Abstract:Based on the excellent performances of nanocrystalline cellulose, sodium alginate, or K-carrageenan in Pb2+ adsorption, nanocrystalline cellulose/sodium alginate/K-carrageenan composite hydrogel beads were prepared to adsorb Pb(II) from aqueous solutions. The objective of this study was to demonstrate the excellent potential of the composite hydrogel beads for heavy metal ion adsorption. We successfully prepared ecofriendly Fe-modified nanocrystalline cellulose/sodium alginate/K-carrageenan composite hydrogel beads and characterized them. The structure and adsorption mechanism were investigated using scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and the optimal adsorption conditions were determined. The tricomponent hydrogel beads were robust and exhibited improved adsorption capacity for Pb2+ and good reusability. The adsorption results could be fitted well with a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir adsorption model. The maximum adsorption capacity obtained by fitting was 351.04 mg g−1. Recycling experiments revealed that the adsorption capacity of the adsorbent remained high after five cycles of reuse.

Abstract:As a common macromolecular carbohydrate, pectin has a strong affinity for Pb2+. An ethylenediamine modified pectin (EP48) with 48 % of amidation was prepared and exhibited great removal efficiency towards Pb2+ in our previous study. However, the EP48 has drawbacks in adsorption including low mechanical strength and difficulty in separation. In this study, EP48 was compounded with sodium alginate (Alg) and Fe3O4 to synthesize EP48/Alg/Fe3O4 microsphere. The physicochemical properties and Pb2+ adsorption characteristics of microsphere were analyzed. It was found that the microsphere exhibited good thermal stability, mechanical strength, porous structure, as well as acid tolerance. The pseudo-second-order model well described the kinetics of adsorption process, indicating the chemical adsorption is dominant. The Langmuir model fitted the experimental data well, and the maximum adsorption capacity reached 175.19 mg/g. Adsorption-desorption experiments showed that the removal rate of the microsphere maintained over 98.9 % after 10 cycles. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses revealed that the potential adsorption mechanism included ion-exchange and chelation. The above results suggested its potential use for the removal of Pb2+ from wastewater.

Abstract:Heavy metal contamination, particularly from Pb(II), poses severe environmental and health risks due to its toxicity and persistence in ecosystems. This study presents an innovative and sustainable adsorbent composed of nitrogen doped carbon quantum dots (NCDs), derived from sodium alginate and immobilized on a sodium alginate hydrogel (HL-NCDs), for the efficient extraction of Pb(II) from water. The experimental results indicate that PbN and PbC interactions, particularly involving the NH moieties within the carbon quantum dots, are the predominant mechanisms facilitating Pb(II) removal, as confirmed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. These interactions are substantiated by thermodynamic analyses and charge distribution studies, which highlight the enhanced affinity of HL-NCDs towards Pb(II) ions. The novel HL-NCDs composite material not only demonstrates excellent Pb(II) adsorption efficiency but also suggests broad applicability in water treatment technologies, marking a significant advancement in the use of biomass-derived materials for environmental remediation.

Pectin/Activated Carbon-Based Porous Microsphere for Pb2+ Adsorption: Characterization and Adsorption Behaviour

Abstract:The development of effective heavy metal adsorbents has always been the goal of environmentalists. Pectin/activated carbon microspheres (P/ACs) were prepared through simple gelation without chemical crosslinking and utilized for adsorption of Pb2+. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that the addition of activated carbon increased the porosity of the microsphere. Texture profile analysis showed good mechanical strength of P/ACs compared with original pectin microspheres. Kinetic studies found that the adsorption process followed a pseudo-second-order model, and the adsorption rate was controlled by film diffusion. Adsorption isotherms were described well by a Langmuir isotherm model, and the maximum adsorption capacity was estimated to be 279.33 mg/g. The P/ACs with the highest activated carbon (P/AC2:3) maintained a removal rate over 95.5% after 10 adsorption/desorption cycles. SEM-energy-dispersive X-ray spectrum and XPS analysis suggested a potential mechanism of adsorption are ion exchange between Pb2+ and Ca2+, electronic adsorption, formation of complexes, and physical adsorption of P/ACs. All the above results indicated the P/ACs may be a good candidate for the adsorption of Pb2+.

