Abstract:The injudicious use of water and fertilizer to maximize crop yield not only leads to environmental pollution, but also causes enormous economic losses. For this reason, we investigated the effect of nitrogen (N) (N0 (0), N60 (60 kg ha−1), and N120 (120 kg ha−1)) at different irrigation levels (I0 (0), I1200 (budding 600 m3 ha−1 + kernel 600 m3 ha−1), and I1800 (budding 900 m3 ha−1 + kernel 900 m3 ha−1)) on oilseed flax in the Loess Plateau of China in 2019 and 2020. The objective was to establish appropriate irrigation and fertilizer management strategies that enhance the grain yield (GY) of oilseed flax and maximize water and N productivity. The results demonstrated that irrigation and N application and their coupling effects promoted dry matter accumulation (DMA) and non-structural carbohydrate (NSC) synthesis, and increased the GY of oilseed flax. The contents of NSC in various organs of flax were closely related to grain yield and yield components. Higher NSC in stems was conducive to increased sink capacity (effective capsule number per plant (EC) and thousand kernel weight (TKW)), and the coupling of irrigation and N affected GY by promoting NSC synthesis. Higher GY was obtained by the interaction of irrigation and N fertilizer, with the increase rate ranging from 15.84% to 35.40%. Additionally, in the increased yield of oilseed flax, 39.70–78.06%, 14.49–54.11%, and −10.6–24.93% were contributed by the application of irrigation and nitrogen and the interaction of irrigation and nitrogen (I × N), respectively. Irrigation was the main factor for increasing the GY of oilseed flax. In addition, different climatic conditions changed the contribution of irrigation and N and their interaction to yield increase in oilseed flax. Drought and low temperature induced soluble sugar (SS) and starch (ST) synthesis to resist an unfavorable environment, respectively. The structural equation model showed that the key factors to increasing the GY of oilseed flax by irrigation and nitrogen fertilization were the differential increases in DMA, EC, and TKW. The increases in EC and TKW were attributed to the promotion of DMA and NSC synthesis in oilseed flax organs by irrigation, nitrogen fertilization, and their coupling effects. The I1200N60 treatment obtained higher water use efficiency (WUE) and N partial factor productivity (NPFP) due to lower actual evapotranspiration (ETa) and lower N application rate. Therefore, the strategy of 1200 m3 ha−1 irrigation and 60 kg ha−1 N application is recommended for oilseed flax in semi-arid and similar areas to achieve high grain yield and efficient use of resources.

Abstract:A completely random split zone experiment with irrigation as main plots and nitrogen application rate as sub-plots was carried out to examine the optimal water-nitrogen coupling mode for oil flax planting in dryland. There were three irrigation levels, no irrigation (0 m3·hm-2, I0), irrigation at 1200 m3·hm-2(I1200) and at 1800 m3·hm-2(I1800); and three nitrogen application rates, no nitrogen (0 kg N·hm-2, N0), 60 kg·N hm-2(N60) and 120 kg·N hm-2(N120). We investigated nitrogen accumulation content at different growth stages, nitrogen transport characteristics after anthesis, grain yield and nitrogen utilization efficiency of oil flax. Results showed that the coupling effects of water and nitrogen application on nitrogen uptake in different organs, nitrogen accumulation during different growth stages and grain yield of dry land oil flax varied greatly. Under no irrigation, nitrogen application was beneficial to stem nitrogen absorption at anthesis and maturity stages, but 120 kg N·hm-2 inhibited it at different irrigation levels. At the 1200 m3·hm-2(I1200) irrigation level, foliar nitrogen content at anthesis stage increased first and then decreased with increasing nitrogen rates, and N60 increased foliar nitrogen content by 11.0% and 28.9% respectively compared with N0 and N120. At the 1800 m3·hm-2(I1800) irrigation level, nitrogen application increased foliar nitrogen content at maturity stage, with that in N60 and N120 treatments being 39.7% and 26.9% higher than N0, respectively. The effects of water-nitrogen coupling on nitrogen accumulation in different growth stages of oil flax was mainly shown after budding stage. Under the same irrigation level, N60 promoted and N120 inhibited nitrogen accumulation in each stage after budding. Nitrogen application increased nitrogen transport rate and contribution rate of leaves and stems under I1200 and I1800. The coupling of I1800 and N60 significantly increased the number of effective capsules per plant and grain yield of oil flax (6.6%-22.8%), which was a suitable water-nitrogen coupling management mode in this area.
Application of Organic Fertilizers Optimizes Water Consumption Characteristics and Improves Seed Yield of Oilseed Flax in Semi-Arid Areas of the Loess Plateau

