Abstract:For the first time, from early 2019 to the end of 2022, Mars’ shallow and deep interiors have been explored by seismology with the InSight mission. Thanks to the performances of its seismometers and the quality of their robotic installation on the ground, 1,319 seismic events have been detected, including about 90 marsquakes at teleseismic distances, with Mw from 2.5 to 4.7 and at least 6 impacts, the largest ones with craters larger than 130 m. A large fraction of these marsquakes occur in Cerberus Fossae, demonstrating active regional tectonics. Records of pressure-induced seismic noise and signals from the penetration of a heat flow probe have provided subsurface models below the lander. Deeper direct and secondary body wave phase travel time, receiver function, and surface wave analysis have provided the first interior models of Mars, including crustal thickness and crustal layering, mantle structure, thermal lithospheric thickness, and core radius and state. ▪ With InSight's SEIS (Seismic Experiment for Interior Structure of Mars) experiment and for the first time in planetary exploration, Mars’ internal structure and seismicity are constrained. ▪ More than 1,300 seismic events and seismic noise records enable the first comparative seismology studies together with Earth and lunar seismic data. ▪ Inversion of seismic travel times and waveforms provided the first interior model of another terrestrial planet, down to the core. ▪ Several impacts were also seismically recorded with their craters imaged from orbit, providing the first data on impact dynamic on Mars. Abstract:Using body wave arrival times from 31 seismic events recorded on Mars by the InSight mission, combined with topography and gravity field modeling, we constrained lateral variations of crustal thickness through a Bayesian inversion approach. The parameterization of the seismic structure relies on quantities that influence the thermochemical evolution of Mars, enabling the seismic velocities and densities in the different planetary envelopes to be consistently linked through common physical assumptions. Compared to a 1D structure, models with lateral variations of crustal thickness show two possible interpretations of the thermal evolution of Mars, with either a hot or cold scenario at the present‐day. We found the hot scenario to be more compatible with InSight's radiotracking data and the tidal Love number. We relocated the marsquakes and derived maps of seismicity recorded by InSight, which is mostly located along or North of the boundary between the Northern lowlands and the Southern highlands.

Abstract:Mars's seismic activity and noise have been monitored since January 2019 by the seismometer of the InSight (Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport) lander. At night, Mars is extremely quiet; seismic noise is about 500 times lower than Earth's microseismic noise at periods between 4 s and 30 s. The recorded seismic noise increases during the day due to ground deformations induced by convective atmospheric vortices and ground-transferred wind-generated lander noise. Here we constrain properties of the crust beneath InSight, using signals from atmospheric vortices and from the hammering of InSight's Heat Flow and Physical Properties (HP<sup>3</sup>) instrument, as well as the three largest Marsquakes detected as of September 2019. From receiver function analysis, we infer that the uppermost 8–11 km of the crust is highly altered and/or fractured. We measure the crustal diffusivity and intrinsic attenuation using multiscattering analysis and find that seismic attenuation is about three times larger than on the Moon, which suggests that the crust contains small amounts of volatiles.

Abstract:The InSight (Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport) mission landed in Elysium Planitia on Mars on 26 November 2018 and fully deployed its seismometer by the end of February 2019. The mission aims to detect, characterize and locate seismic activity on Mars, and to further constrain the internal structure, composition and dynamics of the planet. Here, we present seismometer data recorded until 30 September 2019, which reveal that Mars is seismically active. We identify 174 marsquakes, comprising two distinct populations: 150 small-magnitude, high-frequency events with waves propagating at crustal depths and 24 low-frequency, subcrustal events of magnitude Mw 3–4 with waves propagating at various depths in the mantle. These marsquakes have spectral characteristics similar to the seismicity observed on the Earth and Moon. We determine that two of the largest detected marsquakes were located near the Cerberus Fossae fracture system. From the recorded seismicity, we constrain attenuation in the crust and mantle, and find indications of a potential low-S-wave-velocity layer in the upper mantle.

