Abstract:In this work, the controlled epitaxial growth of ultrathin Pd shells of a few atomic layers (denoted as nL) on the surfaces of gold nanoparticle (Au NP) cores of different morphologies (trisoctahedral, cubic, and spherical shapes) in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) was achieved by regulating the pH value of the aqueous CTAC solution and finely tuning the amount of the Pd precursor. It was found that the critical shell thickness for epitaxial Pd growth at the optimal pH value was 4 atomic layers, taking {331}-faceted trisoctahedral (TOH) Au@Pd-nL NPs as an example, on the basis of the results of atomic-resolution high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) images. Moreover, the resulting TOH Au@Pd-1L NPs (100.9 m(2) g(-1), 13.2 A mg(Pd)(-1) and 13.1 mA cm(-2)) exhibited excellent electrocatalytic performance and long-term electrocatalytic activity for ethanol oxidation, around 4.8-fold, 66-fold, and 21.8-fold better than commercial Pd/C catalysts (31 m(2) g(-1), 0.2 A mg(Pd)(-1), and 0.6 mA cm(-2)). Furthermore, the resulting TOH Au@Pd-1L NPs not only markedly enhance the chemical catalytic activity for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), but also allow the in situ surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) monitoring of the reaction process of the Pd-catalyzed reduction of 4-NTP. Thus, our work may provide a new way to fabricate core-shell (CS) bimetallic NPs with the merits of both metal outer shells (excellent catalytic performance in electrocatalysis and chemical catalysis) and Au NP cores (reaction process by in situ SERS monitoring).
Plasmon-Determined Selectivity in Photocatalytic Transformations on Gold and Gold-Palladium Nanostructures

Abstract:Noble metal nanostructures absorb light producing coherent oscillations of the metal's electrons, so-called localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs). LSPRs can decay generating hot carriers, highly energetic species that trigger chemical transformations in the molecules located on the metal surfaces. The number of chemical reactions can be expanded by coupling noble and catalytically active metals. However, it remains unclear whether such mono- and bimetallic nanostructures possess any sensitivity toward one or another chemical reaction if both of them can take place in one molecular analyte. In this study, we utilize tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS), an emerging analytical technique that has single-molecule sensitivity and sub-nanometer spatial resolution, to investigate plasmon-driven reactivity of 2-nitro-5-thiolobenzoic acid (2-N-5TBA) on gold and gold@palladium nanoplates (AuNPs and Au@PdNPs). This molecular analyte possesses both nitro and carboxyl groups, which can be reduced or removed by hot carriers. We found that on AuNPs, 2-N-5TBA dimerized forming 4,4'-dimethylazobenzene (DMAB), the bicarbonyl derivative of DMAB, as well as 4-nitrobenzenethiol (4-NBT). Our accompanying theoretical investigation based on density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) confirmed these findings. The theoretical analysis shows that 2-N-5TBA first dimerized forming the bicarbonyl derivative of DMAB, which then decarboxylated forming DMAB. Finally, DMAB can be further reduced leading to 4-NBT. This reaction mechanism is supported by TERS-determined yields on these three molecules on AuNPs. We also found that on Au@PdNPs, 2-N-5TBA first formed the bicarbonyl derivative of DMAB, which is then reduced to both bihydroxyl-DMAB and 4-amino-3-mercaptobenzoic acid. The yield of these reaction products on Au@PdNPs strictly follows the free-energy potential of these molecules on the metallic surfaces.

Abstract:Gold nanoparticles (AuNP) are widely used for reaction catalysis. The common understanding is that the smaller the particles, the more reactive they are. It is reported here that this is not always the case for citrate (Ct) or polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) stabilized AuNP in the catalytic reduction of 4‐nitrophenol with sodium borohydride (NaBH4), when the total surface area is kept constant. The results prove that for AuNP in the size range of 10–58 nm, the reactivity increases with increasing particle diameter for the investigated model reaction. The trend of catalytic activity is independent of the conjugated ligands for citrate and PVP ligands. Purely based on size and resulting surface area, the trend in catalytic activity is unexpected. Only a more detailed structural investigation revealed that internal structure parameters like defect tendency also play a strong role. Larger AuNP possess more defects between crystalline domains. Further, the influence of the ligand density on the surface of AuNP and the diffusion effect of reactants are excluded for the nitrophenol reduction. Gold nanoparticles (AuNP) of different sizes are investigated in the nitrophenol reduction with keeping the total surface area same. The catalytic activity is found to be higher with AuNP of larger sizes. This observation is linked to more defects populating on the surface of larger AuNP, which might result in more active sites on the surface of AuNP.