Abstract:Organic fertilizers are an important source of nutrients for improving farmland fertility. To explore high-yield, efficient and green production technology for oilseed flax in dryland agricultural areas, a field split plot experiment was conducted in the semi-arid area of the Loess Plateau in northwest China from April to August in 2020 and 2021. The study compared and analyzed the effects of different nutrient sources and their application rates on water consumption characteristics, grain yield and water use efficiency of oilseed flax. The main plots were fertilizer types (sheep manure, chicken manure and chemical fertilizer), while the subplots were fertilizer application rates (sheep manure: S1-12,500 kg·hm−2 and S2-25,000 kg·hm−2; chicken manure: C1-5800 kg·hm−2 and C2-11,600 kg·hm−2; chemical fertilizer: F1-N 112.5 kg·hm−2, P 75 kg·hm−2, K 67.5 kg·hm−2 and F2-N 225 kg·hm−2, P2O5 150 kg·hm−2, K2O 135 kg·hm−2). The results showed that compared with chemical fertilizers, organic fertilizers significantly increased the soil water storage capacity of the 0–160 cm soil layer during the whole growth period of oilseed flax and significantly reduced water consumption. During two growing seasons, the application of 25,000 kg·hm−2 sheep manure significantly reduced water consumption during the seedling-bud period and green fruit period-maturity period of oilseed flax by 16.13% and 23.19% compared with CK, respectively. Thousand-grain weight, yield and water use efficiency were significantly increased by 14.70%, 48.32% and 61.29%, respectively. These results indicate that the application of 25,000 kg·hm−2 sheep manure can significantly increase soil water storage capacity of the 0–160 cm soil layer, reduce water consumption during the whole growth period of oilseed flax and thus improve grain yield and water use efficiency of oilseed flax. It is a suitable fertilization technology for the high-yield, efficient and green production of oilseed flax in the semi-arid areas of northwest Loess Plateau.

Abstract:Available irrigation resources are becoming increasingly scarce in the North China Plain (NCP), and nitrogen-use efficiency of crop production is also relatively low. Thus, it is imperative to improve the water-use efficiency (WUE) and nitrogen fertilizer productivity on the NCP. Here, we conducted a two-year field experiment to explore the effects of different irrigation amounts (S60, 60 mm; S90, 90 mm; S120, 120 mm; S150, 150 mm) and nitrogen application rates (150, 195 and 240 kg ha–1; denoted as N1, N2 and N3, respectively) under micro-sprinkling with water and nitrogen combined on the grain yield (GY), yield components, leaf area index (LAI), flag leaf chlorophyll content, dry matter accumulation (DM), WUE, and nitrogen partial factor productivity (NPFP). The results indicated that the GY and NPFP increased significantly with increasing irrigation amount, but there was no significant difference between S120 and S150; WUE significantly increased first but then decreased with increasing irrigation and S120 achieved the highest WUE. The increase in nitrogen was beneficial to improving the GY and WUE in S60 and S90, while the excessive nitrogen application (N3) significantly reduced the GY and WUE in S120 and S150 compared with those in the N2 treatment. The NPFP significantly decreased with increasing nitrogen rate under the same irrigation treatments. The synchronous increase in spike number (SN) and 1 000-grain weight (TWG) was the main reason for the large increase in GY by micro-sprinkling with increasing irrigation, and the differences in SN and TGW between S120 and S150 were small. Under S60 and S90, the TGW increased with increasing nitrogen application, which enhanced the GY, while N2 achieved the highest TWG in S120 and S150. At the filling stage, the LAI increased with increasing irrigation, and greater amounts of irrigation significantly increased the chlorophyll content in the flag leaf, which was instrumental in increasing DM after anthesis and increasing the TGW. Micro-sprinkling with increased amounts of irrigation or excessive nitrogen application decreased the WUE mainly due to the increase in total water consumption (ET) and the small increase or decrease in GY. Moreover, the increase in irrigation increased the total nitrogen accumulation or contents (TNC) of plants at maturity and reduced the residual nitrate-nitrogen in the soil (SNC), which was conducive to the increase in NPFP, but there was no significant difference in TNC between S120 and S150. Under the same irrigation treatments, an increase in nitrogen application significantly increased the residual SNC and decreased the NPFP. Overall, micro-sprinkling with 120 mm of irrigation and a total nitrogen application of 195 kg ha–1 can lead to increases in GY, WUE and NPFP on the NCP.

