Abstract:Introduction/Objective. The objective of the paper was to evaluate the efficacy of Tetradium ruticarpum (A. Juss.) patch (TRP) in combination with Chinese massage (Tuina) for the treatment of insomnia in elderly patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). Methods. A cohort of 320 elderly CHF patients with comorbid insomnia, treated at the Zhejiang University of Traditional Chinese Medicine Affiliated Wenzhou Hospital from January 2019 to July 2022, were enrolled and equally divided into 4 groups (n = 80 per group). The control group received standard pharmacological intervention with eszopiclone. Patients in TRP group received TRP alone, while those in Tuina group received Tuina therapy alone. Patients in the combined treatment group received both TRP and tuina therapy. All treatments lasted for 14 days. Sleep quality was assessed at baseline and then on days 7 and 14 after treatment using the Pitts-burgh Sleep Quality Index Scale (PSQI). Results. There were significant reductions in total PSQI scores in all groups on day 7 compared to baseline (p < 0.05). On day 14, the combined treatment, Tuina, and TRP groups showed significantly reduced total PSQI scores relative to baseline, while a reversal of this trend was seen in the control group (p < 0.05). The combined treatment group had the lowest total PSQI scores at both days 7 and 14. Conclusion. The combined use of Tuina and TRP may be effective in alleviating insomnia in elderly CHF patients. It resulted in consistent and sustained efficacy, potentially reducing the likelihood of drug resistance.

A Clinical Study on Chinese Five-Element Music Therapy Combined with Auricular-Plaster Therapy in Treating Perimenopausal Insomnia and Anxiety

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the clinical effects of five-element music therapy combined with auricular-plaster therapy for perimenopausal insomnia with anxiety. This study aimed to leverage the complementary effects of both approaches to provide patients with a more comprehensive and personalized therapeutic experience. Methods: In this experiment, 90 cases of perimenopausal insomnia patients were selected and randomly assigned to the treatment group (45 cases) and the control group (45 cases) using the random number table method. In the treatment group, except for 2 cases who withdrew, the remaining 43 cases were observed and treated with Five Elements Music combined with auricular acupressure therapy. In the control group, except 3 cases withdrew, 42 cases were observed and given alprazolam oral treatment. The treatment course of both groups was 4 weeks. Data such as Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA) scores were also recorded for all patients before and after treatment. Results: After treatment, the total effective rate was 93.02% in the treatment group and 88.10% in the control group. The PSQI and HAMA scores of the two groups after treatment improved compared to before treatment(P < .01). The curative effect in the treatment group was superior to that in the control group in terms of sleep quality and anxiety. Conclusion: The five-element music therapy combined with auricular-plaster therapy is effective in the treatment of perimenopausal insomnia with anxiety. Compared with traditional therapy, Chinese medicine non-drug therapy has the characteristics of green safety, simple effect, and low cost. It can avoid adverse reactions caused by long-term use of drugs, so It is a safe and reliable method, worthy of recommendation for clinical use.
[A clinical trial of treatment of primary insomnia of patients with qi-stagnation constitution by shallow acupuncture combined with ear-acupoint pellet-pressing]