Abstract:The functionalization of organic ligands on nanoparticles (NPs) to create metal-organic interfaces can tune the activity and selectivity of catalytic reactions. Comparing to well-documented electronic and steric contribution of organic ligands, the coverage of ligands is also a significant factor but has been rarely investigated. Herein, we employ two methods, potential cycling (Figure 1c) and thermal annealing, to judiciously remove the surface ligands from gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and systematically investigate the influence of surface coverage of ligands on the catalytic performance. Potential cycling enables a mild removal of ligands without changing the size of AuNPs (Figure 1a and Figure 1b) and thus provides ideal models to identify the intrinsic influence of surface coverage of ligands on oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The ORR activity and selectivity is quantitatively evaluated by plotting half potential and transferred electron number versus the surface coverage of ligand. Thermal annealing at different temperatures produces different sized AuNPs with various surface ligand coverage. However, it is suggested that the surface coverage of ligand plays a more significant role on ORR than the particle size of AuNPs. Capping AuNPs with oleylamine and sodium citrate and the reverse poisoning clean AuNPs with thiol, butylamine and CTAB further reveal the difference of ORR activity/selectivity of the capped AuNPs is directly related to the surface coverage of the ligands regardless the diverse chemical nature of these ligands (Figure 1d). This work highlights that the surface coverage of ligands should be considered to be an important factor accounting for metal-organic interfaces in addition to chemical nature of the ligand itself. Trace Thiol Moieties in the Ligand Layer Induce Superior Catalytic Gold Nanoclusters

Abstract:We here show that the typical poison of thiols, if below a certain level, promotes rather than suppresses the catalytic activity of gold nanoclusters (AuNCs). A few thiol groups functionalized hyperbranched polyethylenimine (PEI, Mn = 2000 Da) patched on a mesoporous polymeric bead aid the direct synthesis of AuNCs. The nucleation efficiency of AuNC is 93-fold favored at a level of 2 thiols per PEI (0.04 equiv of the amino units) than that by neat PEI, and AuNCs (1.3 nm) are obtained up to a gold load of 6.3% on the support. Unexpectedly, the catalytic activity of AuNCs is favored by the thiol up to 2 thiols per PEI, as evaluated from the surface-normalized rate constant of the model reaction of 4-nitrophenol-reduction. The catalytic promotion by thiols probably stems from optimized electron density on AuNC. If the residual NH groups of PEI were further fully treated with glycidyltrimethylammonium chloride, the catalytic activity is again enhanced, where the accelerated mass transfer is responsible for the promotion. Overall, the catalytic activity reaches an unprecedented value (metal-normalized rate constant kc = 29.4 L mmol-1 s-1 and turnover frequency = 1623 h-1, as evaluated with the model reaction of 4-nitrophenol reduction) ever reported for supported AuNCs. Our results suggest that orthogonal ligand optimization is an effective manner of triggering the release of the catalytic potential of AuNCs, among which thiol is unique.

Atomically Precise Preorganization of Open Metal Sites on Gold Nanoclusters with High Catalytic Performance

Abstract:Gold nanoclusters with surface open sites are crucial for practical applications in catalysis. We have developed a surface geometric mismatch strategy by using mixed ligands of different type of hindrance. When bulky phosphine Ph3 P and planar dipyridyl amine (Hdpa) are simultaneously used, steric repulsion between the ligands will reduce the ligand coverage of gold clusters. A well-defined access granted gold nanocluster [Au23 (Ph3 P)10 (dpa)2 Cl](SO3 CF3 )2 (Au23 , dpa=dipyridylamido) has been successfully synthesized. Single crystal structural determination reveals that Au23 has eight uncoordinated gold atoms in the shape of a distorted bicapped triangular prism. The accessibility of the exposed Au atoms has been confirmed quantitatively by luminescent titration with 2-naphthalenethiol. This cluster has excellent performance toward selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde and demonstrates excellent stability due to the protection of negatively charged multidentate ligand dpa.
The Precise Editing of Surface Sites on a Molecular-Like Gold Catalyst for Modulating Regioselectivity.

