Abstract:The existence of antibiotics in aquatic streams destroys water quality and thereby poses serious ecological hitches. Photocatalysis involving nanosemiconductors is an environmentally benign technique for the mineralization of antibiotics. Herein, we prepared a new visible light-sensitive photocatalyst, zeolite Y-supported carbon-doped TiO2 nanocomposite (zeolite Y-c-TiO2), for the elimination of cefazolin antibiotic in wastewater systems. The structural and optical properties of the synthesized nanocomposites were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), powder X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area analysis (BET) as well as diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-DRS) and photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL). The UV-Vis absorbance spectrum of zeolite Y-c-TiO2 exhibited a red shift towards longer wavelength with an increase in visible light absorption as compared to pure TiO2 nanoparticles and zeolite Y-supported TiO2 nanocomposites (zeolite Y-TiO2). Accordingly, the photocatalytic action of the zeolite Y-c-TiO2 for the degradation of methylene blue was evaluated under solar simulator, and it turned out to be highly efficient (100%) mineralization as compared to TiO2-nanoparticles (42%) and zeolite Y-TiO2 (62%) after 70 min irradiation for a 50mg L-1 methylene blue solution. Radical scavenging experiments revealed the involvement of hydroxyl radicals, superoxide radicals, and photogenerated holes in the degradation process. Consequently, zeolite Y-c-TiO2 was applied for the photocatalytic degradation of the cefazolin antibiotic in water, and complete degradation of cefazolin (50 mg L-1) was observed within 6 h of solar light irradiation on zeolite Y-c-TiO2. The degradation pathway of cefazolin was proposed by considering various intermediates detected via LC-MS analysis. The study points to the significant potential of zeolite Y-c-TiO2 photocatalyst for the purification of medicinal wastewater under sunlight.
Preparation of Ce0.9Zr0.1O2/SnIn4S8 composite photocatalyst and its degradation of typical antibiotic pollutants

Abstract:Considering the high environmental risk, the remediation of antibiotic pollutants attracted numerous attentions. In this work, a novel photocatalyst, Ce0.9Zr0.1O2/SnIn4S8, was fabricated by in situ precipitation and hydrothermal method and then applied to the degradation of norfloxacin under the irritation of visible light. The SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS, and electrochemical results clearly showed that the n-type heterojunction between Ce0.9Zr0.1O2 and SnIn4S8 was successfully constructed, which greatly reduces the recombination of the photogenic electron and holes, leading to the improvement of photocatalytic performance and stability (recycled over eight times). Besides, the Ce0.9Zr0.1O2/SnIn4S8 composite also exhibited good ability to mineralize norfloxacin. Under the optimal condition (pH 3, 1 g L−1 of 10% Ce0.9Zr0.1O2/SnIn4S8, and 8 mg L−1 of initial norfloxacin concentration), norfloxacin could be fully and rapidly degraded in 60 min, and completely mineralized in 4 h (99.3 ± 1.7%). LC-QTOF-MS results evidently displayed eight intermediates during norfloxacin degradation. In addition, with the attack of the reactive oxygen species (h+, •OH, and •O2−), norfloxacin could be effectively decomposed via deoxygenation, hydroxylation, and carboxylation reactions. Notably, compared to photodegradation, the photocatalytic process could completely eliminate the norfloxacin from water because it could avoid the accumulation of toxic byproducts.

