Abstract:The vehicle–track interaction leads to the vibrating source for the prediction of train-induced building vibrations. To prevent modeling difficulties in the source part, this study proposes a practical back-analysis methodology for calculating underground train-induced building vibrations. The methodology combines the advantages of field measurements and numerical simulations. The fundamental concept of the hybrid methodology is to first create a virtualized moving source at the rail surface and subsequently modify it until the numerical predictions are consistent with the field measurements at the same locations. These locations are frequently selected at the ground surface or near the building foundation. Finally, this imaginary force can be used to predict the vibrations of buildings. The practicality of the hybrid methodology is verified by comparing the predicted vibrations of buildings with field test results. As an application of the proposed method, the transmission laws and characteristics of the vibrations in buildings are analyzed.
Predicting the Influence of Vibration from Trains in the Throat Area of a Metro Depot on Over-Track Buildings

Abstract:Urban land resources are scarce in China. To utilize land effectively and economically, many cities are developing over-track buildings above metro depots. The vibration from the entrance and exit lines of metro depots under an over-track platform would significantly impact over-track buildings. To study the influence of train vibration in the throat area of a metro depot on over-track buildings, a simulation model was established using a finite element method. The reasonability of the simulation method and parameter settings was verified through comparing the vibration simulation results with vibration test results in the throat area of a metro depot. Furthermore, the impact of parameters of over-track platform and building on indoor vibration induced by a train was quantitatively studied. According to simulation results, a prediction model was developed to predict the impact of train vibration on over-track buildings in metro depots. From the perspective of architectural planning and design, this study provides a theoretical and technical basis for the prevention and control of indoor vibrations in over-track buildings of urban metro depots.

Abstract:Journal of Vibration and Control, Ahead of Print. To predict the vibration transmission of over-track buildings and investigate the effectiveness of countermeasures, a fully coupled three-dimensional vibration prediction model for over-track buildings with consideration of the pile–soil interaction (PSI) was proposed. The accuracy of this prediction model was validated with field data from in-situ vibration monitoring in a metro depot. The consideration of PSI improved prediction accuracy about the vibration of over-track buildings. Then the effectiveness of different mitigation measures (rail damper and ballast mat) was investigated by this prediction model. It was found that the vibration of over-track buildings was dominated by vertical vibration components. Rail dampers significantly reduced the vibration in the high-frequency range above 80 Hz, while the vibration in the low-frequency range below 10 Hz was amplificated. The insertion loss of ballast mats reached 10 dB in the frequency range above 40 Hz except at the resonance frequency of the track, and mitigation effectiveness gradually decreased with increasing story height. This proposed method can predict the vibration level within over-track buildings and is an effective tool to guide the vibration mitigation design of over-track buildings.

Abstract:The potential construction of an elevated metro depot incorporating commercial and residential facilities is being considered in order to optimize land utilization. The vibration generated by trains operating on the concrete floor poses an intriguing challenge, as it directly propagates through the load-bearing structure to the over-track buildings without undergoing soil attenuation. Consequently, this phenomenon exerts a significant adverse impact on individuals' daily lives. The present study developed a numerical model to predict vibrations and evaluate the efficacy of two mitigation measures. The results demonstrate that both mitigation strategies effectively reduce vibration levels. However, it is important to acknowledge that the degradation of fastener stiffness should not be overlooked as it significantly impacts vibration characteristics. These findings offer valuable insights for the prediction and mitigation of vibrations in over-track buildings located above elevated metro depots during train operations on concrete floors.

