Abstract:Current sustainability-oriented trends affect polyurethane (PU) materials and stimulate the incorporation of recycled or waste-based materials as fillers. Ground tire rubber (GTR) poses as an auspicious candidate due to the excellent performance of car tires. Despite the benefits related to the mechanical performance, it contributes to the increasing flammability of the resulting composites. Herein, presented work assessed the impact of hybrid flame retardant (FR) combinations of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) or melamine cyanurate (MC) with organophosphorus compounds on the performance of foamed flexible PU/GTR composites. Such works are of vital importance, because matching to the needs of material with the mode of action of particular FRs is quite challenging. Except for the flammability reduction, they also affect structure and performance of composites. Fire resistance was enhanced for all applied FRs compositions; however, APP was found more effective than MC due to the efficient formation of protective char layer. Moreover, introduction of MC induced heterogeneity of cellular structure and excessive stiffening of PU structure, which increased its friability and cells' coalescence, deteriorating thermal insulation performance and damping ability.

Effect of Surface Modification of Montmorillonite on the Properties of Rigid Polyurethane Foam Composites

Abstract:This study investigated the influence of various organically modified montmorillonites (organoclays) on the structure and properties of rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) nanocomposites. The organoclays were modified with cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), methyl tallow bis(2-hydroxyethyl) quaternary ammonium chloride (MT2ETOH) and tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane (THMA) and denoted as CMMT, Cloisite 30B and OMMT, respectively. MT2ETOH and THMA contain hydroxyl groups, while THMA does not have long aliphatic tail in its molecule. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy show that OMMT and Cloisite 30B can be partially exfoliated in the RPUF nanocomposites because their intercalating agents MT2ETOH and THMA can react with isocyanate. However, CMMT modified with nonreactive CTAB is mainly intercalated in the RPUF matrices. At a relatively low filler content, the RPUF/CMMT composite foam has a higher specific compressive strength (the ratio of compressive strength against the apparent density of the foams), while at relatively high filler contents, RPUF/Cloisite 30B and RPUF/OMMT composites have higher specific compressive strengths, higher modulus and more uniform pore size than the RPUF/CMMT composite.

Abstract:The application range of flexible polyurethane (PU) foams is comprehensive because of their versatility and flexibility in adjusting structure and performance. In addition to the investigations associated with further broadening of their potential properties, researchers are looking for new raw materials, beneficially originated from renewable resources or recycling. A great example of such a material is ground tire rubber (GTR)—the product of the material recycling of post-consumer car tires. To fully exploit the benefits of this material, it should be modified to enhance the interfacial interactions between PU and GTR. In the presented work, GTR particles were thermo-mechanically modified with the addition of fresh and waste rapeseed oil in the reactive extrusion process. The introduction of modified GTR particles into a flexible PU matrix caused a beneficial 17–28% decrease in average cell diameters. Such an effect caused an even 5% drop in thermal conductivity coefficient values, enhancing thermal insulation performance. The application of waste oil resulted in the superior mechanical performance of composites compared to the fresh one and thermo-mechanical modification without oils. The compressive and tensile performance of composites filled with waste oil-modified GTR was almost the same as for the unfilled foam. Moreover, the introduction of ground tire rubber particles enhanced the thermal stability of neat polyurethane foam.

