Abstract:A series of organometallic copper complexes in formal oxidation states ranging from +1 to +3 have been characterized by a combination of Cu K-edge X-ray absorption (XAS) and Cu Kβ valence-to-core X-ray emission spectroscopies (VtC XES). Each formal oxidation state exhibits distinctly different XAS and VtC XES transition energies due to the differences in the Cu Zeff, concomitant with changes in physical oxidation state from +1 to +2 to +3. Herein, we demonstrate the sensitivity of XAS and VtC XES to the physical oxidation states of a series of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligated organocopper complexes. We then extend these methods to the study of the [Cu(CF3)4]- ion. Complemented by computational methods, the observed spectral transitions are correlated with the electronic structure of the complexes and the Cu Zeff. These calculations demonstrate that a contraction of the Cu 1s orbitals to deeper binding energy upon oxidation of the Cu center manifests spectroscopically as a stepped increase in the energy of both XAS and Kβ2,5 emission features with increasing formal oxidation state within the [Cun+(NHC2)]n+ series. The newly synthesized Cu(III) cation [CuIII(NHC4)]3+ exhibits spectroscopic features and an electronic structure remarkably similar to [Cu(CF3)4]-, supporting a physical oxidation state assignment of low-spin d8 Cu(III) for [Cu(CF3)4]-. Combining XAS and VtC XES further demonstrates the necessity of combining multiple spectroscopies when investigating the electronic structures of highly covalent copper complexes, providing a template for future investigations into both synthetic and biological metal centers.

Abstract:By slightly changing the synthetic conditions, we have prepared two closely related linear tetranuclear CuII complexes with the symmetrical ONNO donor tetradentate Schiff-base ligand [H2L=(OH)C6H4(CH3)CN(CH2)3NC(CH3)C6H4(OH)] and with azide ions. These two distinctly coloured crystalline products were characterized by elemental analysis, IR and UV–Vis spectroscopy, CV, EPR spectra and variable temperature magnetic measurements. Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies of the green [Cu4(μ-L)2(μ1,1-N3)2(N3)2] (1) and the red [Cu4(μ-L)2(μ1,1-N3)2(N3)2(H2O)2] (2) crystals show that the coordination environment of the two μ-phenoxo and μ1,1-azido bridged isomorphous tetranuclear CuII complexes are slightly different. Thus, both complexes are formed by very similar building units, although with a significant variation in the bridging Cu–O(phenoxo)–Cu and Cu–N(azido)–Cu bond angles. The consequences of these structural variations on the magnetic properties have been investigated from both the experimental and theoretical points of view by variable temperature magnetic measurements and DFT calculations.
Three Distinct Oxidation States (II/II, II/III, and III/III) of Diorganocopper Complexes

Abstract:In this report, we present a structurally and spectroscopically characterized diorganocopper system in three distinct oxidation states: [(CuCuII)-Cu-II] (1), [(CuCuIII)-Cu-II] (2), and [(CuCuIII)-Cu-III] (3). These states are stabilized by a macrocyclic ligand scaffold featuring two square-planar coordination {(C2N2pyrazole)-N-NHC}. We have analyzed the geometric and electronic structures using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and multiple spectroscopic methods including nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), UV-vis, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopies, in combination with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Remarkably, this study provides a structural determination of mixed-valence diorganocopper(II,III) complex 2, which is at the borderline between valence-trapped or charge-localized class I systems and charge moderately delocalized class II systems in Robin and Day classification. These findings enhance our understanding of the systematic structural and electronic changes that occur in diorganocopper complexes in response to redox transformations.

Abstract:Reductive elimination around Cu(III) atom arises an increasing attention, since this organometallic pathway has been often proposed in a range of Cu-based reactions. However, due to limited organocopper(III) compounds with well-defined structures, this elementary reaction still remains an extremely challenging issue. In this review, structurally well-defined organocopper(III) compounds are mainly divided into three classes based on their ligands: perfluoromethyl Cu(III) compounds, macrocyclic ligand-based aryl-Cu(III) compounds, and spiro organocopper(III) compounds chelated by bidentate ligands. The majority of organocopper(III) compounds display the typical square planar geometry. There also exist a few penta-coordinated organocopper(III) complexes, which share a weak apical Cu-L bond. In order to form a cis Cu(III)-C and Cu(III)-Nu bonding geometry required for reductive elimination, the re-arrangement of coordination modes around tetra-coordinated Cu(III) atoms is necessary. For the aryl-Cu(III) cationic complexes with one Cu(III)-C bond, the re-arrangement is triggered by the coordination of the fifth ligand (solvent or nucleophiles), while for the tetra-carbon-coordinated organocuprate(III) compounds, the process might be realized via the cleavage of one Cu(III)-C bond by attack of electrophiles. Stoichiometric and catalytic reactions involving well-defined organocopper(III) compounds to form C-C or C-heteroatom bonds are discussed to support their intermediacy.

