Abstract:OBJECTIVE: Families with low-income experience suboptimal sleep compared to families with higher-income. Unique drivers likely contribute to these disparities, along with factors that universally impede sleep patterns, despite income level. To inform intervention tailoring, this mixed-methods study gathered parent's perceptions about child sleep challenges to identify similarities/differences in families with lower-income and higher-income.METHODS: Parents who experienced difficulties with their child (ages 2-4years) sleep were categorized as lower income (n = 15; $30,000 ± 17,845/year) or higher income (n = 15; $142,400 ± 61,373/year). Parents completed a survey and semistructured interview to explore barriers and facilitators for child sleep. Two coders independently evaluated transcripts for lower-income and higher-income groups using inductive analyses. Constant-comparison methods generated themes and characterized similarities/differences by income group.RESULTS: Groups were similar in themes related to diverse bedtime routines, nighttime struggles with child sleep, parent strategies to reduce night wakings, parent effort to provide a sleep-promoting environment, and presence of electronic rules. Groups differed in themes related to factors influencing routine setting (eg, lower income: external factors influencing routines; higher income: personal attributes for structure), parent appraisal of child sleep (eg, higher income: ambivalence; lower income: mostly negative appraisal), nap timing and duration (eg, lower income: longer naps), and strategy utilization and pursuit of resources (eg, higher income: more parents tried various strategies and accessed online/print resources).CONCLUSIONS: Parents experienced many similar barriers to child sleep, with a few distinct differences by income group. These findings can inform future intervention components for all families, as well as customized components to address the unique needs of families across income levels.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction Healthy sleep is essential to a child's development, particularly during preschool. However, interventions that address sleep difficulties among children in this age group are scarce. This preliminary study explored parental perspectives on the effectiveness and barriers of a short sleep intervention for preschool children. Methods Twenty-nine families (either one or both parents) and their 3 to 5-year-olds participated in a two-hour sleep intervention and one-hour follow-up meeting to address children's sleep difficulties. Parents were taught about children’s optimal sleep habits. They were given tips on maintaining a consistent bedtime routine, managing their child's anxiety at bedtime and during the night, helping their child fall asleep independently, and reducing the occurrence of nightmares and night terrors. Parents were asked open-ended questions two months later to assess its success and barriers. Responses were analyzed using NVivo 14.23.2 to identify common themes. Results Numerous parents reported that their child's sleep improved in at least one aspect after the intervention. The most reported improvements were reduced nighttime awakenings, improved sleep independence, reduced sleep onset latency, a consistent sleep schedule and routine, and reduced conflicts at bedtime. More than half of parents noted that at least one aspect of their own sleep had improved, the most common being reduced sleep fragmentation. Almost all parents denoted other positive outcomes, such as better moods and reduced fatigue in children, increased patience, more personal time, improved mood and heightened energy levels in parents. A few parents indicated having a better relationship with their child. Sleep difficulties persisted in some children, such as trouble falling asleep, autonomous sleep and nighttime awakenings. Among parents who identified obstacles in implementing sleep strategies, conflicts at bedtime, changing sleep schedules, separation anxiety, and screens before bedtime were the most frequent. Conclusion Parents found the brief intervention effective and well-suited to their specific needs. Reducing children's sleep difficulties contributed to improving parents' sleep quality and the overall health and well-being of the family. This research highlights the need for tailored interventions that address preschoolers' sleep issues. Abstract:The Ca2+-ATPase of sarcoplasmic reticulum from rabbit skeletal muscle was incorporated into vesicles made from dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine or dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine. The Ca2+-ATPase activity of these reconstituted membranes became appreciable above 20 degrees C and 30 degrees C, respectively, in accord with the results of previous investigators. Measurement by the spin-labeling technique of the fluidity of the bulk lipid revealed the gel-to-liquid crystalline phase transition at 29 degrees C and 39 degrees C, respectively, while the fluidity of the boundary lipid in both samples was found to be low throughout the temperature range studied. The rotational mobility of the Ca2+-ATPase protein in both samples, measured by saturation transfer electron spin resonance, was also very low throughout the temperature range studied and its temperature-dependence did not show any break or jump corresponding to the phase transition of the bulk lipid. On the other hand, the structural fluctuation of the Ca2+-ATPase protein in dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine-recombinant, measured in terms of hydrogen-deuterium exchange reaction kinetics, showed a jump at about 27 degrees C, apparently in accordance with the phase transition of the bulk lipid. Results obtained in this study suggested that the Ca2+-ATPase protein molecules are in an aggregated state in these reconstituted membranes and that the Ca2+-ATPase activity is neither directly correlated to the fluidity of the boundary lipid nor to the rotational mobility of the Ca2+-ATPase, contrary to the suggestions of previous investigators (Hesketh et al. (1976) Biochemistry 15, 4145-4151; Hidalgo et al. (1978) J. Biol. Chem. 253, 6879-6887).

