Abstract:Background: Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have created safety problems for the publics. Assessments of the mental workload for UAV operations are essential to realize the causes of UAV accidents. Objective: To test the following hypotheses: i. mission difficulty in UAV operation affects both subjective and objective measures of mental workload; ii. mission difficulty affects number of failures in UAV operation. Methods: Fourteen male adults participated as UAV operators after attending a UAV training course. They performed four flight missions of different difficulty levels. During their flight missions, their heart rate and inter-beat interval (IBI) were collected. Upon completing each flight mission, the participants gave subjective ratings of mental workload using three commonly adopted assessment tools. The time of flight and number of failures in flight operations were also recorded. Results: The results showed that mission difficulty affected the scores of all three assessment tools significantly. Mission difficulty also affected number of failures and IBI significantly. The scores of the three assessment tools were highly correlated (ρ= 0.7 to 0.83, p < 0.001) with one another. The results of the three subjective ratings were also consistent with that of the IBI data. Conclusions: High mental workload in UAV operation could lead to poor flight performance.

Abstract:In this study, an integrated approach based on MRQ (Multiple Resources Questionnaire), NASA-TLX (NASA-task load index), SWAT (Subjective Workload Assessment Technique) and VACP (visual, auditory, cognitive, psychomotor) model was applied to the subjective measurement workloads of 22 commercial aviation pilots, which aviated the Airbus A320 in the approach phase in two scenarios—ILS CAT I (clear-air turbulence I) and CAVOK (ceiling and visibility OK). Three subjective scales were used to evaluate the pilot workload from different levels of flight tasks. (1) Modified NASA-TLX was used to measure total workload in the approach phase; (2) SWAT was used to measure the workload of 11 subtasks in the approach phase; (3) The newly designed BCMS (Behavior-Cognitive Model Scale) based on VACP model and MRQ by this study was used to measure specific resources in each subtask. Results in this study suggested that NASA-TLX factor structure should be modified, which is not suitable for highly automation in commercial aviation. The reasons why resources occupied cause higher workload in information processing procedure are found by comparing results of VACP model used to pre-test and SWAT used to post-test, which can be taken as reference to improve the design and training programs to some extent. BCMS was used to analyze pilot mental resources which have a high correlation between the total workload in each subtask and improve diagnosticity and reduce implementation difficulty. There were significant differences in some perceptive and cognitive resources among three typical pilots.
The effect of mental schema evolution on mental workload measurement: an EEG study with simulated quadrotor UAV operation

Abstract:Abstract Objective: Mental workload is the result of the interactions between the demands of an operation task and the skills, behavior and perception of the performer. Working under a high mental workload can significantly affect an operator’s ability to choose optimal decisions. However, the effect of mental schema, which reflects the level of expertise of an operator, on mental workload remains unclear. Here, we propose a theoretical framework for describing how the evolution of mental schema affects mental workload from the perspective of cognitive processing. Approach: we recruited 51 students to participate in a 10-day simulated UAV flight training. The EEG PSD metrics were used to investigate the changes in neural responses caused by variations in the mental workload at different stages of mental schema evolution. Main results: It was found that mental schema evolution influenced the direction and change trends of the frontal theta PSD, parietal alpha PSD, and central beta PSD. Initially, before the mental schema was formed, only the frontal theta PSD increased with increasing task difficulty; when the mental schema was initially being developed, the frontal theta PSD and the parietal alpha PSD decreased with increasing task difficulty, while the central beta PSD increased with increasing task difficulty. Finally, as the mental schema gradually matured, the trend of the three indicators did not change with increasing task difficulty. However, differences in the frontal PSD became more pronounced across task difficulty levels, while differences in the parietal PSD narrowed. Significance: Our results describe the relationship between the EEG power spectrum and the mental workload of UAV operators as the mental schema evolved. This suggests that EEG indicators can not only provide more accurate measurements of mental workload but also provide insights into the development of an operator's skill level.

