Abstract:The development of rural settlements is contingent on whether the rural functioning and land use suitability are considered in anticipated trajectories. However, rural multifunctionality has often been neglected in existing studies of rural spatial restructuring, especially within a heterogeneous rural landscape. This study proposed an integrated approach that links village functionality and land suitability at different scales to design targeted strategies for rural settlement restructuring. An empirical investigation was conducted in Shengzhou City, a rural region with diverse geomorphic features. The transformation process and spatial pattern of rural housing lands in the study area varied markedly across time and space. Our results showed that multiple physical, socio-economic and institutional determinants jointly contribute to these diversified trends. Further, clustering methods and ecological niche models were adopted to illustrate current and potential niches of rural settlements at multiple levels. By considering the significant driving forces of rural development, combined with management orientation factors, we revealed five types of villages with different functions. Then, distinct rural spatial restructuring scenarios with policy guidelines were concluded. These findings also illustrate the potential utility of the proposed methodologies for rural spatial restructuring. We proposed that the application of ecological niche theory to rural spatial restructuring can enhance our knowledge of the changing social-ecological system and serve as a nexus between interdisciplinary perspectives.
Spatio-temporal Evolution of Coupling Coordination Degree between Urbanization and Tourism Industry: A Case Study of Rural Revitalization Strategy of the Wuling Mountain Area in Central China

Abstract:China is currently at a critical juncture in implementing the rural revitalization strategy, with urbanization and tourism development as crucial components. This study investigates 41 counties (cities) in the Wuling Mountain area of central China, constructing an evaluation system for the coordinated development of these two sectors. The coupling coordination degree is calculated using a combination weighting method and the coupling coordination degree model. Spatio-temporal evolution characteristics are analyzed through spatial autocorrelation, while the geographic detector explores the driving factors of spatial variation. The findings reveal a significant increase in coupling coordination between urbanization and tourism, transitioning towards a coordinated phase. Spatially, urbanization and tourism exhibit positive correlations, with high-value clusters in the southeast and northwest and low-value clusters in the south. The geographical detector identifies industrial factors as the most critical drivers of spatial variation. This study offers novel insights into the dynamics of urbanization and tourism, contributing to the broader literature by providing practical implications for regional planning and sustainable development. The results are relevant to the Wuling Mountain area and serve as a reference for similar regions globally. However, the study has certain limitations, such as regional specificity and data availability, which should be considered in the context of this research.
Optimization of rural settlements based on rural revitalization elements and rural residents’ social mobility: A case study of a township in western China

Abstract:Rural settlements are spatial carriers of rural social and economic activities. The optimization of rural settlements is of great significance to comprehensively promote rural revitalization. Considering that the optimization of rural settlements is a systematic engineering of the optimal allocation of rural revitalization elements and a social engineering of rural residents’ willingness, this paper explores the optimization of rural settlements based on the elements of rural revitalization and rural residents’ social mobility. After constructing the theoretical framework of the internal relationship among rural revitalization, rural residents’ social mobility and optimization of rural settlements, we evaluate the development vitality of rural settlements from the perspectives of industry, talent, culture, organization and ecology, and measure the network centrality of rural settlements based on rural residents’ social mobility. Moreover, we measure the coordination level of development vitality and network centrality to identify rural settlements’ optimization types. The level of the talent element is the lowest among the five revitalization elements. The rural settlements with high development vitality and network centrality are mainly distributed around the central town and near the traffic trunk lines. The rural settlements within the boundary of the expansion of urban construction land are classified as suburban integration, and the rural settlements with the characteristics of cultural relics or ethnic minorities are determined as characteristic protection. The remaining rural settlements are classified into three types (i.e., agglomeration and upgrading (high coordination), maintaining status quo (basic coordination), relocation and evacuation (endangered coordination)) according to the coordination level. Relocation and evacuation rural settlements are not suitable for villagers’ production and living and we encourage these villagers migrate to rural settlements that are more strongly connected in the residents’ social mobility network. Based on these findings, this paper provides a decision-making basis for rural planning and proposes an analytical framework for the optimization of rural settlements.

