Abstract:Background: Violence is a leading global public health problem, and interventions in early childhood are important in the primary prevention of violence. We tested whether the Irie Classroom Toolbox, a violence-prevention teacher-training programme reduced violence against children by teachers and reduced class-wide child aggression in Jamaican preschools (catering to children aged 3-6 years). Methods: We did a single-blind, cluster-randomised controlled trial in 76 preschools in Kingston and St Andrew, randomly selected, using simple randomisation, from 120 eligible preschools. Inclusion criteria were two to four classes of children; at least ten children per class; and located in an urban area. We randomly assigned preschools (1:1) to either the Irie Classroom Toolbox intervention or waiting-list control that received no intervention, using a computer-generated randomisation sequence by an independent statistician masked to school identity. The Toolbox involved training teachers in classroom behaviour management and promoting child social-emotional competence. All assessors were masked to group assignment. All teachers and classrooms in the selected schools participated in the study. Within each school, we used simple randomisation to randomly select up to 12 children aged 4 years for evaluation of child outcomes. The Toolbox intervention was implemented from August to April the following year. Teacher and classroom measures were done at baseline (the summer school term; ie, May to June), post-intervention (after 8 months of intervention; ie, May to June of the following year), and 1-year follow-up (ie, May to June 2 years later). The primary outcomes were observations of violence against children (including physical violence and psychological aggression) by teachers occurring across one full school day, and class-wide child aggression occurring over five 20-min intervals on another school day, all measured at post-intervention and 1-year follow-up and analysed by intention to treat. This trial is registered with ISRCTN, number ISRCTN11968472. Findings: Between June 22, 2015, and April 29, 2016, (after baseline measurements were completed), we assigned 38 preschools (with 119 teachers) to the Toolbox intervention and 38 preschools (with 110 teachers) to control. 441 children in the intervention schools and 424 in the control schools were included in the evaluation. All schools were included in the post-intervention and follow-up analyses. There were fewer counts of violence against children by teachers in the intervention schools compared with control schools at post-intervention (median counts 3 [IQR 0-11] vs 15 [3-35]; effect size -67·12%, 95% CI -80·71 to -53·52, p<0·0001) and 1-year follow-up (median counts 3 [IQR 0-9] vs 6 [1-16]; effect size -53·86, 95% CI -71·08 to -36·65, p<0·0001). No differences between groups were found for class-wide child aggression at post-intervention (effect size 0·07, 95% CI -0·16 to 0·29, p=0·72) or 1-year follow-up (-0·14, -0·42 to 0·16, p=0·72). Interpretation: In Jamaican preschools, the Irie Classroom Toolbox effectively reduced violence against children by teachers. The Toolbox was designed for use with undertrained teachers working in low-resource settings and should be effective with early childhood practitioners in other LMICs. Additional research is needed to further develop the Toolbox to reduce class-wide child aggression. Effect of transporting an evidence-based, violence prevention intervention to Jamaican preschools on teacher and class-wide child behaviour: a cluster randomised trial

Abstract:Introduction. Based on extensive piloting work, we adapted the Incredible Years (IY) teacher-training programme to the Jamaican preschool setting and evaluated this adapted version through a cluster-randomised trial. Methods. Twenty-four community preschools in Kingston, Jamaica were randomly assigned to intervention (12 schools, 37 teachers) or control (12 schools, 36 teachers). The intervention involved training teachers in classroom management through eight full-day training workshops and four individual 1-h in-class support sessions. Outcome measurements included direct observation of teachers’ positive and negative behaviours to the whole class and to high-risk children and four observer ratings: two measures of class-wide child behaviour and two measures of classroom atmosphere. Measures were repeated at a six-month follow-up. Results. Significant benefits of intervention were found for teachers’ positive [effect size (ES) = 3.35] and negative (ES = 1.29) behaviours to the whole class and to high-risk children (positive: ES = 0.83; negative: ES = 0.50) and for observer ratings of class-wide child behaviour (ES = 0.73), child interest and enthusiasm (ES = 0.98), teacher warmth (ES = 2.03) and opportunities provided to share and help (ES = 5.72). At 6-month follow-up, significant benefits of intervention were sustained: positive behaviours (ES = 2.70), negative behaviours (ES = 0.98), child behaviour (ES = 0.50), child interest and enthusiasm (ES = 0.78), teacher warmth (ES = 0.91), opportunities to share and help (ES = 1.42). Conclusions. The adapted IY teacher-training programme produced large benefits to teacher's behaviour and to class-wide measures of children's behaviour, which were sustained at 6-month follow-up. Benefits were of a similar magnitude to those found in a pilot study of the minimally adapted version that required significantly more in-class support for teachers.

