Abstract:Practical gas sensing application requires sensors to quantify target analytes with high sensitivity and reproducibility. However, conventional surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensor lacks reproducibility and quantification arising from variations of "hot spot" distribution and measurement conditions. Here, a ratiodependent SERS sensor was developed for quantitative label-free gas sensing. Au@Ag-Au nanoparticles (NPs) were filtered onto anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) forming Au@Ag-Au@AAO SERS substrate. 4-MBA was encapsulated in the gap of Au@Ag-Au and served as the internal standard (IS) to calibrate SERS signal fluctuation for improved quantification ability. Combined with headspace sampling method, SO2 residue in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) can be extracted and captured on the immediate vicinity of Au@Ag-Au surface. The intensity ratio I-613 (-1)(cm) /I-1078 (-1)(cm) showed excellent linearity within the range of 0.5 mg/kg-500 mg/kg, demonstrating superior quantification performance for SO2 detection. Signals for concentration as low as 0.05 mg/kg of SO2 could be effectively collected, much lower than the strictest limit 10 mg/kg in Chinese Pharmacopoeia. Combined with a handheld Raman spectrometer, handy and quantitative TCM quality evaluation in aspect of SO2 residue was realized. This ratiometric SERS sensor functioned well in rapid on-site SO2 quantification, exhibiting excellent sensitivity and simple operability.

Abstract:Risk level of benzidine residue to the environment and food safety urges surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates to develop with high sensitivity and rapid enrichment. Herein, a hybrid of Au NPs decorated crystalline carbon nitride nano-walls (Au/CCN NWs) is fabricated on Al sheet and employed as a SERS substrate for the first time. An electro-enhanced adsorption strategy is employed to endow as-prepared Au/CCN NWs/Al chip with rapid assay capability. Crystalline phase transition and nano-wall morphology respectively bestows high charge transfer efficiency and favorable enrichment activity upon Au/CCN NWs/Al chip, and the hybrid substrate owns a considerable enhancement factor of 1.76 × 106 under static adsorption mode. Moreover, Au/CCN NWs/Al substrate can achieve the saturation enrichment of benzidine in 120 s with the help of electro-enhanced adsorption, and gains a significantly enhanced signal response compared to static adsorption. Likewise, the highly sensitive response (1 μg L-1), superior reproducibility (RSD = 9.11 %, n = 100) and reliable accuracy (recovery rate of 95.55 %-109.46 %) jointly demonstrate that Au/CCN NWs/Al substrate may be applicable for detecting benzidine residue in actual application. This work offers an integrated solution to both enhance charge transfer efficiency and enrichment activity based on collaborative crystalline phase transition and electro-enhanced adsorption, and may inspire the design of novel noble metal/semiconductor hybrid SERS substrates.

Abstract:Aromatic amines water were qualitatively detected using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy（SERS）.SERS-active silver colloids were fabricated via wet chemical synthesis and characterized by UV-Vis spectro-photometry,dynamic light scattering and scanning electron microscopy（SEM）,which revealed good dispersibility and uniformity of silver colloids.Thin-layer chromatography（TLC） plates were coated with silver colloids as SERS substrates.A portable Raman spectrometer was employed for rapid on-site detection of aromatic amines in water.In addition,the results showed that appropriate concentration of silver colloids and NaCl improved SERS detection,and the detection limit of some aromatic amines was as low as 5×10^-6 mol·L^-1 under the optimum condition.This indicates SERS can be used for the rapid on-site detection of aromatic amines in water.