Abstract:Introduction: Social workers, the largest group of mental health clinicians in the United States, play a pivotal role in mental health promotion. Despite the importance of sleep for mental health, there is no empirical research on sleep education interventions for social workers. Method: We designed an online sleep health education intervention to equip social work students to promote healthy sleep practices among their clients. An interdisciplinary team of experts devised the 90 min intervention using an empirically supported behavioral change theoretical model (COM-B). The intervention discusses multi-level factors that impact sleep and emphasizes considerations for health disparities in populations commonly served by social workers (e.g., unhoused populations, clients with substance use disorders, etc.). We assessed sleep knowledge, sleep quality, and acceptability using survey and focus group data. Results: Ninety social work students (92.2% female, 38.8% non-Hispanic white) completed pre- and post-intervention assessments. Participants demonstrated significant improvements in sleep health knowledge and their personal sleep quality. Quantitative and qualitative data revealed perceived usefulness for social work practice. Conclusions: A short online sleep education intervention can improve sleep health knowledge, offering a practical method to expand social workers' understanding of healthy sleep promotion that can be readily implemented in clinical training and practice.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction While the efficacy and acceptability of infant behavioral sleep intervention has been developed and tested in White families, less is known about how Black mothers understand and perceive behavioral sleep recommendations. The objective of the Sleep Guidance in Black Families with Infant Children (SLUMBER) study was to evaluate the perspectives of Black mothers with infants on the acceptability and cultural appropriateness of standard infant behavioral sleep recommendations. As part of this study, we examined maternal perspectives on participation in an infant behavioral sleep program and desired patient-centered outcomes. Methods Participants were recruited through Black parent groups on Facebook and WhatsApp, along with more general social media campaigns targeting individuals who identified as Black. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with Black mothers (n=18; 55.6% with a college degree) with an infant < 9 months (M=4.5, SD=2.8; 66.7% male). Interview transcripts were analyzed within the NVivo software using a grounded theory thematic descriptive approach. Results Many mothers (n=11, 61.1%) indicated a high interest level in participating in a sleep program. Facilitators to participation included addressing current problem areas with their infant’s sleep and social support. The most identified barrier to participation was potential poor alignment between program recommendations and personal values, particularly pertaining to the acceptability of approaches involving infant crying without immediate intervention. Desired program outcomes that mothers most frequently described included a more consistent or predictable sleep/wake pattern, their baby learning to sleep independently, and increased sleep consolidation. Conclusion Black mothers endorsed high interest in participating in an infant behavioral sleep program, although over one-third were not interested. Personal and cultural alignment with program recommendations is important to parents, supporting the need for culturally sensitive interventions, with particular attention to variability in perceived acceptability of approaches involving infant crying. Infant behavioral sleep intervention programs should focus on achieving patient-centered outcomes, such as schedule consistency and sleep consolidation. Abstract:Abstract Introduction It is widely recognized that young children may experience sleep problems early in life that affect child development outcomes. Digital technology offers an accessible platform to reach and engage families of young children with sleep health solutions early in life.Our global scoping review aimed to investigate the use of digital technology as a resource to facilitate parental interventions aimed at enhancing sleep health among children in early childhood (3 –8 years old). Methods We performed a scoping review of peer-reviewed articles published from inception to 2023 for the following databases: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science including FSTA and