Microscopic Theory of Traffic Flow Instability Governing Traffic Breakdown at Highway Bottlenecks: Growing Wave of Increase in Speed in Synchronized Flow

Abstract:We have revealed a growing local speed wave of increase in speed that can randomly occur in synchronized flow (S) at a highway bottleneck. The development of such a traffic flow instability leads to free flow (F) at the bottleneck; therefore, we call this instability as an S$\rightarrow$F instability. Whereas the S$\rightarrow$F instability leads to a local {\it increase in speed} (growing acceleration wave), in contrast, the classical traffic flow instability introduced in 50s--60s and incorporated later in a huge number of traffic flow models leads to a growing wave of a local {\it decrease in speed} (growing deceleration wave). We have found that the S$\rightarrow$F instability can occur only, if there is a finite time delay in driver over-acceleration. The initial speed disturbance of increase in speed (called "speed peak") that initiates the S$\rightarrow$F instability occurs usually at the downstream front of synchronized flow at the bottleneck. There can be many speed peaks with random amplitudes that occur randomly over time. It has been found that the S$\rightarrow$F instability exhibits the nucleation nature: Only when a speed peak amplitude is large enough, the S$\rightarrow$F instability occurs; in contrast, speed peaks of smaller amplitudes cause dissolving speed waves of a local increase in speed(dissolving acceleration waves) in synchronized flow. We have found that the S$\rightarrow$F instability governs traffic breakdown -- a phase transition from free flow to synchronized flow (F$\rightarrow$S transition) at the bottleneck: The nucleation nature of the S$\rightarrow$F instability explains the metastability of free flow with respect to an F$\rightarrow$S Transition at the bottleneck.

[Radiotherapy of kidney cancer].

Abstract:The benefit of low-dose preoperative radiotherapy in hypernephroma has not been proven in phase-II studies. Medium-dose preoperative radiotherapy many transform inoperable to operable tumors in numerous cases. In a randomized study, no prolongation of survival has been found, however. Many retrospective studies, in part with questionable design, have found no value of routinely used postoperative irradiation. Presently, it is indicated in advanced local tumor stages (pT3 and pT4) and residual tumors. Postoperative radiotherapy in high-risk patients using defined techniques and preoperative radiotherapy applying modern diagnostic equipment for treatment planning remains to be evaluated. For palliation, radiotherapy is useful treating brain-, lung- and bone metastases and inoperable primary tumors.

Abstract:We have found that a variety of phase transitions occurring between three traffic phases (free flow (F), synchronized flow (S), and wide moving jam (J)) determine the spatiotemporal dynamics of traffic consisting of 100% automated-driving vehicles moving on a two-lane road with an on-ramp bottleneck. This means that three-phase traffic theory is a common framework for the description of traffic states independent of whether human-driving or automated-driving vehicles move in vehicular traffic. To prove this, we have studied automated-driving vehicular traffic with the use of classical Helly's model (1959) widely applied for automated vehicle motion. Although dynamic rules of the motion of automated-driving vehicles in a road lane are qualitatively different from those of human-driving vehicles, we have revealed that a free-flow-to-synchronized-flow transition (F$\rightarrow$S transition) exhibits the nucleation nature, which was observed in empirical field data measured in traffic consisting of 100% human-driving vehicles. The physics of the nucleation nature of the F$\rightarrow$S transition in automated-driving traffic is associated with a discontinuity in the rate of lane-changing that causes the discontinuity in the rate of over-acceleration. This discontinuous character of over-acceleration leads to both the existence and self-maintaining of synchronized flow at the bottleneck in automated-driving vehicular traffic as well as to the existence at any time instant of a range of highway capacities between some minimum and maximum capacities. Within the capacity range, an F$\rightarrow$S transition can be induced; however, when the maximum capacity is exceeded, then after some time-delay a spontaneous F$\rightarrow$S transition occurs at the bottleneck. The phases F, S, and J can coexist each other in space and time.

