Abstract:It is crucially important to focus conductive heat in an efficient way, which has received much attention in energy science (say, solar cells), but is still far from being satisfactory due to the diffusive (divergent) nature of the heat. By developing a theory with hybrid transformations (rotation and stretch-compression), here we provide theoretical and experimental evidences for a type of thermal metamaterial called thermal converger. The converger is capable of convergently conducting heat in contrast to the known divergent behavior of heat diffusion, thus yielding a large heating region with high temperatures close to the heat source (high efficiency). The thermal converger further allows us to design a thermal grating—a thermal counterpart of optical grating. This work has relevance to heat focus with high efficiency, and it offers guidance both for efficient heat transfer and for designing thermal-converger-like metamaterials in other fields, such as electrics/magnetics, electromagnetics/optics, acoustics, and particle diffusion.

Abstract:For macroscopically manipulating heat flow at will, thermal metamaterials have opened a practical way, which possesses a single function, such as either cloaking or concentrating the flow of heat even though environmental temperature varies. By developing a theory of transformation heat transfer for multiple functions, here we introduce the concept of intelligent thermal metamaterials with a dual function, which is in contrast to the existing thermal metamaterials with single functions. By assembling homogeneous isotropic materials and shape-memory alloys, we experimentally fabricate a kind of intelligent thermal metamaterials, which can automatically change from a cloak (or concentrator) to a concentrator (or cloak) when the environmental temperature changes. This work paves an efficient way for a controllable gradient of heat, and also provides guidance both for arbitrarily manipulating the flow of heat and for efficiently designing similar intelligent metamaterials in other fields.

Abstract:Willis coupling generically stems from bianisotropy or chirality in wave systems. Nevertheless, those schemes are naturally unavailable in diffusion systems described by a single constitutive relation governed by the Fourier law. Here, we report spatiotemporal diffusive metamaterials by modulating thermal conductivity and mass density in heat transfer. The Fourier law should be modified after homogenizing spatiotemporal parameters, featuring thermal Willis coupling between heat flux and temperature change rate. Thermal Willis coupling drives asymmetric heat diffusion, and the diffusion direction is reversible at a critical point determined by the degree of spatiotemporal modulation. Moreover, thermal Willis coupling stands robustly even when only thermal conductivity is modulated. These results may have potential applications for directional diffusion and offer insights into asymmetric manipulation of nonequilibrium mass and energy transfer.

Abstract:Achieving effective control of thermal and mechanical distributions has been a long-standing goal, and metamaterials have emerged as a crucial tool for customizing functional structures to manipulate these physical fields. However, existing design paradigms do not apply to thermal-mechanical metamaterials that operate on thermal and mechanical fields simultaneously and independently. First, Due to the different geometric requirements imposed by the thermal and mechanical fields on the unit cells, there is a conflict between functional coupling and design coupling, which limits the design of thermal-mechanical metamaterials. Second, the fact that continuum mechanical equations do not remain invariant under general coordinate transformations hinders the application of conventional theories. Additionally, balancing minimal design costs, manufacturability, and optimal functionality remains a significant challenge. Here, we propose a global data-driven design method using Bayesian hyperparameter optimization. This method creates thermal-mechanical metamaterials from a large, pre-computed unit cell database. Our flexible method allows designing thermal-mechanical metamaterials with various functional combinations (e.g., cloaks, concentrators, and rotators) and shapes. Compared to traditional solutions, this approach balances manufacturability and functionality while offering unparalleled universality and low design costs. Experimental measurements validate the effectiveness of our method. Our approach can rapidly respond to new design scenarios and address design challenges related to the multi-physical effects.

Abstract:Non-Hermitian wave system has attracted intense attentions in the past decade since it reveals interesting physics and generates various counterintuitive effects. However, in the diffusive system that is inherently non-Hermitian with natural dissipation, the robust control of heat flow is hitherto still a challenge. Here we introduce the skin effect into diffusive systems. Different from the skin effect in wave systems, where asymmetric couplings were enabled by dynamic modulations or judicious gain/loss engineering, asymmetric couplings of the temperature fields in diffusive systems can be realized by directly contacted metamaterial channels. Topological heat funneling is further presented, where the temperature field automatically concentrates towards a designated position and shows a strong immunity against the defects. Our work indicates that the diffusive system can provide a distinctive platform for exploring non-Hermitian physics as well as thermal topology. Non-Hermitian systems can house a range of unusual physical phenomena such as the skin-effect which has been typically observed in optical lattices and electrical circuits. Here, the authors show the non-Hermitian skin effect in thermal transport, demonstrating that the topologically protected heat flow can be realized by using thermal metamaterials.

