the intervention. Citation Format: Rafael H. Abstract:Background: Smoking rates in the UK have declined steadily over the past decades, masking considerable inequalities, as little change has been observed among people with a mental health condition. This trial sought to assess the feasibility and acceptability of supplying an electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) starter kit for smoking cessation as an adjunct to usual care for smoking cessation, to smokers with a mental health condition treated in the community, to inform a future effectiveness trial. Methods: This randomised controlled feasibility trial, conducted March-December 2022, compared the intervention (e-cigarette starter kit with a corresponding information leaflet and demonstration with Very Brief Advice) with a usual care control at 1-month follow-up. Participants were 18+ years, receiving treatment for any mental health condition in primary or secondary care in three Mental Health Trusts in Yorkshire and one in London, UK. They were also willing to address their smoking through either cessation or reduction of cigarette consumption. The agreed primary outcome measure was feasibility (consent~15% of eligible participants; attrition rate<30%). Acceptability, validated sustained abstinence and at least 50% cigarette consumption reduction at 1-month, were also evaluated and qualitative interviews conducted to further explore acceptability in this population. Results: Feasibility targets were partially met; of 201 eligible participants, 43 (mean age = 45.2, SD = 12.7; 39.5% female) were recruited (21.4%) and randomised (intervention:48.8%, n=21; control:51.2%, n=22). Attrition rate was 37.2% at 1-month follow-up and was higher (45.5%) in the control group. At follow-up (n=27), 93.3% (n=14) in the intervention group and 25.0% (n=3) in the control group reported e-cigarette use. The intervention was well received with minimal negative effects. In intention-to-treat analysis, validated sustained abstinence at 1-month was 2/21 (9.5%) and 0/22 (0%) and at least 50% reduction in cigarette consumption 13/21 (61.9%) and 3/22 (13.6%), for the intervention and control group, respectively. Qualitative analysis of participant interviews (N=5) showed the intervention was broadly acceptable, but they also highlighted areas of improvements for the intervention and trial delivery. Conclusions: Offering an e-cigarette starter kit to smokers with a mental health condition treated in the community was acceptable and largely feasible, with harm reduction outcomes (i.e. switching from cigarette smoking to e-cigarette use and substantial reduction in cigarette consumption) favouring the intervention. The findings of the study will be used to help inform the design of a main trial.

Abstract:Background: Approximately half of smokers attempt to quit, but 90% of these attempts fail. Video game-based interventions have the potential to address common barriers to evidence-based smoking cessation treatment, including high cost, lack of health care access, and low engagement. Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of a video game-based smoking cessation intervention called Inspired and its impact on the 7-day smoking point prevalence at the 30-day follow-up. Methods: US adults (n=48) were recruited via the web to use Inspired on their smartphones for 7 weeks. The object of the game was to defend a healing tree against attackers. Levels of the game were unlocked twice daily when participants self-reported the number of cigarettes they smoked since the previous entry. Completion of the levels awarded players in-game currency, which could strengthen in-game abilities. Participants received additional in-game rewards to aid gameplay by submitting either smoking self-reports only or self-reports indicating abstinence, determined through random assignment. In addition, participants completed a web-based survey at intake, week 4, week 7, and the 30-day follow-up. Results: Of the 48 participants, who had an average age of 39.8 (SD 10.7) years, 27 (56%) were female, 4 (8%) Hispanic, 37 (77%) White, and 27 (56%) employed; 26 (54%) earned <US $40,000 a year; and 14 (29%) lived in nonurban areas (eg, rural and suburban). There were no significant differences between the groups, so all outcome data were combined. Participants averaged 20.6 (SD 15.3) days of gameplay and reached a mean highest game level of 10.7 (SD 8.4), although there was a high degree of variability. Participants reported abstinence on 31.4% (SD 38.2%) of all cessation phase reports and averaged 5.4 (SD 9.8) consecutive abstinent smoke reports. For every 1 SD increase in the highest level achieved, there was a 27% increase in the percentage of abstinent samples and a 405% increase in longest continuous abstinence. At the 30-day follow-up, 23% (11/48) of the participants reported having not taken a cigarette puff in the prior 7 days and 31% (15/48) had spent at least 24 hours without smoking in the prior 14 days. On an 11-point scale, participants rated the intervention moderately favorably: if they had to do it again, they would use Inspired to help them quit (mean 6.4, SD 3.4), and Inspired was helpful in their current attempt to quit (mean 5.4, SD 3.6). Conclusions: These results support the acceptability of Inspired. Although high dropout rates prevent conclusions on feasibility, a subset of the participants responded favorably. Scalable and accessible video game-based smoking cessation interventions could be the key to addressing the foremost cause of preventable morbidity and mortality in the United States. Abstract:(1) Background: The increasing use of e-cigarettes/vaping in children and adolescents has been recognised as a global health concern. We aim to explore the Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice of General Practitioners (GPs) in Sydney regarding the use of e-cigarettes in children and adolescents and identify the barriers to addressing this issue. (2) Methods: This pilot study was a cross-sectional study conducted using an electronic questionnaire with a Likert scale and free-text responses. (3) Results: Fifty-three GPs participated in the study (male = 24 and female = 29) with a mean age of 50 ± 5.5 years. There was strong agreement (mean 4.5) about respiratory adverse effects and addictive potential. However, there was less awareness of cardiac side effects and the occurrence of burns. There is a lack of conversation about e-cigarettes in GP practice and a deficit of confidence in GPs regarding managing e-cigarette use in children and adolescents. (4) Conclusions: Our pilot study has shown that GPs are somewhat knowledgeable about the potential adverse effects of the use of e-cigarettes in children and adolescents, though there is a lack of knowledge of the complete spectrum of adverse effects and more importantly, there is a paucity of a structured approach to discuss the use of e-cigarettes with children and adolescents, and there is a low level of confidence in addressing these issues. There is a need for educational interventions for GPs to increase awareness of the potential adverse effects of using e-cigarettes and build confidence in providing management to children and adolescents regarding the use of e-cigarettes.