Pilots' mental workload variation when taking a risk in a flight scenario: a study based on flight simulator experiments

Abstract:Pilots' operation behavior in flight is associated with their mental state variables such as workload, situation awareness, stress, etc. The objective of this study was to investigate the dynamic process of mental workload for pilots who perform a risky flight task in simulated scenarios. Two empirical experiments were conducted to address this issue. In experiment one, 19 trainee pilots divided into high-risk and low-risk groups performed a target-search task in a low-altitude visual flight. The results showed a statistically significant interaction between groups and segments for heart rate variability (HRV). The same pattern of physiological results was replicated among participants in experiment two, in which 19 airline pilots completed an approach with low visibility. These findings highlighted the relationship between mental workload variation and risk-taking behavior, which could be considered in improving pilot selection and training to improve flight safety.

Abstract:Objective The objective of our work was to assess the impact of flight conditions by aircraft type on the workload estimated using NASA-Task Load Index (NASA-TLX). Background Learning about subjective workload is important for assessing the impact of a pilot's work environment on their performance in the cockpit. This is an important element of flight safety and includes the prevention of aviation accidents. Methods The study included 146 military pilots that fly the following aircrafts: flying fast-jet (21), fixed-wing (24), and rotary-wing (101). The NASA-TLX questionnaire was used to assess workload and pilots were asked to determine the level of workload resulting from flying under the following conditions: daytime flight (VFR), night-vision flight performed under Night Visual Flight Rules (NVFR), and night-vision flight using night-vision goggles (NVGs). Results The highest level of workload was consistently attributed to flights performed under NVG conditions. NVFR conditions were rated as the most burdensome, while VFR conditions were rated as the least burdensome. Fast-jet pilots rated their mental performance and effort workload as significantly higher than pilots of other aircrafts. Conclusion Pilots' perceived workload is influenced by both flight conditions and the type of aircraft they fly. Workload knowledge is important for flight safety and should be taken into account during training and flight-task planning. Application The results of our study can be useful both in flight training and in work on the effectiveness of the human-machine interface. Awareness of one's own limitations due to the work environment can help improve flight safety.

Abstract:Effective mental workload recognition is of great significance for improving task performance and reducing accidents. Although prior research has achieved approximately 95% accuracy using electroencephalography (EEG), it is difficult to transplant into actual task scenarios due to the low portability of the device. Here, we introduce a mental workload recognition solution to give consideration to high recognition accuracy and portability. Heart rate variability (HRV) was extracted from the electrocardiogram (ECG) signals of 26 participants during simulated flight tasks, and the sensitive features were screened out using the generalized linear mixed model. Then, the three mental workload levels were classified and evaluated in combination with the machine learning method. Our solution achieved an accuracy of 98% for subject-independent mental workload recognition.

Abstract:Objective: The event-related potential (ERP) methods based on laboratory control scenes have been widely used to measure the level of mental workload during operational tasks. In this study, both task difficulty and test time were considered. Auditory probes (ignored task-irrelevant background sounds) were used to explore the changes in mental workload of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) operators during task execution and their ERP representations. Approach: 51 students participated in a 10-day training and test of simulated quadrotor UAV. During the experiment, background sound was played to induce ERP according to the requirements of oddball paradigm, and the relationship between mental workload and the amplitudes of N200 and P300 in ERP was explored. Main results: Our study shows that the mental workload during operational task training is multi-dimensional, and its changes are affected by bottom-up perception and top-down cognition. The N200 component of the ERP evoked by the auditory probe corresponds to the bottom-up perceptual part; while the P300 component corresponds to the top-down cognitive part, which is positively correlated with the improvement of skill level. Significance: This paper describes the relationship between ERP induced by auditory probes and mental workload from the perspective of multi-resource theory and human information processing. This suggests that the auditory probe can be used to reveal the mental workload during the training of operational tasks, which not only provides a possible reference for measuring the mental workload, but also provides a possibility for identifying the development of the operator's skill level and evaluating the training effect.

