Abstract:With urban and public transportation development, the urban rail transit networks (URTN) become increasingly complex, evolving into multi-layer and intricate systems. The operating environment is complex, and the rising frequency of emergencies significantly impacts the entire network. Consequently, the resilient ability of URTN to deal with risk attacks has become an important research field. In this paper, a bilayer URTN model is constructed, encompassing urban and suburban rail transit, proposing the adjacency matrix and the coupling mechanism of subnetworks. Then, the performance of a URTN jointly considering network efficiency, network structure entropy, and the number of trips per unit time is addressed. By considering passenger travel alternatives under disruptions, we develop an improved Logit stochastic user equilibrium (SUE) passenger assignment model based on generalized travel time costs, introducing the failure degree of the stations, to predict passenger flow paths. A multi-dimensional resilience assessment model is proposed using the resilience change curve for attack scenarios and recovery strategies, and a comprehensive network performance system through the AHP method to determine the weight coefficients of indicators. Finally, we present a case study based on the Shanghai URT network to explore the resilience of URTN in the morning peak and simulate the network resilience under different failure scenarios. The results indicate that the proposed model can assess the resilience of the Shanghai MRTN under random and malicious failure, and the former has less comprehensive performance losses and greater resilience. Additionally, the sensitivity analysis is conducted to explore the impact of the number of failed stations, the failure degree of stations, and recovery ability on network resilience. This study provides theoretical support for urban managers and builders regarding network structure and emergency management, and offers relevant suggestions.

Abstract:Vulnerability analysis is the premise of operational risk management and control for the large-scale and complex urban rail transit network (URTN) under the operation interruption of important stations. The temporary operation interruption of one station in an emergency may lead to the cascading failure and the paralysis of the whole URTN due to the load of other stations exceeding the limited capacity. The priority of important stations is proposed by combining its location and function in URTN. In addition, focusing on the analysis of the travel behaviour of passengers and the synergy of public transport networks, a novel cascading failure evolution model is established to simulate the cascading failure process of URTN under different attack scenarios. The vulnerability indicators are constructed to dynamically evaluate the vulnerability of URTN considering cascading failure evolution, which are different from the traditional vulnerability indicators based on complex network theory. Taking the Beijing urban rail transit network as an example, the dynamic simulation results show that the cascading failure of URTN is closely related to the temporal-spatial distribution of passenger flows and malicious attacks are more destructive than random attacks. Compared with the important stations with the largest betweenness or degree, the interrupted stations with largest intensity have a greater impact on the operational stability of URTN. Moreover, increasing the capacity coefficient of the station can reduce the vulnerability of URTN.

The Invulnerability of Traffic Networks under New Attack Strategies.

Abstract:In this paper, invulnerability and attack strategies are discussed for the undirected unweighted urban road networks and the directed weighted taxi networks of Beijing. Firstly, five new attack strategies, i.e., Initial All Degree (IAD), Initial All Strength (IAS), Recalculated Closeness (RC), Recalculated All Degree (RAD) and Recalculated All Strength (RAS) and five traditional attack strategies, i.e., Initial Degree (ID), Initial Betweenness (IB), Initial Closeness (IC), Recalculated Degree (RD) and Recalculated Betweenness (RB) are adopted to provoke the nodes failure. Secondly, we assess the impacts of these attack strategies using two invulnerability metrics, i.e., S (the relative size of the giant component) and E (the average network efficiency) through simulation experiments by MATLAB. Furthermore, we obtain some conclusions on the basis of the simulation results. Firstly, we discover that IB is more efficient than others for the undirected unweighted 5th ring Beijing road network based on S, and IB is more efficient than others at the beginning while ID is more efficient than IB at last based on E, while IAD causes a greater damage than IAS for the directed weighted 5th ring Beijing taxi network no matter with metrics S or E. Secondly, we find that dynamic attacks are more efficient than their corresponding static attacks, and RB is more destructive than others in all attack graphs while RAD is more destructive than RAS in all attack graphs. Moreover, we propose some suggestions to advance the reliability of the networks according to the simulation results. Additionally, we notice that the damage between ID (RD) and IAD (RAD) is similar due to the large proportion of two-way roads, and we realize that global measures should be employed to estimate the best attack strategy on the basis of that we find the best attack strategy changes with the nodes failure.