Abstract:The presence of pharmaceutical pollutants in the environment has become a growing concern due to their persistence and toxic nature. In response to this issue, semiconductor photocatalyst materials have emerged as promising candidates for environmental pollutant removal, particularly under solar light irradiation. In this study, we developed a novel zeolite/Fe3O4/CuS/CuWO4 heterojunction nanocomposite through a simple and facile method. The fabrication process involved a multistep approach wherein Fe3O4, CuS, and CuWO4 were incorporated onto the surface of pure zeolite nanoparticles. X‐ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared, photoluminescence, and vibrating sample magnetometry were analyzed. The results demonstrated that the zeolite/Fe3O4/CuS/CuWO4 heterojunction nanocomposite exhibited a synergistic integration of excellent properties, indicative of the successful construction of a heterostructure within the nanocomposite. Furthermore, the photocatalytic efficiency of the nanocomposite was evaluated for the degradation of the pharmaceutical pollutant fluoroquinolone levofloxacin (LEVO), and it outperformed individual photocatalysts. Notably, the zeolite/Fe3O4/CuS/CuWO4 nanocomposite achieved an impressive degradation rate of approximately 82.67% of LEVO after 120 min of exposure. Importantly, the synthesized nanocomposite demonstrated excellent reusability, with a photodegradation efficiency of 60.45% after the fifth cycle of LEVO degradation, as there was no significant loss in photocatalytic activity over repeated cycles. Furthermore the highest total organic carbon removal efficiency estimated is 57.43% for heterojunction nanocomposite. These findings highlight the potential of the zeolite/Fe3O4/CuS/CuWO4 heterojunction nanocomposite as an effective, eco‐friendly photocatalyst for pharmaceutical pollutant removal from the environment.

Abstract:The excellent photo-response of ZnFe 2 O 4 in the visible light region makes it a promising catalyst, whereas some defects like serious particle agglomeration and easy recombination of photo-generated electron-hole pairs hinder its application. In this work, the ZnFe 2 O 4 /sepiolite (ZF-Sep) composites were synthesized using a co-precipitation method. The obtained ZF-Sep composites were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, FT-IR, XPS, BET, VSM and DRS. Moreover, the photocatalytic performance was evaluated by the tetracycline hydrochloride removal efficiency under simulated visible light illumination. The results displayed that the ZnFe 2 O 4 with average sizes about 20 nm were highly dispersed on sepiolite nanofibers. All the composites exhibited better photocatalytic performance than pure ZnFe 2 O 4 due to the synergistic effect of the improvement on the agglomeration phenomenon of ZnFe 2 O 4 and the reduction on the recombination rate of photo-generated electrons and holes. The optimum removal efficiency was that of the ZF-Sep-11 composite, which reached 93.6% within 3 h. Besides, the composite exhibited an excellent stability and reusability. Therefore, ZF-Sep composite is a promising catalyst for the treatment of wastewater contained antibiotics.

Abstract:In this study, both CuO nanoparticles and ZnO nanorods were anchored on thermally-exfoliated g-C3N4 nanosheets (denoted as ) via isoelectric point-mediated annealing process as a novel nano-photocatalyst towards degradation of amoxicillin (AMOX). The features of prepared materials were characterized using BET, UV–vis DRS, XRD, FT-IR, XPS, FE-SEM, TEM, EIS and transient photocurrent techniques. These analyses demonstrated the successful formation of heterojunctions between components of nanocomposite, which reflected in significantly increased electron-hole separation and enhanced degradation of AMOX as compared with pure substances. The investigation of influential operative parameters confirmed that the complete removal of AMOX could be attained under catalytic dosage of 0.9 g L−1 and pH of 7.0 within 120 min simulated sunlight illumination. Generation of OH upon illumination of catalysts was verified by terephthalic acid photoluminescence (TPA-PL) spectroscopy. Also, trapping tests proved that OH and O2− were the major reactive radicals in AMOX decontamination. A novel double Z-scheme mechanism as well as a tentative pathway for fractionation of AMOX by photocatalytic system were proposed in details. Only a marginal decrease in photocatalytic activity occurred after 5 consecutive tests. In an attempt to study the industrial applicability of catalyst, more than 79 % COD and 63 % TOC were eliminated under optimum conditions during 120 min illumination and the biodegradability of treated wastewater was also improved.
Construction of Z-scheme Cu-CeO2/BiOBr Heterojunction for Enhanced Photocatalytic Degradation of Sulfathiazole

Abstract:The utilization of an efficient photocatalyst is crucial for the photocatalytic degradation of antibiotics in water through visible light, which is an imperative requirement for the remediation of water environments. In this study, a novel Cu-CeO2/BiOBr Z-type heterojunction was synthesized by calcination and hydrothermal methods, and the degradation rate of sulfathiazole (STZ) antibiotic solution was studied using simulated illumination (300W xenon lamp). The results indicated that 3% Cu-CeO2/BiOBr achieved a degradation rate of 92.3% within 90 minutes when treating 20 mg/L STZ solution, demonstrating its potential for practical water treatment applications. Characterization using various chemical instruments revealed that 3% Cu-CeO2/BiOBr exhibited the lowest electron-hole recombination rate and electron transfer resistance. Furthermore, the utilization of ESR data and quenching experiments has substantiated the involvement of hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and superoxide radicals (•O2−) as the primary active species. Consequently, a plausible degradation mechanism has been inferred. These findings offer a prospective approach for the development of heterojunction materials with appropriate band matching.