Abstract:It is extremely difficult to precisely edit a surface site on a typical nanoparticle catalyst without changing other parts of the catalyst. This precludes a full understanding of which site primarily determines the catalytic properties. Here, we couple experimental data collection with theoretical analysis to correlate rich structural information relating to atomically precise gold clusters with the catalytic performance for the click reaction of phenylacetylene and benzyl azide. We also identify a specific surface site that is capable of achieving high regioselectivity. We further conduct site-specific editing on a thiolate-protected gold cluster by peeling off two monomeric RS-Au-SR motifs and replacing them with two Ph2P-CH2-PPh2 staples. We demonstrate that the surface Au-Ph2P-CH2-PPh2-Au motifs enable extraordinary regioselectivity for the click reaction of alkyne and azide. The editing strategy for the surface motifs allows us to exploit previously inaccessible individual active sites and elucidate which site can explicitly govern the reaction outcome.

Abstract:The complexity of heterogeneous metal catalysts makes it challenging to gain insights into their catalytic mechanisms. Thus, there exists a huge gap between heterogeneous catalysis and organometallic catalysis. With the success in the preparation of highly robust atomically precise metal nanocluster catalysts (i.e., [Au16(NHC-1)5(PA)3Br2]3+ and [Au17(NHC-1)4(PA)4Br4]+, where NHC-1 is a bidentate NHC ligand, and PA is phenylacetylide) with surface organometallic motifs anchored on the metallic core, we demonstrate in this work how the metallic core works synergistically with the surface organometallic motifs to enhance the catalysis. More importantly, the discovery allows the development of highly stable and recyclable heterogeneous metal catalysts to achieve efficient hydroamination of alkynes with an extremely low catalyst dosage (0.002 mol %), helping bridge the gap between heterogeneous and homogeneous metal catalysis. The surface modification of metal nanocatalysts with organometallic motifs provides a new design principle of metal catalysts with enhanced catalysis.

Abstract:Constructing the structure and composition of active sites of catalysts to discriminate between reaction molecules remains a grand challenge in heterogeneous catalysis, as the ability to precisely control the interfacial chemistry within molecular-scale environments is largely lacking. Here, we recognize the reaction sites of thiolate-ligand protected gold nanoclusters for CO2 electroreduction (CO2RR) by cleaving the Au-S or C-S bonds selectively that can be controlled by Cd doping. Our study reveals that the C-S bond cleavage occurring on partial ligands leads to the creation of open S sites that are able to readily bind the CO2 molecule and catalyze its reduction, while the breaking of Au-S bonds creates exposed metal sites to favor H-2 evolution that is considered as the main complete reaction of CO2RR. We further tailor the reactivities of these two types of reaction sites by only the ligand derivatization, which holds great promise in rational design of high-performance catalysts.

Abstract:A facile and eco-friendly approach is developed for the fabrication of highly dispersed gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) immobilized on a thermo-responsive tannin-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (TA-APTES)-coated halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) and the application as a “smart” catalyst in the thermally tunable catalysis. By simply controlling the reaction conditions, the green and versatile TA-APTES coating was assembled onto the HNTs (HTA) with a controllable thickness, and subsequently the thermo-responsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) was grafted onto HTA (HTA-P) through a Michael addition reaction. Owing to the adhesive ability, metal ion affinity, and reducibility of TA-APTES coating, Au nanoparticles can be in situ immobilized and homogenously dispersed on both HTA and HTA-P without the assistance of any reducing agent and stabilizing agent. The as-prepared Au/HTA and Au/HTA-P exhibited superior activities in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol, which were comparable to the famous polydopamine-coated counterpart. Notably, Au/HTA-P showed a significant thermo-responsive catalytic performance, where the highest catalytic efficiency was obtained at the lower critical solution temperature of 45 °C, demonstrating the crucial role of the thermo-responsive polymer on the thermally tunable catalysis. Finally, the Au/HTA and Au/HTA-P catalysts prepared in a simple and eco-friendly manner were stable in the successive catalytic cycles, showing great potentials in industrial catalytic applications.Graphic abstractEco-friendly tannin-aminopropyltriethoxysilane-coated halloysite nanotubes were served as multifunctional materials for the fabrication of highly active and thermo-responsive catalysts.

