Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is an essential process during electrochemical water -splitting. Due to its sluggish kinetics, low cost and highly efficient catalyst is invariably desired to decrease its overpotential for large-scale application. However, the overpotential of most advanced OER electrocatalysts is still more than 200 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm-2. In this work, we constructed active layered NiFe double hydroxides with cation defects on self-supported three-dimensional (3D) CoNi nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube composite substrate as integrated OER catalyst. Strikingly, electrochemical measurements showed that the optimized sample exhibited outstanding OER activity with low overpotentials of 178 and 268 mV at the current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm-2 in alkaline environment, alongside a good durability. The excellent OER performance was ascribed to the strongly synergistic effect of intrinsically active NiFe double hydroxide layers with abundant cation vacancies and 3D carbon nanotube composite substrate with good conductivity and various functional moieties, thus facilitating the electrocatalytic kinetic.(c) 2022 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. Abstract:The sluggish anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is currently the major hinderance for hydrogen production from water splitting. Iron-based materials are promising cost-effective candidates for OER electrocatalysts, however their low intrinsic activity limits their performance. Here we report a defect-engineered Fe2O3-CeO(2 )heterojunction with rich oxygen vacancies (Fe2O3@CeO2-OV), exhibiting ultralow overpotential of 172 mV at 10 mA cm(-2) and 317 mV at 1000 mA cm(-2), respectively, alongside superior stability and durability. Advanced characterization and density functional theory calculations demonstrate that defect engineering combined with heterojunction formation activates the lattice oxygen, switching the reaction pathway from the conventional adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM) to the lattice oxygen mechanism (LOM). The oxygen vacancies are revealed to form preferably on CeO2 and induce not only electronic but also geometric modulation, contributing to strong Fe2O3-CeO2 interfacial interaction and charge transfer from CeO2 to Fe2O3, facilitating the O-2 desorption and boosting the intrinsic activity.

Abstract:Exploring efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is an urgent need to advance the development of sustainable energy conversion. Though defect engineering is considered an effective strategy to regulate catalyst activity for enhanced OER performance, the controllable synthesis of defective oxides electrocatalysts remains challenging. Here, oxygen defects are introduced into NiCo2O4 nanorods by an electrochemical lithiation strategy. By tuning in situ lithiation potentials, the concentration of oxygen defects and the corresponding catalytic activity can be feasibly regulated. In addition, the relationship between the changes in the defect density and electronic structure and the lithiation cut-off voltages is revealed. The results show that NiCo2O4 nanorods undertook intercalation and two-step conversion reaction, in which the lithiation-induced conversion reaction gives rise to a CoO@NiO-based structure with higher defect density and lower oxidation states. As a result, the defective CoO@NiO-based catalyst exhibits exceptional OER activity with an overpotential of 270 mV at 10 mA cm(-2), which is about 74 mV below the pristine nanomaterials. This research proposes a novel strategy to explore high-performance catalysts with structural stability and defect control.
In Situ Synthesis of NiO/CuO Nanosheet Heterostructures Rich in Defects for Efficient Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:Developing efficient electrocatalysts toward oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of great significance for improving the efficiency of hydrogen production by electrolysis of water. The transition metal-based heterostructure shows superior catalytic performance toward OER due to abundant defects and a modified electronic structure of the active sites. Herein, we synthesized a NiO and CuO heterostructured nanosheet rich in defects on the Ni foam via an in situ electrochemical oxidation. The electrocatalyst showed high OER activity with an overpotential of 234 mV at 10 mA cm(-2) and a small Tafel slope of 22 mV dec(-1). To our knowledge, this is the first time that the NiO and CuO heterostructure, which was obtained by a very simple preparation method, has been used in OER. The excellent catalytic performance can be attributed to electron interactions between NiO and CuO, thus modifying the adsorption energy of nickel oxide to intermediate species. Moreover, we found that the heterostructured nanosheet was composed of many very small NiO and CuO nanocrystals with abundant defects and more exposed active sites, thus improving the catalytic activity and accelerating the kinetic processes of OER.