Abstract:Despite the exceptional capability of photocatalytic systems, the development of highly-oxidative materials for the decontamination of tenacious pollutants is still vacant. The brilliance oxidation potential of tin-oxide which is much higher than that of TiO 2 together with its astounding stability in harsh oxidative reactions introduces a prospective candidate. However, the insufficient photoactivation of tin-oxide resulting from its wide bandgap energy prevented from the full exploitation of its intrinsic capability. Herein, the metal-glycerate-assisted metal–organic framework engineered yolk-shelled copper-doped SnO 2 (YS-(5)CSO) hollow spheres. The multi-level hollow spheres not only benefit from vase surface area, but also take the advantages of trapping photons by multi-reflation/scattering effect and effective charge dissociation by minimized ion diffusion path. The well-coordination of the dopant element in SnO 2 lattice induced enormous mid-gap defects to construct a visible-light-driven SnO 2 . Moreover, the exterior shell of as-synthesized YS-(5)CSO was amalgamated with the MnCo 2 O 4 nanoparticles (Np-MCO@YS-(5)CSO) to construct S-scheme heterojunction. Under optimized operational conditions, the promising capability of Np-MCO@YS-(5)CSO was realized in total photodegradation of levofloxacin (LFC) (60 mg/L), which was 31.2 and 5.3 times kinetically greater than that of the pristine Np-MCO and YS-(5)CSO, respectively. Additionally, the engineered photocatalytic system presented exceptional capability in the decontamination of real pharmaceutical effluent under visible-light irradiation. In the term of stability matter, the photocatalytic performance of as-synthesized Np-MCO@YS-(5)CSO preserved under six successive cycling runs. The elemental leaching and post-characterization analyses after reusability tests revealed the high stability of Np-MCO@YS-(5)CSO nanocomposite, which endured during long-runs and vicious oxidative reactions without any failure. Generally, the combination of simultaneous Z-scheme heterojunction with the electronic modification of doping strategy bridges the gap between experimental investigations and industrial photocatalyst application.

Abstract:The removal and the treatment of antibiotics in environmental water by advanced oxidation process (AOP) has attracted much attention. In this paper, a metal-free graphitized carbon nitride nanosheets (g-C 3 N 4 -NS) was synthesized by gas template method. Cefixime in water was removed by direct photocatalysis and activation of persulfate (PS) under simulated sunlight. The flaky morphology made g-C 3 N 4 -NS's band gap narrow, charge separation enhanced, light absorption enhanced, and more active sites were exposed. The specific surface area of g-C 3 N 4 -NS was about 6 times than that of bulk g-C 3 N 4 , and its photocurrent was about 3 times. The effects of different PS concentrations and pH values on photocatalytic activation in two ways were studied. The influence of anions on the removal of cefixime was also studied. The synthesized g-C 3 N 4 -NS has good stability, and its performance is well maintained after continuous photocatalysis and photoactivation catalysis. The degradation rate of cefixime by g-C 3 N 4 -NS was three times than that of bulk g-C 3 N 4 , and the removal rate of cefixime by g-C 3 N 4 -NS /PS system was 30 times than that of PS. This work provides advanced idea for metal-free AOP in environmental chemistry.