Scielo, MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Engineering Village, CINAHL, APA PsycInfo, Global Health and citation searching. In conjunction with the authors, two librarians conducted an extensive literature search, and the strategies can be found at [osf.io/74hba]. Our methodological approach encompassed a systematic review of key terms related to sleep, communication, parental involvement, and internet-based intervention. Inclusion criteria included intervention studies with parents of children 3-8 years old via digital communications (e.g. social media, telehealth, websites, mobile apps, wearable devices) to address sleep health in their child. Exclusion criteria included platforms unrelated to sleep, studies that digitally recruited participants but did not use a digital platform, studies with children outside the target age, or protocol studies. Review Registration: https://doi.org/10.17605/OSF.IO/TNFY2 Results Four articles met the final inclusion criteria. A final sample size of 194 parent-child dyads across Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, and the United States were enrolled. Mean child age was 5 years old and mean parent age was 37. Sleep health behavior outcomes in children addressed by digital mobile health solutions included bedtime resistance, night wakings, sleep onset, sleep duration, obstructive sleep apnea, sleep latency and independent sleep in child’s own bed. Sleep health outcomes also included positive improvements in parent sleep health education. Conclusion Parent engagement with child sleep health interventions yielded favorable outcomes, enhancing the overall sleep health of children. Abstract:Abstract Introduction This comprehensive review explores methods employed to improve pediatric sleep, emphasizing developmental trends, challenges, and health impacts. The narrative navigates through behavioral modification techniques, responsive parenting, and innovative digital therapeutic interventions, offering a holistic perspective on pediatric sleep dynamics. The primary objective is to evaluate the efficacy of responsive parenting techniques within the Batelle Sleep School program in improving pediatric sleep patterns and enhancing overall family well-being. This study aims to contribute evidence-based insights into the complex interplay between sleep quality, parenting styles, and child development. Methods The study involves a retrospective analysis of surveys from under 500 families with children aged six months to six years enrolled in the Batelle Sleep School program from October 2022 to March 2023. Quantitative and qualitative data will focus on sleep assessments, parental confidence, sleep latency, and awakening surveys. The intervention spans two weeks, during which parents follow the program's guidelines. Results Pre-program and post-program data will be analyzed to assess changes in sleep latency and the number of awakenings. Statistical methods, including paired t-tests, will be employed for quantitative analysis, while qualitative data will undergo thematic analysis to identify common themes related to family dynamics and program effectiveness. Conclusion This research aims to provide evidence-based recommendations for parents, healthcare professionals, and researchers by investigating the integration of responsive parenting techniques with a digital therapeutic in the context of the Batelle Sleep School program. Bridging the gap between pediatric sleep challenges and effective interventions, this study contributes to the evolving landscape of sleep medicine, recognizing the diverse needs of families and offering tailored solutions for improved pediatric sleep. Perceived Barriers and Facilitators for Bedtime Routines in Families with Young Children

Abstract:Objectives: Bedtime routines are a highly recurrent family activity with important health, social and behavioural implications. This study examined perceived barriers to, and facilitators of, formulating, establishing, and maintaining optimal bedtime routines in families with young children. Design: Participants completed a semi-structured interview based on the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF). Analysis followed a deductive approach. Participants: A total of 32 parents participated in the study. Most participants (N = 30) were females, were white (N = 25) and stay at home parents (N = 12). Results: Key barriers included lack of appropriate knowledge and sources of information, problematic skills development, social influences, cognitive overload, and lack of motivation for change. Facilitators