EXTRACTING STRUCTURAL CHARACTERISTICS OF DORMANT HERBACEOUS FLOODPLAIN VEGETATION FROM AIRBORNE LASER SCANNER DATA

Abstract:To map spatial patterns of floodplain vegetation structure for hydrodynamic modelling, airborne laser scanning is a promising tool. In a test for the lower Rhine floodplain, vegetation height and density of herbaceous vegetation were measured in the field at 42 georeferenced plots of 200 m 2 each. Simultaneously, three airborne laser scanning (ALS) surveys were carried out in the same areas resulting in three high resolution, first pulse, small-footprint datasets. The laser data surveys differed in flying height, gain setting and laser diode age. Laser points were labelled as either vegetation or ground using three different methods: (1) a fixed threshold value, (2) a flexible threshold value based on the inflection point in the normalised height distribution, and (3) using a Gaussian distribution to separate noise in the ground surface points from vegetation. Twenty-one statistics were computed for each of the resulting point distributions, which were subsequently compared to field observations of vegetation height. Additionally, the Percentage Index (PI) was computed to relate density of vegetation points to hydrodynamic vegetation density. The vegetation height was best predicted by using the inflection method for labelling and the 95 percentile as a regressor (R 2 = 0.74 – 0.88). Vegetation density was best predicted using the threshold method for labelling and the PI as a predictor (R 2 = 0.51). The results of vegetation height prediction were found to depend on the combined effect of flying height, gain setting or laser diode age. We conclude that high resolution ALS data can be used to estimate vegetation height and density of herbaceous vegetation in winter condition, but field reference data remains necessary for calibration until a standard measure of sensitivity is supplied together with the laser data.

Abstract:Aim: To explore the views of tobacco-smoking chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma-COPD overlap (ACO) patients on telehealth-based cessation programs and the role of e-cigarettes as an aid to quit smoking. Background: Tobacco smoking accelerates the progression of COPD. Traditional smoking cessation programs often do not entirely address the unique needs of COPD patients, leading to suboptimal effectiveness for this population. This research is aimed at describing the attitudes and preferences of COPD and ACO patients toward innovative, telehealth-based smoking cessation strategies and the potential application of e-cigarettes as a quitting aid. Methods: A qualitative exploratory approach was adopted in this study, employing both focus groups and individual interviews with English-speaking adults with diagnosed COPD or ACO. Participants included both current smokers (≥ 5 cigarettes/day) and recent ex-smokers (who quit < 12 months ago). Data were systematically coded with iterative reliability checks and subjected to thematic analysis to extract key themes. Findings: A total of 24 individuals participated in this study. The emergent themes were the perceived structure and elements of a successful smoking cessation program, the possible integration of telehealth with digital technologies, and the strategic use of e-cigarettes for smoking reduction or cessation. The participants stressed the importance of both social and professional support in facilitating smoking cessation, expressing a high value for insights provided by ex-smokers serving as mentors. A preference was observed for group settings; however, the need for individualized plans was also highlighted, considering the diverse motivations individuals had to quit smoking. The participants perceived online program delivery as potentially beneficial as it could provide immediate access to support during cravings or withdrawals and was accessible to remote users. Opinions on e-cigarettes were mixed; some participants saw them as a less harmful alternative to conventional smoking, while others were skeptical of their efficacy and safety and called for further research.