Abstract:Objective We explored the experiences and perceptions of school staff and students with the EmpaTeach intervention to prevent teachers' violence against school students. Design This qualitative study involved in-depth interviews with 58 and 39 participants at midline and endline, respectively, with Burundian and Congolese intervention schools in Nyarugusu refugee camp. They comprised three education coordinators of primary and secondary schools, 29 EmpaTeach intervention coordinators, 14 stakeholders including headteachers and discipline teachers, 25 classroom teachers and 26 students. Thematic analysis was used to develop codes by examining the content of quotes to capture key themes in line with the key elements of the programme theory. Results Coordinators and teachers widely reported positive experiences with the EmpaTeach programme. The intervention sessions enabled teachers to reflect on their own values and experiences of corporal punishment and equipped them with useful and acceptable classroom management and alternative discipline strategies. Teachers adopted the use of counselling, praise and reward, and joint discussions with students and parents. On the other hand, several teachers reported persistent use of corporal punishment which they attributed to children's (mis)behaviours and strong beliefs that beating was a positive approach to disciplining students. Conclusion The majority of coordinators and teachers widely accepted the EmpaTeach intervention as it offered useful and relevant knowledge and skills on alternative disciplinary methods. Students noticed some positive changes on the way they were being disciplined by teachers, where non-violent methods were used. Further research is needed to understand how violence prevention interventions can successfully lead to reductions in violence in fragile settings. Trial registration number NCT03745573.

Abstract:A 1-year-old immunodeficient boy developed brawny edema of the left foot. Lymphoscintigraphy revealed no evidence of left inguinal activity following pedal injection of Tc-99m-Sn phosphate. Over the next two months, the patient developed lymphedema on the right and repeat scintigraphy demonstrated no movement of isotope from the dorsum of either foot. Subsequent studies identified microfilaria in a nocturnal blood smear, which were thought to represent Brugia beaveri acquired by mosquito transmission in Oklahoma.

Abstract:Background Little academic research has been conducted on how people conceptualise 'violence' and 'discipline', especially in humanitarian settings. This may limit the transferability of violence prevention interventions. This paper examines the understanding of violence and discipline concepts among students, teachers, and parents in the Nyarugusu Refugee Camp in Tanzania. Methods A qualitative study was undertaken as part of the larger trial testing the effectiveness of the EmpaTeach intervention to prevent physical violence from teachers to students implemented in 27 schools in Nyarugusu Refugee Camp. Data from baseline and midline surveys in control schools that did not receive the intervention informed this paper where a total of 14 in-depth interviews (eight with students and six teachers) and six focus group discussions (two with teachers and four with parents from the Parent Teacher Association) were analyzed. Both audio recordings from in-depth interviews and focus group discussions were transcribed verbatim, and translated from Kiswahili to English (Congolese) and Kirundi to English (Burundian). Translated data were verified and coded using thematic analysis based on the views of students, teachers, and parents. Results Participants revealed that the same behavioural acts could be differentially classified as violence or discipline. Violence was understood in relation to the consequences of acts, which could include physical or psychological harm, or other harms which were seen as detrimental to children's futures and life chances, particularly adolescent pregnancy. Sexual acts without consent were also seen as violence. In contrast, discipline was understood according to intent, and perceived acts done towards students to correct bad behaviour. Conclusion Results imply that education about the harmful consequences of behavioural acts intended as discipline, may be important for violence prevention interventions and that framing interventions in terms of positive child development could help change discipline strategies in schools.

A child-to-child programme in rural Jamaica

Abstract:A child-to-child programme was carried out in six rural schools in Jamaica. School children in grades 4 and 5 were taught concepts of nutrition, environmental and personal hygiene, and child development. The children were encouraged to take messages home to their parents and improve the care of their younger siblings. Four hundred and twenty-three children and 90 mothers and guardians from four of the project schools were evaluated and compared with 199 children and 47 parents from two control schools. The project children showed higher scores on a test of knowledge in the topics at the end of the year. They also improved in some practices at home. The mothers improved in knowledge in some areas but not in their practices. We consider the results sufficiently encouraging to justify incorporating the programme into the country's education curriculum for primary schools.