Abstract:The vibration caused by railways is an environmental constraint in the development of over-track buildings. To study the influence of environmental vibration from the high-speed railway on over-track buildings, a finite element model including track, soil, and buildings was set up. Based on the vertical vibration acceleration sampled on the rail, the equivalent line load acting on rails vertically was obtained by a simplified model. On the basis of verifying the simulation model by measurement results, the vertical vibration induced by high-speed railways in over-track buildings was studied quantitatively. Through introducing correction terms relating to the thickness and height of the over-track platform, the story number, and the structure of the over-track building, an existing model released by the railway industry of China was improved. Compared with the existing model only being suitable for predicting vertical vibration of the first floor, the improved model can predict vertical vibration of different floors.
IN FORAGE INTAKE AND EFFICIENCY OF ANGUS COWS GRAZING FESCUE-LEGUME OR FESCUE PASTURES 1

Abstract:Forage intake, milk production, calf growth and efficiencies of milk production and calf growth were estimated for 198 lactations of 91 mature Angus cows grazing fescue-legume or fescue pastures. Cows calved January through March and calves were weaned in October in each of the 5 yr of the experiment. Cows grazing rescue-legume consumed 1.7 kg/d more (P<.01) dry matter (DM) that was 4.6 percentage units more (P<.01) digestible than cows grazing rescue. Cows grazing rescue-legume produced .4 kg/d more (P<.01) milk and weaned 23.8 kg more (P<.01) calf than cows grazing fescue. This increased production required an additional intake/cow-calf unit of 2.3 kg of digestible DM for each additional kilogram of calf weaned. Cows grazing fescue-legume were less efficient in calf production at least partially because they gained 33.3 kg more (P<.01) weight and 1.82 mm more (P<.01) fat cover at the 12th rib during lactation than cows grazing rescue. Cows producing relatively large amounts of milk consumed more digestible DM, weaned heavier calves, and were more efficient producers of milk and weaned calf regardless of pasture type grazed. The influence of milk production on these variables was more dramatic for cows grazing fescue than for those grazing rescue-legume. Cow type favoring maximum conversion of digestible DM intake by cow and calf to calf gain was different for the two types of pasture. The proximity of residential areas to traffic corridors has raised concerns among researchers regarding train-induced vibrations. Experimental studies have consistently shown variations in train-induced vibrations, which can be attributed to uncertainties and randomness in both the vibration source and propagation path. This study aims to investigate the influence factors and quantify their contributions to train-induced vibration variations through a comprehensive field measurement campaign and numerical simulations using random finite element models. During the field measurements, vibrations were recorded at the ground surface and the column base for a total of 53 passbys of the same type of metro train on parallel rail lines. Variations in train-induced vibrations caused by the source-to-receiver distance and spatially varied soil properties were analyzed and compared. Specifically, the investigation focused on the spatial variation of soil properties including elastic modulus, density and damping ratio in the topsoil and the second layer of clay, while simultaneously considering the influence of spatial variations of all three soil properties on the transmission of train-induced vibrations from the surface soil to the structural columns. Understanding these variations is crucial for the probabilistic assessment of building serviceability during train passbys. The findings of this research provide valuable insights for probabilistic prediction and evaluation of building vibration comfort.

Abstract:The advancement of urban rail transit is increasingly confronted with environmental challenges related to vibration and noise. To investigate the critical issues surrounding vibration propagation and the generation of structure-borne noise, a two-story frame building was selected for on-site measurements of both vibration and its induced structure-borne noise. The collected data were analyzed in both the time and frequency domains to explore the correlation between these phenomena, leading to the proposal of a hybrid prediction method for structural noise that was subsequently compared with measured results. The findings indicate that the excitation of structure-borne noise produces significant waveforms within sound signals. The characteristic frequency of the structure-borne noise is 25–80 Hz, as well as that of the train-induced vibration. Furthermore, there exists a positive correlation between structural vibration and structure-borne noise, whereby increased levels of vibration correspond to more pronounced structure-borne noise; additionally, indoor distribution patterns of structure-borne noise are non-uniform, with corner wall areas exhibiting greater intensity than central room locations. Finally, a hybrid prediction methodology that is both semi-analytical and semi-empirical is introduced. The approach derives dynamic response predictions of the structure through analytical solutions, subsequently estimating the secondary noise within the building's interior using a newly formulated empirical equation to facilitate rapid predictions regarding indoor building vibrations and structure-borne noises induced by subway train operations.