included social role, access to resources, positive intentions, beliefs about consequences and reinforcement. In particular, optimal bedtime routines were less likely to be enacted when parents were tired/fatigued and there was a strong effect of habit, with suboptimal routines maintained over time due to past experiences and a lack of awareness about the importance of a good bedtime routine. Conclusions: Several theory-based, and potentially modifiable, determinants of optimal bedtime routines were identified in this study, providing important information for future interventions. Several of the key determinants identified were transient (tiredness) and/or non-conscious (habit), suggesting that future interventions may need to be deployed in real time, and should extend beyond conventional techniques.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction Latino children living in urban areas face disproportionate exposure to contextual and cultural stressors that can challenge optimal sleep. School Intervention to Enhance Latino Students’ Time Asleep (SIESTA) is a tailored intervention to improve sleep hygiene and duration in Latino middle school students in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Methods Using Barrera and colleagues’ five stages of cultural adaptation, we identified intervention elements to retain, set refinement goals, and gathered information (literature review, focus groups/interviews, school feedback). Stage 2 involved expert review and integrating information from Stage 1. Stage 3 included an open trial to assess the content and acceptability of the adaptation. Stage 4 involved integration of feedback from the open trial. In Stage 5 (pilot RCT), Latino children (ages 11-13, n=34) and their caregivers were recruited from urban middle schools in Greater Providence and San Juan. Children were randomized to the SIESTA or control condition. SIESTA participants received a virtual group intervention (four sessions about sleep hygiene, duration, environment) and two caregiver-child sessions (sleep environment assessment, goal setting, feedback from daily sleep monitoring). Control participants received basic sleep and health education (equivalent contact time). All participants completed baseline, end-of-treatment (EOT), and 4-month follow-up assessments. Results We identified themes about sleep values and beliefs, urban stressors disrupting sleep (e.g., noise, crowding), and barriers to engagement. Each component was tailored based on experiences relevant to many urban Latino families. SIESTA participants reported high acceptability. Sleep duration measured via actigraphy increased by 13.3% (M=45min; d=0.16) in SIESTA participants vs. 7.2% (M=25min; d=0.14) in controls from baseline to EOT, p=.04. Differences were greater at 4-months (15% increase in SIESTA, 1% in controls). Caregiver- and child-reported sleep disturbances significantly decreased from baseline to EOT and to follow-up for SIESTA vs. controls (p’s<.04). Caregiver- and child-reported sleep hygiene improved significantly for SIESTA vs. controls from baseline to EOT and to follow-up (p’s<.05). Conclusion A rigorous, multi-method approach allowed for tailoring of an innovative intervention to address the sleep needs of urban Latino children. SIESTA shows potential to improve sleep duration and hygiene in this population. A large-scale RCT will evaluate effectiveness and implementation. Support (if any) 1R34HL135073

Complete regression of low-grade mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma in the gastric stump after eradication of Helicobacter pylori.

Abstract:Recent studies have suggested that Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori)-associated gastritis may play an important role in the pathogenesis of primary gastric lymphoma. Recently, triple therapy using proton pump inhibitor, amoxicillin, and clarithromycin, has been established for the eradication therapy of H. pylori infection, and is also recommended for the treatment of the superficial type of low-grade gastric MALT (mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue ) lymphoma. MALT lymphoma of the gastric stump is rare, and total resection or chemotherapy for MALT lymphoma of the gastric stump has been previously reported. Therefore, there is no evidence that eradication therapy is effective for low-grade MALT lymphoma of the gastric stump. Our case illustrates the remarkable efficacy of eradication of H. pylori for low-grade MALT lymphoma of the gastric stump without other modalities such as surgery and systemic chemotherapy.