Abstract:Currently, postulated trends and law regulations tend to direct polymer technology toward sustainability and environmentally friendly solutions. These approaches are expressed by keeping materials in a loop aimed at the circular economy and by reducing the environmental burdens related to the production and use of polymers and polymer-based materials. The application of recycled or waste-based materials often deals efficiently with the first issue but at the expense of the final products' performance, which requires various additives, often synthetic and petroleum-based, with limited sustainability. Therefore, a significant portion of research is often required to address the drawbacks induced by the application of secondary raw materials. Herein, the presented study aimed to investigate the fire performance of polymer composites containing highly flammable matrix polyurethane (PU) foam and filler ground tire rubber (GTR) originating from car tire recycling. Due to the nature of both phases and potential applications in the construction and building or automotive sectors, the flammability of these composites should be reduced. Nevertheless, this issue has hardly been analyzed in literature and dominantly in our previous works. Herein, the presented work provided the next step and investigated the input of nanoclays to the synergistic flammability reduction in flexible, foamed PU/GTR composites. Hybrid compositions of organophosphorus FRs with expandable graphite (EG) in varying proportions and with the addition of surface-modified nanoclays were examined. Changes in the parameters obtained during cone calorimeter tests were determined, discussed, and evaluated with the fire performance index and flame retardancy index, two parameters whose goal is to quantify the overall fire performance of polymer-based materials.

Abstract:An overview on static and dynamic behavior of functional polymeric foams is presented. In particular, a PU (Poly Urethane) open cells foam was manufactured to obtain specimens with different nanostructured coatings. An experimental campaign was performed with 7 different kind of multilayer coatings. Quasi-static compression preconditioning and compression fatigue cycles were applied and 5 parameters were measured during cycling: Hysteresis loop area, Dissipated energy per cycle, Stiffness degradation, Secant modulus, Loss factor values. Comprehensive Investigation of Stoichiometry–Structure–Performance Relationships in Flexible Polyurethane Foams

Abstract:Polyurethane (PU) foams are versatile materials with a broad application range. Their performance is driven by the stoichiometry of polymerization reaction, which has been investigated in several works. However, the analysis was often limited only to selected properties and compared samples differing in apparent density, significantly influencing their performance. In the bigger picture, there is still a lack of comprehensive studies dealing with the stoichiometry impact on PU foams' performance. Herein, flexible PU foams with a similar apparent density but differing in the isocyanate index (IIso) (from 0.80 to 1.20) were prepared. The stoichiometry–structure–performance relationships were investigated considering cellular and chemical structure, as well as the static and dynamic mechanical properties, thermal stability, thermal insulation, and acoustic performance. For IIso of 1.00, the biggest cell diameters of 274 μm were noted, which was 21–25% higher compared to 0.80 and 1.20 values. Increasing IIso reduced open cell content from 83.1 to 22.4%, which, combined with stiffening of structure (rise of modulus from 63 to 2787 kPa) resulting from crosslinking, limited the sound suppression ability around five times. On the other hand, it significantly strengthened the material, increasing tensile and compressive strength 4 and 13 times, respectively. Changes in the foams' performance were also induced by the glass transition temperature shift from 6.1 to 31.7 °C, resulting from a greater extent of urethane groups' generation and additional isocyanate reactions. Generally, the presented work provides important insights into preparing flexible PU foams and could be very useful for the future development of these materials.

Abstract:Inadequate fire resistance of polymers raises questions about their advanced applications. Flexible polyurethane (PU) foams have myriad applications but inherently suffer from very high flammability. Because of the dependency of the ultimate properties (mechanical and damping performance) of PU foams on their cellular structure, reinforcement of PU with additives brings about further concerns. Though they are highly flammable and known for their environmental consequences, rubber wastes are desired from a circularity standpoint, which can also improve the mechanical properties of PU foams. In this work, melamine cyanurate (MC), melamine polyphosphate (MPP), and ammonium polyphosphate (APP) are used as well-known flame retardants (FRs) to develop highly fire-retardant ground tire rubber (GTR) particles for flexible PU foams. Analysis of the burning behavior of the resulting PU/GTR composites revealed that the armed GTR particles endowed PU with reduced flammability expressed by over 30% increase in limiting oxygen index, 50% drop in peak heat release rate, as well as reduced smoke generation. The Flame Retardancy Index (FRI) was used to classify and label PU/GTR composites such that the amount of GTR was found to be more important than that of FR type. The wide range of FRI (0.94–7.56), taking Poor to Good performance labels, was indicative of the sensitivity of flame retardancy to the hybridization of FR with GTR components, a feature of practicality. The results are promising for fire protection requirements in buildings; however, the flammability reduction was achieved at the expense of mechanical and thermal insulation performance.