Khan et al. , Knapmeyer-Endrun et al. , and Stähler et al. used recently detected marsquakes from the seismometer deployed during the InSight mission to map the interior of Mars (see the Perspective by Cottaar and Koelemeijer). Mars likely has a 24- to 72-kilometer-thick crust with a very deep lithosphere close to 500 kilometers. Similar to the Earth, a low-velocity layer probably exists beneath the lithosphere. The crust of Mars is likely highly enriched in radioactive elements that help to heat this layer at the expense of the interior. The core of Mars is liquid and large, ∼1830 kilometers, which means that the mantle has only one rocky layer rather than two like the Earth has. These results provide a preliminary structure of Mars that helps to constrain the different theories explaining the chemistry and internal dynamics of the planet. Abstract:Abstract For over three Earth years the Marsquake Service has been analyzing the data sent back from the Seismic Experiment for Interior Structure—the seismometer placed on the surface of Mars by NASA’s InSight lander. Although by October 2021, the Mars seismic catalog included 951 events, until recently all these events have been assessed as lying within a radius of 100° of InSight. Here we report two distant events that occurred within days of each other, located on the far side of Mars, giving us our first glimpse into Mars’ core shadow zone. The first event, recorded on 25 August 2021 (InSight sol 976), shows clear polarized arrivals that we interpret to be PP and SS phases at low frequencies and locates to Valles Marineris, 146° ± 7° from InSight. The second event, occurring on 18 September 2021 (sol 1000), has significantly more broadband energy with emergent PP and SS arrivals, and a weak phase arriving before PP that we interpret as Pdiff. Considering uncertain pick times and poorly constrained travel times for Pdiff, we estimate this event is at a distance between 107° and 147° from InSight. With magnitudes of MwMa 4.2 and 4.1, respectively, these are the largest seismic events recorded so far on Mars.

Tectonics of Cerberus Fossae unveiled by marsquakes

Abstract:The InSight mission has measured Mars' seismicity since February 2018 and has allowed to investigate tectonics on another planet. Seismic data shows that most of the widely distributed surface faults are not seismically active, and that seismicity is mostly originating from a single graben structure, the Cerberus Fossae. We show that both major families of marsquakes characterized by low and high frequency content, LF and HF events respectively, are located on central and eastern parts of this graben system. LF hypocenters are located at 15-50 km depth and the spectral character suggests a structurally weak, potentially warm source region consistent with recent volcanic activity at those depths. HF marsquakes occur in the brittle, shallow part of the crust and might originate in fault planes associated with the graben flanks. Estimated magnitudes are between 2.8 and 3.8, resulting in a total seismic moment release within Cerberus Fossae of 1.4-5.6 $\times10^{15}$ Nm/yr, or at least half of the observed value of the entire planet. Our findings confirm that Cerberus Fossae represents a unique tectonic setting shaped by current day volcanic processes, with implications for minimum local heat flow.

Abstract:The seismometer onboard InSight NASA Mars mission discovered a seismically active planet. We focused on the strongest event named S1222a (4 May 2022, Mw ∼ 4.7), which was recorded by the Very Broad Band sensors and associated channel ELYSE and is located 37.2° away from InSight. We use two different methods based on a point source approach for an elastic, horizontally layered medium to retrieve source parameters of S1222a. In the first case, the seismic moment tensor inversion of high‐frequency seismogram data is calculated using a matrix method for the direct waves. The process includes the generation of records in displacement using the frequency‐wavenumber integration technique. A method of inversion of the moment tensor of direct P‐ and S‐waves, less sensitive to path effects than reflected and transformed waves, is presented, which significantly increases the accuracy and reliability of the method. In the second case, tensors were calculated using common low‐frequency full‐waveform inversion and the tests to verify the plausibility of this solution obtained from the single station calculation were performed and the uncertainty estimations for inversions can be useful in future research.

Preliminary data on growth and reproduction of Cobitis simplicispina from Turkey.

