Abstract:During the past 20 years,the pathway of chlorophyll breakdown has been deepinvestigated,especially the structure elucidation of nonfluorescent chlorophyll catabolites which is crucial for the cognizance of chlorophyll breakdown pathway.The effects of some catabolic enzymes involved in the chlorophyll degradation have been further demonstrated and part of the pathway is revised and completed.Moreover,the physiologic roles of chlorophyll catabolites enrich the significance of chlorophyll breakdown which is not only a prerequisite to detoxify the phototoxic pigments catabolites,but also is relevant to the viability of senescent leaves and ripening frui.

Abstract:Leaf senescence happen in the late stage of leaf development.During the process of leaf senescence,chlorophyll and other macromolecules are degraded,photosynthetic capacity declines and nutrients of the degraded products tissues are transferred from senescing to young tissues and reproductive organs.Leaf senescence is influenced by the leaf developmental stage and environmental stresses,like dark,drought,salinity,low temperature,ozone,nutrient deficiency and pathogen infection,etc.Reactive oxygen species(ROS) accumulates during leaf senescence with reduced antioxidase activities(SOD,CAT and APX).Unfavorable conditions might accelerate and lead to a premature senescence,inducing expression of senescence associated genes(SAGs),speeding up the plant maturation and decreasing the crop yield.The measures utilized in production practice,i.e.nitrogen management,plant intensity,and chemical regulator are involved in the process.In this review,we summarized the advancement in this field.
Integrated examination of the transcriptome and metabolome of the gene expression response and metabolite accumulation in soybean seeds for seed storability under aging stress

Abstract:Soybean quality and production are determined by seed viability. A seed's capacity to sustain germination via dry storage is known as its seed life. Thus, one of the main objectives for breeders is to preserve genetic variety and gather germplasm resources. However, seed quality and germplasm preservation have become significant obstacles. In this study, four artificially simulated aging treatment groups were set for 0, 24, 72, and 120 hours. Following an aging stress treatment, the transcriptome and metabolome data were compared in two soybean lines with notable differences in seed vigor-R31 (aging sensitive) and R80 (aging tolerant). The results showed that 83 (38 upregulated and 45 downregulated), 30 (19 upregulated and 11 downregulated), 90 (52 upregulated and 38 downregulated), and 54 (25 upregulated and 29 downregulated) DEGs were differentially expressed, respectively. A total of 62 (29 upregulated and 33 downregulated), 94 (49 upregulated and 45 downregulated), 91 (53 upregulated and 38 downregulated), and 135 (111 upregulated and 24 downregulated) differential metabolites accumulated. Combining the results of transcriptome and metabolome investigations demonstrated that the difference between R31 and R80 responses to aging stress was caused by genes related to phenylpropanoid metabolism pathway, which is linked to the seed metabolite caffeic acid. According to this study's preliminary findings, the aging-resistant line accumulated more caffeic acid than the aging-sensitive line, which improved its capacity to block lipoxygenase (LOX) activity. An enzyme activity inhibition test was used to demonstrate the effect of caffeic acid. After soaking seeds in 1 mM caffeic acid (a LOX inhibitor) for 6 hours and artificially aging them for 24 hours, the germination rates of the R31 and R80 seeds were enhanced. In conclusion, caffeic acid has been shown to partially mitigate the negative effects of soybean seed aging stress and to improve seed vitality. This finding should serve as a theoretical foundation for future research on the aging mechanism of soybean seeds.
NYEs/SGRs-mediated Chlorophyll Degradation is Critical for Detoxification During Seed Maturation in Arabidopsis

Abstract:SummaryIn the seed industry, chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence is often used as a major non‐invasive reporter of seed maturation and quality. Breakdown of Chl is a proactive process during the late stage of seed maturation, as well as during leaf senescence and fruit ripening. However, the biological significance of this process is still unclear. NYE1 and NYE2 are Mg‐dechelatases, catalyzing the first rate‐limiting step of Chl a degradation. Loss‐of‐function of both NYE1 and NYE2 not only results in a nearly complete retention of Chl during leaf senescence, but also produces green seeds in Arabidopsis. In this study, we showed that Chl retention in the nye1 nye2 double‐mutant caused severe photo‐damage to maturing seeds. Upon prolonged light exposure, green seeds of nye1 nye2 gradually bleached out and eventually lost their germination capacity. This organ‐specific photosensitive phenotype is likely due to an over‐accumulation of free Chl, which possesses photosensitizing properties and causes a burst of reactive oxygen species upon light exposure. As expected, a similar, albeit much milder, photosensitive phenotype was observed in the seeds of d1 d2, a green‐seed mutant defective in NYE/SGR orthologous genes in soybean. Taken together, our data suggest that efficient NYEs‐mediated Chl degradation is critical for detoxification during seed maturation.
Transcriptome Analysis of Gene Expression Patterns Potentially Associated with Premature Senescence in Nicotiana tabacum L