Efficient photocatalytic degradation of metronidazole in wastewater under simulated sunlight using surfactant- and CuS-activated zeolite nanoparticles

Abstract:Hexadecyltrimethylammonium-bromide-activated zeolite nanoparticles coated with copper sulfide (ZEO/HDTMA-Br/CuS) was evaluated as a photocatalyst under sunlight for the degradation of metronidazole (MET). The surface and structural characteristics of ZEO/HDTMA-Br/CuS and other materials used in this study were analyzed using field emission-scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared and ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopies, X-ray diffraction, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area and Barrett-Joyner-Halenda pore size and volume analyses, and pH of zero charge test. ZEO/HDTMA-Br/CuS exhibited excellent surface and structural catalytic properties. For a comprehensive study of the degradation process, several parameters, such as the pH (3-11), MET concentration (10-30 mg/L), ZEO/HDTMA-Br/CuS dose (0.005-0.1 g/L), reaction time (5-200 min), and H2O2 concentration (50-200 mg/L), were optimized. ZEO/HDTMA-Br/CuS achieved 100% degradation efficiency when 10 mg/L MET was used under the optimum conditions: pH = 7, ZEO/HDTMA-Br/CuS dose = 0.01 g/L, and reaction time = 180 min. The degradation efficiency increased when the concentration of H2O2 was increased from 50 to 150 mg/L and decreased with further increase to 200 mg/L, indicating that the efficiency of MET degradation highly depends on the concentration of H2O2 in an aqueous solution. The degradation kinetics analysis revealed that the degradation is of the pseudo first-order. Thus, ZEO/HDTMA-Br/CuS proved to be an exceptional catalyst for the photodegradation of MET in aqueous media.
Construction of direct Z-scheme SnS2@ZnIn2S4@kaolinite heterostructure photocatalyst for efficient photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride

Abstract:The accumulation of antibiotics in water system and the consequent detrimental effects have drawn worldwide attention extensively. There is an urgent need to develop rapid and efficient degradation methods of antibiotics. In this work, a highly efficient SnS2@ZnIn2S4@kaolinite (SZK) photocatalysts were successfully synthesized by hydrothermal method. In comparison with bare photocatalysts, the SnS2@ZnIn2S4@kaolinite (SZK) heterostructure demonstrated greatly improved adsorption-photocatalytic degradation capability for removal of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH). Under visible light illumination, the apparent reaction rate of SZK heterostructure reached 0.0231 min−1, which was around 20.81 times and 2.37 times higher than that of SnS2 and ZnIn2S4, respectively. It has been proved that •O2 − and 1O2 are the main active species participating the degradation process. Based on HPLC-MS analysis, the possible photodegradation pathways of TCH have been proposed. The superior removal performance is mainly ascribed to the enhanced adsorption ability, elevated light harvesting and the increased separation efficiency originated from the synergistic effect of the components. Our study provides new insights with the utilization of natural minerals for visible light photocatalytic degradation of antibiotics in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:In this study, ZnO2 nanoparticles and neoteric ZnO2-SnO2 composite have been successfully prepared for the investigation of photocatalytic degradation of dye and pharmaceutical contaminants. Various characterization techniques were employed to analyse the as-prepared photocatalysts. The degradation involves the irradiation of light on materials, resulting in generation of charge carriers pairs (e─- h+), which react with O2, H2O to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) viz •O2─, •OH, that decontaminate pollutants. The photocatalytic activity of as-prepared catalysts was tested for degradation of Rhodamine B (Rh B) dye and pharmaceutical antibiotic Moxifloxacin (MOX). The results indicate that new composite-catalyst outperforms ZnO2 in degradation of Rh B and MOX, which can be attributed to better separation and transfer of photoexcited charge carriers and thereby achieving degradation percentages of 96.4% in 30 minutes for Rh B and 95.1% in 20 minutes for MOX after irradiation of UV light. However, under natural sunlight degradation percentages of Rh B and MOX are 96.2% in 105 minutes and 77.5% in 90 minutes respectively. The degradation rates of composite-catalyst are found to be 2.3 and 4.75 times higher than that of ZnO2 for Rh B and MOX respectively. Furthermore, scavenging activity was performed which reveals that •OH radicals predominantly contribute to degradation of contaminants. The Rh B degradation pathway was studied by HR-MS technique and toxicity assessment was done using ECOSAR software. More importantly, present study highlights the performance of the catalyst ZnO2-SnO2 which is reported for the first time.