Abstract:The spatial system of rural residential areas is a key carrier to support the high-quality development of rural residential areas. The effective identification of the space quality and its coordinated characteristics of rural residential areas are helpful to provide scientific basis for rural revitalization. From the perspective of space, the high-quality development of rural residential area may be seen as a state of spatial coordination aiming at rural revitalization under the high-level development of material space and social space. Taking Ningjin County of Shandong Province as the research area, this paper discusses the quality characteristics of rural residential areas in plains areas through representative case studies. For this purpose, the quality of material space and social space of these areas, and their coordinated development patterns, are obtained using the entropy weight TOPSIS, the mutual exclusivity matrix, and the coordinate quadrant method. Finally, the paper provides an identification of barriers by the obstacle degree diagnosis model and then proposes some quality improvement strategies for rural revitalization. The results show that: (a) The quality of material space and social space of rural residential areas in Ningjin County are medium and high. (b) The coordinated development patterns of material-social space of rural residential areas in Ningjin County are characterized by medium-quality-led, low-quality second-class, high-quality less. (c) The obstacle factors of high-quality development of rural residential areas in Ningjin County are mainly reflected in the four dimensions of living space, production space, cultural space, and communication space. (d) Rural revitalization in Ningjin County can be achieved through the coordinated optimization of high-quality development patterns, the focused improvement of medium-quality development patterns, and the comprehensive consolidation of low-quality development.

Abstract:Rural regional system is a geographical perspective to understand rural development and land use change. Identifying the structure of rural regional system has been the key issue in rural geography. This paper proposed a multi-dimension analysis framework and developed "Pole–Field–Zone–Network" (PFZN) to identify the structure of rural regional system. Taking Yanchi County as a case, which is in farming pastoral ecotone northern China, we integrate geospatial analysis methods to identify the structure. The results show that the structure of Yanchi' rural regional system can be identified and divided into 23 rural revitalization poles, eight village-town spatial fields, and five rural development zones. This paper analyzes the PFZN structure of rural regional system, which cascade connects taking the development poles as the nodes, fields as the influence domain, and zones as the type of control area, and according to the regionalization results for the rural development zone, the corresponding implications of revitalization are given. It is proposed to promote the construction of central villages and towns with revitalization as the core, optimize the spatial structure and layout based on filed and zone, and build a multi-functional network structure. Then, the main function-oriented zoning for the rural areas, as well as dominant type classification and principal purpose classification of the rural regional system should also be feasible strategies for policymakers and rural revitalization planners to achieve sustainable rural development. We try to fill the gap in quantitative identification on the structure of rural regional system to enrich the research regarding the theoretical model by exploring the interaction of human-environment relationship, which has significance for the rural revitalization and sustainable development.

NEONATAL GASTROINTESTINAL PERFORATIONS : A 7-YEAR SINGLE CENTER EXPERIENCE AT A TERTIARY NEONATAL INTENSIVE CARE UNIT IN TURKEY

Abstract:We aimed to present our experience on the gastrointestinal (GI) perforations and the factors affecting the outcome. A retrospective study carried out at a tertiary neonatal intensive care unit. A total of 38 neonates with GI perforation managed in our neonatal intensive care unit during 2005 to 2011 were included into the study. The patients were grouped as necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) and non-NEC patients. Twenty four of 38 infants (63.2%) were premature. Non-NEC conditions were most common cause of the perforation (57.9%). Twelve cases were managed with peritoneal drainage alone. Surgical repair without conservative approach was performed in 19 patients, while seven of the patients underwent to surgical intervention after decompression by the percutaneous drainage. The overall mortality rate was 28.9%. It were 43.7% and 18.1% in NEC and non-NEC group, respectively (p>0.05). The mortality rate in small bowel perforation and colorectal perforation was 30.7% and 22.2%, respectively (p>0.05). All patients with gastric perforation survived. Non-NEC conditions were common cause of GI perforations. Although some patients could be managed with conservative approach, surgical exploration is still the main management model. The prognosis of the gastric perforation was good; however, the prognosis of small bowel and colorectal perforation was poor.