Abstract:Senescence affects the remobilization of nutrients and adaption of the plant to the environment. Combined stresses can result in premature senescence in plants which exist in the field. In this study, transcriptomic analysis was performed on mature leaves and leaves in three stages of premature senescence to understand the molecular mechanism. With progressive premature senescence, a declining chlorophyll (chl) content and an increasing malonaldehyde (MDA) content were observed, while plasmolysis and cell nucleus pyknosis occurred, mitochondria melted, thylakoid lamellae were dilated, starch grains in chloroplast decreased, and osmiophilic granules increased gradually. Moreover, in total 69 common differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in three stages of premature senescing leaves were found, which were significantly enriched in summarized Gene Ontology (GO) terms of membrane-bounded organelle, regulation of cellular component synthesis and metabolic and biosynthetic processes. The Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis suggested that the plant hormone signal transduction pathway was significantly enriched. The common DEGs and four senescence-related pathways, including plant hormone signal transduction, porphyrin and chlorophyll metabolism, carotenoid biosynthesis, and regulation of autophagy were selected to be discussed further. This work aimed to provide potential genes signaling and modulating premature senescence as well as the possible dynamic network of gene expression patterns for further study.
Identification of Candidate Genes Involved in Fatty Acids Degradation at the Late Maturity Stage in Brassica Napus Based on Transcriptomic Analysis

Abstract:In rapeseed (Brassica napus), the reduction of seed oil content (SOC) at the late maturity stage is widely observed in most rapeseed cultivars. However, the molecular mechanism relevant to the SOC reduction (i.e. fatty acids degradation) at the late stage is not clearly understood. In this study, we investigated dynamic accumulation of the SOC in the developing seeds of a cultivar Zhongyou-511 using gas chromatography and changes of transcriptomic profile in the seeds at different stages using RNA-seq respectively. The total SOC of Zhongyou-511 was decreased by 14% at 55 days after pollination (DAP) in comparison with that at 40 DAP. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that the majority of genes involved in fatty acids biosynthesis as well as β-oxidation for lipids degradation were significantly up-regulated at the late maturity stage, including BnaA09g32380D and BnaC08g23150D homologous genes of acyl-CoA oxidase 4 and BnaA03g15290D and BnaC04g11470D homologous genes of 3-ketoacyl-CoA thiolase 2. These results indicate that the increased expression of candidate genes in the β-oxidation pathway maybe cause the SOC reduction at the late maturity stage. The current study would be helpful for increasing our knowledge on the molecular mechanism of the SOC reduction and for utilizing candidate genes for high SOC breeding in rapeseed.
Full-Length Transcriptome Sequencing Reveals the Molecular Mechanism of Metasequoia glyptostroboides Seed Responding to Aging