Discussion: Impact of Prior Unilateral Chest Wall Radiotherapy on Outcomes in Bilateral Breast Reconstruction

Abstract:www.PRSJournal.com 581e P undergoing postmastectomy breast reconstruction, with a history of prior radiation therapy, present a challenging clinical scenario. This is because of their well-documented higher complication rates, secondary to deleterious effects of irradiation on the soft-tissue envelope of the remaining breast.1 This nicely designed retrospective review attempts to define the effects of prior unilateral radiation therapy on outcomes in bilateral prosthetic and autologous reconstruction, comparing the irradiated and nonirradiated breasts.2 Not surprisingly, the authors find that prior irradiation resulted in a significantly increased risk of overall complications, specifically, infection, major skin necrosis, and capsular contracture (in prosthetic reconstruction). The authors state that in their cohort of patients undergoing bilateral prosthetic reconstruction, the irradiated breast was associated with similar rates of implant failure and explantation as the nonirradiated breasts. This finding is in direct contrast to large published series by Sbitany et al. and Spear et al., in which a history of prior radiation therapy resulted in a significantly higher explantation/failure rate.1,3 Another study by Reish et al. found an increased incidence of overall complications in previously irradiated breasts relative to nonirradiated breasts.4 Furthermore, they found a significant clinical increase in explantation rates in previously irradiated breasts relative to nonirradiated breasts (4.7 percent versus 1.0 percent; p = 0.095) trending toward statistical significance. Given the reported disparity with previous findings, it would be helpful for the authors of this study to describe their surgical techniques in more detail, as this would affect outcomes. Specifically, did they perform direct expansion of the previously irradiated pectoralis muscle, or did they use a regional flap, such as the latissimus, to facilitate soft-tissue expansion in some cases? Furthermore, the issue of whether the authors’ institution performed skin-sparing or nipple-sparing mastectomy would be an interesting clarification point. Nipple-sparing mastectomy allows for less aggressive débridement of threatened skin at the time of immediate reconstruction, and thus poses an additional reconstructive challenge in this population.4,5 In addition, it is interesting that the authors describe equivalent explantation rates among irradiated and nonirradiated breasts, despite their reported significantly higher rate of major skin necrosis and infection in irradiated breasts. Thus, it would also be helpful to know their protocols for managing these occurrences, to minimize overall reconstructive failure and explantation rates. Despite these reported findings, examination of Figure 1 in the article shows that explantation rates were approximately 2-fold higher in irradiated breasts, thus indicating very strong clinical significance. Thus, these findings actually confirm the prevailing belief that a history of prior radiation therapy is associated with a notably higher rate of implant failure. In this current study, it is possible that if a larger cohort of patients had been obtained, these results may have also achieved statistical significance. The authors also note that in irradiated breasts, there was no difference between prosthetic and autologous reconstruction, with regard to overall complications. This highlights the damaging effects of radiation fibrosis on the postmastectomy skin envelope, whether reconstructed with an underlying implant or a vascularized tissue flap. This finding may be surprising to some, as the prevailing belief is that vascularized autologous tissue is superior and safer in this setting,
Low-temperature aerobic carbonization and activation of cellulosic materials for Pb2+ removal in water source

Abstract:Targeting the removal of Pb2+ in wastewater, cellulosic materials were carbonized in an aerobic environment and activated via ion exchange. The maximum adsorption capacity reached 243.5 mg/g on an MCC-derived adsorbent activated with sodium acetate. The modified porous properties improved the adsorption capacity. The capacity could be completely recovered five times through elution with EDTA. Because of the negative effects of Ni, Mg, and Ca elements, the adsorption capacities of activated carbonized natural materials were lower than that of pure cellulose. N2 adsorption measurement showed that the adsorbent had a large specific surface area as well as abundant micropores and 4-nm-sized mesopores. FTIR and surface potential results proved that carboxyl group was generated in the aerobic carbonization, and was deprotonated during ion exchange. This adsorbent consisted of C-C bonds as the building blocks and hydrophilic groups on the surface. XPS results demonstrated that the Pb 4f binding energies were reduced by 0.7-0.8 eV due to the interaction between Pb2+ and the activated adsorbent, indicating that the carboxylate groups bonded with Pb2+ through coordination interactions. Pseudo-second-order and Elovich kinetic models were well fitted with the adsorption processes on the pristine and activated carbonized adsorbents, indicative of chemisorption on heterogeneous surfaces. The Freundlich expression agreed well with the data measured, and the pristine and activated adsorbents had weak and strong affinities for Pb2+, respectively. The Pb2+ adsorption process was exothermic and spontaneous, and heat release determined the spontaneity. The adsorption capacity is attributed to the carboxylate groups and pores generated in the aerobic oxidation and ion exchange procedures.

