Abstract:Cerebrospinal fluid leakage causing a pseudomeningocele is a well-recognized complication after spine surgery. The repair of pseudomeningocele in a symptomatic patient is usually accomplished with direct open surgical repair of the durotomy, prolonged lumbar drainage, and/or placement of an epidural blood patch. The authors highlight a unique method of pseudomeningocele repair by presenting 2 cases of adolescent girls with symptomatic lumbar pseudomeningoceles. In both cases ultrasound was used to guide the aspiration of CSF from each pseudomeningocele and to apply the epidural blood patch. Both patients had complete and immediate resolution of symptoms. The authors found ultrasound to be a useful tool to assess the extent of the CSF leakage, to determine the degree of aspiration of the extradural CSF, and to confirm the injection of the blood into the epidural space and the space created by the pseudomeningocele.
Synchronization on fractional multiplex higher-order networks

Abstract:This paper explores the synchronization problem in fractional multiplex higher-order networks. Initially, a fractional multiplex higher-order network model is established, which seamlessly integrates multiplex structures with higher-order interactions. Subsequently, by leveraging a well-crafted Lyapunov function, the Lyapunov direct method, and fractional inequalities, it is demonstrated that the fractional multiplex higher-order network can achieve intra-layer synchronization, inter-layer synchronization, and complete synchronization. Finally, the theoretical findings are validated through two numerical examples featuring a simplicial complex or hypergraph structures within the intra-layer network.
Higher-order interactions shape collective dynamics differently in hypergraphs and simplicial complexes

Abstract:Higher-order networks have emerged as a powerful framework to model complex systems and their collective behavior. Going beyond pairwise interactions, they encode structured relations among arbitrary numbers of units through representations such as simplicial complexes and hypergraphs. So far, the choice between simplicial complexes and hypergraphs has often been motivated by technical convenience. Here, using synchronization as an example, we demonstrate that the effects of higher-order interactions are highly representation-dependent. In particular, higher-order interactions typically enhance synchronization in hypergraphs but have the opposite effect in simplicial complexes. We provide theoretical insight by linking the synchronizability of different hypergraph structures to (generalized) degree heterogeneity and cross-order degree correlation, which in turn influence a wide range of dynamical processes from contagion to diffusion. Our findings reveal the hidden impact of higher-order representations on collective dynamics, highlighting the importance of choosing appropriate representations when studying systems with nonpairwise interactions.

Abstract:Recently, many scholars have discovered that fractional calculus possess infinite memory and can better reflect the memory characteristics of neurons. Therefore, this paper studies the Hopf bifurcation of a fractional‐order network with short‐cut connections structure and self‐delay feedback. Firstly, we use the Laplace transform to obtain the characteristic equation of the model, which is the transcendental equation containing four times transcendental item. Secondly, by selecting the communication delay as the bifurcation parameter and the other delay as the constant in its stability interval, the conditions for the occurrence of Hopf bifurcation are established; the bifurcation diagrams are provided to ensure that the derived bifurcation findings are accurate. Thirdly, in the case of identical neurons, the crossing curves method is exploited to the fractional‐order functional function equation to extract the Hopf bifurcation curve. Finally, two numerical examples are employed to confirm the efficiency of the developed theoretical outcomes.

Abstract:The study delves into higher-order networks, extending beyond pairwise connections, using modulated laser models, and employing simplicial complexes to model non-pairwise interactions. Two coupling scenarios, linear and nonlinear diffusive functions, are explored. Our results demonstrate that the linear diffusive coupling leads to synchronization, further enhanced with multi-node interactions, and a tendency for forming synchronous clusters before complete synchrony. In contrast, nonlinear diffusive coupling results in a cluster synchronization state with oscillation death and periodic solutions, along with observed chimera and solitary states. In this scenario, the network fails to achieve complete synchrony. Regardless of the coupling function, the network exhibits different solutions within each synchronization pattern, showcasing the potential for multistability—the coexistence of stable solutions across various collective dynamics.