Abstract:Objective: To investigate the clinical effect of shallow acupuncture combined with ear-acupoint pellet-pressing in the treatment of primary insomnia in patients with qi-stagnation constitution. Methods: A total of 60 primary insomnia outpatients with qi-stagnation constitution were randomly divided into treatment group and control group, with 30 patients in each group. The patients in the control group were given oral Alprazolam tablets once a day, and those in the treatment group given shallow acupuncture of Yintang (EX-HN3), Shangen (inferior to EX-HN3), Anmian (EX-HN16) and bilateral Xingjian (LR2) and bilateral Taichong (LR3), once a day, and combined with pellet-pressing of ear acupoints "Shenmen""Sympathy""Subcortex""Heart" and "Liver" once every other day. Each course of treatment was 10 consecutive days, and both groups were treated for three courses. The sleep quality was assessed using Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the emotional status assessed using Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS), and the qi-stagnation state evaluated according to "the Criteria for Classification and Judgement of Constitution of Traditional Chinese Medicine (2009)". The therapeutic effect was evaluated according to "the Criteria for Diagnosis and Evaluation of Therapeutic Effect of Diseases of Traditional Chinese Medicine"．. Results: Of the two 30 cases in the control and treatment groups, 2 (6.7%) and 6 (20.0%) were cured, 6 (20.0%) and 14 (46.7%) experienced marked improvement in their symptoms, 21 (70.0%) and 6 (20.0%) were effective, and 1 (3.3%) and 4 (13.3%) ineffective, with the effective rate being 86.7% and 96.7%, respectively. No significant difference was found between the two groups in the short-term effect (P>0.05). One month's follow-up showed that, of the two 30 cases in the control and treatment groups, 2 (6.7%) and 5 (16.7%) were cured, 4(13.3%) and 14 (46.6%) experienced marked improvement, 10 (33.3%) and 6 (20.0%) were effective, and 14(46.7%) and 5(16.7%) ineffective, with the effective rate being 53.3% and 83.3%, respectively. The long-term therapeutic effect of the treatment group was significantly superior to that of the control group (P<0.05). After the treatment, both PSQI and SDS scores in the two groups, and qi-stagnation score in the treatment group showed a significant reduction in comparison with their own pretreatment (P<0.05), and one-month's follow-up (not the short-term outcome) displayed that the PSQI, SDS and qi-stagnation scores of the treatment group were significantly lower than those of the control group (P<0.05)．. Conclusion: Shallow acupuncture combined with ear-acupoint pellet-pressing can significantly improve sleep quality, depression symptoms, and pathological constitution in primary insomnia patients with qi-stagnation constitution, possessing a stable long-term clinical effect.

Abstract:Objective: To explore and analyze the clinical efficacy of Chinese medicine combined with acupuncture and moxibustion in the treatment of insomnia. Method: 80 patients with primary insomnia were selected as the study sample, with 20 cases randomly selected as the control group and the rest as the observation group. The control group was treated with ordinary western medicine, while the observation group patients were treated with traditional Chinese medicine combined with acupuncture and moxibustion based on this syndrome differentiation. The comparison items were treatment effect, sleep quality, mental health, quality of life, specific sleep indicators, cerebral blood flow and neurotransmitters. Result: The treatment effectiveness showed that the observation group had a higher treatment effectiveness rate than the control group (P<0.05); The results of sleep quality showed that after treatment, the scores of the observation group were lower than those of the control group in seven dimensions: sleep quality, sleep time, sleep onset time, sleep efficiency, sleep disorders, hypnotic drugs, and daytime dysfunction score (P<0.05); The quality of life results showed that after treatment, the observation group had higher scores than the control group in eight dimensions: physiological function, physiological function, physical pain, health status, energy, social function, emotional function, and mental health (P<0.05); The results of slow wave sleep time and fast eye movement sleep time showed that after treatment, the HAMA and HAMD scores of the physiological mechanism in the observation group were lower than those in the control group (P<0.05); The results of cerebral blood flow and neurotransmitter indicators show that after treatment, glutamate γ- the peak systolic blood flow velocity of aminobutyric acid, vertebral artery, and basilar artery in the observation group was higher than that in the control group (P<0.05). Conclusion: The clinical treatment of Chinese medicine combined with acupuncture and moxibustion in the treatment of insomnia patients can significantly improve the clinical treatment effect, and improve the cerebral hemorrhage and neurotransmitter status of patients, promote the improvement of their physical and mental status, can more significantly improve the quality of sleep, reduce sleep difficulties, reduce the dosage of sleeping pills, which has important clinical application value.