A Brief Sleep Intervention Improves Outcomes in the School Entry Year: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: To determine the feasibility of screening for child sleep problems and the efficacy of a behavioral sleep intervention in improving child and parent outcomes in the first year of schooling. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial was nested in a population survey performed at 22 elementary schools in Melbourne, Australia. Intervention involved 2 to 3 consultations that covered behavioral sleep strategies for children whose screening results were positive for a moderate/severe sleep problem. Outcomes were parent-reported child sleep problem (primary outcome), sleep habits, psychosocial health-related quality of life, behavior, and parent mental health (all at 3, 6, and 12 months) and blinded, face-to-face learning assessment (at 6 months). RESULTS: The screening survey was completed by 1512 parents; 161 (10.8%) reported a moderate/severe child sleep problem, and 108 of 136 (79.2% of those eligible) entered the trial. Sleep problems tended to resolve more rapidly in intervention children. Sleep problems affected 33% of 54 intervention children versus 43% of 54 control children at 3 months (P = .3), 25.5% vs 46.8% at 6 months (P = .03), and 32% vs 33% at 12 months (P = .8). Sustained sleep-habit improvements were evident at 3, 6, and 12 months (effect sizes: 0.33 [P = .03]; 0.51 [P = .003]; and 0.40 [P = .02]; respectively), and there were initial marked improvements in psychosocial scores that diminished over time (effect sizes: 0.47 [P = .02]; 0.41 [P = .09]; and 0.26 [P = .3]; respectively). Better prosocial behavior was evident at 12 months (effect size: 0.35; P = .03), and learning and parent outcomes were similar between groups. CONCLUSIONS: School-based screening for sleep problems followed by a targeted, brief behavioral sleep intervention is feasible and has benefits relevant to school transition.

Environmental Scan of Sleep Health in Early Childhood Programs

Abstract:Objective: To ascertain how sleep health knowledge is translated to early care and education (ECE) programs, using a multi-component environmental scan. Methods: A website scan identified organizations' sleep content re: recommended practices, developmental effects, and "actionable" ratings (0-2). ECE staff surveys assessed preparedness, practices, and beliefs about addressing sleep health and sleep problems in ECE programs. Semi-structured interviews with stakeholders from the ECE, pediatric and sleep communities assessed awareness, priorities, and practices at their organizations. Results: Of 15 websites scanned, half lacked sleep content on links to development, optimal duration, or scientific background. ECE staff (n = 31) were comfortable speaking to parents about healthy sleep, and with incorporating sleep education and guidance into ECE. Stakeholders (n = 15) rated healthy sleep as a high relevance, but lower priority issue. Within ECE settings stakeholders reported that knowledge about specific links to health and development was poor and that sleep health was often obscured by "safe sleep" issues. Their recommendations included: linking sleep health to "hot topics" such as obesity or preschool suspensions and expulsions, integrating it with the teaching of routines, and raising public awareness. Conclusion: Despite understanding that healthy sleep promotes school readiness, there is insufficiently specific, actionable information in ECE training, programs, or policies. Findings suggest a need for an awareness campaign with clear, actionable messaging, dissemination of turnkey materials, and integration with policy and professional training systems. Abstract:Abstract Introduction Bedtime routines are the hallmark for sleep guidance in young children. Yet, Black children have an 80% increased likelihood of not having a bedtime routine, compared to white children. To promote healthy bedtime routines, a comprehensive assessment tool that capture children’s bedtime routine behaviors and relevant bedtime environment and context is needed to guide the targeting areas for intervention. However, existing sleep routine questionnaires do not capture sleep contexts that are relevant to Black families. Thus, the objective of our study was to develop a comprehensive sleep routine questionnaire that captures child’s bedtime routine behaviors, and household adult-child interaction and bedtime environment that support health bedtime behaviors. As the first step of the measurement development, we focused on study cultural relevance, salience and appropriateness of the three bedtime measures: 1. the Parent-Child Sleep Interaction Scale, 2. Bedtime Routines Questionnaire, and 3. Child Routines Inventory scales, prior to formal administration. Methods A human-centered design process, Ecological Theory (considering individual, home, black community contexts), and qualitative formative research methods were applied to guide sleep routine questionnaire adaptation. A convenience sample of five Black caregivers with preschool-aged children were interviewed and provided feedback for the bedtime routine surveys. Interview questions were guided