Abstract:Metasequoia glyptostroboides, Hu and W. C. Cheng, as the only surviving relict species of the Taxodiaceae Metasequoia genus, is a critically endangered and protected species in China. There is a risk of extinction due to the low vigor of M. glyptostroboides seeds, and the physiological mechanism of seed aging in M. glyptostroboides is not yet clear. In order to investigate the physiological and molecular mechanisms underlying the aging process of M. glyptostroboides seeds, we analyzed the antioxidant system and transcriptome at 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 days after artificial accelerated aging treatment at 40 °C and 100% relative humidity. It was found that the germination percentage of fresh dried M. glyptostroboides seeds was 54 ± 5.29%, and significantly declined to 9.33 ± 1.88% after 6 days of aging, and then gradually decreased until the seed died on day 8. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, ascorbic acid (AsA), glutathione (GSH) content and superoxide anion (O2·−) content and production rate significantly decreased, while malondialdehyde (MDA) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) content and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) and catalase (CAT) activity gradually increased during the aging process. A total of 42,189 unigenes were identified in the whole transcriptome, and 40,446 (95.86%) unigenes were annotated in at least one protein database. A total of 15,376 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were obtained; KEGG enrichment analysis results revealed that seed aging may be mainly involved in the protein-processing pathways in endoplasmic reticulum, oxidative phosphorylation, and ascorbate and aldarate metabolism. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) revealed that the dark magenta, orange, and medium purple modules were highly correlated with physiological indicators such as SOD, CAT, and GSH and further identified 40 hub genes such as Rboh, ACO, HSF, and CML as playing important roles in the antioxidant network of M. glyptostroboides seeds. These findings provide a broader perspective for studying the regulatory mechanism of seed aging and a large number of potential target genes for the breeding of other endangered gymnosperms.

Abstract:Degreening is the most obvious phenotypic change during green organ senescence, and the causal process of rapid chlorophyll degradation is one of the characteristic senescence-associated processes. The major biochemical pathway of senescence-associated chlorophyll degradation, i.e. PAO pathway, has been largely elu-cidated over the past decade or so. Free chlorophyll and its catabolites possess a potential phototoxicity, and therefore the delicately regulated degradation of chlorophyll during senescence is regarded as a detoxiifcation process. So far, the global regulatory mechanism of chlorophyll degradation remains largely unknown. Identiif-cation and functional characterization of the key regulatory factor of chlorophyll degradation STAY-GREEN 1 (SGR1)/NON-YELLOWING 1 (NYE1) in diversiifed species marked a milestone progress of this area in recent years. The areas where signiifcant progresses and/or breakthroughs could be made in the near future are dis-cussed.
Nutritional evaluation and transcriptome analyses of short-time germinated seeds in soybean (Glycine max L. Merri.)

Abstract:Abstract Germination is a common practice for nutrition improvement in many crops. In soybean, the nutrient value and genome-wide gene expression pattern of whole seeds germinated for short-time has not been fully investigated. In this study, protein content (PC), water soluble protein content (WSPC), isoflavone compositions were evaluated at 0 and 36 h after germination (HAG), respectively. The results showed that at 36HAG, PC was slightly decreased ( P > 0.05) in ZD41, J58 and JHD, WSPC and free isoflavone (aglycones: daidzein, genistein, and glycitein) were significantly increased (P < 0.05), while total isoflavone content was unchanged. Transcriptomic analysis identified 5240, 6840 and 15,766 DEGs in different time point comparisons, respectively. GO and KEGG analysis showed that photosynthesis process was significantly activated from 18HAG, and alternative splicing might play an important role during germination in a complex manner. Response to hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) was found to be down regulated significantly from 18 to 36HAG, suggesting that H 2 O 2 might play an important role in germination. Expression pattern analysis showed the synthesis of storage proteins was slowing down, while the genes coding for protein degradation (peptidase and protease) were up regulated as time went by during germination. For genes involved in isoflavone metabolism pathway, UGT (7-O-glucosyltransferase) coding genes were significantly up regulated (40 up-DEGs vs 27 down-DEGs), while MAT (7-O-glucoside-6′′-O-malonyltransferase) coding genes were down regulated, which might explain the increase of aglycones after germination. This study provided a universal transcriptomic atlas for whole soybean seeds germination in terms of nutrition and gene regulation mechanism.

Comprehensive investigation of tobacco leaves during natural early senescence via multi-platform metabolomics analyses

Abstract:Abstract Senescence is the final stage of leaf growth and development. Many different physiological activities occur during this process. A comprehensive metabolomics analysis of tobacco middle leaves at 5 different developmental stages was implemented through multi-platform methods based on liquid chromatography, capillary electrophoresis and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. In total, 412 metabolites were identified, including pigments, sterols, lipids, amino acids, polyamines, sugars and secondary metabolites. Dramatic metabolic changes were observed. Firstly, membrane degradation and chlorophyll down-regulation occurred after the 50% flower bud stage. Levels of major membrane lipids decreased, including those of the glycolipids in chloroplast thylakoids and phospholipids in membrane envelopes. Clear decreases in free sterols and acylated sterol glucosides were detected along with the accumulation of sterol esters. The accumulation of alkaloids was found. The amino acid levels were significantly decreased, particularly those of N-rich amino acids (glutamine and asparagine), thus reflecting N translocation. Subsequently, the antioxidant system was activated. Sugar alcohols and polyphenols accumulated when the lower leaves turned yellow. These results comprehensively revealed the metabolic changes that occur during tobacco leaf development and senescence under natural conditions.