Abstract:Controlling heat transfer with artificial functional materials has been a promising route towards the efficient and smart utilization of thermal energy in modern society. At the macroscopic scale, thermal metamaterials have demonstrated versatile functionalities in manipulating thermal conduction. One major method is the effective medium theory, which provides a reliable approximation for the material parameters of the composite. Although most of thermal metamaterials use static components, recent devices with integrated moving parts are attracting great interest thanks to their high efficiency and flexibility. However, the effective medium theory for thermal scattering off such devices has not been well established, due to the fundamental difference between thermal convection and conduction. Here, we provide a thorough study on heat transfer through mechanically rotating structures. It is shown that the effective thermal conductivity of a rotating structure can be rigorously described in a complex plane. The analytical expressions of the effective thermal conductivity for structures with rotating multiple layers are formulated, which explicitly capture their influences on the surrounding temperature field. We validate the theory and numerically demonstrate the rotated and unrotated temperature distributions generated around a single structure. our theory is expected to become a design recipe for novel thermal metamaterials and meta-devices. Abstract:For manipulating heat flow efficiently, recently we established a theory of temperature-dependent transformation thermotics which holds for steady-state cases. Here, we develop the theory to unsteady-state cases by considering the generalized Fourier's law for transient thermal conduction. As a result, we are allowed to propose a new class of intelligent thermal metamaterial — switchable concentrator, which is made of inhomogeneous anisotropic materials. When environmental temperature is below or above a critical value, the concentrator is automatically switched on, namely, it helps to focus heat flux in a specific region. However, the focusing does not affect the distribution pattern of temperature outside the concentrator. We also perform finite-element simulations to confirm the switching effect according to the effective medium theory by assembling homogeneous isotropic materials, which bring more convenience for experimental fabrication than inhomogeneous anisotropic materials. This work may help to figure out new intelligent thermal devices, which provide more flexibility in controlling heat flow, and it may also be useful in other fields that are sensitive to temperature gradient, such as the Seebeck effect.

Abstract:How to freely control heat transfer at macroscopic scale is always a dream of human beings due to important applications in thermal protection, detection, and control/management. Within the past decade (2008-2018), thermal metamaterials have been shown as a promising candidate for this purpose. Here, I review the up-to-date research progress in the field, which mainly includes the following novel phenomena and functional devices together with initial applications: thermal cloak, concentrator, dual function, thermal rotator, macroscopic thermal diode, thermal camouflage, thermal transparency, thermal crystal, energy-free thermostat, abnormal conduction in networks, convection cloak/concentrator/camouflage, and thermal radiation cooling. The underlying mechanisms are presented according to six categories of theory: transformation thermotics, direct solution of Laplace equation, energy band theory, phase transition theory, transformation thermal convection, and thermal radiation theory. I also introduce and comment their prospects from fundamental research to industrial applications. This review has relevance to novel controls of heat transfer (conduction, convection, and radiation) by using artificial structures or devices.

Abstract:The demand for sophisticated tools and approaches in heat management and control has triggered the fast development of fields that include conductive thermal metamaterials, nanophononics, and far-field and near-field radiative thermal management. In this Review, we offer a unified perspective on the control of heat transfer, summarizing complementary paradigms towards the manipulation of physical parameters and the realization of unprecedented phenomena in heat transfer using artificial structures. The Review is divided into three parts that focus on the three main categories of heat flow control. Thermal conduction and radiation, at both the macroscale and microscale, are emphasized in the first and second parts. The third part discusses efforts to actively introduce heat sources or tune the material parameters with multiphysical effects in conduction, radiation and convection. We conclude by analysing the challenges in this research area and surveying new possible directions, in particular topological thermal effects, heat waves and quantum thermal effects.

Abstract:Thermal metamaterials have amazing properties in heat transfer beyond naturally occurring materials owing to their well-designed artificial structures. The idea of thermal metamaterial has completely subverted the design of thermal functional devices and makes it possible to manipulate heat flow at will. In this perspective, we review the up-to-date progress of thermal metamaterials starting from 2008. We focus on both the key theoretical fundamentals and techniques for applications and give a perspective of scale-based classification on thermal metamaterials' theories and applications. We also discuss the junction between macroscale and microscale design methods and propose some prospects for the future trend of this field.