Feasibility, Acceptability, and Potential Impact of a Novel mHealth App for Smokers Ambivalent About Quitting: Randomized Pilot Study

Abstract:Background: Most smokers are ambivalent about quitting-they want to quit someday, but not now. Interventions are needed that can engage ambivalent smokers, build their motivation for quitting, and support future quit attempts. Mobile health (mHealth) apps offer a cost-effective platform for such interventions, but research is needed to inform their optimal design and assess their acceptability, feasibility, and potential effectiveness. Objective: This study aims to assess the feasibility, acceptability, and potential impact of a novel mHealth app for smokers who want to quit smoking someday but are ambivalent about quitting in the near term. Methods: We enrolled adults across the United States who smoked more than 10 cigarettes a day and were ambivalent about quitting (n=60). Participants were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 versions of the GEMS app: standard care (SC) versus enhanced care (EC). Both had a similar design and identical evidence-based, best-practice smoking cessation advice and resources, including the ability to earn free nicotine patches. EC also included a series of exercises called experiments designed to help ambivalent smokers clarify their goals, strengthen their motivation, and learn important behavioral skills for changing smoking behavior without making a commitment to quit. Outcomes were analyzed using automated app data and self-reported surveys at 1 and 3 months post enrollment. Results: Participants who installed the app (57/60, 95%) were largely female, White, socioeconomically disadvantaged, and highly nicotine dependent. As expected, key outcomes trended in favor of the EC group. Compared to SC users, EC participants had greater engagement (mean sessions 19.9 for EC vs 7.3 for SC). An intentional quit attempt was reported by 39.3% (11/28) of EC users and 37.9% (11/29) of SC users. Seven-day point prevalence smoking abstinence at the 3-month follow-up was reported by 14.7% (4/28) of EC users and 6.9% (2/29) of SC users. Among participants who earned a free trial of nicotine replacement therapy based on their app usage, 36.4% (8/22) of EC participants and 11.1% (2/18) of SC participants requested the treatment. A total of 17.9% (5/28) of EC and 3.4% (1/29) of SC participants used an in-app feature to access a free tobacco quitline. Other metrics were also promising. EC participants completed an average of 6.9 (SD 3.1) out of 9 experiments. Median helpfulness ratings for completed experiments ranged from 3 to 4 on a 5-point scale. Finally, satisfaction with both app versions was very good (mean 4.1 on a 5-point Likert scale) and 95.3% (41/43) of all respondents would recommend their app version to others. Conclusions: Ambivalent smokers were receptive to the app-based intervention, but the EC version, which combined best-practice cessation advice with self-paced, experiential exercises, was associated with greater use and evidence of behavior change. Baseline Characteristics of Young Adult Exclusive E-Cigarette Users Seeking Treatment

Abstract:Despite interest in quitting vaping among young adults (YAs), little is known about characteristics of e-cigarette (EC) users seeking treatment. In this study, YAs aged 18–24 living in the United States interested in vaping cessation treatment were recruited to complete an online survey regarding demographics and EC use. Primary eligibility criteria were EC use on at least 20 days per month (no other tobacco use), and interest in quitting in the next month. We report descriptive statistics for those who did and did not complete a mandatory coaching call (n = 981). In this sample, most EC users reported high nicotine dependence, a history of unsuccessful quit attempts (including 29.4% with previous NRT use), along with stress, anxiety, and depression. There were few meaningful differences in demographics, EC use behaviors, or behavioral health factors between those who engaged with a phone coaching call (fully enrolled in study; n = 508), and those who did not (n = 473). YAs demonstrated interest in vaping cessation support, but there were no clear characteristics for the half who did not complete a coaching call. Vaping cessation program designers should consider tailoring for the self-reported behavioral health concerns present in this population.