Abstract:An urban metro network is susceptible to becoming vulnerable and difficult to recover quickly in the face of an unexpected attack on account of the system's complexity and the threat of various emergencies. Therefore, it is necessary to assess the resilience of urban metro networks. However, the research on resilience assessment of urban metro networks is still in the development stage, and it is better to conduct said research using a technique which combines many attributes, multiple methods, and several cases. Therefore, based on the complex network modeling and topological characteristics analysis of metro systems, a metro network's robustness and vulnerability measurement method under node interruption and edge failure is proposed for the first time in this study. Then, considering the three cases of general station interruption, interchange station interruption, and traffic tunnel failure, a quantitative resilience assessment model of metro networks is put forward, and the corresponding recovery strategies are discussed. Finally, a case study of the Zhengzhou Metro Network (ZZMN) under an extreme rainstorm is conducted to demonstrate the viability of the proposed model. The results show that ZZMN possesses scale-free and small-world network properties, and it is robust to random interruptions but vulnerable to deliberate attacks. ZZMN still needs to improve its effectiveness in information transmission. The centrality distribution for each node in the ZZMN network differs significantly, and each node's failure has a unique impact on the network. The larger the DC, BC, and PR of a node is, the lower the network's robustness after its removal is, and the stronger the vulnerability is. Compared with the three cases of general station interruption, interchange station interruption, and traffic tunnel failure, the network loss caused by tunnel failure was the lowest, followed by general station interruption, and the interruption at interchange stations was the most costly. Given the failures under various cases, the metro management department should prioritize selecting the optimal recovery strategy to improve the resilience of the metro network system. This study's findings can assist in making urban metro systems less vulnerable to emergencies and more resilient for a quick recovery, which can provide scientific theoretical guidance and decision support for the safety and resilient, sustainable development of urban metro systems.

Abstract:In the urban public transport network, the transfer of buses and subways provides convenience for residents to travel efficiently. But in actual operation, it is found that accidents, natural disasters, and other damage are inevitable. These sudden events may lead to route suspensions and service delays, ultimately resulting in network paralysis. In this paper, complex network theory is used to construct a weighted double-layer network model. Carrying capacity is considered the edge weight. The model analyzes the impact of these sudden events on network performance. It also conducts in-depth research on network structure and node importance. A collective influence (CI) algorithm is proposed as a centrality index to evaluate node importance. Based on the dynamic nature of the attacks, the network state is divided into initial network and current network. Taking Hohhot as an example, the results show that the network based on a CI algorithm node attack has the worst invulnerability. The network invulnerability based on an edge weight attack is better than that of edge betweenness. Compared with the current network, the invulnerability of the initial network is stronger. This indicates that ongoing changes and adaptations in the network may accelerate the decline in overall performance. At the same time, targeted interventions on key nodes and edges can enhance the network's invulnerability. Planners can continuously monitor network performance to provide a basis for dynamic management and real-time adjustments. Additionally, effective information about critical routes to the public helps ensure the sustainable operation of the public transportation network.

Abstract:The urban transit system is vulnerable to various types of hazards and failures, where the failure of a system component may lead to a redistribution of the pressure and result in cascade failures. It is of great significance to develop an efficient approach to model and assess the system vulnerability for achieving a sustainable transit system. This research develops a novel holistic approach to assess the vulnerability of the urban transit system toward sustainable development. The cascading failure mechanism is incorporated in the established complex network to simulate the process in a dependent system, where the failure of one or a few system components can trigger the failure of other components. Several attack strategies (i.e., static and dynamic intentional attack and random attack strategies) are used to test the system vulnerability, and the impacts of the tolerance parameter and passenger transfer rate on the loss of transport capacity are explored. A complex network consisting of 198 nodes and 415 edges is constructed to model the urban transit system with cascade failures. A realistic urban transit system in China is used as a case to testify the applicability and effectiveness of the developed approach. Results indicate that: (1) The interchange stations display high vulnerability in the network and Xianggang Rd station, Hongtu Boulevard station, Taipingyang station, and Zhongnan Rd are the most vulnerable stations, which should be paid more attention in the operation management; (2) The damage of the attacks in the intentional attack strategies are much more significant than that in the random attack, indicating that the proposed approach presents the ability to identify the important nodes; (3) The metric of node betweenness would be more efficient to identify the vulnerable nodes in the intentional attack; (4) The optimal value of the tolerance parameter is the range [0.8, 0.9], while keeping the passenger transfer rate in the range [0.3, 0.4] can effectively reduce the effect of cascade failures with minimum resources. The developed approach can be used as a decision tool to not only assess the vulnerability in the existing transit system but also optimize the planning of the new transit system.