Abstract:Classical thermodynamics often helps to passively describe macroscopic heat phenomena of natural systems, which means people almost cannot change the heat phenomena, but understand them according to the four thermodynamic laws. In contrast, thermal metamaterials, together with the governing theories, make it possible to actively manipulate macroscopic heat phenomena of artificial systems, which enables people to change the heat phenomena at will. Such metamaterials or metamaterial-based devices refer to those artificial structures that yield novel functions in controlling heat transfer. Since the concept of thermal cloak was proposed in 2008, this field has been developed rapidly with fruitful research results, which range from both theoretical models and experimental techniques in scientific research to practical applications in industry, such as radiative cooling and infrared camouflage. In this review, we comb through the research history of thermal metamaterials, and present novel functions and their associated theories in four areas. Such theories include both transformation theories and their extended theories, which are called theoretical thermotics for convenience. The four areas are classified according to the different ways of heat transfer, namely, heat conduction, heat conduction–convection, heat conduction–radiation, and heat conduction–convection–radiation. The corresponding experiments and applications are also introduced. At last, we provide our views on future opportunities and challenges in thermotics of metamaterials.

Abstract:We explore the near-field radiative thermal energy transfer properties of hyperbolic metamaterials. The presence of unique electromagnetic states in a broad bandwidth leads to super-planckian thermal energy transfer between metamaterials separated by a nano-gap. We consider practical phonon-polaritonic metamaterials for thermal engineering in the mid-infrared range and show that the effect exists in spite of the losses, absorption and finite unit cell size. For thermophotovoltaic energy conversion applications requiring energy transfer in the near-infrared range we introduce high temperature hyperbolic metamaterials based on plasmonic materials with a high melting point. Our work paves the way for practical high temperature radiative thermal energy transfer applications of hyperbolic metamaterials.
Tunable liquid–solid hybrid thermal metamaterials with a topology transition

Abstract:Thermal metamaterials provide rich control of heat transport which is becoming the foundation of cutting-edge applications ranging from chip cooling to biomedical. However, due to the fundamental laws of physics, the manipulation of heat is much more constrained in conventional thermal metamaterials where effective heat conduction with Onsager reciprocity dominates. Here, through the inclusion of thermal convection and breaking the Onsager reciprocity, we unveil a regime in thermal metamaterials and transformation thermotics that goes beyond effective heat conduction. By designing a liquid–solid hybrid thermal metamaterial, we demonstrate a continuous switch from thermal cloaking to thermal concentration in one device with external tuning. Underlying such a switch is a topology transition in the virtual space of the thermotic transformation which is achieved by tuning the liquid flow via external control. These findings illustrate the extraordinary heat transport in complex multicomponent thermal metamaterials and pave the way toward an unprecedented regime of heat manipulation.

Abstract:Heat transportation is one of the most ubiquitous phenomenon in the mother nature. Manipulating heat flow at will is of tremendous value in industry, civil life and even military. It would be a common sense that in different materials thermal properties are different. According to this knowledge people may design thermal materials to control heat conduction. One of the most common and successful example is blanket, which has been invented for thousands of years to keep us warm in cold days and keep icecream cool in summer. However, those great inventions are not powerful enough to manipulate heat flow at will. So there are still a lot of demands for designing the so-called metamaterials which have special properties that should not exist in nature.In 2006, Leonhardt and Pendry's research group (Pendry, Schurig and Smith) independently proposed a type of optical metamaterial which is also called invisible cloak. This device is well known for bending light around an object to make it invisible. Such a significant progress soon enlightened a lot of scientists in different aspects since it offers a powerful approach to design metamaterials. The principle of invisible cloak, which is concluded as transformation optics has been applied to light waves, acoustic, seismic, elastic waves, hydrodynamics and even matter waves as they all satisfy with wave equation.Although the conduction equation which governs the process of heat conduction is totally different from wave equation, from 2008 to 2012, Fan's group and Guenneau's group established the theoretical system of transformation thermotics. Since then, many thermal metamaterials with novel thermal properties have been figured out. Therefore, a boom in transformation thermotics and thermal metamaterials has begun.In this article, we will introduce some most recent achievements in this field, including novel thermal devices, simplified experimental method, macro thermal diode based on temperature dependent transformation thermotics, and the important role that soft matters play in the experimental confirmations of thermal metamaterials.These works pave the developments in transformation mapping theory and can surely inspire more designs of thermal metamaterials. What is more, some approaches proposed in this article provide more flexibility in controlling heat flow, and it may also be useful in other fields that are sensitive to temperature gradient, such as the Seebeck effect and many other domains where transformation theory is valid.
Non-Hermitian physics and topological phenomena in convective thermal metamaterials

Abstract:Non-Hermitian physics and topological phenomena are two hot topics attracted much attention in condensed matter physics and artificial metamaterials. Thermal metamaterials are one type of metamaterials that can manipulate heat on one's own. Recently, it has been found that non-Hermitian physics and topological phenomena can be implemented in purely diffusive systems. However, conduction alone is not omnipotent due to the missing of degrees of freedom. Heat convection, accompanying with conduction, is capable of realizing a large number of phases. In this review, we will present some important works on non-Hermitian and topological convective thermal metamaterials. In non-Hermitian physics, we will first discuss the implementation of exceptional point (EP) in thermal diffusion, followed by high-order EP and dynamic encirclement of EP. We then discuss two works on the extensions of EP in diffusion systems, namely, the chiral thermal behavior in the vicinity of EP and the Weyl exceptional ring. For topological phases, we will discuss two examples: a one-dimensional topological insulator and a two-dimensional quadrupole topological insulator. Finally, we will make a conclusion and present a promising outlook in this area. Besides the scientific values, non-Hermitian and topological convective thermal metamaterials have great potentials for industrial applications.