Abstract:In China, rural tourism development constitutes a significant strategy for integrating and utilizing rural resources to achieve rural prosperity. However, reconciling the interests of villagers, government entities, and market actors is difficult in practice, leading to potential pitfalls such as the erosion of rural characteristics, villagers' rights, and sustainability. The establishment of rural communities in China's current rural areas can effectively resolve conflicts of interest among diverse stakeholders and address bottlenecks in rural tourism development. However, there is still a lack of theoretical and practical exploration of the maintenance and value realization of rural communities. This study explores the impact of innovative strategies employed during rural tourism development on community growth through a case study of the village of Baifeng in the Anhui province. The results indicate that fostering a sense of community among stakeholders and supporting marginalized groups are the most significant values in the development of rural communities. In practice, effective collaboration and communication among stakeholders, mutual acceptance and conflict resolution, and the development of community emotions/consciousness can help rural communities achieve high-quality construction. This study offers valuable insights into the theoretical advancement of rural communities and represents an excellent case study for the research on rural revitalization and common prosperity.

Abstract:The development and integration of industries have promoted economic growth and gradually become an important perspective to understand the country’s modernized construction. The cultural industry and the tourism industry are naturally coupled, which is an important part of the process of industrial integration. In addition, the country’s drive towards modernization needs to improve the overall level of industrial integration, and rural revitalization is one of the key links to this. Therefore, to explore the relationship between the integration of cultural tourism industry and rural revitalization, this study collected the panel data of 31 provincial-level regions in China from 2005 to 2021. Based on the entropy method and the coupling coordination degree model, this study constructs an evaluation index system, including cultural industry, tourism industry, the integration of cultural tourism industry, new urbanization, and rural revitalization, and obtains the comprehensive scores of each. Furthermore, the study discusses the path selection and future development direction of rural revitalization through the integration of a cultural tourism industry. The conclusions are drawn as follows: (1) The development of the cultural and tourism industries can significantly promote the development of new urbanization and rural revitalization; (2) the integration of cultural tourism industry has a positive effect on rural revitalization; (3) new urbanization plays a partial mediating role in the relationship between the integration of cultural tourism industry and rural revitalization; (4) new urbanization has a masking effect on the influence of the integration of cultural tourism industry on rural revitalization; and (5) the extent of these effects varies by region. Finally, this study not only deepens the understanding of rural revitalization from the perspective of industrial development and integration, but also provides an empirical basis for the country, local governments, and enterprises to promote rural revitalization.

Research on Rural Typology Based on the Symbiotic Model of Rural Revitalization and Basic Public Services

Abstract:The basic unit of rural revitalization is the village. Rural revitalization can be comprehensively promoted by using rural typology as an instrument for rural zoning planning, which is a significant factor. This study clarified the relationship between rural revitalization and basic public services, constructed evaluation index systems, and analyzed the symbiotic mode. The comprehensive development level and the symbiotic mode were incorporated to determine the type of village. The results showed the following: (1) The thriving industry and affluent life of Tangfang Town obviously contributed to its rural revitalization; the achievement of basic environmental improvement was eminent. (2) There are differences in the comprehensive development level of rural revitalization and basic public services among administrative villages, with an overall trend of "high in the north and low in the south", corresponding to the industrial layout of "north industry and south agriculture" in Tangfang Town. (3) The symbiosis coefficients of all the administrative villages in Tangfang Town were between 0 and 0.5, and there was a positive symmetric mutualism relationship overall, indicating that basic public services have a significant impact and can effectively promote the process of rural revitalization. (4) Villages in Tangfang Town are divided into five functional areas—the comprehensive coordination area, potential improvement area, restricted development area, unbalanced allocation area, and backward guarantee area—and various types of optimization development strategies are proposed. As one of the top 100 demonstration towns for rural revitalization in Shaanxi Province, Tangfang Town plays a leading and exemplary role. Within the context of rural revitalization strategies, solving the problem of how to realize differentiated development in the next five years has become urgent. This study aimed to effectively promote the process of rural revitalization, provide theoretical guidance for scientific development in Tangfang Town, and promote research ideas for other towns in China.