Abstract:In recent years, more attention had paid to the vibration and noise influence on nearby building caused by passing trains. The metro depot superstructure is directly built above the train garage, the vibration of superstructure is very serious when the trains get into or go out of the garage. In order to investigate the law of vibration influence on metro depot and superstructure, a field measurement has been carried out and a 3D finite element model of building-platform-column is established. The attenuation law and degree of environmental vibration influence is obtained by analyzing the measurement date and calculation results. The results show that the vibration response of superstructure is obvious, the vibration level is related with the running state of train. The vibration response is more serious when trains pull out of the garage than go into garage, because the running speed is faster when trains pull out of garage. The vibration intensity does not monotonically increase or monotonically reduce with the increasing of floor and it tends to change wave upon wave with the increasing of floor.

Abstract:This study presents a methodology for the probabilistic analysis of the environmental vibrations induced by high-speed trains considering the uncertainty of soil parameters. A deterministic ground vibration prediction model with high calculation efficiency is developed to evaluate the train-induced ground vibration. Then uncertain soil parameters are treated as random variables based on the field measurement results. With the aid of Monte Carlo simulation, probabilistic analysis is performed to find the statistical information of the uncertain environmental vibration level and to estimate its probability of exceeding the allowable vibration limit. It is found that the variability of the train-induced vibration level becomes remarkable as the soil variability and train speed increase. Without considering soil variability, the deterministic analysis would give wrong information for decision makers when evaluating the vibration limit exceedance of train-induced ground vibration.

Abstract:The paper presents an efficient method for estimating the dynamic response of buildings due to train operations in tunnel. The proposed method involves four models to consider the transmission path in the train-track-tunnel-soil-pile-building chain: the vehicle model, track-tunnel-soil model, building model, and soil-structure interaction model. A series of theoretical methods are employed, including the multibody dynamic method for wheel-rail interaction, the double Euler-Bernoulli beam method for track structures, the wave decomposition method and transfer matrix method for vibration propagation in soil, the impedance method for building vibration transmission. Validation is conducted through measurements of train-induced ground-borne vibrations and building vibrations in Guangzhou, China. The estimated vibrations demonstrated good agreement with measured vibrations, indicating the feasibility of the proposed method. Parametric studies are subsequently conducted to investigate the influence of spatial relationships between tunnel and pile on building vibrations. The presence of piles results in dissipation and attenuation of vibration energy due to the kinematic interaction. The spatial distribution of the wave field within the soil can significantly impact the coupling loss between the soil and structure. The research findings facilitate a clear comprehension of vibration transmission mechanisms from source to receiver, which are readily applicable in engineering practice for engineers.

Abstract:In order to improve the efficiency of using land resources and relieve the tension of urban land, the property covered by metro depot rapidly carries out planning and construction in many cities. However, train-induced vibration will propagate upward due to the soil-foundation dynamic interaction, which may affect the vibration comfort of the residents of the overlying property. In this paper, a metro depot superstructure of Foshan Metro was selected to study the environment vibration impact. Based on the finite element method to predict the building vibration. Thus, it lays a foundation for the prediction and evaluation of environmental vibration of metro depot with cover complex. The results found that the proposed model could simulate the vibration attenuation law caused by subway train well in time domain. Both vibration and structural radiated noise are within the standard limits, indicating that the vibration caused by train operation has little influence on buildings.

Abstract:The environmental vibration problems caused by underground trains have recently received widespread attention. An accurate prediction method is essential for vibration assessment around metro lines and for implementing necessary vibration isolation measures. Previous studies have indicated that a hybrid method that combines numerical modelling and experimental measurements can effectively reduce prediction uncertainty with wide adaptability. However, few studies have reported hybrid methods for predicting environmental vibrations caused by underground trains. However, these methods are limited owing to inconvenient excitation experiments in tunnels. Therefore, this study proposes a convenient hybrid prediction method. Subsequently, an experimental study was performed to validate the applicability of the Betti–Rayleigh dynamic reciprocal theorem to the proposed method. A case study was conducted using numerical simulations to verify the feasibility and accuracy of the proposed hybrid method. Finally, a numerical study was conducted to investigate the influence of adjacent hammer spacing and line-source length on the prediction results. The study results demonstrated that the Betti–Rayleigh dynamic reciprocal theorem is applicable to the proposed hybrid prediction method. Hybrid prediction method has been proven to exhibit high accuracy. The adjacent hammer spacing and line-source length can affect the prediction accuracy. Accordingly, the adjacent hammer spacing should be smaller than 19.2 m, and the line-source length should be larger than 80 m in underground train-induced vibration prediction projects under similar conditions.