Convective Heat Transfer in Porous Materials

Abstract:Thermal convection stands out as an exceptionally efficient thermal transport mechanism, distinctly separate from conduction and radiation. Yet, the inherently elusive nature of fluid motion poses challenges in accurately controlling convective heat flow. While recent innovations have harnessed thermal convection to achieve effective thermal conductivity, fusing thermal convection in liquids and thermal conduction in solids together to form hybrid thermal metamaterials is still challenging. In this review, we introduce the latest progress in convective heat transfer. Leveraging the right porous materials as a medium allows for a harmonious balance and synergy between convection and conduction, establishing stable heat and fluid flows. This paves the way for the innovative advancements in transformation thermotics. These findings demonstrate the remarkable tunability of convective heat transport in complex multicomponent thermal metamaterials.

Abstract:<p>The emerging thermal metamaterials and metadevices demonstrate significant potential to transform thermal conduction. However, the thermal conductivities of existing devices are all restricted at fixed values if the configuration or constituent materials are static. Thermal convection provides an additional tool to boost and flexibly modify the heat transfer in moving matter, but it is essentially distinct from thermal conduction since the Onsager reciprocity is generally broken in the former but preserved in the latter. Therefore, it is difficult to use convective components for sophisticated control of conductive heat. Here, it is shown that a convective system can be made undistinguishable from a conductive one in principle, by discovering and operating on the reciprocal line of mechanically rotating systems. The realized thermal metadevice can thus mimic a solid‐like material whose thermal conductivity dynamically covers a wide range. It offers great possibilities of real‐time smooth control over heat transfer for broad applications.</p>

Abstract:Since the advent of transformation optics and scattering cancelling technology, a plethora of unprecedented metamaterials, especially invisibility cloaks, have been successfully demonstrated in various communities, e.g., optics, acoustics, elastic mechanics, dc electric field, dc magnetic field, and thermotics. A long-held captivation is that transformation-optic metamaterials of anisotropic or noncentrosymmetric geometry (e.g., ellipsoids) commonly come along with parameter approximation/simplification or directional functions. Here, a synthetic paradigm with strictly full parameters and omnidirectionality is reported simultaneously to address this long-held issue for molding heat flow and experimentally demonstrate a series of noncentrosymmetric thermal metadevices. It changes the usual perception that transformation thermotic/dc/acoustic metamaterials are just a direct and simplified derivatives of the transformation-optic counterpart. Instead, the proposed methodology solves an intriguingly important and challenging problem that is not possibly achievable for transformation-optic metamaterials. The approach is rigorous, exact, robust, and yet elegantly facile, which may open a new avenue to manipulating the Laplacian and wave-dynamic fields in ways previously inconceivable.
Thermal Metamaterials for Temperature Maintenance: From Advances in Heat Conduction to Future Convection Prospects

Abstract:Maintaining temperature is crucial in both daily life and industrial settings, ensuring human comfort and device functionality. In the quest for energy conservation and emission reduction, several contemporary passive temperature control technologies have emerged, including phase change temperature control, shape memory alloys, solar thermal utilization, sky radiation cooling, and heat pipe systems. However, there is a pressing need for more quantitative methods to further optimize temperature maintenance. With advancements in theoretical thermotics and the emergence of thermal metamaterials, it is clear that temperature fields can be precisely manipulated by fine-tuning thermal and structural parameters. This review introduces three innovative devices: the energy-free thermostat, the negative-energy thermostat, and the multi-temperature maintenance container. All are grounded in the principles of thermal metamaterials and primarily operate under conduction heat transfer conditions. When compared with traditional technologies, the unparalleled efficacy of thermal metamaterials in temperature management is evident. Moreover, brief prospects present strategies to improve temperature maintenance under convection heat transfer, thus expanding the application spectrum of thermal metamaterials. This review concludes by spotlighting the evolution and interplay of the aforementioned three devices, marking the progression of thermal metamaterials from theoretical ideas to tangible engineering solutions. These insights not only bridge the gap between applied physics and engineering but also underscore the practical potential of thermal metamaterials.
