Abstract:Compared with conventional multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar, polarimetric MIMO radar has been proven to hold the additional capability to operate data in the joint spatial and polarization domains. However, practical transceivers may involve antenna arrays with classical non-ideal factors (e.g., gain/phase/position errors) and polarimetric non-ideal factors (e.g., polarimetric antenna misorientation), and many current approaches cannot handle such non-ideal factors in real applications. In this study, polynomial rooting-based direction-of-arrival (DOA) and polarization parameter estimation is investigated for polarimetric monostatic MIMO radar with non-ideal transceivers. By incorporating the polarimetric manifold separation (PMS) technique, a joint DOA and polarization parameter estimation method, termed PMS 2 , is proposed with a closed-form solution. The Cramer-Rao bound for the multi-dimensional parameters involved in the estimation problem is also given. Simulation results demonstrate the performance advantages of the proposed PMS 2 approach, which is attributed to the compact structure of polarimetric transceivers and the ability of the PMS 2 approach to handle the polarimetric properties of signals. & COPY; 2023 Elsevier B.V. An Improved Scheme for High-Resolution Point Cloud Map Generation Based on FMCW Radar

Abstract:For the frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar, the angle resolution of the generated point cloud map (PCM) is limited by both the number of receiver antennas and the interference of multi-target environments. This paper proposes an improved scheme for high-resolution PCM generation based on a 77 GHz FMCW radar system. The scheme consists of a method to synthesize an equivalent virtual array based on the time-division multiplexing (TDM) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technique and an improved target detection algorithm based on multi-channel fusion. The results show that the proposed scheme could suppress the noise floor and improve the accuracy of target detection by 1.33 times compared to a conventional constant false alarm rate (CFAR) detector in a multi-target environment. Moreover, by applying the proposed scheme, the angle resolution of the PCM generated by the radar system reaches to 1.3022 degrees.

Abstract:Frequency diverse array (FDA) radar has attracted much attention due to the angle and range dependence of the beam pattern. Multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) radar has high degrees of freedom (DOF) and spatial resolution. The FDA-MIMO radar, a hybrid of FDA and MIMO radar, can be used for target parameter estimation. This paper investigates a tensor-based reduced-dimension multiple signal classification (MUSIC) method, which is used for target parameter estimation in the FDA-MIMO radar. The existing subspace methods deteriorate quickly in performance with small samples and a low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). To deal with the deterioration difficulty, the sparse estimation method is then proposed. However, the sparse algorithm has high computation complexity and poor stability, making it difficult to apply in practice. Therefore, we use tensor to capture the multi-dimensional structure of the received signal, which can optimize the effectiveness and stability of parameter estimation, reduce computation complexity and overcome performance degradation in small samples or low SNR simultaneously. In our work, we first obtain the tensor-based subspace by the high-order-singular value decomposition (HOSVD) and establish a two-dimensional spectrum function. Then the Lagrange multiplier method is applied to realize a one-dimensional spectrum function, estimate the direction of arrival (DOA) and reduce computation complexity. The transmitting steering vector is obtained by the partial derivative of the Lagrange function, and automatic pairing of target parameters is then realized. Finally, the range can be obtained by using the least square method to process the phase of transmitting steering vector. Method analysis and simulation results prove the superiority and reliability of the proposed method.

Abstract:We consider the problem of target parameter estimation in phase modulated continuous wave (PMCW) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar systems with quantized observations. We derive the Cramr-Rao bound (CRB) for jointly estimating targets amplitudes, time delays, Doppler shifts, and directions. The derived bound provides an efficient method to analyze the estimation performance achieved by different quantization schemes. We also devise the maximum likelihood (ML) estimator for the considered parameters, and a direct grid-based method (DGM) is introduced to obtain the ML estimates. To obtain the ML estimates more efficiently, a two-stage scheme is proposed. In the proposed scheme, we first formulate the estimation problem as a sparse signal recovery problem and modify the sparse learning via iterative minimization (SLIM) approach to solve it. Next, a RELAX-based iterative algorithm is proposed to refine the estimates. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can approach the CRB. Simulation results also show that using quantized observations does not affect the estimation performance significantly when the targets amplitudes are similar.