Abstract:Platinum is a widely used precious metal in many catalytic nanostructures. Engineering the surface electronic structure of Pt-containing bi- or multimetallic nanostructure to enhance both the intrinsic activity and dispersion of Pt has remained a challenge. By constructing Pt-on-Au (Pt^Au) nanostructures using a series of monodisperse Au nanoparticles in the size range of 2-14 nm, we disclose herein a new approach to steadily change both properties of Pt in electrocatalysis with downsizing of the Au nanoparticles. A combined tuning of Pt dispersion and its surface electronic structure is shown as a consequence of the changes in the size and valence-band structure of Au, which leads to significantly enhanced Pt mass-activity on the small Au nanoparticles. Fully dispersed Pt entities on the smallest Au nanoparticles (2 nm) exhibit the highest mass-activity to date towards formic acid electrooxidation, being 2 orders of magnitude (75-300 folds) higher than conventional Pt/C catalyst. Fundamental relationships correlating the Pt intrinsic activity in Pt^Au nanostructures with the experimentally determined surface electronic structures (d-band center energies) of the Pt entities and their underlying Au nanoparticles are established.
Morphology-selective synthesis of active and durable gold catalysts with high catalytic performance in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol

Abstract:A series of novel catalysts consisting of nanosized Au particles confined in micro-mesoporous ZSM-5/SBA-15 (ZSBA) materials with platelet (PL), rod (RD), and hexagonal-prism (HP) morphologies have been synthesized in situ. These catalysts possess both SBA-15 and ZSM-5 structures and exhibit excellent stability of their active sites by confinement of the Au nanoparticles (NPs) within ZSBA. The catalysts have been characterized in depth to understand their structure–property relationships. The gold NP dimensions and the pore structure of the catalysts, which were found to be sensitive to calcination temperature and synthetic conditions, are shown to play vital roles in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol. Au/ZSBA-PL, with short mesochannels (210 nm) and a large pore diameter (6.7 nm), exhibits high catalytic performance in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol, whereas Au/ZSBA-HP and Au/ZSBA-RD, with long mesochannels and relatively smaller pore sizes, show poor catalytic activities. In the case of catalysts with different gold NP sizes, Au/ZSBA-PL-350 with an Au NP diameter of 4.0 nm exhibits the highest reaction rate constant (0.14 min-1) and turnover frequency (0.0341 s-1). In addition, the effect of the reaction parameters on the reduction of 4-nitrophenol has been systematically investigated. A possible mechanism for 4-nitrophenol reduction over the Au/ZSBA catalysts is proposed.

Abstract:Single nanoporous gold nanowire was introduced as a tunable one-dimensional nano-sensor platform with both SERS and catalytic activity, and it precisely fit the requirement of materials for in situ SERS monitoring of plasmon-assisted catalytic reaction. The nanoporous gold nanowires exhibited much more "hot spots" on their surface and much better SPR effect than the smooth nanowires. We demonstrated that these nanowires could be used as a SERS substrate assuring the sensitivity and reproducibility of Raman signals. Besides, they could be applied as a kind of heterogeneous catalyst for in situ SERS monitoring of the plasmon-assisted catalytic reaction-reduction of p-nitrothiophenol (p-NTP) to p,p-dimercaptoazobenzene (DMAB) at their surface. The SERS and catalytic activity of the nanowires could be respectively optimized by adjusting their dealloying time, similar to the procedure of catalyst screening.
Kernels‐Different Au25 Nanoclusters Enhanced Catalytic Performance via Modification of Ligand and Electronic Effects