Abstract:Schematic procedure for fabricating polyurethane foams filled with pre‐treated ground tire rubber. In this work we use ground tire rubber (GTR) powder obtained by grinding worn tire treads as reinforcer agent in flexible polyurethane (PU). Characterization of the microstructure of the as‐received powder is achieved using a series of standard techniques including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), granulometry‐laser, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and x‐ray diffraction (XRD). To have complementary physical information the composition and thermal characteristics of the GTR powder, thermogravimetry analysis (TGA) is also performed. The set of these preliminary characterizations shows that the GTR powder particles can be used as reinforcing fillers. For the purpose of good compatibility with the PU matrix, the GTR powder is subjected to chemical treatments for reducing the impurities on the powder particles and to create functional groups at their surface. Subsequently, a series of GTR/PU composite samples are prepared with different weight fractions of GTR using free rising foam method. The GTR/PU composites are then characterized to assess the effect of the GTR content and their chemically pre‐treatment on thermal stability, compression mechanical behavior as well as sound attenuation properties. Collectively, these results indicate a significant improvement of both thermal and mechanical properties of the GTR/PU composites compared to the pristine PU matrix. Furthermore, it is also emphasized that the sound absorption response shows a significant shift of the maximum of the absorption coefficient toward lower frequencies resulting from simultaneous increase in air‐flow resistivity and tortuosity which can have great potential application in the field of underwater acoustics. The effects of chemical treatments and GTR amount are also discussed. It is also shown that the results show improvement when H2O2 solvent is used in comparison with NaOH, and the optimal properties are reached for PU samples containing 20 wt% of GTR whatever the pre‐treatment is.

Abstract:The effect of surface modifications of carbon black (CB) on its dispersion in polyether polyol and CB/polyurethane (PU) foams and the properties of the CB/PU composite foams was investigated. Pristine CB (p-CB) was oxidized in nitric acid to obtain oxidized CB (o-CB), and then by the esterification reaction between the carboxyl groups of o-CB and the hydroxyl groups of polyether polyol, polyol grafted CB (g-CB) was obtained. Optical microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy observations showed that surface modifications effectively improved the dispersion of CB in polyether polyol and in the final composite foams. Compared with the p-CB/PU foams, the o-CB/PU and g-CB/PU composite foams exhibited improved conductivities, storage moduli, and increased glass transition temperatures. The compressive strengths of the p-CB/PU and o-CB/PU composite foams decreased with the increase of filler contents, but g-CB has no negative effect on the compressive strength even at a filler content as high as 8 phr. Furthermore, the cell sizes for the o-CB/PU and g-CB/PU composite foams were more uniform than those of p-CB/PU foams.
Processing and Mechanical Properties of Highly Filled PP/GTR Compounds

Abstract:Ground rubber from automobile tires is very difficult to recycle due to the cross-linking of the macromolecules and thus the lack of thermoplastic properties. The research consisted of assessing the processing possibility via the injection of highly filled PP/GTR compounds modified with 1.5 wt.% 2.5-dimethyl-2.5-di-(tert-butylperoxy)-hexane. GTR dosing ranged from 30 wt.% up to 90 wt.%. The evaluation of the processing properties of the obtained materials was carried out on the basis of the melt flow index test results and the signals recorded during processing by the injection molding by temperature and pressure sensors placed in the mold. The influence of the applied modifier on the changes in the mechanical properties of PP/GTR was determined with hardness, impact and static tensile tests. Moreover, thermal properties were obtained by the differential scanning calorimetry method. It has been found that it is possible to efficiently process compounds with high GTR content using injection molding. The presence of the filler allows to significantly reduce the cooling time in the injection mold and thus the time of the production cycle. It has been confirmed that 2.5-dimethyl-2.5-di-(tert-butylperoxy)-hexane modifies the rheological properties of PP and thus the PP/GTR composition. The lower viscosity of the matrix results in a more accurate bonding with the developed surface of the GTR grains, which results in better mechanical properties of the rubber-filled polypropylene.