Abstract:A new type of self-targeting carbon dot (CD-Fla) for the detection of the toxic heavy metal ion Pb2+ was synthesized via a one-pot hydrothermal route using flavonoid extracts of Ginkgo biloba leaves as the starting material. As-prepared CD-Fla exhibited excellent biocompatibility and strong blue emission with a quantum yield of 16.1% and significant fluorescence quenching selectivity for Pb2+ without using any additional targeting molecules. CD-Fla could detect Pb2+ quantitatively within the range 0.1–20.0 nM, with an ultrahigh sensitivity of 55 pM. The selectivity of CD-Fla for Pb2+ was nearly one order of magnitude higher than that for other relevant metal ions. This was much better than ever reported CD-based metal ion sensors. The high sensitivity and selectivity were due to the incorporation of certain flavonoid-like moieties into CD-Fla. CD-Fla was also demonstrated to be a good probe for fluorescence tracing of intracellular Pb2+. The capability of CD-Fla was further improved when it was doped on agarose hydrogel. CD-Fla-doped agarose hydrogel (CD-AHG) allowed for visual fluorescence detection and removal of Pb2+ from water. This was confirmed by testing CD-AHG in actual water samples taken from the Jialing River (Chongqing, China). The Pb2+ adsorbed CD-AHG was regenerable in HCl solution. This study will open a new avenue for synthesizing intelligent materials capable of simultaneously targeting, detecting, and treating heavy metal ions.

Abstract:This paper presents the utilization of sodium alginate (SA) as a raw material to construct a double network structure through the incorporation of chitosan (CS) and the electrostatic polymerization of SA. Subsequently, by employing polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as a functional material, a modified SA/CS/PVA composite hydrogel (SCPH) was prepared via the Ca(II) ion exchange method. The hydro-gel exhibited a flocculent form, thereby greatly enhancing the removal of Pb(II). The adsorption process of Pb(II) by the SCPH reached equilibrium within 30 min, achieving a remarkable removal rate of 97.45% and a maximum adsorption capacity of 147.93 mg/g (298 K). A series of characterization analyses have been employed to investigate the structure and adsorption mechanism of hydrogels, and the adsorption mechanism involves ion exchange, electrostatic attraction, as well as the complexation of hydroxyl and carboxyl groups. Batch adsorption experiments were conducted at different temperatures and pH levels, and the kinetics and isotherms were investigated. The Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model were found to best fit the experimental data, suggesting the feasibility of using the SCPH as an efficient adsorbent for Pb(II) removal. Moreover, the dual network structure constructed by SA and CS significantly enhances the adsorption performance of SCPH. At the same time, PVA strengthens the mechanical strength of SCPH, which is favorable for recycling. As a low-cost and efficient adsorbent, SCPH can be widely used in water treatment.

Abstract:Novel pectin/poly(m-phenylenediamine) (P/PmPDA) microspheres with different content of PmPDA were prepared by assembling PmPDA on the surface of pectin microsphere. The successful preparation was confirmed by the results of Fourier Transform Infrared spectra (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and elemental analysis. Compared with pectin microsphere, the Pb2+ adsorption performance of P/PmPDA microspheres was significantly improved. The results of batch adsorption experiments were in good agreement with the Langmuir isotherm model for Pb2+ adsorption, indicating the adsorption was monolayer. The maximum adsorption capacity of Pb2+ was found to be 390.9 mg/g. The kinetic adsorption process was well described by the pseudo-second-order model and chemical adsorption dominated the adsorption process. The potential mechanisms of Pb2+ adsorption were speculated as ion exchange and chelation, which were supported by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The P/PmPDA microspheres showed good recyclability after five adsorption/desorption cycles. All these results indicated the potential of P/PmPDA microspheres for removing Pb2+.