Abstract:The prevalence of youth vaping has, in a relatively short time, become an "epidemic." In the wake of such labeling by the Surgeon General, a number of important examinations of vaping have been conducted. These have largely focused on high school and college‐age youth as this demographic shows the greatest prevalence of use. Nonetheless, no measure has been made available which might allow for the comprehensive assessment of quantity and frequency of vaping among this age group, thus aiding in standardization across settings. The current study utilized cognitive interviews with high school and college‐age youth who use vaping devices to inform the preliminary development of such an assessment. The sample consists of eight students between the ages of 15 and 24 (Mage = 18.75, SD = 2.73, 62.5% female, 75.0% Hispanic/Latino/a/x, 100.0% White). Interviewing and measure refinement were conducted in a two‐phase iterative fashion. Suggestions made during cognitive interviews resulted in the refinement of assessed content type, updated categories and pictures of vaping devices, as well as updated and age‐relevant terminology. Further, instructions were streamlined, and assessment items and multiple‐choice options were refined to maximize clarity and to minimize participant confusion. The result of this study, the E‐Cigarette Assessment for Youth Revised, is a unique tool for standardizing examinations of the quantity and frequency of vaping behaviors among high school students and college‐age youth.

Targeted smoking cessation for dual users of combustible and electronic cigarettes: a randomised controlled trial

Abstract:Background: Although many smokers use electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) to quit smoking, most continue to smoke while vaping. This dual use might delay cessation and increase toxicant exposure. We aimed to test the efficacy of a self-help intervention designed to help dual users to quit smoking. Methods: In this three-arm randomised controlled trial we recruited individuals in the USA using Facebook and multimedia advertisements. Included participants were 18 years or older, smoked at least weekly in the preceding year, and vaped at least weekly in the preceding month. We used computer generated randomisation with balanced-permuted blocks (block size 10, with 2-4-4 ratio) to allocate participants to assessment only (ASSESS group), generic smoking cessation self-help booklets (GENERIC group), or booklets targeting dual users (eTARGET group). Individuals in the generic or targeted intervention groups received monthly cessation materials for 18 months, with assessments every 3 months for 24 months. The main outcome was self-reported 7-day point-prevalence smoking abstinence at each assessment point. All randomly allocated participants were included in primary analyses using generalised estimating equations for each of 20 datasets created by multiple imputation. Analysis of the χ2s produced an F test. The trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT02416011, and is now closed. Findings: Between July 12, 2016, and June 30, 2017, we randomly assigned 2896 dual users (575 to assessment, 1154 to generic intervention, and 1167 to targeted self-help). 7-day point-prevalence smoking abstinence increased from 14% at 3 months to 42% at 24 months (F7,541·7=67·1, p<0·0001) in the overall sample. Targeted self-help resulted in higher smoking abstinence than did assessment alone throughout the treatment period (F1,973·8=10·20, p=0·0014 [α=0·017]). The generic intervention group had abstinence rates between those of the assessment and targeted groups, but did not significantly differ from either when adjusted for multiple comparisons (GENERIC vs eTARGET F1,1102·5=1·79, p=0·18 [α=0·05]; GENERIC vs ASSESS F1,676·7=4·29, p=0·039 [α=0·025]). Differences between study groups attenuated after the interventions ended. Interpretation: A targeted self-help intervention with high potential for dissemination could be efficacious in promoting smoking cessation among dual users of combustible cigarettes and e-cigarettes. Abstract:Liquid methyl iodide has been irradiated by helium ions in the energy range from about 3 to 35 Mev. Yields of I/sub 2/, C/sub 2/H/sub 6/, CH/sub 4/, C/ sub 2/H/sub 4/, C/sub 2/H/sub 2/, and H/sub 2/ ar e all higher than those observed in gamma -radiolysis and increase with decreasing helium ion energy. The relative yield of acetylene, although small, increases more than twofold in going from 35-Mev to 3-Mev helium ions. Apparently all the above products are produced in combination reactions of radicals as they diffuse out of the spurs in which they are produced. It would appear that acetylene is produced in a secondary track reaction. (auth)