Abstract:This paper investigates the pilot control strategy and workload associated with the manned electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft. This research aims to identify control strategies that are both rational and effective in reducing the pilot's workload. Although the Cooper-Harper rating (HQR, Handling Quality Rating) remains the prevalent benchmark for assessing pilot workload, its subjective nature often complicates the precise quantitative identification of the key factors influencing workload. This study introduces an assessment method for pilot control workload using wavelet transform to evaluate pilot workload, focusing on the correlation between pilot control magnitude, frequency components, and complexity. We begin with a review of control action analysis methods in both time and frequency domains. Subsequently, by selecting an appropriate wavelet function and a sampling frequency, we develop the assessment method for pilot control strategy and workload based on wavelet analysis. Finally, we assess pilot workload using real pilot inputs with HQRs obtained from helicopter flight tests and tilt-rotor aircraft conversion simulations. The results indicate that this approach is capable of precisely pinpointing the frequency components and energy levels within pilot control actions throughout different time periods. Furthermore, a significant correlation is observed between pilot control characteristics, frequency components, and HQRs. Consequently, the developed approach provides a rational framework for quantifying and analyzing pilot workload in a range of eVTOL aircraft scenarios.

Abstract:Background: The aircraft cockpit is a highly intensive human-computer interaction system, and its design directly affects flight safety. Objective: To optimize the display interface design in complex flight tasks, the present study aimed to propose a dynamic conceptual framework and a timeline task analysis method for the quantization of the dynamic time effect of mental workload and the influencing factors of task types in the mental workload prediction model. Methods: The multi-factor mental workload prediction model based on attention resource allocation was integrated to establish the dynamic prediction model of mental workload. The ergonomics simulation experiment was carried out by recording the data on the performance of embedded subtasks, National Aeronautics and Space Administration-Task Load Index (NASA-TLX) subjective evaluation, and eye tracking. Results: The results indicated that the prediction model had a good prediction accuracy and effectiveness under different simulated interfaces and complex tasks, and the real-time monitoring of pilots' mental workload state was realized. Conclusion: In conclusion, the prediction model and the experimental method could be applied to avoid the overload of the pilot throughout the flight phase by optimizing the display interface and adjusting the flight task.

Abstract:Understanding the operator's cognitive workload is crucial for efficiency and safety in human-machine systems. This study investigated how cognitive workload modulates cardiac autonomic regulation during a standardized military simulator flight. Military student pilots completed simulated flight tasks in a Hawk flight simulator. Continuous electrocardiography was recorded to analyze time and frequency domain heart rate variability (HRV). After the simulation, a flight instructor used a standardized method to evaluate student pilot's individual cognitive workload from video-recorded flight simulator data. Results indicated that HRV was able to differentiate flight phases that induced varying levels of cognitive workload; an increasing level of cognitive workload caused significant decreases in many HRV variables, mainly reflecting parasympathetic deactivation of cardiac autonomic regulation. In conclusion, autonomic physiological responses can be used to examine reactions to increased cognitive workload during simulated military flights. HRV could be beneficial in assessing individual responses to cognitive workload and pilot performance during simulator training.

Abstract:To investigate whether high cognitive task load (CTL) for aircraft pilots can be identified by analysing heart-rate variability, electrocardiograms were recorded while cadet pilots ( n = 68) performed the plane tracking, anti-gravity pedalling, and reaction tasks during simulated flight missions. Data for standard electrocardiogram parameters were extracted from the R–R-interval series. In the research phase, low frequency power (LF), high frequency power (HF), normalised HF, and LF/HF differed significantly between high and low CTL conditions ( p < .05 for all). A principal component analysis identified three components contributing 90.62% of cumulative heart-rate variance. These principal components were incorporated into a composite index. Validation in a separate group of cadet pilots ( n = 139) under similar conditions showed that the index value significantly increased with increasing CTL ( p < .05). The heart-rate variability index can be used to objectively identify high CTL flight conditions. Practitioner summary: We used principal component analysis of electrocardiogram data to construct a composite index for identifying high cognitive task load in pilots during simulated flight. We validated the index in a separate group of pilots under similar conditions. The index can be used to improve cadet training and flight safety. Abstract:OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Er:YAG laser and conventional periodontal therapy in the treatment of acute streptococcal gingivitis both clinically and microbiologically. BACKGROUND DATA This case report describes a 2-year follow-up of a 30-year-old, female, chronic periodontitis patient, presenting severe gingival inflammation, sensitivity, pain, and acute gingival lesions that were treated with Er:YAG laser and conventional hand and ultrasonic instruments. MATERIALS AND METHODS Before the initial periodontal treatment, microbiological samples were taken from the lesion sites with sterile paper points from the sulcuses bilaterally, and excisional biopsies were obtained from the lesions. Following diagnostic tests, the lesions were identified as acute streptococcal gingivitis. Following the measurement of clinical indices, initial periodontal therapy was performed with Er:YAG laser on the right side and conventional hand and ultrasonic instruments on the left side, which were performed as two sessions at weekly intervals. As an adjunct to mechanical periodontal therapy, 500 mg amoxicillin was prescribed t.i.d. for a week. RESULTS Microbiological samples grew mostly Streptococcus sp. and black pigmented obligate anaerobic bacteria. The histopathological examination revealed acanthosis, papillomatosis, and spongiotic lesions in the keratinized stratified squamous epithelium; infiltration of polymorphonuclear neutrophils, lymphocytes, and macrophages and plasma cells in the connective tissue; infiltration and accumulation of polymorphonuclear neutrophils in the epithelium, especially in the spongiotic lesions; and formation of microabscess-like clusters. After the initial periodontal treatment, clinical and microbiological measurements were repeated and reductions in clinical indices and the number of microorganisms were observed. both treatment modalities gave similar results, and no recurrences were observed during the 2-year follow-up. CONCLUSION Er:YAG laser seems to be promising and as effective as conventional periodontal therapy in the treatment of acute streptococcal gingivitis.