Abstract:The interactions of the d electrons of transition-metal aqua ions with the solvent are usually divided in short-range electronic interactions with ligand water molecules and long-range electrostatic interactions with molecules beyond the first coordination shell. This is the rationale behind the cluster continuum and QM/MM methods developed for the computation of the redox potentials. In the density functional theory based molecular dynamics (DFTMD) method, the electronic states of the complex are also allowed to mix with the extended band states of the solvent. Returning to the Cu(+) and Ag(+) oxidation reaction, which has been the subject of DFTMD simulation before, we show that coupling to the valence band states of water is greatly enhanced by the band gap error in the density functional approximation commonly used in DFTMD (the generalized gradient approximation). This effect is analyzed by viewing the solvent as a wide gap oxide and the redox active ions as electronic defects. The errors can be reduced significantly by application of hybrid functionals containing a fraction of Hartree-Fock exchange. These calculations make use of recent progress in DFTMD technology, enabling us to include sp core polarization and Hartree-Fock exchange in condensed-phase model systems.
Organocopper(III) Spiro Complexes: Synthesis, Structural Characterization, and Redox Transformation

Abstract:Reductive elimination of Cu(III) intermediates is often proposed as a key step in many copper-catalyzed or -mediated formation of C-C or C-heteroatom bonds. However, there still lacks concrete evidence on this key step, mainly because Cu(III) complexes are usually too unstable to be isolated and structurally characterized. In this work, novel organocopper(III) spiro complexes and their analogous organocopper(I) spiro complexes were synthesized and structurally characterized. Single-crystal X-ray structural analysis revealed that the spiro Cu(III) atom adopted a distorted square-planar geometry while its corresponding spiro Cu(I) atom was tetrahedrally coordinated. A redox transformation between these spiro Cu(I) and Cu(III) complexes was experimentally observed by reacting with reductants or oxidants, respectively. As concrete evidence, the organocopper(III) spiro compounds were found to form C-C bonds intramolecularly via reductive elimination.
Theoretical modelling of tripodal CuN3 and CuN4 cuprous complexes interacting with O2, CO or CH3CN

Abstract:Dioxygen binding at copper enzymatic sites is a fundamental aspect of the catalytic activity observed in many biological systems such as the monooxygenases, especially peptidylglycine alpha-hydroxylating monooxygenase (PHM), in which two mononuclear Cu(I) sites are involved. Biomimetic models have been developed: dipods, tripods, and, more recently, functionalized calixarenes. The modelling of calixarene systems, although not unreachable for theory yet, requires, however, a number of preliminary investigations to ensure proper calibrations if relevant description of the metal-ligand interaction at the hybrid quantum mechanical/molecular mechanics levels of theory is the aim. In this paper, we report quantum chemistry investigations on a coherent series of representative cuprous tripodal species characterized by (1) monodentate ligands [Cu(ImH)3]+ (where ImH is imidazole), [Cu(MeNH2)3]+ and [Cu(MeNH2)4]+ , (2) neutral tripodal ligands [CuCH(ImH)3]+, [Cu(tren)]+ [where tren is tris(2-aminoethyl)amine], and [Cu(trenMe3)]+ [where trenMe3 is tris(2-methylaminoethyl)amine] and (3) a hydrido-tris(pyrazolyl)borate [CuBH(Pyra)3]. The structures of these complexes, the coordination mode (eta(2) side-on or eta(1) end-on) of O2 to Cu(I) and the charge transfer from the metal to dioxygen have been computed. For some systems, the coordination by CH3CN and CO is also reported. Beyond results relative to structural properties, an interesting feature is that it is possible to build from computational results only a set of abacuses linking the nu(16O-16O) vibrational frequency of the coordinated O2 molecule to the O-O bond length or to the net charge of the O2 moiety. Such abacuses may help experimentalists in distinguishing between the four possible ways of binding O2 to CuN3 and CuN4 cuprous centres, namely (1) end-on triplet states, (2) side-on triplet states, (3) end-on singlet states and (4) side-on singlet states. These abacuses are extended to three tripods obtained by the substitution of one nitrogen atom by either a phosphorus or a sulphur atom. Moreover, it is shown that any factor favouring pyramidalization at copper favours charge transfer and thus coordination of the incoming O2 moiety. All these allow insight into the coordination mode of O2 and into the charge transfer from Cu(I) in site Cu(M) of PHM.