Abstract:To develop highly efficient and low-cost electrocatalysts based on earth-abundant elements for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a great challenge for electrocatalytic water splitting. Herein, a unique type of NiFe-based oxide catalyst with abundant defects is successfully synthesized via pulsed laser ablation in a specific atmosphere containing reductive NH3. The catalyst is self-supported and assembled from ultrafine nanoparticles with size of less than 5 nm. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses suggest that the reductive NH3 results in a large number of oxygen and nickel vacancies and lower crystallinity. Consequently, the catalyst exhibits a high-performance OER activity with a low overpotential of 223 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and a small Tafel slope of 35.0 mV dec−1, surpassing most NiFe-based OER electrocatalysts.
Multiple structural defects in ultrathin NiFe-LDH nanosheets synergistically and remarkably boost water oxidation reaction

Abstract:Modifying electrocatalysts nanostructures and tuning their electronic properties through defects-oriented synthetic strategies are essential to improve the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance of electrocatalysts. Current synthetic strategies about electrocatalysts mainly target the single or double structural defects, while the researches about the synergistic effect of multiple structural defects are rare. In this work, the ultrathin NiFe layered double hydroxide nanosheets with a holey structure, oxygen vacancies and Ni3+ defects on nickel foam (NiFe-LDH-NSs/NF) are prepared by employing a simple and green H2O2-assisted etching method. The synergistic effect of the above three defects leads to the exposure of more active sites and significant improvement of the intrinsic activity. The optimized catalyst exhibits an excellent OER performance with an extraordinarily low overpotential of 170 mV at 10 mA·cm−2 and a small Tafel slope of 39.3 mV·dec−1 in 1 M KOH solution. Density functional theory calculations reveal this OER performance arises from pseudo re-oxidized metal-stable Ni3+ near oxygen vacancies (Ovac), which suppresses 3d-eg of Ni-site and elevates d-band center towards the competitively low electron-transfer barrier. This work provides a new insight to fabricate advanced electrocatalysts for renewable energy conversion technologies.

Abstract:Nickel/iron layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) represents a promising electrocatalyst for the challenging oxygen evolution reaction (OER), yet the precise role of iron (Fe) in enhancing its activity remains unclear. Herein, we conduct a comprehensive investigation aimed at unraveling the influence of Fe incorporation on the atomic environments and electronic structure of NiFe-LDH, with the ultimate goal of establishing a correlation between these factors and elucidating the mechanisms by which Fe amplifies the OER performance. Our findings reveal that Fe dopants induce weakening of the nickel (Ni)-oxygen (O) coordination, and then generate abundant oxygen vacancies (OV), which can mediate the electron transfer from Fe to Ni and finally result in electron localization at the Ni centers. The electron localization around Ni leads to the creation of a new energy level near the Fermi level and the formation of an electron-rich structure, resulting in a favorable electronic conductivity and reaction kinetics. The optimal NiFe-LDH sample exhibits an extraordinary electrocatalytic performance, requiring ultra-low overpotentials of only 189 and 248 mV to achieve current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm-2, respectively, in a 1.0 M KOH electrolyte. The comprehensive understanding obtained from this study can guide future design of high-performance NiFe-LDH-based electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Currently, engineering non-precious NiFe layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) electrocatalysts with excellent oxygen evolution performances at high current densities is highly critical to promoting electrolytic water splitting producing hydrogen for large-scale commercial applications. Herein, an intrigued oxygen vacancy-rich Fe(Ⅱ)-incorporated NiFe-LDH containing electroactive high-valence ferritic species is successfully grown on Ni foam (Fe2+-NiFe-LDH-EO6 ) through an elaborate two-step route including hydrothermal and electrooxidation, and utilized as a high-efficiency elctrocayalyst of alkaline water oxidation possessing abundant exposed active sites, excellent intrinsic catalytic activity and superior durability. Therefore, the Fe2+-NiFe-LDH-EO6 electrocatalyst towards oxygen evolution reaction (OER) enables the low overpotentials of 239, 285 and 350 mV for the current densities of 10, 100 and 500 mA cm-2, respectively, a small Tafel slope of 48.3 mV dec-1, the low onset potential of 1.451 V, and retains the catalytic activity for 40 h at the large current density of 500 mA cm-2 as well as owns the high turnover frequency (TOF) value of 0.93 s-1 at the overpotential of 300 mV. This work provides a promising avenue to improve the OER performances of NiFe-LDH electrocatalyst for practical applications.

