Abstract:The Internet-of-Things vision of ubiquitous and pervasive computing gives rise to future smart irrigation systems comprising the physical and digital worlds. A smart irrigation ecosystem combined with Machine Learning can provide solutions that successfully solve the soil humidity sensing task in order to ensure optimal water usage. Existing solutions are based on data received from the power hungry/expensive sensors that are transmitting the sensed data over the wireless channel. Over time, the systems become difficult to maintain, especially in remote areas due to the battery replacement issues with a large number of devices. Therefore, a novel solution must provide an alternative, cost- and energy-effective device that has unique advantage over the existing solutions. This work explores the concept of a novel, low-power, LoRa-based, cost-effective system that achieves humidity sensing using Deep Learning techniques that can be employed to sense soil humidity with high accuracy simply by measuring the signal strength of the given underground beacon device.

Abstract:The low-frequency (LF) magnetoelectric (ME) antenna is promising for underground communication, especially in the Underground Internet of Things (UIoT). However, soil moisture and its variations significantly impact the data transmission rate and efficiency. Therefore, it is imperative to thoroughly investigate the communication characteristics of the ME antenna in soil environments with different humidity levels. This paper proposes a miniaturized LF ME antenna based on Terfenol-D/PZT/Terfenol-D layered structure. The proposed ME antenna can sense changes in the soil moisture without moving the wireless network sensor node while also enabling LF underground communication, which achieves soil moisture adaptive underground communication. It can operate continuously for an extended period under the set driving conditions (P in = 152 mW). This research illuminates the potential of a miniaturized LF ME antenna for enabling adaptive underground wireless communication for soil moisture monitoring, which is expected to provide a new solution idea for the UIoT communication.

Abstract:Technologies for environmental and agricultural monitoring are on the rise, however, there is a lack of small, low-power, and lowcost sensing devices in the industry. One of these monitoring tools is a soil moisture sensor. Soil moisture has significant effects on crop health and yield, but commercial monitors are very expensive, require manual use, or constant attention. This calls for a simple and low-cost solution based on novel technology. In this work, we introduce smol: Sensing Soil Moisture using LoRa, a low-cost system to measure soil moisture using received signal strength indicator (RSSI) and transmission power. It is compact and can be deployed in the field to collect data automatically with little manual intervention. Our design is enabled by the phenomenon that soil moisture attenuates wireless signals, so the signal strength between a transmitter-receiver pair decreases. We exploit this physical property to determine the variation in soil moisture. We designed and tested our measurement-based prototype in both indoor and outdoor environments. With proper regression calibration, we show soil moisture can be predicted using LoRa parameters.

Abstract:Soil moisture sensing is one of the most important components in smart agriculture. It plays a critical role in increasing crop yields and reducing water waste. However, existing commercial soil moisture sensors are either expensive or inaccurate, limiting their real-world deployment. In this paper, we utilize wide-area LoRa signals to sense soil moisture without a need of dedicated soil moisture sensors. Different from traditional usage of LoRa in smart agriculture which is only for sensor data transmission, we leverage LoRa signal itself as a powerful sensing tool. The key insight is that the dielectric permittivity of soil which is closely related to soil moisture can be obtained from phase readings of LoRa signals. Therefore, antennas of a LoRa node can be placed in the soil to capture signal phase readings for soil moisture measurements. Though promising, it is non-trivial to extract accurate phase information due to unsynchronization of LoRa transmitter and receiver. In this work, we propose to include a low-cost switch to equip the LoRa node with two antennas to address the issue. We develop a delicate chirp ratio approach to cancel out the phase offset caused by transceiver unsynchronization to extract accurate phase information. The proposed system design has multiple unique advantages including high accuracy, robustness against motion interference and large sensing range for large-scale deployment in smart agriculture. Experiments with commodity LoRa nodes show that our system can accurately estimate soil moisture at an average error of 3.1%, achieving a performance comparable to high-end commodity soil moisture sensors. Field studies show that the proposed system can accurately sense soil moisture even when the LoRa gateway is 100 m away from the LoRa node, enabling wide-area soil moisture sensing for the first time.