Abstract:The adsorption removal of lead (Pb) ions has become a crucial area of research due to the potential health hazards associated with Pb contamination. Developing cost-effective adsorbents for the removal of Pb(II) ions is significantly important. Hence, a novel fluorescent starch-based hydrogel (FSH) using starch (ST), cellulose nanofibrils (CN), and carbon dots (CD) was fabricated for simultaneous adsorption and detection of Pb(II). A comprehensive characterization of FSH, including its morphological features, chemical composition, and fluorescence characteristics, was conducted. Notably, FSH exhibited a maximum theoretical adsorption capacity of 265.9 mg/g, which was 13.0 times higher than that of pure ST. Moreover, FSH was employed as a fluorescent sensor for Pb(II) determination, achieving a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.06 μg/L. An analysis was further performed to investigate the adsorption and detection mechanisms of Pb(II) utilizing FSH. This study provides valuable insights into the production of a novel cost-effective ST-based adsorbent for the removal of Pb(II) ions.

Adsorptive removal of Pb(II) ions from aqueous effluents using O-carboxymethyl chitosan Schiff base-sugarcane bagasse microbeads

Abstract:In this study, a novel and cost-effective approach was employed to prepare an effective Pb(II) adsorbent. We synthesized highly porous CMCSB-SCB microbeads with multiple active binding sites by combining carboxymethylated chitosan Schiff base (CMCSB) and sugarcane bagasse (SCB). These microbeads were structurally and morphologically characterized using various physical, analytical, and microscopic techniques. The SEM image and N2-adsorption analysis of CMCSB-SCB revealed a highly porous structure with irregularly shaped voids and interconnected pores. The CMCSB-SCB microbeads demonstrated an impressive aqueous Pb(II) adsorption capacity, reaching a maximum of 318.21 mg/g, under identified optimal conditions: pH 4.5, 15 mg microbeads dosage, 30 min contact time, and Pb(II) initial concentration (350 mg/L). The successful adsorption of Pb(II) onto CMCSB-SCB beads was validated using FTIR, EDX, and XPS techniques. Furthermore, the experimental data fitting indicated a good agreement with the Langmuir model (R2 = 0.99633), whereas the adsorption kinetics aligned well with the pseudo-second-order model (R2 = 0.99978). The study also identified the Pb(II) adsorption mechanism by CMCSB-SCB microbeads as monolayer chemisorption.
Adsorption of heavy metal ions from aqueous solution by carboxylated cellulose nanocrystals

Abstract:A novel nanoadsorbent for the removal of heavy metal ions is reported. Cotton was first hydrolyzed to obtain cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). CNCs were then chemically modified with succinic anhydride to obtain SCNCs. The sodic nanoadsorbent (NaSCNCs) was further prepared by treatment of SCNCs with saturated NaHCO3 aqueous solution. Batch experiments were carried out with SCNCs and NaSCNCs for the removal of Pb2+ and Cd2+. The effects of contact time, pH, initial adsorption concentration, coexisting ions and the regeneration performance were investigated. Kinetic studies showed that the adsorption equilibrium time of Pb2+ and Cd2+ was reached within 150 min on SCNCs and 5 min on NaSCNCs. The adsorption capacities of Pb2+ and Cd2+ on SCNCs and NaSCNCs increased with increasing pH. The adsorption isotherm was well fitted by the Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacities of SCNCs and NaSCNCs for Pb2+ and Cd2+ were 367.6 mg/g, 259.7 mg/g and 465.1 mg/g, 344.8 mg/g, respectively. SCNCs and NaSCNCs showed high selectivity and interference resistance from coexisting ions for the adsorption of Pb2+. NaSCNCs could be efficiently regenerated with a mild saturated NaCl solution with no loss of capacity after two recycles. The adsorption mechanisms of SCNCs and NaSCNCs were discussed.

Abstract:Abstract In this study, we used nitrogen-doped carbon dots (NCDs), which were synthesized via the hydrothermal method of corn-stover biomass as raw material and polyethyleneimine as the nitrogen source, introduced them into the carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)-based hydrogel to prepare an environmentally friendly fluorescent cellulose-based hydrogel (NCDs/CMC-PAM). NCDs/CMC-PAM was also used for simultaneous fluorescence monitoring and removal of Cu (II) in aqueous solution. The chemical and physical structures, adsorption behaviors and fluorescent properties of NCDs/CMC-PAM were investigated. The results showed that NCDs/CMC-PAM exhibited a well-linear response range of fluorescence response for Cu (II) (0∼100 μM, detection limit of 3.42 μM). NCDs/CMC-PAM showed maximum adsorption capacities of 237.71 mg/g for Cu (II), the adsorption process followed the Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model, which is an exothermic spontaneous reaction with an increase in entropy. It can still maintain 79.03% of the original adsorption capacity after six cycles (pH = 6). The adsorption mechanisms of NCDs/CMC-PAM for Cu (II) are intraparticle diffusion, electrostatic attraction, ion exchange, and ligand interaction. Hence, the present study provides a new green way to synthesize an adsorbent that can be applied for the adsorption and detection of heavy metal ions.