Effects of supplemental irrigation on grain yield and water and nitrogen efficiencies of winter wheat in the North China Plain

Abstract:Background: Aiming at unbalanced coordination of irrigation and fertilization of winter wheat in the eastern North China Plain, this study investigated the effect of fertigation on wheat grain yield, grain quality, and water use efficiency (WUE) and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) in seven irrigation and nitrogen (N) fertilization treatments. Under the field conditions, the traditional irrigation and fertilization method (total N amount of 240 kg ha-1 , application of 90 kg ha-1 at sowing irrigation at jointing and anthesis, with topdressing N of 150 kg ha-1 at jointing) was used as the control (CK). There were six fertigation treatments to compare with CK. For the fertigation treatments, the total amount of N application was set to 180 kg ha-1 and 90 kg ha-1 was applied at sowing and the remaining N fertilizer was applied through fertigation. The fertigation treatments included the combination of three fertigation frequencies (S2: at jointing and anthesis; S3: at jointing, anthesis, and filling; S4: at jointing, booting, anthesis, and filling) and two soil water replenishment depths (M1: 0-10 cm; M2: 0-20 cm). The six treatments were S4M2, S4M1, S3M2, S3M1, S2M2, and S2M1. Result: Compared with CK, three and four irrigations (S3 and S4) maintained higher soil and plant analyzer development value and photosynthetic rate after anthesis. These treatments increased soil water extraction while reducing crop water consumption during the whole growing season, promoted the assimilation and translocation of dry matter into the grain after anthesis, and increased the 1000-grain weight. These fertigation treatments also significantly increased WUE and NUE. At the same time, the high grain protein content and grain protein yield were maintained. Compared with the CK, high wheat yield was maintained by S3M1 (drip irrigation fertilizer at the jointing, anthesis, and filling, and the depth of the moisture replenishment is 10 cm). This fertigation treatment significantly increased yield by 7.6%, WUE by 30%, NUE by 41.4%, and partial factor productivity from applied N by 25.8%; grain yield, grain protein content, and grain protein yield also performed well. Conclusion: Consequently, S3M1 treatment was suggested to be a good practice for reducing irrigation water and N input in the eastern North China Plain. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.
Optimizing irrigation and nitrogen application strategies to improve sunflower yield and resource use efficiency in a cold and arid oasis region of Northwest China

Abstract:In arid regions, water scarcity, land degradation and groundwater pollution caused by excessive fertilization are the main constraints to sustainable agricultural production. Optimizing irrigation and fertilizer management regime is an effective means of improving crop water and fertilizer productivity as well as reducing negative impacts on the ecosystem. In order to investigate the effects of different irrigation and nitrogen (N) fertilizer rates on sunflower growth, yield, and water and N use efficiency, and to determine the optimal water and N management strategy, a two-year (2021 and 2022) field experiment with under-mulched drip irrigation was conducted in the Hexi Oasis area of Northwest China. The experiment design comprised three irrigation levels (W1, 55%-65% FC, where FC represents field water capacity; W2, 65%-75% FC; W3, 75%-85% FC) and three N application levels (N1, 120 kg ha-1; N2, 180 kg ha-1; N3, 240 kg ha-1), resulting in a total of nine treatments. The findings indicated that increasing irrigation and N application rates led to improvements in leaf area index (15.39%-66.14%), dry matter accumulation (11.43%-53.15%), water consumption (ET, 1.63%-42.90%) and sunflower yield (6.85%-36.42%), in comparison to the moderate water deficit and low N application (W1N1) treatment. However, excess water and N inputs did not produce greater yield gains and significantly decreased both water use efficiency (WUE) and nitrogen partial factor productivity (NPFP). Additionally, a multiple regression model was developed with ET and N application as explanatory variables and yield, WUE and NPFP as response variables. The results based on the regression model combined with spatial analysis showed that an ET range of 334.3-348.7 mm and N application rate of 160.9-175.3 kg ha-1 achieved an optimal balance between the multiple production objectives: yield, WUE and NPFP. Among the different irrigation and N management strategies we evaluated, we found that W2N2 (65%-75% FC and 180 kg N ha-1) was the most fruitful considering yield, resource use efficiency, etc. This result can serve as a theoretical reference for developing appropriate irrigation and N fertilization regimes for sunflower cultivation in the oasis agricultural area of northwest China.
Appropriate Water and Nitrogen Regulation Promotes Soybean Yield Formation and Improves Water–Nitrogen Use Efficiency