Abstract:Many copper(I) complexes with aliphatic amine ligands have a strong tendency to disproportionate to copper(II) and elemental copper in solution at higher concentrations, making it difficult to isolate them and to study their reactivity. A series of copper(I) complexes with ligands based on tridentate N,N,N',N'',N''‐pentamethldiethylenetriamine (Me5dien) were synthesized that included terminal olefinic and aromatic groups. It could be shown that the olefinic side arms stabilized some of the copper(I) complexes. Whether and how strongly the complexes were stabilized depended on the position and length of the olefinic sidearm. Additionally, the reactivity of the copper(I) complexes towards dioxygen was investigated.

Abstract:One of the most fundamental aspects of cluster science is to understand the structural evolution at the atomic scale. In this connection, here we report a comprehensive study of the atomic and electronic structures of (CuO) n clusters for n=1 to 12 using DFT based formalisms. Both plane wave based pseudo-potential approach and LCAO-MO based method have been employed to obtain the ground state geometries of neutral, cation and anions of copper oxide clusters. The results reveal that neutral copper oxide cluster favors planar ring structure upto heptamer and from octamer onwards they adopt three-dimensional motif with (CuO) 9 and (CuO)12 forming a barrel shaped layered structure. Detailed electronic structure analysis reveals that the transition of atomic structure from 2D to 3D is guided by the energy balance of the Cu-O (d-p) and Cu-Cu (d-d) bonds. The removal of one electron from the cluster (cation) results in slightly stretched bonds while addition of one electron (anions) showed compression in the overall geometries. The thermodynamic and electronic stability of these clusters has been analyzed by estimating their binding energy, ionization energy and electron affinity as a function of size. Remarkably, among these clusters octamer (CuO) 8 and dodecamer (CuO) 12 show higher binding energy and electron affinity (~ 6.5 eV) with lower ionization energy (5.5-6.0 eV). This unique feature of octamer and dodecamer indicates that they are very promising candidates for both oxidizing as well as reducing agent in different important chemical reactions.

Abstract:The recent development of new synthesis techniques has allowed the production of monodisperse metal clusters composed of a few atoms. Follow-up experimental spectroscopic characterization has indicated the stability of these atomic metal clusters (AMCs). Despite the common assumption that the occurrence of an irreversible oxidation becomes more likely as the cluster size decreases, its quenching and reversible nature has been experimentally identified in the particular case of Cu5 clusters, making them paradigmatic. This work aims to address the influence of aggregation and the effects of a chemically inert carbon-based support on the oxidation of AMCs, considering the case of Cu5 as a model system. For this purpose, we present an extended first-principles study of the oxidation of Cu5-Cu5 and circumpyrene-supported Cu5, comparing it with that of unsupported Cu5, and combine dispersion-corrected density-functionals, first principles thermochemistry, and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations within an adiabatic approach. Our results indicate that a molecular chemisorption/desorption model is sensible upon consideration of aggregation and support effects in such a way that the predicted (p-T)-phase diagrams do not differ significantly from those obtained for unsupported Cu5. We also provide insights into the decoupling of the Cu5-Cu5 dimer into Cu5 sub-units through activated fluxional rotational motion, upon heating, as well as the adsorption of multiple O2 molecules at high oxygen gas pressures. Furthermore, numerical evidence shows the likelihood of a support-mediated mechanism leading to the dissociation of chemisorbed peroxo O22- species, delivering states with very similar energies to those characterized by molecular chemisorption. A Boltzmann-weighted average of the free energies of formation is computed as well, coming up with a diagram of the dominant copper oxidation states as a function of temperature and oxygen gas pressure.

Abstract:Hydrogen bonds involving the oxygen atoms of intermediates that result from copper-mediated O2 activation play a key role for controlling the reactivity of Cux/O2 active sites in metalloenzymes and synthetic model complexes. However, structural insight into H-bonding in such transient species as well as thermodynamic information about proton transfer to or from the O2-derived ligands is scarce. Here we present a detailed study of the reversible interconversion of a μ1,2-peroxodicopper(II) complex ([1]+) and its μ1,1-hydroperoxo congener ([2]+) via (de)protonation, including the isolation and structural characterization of several H-bond donor (HBD) adducts of [1]+ and the determination of binding constants. For one of these adducts a temperature-dependent μ1,2-peroxo/μ1,1-hydroperoxo equilibrium associated with reversible H+-translocation is observed, its thermodynamics investigated experimentally and computationally, and effects of H-bonding on spectroscopic parameters of the CuII2(μ1,2-O2) species are revealed. DFT calculations allowed to fully map and correlate the trajectories of H+-transfer and μ1,2-peroxo→μ1,1-peroxo rearrangement. These findings enhance our understanding of two key intermediates in bioinspired Cu2/O2 chemistry.