Abstract:The accurate prediction of ground-borne vibration induced by underground trains is needed to assess the effects of vibration. However, there are inaccuracy and uncertainty for current empirical and numerical approaches due to theoretical assumptions, simplifying modeling and uncertainty of parameters. To reduce the inaccuracy and uncertainty, this paper presents a prediction strategy based on the transfer function experiment in a borehole or tunnel. The frequency-domain dynamic response in the ground can be determined from the excitation forces applied on the tunnel invert and the transfer functions in the experiment. A vehicle-track model is established to obtain the excitation forces, and the transfer functions are measured in the hammer impact experiments in a borehole or tunnel. Validation of this approach is provided by comparison to the measured response on a metro line in Beijing. It is shown that more accurate prediction can be expected by this approach as the actual transfer characteristics of vibration in the ground are measured.

Abstract:The metro tunnel lines built in a soft soil area may suffer from tunnel differential settlement due to the high compressibility of soft soil, the engineering constructions nearby tunnel lines, and the cyclic load of metro trains. In this paper, a dynamic coupling model for a metro train-monolithic bed track system under tunnel differential settlement is established. A cosine function is introduced to simulate a real settlement curve measured from a metro tunnel in southern China, and the vibration performance of the train-track system under tunnel settlements is investigated in both the time domain and frequency domain. Based on the standards for the train safety and passengers’ comfort, the speed limit for the metro train traveling on a monolithic bed track with different settlement distributions are concluded. The present research could be useful for the operation and maintenance of metro tunnels in soft soil areas.

Abstract:With the rapid development of high-speed railway (HSR) in China, the problem of environmental vibration induced by HSR train has attracted critical concern. In this paper, a combination vibration reduction (CVR) strategy of hollow-closed-wall in-filled trench (HIT) and elastic bearing (EB) is proposed to decrease environmental vibration induced by HSR train, in which the depth of HIT could be well controlled to benefit the practical construction and economic cost. Based on the multi-body dynamics and finite element theory, HSR environmental vibration system is established and then divided into two sub-models including the 'train-track-bridge' vibration source sub-model and the 'pile-soil' vibration propagation sub-model. The two sub-models are connected via the force balance condition of the pier bottom. The verification of numerical models is conducted by comparing with the empirical formula and the ground data in the references. Then the attenuation law of environmental vibration is analyzed, and the vertical component is shown to be dominant in the HSR environmental vibration. On this basis, numerical simulations are performed to analyze the environmental vibration reduction under three strategies, namely the HIT, EB, and CVR. The results show that the HIT presents a distinct vibration reduction effect in the frequency range above 4 Hz and the vibration reduction becomes more obvious as the HIT's depth increases. However, the depth should be larger than 8 m to satisfy the code requirement; the EB presents an obvious reduction in the frequency range above 8 Hz; the CVR strategy not only further decrease the environmental vibration, but also effectively reduce the HIT's depth. By numerical analysis, the combination strategy of 6 m deep HIT and 2200 kN/mm vertical stiffness EB is recommended in the HSR environmental vibration reduction, which could also satisfy the limit of Chinese railway code.