by human-centered design, centering the lived experience of the caregivers, as well as multiple-domains of sleep contexts and behaviors to understand child sleep routine practices, household structure, child sleep environment, social-family connection, social support and child sleep decision-making. Results Thematic areas of caregiver feedback fell into the following three areas: 1. deficit-based and focused on punitive discipline, 2. Do not capture child weekend sleepovers at Grandparent’s house, 3. Two-home households were not reflected, 4. Racial options for mixed children were not reflected and 5. age-appropriate activities were not reflected in the measures. Conclusion Current pediatric bedtime routine sleep measures are not culturally tailored for Black families of preschool aged children. Future steps include holding caregiver focus groups to glean relevant survey items/domains for the development of a new comprehensive culturally tailored measure for Black preschool-aged children that can be used to guide the intervention and intervention theory of testing. Promoting Sleep and Balanced Screen Time among School-Aged Children with Neurodevelopmental and Mental Health Disorders: A Parent Perspective

Abstract:Background: Children with neurodevelopmental and mental health disorders (N/MHD), such as autism spectrum, mood disorders, and anxiety, are more likely to engage in excessive screen time, receive insufficient sleep, and to have obesity than neurotypical peers. However, little is known about how parents of these children approach promoting sleep and balanced screen time. Methods: We conducted semistructured interviews with 24 parents of children aged 8-15 years with a diagnosis of N/MHD to assess barriers and facilitators to promoting sleep and balanced screen time. Interviews were transcribed, double-coded using constant comparative methods, and summarized into themes using NVivo 11. Results: Many parents described children's chronic sleep challenges, often compounded by screen use and no clear solutions. When feeling overwhelmed, some parents reluctantly reported co-sleeping or allowing gaming devices in bed. Nearly all participants reported chronic, occasionally severe, conflict when managing children's screen time, with some parents experiencing opposition and physical aggression. Parents struggled to weigh the benefits of screen use (i.e., behavior management, learning, and social connection) with the costs (i.e., reduced self-care and limited physical activity). To combat barriers, parents described firm routines (i.e., "screens off" time and consistent bedtime on weekdays and weekends), moderating access (i.e., shutting down internet and no device in bedroom), verbal priming, and coping strategies (i.e., music and books). Conclusions: Parents of children with N/MHD face unique challenges in promoting sleep and balanced screen time. Given these behaviors may impact weight status and mental health, future interventions should examine ways to support parents in reducing conflict while promoting healthy habits.
School-Based Sleep Education Program for Children: A Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract:Insufficient sleep contributes negatively to child developmental processes and neurocognitive abilities, which argues the need for implementing interventions to promote sleep health in children. In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of a multimodal and multilevel school-based sleep education program in primary school children using a cluster randomized controlled design. Twelve schools were randomly assigned to either the sleep education or nonactive control groups. The sleep education group included a town hall seminar, small class teaching, leaflets, brochures, and a painting competition for children. Parents and teachers were invited to participate in a one-off sleep health workshop. Parental/caregiver-reported questionnaires were collected at baseline and 1-month follow-up. A total of 3769 children were included in the final analysis. There were no significant improvements observed in the sleep-wake patterns, daytime functioning, and insomnia symptoms between the two groups at follow-up, whereas the intervention group had significantly improved parental sleep knowledge than the controls (paternal: adjusted mean difference: 0.95 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.18 to 1.71]; maternal: adjusted mean difference: 0.87 [95% CI: 0.17 to 1.57]). In addition, children receiving the intervention had a lower persistence rate of excessive beverage intake (adjusted odds ratio: 0.49 [95% CI: 0.33 to 0.73]), and experienced greater reductions in conduct problems (adjusted mean difference: 0.12 [95% CI: 0.01 to 0.24]) compared with the controls at 1-month of follow-up. Moreover, a marginally significant reduction for emotional problems in the intervention group was also observed (adjusted mean difference: 0.16 [95% CI: -0.00 to 0.32]). These findings demonstrated that school-based sleep education was effective in enhancing parental sleep knowledge and improving behavioral outcomes in children, but not sufficient in altering the children's sleep-wake patterns and sleep problems.