Abstract:Objective: To compare the clinical therapeutic effect on coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) with insomnia between the combined treatment of baduanjin and auricular point sticking therapy and the medication with oral estazolam on the base of the conventional treatment. Methods: A total of 90 patients with COVID-19 accompanied with insomnia were randomly divided into an observation group (45 cases, 3 cases dropped off) and a control group (45 cases). In the observation group, baduanjin, a traditional Chinese fitness activity, was practiced everyday. Besides, auricular point sticking therapy was exerted at ear-shenmen (TF 4), subcortex (AT 4), heart (CO 15), occiput (AT 3), etc. These auricular points were pressed and kneaded three times a day, 30 s at each point each time, consecutively for 12 days. In the control group, estazolam tablets were prescribed for oral administration, 1 mg, once daily, consecutively for 12 days. Before and after treatment, the score of Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), the score of self-rating anxiety scale (SAS), the score of self-rating depression scale (SDS) and the score of symptoms in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) were observed in the two groups and the clinical therapeutic effect was evaluated. Results: After treatment, the scores of every item and the total scores in PSQI were all reduced as compared with those before treatment in the two groups (P<0.01). The scores of sleep time and sleep efficiency in the observation group were lower than those in the control group after treatment (P<0.05). SAS scores and SDS scores in the observation group and SAS score in the control group after treatment were all reduced as compared with those before treatment (P<0.01), and SDS score in the observation group was lower than that in the control group (P<0.01). After treatment, in the observation group, the score of each of the symptoms of TCM, i.e. unsound sleep, irritability and hot temper, profuse sputum and sticky feeling in the mouth, bitter taste in the mouth and foul breath, abdominal distention and poor appetite, as well as lassitude was reduced as compared with that before treatment successively (P<0.01), and the scores aforementioned (excepted for the unsound sleep) in the observation group were all lower than the control group (P<0.05). The total effective rates were 83.3% (35/42) in the observation group and 84.4% (38/45) in the control group, without statistical difference in comparison (P>0.05). Conclusion: The combined treatment of baduanjin and auricular point sticking therapy improves sleep quality, the conditions of anxiety and depression and the symptoms in TCM for patients of COVID-19 with insomnia. The therapeutic effect of this combined treatment is better than the oral administration of estazolam.

Abstract:Objective. Insomnia is a common and frequently occurring disease affecting the health of the population, which can seriously affect the work and life of patients. Drug treatment of insomnia has a rapid onset of action but has a large adverse reaction incidence rate. Traditional external treatment of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) belongs to a type of non-drug therapy, the treatment of insomnia has a long history, but the methods of non-drug treatment of TCM are diverse, and the efficacy is also different. This study investigated the efficacy of TCM non-drug therapy in the treatment of insomnia by means of literature search and meta-analysis. Methods. We searched Embase, Pubmed, OVid, WOS, CNKI, and CBM for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on the use of TCM as a non-drug treatment for primary insomnia. After doing a literature search according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, we used Cochrane rob v2.0 to assess the potential for bias in the studies that were included, and we did a combined analysis and assessment of the effectiveness of the therapy. Results. 16 articles were included in this study for quantitative analysis, and a total of 1285 patients participated in the study, including 643 patients in the intervention group and 642 patients in the control group. Meta-analysis showed that non-drug therapy of TCM could improve the treatment response rate of insomnia patients [OR = 6.88, 95%CI (4.40,10.74), Z = 8.48, P < 0.0001 ], reduce post-treatment PSQI total score [MD = −3.42, 95%CI (−4.62, −2.22), Z = −5.60, P < 0.0001 ], and improved patient anxiety [SMD = −1.25, 95%CI (−2.13, −0.37), Z = −2.78, P = 0.01 ] and degree of depression [SMD = −1.53, 95%CI (−2.84, −0.21), Z = −2.28, P = 0.02 ]. The heterogeneity survey showed that treatment time was one of the sources of heterogeneity. Meta-regression analysis revealed that publication year, patient age, sample size, and intervention characteristics were not specific factors affecting the combined results. Discussion. TCM non-drug therapy (acupuncture, moxibustion, massage, and auricular point pressing beans) can significantly improve the PSQI score of patients after treatment and improve the degree of anxiety and depression of patients, with significant effect, which is worthy of clinical promotion.