Abstract:The long-term effect of socioeconomic status (SES) and healthcare resources availability (HCA) on breast cancer stage of presentation and mortality rates among patients in Michigan is unclear. Using data from the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) between 1992 and 2009, we calculated annual proportions of late-stage diagnosis and age-adjusted breast cancer mortality rates by race and zip code in Michigan. SES and HCA were defined at the zip-code level. Joinpoint regression was used to compare the Average Annual Percent Change (AAPC) in the median zip-code level percent late stage diagnosis and mortality rate for blacks and whites and for each level of SES and HCA. Between 1992 and 2009, the proportion of late stage diagnosis increased among white women [AAPC = 1.0 (0.4, 1.6)], but was statistically unchanged among black women [AAPC = −0.5 (−1.9, 0.8)]. The breast cancer mortality rate declined among whites [AAPC = −1.3% (−1.8,−0.8)], but remained statistically unchanged among blacks [AAPC = −0.3% (−0.3, 1.0)]. In all SES and HCA area types, disparities in percent late stage between blacks and whites appeared to narrow over time, while the differences in breast cancer mortality rates between blacks and whites appeared to increase over time.
Electron Transfer Kinetics of a Series of Copper Complexes with Tripodal Tetradentate Guanidine Quinolinyl Ligands

Abstract:Copper complexes of tripodal ligands have been used as model systems for electron transfer proteins for decades, displaying a broad range of electron self-exchage rates. We herein report a group of six tripodal tetradentate triarylamine ligands which display a varying number of guaninidine and 2-methylquinolinyl moierties. Their corresponding Cu(I) complexes have been (re)synthesized and studied with regard to their electron transfer properties. While their solid state structures are four-coordinate and display an uncommon umbrella distortion, DFT studies of the Cu(II) systems reveal that they gain an additional ligand in form of a solvent molecule and exhibit a range of possible conformers that likely co-exist in thermal equilibrium. The redox-couples' electron self-exchange rates were analyzed using Marcus theory and vary over four orders of magnitdue which cyclic voltammetry studies suggest to be due to a gated addition-oxidation electron transfer mechanism. This mechanism deviates from previously studied systems, likely due to the structural anomalies of the Cu(I) systems. This demonstrates that the chosen path of tripodal model systems can be influenced by molecular design.

Abstract:Theoretical study of the organic/inorganic hybrid complex [Cu(hfac)2(L)2][PF6]2. Biological interest and various applications in magnetic materials. Antifungal and antibacterial activities evaluated by molecular docking. In the present research, we report a theoretical study of Cu II complex based on TTF ligand [Cu(hfac)2(L)2][PF6]2 (in neutral and oxidized states +1 and +2, of biological interest and various applications in magnetic conducting materials. It is an organic/inorganic hybrid material involving a coordination between a paramagnetic transition metal and a nitrogenous aromatic TTF linked through a covalent transition conjugate bridge. The optimized structures of neutral and oxidized metal transition complexes obtained using the Density Functional Theory (DFT) method are consistent with the experimental results. Several properties including geometrical parameters, Hirshfeld atomic charges, energies of Frontier Molecular Orbitals (FMOs), and energy gap (ΔEgap) between the Highest Occupied Molecular Orbital (HOMO), and the Lowest Unoccupied Molecular Orbital (LUMO) are calculated for optimized complexes. The results reveal that oxidation leads to more stable aromatic systems and reduces the energy gap. The analysis of the charges as well as the distribution of the spin density in the frontier orbitals shows that the oxidation takes place at the ligand level. More precisely the ylidene C3=C4 bond is the most sensitive molecular part to oxidation. A significant degeneracy of molecular orbitals is also observed. No metallic contribution in the HOMO of Cu complex reveals a strong electronic localization at the end of the chain, and, at the same time a delocalization along the chain, this is also in favor of a good conductivity and excellent catalytic activity of this compounds.