Abstract:Soil monitoring plays an essential role in agricultural systems. Rather than deploying sensors' antennas above the ground, burying them in the soil is an attractive way to retain a non-intrusive aboveground space. Low Power Wide-Area Network (LPWAN) has shown its long-distance and low-power features for aboveground Internet-of-Things (IoT) communication, presenting a potential of extending to underground cross-soil communication over a wide area, which however has not been investigated before. The variation of soil conditions brings significant signal polarization misalignment, degrading communication reliability. In this paper, we propose Demeter, a low-cost low-power programmable antenna design to keep reliable cross-soil communication automatically. First, we propose a hardware architecture to enable polarization adjustment on commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) single-RF-chain LoRa radio. Moreover, we develop a low-power programmable circuit to obtain polarization adjustment. We further design an energy-efficient heuristic calibration algorithm and an adaptive calibration scheduling method to keep signal polarization alignment automatically. We implement Demeter with a customized PCB circuit and COTS devices. Then, we evaluate its performance in various soil types and environmental conditions. The results show that Demeter can achieve up to 11.6 dB SNR gain indoors and 9.94 dB outdoors, 4× horizontal communication distance, at least 20 cm deeper underground deployment, and up to 82% energy consumption reduction per day compared with the standard LoRa.
Estimating Volumetric Water Content in Soil for IoUT Contexts by Exploiting RSSI-Based Augmented Sensors via Machine Learning

Abstract:This paper aims at proposing an augmented sensing method for estimating volumetric water content (VWC) in soil for Internet of Underground Things (IoUT) applications. The system exploits an IoUT sensor node embedding a low-cost, low-precision soil moisture sensor and a long-range wide-area network (LoRaWAN) transceiver sending relative measurements within LoRaWAN packets. The VWC estimation is achieved by means of machine learning (ML) algorithms combining the readings provided by the soil moisture sensor with the received signal strength indicator (RSSI) values measured at the LoRaWAN gateway side during broadcasting. A dataset containing such measurements was especially collected in the laboratory by burying the IoUT sensor node within a plastic case filled with sand, while several VWCs were artificially created by progressively adding water. The adopted ML algorithms are trained and tested using three different techniques for estimating VWC. Firstly, the low-cost, low-precision soil moisture sensor is calibrated by resorting to an ML model exploiting only its raw readings to estimate VWC. Secondly, a virtual VWC sensor is shown, where no real sensor readings are used because only LoRaWAN RSSIs are exploited. Lastly, an augmented VWC sensing method relying on the combination of RSSIs and soil moisture sensor readings is presented. The findings of this paper demonstrate that the augmented sensor outperforms both the virtual sensor and the calibrated real soil moisture sensor. The latter provides a root mean square error (RMSE) of 3.33%, a virtual sensor of 8.67%, and an augmented sensor of 1.84%, which improves down to 1.53% if filtered in post-processing.

Abstract:A smart sensor label based on the integration of ultra high frequency (UHF) radio frequency identification (RFID) technology and sensors is presented. The label is composed of a semi-active system that measures temperature, light, relative humidity and gravimetric water content (GWC) in the soil. The deployed system provides a simple, cost effective solution to monitor and control the growing of plants in modern agriculture and is intended be a part of a smart wireless sensor network (WSN) for agricultural monitoring. This paper is focused on analysis and development of a moisture sensor to measure GWC. It is based on a capacitance measurement solution, the accuracy of which is enhanced using several sensor driving frequencies. Thanks to the cancellation of supply voltage variations, the modeling of the GWC sensor and readout circuit was correct. The results we measured were close to modeled values. The maximum measurement resolution of the capacitive moisture sensor was 0.07 pF. To get the GWC from measured capacitance, a scale was used to weigh the mass of water in the soil. The comparison between capacitance measurement and calculated soil GWC is presented. The RFID measurement system has energy harvesting capabilities and an ultra-low power microcontroller, which uses embedded software to control the measurement properties. The microcontroller has to choose the appropriate model depending on the measured amplitude and chosen frequency to calculate the actual voltage on the sensing capacitor.