[Efficacy comparison of different points combination in the treatment of menopausal insomnia: a randomized controlled trial]

Abstract:Objective: To compare the efficacy of different points combination in the treatment of menopausal insomnia. Methods: Ninety-six cases of menopausal insomnia were randomized into 3 groups, Xinshu (BL 15), Shenshu (BL 23), Sishencong (EX-HN 1), Shenmen (HT 7), Sanyinjiao (SP 6) were chosen in the restore interaction between the heart and the kidney group (group A, 32 cases); Zhaohai (KI 6), Jiaoxin (KI 8), Shenmai (BL 62), Pucan (BL 61) were chosen in the acupuncturing qiao mai group (group B, 32 cases); auricular Shenmen (TF4) and sensitive spot at the distribution area of auricular vagus nervus were chosen in the ear acupuncture group (group C, 32 cases). Six days made one session and the treatments were finished after 4 courses. The polysomnography (PSG) and Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) were employed before and after treatment to evaluate the alleviation of insomnia. Results: The parameters of the sleep latency (SL), rapid wave sleep latency (RL) and sleep efficiency (SE) were significantly improved in the three groups, and the differences were statistically significant (P < 0.05, P < 0.01). The SL and awaking time (AT) in group C [SL (401.08 +/- 16.54) min and AT (4.87 +/- 2.64) times] were significantly superior to those in the other two groups [SL (50.36 +/- 18.47) min, (54.87 +/- 20.92) min, AT (5.98 +/- 2.11) times, (6.13 +/- 3.04) times, all P < 0.05]. The S(3+4) (%) in group C was also significantly higher than those in the other two groups (both P < 0.05). It was indicated by PSQI that the sleep quality of group C (0.78 +/- 0.12) was significantly superior to that in group B (1.32 +/- 0.29), the total score and cured and markedly effective rate in group C [(4.34 +/- 1.43), 68.8% (22/32)] were superior to those in group A [(7.48 +/- 3.09), 53.1% (17/32), both P < 0.05]. Conclusion: Ear acupuncture has a better curative effect than the restore interaction between the heart and the kidney group and acupuncturing qiao mai group, it is worth of being promoted.
The control study of integrated traditional Chinese and western medicine treating sleep disorders of the patients with stroke

Abstract:Objective To explore the effect of integrated traditional Chinese and western medicine treating sleep disorders of the patients with stroke. Methods According to the successively sequence in hospital,60 patients with stroke and sleep disorders were divided into the study group(n=30) and the control group(n=30),the two groups were given routine drug therapy of cerebrovascular disease,the control group were given alprazolam,on this basis,the study group was added traditional Chinese medicine treatment(including oral jieyu anshen capsule and traditional Chinese medicine foot bath),the treatment time last for 2 weeks.Before and after treatment,the sleep condition of the two groups was evaluated by the sleep curative effect evaluation standard and Pittsburgh sleep quality index(PSQI) scale. Results Before treatment,the PSQI score in the study group was(13.4 ±3.5) points,the PSQI score in the control group was(13.9 ±4.1),and there was no statistical difference between the two groups(t =0.51,P 0.05),after treatment,the PSQI score in the study group was(5.1±1.7)points,the PSQI score in the control group was(6.7±2.1)points,and there was a statistical difference between the two groups(t=3.24,P0.01);the total effective rate of the study group(93.3%) was higher than that in the control group(76.7%)(χ2=3.27,P0.05). Conclusion The effect of integrated traditional Chinese and western medicine treating sleep disorders of patients with stroke is better than only western medicine,it is worthy of clinical promotion and application.

Abstract:Objective To observe the curative effect of one finger massage on Baihui,Sishencong,Shimian and Fengchi on insomnia.Methods 116 cases were enrolled and randomly divided into 2 groups:treatment group and control group,58 in each.One finger massage on the 4 points:Baihui,Sishencong,Shimian and Fengchi respectively for a total time length of 20 minutes,once a day,was made to the cases in treatment group while oral administration of Alprazolam tablet,0.25 mg every night,was made to the cases in control group;Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) and polysomnography were applied to cases in both groups before treatment and 4 weeks after treatment,the scores and sleep parameters were statistically studied.Results There existed no statistical difference in PSQI scores and polysomnographic parameters between the cases in the 2 groups (P＞0.05).Conclusion One finger massage therapy can effectively improve the symptoms of insomnia and promote the recovery of the cases with senile insomnia.