Abstract:This paper explores several reliability and vulnerability measures for transportation networks and proposes three models for optimal resource allocation for transportation network design or defense to minimize the disruption caused by both random and targeted attacks. The common day to-day disturbances with less severe consequences are referred to as ran tom attacks, but targeted attacks include both coordinated terrorist strikes and large-scale natural disasters. For random attacks, the major concern would be the reliability of the total system travel time. A robust discrete network design problem is formulated to take into account random attacks in the planning stage. The transport capacity or the unsatisfied demand would be critical in case of emergency evacuation, and law enforcement forces could be deployed to prevent malicious attacks in the first place or to ensure a smooth evacuation operation. The proposed models feature an intrinsic trilevel game structure of the network users, the attacker, and the defender (planner). By exploring the unique properties of the proposed measures and reformulating the problems, the trilevel structure models are reduced to mixed-integer semi-infinite optimization programs. This paper further applies an active-set algorithm, combined with a cutting-plane scheme to solve the proposed models. Numerical examples indicate that the proposed formulations are valid and that the solution algorithm can solve the problems effectively and efficiently. The models for targeted attacks provide practical implications on identifying critical infrastructures for evacuation.

Abstract:The vulnerability of an urban road network is affected by many factors, such as internal road network layout, network structure strength, and external destructive events, which have great uncertainty and complexity. Thus, there is still no unified and definite vulnerability analysis scheme available to cities. This paper proposes an integrative vulnerability identification method for urban road networks, which mainly relates to the vulnerability connotation and characteristics analysis of urban road networks during emergency, and vulnerability comprehensive evaluation indices design based on urban road network connectivity, traffic efficiency and performance, and an empirical study on a vulnerability identification method of an urban road network. In the empirical case, a real road network and traffic operation data were used from Science and Technology Park of Shenzhen City, China. In the context of one certain emergency scenario, the stated preference survey method and maximum likelihood method are used to solve the road users’ random travel choice behavior parameters; subsequently, based on the traffic equilibrium distribution prediction, the traffic vulnerability identification methods of the road network in this region were verified before and after the emergency. The method presented here not only considers the impact of network topology changes on road network traffic function during emergency but also considers the impact of dynamic changes in road network traffic demand on vulnerability; therefore, it is closer to the actual distribution of urban road network traffic vulnerability.

Abstract:Service disruption of urban rail transit systems in natural disasters induces direct and simultaneous impacts (e.g., delay of travel) that may propagate to indirect and long-term impacts (e.g., economic losses). Models that can identify the critical components of infrastructures, if with proper granularity, will help to form actionable strategies for infrastructure protection and resilience. To better understand the system response under service disruption and followed recovery strategies, a purely data-driven approach is proposed to model system absorptive and adaptive resilience. To do so, the urban rail transit system is modeled as a customized two-layer network to distinguish its infrastructure layer and service layer. A new localized measure, i.e., link flow, is suggested to construct the system functionality in attack-repair scenarios. It is estimated based on recorded smart card data. Applied to the Hangzhou Metro system, service restoration relying on the new metric is 2∼3 times faster and more robust (i.e., smaller normalized standard deviation) than that relying on the common metric (recovery cost) under a portfolio of attacks tested with varying severity. Stably high correlations (i.e., 0.65 to 0.8) are observed between the two set of rank indices, i.e., of infrastructure topology-based importance and of flow-based importance. Furthermore, the system responses to attacks with estimated link flow are consistent with simulated ones with known and exact link flow.