Abstract:A low power wireless sensor network based on LoRaWAN protocol was designed with a focus on the IoT low-cost Precision Agriculture applications, such as greenhouse sensing and actuation. All subsystems used in this research are designed by using commercial components and free or open-source software libraries. The whole system was implemented to demonstrate the feasibility of a modular system built with cheap off-the-shelf components, including sensors. The experimental outputs were collected and stored in a database managed by a virtual machine running in a cloud service. The collected data can be visualized in real time by the user with a graphical interface. The reliability of the whole system was proven during a continued experiment with two natural soils, Loamy Sand and Silty Loam. Regarding soil parameters, the system performance has been compared with that of a reference sensor from Sentek. Measurements highlighted a good agreement for the temperature within the supposed accuracy of the adopted sensors and a non-constant sensitivity for the low-cost volumetric water contents (VWC) sensor. Finally, for the low-cost VWC sensor we implemented a novel procedure to optimize the parameters of the non-linear fitting equation correlating its analog voltage output with the reference VWC.

Abstract:Soil moisture (SM) is referred to as a finite amount of water molecules within the pore spaces and it is a crucial parameter of Hydro-Meteorological processes. The behaviour of soil moisture water changes spatially and temporally in response to topography, soil characteristics, and climate[1]. Soil moisture is overseen by various hydro-meteorological factors that vary vertically with depth, laterally across terrestrial shapes, and temporarily in feedback to the climate. The precise monitoring and quantification of high-resolution surface and subsurface soil moisture observations are very important [13]. This paper highlights the outcomes of the fieldwork carried out at IITM, Pune, wherein we have developed a soil moisture and temperature measurement system using Raspberry Pi and the Internet of things (IoT). The development is classified into three stages, the first stage includes the assembly of the sensor with the microprocessor. The deployment of the low-cost system, data generation, and communication through a wireless sensor network is part of the second stage. Finally, the third stage includes real-time data visualization using a mobile application and data server for analysing soil moisture and temperature. The soil moisture profile obtained through the sensor deployed is highly correlated (r=.9) with in-situ gravimetric observations, having a root mean square error (RMSE) of about 3.1%. Similarly, the temperature observations are well-matched with the in-situ standard temperature observation. Here we present the preliminary results and compare the accuracy with the state-of-the-art sensors.

Abstract:There are many problems with agricultural technology around the world, such as extensive irrigation which causes the waste of water. To significantly improve the efficiency of irrigation water, an antenna sensor, with high sensitivity and wide range, is proposed to measure the soil water content (SWC) wirelessly. When the SWC changes, the resonant frequency of the antenna will shift. By reading the resonant frequency of the antenna sensor, the SWC can be measured and transmitted wirelessly. The antenna sensor has a wider detection range of SWC, ranging from 10% to 44%, and a novel metamaterial structure electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) is designed and its function in improving sensitivity is verified. Furthermore, by sputtering 60-nm-thick SiO2 film on the surface of the antenna patch, its sensitivity has also been greatly improved. When the SiO2 film is sputtered on the antenna sensor, its sensitivity is 7.2 MHz/% and 7.6 MHz/% when the SWC is 10%–29% and 30%–44%, respectively. In summary, this work contributes to methods and instruments for wireless measurement of the SWC.

UAV-Based Wireless Data Collection from Underground Sensor Nodes for Precision Agriculture

Abstract:In precision agriculture, information technology is used to improve farm management practices. Thereby, productivity can be increased and challenges with overfertilization and water consumption can be addressed. This requires low-power and wireless underground sensor nodes for monitoring the physical, chemical and biological soil parameters at the position of the plant roots. Three ESP32-based nodes with these capabilities have been designed to measure soil moisture and temperature. A system has been developed to collect the measurement data from the sensor nodes with a drone and forward the data to a ground station, using the LoRa transmission standard. In the investigations of the deployed system, an increase in the communication range between the sensor node and the ground station, from 300 m to 1000 m by using a drone, was demonstrated. Further, the decrease in the signal strength with the increasing sensor node depth and flight height of the drone was characterized. The maximum readout distance of 550 m between the sensor node and drone was determined. From this, it was estimated that the system enables the readout of the sensor nodes distributed over an area of 470 hectares. Additionally, analysis showed that the antenna orientation at the sensor node and the drone influenced the signal strength distribution around the node due to the antenna radiation pattern. The reproducibility of the LoRa signal strength measurements was demonstrated to support the validity of the results presented. It is concluded that the system design is suitable for collecting the data of distributed sensor nodes in agriculture.