Abstract:ObjectiveTo evaluate the clinical efficacy of the Governor Vessel-unblocking and mind-regulating acupuncture method plus repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in the treatment of post-stroke insomnia.MethodsA total of 72 patients with post-stroke insomnia were randomly divided into 2 groups, with 36 cases in each group. The control group received rTMS treatment with a frequency of 1 Hz and a motion threshold value of 90%. The observation group received acupuncture with Governor Vessel-unblocking and mind-regulating method based on the rTMS treatment of the control group. The points were Baihui (GV 20), Shenting (GV 24), Yintang (GV 29), Fengfu (GV 16), Sishencong (EX-HN 1), Shenmen (HT 7), Sanyinjiao (SP 6), Shenmai (BL 62) and Zhaohai (KI 6). The treatment was performed once a day for 5 d a week followed by 2 d of rest for 4 weeks. The improvements of Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), self-rating anxiety scale (SAS) and self-rating depression scale (SDS) scores were observed after treatment, and the clinical efficacy was compared between the two groups.ResultsAfter 4 weeks of treatment, the PSQI, SAS, and SDS scores of the two groups were all reduced, and the intra-group differences were statistically significant (all P<0.001). After treatment, the three scores in the observation group were all lower than those in the control group, and the differences between the two groups were statistically significant (P<0.05, P<0.05, P<0.001). There was a statistically significant difference between the observation group and the control group comparing the clinical efficacy (P<0.05).ConclusionThe therapeutic effect of the Governor Vessel-unblocking and mind-regulating acupuncture method plus rTMS in treating post-stroke insomnia is better than rTMS alone, and it can better improve the anxiety and depression of patients.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction The incidence of insomnia is getting higher and higher. Long-term insomnia seriously affects people’s health. Drug use is usually accompanied with adverse events. Both acupuncture and cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) have been proven to be safe and effective non-pharmacological treatments for insomnia. As the insomniacs’ bad sleep behavior and wrong cognition have not been effectively corrected, acupuncture has a quick effect, high patient compliance but unstable long-term efficacy, while CBT-I is complex, time-consuming, and expensive; additionally, patient compliance is low, and the number of trained therapists is limited, making it difficult to carry out. Therefore, this study aims to use the insomnia TCM system to construct a convenient and feasible traditional Chinese medicine e-aid cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (TCM-eCBT-I) for Chinese people, and combine the advantages of acupuncture and TCM-eCBT-I for maintaining long-term efficacy, and three treatments will be evaluated to provide clinicians with a more effective clinical protocol Methods and analysis This study is a single-center, open-label, randomized controlled trial. Ninety subjects will be recruited and randomly assigned to three groups: the acupuncture group, the TCM-eCBT-I group, and the acupuncture combined with TCM-eCBT-I group, in a ratio of 1:1:1. We will evaluate the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Dysfunctional Beliefs and Attitudes About Sleep Scale (DBAS), Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), sleep diary, Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA), Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD), and Fatigue Scale-14 Scale (FS-14) scales. All adverse reactions will be assessed through the ADVERSE event table. All outcomes will be evaluated online at 0 weeks, 4 weeks, 8 weeks, 16 weeks, and 28weeks. Ethics and dissemination This study has been approved by the Institutional Review Board of the Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine (2020 NL-018-02). Informed consent will be obtained from all the subjects. The results will be shared with sleep researchers, public, and relevant academic institutions through high-impact peer-reviewed publications. Clinical Study on Treatment of Parkinson's Disease with TCM Zishen Shugan and Qingre Yangxue Method