Abstract:Background: Violence against children at home and at school is particularly prevalent in Africa and is associated with adverse and persistent health effects on children. The violence prevention intervention Interaction Competencies with Children - for Teachers (ICC-T) is an effective tool to reduce violence against children by fostering teachers' non-violent communication and interaction skills. To enhance these effects, in the present study, ICC-T will be extended to parents (ICC-P) aiming to increase children's experience of consistent behavior and application of non-violent discipline strategies between teachers and parents. Methods: To investigate the effectiveness of the school-based combined implementation of ICC-T and ICC-P, a cluster-randomized controlled trial with 16 primary schools in the urban district of Morogoro in Eastern Tanzania will be conducted. Both quantitative (structured interviews) and qualitative (focus group discussions, in-depth interviews, evaluation forms) methods will be used to investigate the effects on teachers' and parents' violence against children in home and school settings. The intervention implementation will be accompanied by a comprehensive process evaluation to assess the implementation quality of and participants' engagement with ICC-T and ICC-P. Potential downstream effects of violence reduction will be investigated by assessing the children's mental health and well-being. Discussion: The present study aims to provide evidence for the feasibility, acceptability, and effectiveness of the school-based combined implementation of ICC-T and ICC-P to reduce teacher and parental violence against children and contribute to children's well-being in home and school settings. Abstract:Objective Violence against children (VAC) is a global public health and human rights issue that can lead to long‐lasting negative consequences for individual and societal outcomes. While extensive evidence indicates that parenting programmes might be effective in preventing VAC, there are several unsolved questions on how to ensure interventions are acceptable, feasible, effective and sustainable, particularly in low‐ and‐ middle‐income countries (LMICs). Method In this study, we report findings from a qualitative examination of policymakers' (N = 10), early childhood and parenting programme facilitators' (N = 20) and parents' and other caregivers' (N = 38) perspectives on VAC prevention to examine the implementation ecosystem of parenting programmes in Colombia, including contextual risk and protection factors, features of existing programmes, and stakeholders' needs. We conducted interviews and focus groups using a semistructured format, along with a thematic approach, to analyse the data from each group of participants (i.e., policymakers, facilitators and caregivers) independently. Results Overall, the data revealed the critical role of intersecting and interacting factors at the micro (e.g., caregivers' capabilities and beliefs), meso (e.g., programme content and delivery approaches) and macro (e.g., policymakers' vision and existing infrastructure) levels in exacerbating risks/imposing barriers versus protecting/promoting VAC prevention. Conclusions These findings provide evidence on the implementation ecosystem of prevention programmes to inform the design of novel strategies and programmes aimed at preventing violence and promoting families' well‐being and young children's development.

Abstract:Research Findings: The Incredible Years Teacher Classroom Management (IY-TCM) program has shown efficacy in reducing behavioral problems and improving social skills among children experiencing poverty. However, quantitative studies that concentrate on its efficacy in relation to "proximal classroom outcomes" (e.g., classroom emotional and managerial interactions between teachers and children) and teacher psychological factors (e.g., self-efficacy and stress) are still needed. This study assesses the efficacy of the IY-TCM program with Portuguese teachers of economically disadvantaged preschool children. Measures included a) classroom observation of teacher behaviors and b) teacher self-reports of their practices, confidence, self-efficacy, and job-related stress associated with inappropriate student behaviors. A wait-list randomized controlled study was conducted with 65 female Portuguese teachers reporting pre- and post-intervention assessments. Moderation analyses were conducted to explore differential benefits of teacher, classroom and children's variables. Significant differences favoring intervention teachers were found in teacher reports of their classroom practices (positive and inappropriate). Observational findings showed a positive intervention effect on the use of labeled praise but not on other teacher classroom behaviors. Participating in the program did not impact the teachers' confidence/self-efficacy and job-related stress. Moderation analysis were found to be non-significant. Practice or Policy: Providing the IY-TCM program to early childhood teachers can contribute to an increase of their reported use and usefulness of effective classroom management practices and their use of labeled praise, thus contributing to the quality of early childhood education across a population of children experiencing poverty.