Abstract:Polyurethane/graphene nanocomposites were synthesized using commercial thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU, Apilon 52DE55), and two types of graphene derivatives: graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO). Fourier Transformation Infrared Spectroscopy Fourier Transformation Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) spectroscopy, TEM, and SEM microscopy and XRD techniques were used to chemically and structurally characterize GNP and RGO nanofillers. The properties of the new TPU nanocomposite materials were studied using thermal analysis techniques (Dynamical Mechanical Analysis (DMA), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TG)) to describe the influence of graphene nanofillers on polyurethane matrix. Our investigation describes the comparison of two types of graphene derivatives, commercial one (GNP) and synthesized (RGO) on thermoplastic polyurethanes. These nanofillers provides opportunities to achieve compatibility with the TPU matrix. The property enhancements are attributed commonly to high aspect ratio of graphene nanoplatelets and filler-polymer interactions at the interface. The obtained nanocomposites exhibit higher thermal and mechanical properties due to the good dispersion of both nanofillers into TPU matrix. It was found that the addition of 2 wt % of the nanofiller could lead to a significant reinforcement effect on the TPU matrix. Also, with high content of nanofiller (GNP and RGO), the Payne effect was observed.

Investigating the Impact of Curing System on Structure-Property Relationship of Natural Rubber Modified with Brewery By-Product and Ground Tire Rubber

Abstract:The application of wastes as a filler/reinforcement phase in polymers is a new strategy to modify the performance properties and reduce the price of biocomposites. The use of these fillers, coming from agricultural waste (cellulose/lignocellulose-based fillers) and waste rubbers, constitutes a method for the management of post-consumer waste. In this paper, highly-filled biocomposites based on natural rubber (NR) and ground tire rubber (GTR)/brewers' spent grain (BSG) hybrid reinforcements, were prepared using two different curing systems: (i) sulfur-based and (ii) dicumyl peroxide (DCP). The influence of the amount of fillers (in 100/0, 50/50, and 0/100 ratios in parts per hundred of rubber) and type of curing system on the final properties of biocomposites was evaluated by the oscillating disc rheometer, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, swelling behavior, tensile testing, and impedance tube measurements. The results show, that the scorch time and the optimum curing time values of sulfur cured biocomposites are affected by the change of the hybrid filler ratio while using the DCP curing system, and the obtained values do not show significant variations. The results conclude that the biocomposites cured with sulfur have better physico-mechanical and acoustic absorption, and that the type of curing system does not influence their thermal stability. The overall analysis indicates that the difference in final properties of highly filled biocomposites cured with two different systems is mainly affected by the: (i) cross-linking efficiency, (ii) partial absorption and reactions between fillers and used additives, and (iii) affinity of additives to applied fillers.

Abstract:The increasing interest in polyurethane materials has raised the question of the environmental impact of these materials. For this reason, the scientists aim to find an extremely difficult balance between new material technologies and sustainable development. This work attempts to validate the possibility of replacing petrochemical polyols with previously synthesized bio-polyols and their impact on the structure and properties of rigid polyurethane-polyisocyanurate (PUR-PIR). To date, biobased polyols were frequently used in the manufacturing of PU, but application of bio-polyols synthesized via solvothermal liquefaction using different chains of polyethylene glycol has not been comprehensively discussed. In this work, ten sets of rigid polyurethane foams were synthesized. The influence of bio-polyols addition on foam properties was investigated by mechanical testing, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and cone calorimetry. The structure was determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and a gas pycnometer. The tests revealed a significant extension of foam growth time, which can be explained by possible steric hindrances and the presence of less reactive secondary hydroxyl groups. Moreover, an increase average size of pores and aspect ratio was noticed. This can be interpreted by the modification of the cell growth process by the introduction of a less reactive bio-polyol with different viscosity. The analysis of foams mechanical properties showed that the normalized compressive strength increased up to 40% due to incorporation of more cross-linked structures. The thermogravimetric analysis demonstrated that the addition of bio-based polyols increased temperature of 2% (T 2% ) and 5% (T 5% ) mass degradation. On the other hand, evaluation of flammability of manufactured foams showed increase of total heat release (HRR) and smoke release (TSR) what may be caused by reduction of char layer stability. These findings add substantially to our understanding of the incorporation of bio-polyols into industrial polyurethane systems and suggest the necessity of conducting further research on these materials.