Abstract:Under China’s Rural Revitalization program, it is essential to accurately determine the prospects of revival or decay for the villages alongside specific goals and paths, which existing literature lacks a systematic coverage. Based on rural typology theories, this paper proposes an analytical framework to determine the type of village revitalization from the perspective of factor endowments. Utilizing five groups of 45 indicators characterizing the natural, socio-economic, and cultural endowments of villages, this paper applies the Self-Organizing Mapping neural network to cluster 2,388,579 natural villages in 48,322 townships across the nation into the four basic types of rural revitalization as directed by China’s Strategic Plan for Rural Revitalization (2018–2022): (1) Agglomerative Promotion, (2) Suburban Annexation, (3) Special Endowment-based Development, and (4) Out-migration and Relocation. The results of cluster analysis are spatially visualized to form a national rural revitalization zoning map at the township level, the first attempt to our knowledge. We conclude the paper with discussions on the revitalization paths of the various types of villages, particularly the seemingly gloomy prospect of 2/3 of the villages falling into the fourth category, and ways to interpret the deterministic nature of the conclusion. The paper expands the understanding of rural typology to a national scale with both innovative categorization processes and strong linkages to revitalization practices.

Abstract:<p>Rural spatial restructuring is regarded as an important method of achieving rural revitalization in China in recent years. With the spillover of leisure consumption demand in metropolitan areas, the rural spatial structure has undergone significant changes. To analyze the causal logic of rural spatial restructuring, this study constructs a tourism-driven rural spatial restructuring framework. Furthermore, GIS and participatory fieldwork are used to reveal the changing process of rural spatial restructuring. A case study of Qinggangshu Village shows that tourism-driven rural spatial restructuring is the result of internal and external forces, while land consolidation is highlighted as a direct way to trigger rural spatial restructuring, and rural tourism can accelerate land consolidation, and realize rural revitalization. However, for those villages without any resource endowment, simple land consolidation cannot improve the rural economy in a short period. Moreover, once rural spatial restructuring is completed, the rural economy and social culture will also be restructured. The framework demonstration results will provide a "road map" to rural spatial restructuring in metropolitan fringe areas and serve as a practical information resource for policy-makers. The driving factors of rural spatial restructuring are diverse at different stages. Therefore, the government should adopt a gradual management model, and systematically mobilize all forces to participate in rural construction to realize the sustainable development of rural areas.</p>

Abstract:In response to the challenges of rural chronic poverty caused by insufficient self-development ability, establishing a development model conducive to poverty alleviation and stimulating rural development potential have become core tasks of deepening rural revitalization. Resources and environment play an important role in invigorating rural vitality. Based on symbiosis theory, we have constructed a new conceptual framework to analyze dynamic performance of rural areas in population, industry and facilities, and dynamic constraints in resources and environment. Using an improved TOPSIS evaluation method and panel Tobit model, we have selected 106 rural revitalization model towns from Shandong province as research samples, empirically analyzed the performance of rural vitality and its resources and environment constraints, explored differences of rural vitality performance and vitality constraints of different village types, and put forward long-term mechanisms to maintain rural vitality. Results show that from 2012 to 2019, rural vitality of rural revitalization model towns in Shandong province was gradually improved, among which industrial development had contributed the most; agriculture-tourism towns are more dynamic than industrialized agriculture towns and characteristic agricultural towns. Through analysis of resources and environment constraints on rural vitality, we found that resources had the greatest impact on rural vitality, and the short-term constraints of total amount restriction on rural vitality were not obvious; binding force of ecological environment on rural vitality changed from weak to strong and increasingly became the bottleneck restricting rural vitality. We have further proposed a long-term mechanism to stimulate rural vitality from the aspects of promoting comprehensive utilization of rural residential land, strengthening concept of ecological priority and green development, taking the road of urban–rural integration, and promoting integrated development of rural industries.