Abstract:Globally, many children are exposed to violent discipline in multiple settings. Interventions to prevent violent discipline are therefore highly needed. In the present study, the feasibility of the intervention Interaction Competencies with Children – for Parents (ICC-P), an additional module of a school-based intervention for teachers, was tested. The intervention aims to prevent violent discipline by changing attitudes towards such method and fostering supportive adult-child interaction through non-violent interaction skills.

Integrating Early Child Development and Violence Prevention Programs: A Systematic Review

Abstract:Limited evidence describes promoting development and reducing violence in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), a missed opportunity to protect children and promote development and human capital. This study presents a systematic literature review of integrated early childhood development plus violence prevention (ECD+VP) interventions in LMICs. The search yielded 5,244 unique records, of which N = 6 studies met inclusion criteria. Interventions were in Chile, Jamaica, Lebanon, Mexico, Mozambique, and Turkey. Five interventions were parent education programs, including center-based sessions (n = 3) and home visiting (n = 2), while one intervention was a teacher education program. All but one study reported improvements in both child development and maltreatment outcomes. The dearth of evidence on ECD+VP interventions suggests additional research is needed. Integrated ECD+VP interventions may improve multiple child outcome domains while leveraging limited resources in LMICs.

Abstract:Violence against young children is known to have detrimental short and long-term effects. Yet, few studies investigate the prevalence of violence against young children, particularly very young children under the age of 2 years. This paper reports on the prevalence of violence against young children in Jamaica using data obtained from the JA KIDS birth cohort study that undertook pre-enrolment of pregnant mothers in the antenatal period and followed full or sub-samples of parents and children at 9–12 months, 18–22 months and 4–5 years. Violence in pregnancy was experienced by 6.1% of pre-enrolled mothers. As many as 43.1% of Jamaican children ages 9–12 months were shouted at, and almost 30% were slapped. Physical and emotional violence increased with age, and by 4–5 years, approximately 90% of children experienced physical and emotional violence. Non-violent methods, primarily explaining and reasoning with children, were also reported by more than 95% of parents at 4–5 years. Corporal punishment was the most common form of violence experienced, but young children also witnessed hurtful physical and emotional violence between mothers and their partners and lived in communities in which there were violent events. Strategies to reduce young children's experiences as victims and witnesses of violence are discussed.

Combining parenting and economic strengthening programmes to reduce violence against children: a cluster randomised controlled trial with predominantly male caregivers in rural Tanzania

Abstract:Introduction: Parenting programmes may reduce the risk of violence against children and improve child well-being. However, additional economic support may be necessary in highly deprived rural communities in sub-Saharan Africa. Furthermore, delivering programmes within farmer groups may increase male caregiver recruitment and engagement. Methods: A parallel cluster randomised controlled trial examined the combined and separate effects of parenting and economic strengthening programmes on reducing violence against children aged 0-18 years in farming communities in Tanzania (n=248 families; 63% male caregivers). Eight villages were randomly assigned to four conditions (2:2:2:2): (1) 12-session parenting programme (n=60); (2) agribusiness training (n=56); (3) parenting and agribusiness combined (n=72); (4) control (n=60). Parent-report, child-report and early childhood observation assessments were conducted at baseline, mid-treatment and post-treatment. Primary outcomes were child maltreatment and parenting behaviour. Secondary outcomes included corporal punishment endorsement, parenting stress, parent/child depression, child behaviour, economic well-being and child development. Results: At post-treatment, parents and children receiving the combined interventions reported less maltreatment (parents: incidence rate ratio (IRR=0.40, 95% CI 0.24 to 0.65; children: IRR=0.40, 95% CI 0.17 to 0.92). Parents reported reduced endorsement of corporal punishment (Dw =-0.43, 95% CI -0.79 to 0.07) and fewer child behaviour problems (Dw =-0.41, 95% CI -0.77 to 0.05). Parents in parenting-only villages reported less abuse (IRR=0.36, 95% CI 0.21 to 0.63) and fewer child behaviour problems (Dw =-0.47, 95% CI -0.84 to 0.11). Parents in agribusiness-only villages reported fewer child behaviour problems (Dw =-0.43, 95% CI -0.77 to 0.08) and greater household wealth (Dw =0.57, 95% CI 0.08 to 1.06). However, children in agribusiness-only villages reported increased physical abuse (IRR=2.26, 95% CI 1.00 to 5.12) and less positive parenting (Dw =-0.50, 95% CI -0.91 to 0.10). There were no other adverse effects. Conclusion: Parent training may be the active ingredient in reducing maltreatment in farmer groups with majority male caregivers, while agribusiness training programmes may have unintended negative consequences on children when delivered alone. Locating parenting support in existing farmer groups can engage much higher proportions of fathers than stand-alone programmes.ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT02633319.
Effectiveness of a new granular formulation of biolarvicide Bacillus thuringiensis Var. israelensis against larvae of malaria vectors in India.