Abstract:This research develops a hybrid approach that integrates disaster chains and complex networks to model and assess vulnerability in urban transit systems. A weighted complex network is established by combining various disaster chains and their frequencies in the operation of the urban transit system, where disaster events and their transmission paths in chains are considered as nodes and edges in the disaster network, respectively. Several measures are proposed to quantify the vulnerability magnitude of the disaster nodes, edges, and network from both micro-level and macro-level perspectives. A weighted complex network consisting of 31 disaster nodes and 73 edges is constructed to model the disaster transmission in the operation of the metro system. Results show that (1) The steward misoperation (Node 15), the unqualified maintenance (Node 17), and the edge E38 (from Node 17 to Node 23) are identified as the most vulnerable nodes and edge, which should be paid more attention for disaster risk reduction; (2) The network efficiency is calculated to be 0.1244, acting as an anchor for improving system resilience against disasters; (3) The proposed edge vulnerability measure proves to be more effective in discovering more vulnerable edges than the traditional edge measure. Both node and edge attack analysis are performed to discuss the robustness of the developed complex network. It is found that all the intentional attack strategies display better performance for reducing network efficiency than random attack strategies, and global attack strategies are more efficient in both node and edge attack analysis than local attack strategies. This indicates that the developed approach is necessarily effective to identify the vulnerability of disaster events and links in the urban transit system, enabling to discover the best strategy for improving the resilience of the transit system against disasters.

Abstract:With the emerging interdisciplinary study between transportation and network topological dynamics, exploring vulnerability bottlenecks (which consider knowledge differences between infrastructure disruptions and route service disruptions) of large-scale bus transit networks has become prevailing. This study aims to distinguish and simulate two types of disruptions by considering different concerns of different stakeholders on vulnerability. An integrated vulnerability evaluation indicator is designed to realize the comparability of attacks at various scales (which include single target, route, and area scales) and the diversity of measuring perspectives. Then, a case study is conducted based on the designed attack strategy set, from which the most efficient deliberate attack to trigger network vulnerability is quantitatively explored. The results indicate that the areas of the large-scale bus transit network accessing and interacting with urban rail transit stations are vulnerability bottlenecks, and the destructiveness of a failure edge is driven by the scale of sudden failures it constitutes. This work deepens the understanding of two types of disruptions, improves the comparability of various vulnerability studies, and provides insights for formulating operational management policies.

Abstract:Urban rail transit is the backbone of urban transportation, and thus it is significant to understand its vulnerability, i.e., whether the system can still maintain normal operations when facing operational disturbances with different magnitudes. To this end, this paper proposes a network vulnerability assessment method with the joint consideration of static network topology and dynamic travel demand. The method includes an accessibility-based identification of station importance with time-varying passenger demand and a new dynamic vulnerability evaluation index. An empirical analysis is carried out by taking the rail transit system of Beijing, China as an example. Results show that the distribution of high-importance stations varies with the time of day, affected by both static topology and hourly-changing passenger flow. Under the disturbance of operation delay, the impact of high-importance stations on the network vulnerability changes with the increase of delayed travel demand. It is also found that some stations that serve as bridges (i.e., reasonable paths link the origin station and destination) and are visited by large passenger flow have the greatest impact on network vulnerability. Network performance degradation is obviously segmented and stratified in the case of interval continuous failure. The disruption between different lines is the main reason for system performance degradation, and some important stations within the line will act as catalysts to accelerate the performance degradation. This method provides a reference for measuring dynamic passenger flow-related network vulnerability and supplies the field with a new vulnerability evaluation index.
Vulnerable Stations Identification of Urban Rail Transit Network: A Case Study of the Shenzhen Metro