Abstract:Vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft do not require a prolonged runway, thus allowing them to land almost anywhere. In recent years, their flexibility has made them popular in development, research, and operation. When compared to traditional fixed-wing aircraft and rotorcraft, VTOLs bring unique challenges as they combine many maneuvers from both types of aircraft. Pilot workload is a critical factor for safe and efficient operation of VTOLs. In this work, we conduct a user study to collect multimodal data from 28 pilots while they perform a variety of VTOL flight tasks. We analyze and interpolate behavioral patterns related to their performance and perceived workload. Finally, we build machine learning models to estimate their workload from the collected data. Our results are promising, suggesting that quantitative and accurate VTOL pilot workload monitoring is viable. Such assistive tools would help the research field understand VTOL operations and serve as a stepping stone for the industry to ensure VTOL safe operations and further remote operations.

Abstract:Future airspace is expected to become more congested with additional in-service cargo and commercial flights. Pilots will face additional burdens in such an environment, given the increasing number of factors that they must simultaneously consider while completing their work activities. Therefore, care and attention must be paid to the mental workload (MWL) experienced by operating pilots. If left unaddressed, a state of mental overload could affect the pilot's ability to complete his or her work activities in a safe and correct manner. This study examines the impact of two different cockpit display interfaces (CDIs), the Steam Gauge panel and the G1000 Glass panel, on novice pilots' MWL and situational awareness (SA) in a flight simulator-based setting. A combination of objective (EEG and HRV) and subjective (NASA-TLX) assessments is used to assess novice pilots' cognitive states during this study. Our results indicate that the gauge design of the CDI affects novice pilots' SA and MWL, with the G1000 Glass panel being more effective in reducing the MWL and improving SA compared with the Steam Gauge panel. The results of this study have implications for the design of future flight deck interfaces and the training of future pilots.

Integrating Ergonomics Into Safety Management: A Conceptual Risk Assessment Model for Tower Controllers at Multiple Altitudes

Abstract:Plateau and high plateau airports aggravate tower controllers' vulnerability, facing high safety risks, yet the risk evaluation paradigm to manage safety at multiple altitudes still lacks. The study aimed to investigate the effects of altitudes on controllers' mental workload and fatigue to assess the safety risk and introduced voices, mental workload, and fatigue, into a conceptual risk assessment model. Controllers from the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) conducted the experimental tasks, reporting mental workload and perception fatigue across three altitudes: 0 m, 2243 m, and 3569.7 m. With experimental data: this research (1) quantitatively compared the voice feature differences with feature engineering, and an image quality measure, (2) explored the effects of altitude, sleep, and fatigue, (3) tested the effects of altitude and task complexity on mental workload, and (4) evaluated the airport safety risks under ergonomic factors. Notably, the study revealed that Log-Mel spectrograms outperformed Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC) in severe fatigue detection. Altitude and task complexity had significant main effects on the mental workload, but altitude had no significant moderator effects on the relationship between sleep and fatigue. The simulation results show that under the low task complexity, the operation risk is low over three airport elevations (with the human error rate $< mathrm { }{10}^{-3}$ ), whereas under the high task complexity, the operation risk increased with altitudes (from $1.73times {10}^{-3}$ to $mathrm { 1.02}times {10}^{-1}$ ). Together, these results suggest that ergonomic factors influenced airport safety risk at multiple altitudes and promisin- real-time fatigue detection with voice features at different altitudes.