Abstract:In China's pursuit of modernization, the government has introduced the rural revitalization strategy to combat rural decline, foster balanced urban–rural development, and reduce the urban–rural gap. Rural human settlements, as key components of this strategy, play a vital role. This paper examines the types and characteristics of human–earth relationships within rural settlements, emphasizing their significance. Using national land use and population census data, we analyze the spatiotemporal evolution of rural settlements at the county level, investigating landscape pattern changes, assessing the degree of coupling coordination between rural population and settlements, categorizing relationship types and features, and estimating the potential for remediation. Our findings reveal a growing trend in the scale of rural human settlements, particularly sourced from arable land, with significant expansions observed in the North China Plain and Northeast Plain, indicating potential for farmland reclamation and village consolidation. Landscape patterns of rural human settlements exhibit increased fragmentation, complex shapes, and aggregation. We categorize the utilization of rural human settlements into two types, each with four distinct features: human–land coordination is observed in regions characterized by either a higher rural population and larger rural settlement areas, or lower rural population and smaller rural settlement areas. Human–land trade-offs are evident in areas where there is either a higher rural population and smaller rural settlement areas, or lower rural population and larger rural settlement areas. This provides valuable insights for the Chinese government's context-specific implementation of the rural revitalization strategy. It also serves as an experiential reference for the governance of rural human settlements in other developing countries.

Abstract:Recent years have witnessed an increasing focus on rural revitalization (RR). In order to explore the current status and the coordinated growth of different aspects of RR, this paper first constructs a new 5E framework with a comprehensive index system; then analyzes the overall development status (ODS) and the coordinated development status of 5 dimensions (CDS) of 30 regions in China from 2006 to 2020 temporally and spatially with entropy weight and the technique for order preference by similarity to the ideal solution method; thirdly forecasts the CDS in the next four years and proposed targeted and differentiated development suggestions. Some key results are: (1) ODS was relatively stable with significant spatial variations. (2) CDS of the five dimensions fluctuated relatively mildly, and villages of the coastal areas were higher than those in the inland areas. (3) CDS will be generally similar to the past temporally and spatially in the future. (4) Different regions should take targeted and feasible measures to achieve benign coordinated growth among dimensions of RR, and the national authority should take supportive actions comprehensively.

Abstract:The rural revitalization strategy is the main strategy proposed by the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China. The Central Rural Work Conference held at the end of 2020 emphasized that after the comprehensive victory in the fight against poverty, the focus of China’s work on the “three rural areas” had shifted historically, i.e., to comprehensively promote Rural revitalisation. The study of the comprehensive promotion of rural revitalization in the new development stage is of great theoretical value and practical significance to the comprehensive construction of a modern socialist country. The state has put forward new requirements of revitalization and construction of rural areas from top to bottom. This article briefly analyzes the problems faced by rural revival based on the perspective of ecological civilization. It takes Qiaoshi Town as an example to explain the main methods of promoting rural regeneration from the perspective of ecological civilization. I hope this article’s research content can bring certain value and enlightenment to the activation of rural ecosystems in various places.