Abstract:Control of vector(s) or mosquitoes, in general, through biolarvicide as an alternate biocontrol agent is a greatest desire. We evaluated a water-dispersible granular formulation biolarvicide Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (Bti, H-14 serotype; VectoBac(®) WDG) in the laboratory and also in the field against two principal malaria vectors, Anopheles culicifacies and Anopheles stephensi. Laboratory evaluations against laboratory-reared immature of the two species were carried out at a temperature of 28°C ± 2°C and 70%-80% relative humidity. Field trials were conducted in a rural area and in Bangalore city, Karnataka, South India. First trial against the rural vector An. culicifacies was carried out in stone quarry pits at dosages of 0.05, 0.2, and 1 g/m(2). The second trial against urban vector An. stephensi was carried out in ring wells at 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, and 1 g/m(2) dosages. Laboratory tests revealed increased efficacy against An. stephensi. The fifty percent lethal concentration (LC(50)) and LC(90) values against An. culicifacies and An. stephensi were 0.348 and 1.008 mg/L (χ(2) = 8.49; p > 0.05) and 0.245 and 0.533 mg/L (χ(2) = 4.67; p < 0.05), respectively. Based on the findings of no pupal production in the field, the formulation was effective up to 14 days at 0.2 g/m(2) or more appropriately at 0.25 g/m(2) dose for both the species under field conditions. We discuss how this new formulation was evaluated against An. culicifacies and An. stephensi under laboratory and field conditions. No adverse effects were observed on the nontarget species such as frogs, their tadpoles, small local fish, Notonectid bugs, and water scatters. We conclude that VectoBac WDG is effective at 0.25 g/m(2) and be recommended for its use in the vector-borne disease control program under integrated vector management concept.

Protecting children from sexual abuse and ensuring primary prevention approaches has been a predominant task for LMICs. The research objective is to evaluate the effectiveness of the "teach to say-NO" blended theory-based CSA prevention program by measuring knowledge and attitudes and analyzing the feasibility and acceptability of the intervention among primary school teachers in a school environment. Participants and setting: In total, 146 primary schoolteachers from 27 public schools in Phnom Penh, Cambodia were employed. and 29 teachers were employed for the qualitative study. Method: The study was designed as a mixed-method study, consisting of a quasi-experimental study and a qualitative case study. The "teach to say-NO" program was delivered to intervention schoolteachers for 4 weeks. Both groups completed knowledge and attitude questionnaires at baseline, first, and second follow-up. The qualitative study was evaluated through in-depth face-to-face interviews conducted to analyze the feasibility and acceptability of intervention. Results: Study participants had poor knowledge on CSA and at baseline the knowledge (t = 0.72, d = 0.131) and attitude (t = -0.069, d = -0.011) scores between the intervention and comparison groups were the same. After the intervention participants demonstrated a significant improvement (p < 0.05) within and between groups. The feasibility and acceptability of the intervention "teach to say-NO" themes were coded into three main areas: interest of participation, challenging factors, and benefits. Conclusion: These findings suggest the presence of knowledge gaps concerning child sexual abuse among teachers, thus highlighting the imperative for training in this field to enhance teachers' knowledge on CSA prevention.
Effects of Two Early Parenting Programmes on Child Aggression and Risk for Violence in Brazil: a Randomised Controlled Trial