Abstract:Fractals, Ahead of Print. The Master Stability Function (MSF) is a crucial tool for understanding the synchronization behavior of coupled nonlinear oscillators. In recent years, the field of fractional calculus and its applications in nonlinear dynamics gained significant attention, leading to an expanded focus on the network dynamics of such systems. This study aims to explore this emerging area by deriving the MSF for coupled fractional-order nonlinear oscillators and investigating their relationship with coupling strength and fractional order. To provide a comprehensive comparison, we utilize the well-known nonlinear oscillators to study the differences and similarities between integer-order and fractional-order MSFs. Our analysis reveals that, similar to integer-order systems, fractional-order coupled nonlinear oscillators exhibit MSFs that can be characterized by the presence of negative values within a finite interval of the normalized coupling parameter. This negative region is crucial as it indicates stable synchronization. Furthermore, we categorize the fractional-order MSFs using the same classifications applied to integer-order MSFs. This classification helps in systematically understanding and comparing the synchronization properties of both types of systems. Our findings are supported by extensive numerical simulations, which demonstrate that the majority of fractional-order coupled oscillators exhibit higher classes of MSF. This higher classification suggests that fractional-order systems have a superior ability to achieve synchronization compared to their integer-order counterparts. In summary, this study underscores the significance of fractional calculus in enhancing our understanding of synchronization in complex systems. The derived MSF for fractional-order nonlinear oscillators provides valuable insights into their dynamic behavior and opens new avenues for research in various scientific and engineering disciplines.

Abstract:Abstract Networks in nature have complex interactions among agents. One significant phenomenon induced by interactions is synchronization of coupled agents, and the interactive network topology can be tuned to optimize synchronization. Previous studies showed that the optimized conventional network with pairwise interactions favors a homogeneous degree distribution of nodes for undirected interactions, and is always structurally asymmetric for directed interactions. However, the optimal control on synchronization for prevailing higher-order interactions is less explored. Here, by considering the higher-order interactions in a hypergraph and the Kuramoto model with 2-hyperlink interactions, we find that the network topology with optimized synchronizability may have distinct properties. For undirected interactions, optimized networks with 2-hyperlink interactions by simulated annealing tend to become homogeneous in the nodes’ generalized degree. We further rigorously demonstrate that for directed interactions, the structural symmetry can be preserved in the optimally synchronizable network with 2-hyperlink interactions. The results suggest that controlling the network topology of higher-order interactions leads to synchronization phenomena beyond pairwise interactions.

Perfect synchronization in complex networks with higher order interactions

Abstract:We propose a framework for achieving perfect synchronization in complex networks of Sakaguchi-Kuramoto oscillators in presence of higher order interactions (simplicial complexes) at a targeted point in the parameter space. It is achieved by using an analytically derived frequency set from the governing equations. The frequency set not only provides stable perfect synchronization in the network at a desired point, but also proves to be very effective in achieving high level of synchronization around it compared to the choice of any other frequency sets (Uniform, Normal etc.). The proposed framework has been verified using scale-free, random and small world networks. In all the cases, stable perfect synchronization is achieved at a targeted point for wide ranges of the coupling parameters and phase-frustration. Both first and second order transitions to synchronizations are observed in the system depending on the type of the network and phase frustration. The stability of perfect synchronization state is checked using the low dimensional reduction approach. The robustness of the perfect synchronization state obtained in the system using the derived frequency set is checked by introducing a Gaussian noise around it.

However, very few papers have been published regarding the chaotic behaviors of fractional discrete-time neural networks and their synchronization properties. A novel chaotic <em class="a-plus-plus">h</em>-fractional discrete neural network model is presented in this paper. Hypernetworks: cluster synchronisation is a higher-order effect

Abstract:Many networked systems are governed by non-pairwise interactions between nodes. The resulting higher-order interaction structure can then be encoded by means of a hypernetwork. In this paper we consider dynamical systems on hypernetworks by defining a class of admissible maps for every such hypernetwork. We explain how to classify robust cluster synchronisation patterns on hypernetworks by finding balanced partitions, and we generalize the concept of a graph fibration to the hypernetwork context. We also show that robust synchronisation patterns are only fully determined by polynomial admissible maps of high order. This means that, unlike in dyadic networks, cluster synchronisation on hypernetworks is a higher-order, i.e., nonlinear effect. We give a formula, in terms of the order of the hypernetwork, for the degree of the polynomial admissible maps that determine robust synchronisation patterns. We also demonstrate that this degree is optimal by investigating a class of examples. We conclude by displaying how this effect may cause remarkable synchrony breaking bifurcations that occur at high polynomial degree.

Abstract:In this article, the exponential stability problem for fractional-order complex multi-links networks with aperiodically intermittent control is considered. Using the graph theory and Lyapunov method, two theorems, including a Lyapunov-type theorem and a coefficient-type theorem, are given to ensure the exponential stability of the underlying networks. The theoretical results show that the exponential convergence rate is dependent on the control gain and the order of fractional derivative. To be specific, the larger control gain, the higher the exponential convergence rate. Meanwhile, when aperiodically intermittent control degenerates into periodically intermittent control, a corollary is also provided to ensure the exponential stability of the underlying networks. Furthermore, to show the practicality of theoretical results, as an application, the exponential stability of fractional-order multi-links competitive neural networks with aperiodically intermittent control is investigated and a stability criterion is established. Finally, the effectiveness and feasibility of the theoretical results are demonstrated through a numerical example.