Abstract:Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) is a commonly used non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug capable of acetylating proteins in the course of a simple, non-enzymatic chemical reaction. Its main physiological effect is inhibiting prostanoid synthesis. Cyclooxygenases, COX-1 and COX-2, are crucial in the metabolic pathway leading to the generation of prostanoids. Both enzymes are major cellular targets for aspirin. The physiological spectrum of the biological activity of the prostanoids is very broad, and underlies the high clinical effectiveness of aspirin as an anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, and analgesic drug. Apart from the inhibition of prostanoid synthesis aspirin shows a variety of pharmacological activities, including reduction of ATP storage pools, increased extracellular adenosine, lowered inducible nitric oxide synthase activity, modulation of mitogen-activated protein kinases, and the expression of a plethora of genes induced under conditions of cell stress via the regulation of transcription factor NFkappaB activity. Such multipotent action explains its wide use in clinical practice. Regardless of the accumulated evidence on the molecular mechanisms of aspirin's action, the rationale of the appropriate dosing and monitoring of aspirin therapy and prophylaxis remains obscure. Hence, an evaluation and reasonable weighing of the cost/benefit ratio of aspirin therapy in various diseases seems appropriate.

Abstract:Objectives The Cessation of Smoking Trial in the Emergency Department (COSTED) trial aims to ascertain whether brief advice, the provision of an e-cigarette starter kit and referral to stop smoking services (SSS), increases smoking cessation in people attending the emergency department. Patient and public involvement (PPI) and scoping work were undertaken to select an appropriate e-cigarette for the trial. Design and setting PPI consultation and feasibility scoping about potential devices with a professional and lay panel, all based in England. Consultation was via email, telephone or video interview. This work took place between April and July 2021, prior to recruitment commencing for the COSTED trial. Participants A professional panel (n=7) including representatives from academia, SSS and the independent vaping industry, and a PPI lay panel (n=3) who smoke or vape. Results The professional panel recommended a shortlist of devices which were tested by the PPI lay panel. Key criteria for selecting an appropriate e-cigarette for smoking cessation intervention include satisfaction, usability, affordability and availability. Simplicity of use was highlighted by the PPI lay panel, who found refillable devices complex, and availability of consumables was highlighted as more important than price by both panels. The pod device selected for inclusion was rated highly for satisfaction and usability and had mid-price range and consumables which were widely available. Conclusions To select the most appropriate device for the COSTED trial, each criterion required assessment to ensure the best fit to the intervention context and needs of the target population. There is a need for guidance to help enable decision-making about choice of vape products, tailored to service users' needs. We propose a bespoke checklist template, based on our findings, to assist with this process. This has applicability to the recent government announcement of a 'Swap to Stop' programme, offering a vaping starter kit to smokers across England, allowing services flexibility to shape their own programmes and models of delivery. Abstract:Background and objectives This pilot study tested the feasibility of tracking e-cigarette initiation over three months using a burst-of-measurement approach and examined reactivity to the ecological momentary assessment (EMA) data capture technique in this context. Methods Adults who smoked daily and were interested in trying e-cigarette use received an e-cigarette starter kit and were randomized to complete EMA reports ( n = 30) vs. not ( n = 29). Participants ( M age =44.1 years [ SD =12.6], 61.0 % male, 54.3 % White, 38.9 % Black/African American) smoked 13.0 cigarettes per day on average ( SD =8.4) and reported mild-to-moderate nicotine dependence ( M FTND =4.0 [ SD =2.3]). Biochemical assessment and surveys were conducted at enrollment, e-cigarette initiation (1 week later), and 1-week, 1-month, and 3-month post e-cigarette initiation. Results A subset (17 %) of participants did not achieve the minimum 75 % EMA adherence at Week 1. The remaining participants showed excellent adherence with the EMA protocol, with a consistently high response rate to audibly prompted mini-surveys during screening (93 %) and follow-up weeks (93 %, 93 %, and 92 %, respectively). No consistent trend emerged in comparing the two randomized groups, either on variables relevant to the public health impact of e-cigarette initiation (i.e., cigarettes/day, exposure to smoke, exposure to nicotine, motivation to quit smoking), or in e-cigarette use (i.e., bouts/day, puffs/bout), with average Cohen's d values across timepoints ranging from d = 0.02 for exposure to smoke to d = 0.06 for cigarettes per day. Conclusions Conducting EMA with adults who smoke daily and are initiating e-cigarette use appears feasible, with some caveats. Reactivity to EMA during e-cigarette initiation appears to be small or non-significant.