Abstract:Seed viability depends upon the maintenance of functional lipids; however, how membrane lipid components dynamically change during the seed aging process remains obscure. Seed storage is accompanied by the oxidation of membrane lipids and loss of seed viability. Understanding membrane lipid changes and their effect on the cell membrane during seed aging can contribute to revealing the mechanism of seed longevity. In this study, the potential relationship between oxidative stress and membrane lipid metabolism was evaluated by using a non-targeted lipidomics approach during artificial aging of Glycine max L. Merr. Zhongdou No. 27 seeds. We determined changes in reactive oxygen species, malondialdehyde content, and membrane permeability and assessed antioxidant system activity. We found that decreased non-enzymatic antioxidant contents and catalase activity might lead to reactive oxygen species accumulation, resulting in higher electrolyte leakage and lipid peroxidation. The significantly decreased phospholipids and increased glycerolipids and lysophospholipids suggested that hydrolysis of phospholipids to form glycerolipids and lysophospholipids could be the primary pathway of membrane metabolism during seed aging. Moreover, the ratio of phosphatidylcholine to phosphatidylethanolamine, double bond index, and acyl chain length of phospholipids were found to jointly regulate membrane function. In addition, the observed changes in lipid metabolism suggest novel potential hallmarks of soybean seed aging, such as diacylglycerol 36:4; phosphatidylcholine 34:2, 36:2, and 36:4; and phosphatidylethanolamine 34:2. This knowledge can be of great significance for elucidating the molecular mechanism underlying seed aging and germplasm conservation.

Abstract:Chinese flowering cabbage is one of the main leafy vegetables produced in China. They have a rapid leaf yellowing due to chlorophyll degradation after harvest that limits their marketing. In the present study, leaf senescence of the cabbages was manipulated by ethylene and 6-benzyl aminopurine (6-BA) treatment to investigate the correlation of leaf senescence and chlorophyll degradation related to gene expression/activities in the darkness. The patterns of several senescence associated markers, including a typical marker, the expression of senescence-associated gene SAG12, demonstrated that ethylene accelerated leaf senescence of the cabbages, while 6-BA retarded this progress. Similar to the trends of BrSAG12 gene expression, strong activation in the expression of three chlorophyll degradation related genes, pheophytinase (BrPPH), pheophorbide a oxygenase (BrPAO) and red chlorophyll catabolite reductase (BrRCCR), was detected in ethylene treated and control leaves during the incubation, while no evident increase was recorded in 6-BA treated leaves. The overall dynamics of Mg-dechelatase activities in all treatments displayed increasing trends during the senescence process, and a delayed increase in the activities was observed for 6-BA treated leaves. However, chlorophyllase activity as well as the expression of BrChlase1 and BrChlase2 decreased with the incubation in all treatments. Taken together, the expression of BrPPH, BrPAO and BrRCCR, and the activity of Mg-dechelatase was closely associated with the chlorophyll degradation during the leaf senescence process in harvested Chinese flowering cabbages under dark conditions.
Transcriptome and Phytochemical Analysis Reveals the Alteration of Plant Hormones, Characteristic Metabolites, and Related Gene Expression in Tea (camellia Sinensis L.) Leaves During Withering