Higher-Order Network Interactions through Phase Reduction for Oscillators with Phase-Dependent Amplitude

Abstract:Coupled oscillator networks provide mathematical models for interacting periodic processes. If the coupling is weak, phase reduction -- the reduction of the dynamics onto an invariant torus -- captures the emergence of collective dynamical phenomena, such as synchronization. While a first-order approximation of the dynamics on the torus may be appropriate in some situations, higher-order phase reductions become necessary, for example, when the coupling strength increases. However, these are generally hard to compute and thus they have only been derived in special cases: This includes globally coupled Stuart--Landau oscillators, where the limit cycle of the uncoupled nonlinear oscillator is circular as the amplitude is independent of the phase. We go beyond this restriction and derive second-order phase reductions for coupled oscillators for arbitrary networks of coupled nonlinear oscillators with phase-dependent amplitude, a scenario more reminiscent of real-world oscillations. We analyze how the deformation of the limit cycle affects the stability of important dynamical states, such as full synchrony and splay states. By identifying higher-order phase interaction terms with hyperedges of a hypergraph, we obtain natural classes of coupled phase oscillator dynamics on hypergraphs that adequately capture the dynamics of coupled limit cycle oscillators.

Impact of phase lag on synchronization in frustrated Kuramoto model with higher-order interactions

Abstract:The study of first order transition (explosive synchronization) in an ensemble (network) of coupled oscillators has been the topic of paramount interest among the researchers for more than onedecade. Several frameworks have been proposed to induce explosive synchronization in a network and it has been reported that phase frustration in a network usually suppresses first order transition in the presence of pairwise interactions among the oscillators. However, on the contrary, by considering networks of phase frustrated coupled oscillators in the presence of higher order interactions (upto 2-simplexes) we show here under certain conditions, phase frustration can promote explosive synchronization in a network. A reduced order model of the network in the thermodynamic limit is derived using the Ott-Antonsen ansatz to explain this surprising result. Analytical treatment of the reduced order model including bifurcation analysis explains the apparent counter intuitive result quite clearly.

Effect of hidden geometry and higher-order interactions on the synchronization and hysteresis behaviour of phase oscillators on 5-cliques simplicial assemblies

Abstract:The hidden geometry of simplicial complexes can influence the collective dynamics of nodes in different ways depending on the simplex-based interactions of various orders and competition between local and global structural features. We study a system of phase oscillators attached to nodes of 4-dimensional simplicial complexes and interacting via positive/negative edges-based pairwise $K_1$ and triangle-based triple $K_2\geq 0$ couplings. Three prototypal simplicial complexes are grown by aggregation of 5-cliques, controlled by the chemical affinity parameter $\nu$, resulting in sparse, mixed, and compact architecture, all of which have 1-hyperbolic graphs but different spectral dimensions. By changing the interaction strength $K_1\in[-4,2]$ along the forward and backward sweeps, we numerically determine individual phases of each oscillator and a global order parameter to measure the level of synchronisation. Our results reveal how different architectures of simplicial complexes, in conjunction with the interactions and internal-frequency distributions, impact the shape of the hysteresis loop and lead to patterns of locally synchronised groups that hinder global network synchronisation.

Abstract:A key challenge of nonlinear dynamics and network science is to understand how higher-order interactions influence collective dynamics. Although many studies have approached this question through linear stability analysis, less is known about how higher-order interactions shape the global organization of different states. Here, we shed light on this issue by analyzing the rich patterns supported by identical Kuramoto oscillators on hypergraphs. We show that higher-order interactions can have opposite effects on linear stability and basin stability: they stabilize twisted states (including full synchrony) by improving their linear stability, but also make them hard to find by dramatically reducing their basin size. Our results highlight the importance of understanding higher-order interactions from both local and global perspectives.

Abstract:In this article, a new nonlinear four-dimensional hyperchaotic model is presented. The dynamical aspects of the complex system are analyzed covering equilibrium points, linear stability, dissipation, bifurcations, Lyapunov exponent, phase portraits, Poincaré mapping, attractor projection, sensitivity and time series analysis. To analyze hidden attractors, the proposed system is investigated through nonlocal operator in Caputo sense. The existence of solution of the system in fractional sense is studied by fixed point theory. The stability of fractional order system is demonstrated via Matignon stability criteria. The fractional order system is numerically studied via newly developed numerical method which is based on Newton polynomial interpolation. The evolution of the attractors are depicted with different fractional orders. For few fractional orders, some hidden strange chaotic attractors are observed through graphs. Theoretical and numerical studies demonstrate that this model has complex dynamics with some stimulating physical characteristics. To verify and validate the results, we implement Field Programmable Analog Arrays (FPAA).

