Abstract:This study examines the potential of defect-engineered pure SnO 2 nanoparticles as efficient photocatalysts for wastewater treatment under sunlight irradiation. Two distinct SnO 2 nanosystems are synthesized through a facile and cost-effective sol–gel approach. Defects are deliberately introduced into one of the samples by altering the annealing process. After the formation of SnO 2 gel, this sample undergoes rapid cooling between two consecutive annealing stages of 2 h and 4 h at 100 °C under vacuum conditions respectively. In contrast, the other sample is subjected to conventional annealing in a hot air environment at 400 °C for 24 h. The structural and optical properties of these samples are meticulously characterized using X-ray diffraction, UV–visible spectroscopy, TEM, FTIR, BET and EPR respectively. Subsequently, the photocatalytic performance of both SnO 2 nanoparticle samples is evaluated by degrading a methyl orange solution, which serves as a model contaminant for textile industry wastewater under sunlight exposure. The defect-engineered SnO 2 sample demonstrates a remarkable improvement in photocatalytic efficiency, degrading 82.51% of methyl orange with a rate constant of 0.02886 min −1 under 60 min of sunlight irradiation. In comparison, the standard SnO 2 sample degrades only 29.71% of methyl orange, with a significantly lower rate constant of 0.00575 min −1 under the same irradiation conditions. This improvement is attributed to the increased number of defect sites (oxygen vacancy), surface area (59.877 m 2 /gm) and narrow optical bandgap (2.85 eV), which enhance light absorption and generate more active excitons, thus accelerating the degradation process. The novelty of this research lies in the successful enhancement of photocatalytic performance without the need for doping or composite formation, making it a cost-effective and scalable approach for wastewater treatment applications.

Abstract:A new class of environmental pollutants that have become a significant concern for the entire world's population over the last few decades are pharmaceutical contaminants due to the potential risks they pose to the environment and human health. An investigation on the photocatalytic degradation of four different model pharmaceutical contaminants: Tetracycline (TCT), Sulfamethoxazole (SMX), Chloroquine (CLQ), and Diclofenac (DCF) has been carried out using ZnO nanoparticles as the photocatalyst, and sunlight as the source of energy in a batch photocatalytic reactor. This process resulted in the degradation of about 51% for TCT, 65% for SMX, 61% for CLQ, and 55% for DCF within 30 min of solar irradiation. Complete degradation and COD reduction were achieved after a prolonged irradiation. The slow decay is attributed to the evolution of the intermediate compounds, which were identified using the liquid chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-Q-TOF-MS) method. The possible intermediates formed were identified for each molecule (i.e., TCT having 6 products, SMX, having 4 products, DCF having 8 products and CLQ having 8 products), and the mechanism for each pollutant is proposed. The effect on distinct operational parameters, like catalyst loading, and pH, environmentally relevant parameters such as ionic effect, and multiple contaminants system were investigated. It was found that the anions such as Cl-, SO42-, CO32-, HCO3-, NO3-, F-, Br-, and I-both individually as well as in combination had no effect on the degradation except for SMX. For multiple component systems, when two pollutants are mixed, each pollutant affects the degradation of the other and in the case of CLQ/TCT system, CLQ inhibits the degradation of TCT drastically. The study demonstrates that ZnO is an effective and convenient option for photocatalytic decontamination of water sources contaminated with a variety of pharmaceutical contaminants.

Abstract:Abstract It is challenging to develop a material which has low cost, high activity, good stability and recyclability under light exposure. Apart from these properties, the photocatalyst should also have good visible region absorbance and low electron-hole pair recombination rate. Keeping all this in view, we have designed a simple scalable synthesis of ZnO–ZnS heterostructures for the photocatalytic treatment of industrial waste ( p -nitrophenol and methyl orange). The ZnO–ZnS heterostructures are synthesized via a solvent-free route by thermal annealing of solid-state mixture of ZnO and thiourea (a sulphur source) which results in ZnO–ZnS core shell kind of heterostructure formation. The interface formation between the ZnO–ZnS heterostructure favored the band-gap reduction in comparison to the bare ZnO and ZnS nanoparticles. Further, these ZnO–ZnS heterostructures were utilized as a photocatalyst for the degradation of toxic phenolic molecules ( p -nitrophenol) and harmful organic dyes (methyl orange) present in the water under the light exposure (> 390 nm).