Abstract:The problems of ground-borne vibration induced by running metro trains are becoming a major concern. Considering the uncertainty in train–track–tunnel–soil–building system, the vibration evaluation based on long-term monitoring is required to investigate the effect of vibration on the residents, sensitive instruments, and buildings to provide evidence for vibration mitigation design. In this study, a deep learning based approach is proposed to identify train induced vibration segments efficiently for subsequent vibration evaluations. Furthermore, an experiment is presented in which vibration monitoring on the tunnel wall, ground surface and floors in a building due to metro train passages were performed. The proposed identification approach is validated in the experiment, and then the characteristics and sources of the uncertainty for train induced ground-borne vibration are analysed to improve the quality of vibration evaluation.

Abstract:Train-induced feelable vibrations can bring side effects to people living or working in the building, as well as to operation of precise equipment. As massive construction of over-track buildings above metro depots prevails in megacities, impacts from train-induced feelable vibration take more concern. Four standard-designed 4-story steel-framed offices above the throat area in the Qianhai metro depot in Shenzhen, China, are studied in this research. The field measurements were conducted to investigate the influences of track alignment and track location in the throat area on vibration responses of over-track buildings. Detailed vibration analyses using the finite element method have been conducted. Train-induced floor vibration assessments on human comfort are carried out based on a total of 54 train pass-bys operated in the morning and evening and on different tracks. It can be found that the track alignment primarily affected the higher frequency components of train-induced vibrations, where curved trackinduced vibrations have larger amplitudes. The variance of train-induced building vibrations among pass-bys on different track locations was reduced compared with that of ground vibrations because of the averaging effects caused by multiple transmitting paths within the massive platform and stiff transfer structures. Train-induced acceleration levels at mid-floor can be 20–25 dB larger than those near columns at floor resonance frequencies which are dependent on the structural design. This research gives a comprehensive insight into train-induced vibrations within low-rise steel-framed buildings above the throat area in the metro depot, which is a valuable reference for assessments before the construction of future similar over-track communities.

Abstract:Journal of Low Frequency Noise, Vibration and Active Control, Ahead of Print. Aiming at the problem of vibration caused by underground high-speed railways, this paper proposes a vibration prediction method based on the multi-point transfer ratio in the frequency domain. The transmission information of vibration signals from the tunnel to the surface was obtained by an in situ hammer excitation test, and the acceleration response near the vibration source was calculated via high-precision vehicle-track coupling analysis and a finite element model of the tunnel. Then, the superposition operation was carried out in consideration of the position change of the train, and the surface vibration response caused by the underground high-speed railway was finally predicted. An in situ vibration test was carried out near an underground high-speed railway line and the measured data were compared with the predicted data. The results demonstrate that the predicted and measured time domain peaks were similar, and the main vibration frequencies were both located in the range of 30–70 Hz. Moreover, the 1/3-octave spectra were also very similar, and the root mean square error of acceleration and the Z vibration level error were less than 1.9%. The comparison results show that the proposed method can be used to predict the vibration response caused by the operation of underground high-speed railways with high precision.

Abstract:Vibration induced by metro operation on the underground line is transmitted to the buildings above the line, which adversely affects on the normal life and work of human in the building. To study this problem, based on the plate-shell vibration theory, a plate-column-plate coupled model is constructed to analyze the influence of plate thickness, plate elastic modulus and column arrangement on the vibration in mechanism firstly. Relying on a practical engineering problem, two models are established, namely a train-track coupled dynamic model and a monolithic track bed-tunnel-soil-building model, loading fastener force from the train-track coupled dynamic model on the monolithic track bed, vibration propagates to high-rise building through soil-building coupling. Field test is conducted to verify the reliability of the numerical model. On the basis, the vibration law of building under different basement floor thicknesses, basement floor material and arrangement of non-permanent columns are studied. Results show that changing the basement design parameters has different effects. The Z vibration level of building floor decreases with the increase of basement floor thickness. Basement floor thickness increases by 0.02 m, the Z vibration level of the floor decreased by 1.4–2.2 dB at most. The decrease of elastic modulus leads to a slight decrease of the Z vibration level of building, the change is less than 1 dB. Without changing the arrangement of basement load-bearing columns, reducing non-permanent structural columns significantly reduces the Z vibration level, with attenuation of up to 5.1 dB.