Abstract:Comprehensive Summary Ultrasmall atomically precise thiolate‐protected gold nanoclusters with surface open sites are crucial for practical applications in catalysis. However, there is a lack of systematic studies that unify the kernels‐isomerization, modification of peripheral ligands and electronic effects into one system, as well as their correlation to catalytic performances. In this work, three structurally related Au25 nanoclusters with reported star Au25 kernels, Au25‐i‐FTP, Au25‐bi‐FTP, and Au25‐bi‐CHT have been synthesized through two different methods: one‐pot direct reduction and two‐step reduction by using AsPh3 as converter. Their structures and catalytic performance have been comparatively investigated. Au25‐i‐FTP has a classic Au13 core capped by six dimeric RS‐Au‐SR‐Au‐SRs, while Au25‐bi‐FTP and Au25‐bi‐CHT feature typical rod‐shaped biicosahedral geometric kernel. All of the three Au25 clusters were effective catalysts for oxidation of organosilanes, different from conclusions obtained in literature. Especially, the nanorod‐type Au25‐bi‐CHT clusters protected by flexible thiol ligands showed very good catalytic performance in this reaction, the conversion and selectivity were close to 100% within 5 minutes. The ligand rigidity and electron effects work together to modulate the catalytic properties. The findings inspire us to rethink kernel and ligand effects on catalytic property, the principle demonstrated here will possibly be widely‐used in high active atom‐precise catalysts modification. Abstract:Catalytic performance of a bimetallic catalyst is determined by geometric structure and electronic state of the surface or even the near-surface region of the catalyst. Here we report that single and sequential postsynthesis reactions of an as-synthesized bimetallic nanoparticle catalyst in one or more gas phases can tailor surface chemistry and structure of the catalyst in a gas phase, by which catalytic performance of this bimetallic catalyst can be tuned. Pt Cu regular nanocube (Pt-Cu ANC) and concave nanocube (Pt-Cu CNC) are chosen as models of bimetallic catalysts. Surface chemistry and catalyst structure under different reaction conditions and during catalysis were explored in gas phase of one or two reactants with ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (AP-XPS) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. The newly formed surface structures of Pt Cu ANC and Pt Cu CNC catalysts strongly depend on the reactive gas(es) used in the postsynthesis reaction(s). A reaction of Pt-Cu RNC-as synthesized with H-2 at 200 degrees C generates a near-surface alloy consisting of a Pt skin layer, a Cu-rich subsurface, and a Pt-rich deep layer. This near-surface alloy of Pt Cu RNC-as synthesized-H-2 exhibits a much higher catalytic activity in CO oxidation in terms of a low activation barrier of 39 +/- 4 kJ/mol in contrast to 128 +/- 7 kJ/mol of Pt-Cu ANC-as synthesized. Here the significant decrease of activation barrier demonstrates a method to tune catalytic performances of as-synthesized bimetallic catalysts. A further reaction of Pt Cu ANC-as synthesized-H-2 with CO forms a Pt-Cu alloy surface, which exhibits quite different catalytic performance in CO oxidation. It suggests the capability of generating a different surface by using another gas. The capability of tuning surface chemistry and structure of bimetallic catalysts was also demonstrated in restructuring of Pt-Cu CNC-as synthesized.
Molecular Manipulation of Microenvironment of Au Active Sites on Mesoporous Silica for Enhanced Catalytic Reduction of 4-Nitrophenol