Abstract:The genetic stability of living cells is continually threatened by endogenous reactive oxygen species and other genotoxic molecules. Of particular threat are the thousands of single-strand breaks that arise in each cell every day. If left unrepaired, such breaks can give rise to potentially clastogenic or lethal chromosomal double-strand breaks. This article summarizes our current understanding of how mammalian cells detect and repair single strand breaks, and provides insights into novel polypeptide components of this process.
Redox Chemistry of "Neglected Copper‐Tris" Complex in Presence of Ascorbic Acid and O2

Abstract:The redox chemistry of CuII−Tris with H2A/O2 is passing through three intermediates such as initially yielding a yellow precipitate, then a green solution, and finally a cyan solution with progress on time where yellow to green transformation is Cu‐based but green to cyan transformation is ligand (H2A)‐ as well as Cu‐based oxidation. Sometimes unusual redox chemistry and modulation of enzyme activity Cu‐proteins can be encountered by the presence of a trace amount of Cu−Tris interaction (Tris‐(hydroxymethyl) aminomethane) during vitro studies. Herein, we addressed a redox chemistry of CuII−Tris with variable stoichiometric ratios in the presence of ascorbic acid (H2A) and O2. The redox chemistry of Bs3 (Cu : Tris; 1 : 3) with H2A/O2 was passed through several intermediates with progress on time yielding initially yellow precipitate, (Yp3), then green solution, (Gs3) and finally cyan solution (Cs3). The UV‐Vis spectra of Bs3, Gs3 and Cs3 displayed peaks at 640, 690 and 710 nm respectively suggesting CuII. The redox potential of CuII/CuI in Bs3, Gs3 and Cs3 were −0.18 V, −0.15 V and −0.19 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) respectively. The EPR spectrum of Bs3 showed an axial signal with g∥,⊥=2.483/2.105&A∥=160×10−4 cm−1 whereas Gs3 and Cs3 showed rhombic signal with g1,2,3=2.302/2.063/2.018&A∥=177×10−4 cm−1 and g1,2,3=2.274/2.064/2.016&A∥=164×10−4 cm−1 respectively suggesting a distorted tetragonal geometry. ESI−MS data indicated the probable composition of Bs2‐Bs5, Gs3 and Cs3 in solution. Integration of all spectroscopies data demonstrated the probable composition and redox mechanism.

Abstract:Copper chalcogenide nanoclusters (Cu-S/Se/Te NCs) are a broad and diverse class of atomically precise nanomaterials that have historically been studied for potential applications in luminescent devices and sensors, and for their beautiful, mineral-like crystal structures. By the "cluster-surface" analogy, Cu-S/Se NCs are prime candidates for the development of nanoscale multimetallic catalysts with atomic precision. However, the majority of studies conducted to date have focused exclusively on their solid-state structures and physical properties, leaving open questions as to their solution stability, dynamics, and reactivity. Herein, we report the first detailed interrogation of solution structure, dynamics, electrochemistry, and decomposition of Cu-S NCs. Specifically, we report the detailed NMR spectroscopy, diffusion-ordered spectroscopy, MALDI mass spectrometry, electrochemical and stoichiometric redox reactivity studies, and DFT studies of a series of [Cu12S6] clusters with labile Cu-S bonds supported by monodentate phosphines and ditopic bis(diphenylphosphino)alkane ligands PPh2R (R = Et, -(CH2)5-, -(CH2)8-). We find that the ligand binding topology dictates the extent of speciation in solution, with complete stability being afforded by the longer octane chelate in dppo (1,8-bis(diphenylphosphino)octane) according to 1H and DOSY NMR and MALDI-MS studies. Furthermore, a combined electrochemical and computational investigation of [Cu12S6(dppo)4] reveals that the intact [Cu12S6] core undergoes a quasireversible one-electron oxidation at mild applied potentials ([Cu12S6]0/+: -0.50 V vs. Fc0/+). In contrast, prolonged air exposure or treatment with chemical oxidants results in cluster degradation with S atom extrusion as phosphine sulfide byproducts. This work adds critical new dimensions to the stabilization and study of atomically precise metal chalcogenide NCs with labile M-S/Se bonds, and demonstrates both progress and challenges in controlling the solution behaviour and redox chemistry of phosphine-supported copper chalcogenide nanoclusters.

Abstract:Supramolecular Cu(II) complexes were prepared from two trifunctional β-diketone ligands. The ligands (CH(3)Si(phacH)(3) and CH(3)Si(phprH)(3), represented by LH(3)) contain three aryl-β-diketone moieties joined by an organosilicon group.