Abstract:Rail transit in major cities in China has developed rapidly and become an essential part of urban transport. However, safety is a significant issue that cannot be ignored. Combined the network structure and passenger flow distribution, the vulnerability of urban rail transit network are analyzed, and the hub stations in the network by their vulnerability are identified. The characteristics of urban rail transit network structure are analyzed by complex network theory. From the perspective of operation, an urban rail transit network model is established considering the load factor. The damage to the station varies according to different emergencies. Attack strategies are classified into random attacks and deliberate attacks which include static and dynamic ones. The consequences of an attack are divided into two cases: full failure and semi-failure. The overall network efficiency loss is used to evaluate the vulnerability of urban rail transit network on the node attacked. Ultimately, the Shenzhen Metro is taken as an example to analyze and evaluate the vulnerability and identify the vulnerable stations, which provide scientific reference and basis for the safety management of urban rail transit networks.
An integrated resilience assessment model of urban transportation network: A case study of 40 cities in China

Abstract:The transportation network is essential in providing daily accessibility and essential service to societies. An acceptable level of service needs to be maintained in critical infrastructures, even in the case of disruptions. We develop an integrated model to assess the resilience of urban transportation networks when exposed to different disruptions. Resilience is evaluated from perspectives of both traffic network topology and traffic flow. This model contains three parts: (1) a traffic flow simulation model to get flow distributed throughout the whole network, (2) different real-world disruptions are abstracted as random, localized, and flood disturbances, (3) functional and topological resilience are accessed by analyzing variations in travel time and connected components before and after a disruption occurs. 40 major cities are chosen to conduct resilience assessments. As the intensity of the disruption increases, common trends in the changes of functional and topological resilience values are observed and analyzed across all studied cities. In most cases, flood disruption is the least disruptive one of all three types of disruptions. Regression models are developed to estimate functional and topological resilience after random, localized, and flood disturbances. Possible resilience enhancement strategies are discussed based on analyses of regression models. This study could aid stakeholders in gaining a clear understanding of resilience not only topologically but also from the perspective of traffic flow and offer them practical strategies to enhance resilience in face of disruptions.

Abstract:Recently, urban agglomerations have become the main platform of China’s economic development. As one of those, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) has an important strategic position in national blueprints. Its amazing achievement is inseparable from reliable and resilient transportation networks. With the aim of improving the sustainability of the GBA, this paper presents a novel view of vulnerability and resilience of integrated transportation networks within an urban agglomeration. According to complex network theory, the integrated transportation network model of the GBA was established. Various scenarios were considered to improve the overall level of defensive ability, including random failures, targeted attacks and natural hazards. Vulnerability and resilience assessment models were developed to investigate the influences on the whole network. Finally, a simulation analysis was conducted on the GBA to examine the variations in network performance when faced with different attack scenarios. The results indicate that the transportation network of the GBA is more vulnerable and has less resilience to targeted attacks, while natural hazards had little influence on the performance, to a certain extent. Moreover, the betweenness recovery strategy seemed to be the best choice for every attack scenario.

Abstract:With the increase of the operation mileage of the urban rail transit and the extension of lines, the networked operation has become an inevitable trend of rail transit operation. Once an emergency takes place, it will cause delays of the large‐scale operation or even more serious mass safety incidents. First, the topology structure of urban rail transit network is analyzed. According to the static characteristics of the network clustering coefficient, degree, etc, a network model of directional empowerment network is constructed that can be used for analysis of the delay propagation scope. Second, the characteristics of the mass passenger flow distribution of rail transit in emergency is investigated and deeply explored in this paper. Based on this, the model of the delay spread and dissipation is constructed according to the emergency handling time and dissipation time of the passenger congestion. Finally, based on the cellular automaton model, the evolution rule for the delay spreading of the station state is established. The simulation results show that the established model has good reliability and accuracy, which can be adopted to predict the duration and spread of the delay in the emergency. This provides a basis for adjusting the transport organization plan and evacuating passenger flow in emergency.