Abstract:Preliminary data on growth and reproduction parameters of Cobitis simplicispina from Darýözü Creek in the Kizilimak basin in Kirşehir-Turkey were presented. The age of the specimens collected during a period between March and June 2002, ranged from 1+ to 4+. The observed maximum total length of males is 91.8 mm, and 97 mm for females. The von Bertalanffy equation for male and female specimens was found to be Lt=93.01(1-exp(-0.408(t+0.821))) and Lt=94.42(1-exp(-0.488(t+0.458))), respectively. The length-weight relationship was expressed as log W= 3.009x SL -5.171 when all specimens were taken into account. The range of absolute fecundity extended from 320 to 2141 eggs and the diameter of ripe eggs varied between 1.00 and 1.25 mm. The gonadosomatic index suggested that spawning took place in April.
Martian seismic anisotropy underneath Elysium Planitia revealed by direct S wave splitting

Abstract:Seismic anisotropy, arising from the crystallographic or lattice-preferred orientation of anisotropic minerals or the shape-preferred orientation of melts or cracks, can establish a critical link between Mars's past evolution and its current state. So far, although seismic anisotropy in Mars has been proposed due to different velocities of vertically and horizontally polarized shear waves in the Martian crust, obtained from crustal converted waves, multiples, and surface waves recorded by the InSight seismometer, the evidence is plausible. Notably, the shear wave splitting, which stands out as a straight indicator of seismic anisotropy, has not been reported using marsquake records. In this study, we employ Low-frequency marsquakes detected by the InSight seismometer to reveal shear wave splitting in Mars. We find that the direct S waves of three marsquake recordings (S0173a, S0235b, and S1133c) with high signal-to-noise ratios exhibit the splitting pheonmenon. We rule out the possibility of apparent anisotropy through synthetic tests, affirming the presence of seismic anisotropy in Mars. The delay time (about 1.33 s on average) measured from the direct S wave splitting is too large to be solely attributed to the seismic anisotropy in the upper crust (0 - 10 km) beneath the InSight. Thus, seismic anisotropy in the deeper region of Mars is indispensable. Combined with other geophysical evidence near the InSight landing site, the strong seismic anisotropy observed in this study implies the porous crust with aligned cracks being greater than 10 km beneath the InSight and/or the presence of an active mantle plume underneath the Elysium Planitia of Mars.

Numerical Modeling of Global Seismic Wave Propagation in the Whole Mars Models and Effect of Lateral Crustal Variation

Abstract:Investigating the interior structure of Mars is important to study not only its past and present state and future evolution, but also the formation and evolution of the Earth and solar system. Seismological methods played import roles in the study of the Earth and Moon’s interior. The first mission about Martian seismology began in 1976, but no seismic events were convincingly detected during the observation. The InSight Spacecraft landed on Mars on November 26, 2018 in Elysium Planitia and installed the first seismometer on Mars. It will provide the in situ observation of interior structure and seismic activity of Mars for the first time. In this study, we perform numerical modelling of seismic wave propagation in whole-mars models by solving the seismic wave equations using a hybrid pseudospectral and finite difference method on staggered grid. Firstly, based on the Martian internal models derived from geochemical analysis (Sohl and Spohn, 1997), we present numerical simulations of seismic wave propagation in the whole Mars models. The generation and propagation of various seismic phases in the whole Mars models are shown by synthetic seismograms and wavefield snapshots. We analyze the effects of crustal thickness and depth of core mantle boundary on seismic wave propagation. Then based on the present model of Martian crustal thickness (Wieczorek and Zuber, 2004), we simulate seismic wave propagation in laterally heterogeneous Martian crust and analyze the influence of lateral heterogeneity on global seismic wave propagation. Multiple reflections and conversions of seismic waves and their constructive interference occurred inside the low-velocity Martian crust form reverberating wave trains. Thickness of Martian crust has strong effect on the propagation of multiple surface reflections and surface waves. Seismic reflections from core-mantle boundary can be clearly identified from the calculated transverse component seismogram.