Abstract:Research in the field of dynamic behaviors in neural networks with variable-order differences is currently a thriving area, marked by various significant discoveries. However, when it comes to discrete-time neural networks featuring fractional variable-order nonlocal and nonsingular kernels, there has been limited exploration. This paper stands as one of the initial contributions to this subject, focusing primarily on the topics of stability and synchronization in finite-time within discrete neural networks. The research employs the nabla ABC variable-order difference operator, with a primary approach involving the investigation of a novel Gronwall inequality using the Atangana-Baleanu difference variable-order sum operator. This analysis leads to the development of a uniqueness theorem and a criterion for the stability in finite-time of variable-order discrete neural networks. Furthermore, the requirements stemming from this type of stability and the novel Gronwall inequality serve as the foundation for establishing the conditions necessary for achieving finite-time synchronization in these networks, employing a specific control using state feedback method. Finally, the study utilizes numerical solutions to validate the obtained results.

Abstract:Networks incorporating higher-order interactions are increasingly recognized for their ability to introduce novel dynamics into various processes, including synchronization. Previous studies on synchronization within multilayer networks have often been limited to specific models, such as the Kuramoto model, or have focused solely on higher-order interactions within individual layers. Here, we present a comprehensive framework for investigating synchronization, particularly global synchronization, in multilayer networks with higher-order interactions. Our framework considers interactions beyond pairwise connections, both within and across layers. We demonstrate the existence of a stable global synchronous state, with a condition resembling the master stability function, contingent on the choice of coupling functions. Our theoretical findings are supported by simulations using Hindmarsh-Rose neuronal and Rössler oscillators. These simulations illustrate how synchronization is facilitated by higher-order interactions, both within and across layers, highlighting the advantages over scenarios involving interactions within single layers.

Abstract:The synchronization of higher-order networks presents a fascinating area of exploration within nonlinear dynamics and complex networks. Simultaneously, growing research interest focuses on uncovering synchronization dynamics in time-varying networks with time-dependent coupling structures, reflecting their prevalence in real-world systems like neuronal networks. Motivated by this, the present study delves into the synchronization phenomenon within a higher-order network incorporating a blinking coupling scheme. Blinking coupling is an on–off switching coupling that has been demonstrated to enhance synchronization effectively. Its efficacy stems from ensuring synchronization, as the master stability function (MSF) follows a linear pattern. In this study, our objective is to investigate such a time-varying coupling scheme in a higher-order network configuration. We investigate the influence of coupling parameters and blinking frequency on synchronization behavior. Notably, our findings demonstrate that as the blinking frequency increases, the network exhibits a gradual convergence toward the behavior of the average network. Furthermore, leveraging the analytical framework of MSF and the average synchronization error, we provide analytical and numerical evidence confirming that the MSF pattern within the average network transforms into a linear function. The synchronous and asynchronous regions also exhibit a clear separation demarcated by a linear curve across the coupling parameter space. Moreover, our results suggest that incorporating higher-order interactions fosters enhanced synchrony by effectively scaling the synchronization patterns to lower coupling parameter values.

We establish the ability of a fractional-order excitable neuron model with Caputo's fractional derivative to analyze the effects of its dynamics on the spike train features observed in our results. The significance of this generalization relies on a theoretical framework of the model in which memory and hereditary properties are considered. Employing the fractional exponent, we first provide information about the variations in electrical activities. We deal with the 2D class I and class II excitable Morris-Lecar (M-L) neuron models that show the alternation of spiking and bursting features including MMOs & MMBOs of an uncoupled fractional-order neuron. We then extend the study with the 3D slow-fast M-L model in the fractional domain. The considered approach establishes a way to describe various characteristics similarities between fractional-order and classical integer-order dynamics. Using the stability and bifurcation analysis, we discuss different parameter spaces where the quiescent state emerges in uncoupled neurons. We show the characteristics consistent with the analytical results. Next, the Erdös-Rényi network of desynchronized mixed neurons (oscillatory and excitable) is constructed that is coupled through membrane voltage. It can generate complex firing activities where quiescent neurons start to fire. Furthermore, we have shown that increasing coupling can create cluster synchronization, and eventually it can enable the network to fire in unison. Based on cluster synchronization, we develop a reduced-order model which can capture the activities of the entire network. Our results reveal that the effect of fractional-order depends on the synaptic connectivity and the memory trace of the system. Additionally, the dynamics captures spike frequency adaptation and spike latency that occur over multiple timescales as the effects of fractional derivative, which has been observed in neural computation.