Abstract:Plant hormones play an important role in the chemical metabolism of postharvest plants. However, alterations in plant hormones of postharvest tea and their potential modulation of quality-related metabolites are unknown. In this study, the dynamic alterations of abscisic acid (ABA), salicylic acid (SA), jasmonic acid (JA), and critical metabolites, such as catechins, theanine, and caffeine, in tea leaves were analyzed during withering from 0 to 24 h. It was found that the ABA content increased from 0 to 9 h but decreased thereafter, JA continuously increased, and the SA content showed no significant change. With the exception of gallocatechin (GC) and epicatechin (EC), the amounts of other critical components were significantly reduced at 24 h. Transcriptome analysis showed that compared with 0 h, 2256, 3654, and 1275 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified at 9, 15, and 24 h, respectively. For all comparisons, DEGs corresponding to the pathways of “phenylalanine, tyrosine, and tryptophan biosynthesis” and “phenylalanine metabolism”, involved in the biosynthesis of catechins, were significantly enriched. Weighted correlation network analysis (WGCNA) of co-expression genes indicated that many of the modules were only correlated with a specific trait during the withering process; the dark olive-green module, however, was correlated with two traits, ABA and theanine. Our study indicates that withering induced dramatic alterations in gene transcription as well as levels of hormones (ABA, JA, and SA) and important components, and that ABA regulated theanine metabolism during this process.
Metabolite Changes in Soybean (Glycine max) Leaves during the Entire Growth Period

Abstract:Although soybean (Glycine max) leaves generate building blocks to produce seeds, a comprehensive understanding of the metabolic changes in soybean leaves during the entire growth stages is limited. Here, we investigated the metabolite changes in soybean leaves from five cultivars among four vegetative (V) and eight reproductive (R) stages using metabolite profiling coupled with chemometrics. Principal component analysis (PCA) of all samples showed a clear separation by growth stage. The total amount of monosaccharides and organic acids for energy production were highly detected in the V stage samples, accumulating in concentrations 2.5 and 1.7 times higher than in the R stage samples, respectively. The results of partial least-squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) revealed a clear separation from R1 to R5 by the first PLS, suggesting significant alterations in the metabolic networks up to R5. After flowering, the stage of seed formation, R5, was associated with lower levels of most amino acids and an accumulation of phytosterols. The negative correlation observed between amino acids and phytosterol levels suggests a sophisticated coordination between carbon and nitrogen metabolism in plant, ensuring and supporting optimal growth (r = -0.50085, P = 0.0001). In addition, R-stage samples had decreased monosaccharide levels, indicating redistribution to seeds and senescence-related metabolite changes. Thus, metabolite profiling coupled with chemometrics could be a useful tool for investigating alterations in metabolic networks during various plant growth and development stages. Furthermore, we observed variations in flavonoid contents among the different cultivars. The results could be a basis of further studies on the source-sink interactions in the plant system.

Abstract:Abstract Senescence is a degenerative process triggered by intricate and coordinated regulatory networks, and the mechanisms of age-dependent senescence and stress-induced premature senescence still remain largely elusive. Thus we selected leaf samples of developmental senescence (DS) and premature senescence (PS) to reveal the regulatory divergence. Senescent leaves were confirmed by yellowing symptom and physiological measurement. A total of 1171 and 309 genes (DEGs) were significantly expressed respectively in the whole process of DS and PS. Up-regulated DEGs in PS were mostly related to ion transport, while the down-regulated DEGs were mainly associated with oxidoreductase activity and sesquiterpenoid and triterpenoid biosynthesis. In DS, photosynthesis, precursor metabolites and energy, protein processing in endoplasmic reticulum, flavonoid biosynthesis were notable. Moreover, we found the vital pathways shared by DS and PS, of which the DEGs were analyzed further via protein–protein interaction (PPI) network analysis to explore the alteration responding to two types of senescence. In addition, plant hormone transduction pathway was mapped by related DEGs, suggesting that ABA and ethylene signaling played pivotal roles in formulating the distinction of DS and PS. Finally, we conducted a model containing oxidative stress and ABA signaling as two hub points, which highlighted the major difference and predicted the possible mechanism under DS and PS. This work gained new insight into molecular divergence of developmental senescence and premature senescence and would provide reference on potential mechanism initiating and motivating senescence for further study.