Abstract:A portable surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensor is developed and applied to simultaneous detection of aniline and phenol derivatives in a label-free way with an electrostatic preconcentration technique to amplify the signals. A SERS-active substrate, silver-electro-deposited screen-printed electrodes (Ag-SPEs), is used for qualification and quantification of polar organic pollutants. Observation of SERS spectra at different potentials indicates that polar pollutants are selectively adsorbed on the Ag-SPEs at a given potential, suggesting that Ag-SPEs could selectively attract polar pollutants to an oppositely charged electrode at different potentials. Optimum SERS-active substrate was obtained when a potential of -0.15 V vs Ag/AgCl was applied on the SPEs in 0.1 M AgNO3 solution for 10 min. Moreover, the effects of experimental variables such as the electrodeposition time and potential of Ag and preconcentration time of polar molecules on the SERS signals are presented. Under optimum conditions and with a 785 nm laser, the method is effective over a wide range of concentration (1 nM to 1 mu M) for aniline and phenol derivatives. The novel method described herein presents a new detection regime for environmental pollutant analysis and also demonstrates simultaneous multiplexed detection of polar organic pollutants using convenient Ag-SPEs.
Detection of organic dyes using Ag NPAs/SMP SERS substrate produced via sandpaper template-assisted lithography and liquid-liquid interface self-assembly

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a highly sensitive and reliable fingerprinting technique. However, its analytical capability is closely related to the quality of a SERS substrate used for the analysis. In particular, conventional colloidal substrates possess disadvantages in terms of controllability, stability, and reproducibility, which limit their application. In order to address these issues, a simple, cost-effective, and efficient SERS substrate based on silver nanoparticle arrays (Ag NPAs) and sandpaper-molded polydimethylsiloxane (SMP) was proposed in this work. Successfully prepared via template lithography and liquid-liquid interface self-assembly (LLISA), the substrate can be applied to the specific detection of organic dyes in the environment. The substrate exhibited good SERS performance, and the limit of detection (LOD) of rhodamine 6G (R6G) was shown to be 10-7 M under the optimal conditions (1000 grit sandpaper) with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 7.76%. Moreover, the SERS signal intensity was maintained at 60% of the initial intensity after the substrate was stored for 30 days. In addition, the Ag NPAs/SMP SERS substrate was also employed to detect crystal violet (CV) and methylene blue (MB) with the LODs of 10-6 M and 10-7 M, respectively. In summary, the Ag NPAs/SMP SERS substrate prepared in this study has great potential for the detection of organic dyes in ecological environments.
Au Decorated WO3 Nanorods Array as Highly Sensitive SERS Substrate for Organic Pollutant Detection

Abstract:Vertically aligned Au decorated WO3 nanorods (Au-WO3 NRs) were investigated as cheap and sensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-active substrates. The WO3 NRs were prepared through a simple, low-temperature hydrothermal route and made SERS-active through deposition of Au nanoparticles by ion sputtering. The structure and morphology of WO3 were investigated through XRD, SEM and TEM. The probe molecule rhodamine 6G (R6G) has been detected by the substrate. It is found that the Au nanoparticles of about 5 nm in diameter are uniformly distributed on the WO3 nanorod which has a rectangular cross-section. The Au-WO3 NRs substrate shows high sensitivity for R6G, suggesting a promising potential for application in rapid detection of environmental pollutants.

Abstract:In recent researches, anisotropic plasmonic core-shell nanomaterial has gained much attention in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) due to its brilliant uniformity and optical properties. Herein, a bimetallic Core-Molecule-Shell (CMS) composite nanorods SERS substrate nanomaterial (Au NB-DT@Ag NRs) was designed and synthesized under precise regulation. The inner core is gold nanobipyramids (Au NBs), which possess superior plasmonic properties. Uniform Au NBs of five different sizes were fabricated via penta-twinned gold seeds meditated growth method. The length varied from 160 to 62 nm and the corresponding diameter from 60 to 23 nm while the longitudinal surface plasmonic resonance (SPR) changed from 908 to 715 nm. The SERS activity of the five Au NBs were compared and the optimal size one with length of 78 nm and width of 28 nm was set as the inner core. After modification of Raman reporter (DT), the silver of different amount was deposited on the surface of Au NB-DTs and form the Au NB-DT@Ag nanocomposite. The shape of the nanostructure become rod gradually and become longer while the longitudinal SPR wavelength varied from 733 nm to 664 nm with the increase of silver nitrate addition. The Au NB-DT@Ag NRs with the best SERS activity (b-3) could realize quantitative detection of toxic dyes malachite green (MG) and crystal violet (CV) as low as 5×10-9 M, showing good reproducibility and stability. This work offers a new design strategy of SERS substrate for reliable quantitative SERS detection application.