Phase transitions in traffic flow on multilane roads

Abstract:Based on empirical and numerical analyses of vehicular traffic, the physics of spatiotemporal phase transitions in traffic flow on multilane roads is revealed. The complex dynamics of moving jams observed in single vehicle data measured by video cameras on American highways is explained by the nucleation-interruption effect in synchronized flow, i.e., the spontaneous nucleation of a narrow moving jam with the subsequent jam dissolution. We find that (i) lane changing, vehicle merging from on-ramps, and vehicle leaving to off-ramps result in different traffic phases-free flow, synchronized flow, and wide moving jams-occurring and coexisting in different road lanes as well as in diverse phase transitions between the traffic phases; (ii) in synchronized flow, the phase transitions are responsible for a non-regular moving jam dynamics that explains measured single vehicle data: moving jams emerge and dissolve randomly at various road locations in different lanes; (iii) the phase transitions result also in diverse expanded general congested patterns occurring at closely located bottlenecks.
A Traffic Breakdown Model Based on Queueing Theory

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a queueing model to describe traffic breakdown phenomena caused by perturbations of on-ramp merging vehicles. In congested mainline traffic flow, we assume that a merging vehicle will trigger a jam queue formulation. If this jam queue cannot dissipate before the next vehicle merges into the main road, it could grow into a wide jam and eventually result in traffic breakdown. Different from many existing models that focused on the propagation of jam waves, the proposed model emphasizes the size evolution of a jam queue (local congested vehicle cluster) instead of its spatial evolutions. This new approach reduces analysis difficulties and allows us to directly link microscopic driving behaviors with macroscopic breakdown phenomena. Test results show that the simulated breakdown probability curve (parameter tuning using Next Generation Simulation vehicular trajectories) fits with the empirical breakdown probability curve that is estimated by Performance Measurement System (PeMS) data. This indicates that this new model can account for the probability of breakdown phenomena and help us set an appropriate inflow rate so as to void breakdown and meanwhile maintain a high road capacity.
Spontaneous phase transition from free flow to synchronized flow in traffic on a single-lane highway

Abstract:Traffic flow complexity comes from the car-following and lane-changing behavior. Based on empirical data for individual vehicle speeds and time headways measured on a single-lane highway section, we have studied the traffic flow properties induced by pure car-following behavior. We have found that a spontaneous sudden drop in velocity could happen in a platoon of vehicles when the velocity of the leading vehicle is quite high (~70 km/h). In contrast, when the velocity of the leading vehicle in a platoon slows down, such a spontaneous sudden drop of velocity has not been observed. Our finding indicates that traffic breakdown on a single-lane road might be a phase transition from free flow to synchronized flow (F→S transition). We have found that the flow rate within the emergent synchronized flow can be either smaller or larger than the flow rate in the free flow within which the synchronized flow propagates. Our empirical findings support Kerner's three-phase theory in which traffic breakdown is associated with an F→S transition.
Empirical Features of Spontaneous and Induced Traffic Breakdowns in Free Flow at Highway Bottlenecks

Abstract:Based on an empirical study of real field traffic data measured in 1996--2014 through road detectors installed on German freeways, we reveal physical features of empirical nuclei for spontaneous traffic breakdown in free flow at highway bottlenecks. It is shown that the source of a nucleus for traffic breakdown is the solely difference between empirical spontaneous and induced traffic breakdowns at a highway bottleneck. Microscopic traffic simulations with a stochastic traffic flow model in the framework of three-phase theory explain the empirical findings. It turns out that in the most cases, a nucleus for empirical spontaneous traffic breakdown occurs through an interaction of one of waves in free flow with an empirical permanent speed disturbance localized at a highway bottleneck. The wave is a localized structure in free flow, in which the total flow rate is larger and the speed averaged across the highway is smaller than outside the wave. The waves in free flow appear due to oscilations in the percentage of slow vehicles; these waves propagate with the average speed of slow vehicles in free flow (about 85--88 km/h for German highways). Any of the waves exhibits a two-dimensional asymmetric spatiotemporal structure: Wave's characteristics are different in different highway lanes.

Microscopic theory of spatial-temporal congested traffic patterns at highway bottlenecks

Abstract:A microscopic theory of spatial-temporal congested traffic patterns at highway bottlenecks due to on-ramps, merge bottlenecks (a reduction of highway lanes), and off-ramps is presented. The basic postulate of three-phase traffic theory is used, which claims that homogeneous (in space and time) model solutions (steady states) of synchronized flow cover a two dimensional region in the flow-density plane [B. S. Kerner, Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 3797 (1998); Trans. Res. Rec. 1678, 160 (1999)]. Phase transitions leading to diverse congested patterns, pattern evolution, and pattern nonlinear features have been found. Diagrams of congested patterns, i.e., regions of the pattern emergence dependent on traffic demand, have been derived. Diverse effects of metastability with respect to the pattern formation have been found. The microscopic theory allows us to explain the main empirical pattern features at on-ramps and off-ramps which have recently been found [B. S. Kerner, Phys. Rev. E 65, 046138 (2002)]. (i) Rather than moving jams, synchronized flow first occurs at bottlenecks if the flow rate is slowly increasing. Wide moving jams can spontaneously occur only in synchronized flow. (ii) General patterns (GP) and synchronized flow patterns (SP) can spontaneously emerge at the bottlenecks. There can be the widening SP (WSP), the moving SP (MSP), and the localized SP. (iii) At on-ramps cases of "weak" and "strong" congestion should be distinguished. In contrast to weak congestion, under strong congestion the flow rate in synchronized flow in GP reaches a limit flow rate, the frequency of the moving jam emergence reaches a maximum, i.e., the GP characteristics under strong congestion do not depend on traffic demand. (iv) At the off-ramp GP with weak congestion occur. (v) A study of the pattern formation on a highway with two bottlenecks shows that diverse expanded patterns can occur, which cover both bottlenecks. SP first emerged at the downstream bottleneck can be caught at the upstream bottleneck (the catch effect). MSP, WSP, or wide moving jams first emerged at the downstream bottleneck induce diverse patterns at the upstream bottleneck. The onset of congestion at the upstream bottleneck can lead to an intensification of congestion at the downstream bottleneck. This causes a change in the pattern type and/or the pattern features.
Order parameter model for unstable multilane traffic flow