Abstract:To address water scarcity and soil damage in the Hexi Oasis irrigation area of China, a study was conducted on regulating water and nitrogen levels for soybean growth under film drip irrigation over two growing seasons (2020 and 2021). Two irrigation levels were tested: mild deficit (W1, 60–70% of field water capacity, FC) and full irrigation (W2, 70–80% of FC), along with three nitrogen levels: low (N1, 60 kg·ha−1), medium (N2, 120 kg·ha−1), and high (N3, 180 kg·ha−1). The control treatment was no nitrogen with full irrigation (W2N0), totaling seven treatments. Results showed that during both growing seasons, soybean plant height reached its peak at the tympanic ripening stage, while the leaf area index (LAI), net photosynthesis rate (Pn), and transpiration rate (Tr) decreased at the tympanic ripening stage. The highest values for the plant height, LAI, Pn, Tr, yield, and the cost–benefit ratio were observed under the W2N2 treatment, significantly outperforming the W2N0 in all aspects (p < 0.05). Over the two-year period, the plant height and LAI were notably higher by 22.86% and 7.09%, respectively, in the W2N2 treatment compared to the W1N1. Full irrigation under N1 and N2 conditions resulted in an enhanced soybean Pn and Tr. However, under N3 conditions, a deficit-tuned irrigation treatment led to a 15.71% increase in the Pn and a 13.34% increase in the Tr on a two-year average. The W2N2 treatment had the highest yield, with a significant 4.93% increase over the W1N3 treatment on a two-year average. The highest rate of change in yield was observed in W1. The two-year cost–benefit ratio and unilateral water benefit reached their peak values in W2N2 and W1N2, respectively. Water use efficiency (WUE) was lower in N1 but significantly increased by 21.83% on a two-year average in W1N3 compared to W1N2. Additionally, W1 had a 14.21% higher WUE than W2 over two years. N3 had the lowest partial factor productivity of nitrogen, which increased by 17.78% on a two-year average in W2N1 compared to W1N1. All nine indicators related to yield formation and water–nitrogen use efficiency showed a positive correlation (p < 0.05) in this study. The highest composite scores were achieved with the W2N2 treatment in both years using the entropy weight and TOPSIS method. Overall, the W2N2 treatment provides a water and nitrogen combination that enhances soybean water and fertilizer efficiency, making it a promising option for high-yield soybean cultivation with water and nitrogen conservation in the Hexi Oasis irrigation area of China. This study offers valuable insights for achieving efficient soybean production while saving water and reducing nitrogen use.

Interaction Effects of Irrigation and Nitrogen on the Coordination Between Crop Water Productivity and Nitrogen Use Efficiency in Wheat Production on the North China Plain

Abstract:Improving nitrogen use efficiency-yield (NUEyield) and crop water productivity (CWP) simultaneously has been a focus for sustainable wheat production, especially for the North China Plain, which faces challenges with limited water resources and low fertilizer use efficiency. With three-year wheat field experiments with two irrigation levels (rainfed, and irrigated at jointing and anthesis) and three N rates (0, 180, and 270 kg ha(-1)), we systematically investigated the effect of irrigation and nitrogen management on wheat water consumption at different growth stages, and further determined on the relationship between CWP and NUEyield simultaneously under different irrigation and nitrogen interactions. The results showed that N application and irrigation increased the total crop water consumption (1.2%-3.6% and 42.4%-44.4%, respectively). Increasing the N rate improved the soil water use (7.5%-10.3%) and reduced crop dependence on irrigation and precipitation, whereas irrigation reduced soil water utilization (54.4%-57.8%). Both irrigation and N application significantly increased the amount, percentage, and intensity of water consumption, especially during the grain filling period. There was a significant positive synergistic relationship between CWP and NUEyield under different irrigation and nitrogen treatments. For every 1 kg m(-3) increase in CWP, NUEyield increased by 2.71-11.37 kg kg(-1), depending on the N rate and water conditions. Increasing the N rate reduced the positive response of NUEyield to increasing CWP, while irrigation increased the positive response of NUEEyield to increasing CWP. After decomposing NUEyield into nitrogen uptake efficiency (NuptE) and nitrogen utilization efficiency for yield (NutE(yield)), we found that the positive synergistic relationship between CWP and NUEyield was mainly due to the positive response of NuptE but not NutE(yield) to CWP. Irrigation increased the grain nitrogen accumulation efficiency by simultaneously increasing both pre-anthesis N translocation (GNA(T)) and post-anthesis N assimilation (GNA(A)) but increased GNA(T) more significantly than GNA(A). Our results provide a theoretical basis for the efficient management of water and fertilizer in wheat production on the North China Plain and offer critical insights for improving the modeling of water-nitrogen relationships in wheat.
Capabilities of the Redy cartridge for regeneration of hemofiltrate.

Abstract:Capabilities of the Redy cartridge for hemofiltrate regeneration were tested. Electrolytes, creatinine, BUN, uric acid, acid-base, glucose, heparin, fluoride and amino acids were measured in the cartridge inflow and outflow (V = 70 ml/min) over a four-hour period. There was complete adsorption of potassium, calcium, magnesium, creatinine, BUN, uric acid, phosphate and heparin. Sodium ions, hydrogen ions, fluoride ions and possibly other trace elements are released by the cartridge. Amino acid absorption is almost complete if the amino acids are aromatic, have two or more N-atoms or if they have S-atoms. When using hemofiltrate after sorbent regeneration for reinfusion to the patient, one has to consider electrolyte substitution (i.e., K, Ca, Mg), sodium balance, trace element metabolism, acid-base problems, amino-acid profiles and ammonia overload.