Abstract:2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) is a highly toxic persistent organic pollutant (POP) that can remain present in the environment for a long time. Prolonged exposure to TCDD may bring about a wide variety of deleterious health effects to humans. Based on these circumstances, a rapid and facile surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) method with gold nanoparticle-modified silver nanorod (AuNP@AgNR) substrates was developed for detection of 2,3,7,8-TCDD. Compared with SERS-active gold nanoparticles and silver nanorod substrate, the prepared AuNP@AgNR substrate showed an outstanding SERS performance with an enhancement factor of up to 2.4 × 108. Furthermore, using AuNP@AgNR as a SERS substrate, we achieved the highly sensitive detection of 2,3,7,8-TCDD, and a density functional theory calculation was 6 to assign the characteristic peaks of 2,3,7,8-TCDD. The reliable linear range was determined to be 10 ng mL−1 to 10 μg mL−1, with the limit of detection and the limit of quantitation as low as 7.1 and 8.2 ng mL−1, respectively. By this method, the recovery rates of 2,3,7,8-TCDD spiked in the river samples were 82.3–97.4% with a relative standard deviation between 1.9 and 8.4%. These results show that the AuNP@AgNR substrate can be used for highly sensitive detection of 2,3,7,8-TCDD and has potential applications in the detection of other POPs.

Abstract:An effective surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate is designed and fabricated by synthesis of SiO2 nanorods array via glancing angle deposition, followed by coating Au nanoparticles onto SiO2 surface in order to create numerous "hot spots". The detecting sensitivity of such substrate could be optimized by simply adjusting the deposition time of Au. Thus, it can be used for detection of Rhodamine 6G at concentration as low as 10−9 M. Furthermore, our SERS substrate is applied to detect 5 μg/g polychlorinated biphenyls in soil sample, which proves its potential for trace environmental pollutants detection.

Abstract:The fabrication of SERS substrates, which can offer the advantages of strong Raman signal enhancement with good reproducibility and low cost, is still a challenge for practical applications. In this work, a simple three-dimensional (3D) paper-based SERS substrate, which contains plasmonic silver-nanoparticles (AgNPs), has been developed by the silver mirror reaction. This paper strip was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), etc. Pretreatment of the paper as well as the reaction time, temperature, and reagent concentrations for the silver mirror reaction were varied for further studies. With the optimized experimental parameters, the AgNPs synthesized and distributed in-situ on the paper strip could give more favorable SERS performance. The limit of detection (LOD) as low as 10(-11)M for Rhodamine 6G (R6G) and 10(-9)M for p-aminothiophenol (p-ATP) plus wide linear range for the log-log plot of Raman intensity versus analyte concentration were achieved. The detection of R6G in rain water was also carried out successfully. The merits of this protocol include low cost, easy operation, high sensitivity and acceptable stability, which make it ideal for the detection of environmental samples in trace amounts.
High-Performance Au@Ag Nanorods Substrate for SERS Detection of Malachite Green in Aquatic Products

Abstract:In order to improve the detection performance of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), a low-cost Au@Ag nanorods (Au@Ag NRs) substrate with a good SERS enhancement effect was developed and applied to the detection of malachite green (MG) in aquaculture water and crayfish. By comparing the SERS signal enhancement effect of five kinds of Au@Ag NRs substrates with different silver layer thickness on 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) solution, it was found that the substrate prepared with 100 μL AgNO3 had the smallest aspect ratio (3.27) and the thickest Ag layer (4.1 nm). However, it showed a good signal enhancement effect, and achieved a detection of 4-MBA as low as 1 × 10−11 M, which was 8.7 times higher than that of the AuNRs substrate. In addition, the Au@Ag NRs substrate developed in this study was used for SRES detection of MG in crayfish; its detection limit was 1.58 × 10−9 M. The developed Au@Ag NRs sensor had the advantages of stable SERS signal, uniform size and low cost, which provided a new tool for SERS signal enhancement and highly sensitive SERS detection method development.