Abstract:Transition metal Fe-dominated materials generally show inefficient electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER), while Fe-incorporated multimetallic compounds can exhibit high catalytic activity. In fact, there is always a controversy about the main active sites in Fe-involved OER elelctrocatalysts. Herein, we demonstrate a highly active mono-Fe-based OER electrocatalyst with a very low overpotential of 283 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) and a Tafel slope of 41.4 mV dec(-1). Systematic characterization reveals that the OER performance stems from Na dissolution during the electrocatalytic oxidation process, enabling the electrocatalyst reconstruction to form highly defective oxyhydroxides as highly active catalytic sites. Notably, the electrocatalytic activity can be significantly promoted through the introduction of a heterotransition metal. This work provides insights for active sites in OER catalysis, along with a facile route to tune the intrinsic activity.

Abstract:Iron-based (oxy)hydroxides are especially attractive electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) owing to their earth abundance, low cost, and nontoxicity. However, poor OER kinetics on the surface restricts the performance of the FeOOH electrocatalyst. Herein, a highly efficient and stable Ni(OH)(2)/beta-like FeOOH electrocatalyst is obtained by facile electroactivation treatment. The activated Ni(OH)(2)/beta-like FeOOH sample indicates an overpotential of 300 mV at 10 mAcm(-2) for the OER, and no clear current decay after 50 h of testing; this is comparable to the most efficient nickel- and cobalt-based electrocatalysts on planar substrates. Furthermore, studies suggest that beta-like FeOOH plays a key role in remarkably enhancing the performance during the electroactivation process owing to its metastable tunnel structure with a lower barrier for interface diffusion of Ni2+ ions between the bilayer electrocatalyst. This study develops a new strategy to explore efficient and low-cost electrocatalysts and deepens understanding of bilayer electrocatalysts for the OER.

Abstract:Rational modulation of surface reconstruction in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) utilizing defect engineering to form efficient catalytic activity centers is a topical interest in the field of catalysis. The introduction of point defects has been demonstrated to be an effective strategy to regulate the electronic configuration of electrocatalysts, but the influence of more complex planar defects (e.g., twins and stacking faults), on their intrinsic activity is still not fully understood. This study harnesses ultrasonic cavitation for rapid and controlled introduction of different types of defects in FeCoNi/FeAl2O4 hybrid coatings, optimizing OER catalytic activity. Theoretical calculations and experiments demonstrate that the different defects optimize the coordination environment and facilitate the activation of surface reconstruction into true catalytic activity centers at lower potentials. Moreover, it demonstrates exceptional durability, maintaining stable oxygen production at a high current density of 300 mA cm−2 for over 120 hours. This work not only presents a novel pathway for designing advanced electrocatalysts but also deepens our understanding of defect-engineered catalytic mechanisms, showcasing the potential for rapid and efficient enhancement of electrocatalytic performance.

Abstract:It has been extensively researched that oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline conditions involves dynamic surface restructuring. In particular, the development and design of sulfide/oxide pre-catalyst can reasonably adjust the composition and structure after surface reconstruction, which is very important for oxygen evolution reaction. Herein, a simple two-step hydrothermal method was used to achieve in situ S leaching and doping by precipitation-dissolution equilibrium, inducing the composition change and structure reconstruction of CoFe oxides. In addition, the cross-linked nanosheet structure generated in situ widely exposes the active area, and the crystal/amorphous interface accelerates the charge and mass transfer efficiency. The structurally transformed FeOOH and CoOOH showed excellent OER activity, with overpotentials of 299 and 322.2 mV at 50 and 100 mA cm −2 , significantly superior to one-step or uncured catalysts. Low-cost iron based materials combined with simple methods can be easily mass-produced. This provides an opportunity for the effective design of heterogeneous surface reconfigurable electrocatalysts for practical water electrolysis.