Abstract:Abstract Excessive nitrogen (N) input and irrigation exacerbate N leaching in winter wheat production in the North China Plain (NCP). To explore the optimal N for better N remobilization and higher N utilization of wheat under water-saving irrigation will be conductive to less environmental contamination. A field experiment was conducted at 300 (N 300 ), 240 (N 240 ), 180 (N 180 ), and 0 (N 0 ) kg N ha −1 of N application under supplemental irrigation (SI) that brought the relative soil water content (RSWC) to 70% at jointing and 65% at anthesis. Compared with N 0 , N 180 improved the free amino acid content in the flag leaf and grain after anthesis, dry matter and plant N accumulation at maturity, N translocation amount of vegetable organs and its contribution to grain from anthesis to maturity. Compared to N 240 and N 300 , N 180 increased the N translocation efficiency of vegetable organs, and reduced the soil NO 3 -N residue in the 60–180 cm soil layer, which contributing to no significant reduction in grain yield and grain protein yield, but higher grain N recovery efficiency ( G RE N ), N recovery efficiency (RE N ), and N partial factor productivity (PFP N ). Positive relationships were found between leaf N translocation efficiency and grain yield, grain protein yield, PFP N , G RE N , and RE N . Therefore, N 180 is appropriate to obtain a steady grain yield over 7.5 t ha −1 for at least 2 years under SI based on RSWC in the NCP.

Abstract:The judicious management of water and nitrogen (N) is pivotal for augmenting crop productivity and N use efficiency, while also mitigating environmental concerns. With the advent of the High−Farmland Construction Program in China, one−off irrigation has become feasible for most dryland fields, presenting a novel opportunity to explore the synergistic strategies of water and N management. This study delves into the impact of one−off alternate furrow irrigation (AFI) and topdressing N fertilizer (TN) on soil nitrate−N distribution, and N productivity—including plant N accumulation, translocation, and allocation, and grain yield, protein content, N use efficiency of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) in 2018−2019 and 2019−2020. Experimental treatments administered at the jointing stage comprised of two irrigation methods—every (EFI) and alternative (AFI) furrow irrigation at 75 mm, and two topdressing N rates—0 (NTN) and 60 (TN) kg N ha −1 . Additionally, a conventional local farmer practice featuring no irrigation and no topdressing N (NINTN) was served as control. Compared to NINTN, EFINTN substantially increased aboveground N accumulation, grain yield, and protein yield, albeit with a reduction in grain protein content by 8.1%−10.6%. AFI, in turn, led to higher nitrate−N accumulation in the 60−160 cm soil depth at booting and anthesis, but diminished levels at maturity, resulting in a significant surge in N accumulation from anthesis to maturity and its contribution to grain, N fertilizer partial factor productivity (PFPN), and N uptake efficiency (NUPE), thereby promoting grain yield by 9.9% and preserving grain protein content. Likewise, TN enhanced soil nitrate−N at key growth stages, reflected in marked improvements in N accumulation both from booting to anthesis and from anthesis to maturity, as well as in grain yield, protein content, and protein yield. The combination of AFI and TN (AFITN) yielded the highest grain yield, protein content, with PFPN, NUPE, and N internal efficiency outstripping those of EFINTN, but not AFINTN. In essence, one−off AFI coupled with TN at the jointing stage is a promising strategy for optimizing soil nitrate−N and enhancing wheat N productivity in dryland where one−off irrigation is assured.

The Synergistic Production Effect of Water and Nitrogen on Winter Wheat in Southern Xinjiang

Abstract:Water and nitrogen management are crucial for food security and the efficient use of water and fertilizer, especially in arid regions. Three irrigation levels, namely, 80% crop water requirement (ETC) (W1), 100% ETC (W2), and 120% ETC (W3), and three nitrogen application levels, namely, 0 kg/ha (N1), 207 kg/ha (N2), and 276 kg/ha (N3), were used as the experimental treatments, and a control group, denoted as CK, was created. The results show that the maximum height achieved was 82.16 cm under W3N3. There was a single-peak variation trend throughout the growth stages of SPAD. It peaked at 58.44 under W3N3 and then at 27.9 under W2N2. The net photosynthetic and transpiration rates displayed bimodal peaks and the phenomenon of a "photosynthetic midday depression". And the prominent peaks in leaf water use efficiency occurred at 14:00 and 18:00, alongside noteworthy enhancements observed under the W3 treatment. Water and nitrogen and their interactions significantly affected the dry matter (DM) of winter wheat, with the spike accounting for the highest percentage. The W2N2 treatment demonstrated superior effectiveness in enhancing winter wheat water use efficiency, offering the potential to decrease irrigation requirements by 20% and nitrogen application by 25%. Moreover, the maximum PFPN attained under W2N2 reached 60.13, representing a noteworthy 35.25% increase compared to the control group (CK), but the HI of the W2N2 treatment only reached 0.56. The highest HI was achieved with W3N2 (0.73), and the nitrogen application of 207 kg/ha was more conducive to obtaining a higher HI. The highest yield was achieved under W3N3 (13.599 t/ha), followed by W2N2 (12.447 t/ha), and the spike proportion exceeded 60% with W2N2, and its production cost and economic benefit ratio of under 0.31 were superior to those for other treatments. Multiple regression analysis revealed that the maximum yield reached 12.944 t/ha with an irrigation amount of 3420.1 m3/ha and a nitrogen application of 251.92 kg/ha. Overall, our study suggests using an optimal water–nitrogen combination, specifically an irrigation level of 2829 m3/ha and a nitrogen application rate of 207 kg/ha, leading to increased winter wheat yields and economic benefits. These research results provide a pragmatic technique for improving winter wheat production in southern Xinjiang.