Abstract:The contamination of wastewater by azo dyes indicates serious environmental risks. Currently, industries worldwide use approximately 700,000 tons of these dyes annually, making their removal a significant challenge. In photocatalysis research, a prominent area of dedication to the advancement of visible light photocatalysis aims to achieve superior performance in overall activity. In this study, we fabricated ZnCdS nanoparticles (NPs) via a simple co-precipitation strategy, and sulphur (S)-defect-rich ZnCdS NPs (D-ZnCdS) were created through the ball milling method. These S-defect nanoparticle (NPs) catalysts were utilized for rhodamine B (RhB) dye photocatalytic degradation experiment. (XRD) X-ray diffractometer, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy characterization studies explained the induced S-defect rich in D-ZnCdS NPs. Further, the morphological, band gap determination, and photogenerated charge carrier recombination efficiency were studied using different analytical and spectroscopic characterization techniques. The Brunauer-emmett-teller (BET) results indicate the increased surface area of D-ZnCdS NPs thereby providing more active sites. The photocatalytic degrading efficiency of D-ZnCdS over RhB explains the complete degradation of pollutants within 260 min. This enhancement in the catalytic process is attributed to the increased absorption of photon energy from the visible light and large defect-rich active sites. Further, the involvement of hydroxyl (*OH) and superoxide radicals (O 2 * - ) in the degradation of RhB along with the presence of sulphur defects, significantly improves the charge transfer in ZnCdS NPs. The involvement of certain factors like pH, ions, NCs catalyst and different RhB concentrations on RhB degradation was investigated. Additionally, D-ZnCdS NPs showed stable degrading capability even after six consecutive cycles of catalytic RhB degradation. The by products formed during the RhB photodegradation experiment were identified using Gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) analysis, and toxicity in fish, daphnia, and algae was examined using the Ecological structure-activity relationships (ECOSAR) program. From the above findings, the current research work provides a new strategy for utilizing defect-engineered D-ZnCdS NPs as a promising catalyst for various environmental remediation applications.

Abstract:The use of photocatalysis in wastewater treatment using low cost photocatalyst plays a vital role in thwarting the enigma of water pollution. In this work, we report synthesis of metal- and non-metal-doped zinc oxide (ZnO) nanostructures via solid state, solvent and surfactant-free microwave-assisted thermal decomposition method. HRTEM images confirm the formation of highly crystalline nanorod morphology in the case of sodium-doped ZnO. The photocatalytic activity of the synthesized samples initially assessed by the degradation of methylene blue under visible light illumination suggests that SZO-3 (15wt% Na-doped) with admirable degradation rate (95% in 180 min with apparent rate constant of 1.69 × 10–2 min−1) and tenacious photostability envisages its potential applications in water treatment processes. The coalescence of ultrasound, visible light and catalyst resulted in augmented degradation (99.5%) in 60 min.

Abstract:Novel and versatile photocatalysts that can work under direct sunlight are in high demand especially for mitigating water contamination. Some of the burgeoning pollutants in water are textile dyes, organic molecules, pharmaceutical products etc. In view of their extensive use, polymers wastes such as microplastics in water bodies are a new cause of concern. Using direct sunlight for the degradation of such pollutants needs the development of solar photocatalysts. We report on a novel next-generation solar-photocatalyst, consisting laddered-heterojunction formed between Co 2+ - substituted zinc-ferrite core & zinc-oxide shell, to harvest full-solar-spectrum in scavenger-free photodegradation of dyes, pharmaceuticals and microplastics. Using in-house developed protocols and Microwave-assisted-solvothermal-technique (MAST), nanospheres of ∼20-40nm were synthesized first followed by ZnO shell growth in a controlled manner (∼80-180nm) to obtain the core-shell photocatalyst nanospheres using another microwave approach. The absorption of the photocatalyst could be extended upto 852 nm by judiciously doping with Co 2+ - enabling the utilization of UV-Vis-NIR region of sunlight. As evident from the valence band spectra, the Co 2+ substitution introduced free electrons in the conduction band of ZnFe 2 O 4 that resulted in the formation of laddered type-1 heterojunction. With the optimized Co 2+ content and ZnO-shell thickness, solar-photocatalytic degradation of Methyl-Orange enhanced 6-&12-times respectively. Complete degradation of antibiotics like Ciprofloxacin (CF), Norfloxacin (NF), and Ofloxacin (OF) under direct sunlight was achieved within an hour. This unusual enhanced activity was attributed to the inclusion of Co 2+ , conducive band positions leading to higher absorption and reduced recombination. We also showed the degradation of polypropylene microfibers used in face masks to combat the COVID-19 outbreak could also be degraded., indicating their potential to combat microplastic pollution. Our novel photocatalyst holds promise for sunlight-assisted degradation of a wide range of hazardous pollutants.