Abstract:In recent years, the rapid development of wireless technologies has led to the widespread adoption of the Internet of Things (IoT) in various fields. One of the fastest-growing segments of IoT is the "smart" wearables sector. In the next few years, the development of flexible plant-wearable devices that can provide vital information about the physiological characteristics of plants will be essential to support the faster growth of precision agriculture. We propose a small (overall size Ø35 mm × 0.8 mm), ultra-lightweight (0.4 g), and elegant-shaped antenna for unobtrusive integration on a plant surface for application in IoT-based precision agriculture at ISM 2.45 GHz band. The radiating element has a design that resembles a dragonfly, making the antenna visually unnoticeable. We used ZZ Plant leaves as the substrate for the antenna and transparent polymer foil for encapsulating the conductive parts, achieving a highly flexible, waterproof, and chemically resistant antenna for application in harsh environments. The obtained results indicate that the antenna is resilient to changes in substrate relative permittivity up to ±20%. It exhibits high radiation efficiency (between 26% and 40%) and omnidirectional patterns across the ISM 2.45 GHz band. Moreover, the measured results align reasonably well with the simulated ones.

Precision Agriculture: Ultra-Compact Sensor and Reconfigurable Antenna for Joint Sensing and Communication

Abstract:In this paper, a joint sensing and communication system is presented for smart agriculture. The system integrates an Ultra-compact Soil Moisture Sensor (UCSMS) for precise sensing, along with a Pattern Reconfigurable Antenna (PRA) for efficient transmission of information to the base station. A multiturn complementary spiral resonator (MCSR) is etched onto the ground plane of a microstrip transmission line to achieve miniaturization. The UCSMS operates at 180 MHz with a 3-turn complementary spiral resonator (3-CSR), at 102 MHz with a 4- turn complementary spiral resonator (4-CSR), and at 86 MHz with a 5-turn complementary spiral resonator (5-CSR). Due to its low resonance frequency, the proposed UCSMS is insensitive to variations in the Volume Under Test (VUT) of soil. A probe-fed circular patch antenna is designed in the Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) band (2.45 GHz) with a maximum measured gain of 5.63 dBi. Additionally, four varactor diodes are integrated across the slots on the bottom side of the substrate to achieve pattern reconfiguration. Six different radiation patterns have been achieved by using different bias conditions of the diodes. In standby mode, PRA can serve as a means for Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) or Energy Harvesting (EH) to store power in a battery. This stored power can then be utilized to bias the varactor diodes. The combination of UCSMS and PRA enables the realization of a joint sensing and communication system. The proposed system's planar and simple geometry, along with its high sensitivity of 2.05 %, makes it suitable for smart agriculture applications. Moreover, the sensor is adaptive and capable of measuring the permittivity of various Material Under Test (MUT) within the range of 1 to 23.

A Simple Noncontact Soil Moisture Probe for Weather and Climate Applications

Abstract:The measurement of soil moisture is important for many practical applications. We describe the theoretical design of a simple, noncontact, electromagnetic probe that complements many existing soil moisture measurement techniques. The approach uses a low‐frequency (i.e., 50–150 MHz) antenna operating in proximity of the soil. The presence of the soil affects the antenna input impedance, which in turn depends on the distance between the soil and antenna and the complex dielectric constant of the soil. The latter strongly depends on the soil wetness, which suggests that bulk soil moisture integrated over a depth of roughly 1 m can be inferred from antenna impedance measurements. This is in contrast with many current higher‐frequency techniques that penetrate only a few centimeters into the soil and provide only near‐surface values of soil wetness. Our work suggests that under ideal conditions bulk soil moisture can be mapped with an accuracy on the order of 1% over horizontal scales spanning a few tens of meters to a few kilometers using simple low‐frequency antennas.

Abstract:In vivo, embryos which are homozygous for the t6 mutation die during egg cylinder development (gestation days 5.5--6.5). In vitro, these mutant embryos can be distinguished from their wild-type littermates by their developmental arrest and by the failure of their trophoblast cells to transform to giant cells. We have investigated the nature of this lethality by constructing triploid embryos with varying combinations of the t6 mutant chromosome. The phenotypes of outgrowths from these triploid embryos were examined and compared with the phenotypes of outgrowths from +/+, +/t6, and t6/t6 embryos. The data show 1) that +/t6/t6 embryos are phenotypically wild-type, while t6/t6/t6 embryos are phenotypically mutant and 2) that t6/t6/t6 and t6/t6 embryos are developmentally arrested at the same stage of outgrowth.