Abstract:Nitrite ions present a significant risk to both environmental and human health, necessitating precise and sensitive detection methods. Herein, we fabricated a highly sensitive SERS sensor based on PVDF/Au nanofibers for nitrite ion detection. The synthesis of PVDF nanofibers involved the utilization of electrospinning apparatus, while the uniformity and high density of SERS activity "hot spots" were achieved by directly coating plasma gold nanoparticles onto the PVDF surface adopting thermal evaporation. The efficient charge transfers of the interface dipole layer directly generated on the surface of PVDF nanofibers were achieved through thermal evaporation. The enhanced Raman responses owe to the combined effects of local surface plasmon resonance of Au nanoparticles and photoelectric and piezoelectric properties of PVDF. It is noteworthy that the prepared SERS substrate exhibited high sensitivity towards Rhodamine 6G, boasting an enhancement factor of 9.4 × 107 and a detecting scope spanning from 10-6  10-11 M. Furthermore, the PVDF/Au membrane functionalized with p-aminothiophenol (PATP) effectively captured NO2- ions at concentrations as low as 10-8 M and successfully detected NO2- in river water samples. Additionally, the SERS substrate has good repeatability and stability, and can be applied to trace detection in food detection and medical diagnosis.

Rapid SERS inspection of carcinogenic aromatic amines in textiles by using liquid interfacial assembled Au array

Abstract:<p>Wide uses of azo dyes produce a great risk of high residuals of carcinogenic aromatic amines, and hence it is important to rapidly analyze these carcinogenic compounds in the textile products to guarantee product safety. In the present work, a surface enhanced Raman spectroscopic (SERS) method was developed for rapid detection of carcinogenic aromatic amines in textiles. In this method, target aromatic amines are extracted from textiles, and then gold nanoparticles are added to the organic extractant, which assemble into closely packed Au array at liquid interface in situ. Finally, fingerprint SERS signals of the target aromatic amines are detected on the generated Au array on the basis of strong chemical interaction between the aromatic amines and the Au surface. The proposed method provided good reproducibility with a relative standard deviation of 3.5% for ten parallel tests of benzidine. It was applied to analyze 70 textile products. To strengthen the spectroscopic data processing, a cluster analysis model was established with 50 samples to automatically identify the spectra based on the good signal reproducibility. The other 20 samples were used as test sets to validate this model. It was found that all the positive samples were successfully identified with false positive rate of 20%. With the addition of the Artificial Intelligence step, the reliability of the discriminant results can be ensured.</p>

Facile Preparation of Ag-NP-Deposited HRGB-SERS Substrate for Detection of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Water

Abstract:In this study, a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate based on high-refractive-index reflective glass beads (HRGBs) was prepared by a facile method and successfully applied to the detection of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The HRGB-SERS substrate was prepared by depositing silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) onto the surface of HRGBs. The preparation procedure of the substrate was simplified by accelerating the hydrolysis of (3-Aminopropyl) trimethoxysilane (APTMS) and increasing the concentration of Ag NPs. Compared with previous methods, the HRGB-SERS substrate prepared with one round of deposition has the same detection performance, a simpler preparation process, and lower cost. Additionally, halide ions were used to modify the substrate to increase the detection sensitivity of PAHs. Adding 10 mM KBr solution to the HRGB-SERS substrate was found to achieve the best modification effect. Under the optimal modification conditions, the detection sensitivity of pyrene was improved by 3 orders of magnitude (10−7 M). Due to the HRGB-SERS substrate’s excellent performance, the rapid identification and trace detection of spiked water samples mixed with anthracene, phenanthrene, and pyrene was realized using a Raman spectrometer with only a volume of 10 μL of the water samples.