Abstract:Constant false alarm rate (CFAR) detection algorithms, which are widely used in frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar systems, achieve target detection by employing a threshold determined on the basis of a predicted background level. However, in multitarget scenarios, the multitarget shadowing effect can lead to inaccurate prediction of the background level and improper setting of the threshold, which then results in severely degraded CFAR performance. To combat this multitarget shadowing effect, a novel CFAR algorithm based on sparsity adaptive correlation maximization (SACM-CFAR) is proposed in this work. The proposed SACM-CFAR algorithm realizes target detection by utilizing the correlation between linear measurements of the radar intermediate frequency (IF) signal and the sensing matrix. To achieve a desired false alarm rate, the proposed algorithm determines the threshold by estimating the distributed parameters of the reduced sample set obtained by removing the detected targets from the original sample set. Both simulation results and field test results verify that the proposed algorithm outperforms conventional algorithms in multitarget scenarios.
A Novel CFAR Algorithm for Multi-target Detection with FMCW Radar

Abstract:Constant false alarm rate (CFAR) detection plays a vital role in frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar systems. Most existing CFAR algorithms need to estimate background level before determining the detection threshold. In a multi-target scene, existence of interference targets could cause inaccurate estimation of background level, which will then lead to severely degraded performance of the CFAR algorithm. This is also called multi-target shadowing effect. To overcome the challenge, a compressed sensing CFAR (CS-CFAR) is proposed in this work, which detects the target of interest (TOI) relying on the correlation between the linear measurements of signal and the sensing matrix, instead of relying on an estimated background level as in conventional CFAR algorithms, and achieves a required false alarm rate by estimating the distributed parameters of reduced sample model. Through doing so the proposed CS-CFAR algorithm effectively mitigates impact of interference targets on the detection performance. Superiority of the proposed algorithm over the conventional ones in multi-target scenarios is verified by both simulation and test results.

Abstract:In order to avoid the higher computational complexity caused by multidimensional parameter search, we investigate three reduced-dimension parameter estimation algorithms for the conformal frequency diverse array multiple-input–multiple-output (FDA-MIMO) radar, which are named the reduced-dimension multiple signal classification (RD-MUSIC), RD-MUSIC based on subarray (RDMBS), and parameter separation and estimation based on the virtual subarray (PSEBVS), respectively. All proposed methods are verified by numerical results which show that the proposed algorithms can make a balance between complexity and precision, such as the PSEBVS achieves lower complexity with coarse precision, while the RDMBS algorithm benefits better estimation performance at the cost of a little higher complexity. Besides, compared with the 3-D multiple signal classification (3D-MUISC) algorithm, all the proposed algorithms can jointly estimate the angle and range with lower complexity as well as the comparable estimation performance, especially for RD-MUSIC and RDMBS algorithms. Finally, an adaptive selection system for parameter estimation algorithms is presented to satisfy various requirements in different application scenarios.

Abstract:Serious mismatch of matched filters, range migration, Doppler spread, and the stochastic scattering coefficient phase caused by high-speed target motion during a long integration time will result in poor parameter estimation performance of bistatic multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar. In this paper, an algorithm for jointly estimating velocity, direction of departure (DOD), and direction of arrival (DOA) of high-speed target using bistatic MIMO radar with dual-frequency transmitters is proposed. Multiplication of the baseband radar return at one frequency with the conjugate of that at another closely spaced frequency is employed not only to eliminate the stochastic scattering coefficient phase, but also to remove the effect of range walk and Doppler spread. With the integration of the multiplied echo along the fast time axis, followed by a Fourier transform of the integrated signal over a slow time dimension, the unambiguous velocity of a target is estimated. The virtual array is effectively formed by using the estimated velocity to construct new matched filter coefficients, followed by the matching of received signals with the constructed coefficients. The DOD and DOA of the high-speed target can thus be estimated using the super-resolution algorithm. Some numerical experiments are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:Mutual interference in automotive radar will reduce the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the received signals. It is difficult to accurately distinguish the signal subspace and the noise subspace for low SNR signals, which will degrade the direction of arrival (DOA) estimation performance of the multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm. To solve this problem, this letter proposes a DOA estimation method for automotive radar based on empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and MUSIC in the case of interference. In our method, the interference signals are suppressed before the DOA estimation. The received signals of the receiving antennas affected by the interference are decomposed into several components by using EMD, and then the interference signals in the interference components are suppressed. Finally, all the received signals are used for the DOA estimation. The results of the simulation and field experiments show that the proposed method can obtain an accurate DOA estimation when the received signals contain the interference signals, and the performance of the proposed method is better than the existing DOA estimation algorithms.

Abstract:We propose a novel three-stage delay-Doppler-angle estimation algorithm for a MIMO-OFDM radar in the presence of inter-carrier interference (ICI). First, leveraging the observation that spatial co-variance matrix is independent of target delays and Dopplers, we perform angle estimation via the MUSIC algorithm. For each estimated angle, we next formulate the radar delay-Doppler estimation as a joint carrier frequency offset (CFO) and channel estimation problem via an APES (amplitude and phase estimation) spatial filtering approach by transforming the delay-Doppler parameterized radar channel into an unstructured form. In the final stage, delay and Doppler of each target can be recovered from target-specific channel estimates over time and frequency. Simulation results illustrate the superior performance of the proposed algorithm in high-mobility scenarios.