Abstract:A porous semi-interpenetrating network (semi-IPN) hydrogel adsorbent with excellent adsorption properties and removal efficiency towards Pb(II) was prepared by a facile grafting polymerization reaction in aqueous medium using natural biopolymer sodium alginate (SA) as the main chains, sodium acrylate (NaA) as the monomers, and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as the semi-IPN component. FTIR, TGA and SEM analyses confirm that NaA monomers were grafted onto the macromolecular chains of SA, and PVA chains were interpenetrated and entangled with the crosslinked network. The incorporation of PVA facilitates to form pores on the surface of hydrogel adsorbent. The semi-IPN hydrogel containing 2 wt% of PVA exhibits high adsorption capacity and fast adsorption rate for Pb(II). The best adsorption capacity reaches 784.97 mg/g, and the optimal removal rate reaches 98.39% (adsorbent dosage, 2 g/L). In addition, the incorporation of PVA improved the gel strength of hydrogel, and the storage modulus of hydrogel increased by 19.4% after incorporating 2 wt% of PVA. The increase of gel strength facilitates to improve the reusability of hydrogel. After 5 times of regeneration, the adsorption capacity of SA- g -PNaA decreased by 23.2%, while the adsorption capacity of semi-IPN hydrogel only decreased by 10.8%. The adsorption kinetics of the hydrogel in the initial stage (the moment when the adsorbent contacts solution) and the second stage are fitted by segmentation. It is intriguing that the adsorption kinetics fits well with both pseudo-second-order kinetic model and pseudo-first-order model before 60 s, while only fits well with pseudo-second-order adsorption model in the whole adsorption process. The chemical complexing adsorption mainly contribute to the efficient capturing of Pb(II).

Abstract:Water is an important raw material in the food production process. Maintaining the quality and safety of water is very important in the food field. In this study, a simple novel fluorescent nanocellulose hydrogel (FNH) was prepared for the detection and removal of heavy metals (Fe3+ and Pb2+) in aqueous solutions based on carbon dots (CDs). The CDs were grafted onto the carboxylated nanocellulose (CNC) by the EDC/NHS coupling method, and then the nanocellulose (NC), CNC, and FNH were characterized by FTIR analysis. The effect of adsorption environment on FNH adsorption capacity was also investigated. After carboxylation and grafting of CDs, the adsorption capacity of nanocellulose to Fe3+ and Pb2+ was greatly improved, and it was also allowed to make fast visual responses to Fe3+ as an optical sensor to determine the concentration of Fe3+ through the visual signal. Static adsorption experiment demonstrated that the removal rate of Fe3+ and Pb2+ by FNH exceeded 69.4% and 98.2%, and the adsorption capacity amount reached 98.3 mg/g and 442.0 mg/g. At the same time, due to the fluorescence quenching effect of Fe3+, FNH could also be used for the detection of Fe3+ concentration in aqueous solution, and the limit of detection (LOD) could reach 62.5 mg/L.

Abstract:Two novel adsorbents of CaAl-LDHs and sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) intercalated CaAl-LDHs (SDBS-CaAl-LDHs) were successfully prepared by co-precipitation. The main composition and physical properties of two samples were characterized by XRD, XPS, FT-IR, TG, and SEM. Batch adsorption experiments were conducted to study the effect of pH, adsorption time, and initial concentration of Pb2+. The results showed that the prime adsorption conditions obtained were pH of 5.2 after 60 min with the initial concentration of 300 mg g−1 for CaAl-LDHs and 350 mg g−1 for SDBS-CaAl-LDHs. At 303 K, the adsorption capacities and removal rates of CaAl-LDHs and SDBS-CaAl-LDHs were found to be 456.05 mg g−1, 91.21% and 682.26 mg g−1, 97.47%, respectively. For CaAl-LDHs, the kinetic data for Pb2+ was best fitted with pseudo-2nd-order model, and the adsorption isotherms followed Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm model. The adsorption data of SDBS-CaAl-LDHs can be best described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir model. The Pb2+ adsorption mechanism on SDBS-CaAl-LDHs was explored by XRD, XPS, and SEM, and the important roles of the electrostatic attraction, precipitation, complexation, and ion exchange were demonstrated. The Langmuir adsorption capacities for SDBS-CaAl-LDHs were 797.63, 828.76, and 854.29 mg g−1 at 293 k, 303 k, and 313 k, respectively. Thus, SDBS-CaAl-LDHs may be a highly economical adsorbent for the treatment of contaminated water.