Uniform monolayer of branched silver nanoplates-assembled nanoparticles for sensitive and reproducible SERS detection of harmful molecules

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technique can offer the fingerprint information of trace substances, and thus has wide potential applications in many fields. There is still a requirement to develop new and effective methods to construct high-performance SERS substrates. Here, a facile electrodeposition method is presented for fabricating large-scale uniform films assembled by branched silver (Ag) nanoplates. The morphology and structure of such film are highly uniform over a large area, which can ensure good spectral uniformity and reproducibility. There are dense sub-10 nm gaps between neighboring Ag nanoplates and between neighboring branches, forming plenty of hot spots. Therefore, the Ag nanoparticle monolayer exhibits high SERS activity along with excellent spectral repeatability. It is found that the limits of detection (LODs) towards rhodamine 6G and 4-aminothiophenol can reach 0.387 pM and 49.0 pM, respectively, showing high sensitivity of the designed SERS substrate. The enhancement factor of the prepared roughened Ag nanoparticle monolayer is computed to be as large as 2.37 × 10 8 . Then, the highly roughened nanoparticle monolayer is used to detect cationic dye and fungicide (methylene blue, MB) and a synthetic cytokinin (6-benzylaminopurine, 6-BAP), and the corresponding LODs are determined down to 1.1 nM and 28.8 pM, respectively. Such LODs are much lower than the tolerance for MB and 6-BAP residues established by some authoritative regulations. Sensitive monitoring of 6-BAP residue on vegetables and fruits can also be achieved using such SERS substrate, indicating its promising application in environment monitoring and food safety supervision.

Abstract:The synthesis of Ag/Au nanoparticles (NPs) in a controlled manner has been a challenge for a long time. The aim of this report is to present a systematic study on the fabrication, characterization of Ag/Au alloy NP-based surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates. Silver (Ag) and gold (Au) colloidal NPs were prepared by chemical reduction route of the corresponding metal salts by trisodium citrate (TSC). Ag/Au alloy nanoparticles with varying molar fractions are prepared in aqueous solution by the simultaneous reduction of AgNO3 and HAuCl4 by TSC. The composition of Ag and Au in the alloy samples was controlled by tuning the molar ratio of Ag+/Au3+ in the mixture solution. The morphologies of the different products were characterized by TEM, and the size of obtained samples was in the range of 40 to 60 nm. The resulting samples were denoted as AgNPs, AuNPs, Ag3Au, AgAu, and AgAu3 NPs. In order to compare the optical property of the Ag/Au alloy and Ag/Au mixture, we mixed the pure Ag and Au NPs with different ratios to obtain the aggregated nanoparticles. Ag/Au alloy NPs were demonstrated as an ultrasensitive SERS substrate for the detection of rhodamine B (RhB) molecules. The concentration of RhB ranged from 10-11 to 10-5 M. The effect of the Au content on the optical and SERS properties of the Ag/Au alloys was studied. The obtained results show that the Au content in the Ag/Au alloys play an important role in the physical properties of Ag/Au alloy NPs. The SERS spectra of RhB from the as-prepared Ag/Au alloy NP substrates indicated the superior enhancement with high reproducibility and sensitivity compared to those of Ag or Au samples. Interestingly, the highest SERS activity was achieved for the Ag3Au sample with an enhancement factor larger than 1010 for 10-11 M RhB and a limit of detection (LOD) at 10-11 M, as well as good long-term stability after storage for 1 year. As far as we know, this is the highest sensitivity record of RhB by SERS detection. Furthermore, the composition-dependent SERS activity was explained in detail. These advantages demonstrated the potential for growing Ag/Au alloy NP-based SERS substrates in food safety and bioanalysis.
Multifunctional self-assembled gold nanorod monolayer/Ti3C2Tx nanocomposites based on interfacial electrostatic for highly sensitive SERS detection of organic dyes and adenine