Accelerated Photocatalytic Degradation of Sulfamethoxazole and Cefixime: A Comprehensive Study of Biotoxicity, Degradation Kinetics and Pathway

Abstract:This study aimed to accelerate photocatalytic treatment of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and cefixime (CFM) and alleviate the toxicity of photocatalysis effluents to improve further biodegradability. An efficient and fast reactive photocatalyst (Fe 2 O 3 /ZnO@VC) was synthesized, characterized and applied for photocatalytic removal of the targeted compounds. Results further confirmed the complete removal of SMX (1 mgL -1 ) within 30-min photocatalytic treatment. Acidic condition favored SMX removal due to the formation of negative ions, which were attracted by the surface of the catalyst comprising positive charge in pH values below the point of zero charge. The ideal degradation environment for CFM (1 mgL -1 ) was at neutral pH, and 97.2±0.1% of CFM was degraded over 60-min. A quenching test revealed that superoxide radial ( • O 2 − ) and e − played a major role in the photocatalytic degradation of SMX, while hydroxyl radical ( • OH) showed an identical effect during photocatalytic treatment of CFM. The degradation efficiency of SMX was marginally reduced in synthetic wastewater (SWW) and CFM in tap water (TW) due to the quenching effects of phosphates and carbonates anions in SWW and chloride ions in TW, respectively. As a result of the excellent mineralization properties of the photocatalyst, the photocatalysis effluents were highly detoxified, reaching 93.5±11.8% and 87.0±5.1% for SMX and CFM, respectively.

Abstract:Photocatalytic degradation processes are promising solutions for the effective removal of organic pollutants. This study reports the design and fabrication of MoO3-CoMn2O4-Cu2BaSnS4 QDs by ultrasonication assisted co-precipitation method for degradation of divergent pharmaceutical compounds. The nanocomposite (NC) was optimally synthesized, among which MoO3-CoMn2O4-Cu2BaSnS4-1% exhibited superior catalytic activity with the largest rate constant against cefixime (k = 0.0032 min−1) and carvedilol (k = 0.0025 min−1) under visible light irradiation. Furthermore, the photocatalytic experiments were carried out with varying operational parameters including different nanoparticle concentration, drug concentration, pH and ions, and their influence in the photodegradation of cefixime and carvedilol was studied. Notably, the nanomaterial exhibited an admirable photocatalytic stability and structural integrity after six consequent cycle tests, which was verified with XPS. Furthermore, the extended photo response window of the NCs has been discussed and the dominant active radical species was found to be ⋅OH and O2⋅-, which contributed to the photodegradation of cefixime and carvedilol. The mechanism of degradation of these compounds was investigated and with the intermediates obtained from GC–MS analysis, a corresponding pathway was also suggested. This study offers a detailed insight to design effective photocatalyst by integrating the properties of individual nanoparticles and troubleshooting the shortcomings.

Synergistic photocatalytic removal of moxifloxacin from aqueous solutions using ZnO-Fe3O4-chitosan composites

Abstract:The escalating contamination of water bodies with antibiotic residues is an urgent environmental and public health issue. This study aimed to fabricate an innovative photocatalytic composite (CMZ) by combining chitosan, magnetic iron oxide (Fe3O4), and zinc oxide (ZnO) for efficiently removing antibiotic moxifloxacin (MFX) water. Comprehensive characterization of the fabricated CMZ was performed using various techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV–Vis DRS), photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL) and nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherm analysis. The synergistic incorporation of ZnO, Fe3O4, and chitosan in the CMZ composite altered the structural properties of ZnO and chitosan The band gap energy of CMZ was 2.58 eV, significantly boosting its photocatalytic effectiveness under visible light exposure. The CMZ composites exhibited a high efficiency in catalyzing MFX degradation in aqueous environments. The optimal conditions for MFX degradation were established, including a neutral pH level of 7, a 90-minute exposure to irradiation, and employing 0.1 g of the CMZ catalyst. The degradation process obeyed closely to the first-order kinetic model. The CMZ material showed consistently high performance in degrading MFX across four consecutive reuse cycles, emphasizing its practical applicability for mitigating antibiotic pollution.