The Effect of a Chemical Foaming Agent and the Isocyanate Index on the Properties of Open-Cell Polyurethane Foams

Abstract:This article presents an ecological approach based on climate neutrality to the synthesis of open-cell polyurethane foams with modified used cooking rapeseed oils. Water was used as a chemical blowing agent in the amount of 20–28 wt.% in relation to the weight of the bio-polyol. The influence of water on the physical and mechanical properties of the synthesized foams was investigated. The resultant porous materials were tested for the content of closed cells, cell structure, apparent density, thermal conductivity, compressive strength, and dimensional stability. It was found that the apparent density decreased in the range of 11–13 kg/m3 when the amount of the foaming agent was increased. In the next step, a foam with a water content of 22% was selected as having the most favorable physico–mechanical properties among all the foams with various water contents. The isocyanate index of the selected foam was then changed from 0.6 to 1.1 and it was observed that the compressive strength increased by an average of 10 kPa. The thermal conductivity coefficients of the final materials with different water contents and isocyanate indices were comparable and in the range of 40–43 mW/m·K.

Abstract:Recently, the influence of the concept of environmental sustainability has increased, which includes environmentally friendly measures related to reducing the consumption of petrochemical fuels and converting post-production feedstocks into raw materials for the synthesis of polymeric materials, the addition of which would improve the performance of the final product. In this regard, the development of bio-based polyurethane foams can be carried out by, among other things, modifying polyurethane foams with vegetable or waste fillers. This paper investigates the possibility of using walnut shells (WS) and the mineral fillers vermiculite (V) and perlite (P) as a flame retardant to increase fire safety and thermal stability at higher temperatures. The effects of the fillers in amounts of 10 wt.% on selected properties of the polyurethane composites, such as rheological properties (dynamic viscosity and processing times), mechanical properties (compressive strength, flexural strength, and hardness), insulating properties (thermal conductivity), and flame retardant properties (e.g., ignition time, limiting oxygen index, and peak heat release) were investigated. It has been shown that polyurethane foams containing fillers have better performance properties compared to unmodified polyurethane foams.

Abstract:Bacteriophage phi 6 has a genome of three segments of double-stranded RNA enclosed in a procapsid composed of four different proteins. The preformed procapsid is capable of packaging plus-strand transcripts of the genomic segments in an in vitro reaction. The packaging of the three segments shows a strong order of dependence in that segment S packages alone, but segment M requires S and and segment L requires S and M for efficient packaging. Packaging of individual segments is dependent on unique packaging sequences of about 200 nucleotides near the 5' ends of the segments. Deletions that invade these regions destroy packaging competence for the particular segment and for the dependent segments as well. In the presence of 2 mM phosphate and at magnesium ion concentrations above 4 mM, packaging becomes progressively more independent and ultimately nonspecific with respect to phi 6 sequences.