Abstract:We discuss a phenomenological approach to the description of unstable vehicle motion on multilane highways that explains in a simple way the observed sequence of the phase transitions "free flow -> synchronized motion -> jam" as well as the hysteresis in the transition "free flow <-> synchronized motion". We introduce a new variable called order parameter that accounts for possible correlations in the vehicle motion at different lanes. So, it is principally due to the "many-body" effects in the car interaction, which enables us to regard it as an additional independent state variable of traffic flow. Basing on the latest experimental data (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="cond-mat/9905216" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/cond-mat/9905216">cond-mat/9905216</a>) we assume that these correlations are due to a small group of "fast" drivers. Taking into account the general properties of the driver behavior we write the governing equation for the order parameter. In this context we analyze the instability of homogeneous traffic flow manifesting itself in both of the mentioned above phase transitions where, in addition, the transition "synchronized motion -> jam" also exhibits a similar hysteresis. Besides, the jam is characterized by the vehicle flows at different lanes being independent of one another. We specify a certain simplified model in order to study the general features of the car cluster self-formation under the phase transition "free flow <-> synchronized motion". In particular, we show that the main local parameters of the developed cluster are determined by the state characteristics of vehicle motion only.

Macroscopic Simulation of Widely Scattered Synchronized Traffic States

Abstract:Recently, a phase transition to synchronized congested traffic has been observed in empirical highway data [B. S. Kerner and H. Rehborn, Phys. Rev. Lett. 79, 4030 (1997)]. This hysteretic transition has been described by a non-local, gas-kinetic-based traffic model [D. Helbing and M. Treiber, Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 3042 (1998)] that, however, did not display the wide scattering of synchronized states. Here, it is shown that the latter can be reproduced by a mixture of different vehicle types like cars and trucks. The simulation results are in good agreement with Dutch highway data.

Criterion for traffic phases in single vehicle data and empirical test of a microscopic three-phase traffic theory

Abstract:Based on empirical and numerical microscopic analyses, the physical nature of a qualitatively different behaviour of the wide moving jam phase in comparison with the synchronized flow phase—microscopic traffic flow interruption within the wide moving jam phase—is found. A microscopic criterion for distinguishing the synchronized flow and wide moving jam phases in single vehicle data measured at a single freeway location is presented. Based on this criterion, empirical microscopic classification of different local congested traffic states is performed. Simulations made show that the microscopic criterion and macroscopic spatiotemporal objective criteria lead to the same identification of the synchronized flow and wide moving jam phases in congested traffic. Microscopic models in the context of three-phase traffic theory have been tested based on the microscopic criterion for the phases in congested traffic. It is found that microscopic three-phase traffic models can explain both microscopic and macroscopic empirical congested pattern features. It is obtained that microscopic frequency distributions for vehicle speed difference as well as fundamental diagrams and speed correlation functions can depend on the spatial co-ordinate considerably. It turns out that microscopic optimal velocity (OV) functions and time headway distributions are not necessarily qualitatively different, even if local congested traffic states are qualitatively different. The reason for this is that important spatiotemporal features of congested traffic patterns are lost in these as well as in many other macroscopic and microscopic traffic characteristics, which are widely used as the empirical basis for a test of traffic flow models, specifically, cellular automata traffic flow models.
Interpreting the Wide Scattering of Synchronized Traffic Data by Time Gap Statistics

Abstract:Based on the statistical evaluation of experimental single-vehicle data, we propose a quantitative interpretation of the erratic scattering of flow-density data in synchronized traffic flows. A correlation analysis suggests that the dynamical flow-density data are well compatible with the so-called jam line characterizing fully developed traffic jams, if one takes into account the variation of their propagation speed due to the large variation of the netto time gaps (the inhomogeneity of traffic flow). The form of the time gap distribution depends not only on the density, but also on the measurement cross section: The most probable netto time gap in congested traffic flow upstream of a bottleneck is significantly increased compared to uncongested freeway sections. Moreover, we identify different power-law scaling laws for the relative variance of netto time gaps as a function of the sampling size. While the exponent is -1 in free traffic corresponding to statistically independent time gaps, the exponent is about -2/3 in congested traffic flow because of correlations between queued vehicles.