Efficiency of CaZn2(OH)6·2H2O and ZnO nanoparticles in photocatalytic degradation of amoxicillin after multiple cycles

Abstract:The widespread use of antibiotics has increased their presence in wastewater, largely due to inadequate removal by conventional treatment methods. This highlights a critical need for effective degradation strategies to mitigate environmental and public health risks. This study reports the photocatalytic degradation of amoxicillin (AMX) using calcium zinc hydroxide dihydrate [CaZn 2 (OH) 6 · 2H 2 O] (CZ) and zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles (NPs) synthesized by different routes. X-ray diffraction results confirmed the formation of CZ NPs with an 81 to 95% crystalline phase, while ZnO NPs present a single crystalline phase. The photolysis of AMX under UV-A light (365 nm) was strongly pH-dependent, with degradation rates of 34.7%, 5.7%, and 4.2% observed at pH 3, 5, and 13, respectively. Maximum adsorption occurred at pH 3, with ZnO achieving 63% to 83.2% AMX removal and 23.5% to 47.1% in the case of CZ. The highest overall AMX removal was observed at pH 3, where adsorption dominated the photocatalytic process for both CZ and ZnO. At pH 5 and 13, degradation was primarily driven by photocatalysis in CZ materials, particularly CZ-HT and CZ-SG, while adsorption remained predominant in ZnO. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance analysis indicates benzene ring cleavage in AMX photodegraded by CZ materials. Furthermore, the residues of photodegraded AMX by CZ materials lost antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Additionally, the reuse of NPs over four cycles maintained consistent degradation performance, highlighting their potential for repeated applications. The comparative analysis of CZ and ZnO NPs demonstrates the superior photocatalytic efficiency of CZ in degrading AMX. This efficiency, along with its potential for repeated use, establish CZ as a promising material for environmental applications aimed at reducing antibiotic contamination and the associated risks of resistance development.

Plant-based green fabrication of CuO-CdO-bentonite S-scheme heterojunction with enhanced photocatalytic performance for the degradation of levofloxacin

Abstract:In this research, for the first time, CuO and CdO nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized using Ferula persica and anchored on layered bentonite as a novel S-scheme nano-heterojunction (denoted as CuO-CdO-BT). Ferula persica acted as a naturally-sourced reducing agent and stabilizer for the synthesis of NPs. The performance of CuO-CdO-BT was evaluated for the degradation of levofloxacin from an aqueous solution under sunlight. The characterization results clarified that the bentonite as a support not only reduced the agglomeration of CuO and CdO NPs but also decreased the size of biosynthesized NPs, which increased the active surface of NPs and the photodegardation efficiency. The effect of operational reaction system variables was examined to optimize the photocatalytic capability of CuO-CdO-BT. Under optimum conditions (catalyst dosage = 0.4 g/L, LVF concentration = 10 mg/L and pH = 8), 96.11% of levofloxacin was degraded using CuO-CdO-BT after 30 min with degradation kinetic of 0.108 min-1, which was about 2.4 and 4.2 times higher than those of bare CuO and CdO NPs, respectively. The improvement of the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of CuO-CdO-BT compared to CuO and CdO NPs was due to preventing the recombination of charge carriers in the S-scheme system. The radical quenching experiments ascertained the generation of [Formula: see text]·OH, and [Formula: see text] species in the CuO-CdO-BT system, indicating that ·OH radicals have a more prominent role than [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] in the photocatalytic reaction. The six possible levofloxacin pathways of LVF degradation were suggested based on HPLC-MS analysis. Over 88.5% LVF was removed using CuO-CdO-BT after three catalyst reuse cycles, indicating a cost-effectiveness potential of the biosynthesized photocatalyst reusability. Almost complete mineralization of LVF was obtained by the CuO-CdO-BT photocatalyst after 180 min of reaction. Based on findings, the S-scheme mechanism of photo-generated electron-hole pairs transfer in the CuO-CdO-BT system was found. The unique structural features of the new generation of S-scheme heterojunction and green synthesis of NPs using plants provide promising photocatalysts to improve wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Fabricating oxygen vacancies (Vo) is an effective approach to enhance photocatalytic performance, but its effect on the interfacial charge transfer pathway remains unelucidated to date. In this study, we used the simple aqueous solution method to create an oxygen-defected ZIF-8-derived CuS/ZnO (CZ) heterostructure, and various characterization techniques were used to investigate the prepared catalysts. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) were used to determine the surface defects caused by the CuS nanoparticles in the ZnO matrix generated from ZIF-8. The optimized CuS/ZnO (CZ-2) catalyst exhibited efficient photocatalytic performance by effectively increasing the charge separation rate of the photogenerated electrons. The photocatalytic performances of methylene orange (MO) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) using the CZ heterostructure were 99.76 % and 94.59 %, respectively, with the corresponding rate constants of 0.0695 and 0.0312 min−1 at 40 min. The electron spin resonance and scavenger tests have established that •O2 − is the primary oxidative radical species involved in photocatalytic activity. In addition, the density functional theory calculations were performed to determine the degradation mechanism of CIP, and the possible pathways of CIP degradation were investigated using liquid chromatography–mass spectroscopy. This study provides new insights into the development of metal–organic frameworks and metal sulfide-based heterostructures for environmental degradation applications.