Abstract:Knowledge of the interior structure and atmosphere of Mars is essential to understanding how the planet has formed and evolved. A major obstacle to investigations of planetary interiors, however, is that they are not directly accessible. Most of the geophysical data provide global information that cannot be separated into contributions from the core, the mantle and the crust. The NASA InSight mission changed this situation by providing high-quality seismic and lander radio science data 1,2 . Here we use the InSight's radio science data to determine fundamental properties of the core, mantle and atmosphere of Mars. By precisely measuring the rotation of the planet, we detected a resonance with a normal mode that allowed us to characterize the core and mantle separately. For an entirely solid mantle, we found that the liquid core has a radius of 1,835 ± 55 km and a mean density of 5,955–6,290 kg m −3 , and that the increase in density at the core–mantle boundary is 1,690–2,110 kg m −3 . Our analysis of InSight's radio tracking data argues against the existence of a solid inner core and reveals the shape of the core, indicating that there are internal mass anomalies deep within the mantle. We also find evidence of a slow acceleration in the Martian rotation rate, which could be the result of a long-term trend either in the internal dynamics of Mars or in its atmosphere and ice caps.

Abstract:The InSight mission is a great milestone in the history of Mars' seismic exploration after the Viking 2 lander. We first review the scientific goals of the InSight mission and its seismic observation experiment on Mars' surface. We then present the discoveries in the InSight seismic data. Both the pressure-induced ground deformation and the HP3 self-hammering signals were detected by the InSight seismic instrument. These data are further used to constrain the physical properties of the surface regolith and the inversion of the underground structure at the InSight landing site. Besides, the structural resonance around 2.4 Hz allows us to distinguish the natural response from the mechanical vibration such as the lander mode. Non-seismic noise like the glitches and donks were also found in Mars' seismic data, and their characteristics and possible origins will be summarized. The InSight mission has successfully explored the structure of Mars' crust, while the exploration of Mars' deep interior is still limited because there lacks large-magnitude Marsquakes and meteorite impact events.

Abstract:Recent estimates of the crustal thickness of Mars show a bimodal result of either ∼20 or ∼40 km beneath the InSight lander. We propose an approach based on random matrix theory applied to receiver functions (RFs) to further constrain the subsurface structure. Assuming a spiked covariance model for our data, we first use the phase transition properties of the singular value spectrum of random matrices to detect coherent arrivals in the waveforms. Examples from terrestrial data show how the method works in different scenarios. We identify three previously undetected converted arrivals in the InSight data, including the first multiple from a deeper third interface. We then use this information to jointly invert RFs with the absolute S‐wave velocity information in the polarization of body waves. Results show a crustal thickness of 43 ± 5 km beneath the lander with two mid‐crustal interfaces at depths of 8 ± 1 and 21 ± 3 km.

Abstract:NASA's InSight (Interior exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport) mission landed in Elysium Planitia on Mars on 26 November 2018. It aims to determine the interior structure, composition and thermal state of Mars, as well as constrain present-day seismicity and impact cratering rates. Such information is key to understanding the differentiation and subsequent thermal evolution of Mars, and thus the forces that shape the planet's surface geology and volatile processes. Here we report an overview of the first ten months of geophysical observations by InSight. As of 30 September 2019, 174 seismic events have been recorded by the lander's seismometer, including over 20 events of moment magnitude Mw = 3–4. The detections thus far are consistent with tectonic origins, with no impact-induced seismicity yet observed, and indicate a seismically active planet. An assessment of these detections suggests that the frequency of global seismic events below approximately Mw = 3 is similar to that of terrestrial intraplate seismic activity, but there are fewer larger quakes; no quakes exceeding Mw = 4 have been observed. The lander's other instruments—two cameras, atmospheric pressure, temperature and wind sensors, a magnetometer and a radiometer—have yielded much more than the intended supporting data for seismometer noise characterization: magnetic field measurements indicate a local magnetic field that is ten-times stronger than orbital estimates and meteorological measurements reveal a more dynamic atmosphere than expected, hosting baroclinic and gravity waves and convective vortices. With the mission due to last for an entire Martian year or longer, these results will be built on by further measurements by the InSight lander.