Abstract:<p>Pilot mental fatigue is a growing concern in the aviation field due to its significant contributions to human errors and aviation accidents. Long work hours, sleep loss, circadian rhythm disruption, and workload are well-known reasons, but there is a need to accurately detect pilot mental fatigue to improve aviation safety. However, due to the highly restricted cockpit environment and the complex nature of mental fatigue, feasible in-flight detection remains under-investigated. The objective of this study is to define a promising approach for mental fatigue detection based on psychophysiological measurements in flying-relevant environments. Eleven participants engaged in a simulated flight experiment, where several conventional heart rate variability (HRV) and ocular indices were examined to study their relevance to mental fatigue. Additionally, a Toeplitz Inverse Covariance-Based Clustering (TICC) method was performed to determine the ground truth, after which supervised machine learning was adopted to enable automated mental fatigue detection using HRV and eye metrics. Results showed that HRV and eye metrics were sensitive to the mental fatigue induced by prolonged flight-relevant tasks. The TICC method helped determine the ground truth for mental fatigue and identify its three distinct levels. Furthermore, a supervised learning-based detection of mental fatigue was achieved using a support vector machine with the greatest detection accuracy of 91.8%. The findings and methodology of this study provide new insights into the fatigue countermeasures in restricted cockpit environment and lay the groundwork for further explorations into the mental fatigue induced by prolonged flight missions.</p>

The Impact of Different Levels of Autonomy and Training on Operators’ Drone Control Strategies

Abstract:Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), also known as drones, have extensive applications in civilian rescue and military surveillance realms. A common drone control scheme among such applications is human supervisory control, in which human operators remotely navigate drones and direct them to conduct high-level tasks. However, different levels of autonomy in the control system and different operator training processes may affect operators’ performance in task success rate and efficiency. An experiment was designed and conducted to investigate such potential impacts. The results showed us that a dedicated supervisory drone control interface tended toward increased operator successful task completion as compared to an enhanced teleoperation control interface, although this difference was not statistically significant. In addition, using Hidden Markov Models, operator behavior models were developed to further study the impact of operators’ drone control strategies as a function of differing levels of autonomy. These models revealed that people with both supervisory and enhanced teleoperation control training were not able to determine the right control action at the right time to the same degree that people with just training in the supervisory control mode. Future work is needed to determine how trust plays a role in such settings.
Study on Situation Awareness under Different Mental Workloads

Abstract:The aim of the present study was to examine the situation awareness (SA) changes under various mental workloads and to explore the sensitive physiological indicators to SA under this circumstance. Twenty-four participants were recruited to perform tasks under three kinds of mental workload based on the Multi Attribute Task Battery (MATB) II platform. Performance measures, situational awareness global assessment technology (SAGAT), three dimensions situation awareness rating technology (3D-SART), eye movement and electroencephalograph (EEG) data were recorded. Results indicated that, the SAGAT scores and 3D-SART scores decreased significantly with the increasing of mental workload. In addition, the two scores both have a medium negative relationship with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Task Load Index (NASA-TLX) scores. The SAGAT scores have a medium positive relationship with the high alpha relative power at C4 electrode site. What's more, The SAGAT scores have a medium negative relationship with the Nearest Neighbor Index (NNI) under high mental workload condition. In conclusion, under different mental workload levels, (1) Mental workload has a medium negative relationship with SA. (2) NNI and high alpha relative power may be possible sensitive indicators to SA. The present study can provide a reference for designing the display and control interface in cockpit and for optimization of man-machine functional allocation.