Failure of classical traffic flow theories: Stochastic highway capacity and automatic driving

Abstract:In a mini-review [Physica A {\bf 392} (2013) 5261--5282] it has been shown that classical traffic flow theories and models failed to explain empirical traffic breakdown -- a phase transition from metastable free flow to synchronized flow at highway bottlenecks. The main objective of this mini-review is to study the consequence of this failure of classical traffic-flow theories for an analysis of empirical stochastic highway capacity as well as for the effect of automatic driving vehicles and cooperative driving on traffic flow. To reach this goal, we show a deep connection between the understanding of empirical stochastic highway capacity and a reliable analysis of automatic driving vehicles in traffic flow. With the use of simulations in the framework of three-phase traffic theory, a probabilistic analysis of the effect of automatic driving vehicles on a mixture traffic flow consisting of a random distribution of automatic driving and manual driving vehicles has been made. We have found that the parameters of automatic driving vehicles can either decrease or increase the probability of traffic breakdown. The increase in the probability of traffic breakdown, i.e., the deterioration of the performance of the traffic system can occur already at a small percentage (about 5$\%$) of automatic driving vehicles. The increase in the probability of traffic breakdown through automatic driving vehicles can be realized, even if any platoon of automatic driving vehicles satisfies condition for string stability.

Theory of self-organized traffic at light signal

Abstract:Based on numerical simulations of a three-phase traffic flow model, a probabilistic theory of traffic at the light signal is developed. We have found that very complex spatiotemporal self-organized phenomena determine features of city traffic. We have revealed that the breakdown of {\it green wave} in a city is initiated by the emergence of a moving synchronized flow pattern (MSP) within the green wave. It turns out that a sequence of F$\rightarrow$S$\rightarrow$J transitions (F -- free flow, S -- synchronized flow, J -- moving queue) lead to traffic breakdown at the light signal. Both spontaneous and induced breakdowns of the green wave have been found. From a study of a variety of scenarios for arrival traffic, we have found that there are the infinite number of capacities of traffic at the light signal, which are in a capacity range between a minimum capacity and maximum capacity; each of the capacities gives a flow rate at which under-saturated traffic is in a metastable state with respect to the transition to over-saturated traffic. The maximum capacity depends crucially on a time-dependence of the flow rate: The larger the number of vehicles that arrive the light signal during the green phase, the larger the maximum capacity.

Abstract:It is understood that congestion in traffic can be interpreted in terms of the instability of the equation of dynamic motion. The evolution of a traffic system from an unstable or metastable state to a globally stable state bears a strong resemblance to the phase transition in thermodynamics. In this work, we explore the underlying physics of the traffic system, by examining closely the physical properties and mathematical constraints of the phase transitions therein. By using a mesoscopic approach, one entitles the catastrophe model the same physical content as in the Landau's theory, and uncovers its close connections to the instability of the equation of motion and to the transition between different traffic states. In addition to the one-dimensional configuration space, we generalize our discussions to the higher-dimensional case, where the observed temporal oscillation in traffic flow data is attributed to the curl of a vector field. We exhibit that our model can reproduce the main features of the observed fundamental diagram including the inverse-λ shape and the wide scattering of congested traffic data. When properly parameterized, the main feature of the data can be reproduced reasonably well either in terms of the oscillating congested traffic or in terms of the synchronized flow.
Microscopic Statistical Characterisation of the Congested Traffic Flow and Some Salient Empirical Features

Abstract:We present large scale and detailed analysis of the microscopic empirical data of the traffic flow, focusing on the non-linear interactions between the vehicles when the traffic is congested. By implementing a "renormalisation" procedure that averages over relatively unimportant factors, we extract the effective dependence of the acceleration on the vehicle headway, velocity and relative velocity, that characterises not just a few vehicles but the traffic system as a whole. Several interesting features of the detailed vehicle-to-vehicle interactions are revealed, including the stochastic distribution of human responses, relative importance of non-linear terms in different density regimes, symmetric response to the relative velocity, and the insensitivity of the acceleration to the velocity within a certain headway and velocity range. The latter leads to a multitude of steady-states without a fundamental diagram, showing strong evidence of the "synchronised phase", substantiated with additional microscopic details. We discuss the richness of the available data for the understanding of the human driving behaviours, and its usefulness in construction and calibration of both deterministic and stochastic microscopic traffic models.