Abstract:Inappropriate irrigation and nitrogen application had caused low water and nitrogen use efficiency and severe NO3 --N leaching in spring wheat field in the Wuliangshuhai lake watershed (WLSLW) of Northwest China. Thus, aimed at determining the rational irrigation and nitrogen fertilization for spring wheat in this area, field experiments were carried out in the 2019 and 2020 seasons to investigate the effects of irrigation and nitrogen application on soil water and nitrogen status, grain yield, and water and nitrogen use efficiency. Three irrigation levels, i.e., 180, 315, and 450 mm (I3, I2 and I1), and three nitrogen fertilization rates, i.e., 170, 250, and 340 kg N ha−1 (N3, N2 and N1) were respectively considered in the experiments. Results indicated that increasing irrigation depth increased root zone soil available water, and increasing nitrogen application could significantly enhance the available nitrogen content in root zone soils and the soil water utilization amount by wheat. Under the control treatment (I1N1), about 25–32% of the applied nitrogen was leached out of the root zone soils throughout the year. Compared to the control treatment, the I2N2 treatment could reduce NO3 --N leaching by 32%, and increased the water use efficiency (WUE) and partial factor productivity of nitrogen fertilizer (PFPn) by 33% and 44%, respectively. In addition, the highest yield and net profit of 8078 kg ha−1 and 1.82×104 Chinese Yuan ha−1 was achieved by the I2N2 treatment, respectively, and it was 6% higher than that of the control treatment. Therefore, considering the grain yield, WUE, PFPn, economic benefits and environmental impacts, the strategy of 315 mm irrigation and 250 kg N ha−1 nitrogen application is recommended for spring wheat in the arid agricultural watershed of Northwest China and areas with similar conditions.

Abstract:The looming water resources worldwide necessitate the development of water-saving technologies in rice production. An open greenhouse experiment was conducted on rice during the summer season of 2016 at Huazhong Agricultural University, Wuhan, China, in order to study the influence of irrigation methods and nitrogen (N) inputs on water productivity, N economy, and grain yield of rice. Two irrigation methods, viz. conventional irrigation (CI) and “thin-shallow-moist-dry” irrigation (TSMDI), and three levels of nitrogen, viz. 0 kg N ha−1 (N0), 90 kg N ha−1 (N1), and 180 kg N ha−1 (N2), were examined with three replications. Study data indicated that no significant water by nitrogen interaction on grain yield, biomass, water productivity, N uptake, NUE, and fertilizer N balance was observed. Results revealed that TSMDI method showed significantly higher water productivity and irrigation water applications were reduced by 17.49% in TSMDI compared to CI. Thus, TSMDI enhanced root growth and offered significantly greater water saving along with getting more grain yield compared to CI. Nitrogen tracer (15N) technique accurately assessed the absorption and distribution of added N in the soil crop environment and divulge higher nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) influenced by TSMDI. At the same N inputs, the TSMDI was the optimal method to minimize nitrogen leaching loss by decreasing water leakage about 18.63%, which are beneficial for the ecological environment.

Abstract:Sound irrigation and nitrogen management strategies are necessary to achieve sustainable yield and water use efficiency of winter wheat in the North China Plain (NCP). The coupled effects of irrigation scheduling and the nitrogen application mode (NAM) on winter wheat growth, yield and water use efficiency under drip irrigation were evaluated with a two-year field experiment, which consisted of three irrigation scheduling levels (ISLs) (irrigating when soil water consumption (SWC) reached 20, 35 and 50 mm, referred as I20, I35 and I50, respectively) and three nitrogen application modes (NAMs) (ratio of basal application and topdressing as 50:50, 25:75 and 0:100, referred as N50:50, N25:75 and N0:100, respectively). The experimental results showed that irrigating winter wheat at ISL I35 substantially (p < 0.05) improved the grain yield by 15.89%, 3.32% and 14.82%, 4.31% and water use efficiency (WUE) by 5.23%, 16.03% and 5.26%, 12.36%, compared with those at ISL I20 and I50 in 2017–2018 and 2018–2019 growing seasons, respectively. NAM N25:75 appeared very beneficial in terms of grain yield, yield components and WUE as compared to other NAM levels. The maximum grain yield (8.62 and 9.40 t ha−1) and water use efficiency (1.88 and 2.09 kg m−3) were achieved in treatment I35N25:75 in two growing seasons over those in other treatments. The results in this study may deliver a scientific basis for irrigation and nitrogen fertilization management of the drip-irrigated winter wheat production in the NCP.