Abstract:Violence is a major public health problem globally, with the highest rates in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) in the Americas and southern Africa. Parenting programmes in high-income countries can diminish risk for violence, by reducing risk factors such as child aggression and harsh parenting, and increasing protective factors such as child cognitive development and school readiness. However, there is critical need to identify low-cost programmes with replicable benefits that work in real-world LMICs contexts. A three-arm, randomised, single-blind trial evaluated effects of two low-cost, group-based parenting programmes recommended for LMICs (ACT: Raising Safe Kids; DBS: dialogic book-sharing) on child aggression (primary outcome), child development, parenting, maltreatment, and stress. Participants were 369 children with medium-high levels of aggression (mean age 3.1 years at baseline) in poor households. Interventions were implemented in city health and education services in southern Brazil. Maternal reports, filmed observations, child tasks, and hair cortisol were assessed at baseline, 1-month post-intervention, and 8-month follow-up. Intention-to-treat analyses compared each of ACT and DBS with a control group. Three hundred sixty-eight (99.7%) participants completed follow-up assessments 8 months after the interventions. There was no effect of ACT (standardised mean difference, SMD 0.11, 95% CI - 0.05, 0.27) or DBS (SMD 0.05, 95% CI - 0.11, 0.21) on the primary outcome of child aggression. ACT reduced harsh parenting behaviour post-intervention (SMD - 0.23; 95% CI - 0.46, - 0.01), but not at follow-up. DBS improved book-sharing practices at both time points (e.g., maternal sensitivity at follow-up SMD 0.33; 95% CI 0.08, 0.57). There were no benefits of either programme for other parenting, child development, or stress outcomes. Two parenting programmes in Brazil had small effects on parenting practices but did not reduce child aggression or several other important risk/protective factors for violence. Effective early interventions that reduce violence in real-world LMIC settings are highly desirable but may be challenging to achieve.

Abstract:Using monoclonal antibodies (MCA) to measles virus (strain Leningrad-16) hemagglutinin, a competitive enzyme immunoassay (cEIA) was developed for the detection and titration of antihemagglutinating antibodies in human sera. Serum samples from children, collected in measles foci, were tested in cEIA, SP-EIA, HI, and PHA tests. The results evidence a high correlation of antihemagglutinin titres in cEIA and HI tests, the correlation coefficient of cEIA and PHA being 97.7%. The cEIA based on MCA to measles virus hemagglutinin is highly specific for the detection and titration of measles antihemagglutinins, it does not involve the use of simian erythrocytes. A significant advantage of this test system consists in the possibility of using unpurified antigen prepared from the infected cell lysate.
Measuring the impact of a training intervention for early childhood centre staff on child development outcomes: Findings from a cluster randomized control field trial in rural Malawi

Abstract:BackgroundEvidence from low-income settings around early education interventions that can improve young children's development is sparse, particularly with regards to the most marginalised children. This study used a two-arm parallel cluster randomised control design to evaluate the impact of an adapted staff training programme on the developmental outcomes of chidlren attending community-based early learning centres in Thyolo district, rural Malawi. MethodsAt baseline we randomly selected 48 centres, from each of which 20 children were randomly selected, although data from one centre was incomplete resulting in 932 children from 47 centres. Centres were randomly allocated to either the intervention or control arm. Twelve months later follow-up data was collected from 44 centres. At baseline and endline CBCC managers provided information about the centre, and parents/guardians provided information on the children, including the primary outcomes of age-standardised development scores in the Language and Social domains, measured using the Malawi Developmental Assessment Tool. Children in the bottom 2.5 percentile of either domain were considered to have a delay; a third outcome variable, Any Delay, was developed to indicate children with a delay in either or both domains. Centre-level mean scores were calculated, and linear regression models constructed to assess differences between baseline and endline and between allocation groups. ResultsAnalysis of the difference between baseline and endline measures in the allocation groups shows a non-significant reduction in delay associated with the study intervention across all domains. Adjustment for baseline characteristics within the CBCCs showed little impact on the magnitude of the observed effect, and the difference remained non-significant. ConclusionsDespite no observed differences between allocation groups, the data did indicate a positive change in the intervention groups in both domains, particularly Language. Community-based early learning in Malawi holds tremendous potential for promoting inclusive development and learning.

Abstract:In eukaryotic cells, the serine-threonine-specific kinase cdc2 induces entry into mitosis by phosphorylation of several proteins including cyclin (pp62) with which it forms a tight complex. We show here that cdc2 and several phosphoproteins in the range of 56 to 62 kilodaltons (kDa), associated with cdc2, serve as in vitro substrates for the v-fms-specific tyrosine kinase. This is the first demonstration of in vitro phosphorylation of a physiologically relevant substrate through the v-fms specific kinase. In addition, cdc2 phosphorylated the v-fms polypeptides in serine and threonine residues. The biological significance of the mutual phosphorylations is discussed.