Abstract:At the confined nanospace and/or nanoscale interface, the catalytic nature of active sites on the molecule level still remains elusive. Herein, with the catalytic hydride reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) over gold nanoparticles (NPs) catalysts as a prototype reaction, the influence of delicate change of microenvironment of catalytic active site on the reaction kinetics of 4-NP to 4-aminophenol (4-AP) with the introduction of varied alkali-metal ion (AM + ) salt, have been deeply investigated. We demonstrate that structural water (SW) adsorbed on Au NPs in the form of {OH - ·H 2 O@Au NPs} is the real catalytic active sites (not alone Au NPs), and in the presence of lithium chloride (LiCl), it shows the best catalytic performance. In addition, the isotope labeling and kinetic isotope effect (KIE) experiments evidences that, the reduction of 4-NP does not follow the classical Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) bimolecular mechanism, but an interfacial SW dominated electron and proton transfer mechanism. The proposed mechanism answers why the dissociation of O-H bond of water is the rate-determining step (RDS) of 4-NP reduction, and, counter-intuitively, the solvent water is the hydrogen source of final product 4-AP, instead of sodium borohydride (NaBH 4 ) reducer. Importantly, the co-existence of Li + and Cl - ions synergistically stabilizes the transition state of reaction and accelerates the interfacial electron and proton transfer, consequently enhancing the reaction kinetics. The model of structural water as a bridge to transfer electron and proton at nanoscale interface is the reminiscent of working mechanism of photosystem two (PSII) for water splitting on Mn 4 CaO 5 cluster.

Abstract:Controlling nanoparticle (NP) surface strain, i.e. compression (or stretch) of surface atoms, is an important approach to tune NP surface chemistry and to optimize NP catalysis for chemical reactions. Here we show that surface Pt strain in the core/shell FePt/Pt NPs with Pt in three atomic layers can be rationally tuned via core structural transition from cubic solid solution [denoted as face centered cubic (fcc)] structure to tetragonal intermetallic [denoted as face centered tetragonal (fct)] structure. The high activity observed from the fct-FePt/Pt NPs for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is due to the release of the overcompressed Pt strain by the fct-FePt as suggested by quantum mechanics-molecular mechanics (QM-MM) simulations. The Pt strain effect on ORR can be further optimized when Fe in FePt is partially replaced by Cu. As a result, the fct-FeCuPt/Pt NPs become the most efficient catalyst for ORR and are nearly 10 times more active in specific activity than the commercial Pt catalyst. This structure-induced surface strain control opens up a new path to tune and optimize NP catalysis for ORR and many other chemical reactions.
Small gold nanoparticles for tandem cyclization/reduction and cyclization/hydroalkoxylation reactions

Abstract:With peculiar structural features at the surface of small metal nanoparticles, some discrete sites can display catalytic behaviour similar to what could be observed with mononuclear metal catalysts in solution. We have studied the transfer of two catalytic tandem reactions from homogeneous to heterogeneous conditions. Tandem cyclisation/reduction of ortho -alkynyl benzaldehyde derivatives was successfully achieved with Au nanoparticles over TiO 2 (Au NPs/TiO 2 ) in the presence of Hantzsch ester with 45-98% yields for 15 examples (average yield: 70.4%). Similarly, tandem cyclisation/hydroalkoxylation of ortho -alkynyl benzaldehyde derivatives was successfully achieved with Au NPs/TiO 2 in methanol or other alcohols with 62-96% yields for 17 examples (average yield: 84.9%). The application potential of this catalytic system was demonstrated with the total synthesis of a bioactive isochromene derivative featuring one of the developed reactions as the key step and the implementation of the tandem cyclisation/hydroalkoxylation in a continuous flow reactor, scaling up the reaction by a factor of 10 without loss of efficiency.

Abstract:Metal nanoclusters whose surface ligands are removable while keeping their metal framework structures intact are an ideal system for investigating the influence of surface ligands on catalysis of metal nanoparticles. We report in this work an intermetallic nanocluster containing 62 metal atoms, Au34Ag28(PhC= C)(34), and its use as a model catalyst to explore the importance of surface ligands in promoting catalysis. As revealed by single-crystal diffraction, the 62 metal atoms in the cluster are arranged as a four-concentric-shell Ag@ Au-17@Ag-27@Au-17 structure. All phenylalkynyl (PA) ligands are linearly coordinated to the surface Au atoms with staple "Phe C-Au-C CPh" motif. Compared with reported thiolated metal nanoclusters, the surface PA ligands on Au34Ag28(PhC C)(34) are readily removed at relatively low temperatures, while the metal core remains intact. The clusters before and after removal of surface ligands are used as catalysts for the hydrolytic oxidation of organosilanes to silanols. It is, for the first time, demonstrated that the organic-capped metal nanoclusters work as active catalysts much better than those with surface ligands partially or completely removed.