Abstract:Abstract Crop yield is limited by water and nitrogen (N) availability. However, in Hexi Corridor of northwestern China, water scarcity and excessive fertilizer N in wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.) production causes serious conflicts between water and N supply and crop demand. A field experiment was conducted from 2016 to 2018 to evaluate whether reducing of irrigation and fertilizer N will reduce grain yield of wheat. There were two irrigation quotas (192 and 240 mm) and three fertilizer N rates (135, 180, and 225 kg N ha −1 ). The results showed that reducing irrigation to 192 mm and N rate to 180 kg N ha −1 reduced water uptake, water uptake efficiency, and N uptake of spring wheat as compared to local practice (i.e., 240 mm irrigation and 225 kg N ha −1 fertilizer). Whereas, it improved water and N utilization efficiency, and water and N productivity. Consequently, the irrigation and N rate reduced treatment achieved the same quantity of grain yield as local practice. The path analysis showed that interaction effect between irrigation and N fertilization may attributable to the improvement of grain yield with lower irrigation and N rate. The enhanced water and N utilization allows us to conclude that irrigation quota at 192 mm coupled with fertilizer N rate at 180 kg N ha −1 can be used as an efficient practice for wheat production in arid irrigation areas.

Abstract:In recent decades, continuous increase of N fertilizer inputs made significant contributions to the wheat pro-duction increase in the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain, the largest wheat producing region of China. However, gradually the use efficiency of N fertilizer decreased, and the increasing N rate led to a series of environment problems. A better quantitative understanding of the fates of basal N and topdressing N under water-nitrogen interactions in a wheat-soil system is essential to increase yield and reduce environmental impacts. We conducted two-year wheat experiments combining field plots and micro-plots with the l5N-labeled method under two irrigation regimens (rainfall, irrigation in jointing and anthesis) and three N rates (0, 180, and 270 kg ha(-1)). The results showed that 54.9%-70.4% of total wheat N accumulation was from soil native N, while 29.6%-45.1% was from fertilizer N. Irrigation at joint and anthesis has increased wheat N accumulation more from fertilizer N than from soil native N. Compared with rainfed condition, irrigation significantly increased plant NNI at booting and anthesis. The contribution of pre-anthesis N translocation to grain N was 80.6%-86.0%, and increased with increasing total N rate, but decreased with irrigation. The fertilizer N recovery rate increased as N rate and irrigation increased, and more N recovery occurred during jointing to anthesis period (13.1%-31.3%) than anthesis to maturity period (5.7%-10.8%) and sowing to jointing period (8.4%-8.9%). Residual fertilizer N in soil accounted for 24.5%-38.6% and decreased with increasing total N rate and irrigation. 23.6%-32.7% of fertilizer N was lost into the environment, and it decreased with increasing irrigation, but wasn't affected by total N rate. The recovery and residual for topdressing N were higher than those for basal N, whereas loss was lower. Moreover, the loss of basal N mainly occurred before jointing, and the loss of topdressing N mainly occurred from jointing to anthesis and contributed more to total N loss. These results indicated that the current wheat-soil system in Huang-Huai-Hai Plain has substantial potential to coordinate the synchronization of N demand and N supply, and finally reduce N loss. Also, this would provide critical insights to construct general crop N management models for precise N management.