Abstract:Background: Daily behaviors such as sleep can be targeted by smartphone app-based interventions, with potential utility among young people of minority ethnic backgrounds who commonly access smartphone devices and are short sleepers. There is a need to understand the acceptability and youth's readiness to use apps to improve sleep, and to identify desired app components that would motivate engagement. Participants and Methods: We conducted three focus group discussions (N = 27 total, age 14-18 years) within low- and middle-income ethnically diverse Boston neighborhoods. We also interviewed 10 participants who provided specific feedback on two commercially available sleep-promoting apps, one of which they had used on their smartphone preceding the interviews. All focus group discussions and interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, and thematically analyzed. Results: We identified several barriers to adoption of sleep hygiene interventions, namely reluctance to follow scheduled sleep routines on weekends and concern about "parting" with electronics at bedtime. Participants were intrigued by the idea of adopting an app-based sleep intervention, but were skeptical that they could successfully adopt sleep hygiene practices, and were more interested in making changes on school days than on weekends. Nonetheless, the overall feedback on two commercial sleep apps, neither targeted at youth, was positive, with a good adherence and engagement rate, and perceived health benefits. Conclusions: Our findings highlight the need to adapt sleep hygiene recommendations to targeted populations, considering preferences and social and cultural contextual factors. Our research also underscores the importance of the platform, setting, and messenger when delivering health information to adolescents.

Abstract:BackgroundSleep problems in childhood have been found to be associated with memory and learning impairments, irritability, difficulties in mood modulation, attention and behavioral problems, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Short sleep duration has been found to be associated with overweight and obesity in childhood. This paper describes the protocol of a behavioral intervention planned to promote healthier sleep in infants.MethodsThe study is a 1:1 parallel group single-blinded randomized controlled trial enrolling a total of 552 infants at 3 months of age. The main eligibility criterion is maternal report of the infant’s sleep lasting on average less than 15 h per 24 h (daytime and nighttime sleep). Following block randomization, trained fieldworkers conduct home visits of the intervention group mothers and provide standardized advice on general practices that promote infant’s self-regulated sleep. A booklet with the intervention content to aid the mother in implementing the intervention was developed and is given to the mothers in the intervention arm. In the two days following the home visit the intervention mothers receive daily telephone calls for intervention reinforcement and at day 3 the fieldworkers conduct a reinforcement visit to support mothers’ compliance with the intervention. The main outcome assessed is the between group difference in average nighttime self-regulated sleep duration (the maximum amount of time the child stays asleep or awake without awakening the parents), at ages 6, 12 and 24 months, evaluated by means of actigraphy, activity diary records and questionnaires. The secondary outcomes are conditional linear growth between age 3–12 and 12–24 months and neurocognitive development at ages 12 and 24 months.DiscussionThe negative impact of inadequate and insufficient sleep on children’s physical and mental health are unquestionable, as well as its impact on cognitive function, academic performance and behavior, all of these being factors to which children in low- and middle-income countries are at higher risk. Behavioral interventions targeting mothers and young children that can be delivered inexpensively and not requiring specialized training can help prevent future issues by reducing the risk to which these children are exposed.Trial registrationClinicalTrial.gov NCT02788630 registered on 14 June 2016 (retrospectively registered).

Abstract:Joint genotype distributions of parent-child, sib-sib, cousin-cousin, and other relative pairs with respect to a single locus are well known. Knowing the joint genotype distribution in two-dimensional probability space, it is not difficult to derive the joint phenotype distribution, assuming that the phenotypic expressions of genes are determined. Joint genotype and phenotype distributions of pairs of relatives have been applied to a number of genetic problems such as the estimation of gene frequencies, estimation of heritability, testing hypotheses on single locus inheritance complicated by incomplete penetrance and/or reduced viability of gametes or genotypes, and a few other problems. The estimators are usually obtained by the method of maximum likelihood based on a simple random sample. In the literature, attention has been drawn from time to time to the fact that a simple random sample of parent-child pairs means a parent and one child per family selected at random from a population; a simple random sample of sib-sib pairs means two siblings per family selected at random from a population of families. However, these rules are very rarely observed, since quite often families with more than two children are examined and the investigators do not want to waste carefully collected family data. In such situations the joint distributions of s relatives (s 2, 3,. . .) should be used. In this section, a general method for obtaining a joint genotype distribution of s siblings is outlined.