EVALUATION OF WOUND HEALING ACTIONS OF HOSLUNDIA OPPOSITA VAHL , ANTHOCLEISTA NOBILIS G . DON . AND BALANITES AEGYPTIACA

Abstract:Hoslundia opposita, Anthocleista nobilis and Balani tes aegyptiaca are widely used ethnomedicinally in Ghana in the treatment of skin diseases. In this context, antimicrobial potential of the three plan t species against a wide range of microorganisms was studied. To validate the ethnotherapeutic claims of these plants in skin diseases, in vivo wo und healing activity was studied, besides antioxidant activity to understand the mechanism of wound healing. Methanol extract of Hoslundia opposita showed significant antibacterial activity ag inst all bacteria tested including some resistant strains of Staphyloccocus aureus, with MIC ranging between 64-256 μg/ml. The results show that all three extracts have potent wound healing activi ty as evident from the wound contraction, increased tensile strength and hydroxyproline content . The results also indicated that the three plant species possess potent antioxidant activity by inhi biting lipid peroxidation, bleaching DPPH radical and protecting against oxidant injury to fibroblast cells.
Effect of Stochastic Transition in the Fundamental Diagram of Traffic Flow

Abstract:In this work, we propose an alternative stochastic model for the fundamental diagram of traffic flow with minimal number of parameters. Our approach is based on a mesoscopic viewpoint of the traffic system in terms of the dynamics of vehicle speed transitions. A key feature of the present approach lies in its stochastic nature which makes it possible to study not only the flow-concentration relation, namely, the fundamental diagram, but also its uncertainty, namely, the variance of the fundamental diagram —an important characteristic in the observed traffic flow data. It is shown that in the simplified versions of the model consisting of only a few speed states, analytic solutions for both quantities can be obtained, which facilitate the discussion of the corresponding physical content. We also show that the effect of vehicle size can be included into the model by introducing the maximal congestion density k_max. By making use of this parameter, the free flow region and congested flow region are naturally divided, and the transition is characterized by the capacity drop at the maximum of the flow-concentration relation. The model parameters are then adjusted to the observed traffic flow on the I-80 Freeway Dataset in the San Francisco area from the NGSIM program, where both the fundamental diagram and its variance are reasonably reproduced. Despite its simplicity, we argue that the current model provides an alternative description for the fundamental diagram and its uncertainty in the study of traffic flow.

Abstract:Most of the conventional cellular automaton (CA) traffic flow models have two shortcomings: unlimited deceleration capabilities and incapability of reproducing the synchronized flow in the three-phase traffic flow theory. Based on an original deceleration CA model that emphasizes limited mechanical capabilities and human overreaction as the origin of congested traffic states, this paper proposes a new deceleration CA model where the slow-to-start rules are incorporated. For periodic boundary conditions, one also finds that the present model can reproduce well the three different phases of traffic flow (free flow, synchronized traffic flow, wide moving jam) as well as two first-order phase transitions (the transitions from free flow to synchronized flow and from synchronized flow to wide moving jam) among them. Compared to the original deceleration CA model, one notes that the phase transition from the synchronized flow to wide moving jam becomes distinguishable. Furthermore, the present model can reliably reproduce most empirical findings including synchronized flow with different slopes, the so-called pinch effect, and the time-headway distribution of free flow and so on. Importantly, the synchronized flow with different slopes is supported by spatiotemporal diagrams and the statistical distribution of velocity and so on. For open boundary conditions, the present model can reproduce the spatiotemporal diagrams of well-known five patterns including moving synchronized flow pattern, localized synchronized flow pattern, widening synchronized flow pattern, dissolving general pattern and general pattern.

Abstract:In this work, we show that the inverse-λ shape in the fundamental diagram of traffic flow can be produced dynamically by a simple nonlinear mesoscopic model with stochastic noises. The proposed model is based on the gas-kinetic theory of the traffic system. In our approach, the nonlinearity leads to the coexistence of different traffic states. The scattering of the data is thus attributed to the noise terms introduced in the stochastic differential equations and the transition among the various traffic states. Most importantly, the observed inverse-λ shape and the associated sudden jump of physical quantities arise due to the effect of stochastic noises on the stability of the system. The model parameters are calibrated, and a qualitative agreement is obtained between the data and the numerical simulations.