Abstract:We detected surface waves from two meteorite impacts on Mars. By measuring group velocity dispersion along the impact-lander path, we obtained a direct constraint on crustal structure away from the InSight lander. The crust north of the equatorial dichotomy had a shear wave velocity of approximately 3.2 kilometers per second in the 5- to 30-kilometer depth range, with little depth variation. This implies a higher crustal density than inferred beneath the lander, suggesting either compositional differences or reduced porosity in the volcanic areas traversed by the surface waves. The lower velocities and the crustal layering observed beneath the landing site down to a 10-kilometer depth are not a global feature. Structural variations revealed by surface waves hold implications for models of the formation and thickness of the martian crust.

A thermal origin for super-high-frequency marsquakes

Abstract:Of the marsquakes detected, super-high-frequency marsquakes are dominant (>60%) in number. However, their occurrence mechanism remains unclear. One possibility is local heat-induced ground motion. We model heat conduction under InSight based on measured subsurface thermal parameters and air temperature records, which provide insights into heat flow in the shallow Martian subsurface. Diurnal and seasonal variations of subsurface temperature and their rates of temperature change are analyzed. Diurnal temperature variations >1 K only occur within 25 cm of the surface. The highest rate of temperature change appears around sol 440 (in summer), which coincides closely with the season of the dominant number of super-high-frequency marsquakes observed. Thermal-mechanical finite-element simulations indicate that heat-induced ground motion is evidently stronger in the daytime than at night. These results indicate that super-high-frequency marsquakes are most likely induced by thermal stress in shallow rocks on the surface or partially buried within 10 cm depth.

Abstract:A joint optimization method considering both Partial-Spectrum-Reuse (PSR) scheme and base-station-sleep (BSS) is proposed for improving the energy efficiency in heterogeneous networks (HetNets). We derive the coverage probabilities for both the macro-tier and micro-tier networks, followed by maximizing the HetNet's coverage probability through optimizing both the PSR factor and macro-micro base station's active probability ratio (APR). Furthermore, the problem of energy-consumption-minimization in the whole HetNet can be addressed by analyzing the relationship between the optimal PSR factor and APR. Numerical results show that the proposed joint optimization method is capable of saving network energy consumption of up to 50% when the signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio (SINR) target is set to be 20 dB.

Abstract:<p>For Earth and Moon, the seismic observation data is the most direct and effective means to detect their internal structure. However, due to the long distance between Mars and Earth and the harsh observation conditions on Mars, the exploration of Martian velocity structure model is a very challenging task. The InSight lander deployed the first seismic observation instrument SEIS (Seismic Experiment for Internal Structure) on the Mars&#8217; surface after its successful landing on Mars on November 26, 2018. In this study, we performed horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio (HVSR) and polarization analysis of three component VBB seismic waveforms recorded by the SEIS station released on the IRIS website. We are trying to constrain the thickness of the Martian regolith at the landing site of InSight from the SEIS data. The VBB ambient noise data we used are in HHV/HHU/HHW channels of ELYSE station in 30 Martian days. These data are predominantly ambient noise data caused by wind effects and do not contain any known marsquake data. We found that the HVSR curves from nearly all released data show two distinct peaks at 11.9 Hz and 24.5 Hz, respectively. Furthermore, we conducted particle motion and polarization analysis on these data in various frequency bands, which indicate that the ground motion at the highest peak show linearly polarized and vertically incident motion with a fixed azimuth. This could be explained by the S-wave resonance of the Martian regolith at the InSight landing site caused by the wave motion source from the wind induced motion of the lander. Using the possible S-wave velocity of the Martian regolith proposed by previous studies and the peak frequencies of the HVSR results in this study, thickness of the Martian regolith at the InSight landing site was obtained that is smaller than the pre-evaluated thickness (3~5 m) for the InSight mission.</p>