Abstract:Objective:To observe the curative effect of TCM Zishen Shugan and Qingre Yangxue method in treatment of Parkinson's disease.Methods:80 patients with Parkinson's disease were randomly divided into two groups.The control group was treated with pramipexole.The treatment group was treated with traditional Chinese medicine on the basis of that of the control group.The treatment group was treated with 1 course of treatment for 2 months.The values of the unified Parkinson's disease rating scale (UPDRS),the Webster score,the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) score,the continuity and stability of the sleep were measured.The Monterey Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) to determine the cognitive function.The beck anxiety inventory (BAI) score and the beck depression inventory score (BDI) were observed.The Serum pentraxin-3 levels and RANTES levels was compared.Results:The UPDRS score and Webster score were significantly lower in the two groups,and that of the treatment group was significantly lower than that of the control group (P ＜ 0.01).The effective rate of the treatment group was 92.5％ and that of the control group was 80.0％,and that of the treatment group was superior to that of the control group (P ＜0.01).There was a significant difference between the two groups in the continuity and stability of the sleep,with that of the treatment group being better (P ＜ 0.01).The scores of MoCA were higher than those before treatment,and the treatment group was significantly higher than that of the con trol group (P ＜ 0.01).The BAI score and BDI score of both groups were lower and that of the treatment group was significantly lower than that of the control group (P ＜ 0.01).The levels of serum pentraxin-3 and RANTES were lower in the two groups and that of the treatment group was significant lower than that of the control group (P ＜ 0.01).Conclusion:TCM Zishen Shugan and Qingre Yangxue method in treatment of Parkinson's disease with Chinese herbal medicine can improve the clinical symptoms,improve the quality of sleep,cognitive function,improve the mental status of depression and anxiety,and improve the prognosis of patients.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To compare the effect of acupuncture based on syndrome differentiation and estazolam in the treatment of chronic insomnia and its influence on cognitive function. METHODS A total of 90 patients with chronic insomnia were randomly divided into an acupuncture group and a medication group, 45 cases in each group. The acupuncture group was treated with acupuncture at Sishencong (EX-HN 1) and bilateral Shenmen (HT 7), Sanyinjiao (SP 6) combined with compatibility of acupoints based on syndrome differentiation, once a day for 6 d and then rest for 1 d, for a total of 4 weeks. The medication group was treated with oral estazolam tablets before bedtime, 1 tablet each time, for a total of 4 weeks. Before and after treatment, the scores of Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), mini-mental state examination (MMSE), Montreal cognitive assessment (MoCA) and auditory verbal memory test (AVMT) of the two groups were compared, and the effects were evaluated. RESULTS After treatment, the PSQI sub-item scores and total scores of the two groups were lower than those before treatment ( P<0.05 ), and above scores in the acupuncture group were lower than those in the medication group ( P<0.05 ); the scores of MMSE, MoCA and AVMT in the two groups were higher than those before treatment ( P<0.05 ), and the scores in the acupuncture group were higher than those in the medication group ( P<0.05 ). The total effective rate of the acupuncture group was 80.0% (36/45), which was higher than 53.3% (24/45) in the medication group (P<0.05). CONCLUSION Syndrome differentiation acupuncture can improve the sleep quality and cognitive function of patients with chronic insomnia, and the curative effect is better than that of estazolam.