Abstract:China’s rural area is vast, and in the process of diversified urbanization, the trend of rural diversity and differentiation will continue. To this end, the Strategic Plan for Rural Revitalization (2018–2022) in China specifically puts forward the work requirements of “strengthening the guidance of planning and focusing on implementing policies based on categories.” Based on POI data in 2020 and gravity model, this paper analyzes the geo-spatial interactions and main economic activities of 1183 rural settlements in a representative city called Yangzhou in Yangtze River Delta, and gives a classification of rural types in this region and an evaluation of the potential of rural revitalization of different categories. The research shows that there is still a great space for rural development in Yangzhou, but there is a problem of unbalanced village development, and the potential of rural revitalization is positively correlated with the relationship between policy and rural location. Through field visits to rural areas with potential for revitalization, it is found that they are mainly affected by urbanization and lack of labor and technical support, as well as lack of attention to social aspects in regional planning. In combination with the guiding ideology of the Strategic Plan for Rural Revitalization (2018–2022), this paper proposes that regional universities should play an important role in the process of realizing regional rural revitalization, and should carry out rural social practice and guide the local employment of college students. This way can realize the popularization of knowledge and make up for the lack of social research in the implementation of national planning and construction.

Abstract:As an essential support for rural revitalization and global tourism strategies, rural tourism has a lot to do in the dual-cycle development pattern. Based on the first and second batch of crucial rural tourism villages in the country, the nearest neighbor index, geographic concentration index, Gini coefficient, standard deviation ellipse, nuclear density and other methods are used to analyze their spatial distribution types, spatial balance, spatial pattern and evolution. Then, the factors influencing the distribution differences are analyzed by using the tools of geographic connection rate and buffer zone. From a configuration perspective, QCA is used to explore the development model of crucial rural tourism villages. The results show that: 1China’s rural tourism crucial villages along the Hu Huanyong line show a condensed distribution characteristic of “sparsely located in the southeast and sparsely northwest”. The distribution within the provinces is weakly concentrated and the spatial imbalance is prominent. Morover, the spatial pattern is evident from the Northeast to the Southwest and shows the insense evolution trend. 2The crucial rural tourism villages are spatially formed with the dual-core radiation and multi-regional structural features centered on the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, Yangtze River Delta, and supplemented by several sub-high-density areas such as Guanzhong, Sichuan, Chongqing, Guizhou, and Pearl River Delta, and finally formed the radiation pattern of urban agglomerations-central cities-crucial rural tourism villages. 3Natural geography, source market, transportation environment, economic level, and endowment of tourism resources are important factors that affect the spatial distribution of crucial rural tourism villages. 4There are three main development models of crucial rural tourism villages in China: source market-driven, traffic-oriented and scenic-radiant.

Abstract:Rural communities can be conceptualized as spatial organisms interconnected by optimized resource utilization systems. Investigating the efficient utilization of rural resources and spatial construction methods grounded in resource metabolism is a pivotal step toward achieving the ecological transformation of rural spaces. This paper examined rural settlements in the Shandong Plain as a case study, exploring the relationships among three scales: village, neighborhoods, and courtyards. This analysis was based on elucidating the interaction mechanisms between "space and resource" and the integration of key resources and spatial elements. From the perspective of resource circulation and metabolism, this study aimed to elucidate the equilibrium of each resource element within three resource metabolism subsystems: the agricultural production system (core element), the ecological technology system (technological link), and the human life system (spatial carrier) in Shandong Plain's villages, considering general climatic conditions. To achieve this, this research utilized the resource production volume, the utilization and transformation volume of resource metabolism technology facilities per unit area, and the average per capita resource consumption as fundamental measurement units. The concept of a rationing relationship is introduced to clarify resource allocation. Combining the aforementioned research on spatial resource metabolism in ecological villages in Shandong Province with the material flow analysis method, this study constructed a bottom–up spatial model of resource metabolism at three scales, courtyards, neighborhoods, and villages, under various resource metabolism scenarios. This study is anticipated to significantly contribute to the theoretical understanding of rural habitat environments, offering novel methods and perspectives for constructing ecological rural settlements.