Abstract:Multi-Intelligent control system (MICS) development and its application handling become crucial day by day. With the emerging technology of Internet of Things (IoT), smart agriculture system has become a new trend in the agriculture field. Our proposed work uses multi-sensing applications, use of Internet of Things (IoT), smart communication, power optimization, water management, and smart security compatible with expected solutions of real time challenges in the irrigation sector and helps to make it much more productive and efficient. Introduction of LoRa Technology can be considered as a revolution in the field of IoT. LoRa Technology in the field of IoT can perform very-long range transmission with low power battery consumption. Furthermore, we are proposing a Generic MICS architecture to integrate LoRa capability in IoT-based applications for enhanced performance. Our proposed work has described IoT as a tool to integrate with the series of multifunctional sensors, microcontrollers, output devices, and data relay using LoRa mesh networking within the system. LoRa mesh networking is found with the best performance for long-range communication and able to achieve good Packet Delivery Ratio (PDR) up to 92% as compared to star network topology which is limited to 58.7% of PDR. The wireless architecture of the network layer is being designed in a way to detect the leakage of water, soil, security, and reservoir water level through the sensors interfaced with it. The proposed system has other features like cost proficiency, power optimization, reliable wireless networking, remote data accessing, and capability to reduce water wastage.

Abstract:Protected wetlands such as deltas, lakes or rivers provide a sanctuary for many endangered species. In order to protect these areas from illegal human interventions, it is necessary to monitor the unauthorized entrance of motor boats. In order to mitigate such an impact, we have developed a network of floating beacons for underwater acoustic monitoring, using LoRa communication modules operating at 433 MHz. Such beacons should be equipped with compact antennas. In this paper, we use a genetic algorithm approach to design the compact, monopole antennas required for the beacons; size constraints would apply not only to the radiating element but also to the ground plane. Although the antenna input is unbalanced, such a small ground plane may yield common mode currents on the antenna feeder, which distort the radiation pattern of the antenna. In order to investigate the effect of the common mode currents, we developed a distance averaging method, while, for characterizing the antenna, we used a single-antenna method. For the experimental validation of the system in real conditions, a continuous monitoring of the lake was carried out. During the monitoring, multiple events generated by incursions of motor boats were successfully detected and recorded.

Battery-Free Sensor Array for Wireless Multi-Depth In-Situ Sensing

Abstract:Underground in-situ sensing plays a vital role in precision agriculture and infrastructure monitoring. While existing sensing systems utilize wires to connect an array of sensors at various depths for spatial-temporal data collection, wireless underground sensor networks offer a cable-free alternative. However, these wireless sensors are typically battery-powered, necessitating periodic recharging or replacement. This paper proposes a battery-free sensor array which can be used for wireless multi-depth in-situ sensing. Utilizing Near Field Communication (NFC)-which can penetrate soil with negligible signal power loss-this sensor array can form a virtual magnetic waveguide, achieving long communication ranges. An analytical model has been developed to offer insights and determine optimal design parameters. Moreover, a prototype, constructed using off-the-shelf NFC sensors, was tested to validate the proposed concept. While this system is primarily designed for underground applications, it holds potential for other multi-depth in-situ sensing scenarios, including underwater environments.

Abstract:Water resource has become one of the most precious resources in recent decades. Agriculture accounts for about 80% of the total water usage in US. There is a demanding need for efficient irrigation and water management systems built for sustainable water utilization in smart agriculture. Real time insitu soil moisture sensing is a vital part for smart agriculture. Traditional electromagnetic (EM) based soil moisture sensing relies on EM based wireless sensor or ground penetrating radar (GPR) system. Based on the receiving signal strength and delay, tomographic techniques are used to derive the dielectric parameters of the soil, which are then into soil moisture distribution using empirical model. However, the EM signal attenuate sharply during underground propagation because of high operating frequency and lossy medium. In order to counter the disadvantage for underground sensing, we propose a Magnetic Induction (MI) based large range soil moisture sensing scheme in inhomogeneous environments. Here, we present the topology of the sensing system and analyze the channel model. The sensing process is based on transformed model, the conductivity and permittivity distribution are derived using SIRT algorithm. Through COMSOL simulation and analytical results, our proposed soil moisture sensing method achieves a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.06 m(3)/m(3) in 40 m 2D scale inhomogeneous environment range.