Abstract:The selective two-electron electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) for hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) production is a promising and green alternative method to the current energy-intensive anthraquinone process used in industry. In this study, we develop a single-atom catalyst (CNT-D-O-Fe) by anchoring defect-stabilized and oxygen-coordinated iron atomic sites (Fe–O 4 ) onto porous carbon nanotubes using a local etching strategy. Compared to O-doped CNTs with vacancy defects (CNT-D-O) and oxygen-coordinated Fe single-atom site modifying CNTs without a porous structure (CNT-O-Fe), CNT-D-O-Fe exhibits the highest H 2 O 2 selectivity of 94.4% with a kinetic current density of 13.4 mA cm −2 . Fe–O 4 single-atom sites in the catalyst probably contribute to the intrinsic reactivity for the two-electron transfer process while vacancy defects greatly enhance the electrocatalytic stability. Theoretical calculations further support that the coordinated environment and defective moiety in CNT-D-O-Fe could efficiently optimize the adsorption strength of the *OOH intermediate over the Fe single atomic active sites. This contribution sheds light on the potential of defect-stabilized and oxygen-coordinated single-atom metal sites as a promising avenue for the rational design of highly efficient and selective catalysts towards various electrocatalytic reactions.

Abstract:Highly active Fe‐NiOOH obtained from Fe‐NiC2O4 precursor via in situ electrochemical oxidation demonstrates outstanding OER activity with a low overpotential of 220 mV at a current density of 100 mA cm−2. Water electrolysis using renewable electricity is a promising strategy for high‐purity hydrogen production. To realize the practical application of water electrolysis, an electrocatalyst with high redox properties and low cost is essential for enhancing the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction. Herein, we fabricated Fe‐doped nickel oxalate (Fe‐NiC2O4) directly grown on nickel (Ni) foam as an efficient electrocatalyst for the alkaline oxygen evolution reaction using a facile one‐step hydrothermal method. Fe‐NiC2O4 served as a precursor for obtaining highly active Fe‐doped Ni oxyhydroxide (Fe‐NiOOH) via in situ electrochemical oxidation. Consequently, 0.75Fe‐NiOOH was demonstrated to be the optimal electrocatalyst, exhibiting outstanding oxygen evolution reaction activity with a low overpotential of 220 mV at a current density of 100 mA cm−2 and a Tafel slope of 20.5 mV dec−1. Furthermore, Fe‐NiOOH maintained its oxygen evolution reaction activity without performance decay during long‐term electrochemical measurements, owing to the phase transformation from nickel oxyhydroxide (NiOOH) to γ‐NiOOH (gamma nickel oxyhydroxide). These performances significantly surpass those of recently reported transition‐metal‐based electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Sustainable production of hydrogen by water splitting requires the exploration of highly efficient electrocatalysts from abundant non-precious metals on Earth. Ni(OH)2 hollow nanorod arrays were obtained on Ni foam by simple alkali etching, and FeOOH was electrodeposited on the walls of hollow nanorods to construct FeOOH@Ni(OH)2 sandwich hollow nanorod arrays, which help overcome the drawbacks of the poor conductivity and poor stability of FeOOH and boost the catalytic performance of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in comparison with the individual components. A fully contacted three-dimensional nanorod array structure provides many exposed catalytically active sites and promotes charge transfer during the electrochemical OER process. The presence of FeOOH can promote the formation of a more conductive catalytically active component, NiOOH, which improves the catalytic performance of Ni(OH)2. The electronic interaction and synergistic catalysis between nickel and iron enhances the electrochemical performance of the catalyst significantly. The optimized FeOOH@Ni(OH)2 sandwich hollow nanorod arrays show an outstanding OER activity with a small overpotential of 245 mV at 50 mA cm-2 and a low Tafel slope of 45 mV dec-1. The catalyst can maintain a substantially constant voltage over 40 h in 1.0 M KOH solution. Our work provides a new strategy to prepare Ni-Fe bimetallic materials as OER electrocatalysts.