Abstract:Nanocomposite flexible polyurethane foams (nFPUfs) were obtained by modifying the polyurethane formulation by adding a halloysite nano-filler in the amount of one to five parts by weight per hundred parts of used polyol (php). Flexible polyurethane (PU) foams with an open-cell structure and with a beneficial SAG factor were obtained. Premixes with nano-filler had a lower reactivity than the reference PU system. This favored the production of smaller cells, but with a more rounded shape in comparison with the REF foam without the nano-filler. During the study, the morphology and physical and mechanical properties were characterized, including apparent density, compressive stress, rebound flexibility, SAG factor, closed-cell content, and thermal stability, and compared with the properties of the unmodified reference foam. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that the cell structures of all prepared foams were open, and the cell size decreased with increasing nano-filler content. Apparent densities, SAG factors and rebound flexibilities of the foams increased with the increase of nano-filler content, while the resistance to permanent deformation showed the opposite trend. The proper selection of raw materials and optimally developed polyurethane formulations allow for obtaining environmentally friendly foams with favorable functional properties, taking into account price and the needs of sustainable development in the synthesis of flexible foams dedicated to the upholstery industry.

Polyhydroxylated Nanosized Graphite as Multifunctional Building Block for Polyurethanes

Abstract:Polyurethane nanocomposites were prepared with a nanosized high surface area graphite (HSAG) functionalized on its edges with hydroxyl groups as a building block. Edge functionalization of HSAG was obtained through reaction with KOH. The addition of OH groups was demonstrated by means of infrared (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and the Boehm titration allowed estimation of a level of about 5.0 mmolOH/gHSAG. Results from wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and Raman spectroscopy suggested that functionalization of the graphene layers occurred on the edges. The evaluation of the Hansen solubility parameters of G-OH revealed a substantial increase of δP and δH parameters with respect to HSAG. In line with these findings, homogeneous and stable dispersions of G-OH in a polyol were obtained. PU were prepared by mixing a dispersion of G-OH in cis-1,4-butenediol with hexamethylene diisocyanate. A model reaction between catechol, 1,4-butanediol, and hexamethylene diisocyanate demonstrated the reactivity of hydroxylated aromatic rings with isocyanate groups. PU-based G-OH, characterized with WAXD and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), revealed lower Tg, higher Tc, Tm, and crystallinity than PU without G-OH. These results could be due to the higher flexibility of the polymer chains, likely a consequence of the dilution of the urethane bonds by the carbon substrate. Hence, G-OH allowed the preparation of PU with a larger temperature range between Tg and Tm, with potential positive impact on material applications. The model reaction between butylisocyanate and 1-butanol revealed that HSAG and G-OH promote efficient formation of the urethane bond, even in the absence of a catalyst. The effect of high surface area carbon on the nucleophilic oxygen attack to the isocyanate group can be hypothesized. The results here reported lead us to comment that a reactive nanosized sp2 carbon allotrope, such as G-OH, can be used as a multifunctional building block of PU. Indeed, G-OH is a comonomer of PU, a promoter of the polymerization reaction, and can definitely act as reinforcing filler by tuning its amount in the final nanocomposite leading to highly versatile materials. The larger temperature range between Tg and Tm, together with the presence of G-OH acting as a reinforcing agent, could allow the production of piezoresistive sensing, shape-memory PU with good mechanical features.

Abstract:Polyurethane (PU) is a typical product of the reaction between isocyanate and polyol, whose ratio would greatly influence material properties. In this paper, to investigate the influence of isocyanate on PU thermal stability and flammability, three kinds of rigid polyurethanes (RPUs) with different isocyanate ratio (1.05, 1.1, and 2.0) were manufactured in a laboratory and employed to have a series of TG (thermogravimetry), DSC (differential scanning calorimetry), and cone calorimetry tests. Kissinger’s method was used to calculate the activation energy and judge their stabilities. However, for such a complex degradation which consists of five reactions, it does not make sense by Kissinger method to obtain only two peak active energies. Considering complexity of PU degradation in air, genetic algorithm (GA) was employed to calculate kinetic triplets of five sub-reactions. The effects of isocyanate contents on each sub-reaction stability were obtained and then analyzed. By cone calorimeter testing, we found that great differences in heat release rate data. However, DSC analysis showed a complete opposite changed trend. Such difference is caused by DSC and calorimeter’s sample morphology, the former using grinded polyurethane powders but the latter polyurethane foam block.