Abstract:Antibiotics in water are a major pollutant that poses serious threats to ecosystems and human health, underscoring the urgent need for effective purification methods. Photocatalysis with semiconducting nanomaterials stands out as one of the most efficient and environmentally friendly advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for degrading harmful organic pollutants. Nitrogen-enriched graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 5 ), a versatile 2D nanomaterial, is recognized for its visible light-active properties, with several advantages for photocatalytic applications. However, its efficacy is often hindered by high charge recombination rates. Herein, wide bandgap nano zirconia was employed as a robust cocatalyst to enhance the photocatalytic performance of g-C 3 N 5 . The ZrO 2 /g-C 3 N 5 (ZC) composites were formed at different weight ratios (1:2, 1:1, 2:1) using a simple ultrasonication method. The successful formation of the composite was confirmed through various analyses, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), photoluminescence (PL), and ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-DRS). Notably, the 1:1 ZC composite achieved an impressive 94.2% degradation of ciprofloxacin under solar light for 90 min at pH 5, attributed to the synergistic interaction between the two catalysts. The composite facilitates a type II heterojunction, with superoxides and holes serving as key radicals in the degradation pathway, and the degradation rates followed pseudo-first-order kinetics. Moreover, the catalyst demonstrated remarkable stability over four cycles, confirmed by reusability tests and post-degradation analyses, which showed minimal changes in structure or morphology. This proposed composite represents a significant advancement in visible light-mediated ciprofloxacin degradation. By incorporating insulating nano zirconia into the g-C 3 N 5 matrix, photocatalytic efficacy was restrained. This approach effectively suppresses charge recombination, and promotes enhanced charge transport, paving the way for more efficient photocatalytic applications.

Abstract:The production and usage of antibiotics have been increasing rapidly with the improving quality of life and the rapid development of aquaculture, thus inducing the introduction of these antibiotics residues into the environment, increasing water pollution levels. Due to bioaccumulation, bacteriostatic activity, many of these threaten aquatic and terrestrial organisms. Here we prepared double-shelled ZnSnO3 hollow cubes for efficient photocatalytic degradation of antibiotic wastewater. The ZnSnO3, synthesized via co-precipitation, shows superior performance and stability compared to that prepared by hydrothermal and template-assisted methods. The prepared ZnSnO3 effectively photocatalyzed the degradation of not only ciprofloxacin and sulfamonomethoxine pharmaceutical wastewater, but also methylene blue, rhodamine B and methyl orange dye wastewater. The hollow structure facilitates the adsorption of dye molecules and provides a better platform for direct interaction between dye molecules and photocatalysts. Moreover, the antibacterial activity test for photocatalytic degradation effluent indicated that the biotoxicity of CIP toward Escherichia coli DH5a was eliminated after the ZnSnO3 photocatalysis under simulated irradiation. This study not only demonstrates an efficient photocatalyst, but also further indicates the effectiveness of photocatalytic technology in the treatment of antibiotic wastewater.