Abstract:DOA estimation for wideband multiple‐input‐multiple‐output (MIMO) radar without secondary data is investigated in this paper. The authors establish a signal model for wideband MIMO radar system, and propose a DOA estimation algorithm, named sparse learninng via iterative minimization for wideband MIMO radar. Moreover, the Cramér‐Rao bound for DOA estimation with wideband MIMO radar is derived. The estimation of target directions of arrival (DOA) for wideband multiple‐input‐multiple‐output (MIMO) radar is investigated in this article. First, the authors establish a signal model for wideband MIMO radar systems. Then, an algorithm is proposed to estimate the target angles without secondary data (i.e. the training data from slow‐time is not required).The proposed algorithm unitises the spatial sparsity of target signals and it is derived under the Bayesian framework. It can estimate the spatial pseudo‐spectra of the targets through cyclic optimisation. Additionally, it is hyperparameter‐free and guarantees convergence. To analyse the performance of the proposed algorithm, the Cramér‐Rao bound (CRB) is derived for DOA estimation with wideband MIMO radar. Numerical examples demonstrate that even without secondary data, the proposed algorithm can accurately estimate the DOA of the targets.

Abstract:Imaging of maneuvering targets has become a challenging topic recently. This study proposes an improved MUSIC-based single-snapshot imaging method for OFDM-MIMO radar. At the transmitter part, for orthogonal waveform generation, the interleaved OFDM structure is developed that each transmitter only radiates at an equidistant set of OFDM subcarriers unique to itself. At the receiver part, a novel preprocessing scheme is presented to separate multiple transmit/receive paths and compensate the reference point. Preprocessed echo matrix can fit the model of two-Dimensional (2D) MUSIC algorithm, except for the coupling between radial/cross-range in the virtual antenna array. Correspondingly, we modify the 2D ElementSpace (ES)-MUSIC. In the meantime, a 2D Reduced-Dimension BeamSpace Unitary-MUSIC (RD-BS-UMUSIC) algorithm is proposed for computational complexity reduction and estimation performance enhancement. Numerical results of a simulated target consists of limited number of scatterers and a complex target (a Boeing 737-800 plane) verify that the proposed algorithm can improve the imaging quality and reduce computational complexity effectively compared with the traditional method.

Abstract:We propose a frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar estimation algorithm with high resolution and low complexity. The fast Fourier transform (FFT)-based algorithms and multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithms are used as algorithms for estimating target parameters in the FMCW radar systems. FFT-based and MUSIC algorithms have tradeoff characteristics between resolution performance and complexity. While FFT-based algorithms have the advantage of very low complexity, they have the disadvantage of a low-resolution performance; that is, estimating multiple targets with similar parameters as a single target. On the other hand, subspace-based algorithms have the advantage of a high-resolution performance, but have a problem of very high complexity. In this paper, we propose an algorithm with reduced complexity, while achieving the high-resolution performance of the subspace-based algorithm by utilizing the advantages of the two algorithms; namely, the low-complexity advantage of FFT-based algorithms and the high-resolution performance of the MUSIC algorithms. The proposed algorithm first reduces the amount of data used as input to the subspace-based algorithm by using the estimation results obtained by FFT. Secondly, it significantly reduces the range of search regions considered for pseudo-spectrum calculations in the subspace-based algorithm. The simulation and experiment results show that the proposed algorithm achieves a similar performance compared with the conventional and low complexity MUSIC algorithms, despite its considerably lower complexity.

Abstract:The development of communication and radar fusion systems is critical to enhancing sensor network security. However, in spectrum resource environments, the technology for processing fusion signals may face limitations due to multi-user access and interference issues. Traditional signal processing algorithms may also be influenced by waveform information. As a result, its implementation is limited in low-noise-ratio settings. Based on the advantages of multiple-input multiple-output technology in the field of communication and radar, in order to better ensure the non-interference between the communication and radar systems, the study introduces the orthogonal theory. It proposes a target detection and parameter estimation method based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) technology in the signal modulation domain. It utilizes sparse tensor theory to obtain low rank features of signals, transform the dimensions of target parameter problems, and solve tensor rank 1 approximation problems. This can better improve the performance of target parameter estimation. The simulation analysis of the proposed method shows that the average error values of the improved decomposition method in Doppler frequency shift estimation and angle estimation are close to 10–2 and 10–1 respectively. The system runs for less than 5 seconds, and its average target detection accuracy exceeds 96%. The proposed orthogonal frequency division multiplexing technique can provide technical support for sensor networks in wireless communication and IOT networks, efficiently reducing computational complexity and interference among users. This can serve as a valuable reference for enhancing the security of communication radar fusion systems.