Abstract:Introduction: To examine the impacts of varied water and nitroge combinations on wheat yield and quality under drip irrigation in the Huang-Huai-Hai area, a field experiment was conducted over two growing seasons of winter wheat from 2019 to 2021. Methods: Traditional irrigation and fertilization methods served as the control (CK), with two nitrogen application rates set: N1 (180 kg/ha) and N2 (210 kg/ha). The irrigation schedules were differentiated by growth stages: jointing, anthesis (S2); jointing, anthesis, and filling (S3); and jointing, booting, anthesis, and filling (S4), at soil depths of 0-10 cm (M1) and 0-20 cm (M2). Results: Results indicated that compared to CK, the 3 and 4 times irrigation treatments comprehensively improved grain yield (GY) by 8.0% and 13.6% respectively, increased the average plant partial factor productivity of nitrogen fertilizer (PFPN) and irrigation use efficiency (IUE) by 57.5% and 38.2%, and 62.2% and 35.8%, respectively. The gluten content (GC) of 3 irrigations was 1.6% higher than CK, and other metrics such as dough tenacity (DT), softness (ST), water absorption (WAS), and gluten hardness (GH) also showed improvements. Furthermore, the contents of amylose, amylopectin, and total starch under 3 irrigations significantly increased by 9.4%, 11.4%, and 9.8%, respectively, with higher than 4 irrigations. The crude protein content and soluble sugar content in 3 irrigations rose by 6.5% and 9.8% respectively over two years. These irrigation treatments also optimized gelatinization characteristics of grains, such as breakdown viscosity (BDV), consistency peak viscosity (CPV), consistency setback viscosity (CSV), pasting temperature (PeT), and pasting time (PaT). Discussion: The study demonstrated that appropriate drip irrigation can effectively synchronize water and nitrogen supply during critical growth stages in winter wheat, ensuring robust late-stage development and efficient transfer of photosynthetic products into the grains, thus enhancing grain mass and yield. This also led to improved utilization of water and fertilizer and enhanced the nutritional and processing quality of the grain. However, excessive irrigation did not further improve grain quality. In conclusion, given the goals of saving water and fertilizer, achieving excellent yield, and ensuring high quality, the N1S3M1 treatment is recommended as an effective production management strategy in the Huang-Huai Hai area; N1S3M2 could be considered in years of water scarcity.

Abstract:Drip irrigation has been gradually adopted for winter wheat production in the North China Plain (NCP) due to significant saving from using irrigation water and improving water and nitrogen use efficiencies. However, the optimal water and nitrogen application rates for drip-irrigated wheat are still unclear. A field experiment with five nitrogen application rates (0, 120, 180, 240, and 300 kg ha−1, referred as N0, N1, N2, N3, and N4) and three irrigation levels (40, 30, and 20 mm per irrigation, referred as I1, I2, and I3) was conducted during the 2015–2016 and 2016–2017 winter wheat seasons to study the effects of irrigation and nitrogen rates on crop growth, yield, and the water and nitrogen use efficiencies. Results showed that increasing irrigation and nitrogen application rates notably improved actual evapotranspiration, leaf area index, aboveground biomass, grain yield, and water use efficiency (WUE) of winter wheat. However, nitrogen application rates exceeding 240 kg ha−1 were not beneficial for wheat growth, grain yield, WUE, and irrigation water use efficiency (IWUE). The maximum grain yields of 8034 and 8760 kg ha−1 were achieved in N3I1, which had WUE of 2.08 and 2.23 kg m−3, and IWUE of 4.46 and 4.87 kg m−3 in 2015–2016 and 2016–2017, respectively. At the same time, N3I1 did not result in much reduction of nitrogen partial factor productivity (NPFP) (average of 34.99 kg kg−1 in N3I1 for two seasons). Considering comprehensively growth, yield, WUE, IWUE, and NPFP, combination of N rate of 240 kg ha−1 and irrigation quota of 40 mm per irrigation was optimal pattern for drip-irrigated winter wheat. These results may provide a scientific basis for water and nitrogen management of drip-irrigated winter wheat in the NCP.

Abstract:Recently-published information on cotton agronomic and light energy use responses to nitrogen (N) under varying water availability is limited in Xinjiang, northwest China. A two-year field experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of two irrigation patterns (I 400 , conventional irrigation; I 267 , limited irrigation) and three N fertilizer rates (N 320 , 320; N 272 , 272; N 224 , 224 kg N ha −1 ) on leaf number (LN), mean inclination angle (MIA) of leaves, light interception rate (LIR), dry matter accumulation, and seed cotton yield. Under the I 400 condition, seed cotton yield for N 272 was comparable to that for N 320 , but 9.6% higher than that for N 224 . Compared with N 320 , N 272 plots exhibited a 4.7% reduction in biological yield and 4.9% increase in harvest index. N 272 I 400 slightly reduced the leaf number and increased the MIA of the top-canopy, and improved the LN and LIR in the middle canopy, canopy photosynthetic rate (CAP), and dry matter accumulation. In contrast, under I 267 conditions, N 320 significantly increased leaf area and achieved the better LIR, dry matter accumulation, and yield than N 272 and N 224 . The LIR induced by the variation in leaf number was strongly associated with CAP and dry matter accumulation. The LN of the middle canopy likely represented the strong link in photosynthetic response to N rate and water supply. Leaf number was strongly associated with leaf area and was negatively correlated with MIA. These results suggest that leaf number is a key regulatory factor for regulating canopy leaf inclination and light interception. We suggest that estimates of light energy utilization should be included along with leaf number estimates in future efforts to scale from leaf physiology to canopy construction in cotton.