Abstract:Gold nanorods (Au NRs)/Ti3C2Tx composites were prepared by self-assembly method as surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates. Due to strong electrostatic interaction, Au NRs are evenly arranged on the surface of Ti3C2Tx nanosheets, forming rich SERS hotspots. Au NRs/Ti3C2Tx have high sensitivity and good reproducibility for the determination of organic dyes such as rhodamine 6G, crystal violet and malachite green. The detection limits were 1 × 10−13, 1 × 10−13 and 1 × 10−12 M, respectively. The relative standard deviations of samples in 40 areas were 4.57 %, 2.79 % and 3.47 %, respectively. The synthesized SERS substrate is sensitive to adenine. For adenine molecules in the range of 1 × 10−5–1 × 10−9 M, SERS results show that the peak intensity is linear with adenine molecular concentration, and the detection limit can be as low as 1 × 10−9 M. In addition, adenine in aqueous solution has good anti-interference ability to other nucleic acids with similar structure, such as guanine, cytosine and thymine. Therefore, Au NRs/Ti3C2Tx are expected to become a potential substrate for unmarked, rapid and sensitive SERS detection of adenine in the field of bioanalysis.

CoFe2O4@HNTs/AuNPs Substrate for Rapid Magnetic Solid-Phase Extraction and Efficient SERS Detection of Complex Samples All-in-One

Abstract:Fast and accurate practical sample detection is a great challenge in on-site detection. Herein, we developed a CoFe2O4@HNTs/AuNPs substrate for rapid and efficient magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection of aromatic amines and nitrofuran in real samples all-in-one. Magnetic CoFe2O4 beads filled inside halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) can avoid aggregation of particles, endow the substrate with the rapid magnetic separation ability to simplify the pretreatment procedure, and reduce complex matrix interference. Meanwhile, outer surface AuNPs can generate electromagnetic enhancement and hot spots to amplify Raman signals of target molecules enriched/concentrated by HNTs. The CoFe2O4@HNTs/AuNPs substrate exhibited excellent SERS activity (high sensitivity, good reproducibility, and repeatability), pH stability (3.0-11.0), and good MSPE ability (fast magnetic enrichment/separation ability within 5 min). The CoFe2O4@HNTs/AuNPs MSPE SERS substrate can be applied for the determination of 4,4'-thioaniline and nitrofurantoin with a linear range of 0.054-21.7 mg/L and 0.05-1.0 mg/L, and the limits of detection were down to 0.026 mg/L and 0.014 mg/L, respectively. Furthermore, the enhancement factor (EF) of the substrate to 4,4'-thioaniline is up to 2.7 × 107. Besides, the substrate can realize practical SERS determination of trace 4,4-thioaniline in cosmetics and nitrofurantoin in fish feed and aquatic samples. The recoveries were varied from 71.6% to 103.6% for 4,4-thioaniline in hair dyes and 81.9% to 116.3% for nitrofurantoin in fish feed and aquatic samples, respectively. Such a robust and efficient MSPE SERS substrate possesses great potential in rapid detection (within 15 min) for a practical sample, and it also provides a methodology for the preparation of other HNTs-based composites.

Abstract:A bimetallic nanoparticles modified halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) hybrid was prepared by embedding AgNPs and modifying AuNPs on the inner or outer wall of dopamine-modified HNTs (DHNTs) in sequence. The resulting bimetallic AgNPs@DHNTs-AuNPs hybrid as surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate exhibited improved enhancement ability over monometallic AgNPs@DHNTs, and DHNTs-AuNPs substrates, with intensity ratios of about 48:1:9 (crystal violet) and 11:1:2 (p-phenylenediamine). The giant SERS effect of AgNPs@DHNTs-AuNPs substrate is probably attributed to the synergetic enhancement of the electromagnetic field (Au/Ag), optical plasmon force, molecular enrichment (HNTs), and charge transfer (NPs-dopamine-molecules). The sensitive and reproductive AgNPs@DHNTs-AuNPs substrate was applied for SERS determination of adenine with a linear range of 0.010-0.50 mg·L-1 and a detection limit of 2.2 μg·L-1. The SERS method enables the rapid determination of adenine in fish, chicken kidney and heart, and serum samples, with recoveries of 83.5-121.6% and relative standard deviations of 2.5-7.9%. The SERS substrate has high value for rapid analysis of food and biomarker determinations.