Abstract:In this study, a fresh three-dimensional microsphere adsorbent (CATP@SA3) was successfully synthesized by Attapulgite (ATP) and combining Chitosan (CS), incorporating them into a Sodium alginate (SA) solution, and crosslinking them in a CaCl2 solution. Multiple analyses, including XRD, TGA, FTIR, XPS, SEM-EDS, and BET were utilized to comprehensively characterize the structural makeup of CATP@SA3. These analyses revealed the presence of beneficial functional groups like hydroxyl, amino, and carboxyl groups that enhance the adsorption efficiency in adsorption procedures. CATP@SA3 was evaluated by studying different factors, including material ratio, contact time, dosage, solution pH, Pb(II) concentration, temperature, ionic strength, and aqueous environment. Three adsorption models, including kinetic, isotherm, and thermodynamic, were fitted to the experimental data. The findings demonstrated that the maximum Pb(II) adsorption capacity of CATP@SA3 was 1081.36 mg/g, with a removal rate that exceeded 70 % even after 5 cycles of use. Furthermore, correlation adsorption models revealed that the adsorption process of Pb(II) with CATP@SA3 was driven by a chemical predominantly reaction.
Effective Pb 2+ adsorption by calcium alginate/modified cotton stalk biochar aerogel spheres: With application in actual wastewater

Abstract:A spherical composite aerogel adsorbent (CA/KCB aerogel) with excellent Pb 2+ adsorption performance was prepared by sol-gel method using calcium alginate (CA) and KMnO 4 modified cotton stalk biochar (KCB). The preparation parameters of CA/KCB aerogel were optimized by response surface methodology. The physicochemical properties and Pb 2+ adsorption characteristics of CA/KCB aerogel were systematically investigated. The CA/KCB aerogel before and after Pb 2+ adsorption was characterized by SEM, EDS, FTIR and XRD, and the adsorption mechanism was discussed. The optimal preparation parameters of CA/KCB aerogel are: the dosage of KCB was 6 g/L, the mass concentration of sodium alginate and CaCl 2 was 3% and 1% respectively. CA/KCB aerogel was rich in oxygen-containing functional groups, exchangeable cations and interconnected pores, and can exist stably in aqueous solutions with a wide pH range (2−12). The data of adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherms can be well fitted by the pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir model, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity of Pb 2+ was 664.6 mg/g. The adsorption process was an endothermic reaction dominated by monolayer chemisorption. The binding of CA and KCB in aerogel can promote the adsorption of Pb 2+ synergistically. Finally, CA/KCB aerogel was directly applied to the treatment of electroplating wastewater. The coexisting heavy metals (Pb, Cu and Zn) in the wastewater can be effectively removed when the adsorbent dose was 35 g/L. The conclusion is that CA/KCB aerogel has a promising application prospect as adsorbent for heavy metal removal.

Abstract:Surface modification of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) is essential for improving their reactivity and adsorption capacity. Oxidation, as a conventional modification method of CNC, has strong reaction conditions, which may partially destroy the structure of CNCs. Herein, we propose a mild cellulose modification method, in which diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DPTA) was grafted onto CNC with an aminosilane coupling agent. To facilitate the enrichment and recovery of adsorbents, we prepared magnetic CNC before grafting DPTA, and finally obtained magnetic carboxylic functionalized CNC (MCNC-DPTA). The effects of the reaction parameters on the adsorption process were systematically studied by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Vibration sample magnetometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Additionally, the effects of the solution pH, the initial concentration of Pb, and the adsorption time on the adsorption properties of the materials were evaluated. Furthermore, the structure, morphology, and thermal properties of the solution were systematically studied. After 6 cycle tests, the adsorption amount of Pb(II) by MCNC-DPTA was only reduced by 7%. These results show that MCNC-DPTA is an environment-friendly adsorption material with an excellent Pb(II) removal effect.