Abstract:We demonstrate a straightforward method for the synthesis of the high-performance double-hydroxide (Fe(OH)3‖Ni(OH)2) nanoporous composite electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). A nanoporous Ni(OH)2 film was electrochemically deposited using water electrolysis, in which hydrogen bubbles acted as a dynamic template, and the generated hydroxide ions caused precipitation of Ni2+ ions from the solution. The capillary action of nanopores was used to introduce Fe3+ ions that were precipitated in the nanopores by dipping into a KOH solution. A series of characterization methods and electrochemical techniques were used to characterize the physicochemical properties and electrocatalytic behavior of the prepared catalyst toward OER. Experimental results suggest that the incorporation of Fe(OH)3 into the nanoporous Ni(OH)2 film to a level of ~4%mol can significantly enhance its electrocatalytic activity toward OER. The OER current density observed for as-synthesized Fe(OH)3‖Ni(OH)2 was higher by a factor of 3.9 compared to the original nanoporous Ni(OH)2. The enhanced performance resulted from the interfacial synergistic effects between the two hydroxides, likely due to the improved electronic structure and increased density of oxygen vacancies. Our synthetic method is quite simple, cost-effective, and holds great potential for practical application in water electrolysis.

Abstract:The low-cost and high-performance electrocatalysts, especially metal (oxy)hydroxides, for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) have attracted considerable attention due to their promising OER activity. Amorphous electrocatalysts are often superior to their crystalline counterparts due to their more actives and structural flexibility. However, using traditional preparation techniques still presents a significant barrier. Herein, the amorphous NiFe (oxy)hydroxides on nickel foam (NF) with large surface area and small charge transfer resistance were fabricated by electrodeposition technique. The as-fabricated NiFe (oxy)hydroxides (Ni:Fe = 1:3) exhibited remarkable electrocatalytic activity and stability for OER with a low overpotential of 245 mV at a current density of 100 mA cm –2 , a small Tafel slope of 76.9 mV dec −1 , which was superior to that of noble metal electrocatalysts (RuO 2 ) and most NiFe-based electrocatalysts. This work provides a facile and effective way to synthesis metal (oxy)hydroxide catalysts towards high-efficiency water splitting.

Abstract:High-performance oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst is critical for improving the water splitting efficiency. In this work, an efficient self-supported OER catalyst was prepared by electrodeposition of nickel-iron layered double hydroxide nanosheets on titanium mesh substrate (NiFe-LDH/Ti-mesh). This self-supporting design exposes abundant active sites. At 100 mA cm(-2), the NiFe-LDH/Ti-mesh shows a low overpotential of 310 mV in 1.0 M KOH. When assembled into an anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer, it can run stably over 200 h. In-situ Raman reveals that the NiFe-LDH/Ti-mesh surface was reconstructed into NiFeOOH active species. In-situ infrared shows that the introduction of Fe promotes the evolution of oxygen intermediates. Theoretical calculations reveal a weakened binding strength of *OH and accelerated formation of *O in OER by the introduction of Fe. This study provides a facile approach for developing self-supported high-performance OER electrocatalyst, and advances the understanding on the origin of NiFe-based catalysts as well.

Abstract:In view of the sluggish kinetics suppressing the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), developing efficient and robust OER catalysts is urgent and essential for developing efficient energy conversion technologies. Herein, hybrid amorphous/crystalline FeCoNi layered double hydroxide (LDH)‐supported single Ru atoms (Ru SAs/AC‐FeCoNi) are developed for enabling a highly efficient electrocatalytic OER. The amorphous outer layer in Ru SAs/AC‐FeCoNi is composed of abundant defect sites and unsaturated coordination sites, which can serve as anchoring sites to stabilize single Ru atoms. The crystalline inner has a highly symmetric rigid structure, thereby strengthening the stability of support for a long‐lasting OER. The synergistic effects endow this hybrid catalyst with extremely low overpotential (205 mV at 10 mA cm−2). Density functional theory calculation indicates that single Ru atoms stabilized by hybrid amorphous/crystalline FeCoNi LDH facilitate the formation of Ru–O* (rate‐determining step), thus accelerating the OER process.