Abstract:Early leaf senescence phenotype in soybean could be helpful to shorten the maturation period and prevent green stem disorder. From a high-density mutation library, we identified two early leaf senescence soybean mutant lines, els1-1 ( e arly l eaf s enescence 1 ) and els1-2. The chlorophyll contents of both els1-1 and els1-2 were low in pre-senescent leaves. They degraded rapidly in senescent leaves, revealing that ELS1 is involved in chlorophyll biosynthesis during leaf development and chlorophyll degradation during leaf senescence. The causal mutations in els1 were identified by next-generation sequencing-based bulked segregant analysis. ELS1 encodes the ortholog of the Arabidopsis CaaX-like protease BCM1, which is localized in chloroplasts. Soybean ELS1 was highly expressed in green tissue, especially in mature leaves. The accumulation of photosystem I core proteins and light-harvesting proteins in els1 was low even in pre-senescent leaves, and their degradation was accelerated during leaf senescence. These results suggest that soybean ELS1 is involved in both chlorophyll synthesis and degradation, consistent with the findings in Arabidopsis BCM1. The gene els1, characterized by early leaf senescence and subsequent early maturation, does not affect the flowering time. Hence, the early leaf senescence trait regulated by els1 helps shorten the harvesting period because of early maturation characteristics. The els1-1 allele with weakly impaired function of ELS1 has only a small effect on agricultural traits and could contribute to practical breeding.

Abstract:Flowers and pod abscission significantly reduces soybean yield. This study aims to identify the main signaling pathways and key candidate genes in soybean leaves that affect flower and pod abscission under shade conditions. This information will be useful for the localization and cloning of genes related to abscission. Two soybean cultivars with different abscission rates (Liaodou 32 and Shennongdou 28) were used in this experiment. The soybean leaves were subjected to 50% shading treatment and the transcriptome and metabolome was sequenced during the light-sensitive period. The effects of weak light at different growth stages on the metabolic pathways of soybean leaves and organ abscission were investigated by analyzing plant phenotype and physiological changes. The results showed that both two cultivars triggered the same molecular mechanism and similar metabolite accumulation mode by shading, but the regulations of the two cultivars were different. The key candidate genes identified for soybean flower and pod abscission caused by shading were DIV, MYB06, MYB44, MY1R1, MYBS3, WRKY6, WRK53, WRK70, WRK40, DOF14, CDF3, CDF2, GATA5, DREB3 and ERF3; the differentially expressed genes that caused the variation between the cultivars were SRM1, MYB16, WRK24, COL16, MYB61 and TRB1. The main metabolic pathways involved in soybean flower and pod abscission caused by shading were secondary metabolite biosynthesis pathway, metabolic pathway, cofactor biosynthesis pathway, phenylpropanoid biosynthesis pathway, flavonoid biosynthesis pathway, fatty acid biosynthesis pathway and amino acid biosynthesis pathway; the DEMs that caused the differences among the cultivars were carbon metabolism, glutathione metabolism, biotin metabolism, nucleotide metabolism, purine metabolism, plant hormone signaling, flavone and flavonol biosynthesis, lysine degradation, arginine and proline metabolism, amino sugars and nucleotide sugars metabolism, etc. In conclusion, shading treatment in the light-sensitive period of soybean changed the physiological response and gene expression level of leaves, inhibited carbohydrate metabolism and transport and biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, and thereby leading to increased competition and hormonal disruption, which promoted the abscission of soybean flowers/pods and reduced grain yield.

Abstract:Melatonin, a pleiotropic small molecule, is employed in horticultural crops to delay senescence and preserve postharvest quality. In this study, 100 μM melatonin treatment delayed a decline in the color difference index h* and a*, maintaining the content of chlorophyll and carotenoids, thereby delaying the yellowing and senescence of Chinese kale. Transcriptome analysis unequivocally validates melatonin's efficacy in delaying leaf senescence in postharvest Chinese kale stored at 20 °C. Following a three-day storage period, the melatonin treatment group exhibited 1637 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) compared to the control group. DEG analysis elucidated that melatonin-induced antisenescence primarily governs phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, lipid metabolism, plant signal transduction, and calcium signal transduction. Melatonin treatment up-regulated core enzyme genes associated with general phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, flavonoid biosynthesis, and the α-linolenic acid biosynthesis pathway. It influenced the redirection of lignin metabolic flux, suppressed jasmonic acid and abscisic acid signal transduction, and concurrently stimulated auxin signal transduction. Additionally, melatonin treatment down-regulated RBOH expression and up-regulated genes encoding CaM, thereby influencing calcium signal transduction. This study underscores melatonin as a promising approach for delaying leaf senescence and provides insights into the mechanism of melatonin-mediated antisenescence in postharvest Chinese kale.