Abstract:Giant urban rail transit (GURT) systems have been formed in many metropolises and play a critical role in addressing serious traffic congestion. Unfortunately, as a dynamic and complex system, the vulnerability of GURT networks under various failure scenarios will be more prominent as the network expansion continues. Thus, it is imperative to explore the complex structural characteristics of the network and improve the ability to deal with the disturbance of emergencies. In this study, the destruction resistance of GURT networks with scale growth is illustrated from a vulnerability perspective. Specifically, taking Shanghai rail transit (SHRT) system as an example, the network topology model is constructed using the Space L method, and the network structure characteristics are analyzed based on the complex network theory. In addition, five attack strategies are developed to represent random and targeted attacks during the simulation of network failure, and two metrics are determined to evaluate the network vulnerability. Some meaningful results have been obtained: (i) The Shanghai rail transit planning network (SHRTPN) has increased the network efficiency by more than 10% over the Shanghai rail transit operating network (SHRTON) and has effectively enhanced the network destruction resistance. (ii) The SHRT network is a small-world network and shows significant vulnerability under the targeted attacks. The failure of only 3% high betweenness stations in SHRTON can lead to a 66.2% decrease in the network efficiency and a 75.8% decrease in the largest connected component (LCC) ratio. (iii) Attacking stations will cause more severe network failures than attacking edges, and it is necessary to focus on preventing catastrophic network failure caused by the critical station's failure breaking the threshold. Finally, the strategies for improving the destruction resistance of GURT networks are proposed. The findings of this research can provide an essential reference for the rational planning, safety protection, and sustainable construction of GURT systems.

Abstract:In terms of urban rail transit network vulnerability, most studies have focused on the changes of network topology and functional characteristics under disruptive events while ignoring the impacts of cascading failures on network performance. In this study, an improved Coupled Map Lattices model is proposed to address the evolution process of cascading failures on rail transit network. Particularly, the model quantifies important factors of cascading failures integrating quantitative failure spreading mode, anti-risk ability of stations, and perturbation index. The rail transit network vulnerability is then modeled addressing numbers of failed stations, degree of affected passengers, and loss of passenger travel time as a result of cascading failures. The methodology is applied to the metro network of Shanghai, China. Results show that the propagation of network cascading failure depends on the station's anti-risk ability, geographical location, and type of adjacent stations. Stations located in the urban center area are more susceptible to failures of adjacent stations. Furthermore, higher affected passenger volume and station coupling strength would lead to more serious and rapid spreading of failures, and thus more vulnerable of the metro system. However, the anti-risk ability of stations could effectively resist the spread of failures in the early stage, and stations with higher topology redundancy demonstrate stronger anti-risk ability.

Abstract:Metro systems serve large populations and form extensive networks. Incidents such as signal failure, train failure, and power failure, pose great challenges to the reliable operation of metro systems around the world. For the Beijing metro system, incidents caused 408 disruptions of train services from 2014 to 2018. These incidents are investigated in detail, and a Monte Carlo approach and incident parameter functions are used to generate stochastically simulated incident events. Based on the simulated incidents, combined passenger flow data and an input-output model, we estimate the risk associated with the Beijing metro system in terms of disrupted passenger flows by considering risk propagation in the network, where both direct passenger loss and indirect passenger flow loss considering interchanges between different lines are considered. Lines at high risk are identified, and a sensitivity analysis is performed to investigate the effects of risk mitigation measures. This study provides a generic risk modeling method for urban metro systems and can improve decision making to manage metro system risk.

Abstract:Improving multi-mode public transit resilience becomes crucial as urban traffic infrastructure gradually completes. This paper aims to build a dynamic resilience evaluation method and explore the resilience evolution process for multi-mode public transit. For establishing the resilience evaluation method, we considered both structural and functional indicators of the network. Then, we built a nonlinear load-capacity model and a cascading failure model to reflect the dynamic feature of resilience. Next, attack scenarios were designed according to the actual characteristics of the multi-mode public transit. Using the passenger flow data from Xi'an, we tested the impact of station capacity on the dynamic resilience results and analyzed the resilience evolution process. The results indicate that the network's resilience performance was the worst when the subway station was destroyed. Through adjusting the capacity control parameters, we found the best station capacity control parameter is α=0.5,β=0.4. Moreover, the sharply reducing intervals found in the results could help traffic managers improve transport efficiency while controlling costs.