Abstract:<p>The frequency diverse array (FDA) is mainly applied to achieving target localization under the complicated electromagnetic jamming condition. The bistatic multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) radar with FDA has gained comprehensive attention in recent years. An innovative method covering the transmitting subarray scheme and the unitary estimation of signal parameters via rotational invariance technology (ESPRIT) is proposed for joint direction of departure (DOD), direction of arrival (DOA), and range estimation. First, a non-overlapping subarray scheme is designed for the transmitting array to decouple DOD and range. For the purpose of enhancing the estimation accuracy and reducing the computational complexity, the real-valued rotational invariance matrix is obtained via applying the unitary transformation to the extended data. The removal method is proposed to avoid the periodic phase ambiguity. The pairing method is put forward to achieving the match of three-dimensional parameter (DOD, DOA and range) for multiple targets. The computational complexity of the proposed algorithm and conventional ESPRIT algorithm are also provided. Finally, extensive experiment results indicate that the proposed algorithm shows the superior performance than the ESPRIT algorithm.</p>

Abstract:Multiple input multiple output with frequency diversity array (FDA-MIMO) radar has unique advantages in mainlobe deception jamming suppression and target location. However, if the training sample contains the target signal, it will lead to poor jamming suppression performance and large target measurement error. To deal with the problem, a method of coarse target location in the time domain is proposed based on the cumulative sampling analysis. Taking full advantages of the strongest correlation characteristic between the expected steering vector and the true target, the feature vector and feature value corresponding to the true target are found after feature decomposition. The time domain location of the target is roughly estimated during the cumulative sampling analysis from near to far. Then, a pure jamming training sample can be obtained by avoiding the location. Noise subspace projection algorithm is used to measure the angle and range of the target while suppressing mainlobe jamming. The simulation results show that the proposed method can roughly estimate the target location in the time domain when the mainlobe deception jamming completely covers the target. Compared with conventional methods, the performance of jamming suppression and target localization error are closer to the performance of ideal sampling.

Multi-target Range and Angle detection for MIMO-FMCW radar with limited antennas

Abstract:Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar has several advantages with respect to the traditional radar array systems in terms of performance and flexibility. However, in order to achieve high angular resolution, a MIMO radar requires a large number of transmit and receive antennas, which increases hardware design and computational complexities. Although spatial compressive sensing (CS) has been recently considered for a pulsed-waveform MIMO radar with sparse random arrays, such methods for the frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar remain largely unexplored. In this context, we propose a novel multi-target localization algorithm in the range-angle domain for a MIMO FMCW radar with a sparse array of randomly placed transmit and receive elements. In particular, we first obtain the targets' range-delays using a discrete Fourier transform (DFT)-based focusing operation. The target angles are then recovered at each detected range using CS-based techniques exploiting the sparsity of the target scene. Our simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm over the classical methods in detecting multiple targets with a sparse array.

Target Estimation by Exploiting Low Rank Structure in Widely Separated MIMO Radar

Abstract:We present a low-complexity widely separated multiple-input-multiple-output (WS-MIMO) radar that samples the signals at each of its multiple receivers at reduced rates. We process the low-rate samples of all transmit-receive chains at each receiver as data matrices. We demonstrate that each of these matrices is low rank as long as the target moves slowly within a coherent processing interval. We apply recent advances in matrix completion to recover the missing samples of each receiver signal matrix at the common fusion center. The maximum likelihood method is then employed to estimate the targets' positions and Doppler velocities. Unlike other WS-MIMO formulations based on compressed sensing, our approach recovers target parameters at reduced rates, and is gridless. Further, there is no loss of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) due to subsampling. Numerical experiments demonstrate reasonably accurate target localization at SNR of 20 dB and sampling rate reduction to 20%.

Abstract:Phase-modulated continuous-wave (PMCW) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar systems are known to possess excellent mutual interference mitigation capabilities, but require costly and power-hungry high sampling rate and high-precision analog-to-digital converters (ADC's). To reduce cost and power consumption, we consider a mixed-ADC architecture, in which most receive antenna outputs are sampled by one-bit ADC's, and only one or a few outputs by high-precision ADC's. We first derive the Cramér-Rao bound (CRB) for the mixed-ADC based PMCW MIMO radar to characterize the best achievable performance of an unbiased target parameter estimator. The CRB analysis demonstrates that the mixed-ADC architecture with a relatively small number of high-precision ADC's and a large number of one-bit ADC's allows us to drastically reduce the hardware cost and power consumption while still maintain a high dynamic range needed for autonomous driving applications. We also introduce a two-step estimator to realize the computationally efficient maximum likelihood (ML) estimation of the target parameters. We formulate the angle-Doppler imaging problem as a sparse parameter estimation problem, and a computationally efficient majorization-minimization (MM) based estimator of sparse parameters, referred to as mLIKES, is devised for accurate angle-Doppler imaging. This is followed by using a relaxation-based approach to cyclically refine the results of mLIKES for accurate off-grid target parameter estimation. Numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms for angle-Doppler imaging using mixed-ADC based PMCW MIMO radar.