Abstract:Background: Insomnia is a global disease with a high incidence and acupuncture therapy is a well appropriate method to treat insomnia. Shenmen (HT 7) and Sanyinjiao (SP 6) are the acupoints most commonly used to treat insomnia. Although they can obviously relieve the clinical symptoms of insomnia, it is unclear whether they must be used together, whether the combination of two acupoints may have a synergistic or antagonistic effect, and whether there is a primary or secondary relationship between the two points in the treatment of insomnia. Further studies are needed. Therefore, in this study, we are exploring the acupoint combination effect and biological mechanism of HT 7 and SP 6 in treating insomnia. Methods/design: This will be a parallel group randomized controlled trial. The study will recruit 120 patients with insomnia randomly assigned to a control group, an electroacupuncture on HT 7 group, an electroacupuncture on SP 6 group, and an electroacupuncture on HT 7 and SP 6 group. The allocation ratio is 1:1:1:1, with 30 subjects in each group. Meanwhile, ten healthy subjects who meet the study criteria will be recruited as the healthy control group. Patients in the intervention groups will be given ten rounds of electroacupuncture stimulation on the corresponding acupoints for 2 weeks, five times per week, with 2 days of rest between the two treatment courses. Patients in the control group will also receive the same two courses of ten rounds of compensatory acupuncture therapy after a 2-week waiting period for treatment. The major outcome measures of this study include the Sleep Dysfunction Rating Scale, the Insomnia Severity Index, Epworth Sleepiness Scale, the Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale, and the Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale, combined with the Measure Your Medical Outcome Profile, to evaluate insomnia and the emotional state of patients with insomnia. The secondary outcome measures include sleep composition monitored by polysomnography and measurements of acetylcholine, serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, melatonin, gamma-aminobutyric acid, and metabolic biomarkers in serum. Discussion: In this study, we are exploring the acupoint combination effect and biological mechanism of HT 7 and SP 6 in treating insomnia, which may provide evidence for the clinical application of acupuncture and acupoint selection in the treatment of insomnia. Curative Effect of Point Massage in Patients with Chronic Insomnia

Abstract:Objective To observe the influence of point massage at head and body points on sleep structure in chronic insomnia patients.Methods 45 patients were treated by point massage on the same main points including Anmian,Sishencong,Shenmen,Sanyinjiao temple for two to five minutes,once every day,abidingly for 20 to 30 days(averaged 24 ± 5 days).The change of patients' sleep structure before and after treatment was tested by poly-somnography analytical system.Self-control statistical methods were used to analyze the data.Results Before treatment,sleep structure of 45 cases were all incomplete; some patients missed S3 or S4.Being treated with point massage for 30 days,all patients got some improvement of falt and broken sleep structure.Sleep Monitoring showed that Point massage shortened latency period of sleep,lengthened the time of slow-wave sleep(S + S4 period),shorten the time of somnolence(S1 + S2 period),and relatively lengthened the time of NREMS and REMS (P＜ 0.05).Conclusion Point massage can repair the sleep structure,remold its continuity to a certain extent,and lengthen the time of slow-wave sleep,which is the main mechanism of improving sleep quality by acupuncture.
A systematic review with meta-analysis: Traditional Chinese tuina therapy for insomnia

Abstract:Background: With changes in the way of life and work, an increasing number of people are suffering from insomnia. In China, a traditional Chinese medicine method tuina is widely used for the treatment of insomnia. However, the evidence for tuina therapy for insomnia remains controversial. Therefore, this systematic review aimed to evaluate the effect of tuina therapy on the symptoms of patients with primary insomnia. Methods: From establishment to January 2022, a comprehensive literature search was conducted using seven electronic databases to identify randomized controlled trials of tuina therapy for insomnia. We used RevMan 5.4 software and the GRADEpro Guideline Development Tool to evaluate the quality of the included randomized controlled trials and perform the meta-analysis. The methodological quality of the included studies was assessed using the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool. Subgroup analysis was performed according to the different intervention methods. The I2 statistic was used to assess the heterogeneity. Results: Eighteen studies conducted from 2011 to 2021 were included, with a total of 1,471 patients. In terms of efficacy, tuina alone was superior to other treatments [odds ratio (OR), 3.46; 95% confidence interval (CI), 2.15, 5.55; P < 0.00001]; tuina combined with other treatments (acupuncture, scraping, auricular acupuncture, Suanzaoren decoction, estazolam) was more effective than other single therapies (OR, 3.99; 95% CI, 2.84, 5.61; P < 0.00001). In terms of Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Scale score, the improvement in insomnia patients by tuina alone was better than that of other treatments [standardized mean difference (SMD), -2.57; 95% CI, -2.98, -2.17; P < 0.00001], and tuina combined with other treatments (acupuncture, scraping, auricular point pressing, Suanzaoren decoction, estazolam) was better than other single therapies (SMD, -2.83; 95% CI, -2.98, -2.68; P < 0.00001). Conclusion: This meta-analysis revealed that tuina can significantly improve the clinical efficacy and sleep quality of patients with primary insomnia.