Abstract:PVDF-ZnO nanocomposites, prepared through phase separation-assisted nanoprecipitation with varying ZnO concentrations, exhibit enhanced photocatalytic performance against organic dye pollutants. Comprehensive characterization methods, including X-ray diffraction, spectroscopic and microscopic analyses, and thermal stability studies, are employed to assess the microspheres of phase-separated PVDF composites. Band gap analysis and optical characteristics of the nanocomposites are studied using Tauc's plots. The band gap energy of ZnO is determined as 3.47 eV, and the microsphere diameter averages between 0.23 and 0.24 μm. The incorporation of 1–3 wt% ZnO increases the decomposition temperature to approximately 480 °C. Photocatalytic performance tests utilizing various organic dye pollutants such as Methyl Orange (MO), Thymol Blue (TB), and Cresol Red (CR) reveal significant degradation efficiencies of 86 %, 84 %, and 35 %, respectively, under natural sunlight exposure. Despite the reduction in crystallinity of the phase-separated PVDF particles with the addition of ZnO, notable enhancements in the photocatalytic activity are achieved for the composites. Phase separation provides a synergistic interaction between the aligned polymer chains and the ZnO nanoparticles, contributing to the high degradation efficiency. Moreover, the presence of ZnO active photocatalytic sites induces active dye degradation. The study showcases the potentiality of PVDF/ZnO nanocomposites in photocatalytic dye degradation, with recoverability of composite particles from dye solutions, a simple composite development method, and direct exposure to natural sunlight. Significant implications are anticipated in pollution control and environmental remediation through the purification of industrial wastewater.

Abstract:Zinc oxide nanostructures of different morphology were prepared through a facile low-temperature hydrothermal method in the presence of ionic capping agents, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (ZnO-CTAB) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (ZnO-SDS) and in absence of capping agents (ZnO-1). The synthesis follows an environmentally safer, simpler, and cost-effective method. The present work highlights the morphological transition and its impact on the optical and photocatalytic properties of ZnO nanostructures. Results from X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD) indicate that ZnO is in a single phase with a hexagonal wurtzite structure in all three samples. Photoluminescence spectra showed a green emission mediated by the presence of defects. The UV–vis absorption spectra revealed a marked blueshift in absorbance for capped zinc oxide nanostructures compared to uncapped ones. Raman spectroscopy was carried out to evaluate the vibrational modes of the molecules. FESEM images showed that the morphology changed from nanorods (ZnO-1) to rounded morphology (ZnO-CTAB) and petal-like structure (ZnO-SDS) upon capping with ionic surfactants. Under solar irradiation, the capped nanostructures ZnO-CTAB and ZnO-SDS have effectively decolorized the methylene blue dye compared to uncapped ones and showed improved efficiency. The presence of oxygen vacancies in the nanostructures was confirmed by the emission bands in photoluminescence (PL) studies and by Raman spectral analysis. The synergistic effect of defects in the sample and the morphological transition played an important role in increasing the photocatalytic degradation of the capped ZnO samples. The photocatalytic reaction obeyed pseudo first-order kinetics and the degradation mechanism was investigated using radical scavengers such as tertiary-butyl alcohol (OH radical scavenger), ammonium oxalate (h+ scavenger), and p-benzoquinone (superoxide radical scavenger) to identify the primary species involved in the photodegradation process. The mechanism of photodegradation and the recyclability of capped ZnO nanostructures were studied. The present study suggests the potential of this simple method to prepare desired nanostructures of different morphology using a variety of capping agents that can act as a promising candidate for dye degradation.

Influence of local structure on the location of antigenic determinants in tobacco mosaic virus protein.

Abstract:Early work on protein antigenicity led to the common belief that proteins possess a finite number of antigenic determinants located in accessible regions of the molecule's surface. This view is now changing. As a result of extensive studies, seven continuous epitopes have been located on tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) protein by measuring the antigenic activity of short peptides with anti-protein antibodies. The structure of the viral protein has been refined in Cambridge, enabling the Strasbourg workers to correlate the position of these epitopes with regions of high segmental mobility in the protein. Surface accessibility is not a sufficient condition for antigenicity, because six short peptides corresponding to accessible regions of the protein possess no antigenic activity. Recent work in Strasbourg shows that when longer peptides of TMV protein are used, more antigenic determinants are found and these lie in more structured regions of the protein (e.g. helices). In these cases the longer peptide may be folding up in solution to mimic part of the native structure.
Fabrication of zinc oxide nanorods for photocatalytic degradation of docosane, a petroleum pollutant, under solar light simulator

Abstract:The use of advanced oxidation processes (AOP) in photocatalysis is critical for treating hazardous chemical compounds in oil-produced water (OPW). ZnO NRs are one of the most important modern and safe photocatalysts and have been easily prepared by a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method and grown on glass substrates. Hexagonal-shaped ZnO NRs and a bandgap energy ( E g ) of up to 3.2 eV were characterized using SEM, XRD, UV-Vis, and PL devices, respectively. The effectiveness of photocatalytic degradation on the organic docosane solution was evaluated using a solar light simulator. On the surface area of the ZnO NRs, high photon absorption causes e − /h + pairs to be excited between the VB and CB, producing free radicals that immediately react with organic contaminants and transform them into harmless chemicals. The photocatalytic degradation efficiency of the compound docosane analysed using GC-MS/MS reached 68.5% at 5 hours of irradiation. A mechanism for the photocatalytic degradation of docosane was proposed at pH ∼ 6.5, and a reduction of 60.5% of the total organic carbon (TOC) was achieved. Thus, the photocatalytic treatment of organic compounds contained in OPW has great potential and serves an important environmental purpose.

Abstract:Photocatalyst plays a vital role in the photochemical water treatment. To improve the visible-light photoactivity of TiO2 for refractory pollutant degradation, CdS/TiO2 hybrids with different nanostructures have been prepared, but usually suffer from a low photocatalytic degradation efficiency and a rapid photocorrosion. In this work, we developed a synergistic ZnO/CdS/TiO2 hybrid, which could act as a robust and self-protected photocatalyst for water purification without additional sacrificial reagents. This was attributed to the two different junction mechanisms in one single hybrid. Photons were selectively adsorbed by ZnO and CdS, then, the electrons with a low reductive activity in ZnO recombined directly with the holes with a low oxidative activity in CdS, whereas the holes with a high oxidative activity in ZnO and the electrons with a high reductive activity in CdS were captured for catalytic reaction. The superiority of the novel ZnO/CdS/TiO2 hybrid over the traditional CdS/TiO2 hybrid in both photocatalytic activity and anti-photocorrosion capacity was demonstrated in the degradation of Atrazine and Rhodamine B, two typical refractory organic pollutants, and the treatment of real textile wastewater under solar light irradiation. The developed ZnO/CdS/TiO2 hybrid exhibited an excellent potential for the degradation of refractory pollutants, and provided a new way to advance intrinsically solar-susceptible catalyst for photochemical wastewater treatment.
Morphological Control of Supported ZnO Nanosheet Arrays and Their Application in Photodegradation of Organic Pollutants

Abstract:Supported nanostructured photocatalysis is considered to be a sustainable and promising method for water pollution photodegradation applications due to its fascinating features, including a high surface area, stability against aggregation, and easy handling and recovery. However, the preparation and morphological control of the supported nanostructured photocatalyst remains a challenge. Herein, a one-step hydrothermal method is proposed to fabricate the supported vertically aligned ZnO nanosheet arrays based on aluminum foil. The morphologically controlled growth of the supported ZnO nanosheet arrays on a large scale was achieved, and the effects of hydrothermal temperature on morphologic, structural, optical, and photocatalytic properties were observed. The results reveal that the surface area and thickness of the nanosheet increase simultaneously with the increase in the hydrothermal temperature. The increase in the surface area enhances the photocatalytic activity by providing more active sites, while the increase in the thickness reduces the charge transfer and thus decreases the photocatalytic activity. The influence competition between the area increasing and thickness increasing of the ZnO nanosheet results in the nonlinear dependence between photocatalytic activity and hydrothermal temperature. By optimizing the hydrothermal growth temperature, as fabricated and supported ZnO nanosheet arrays grown at 110 °C have struck a balance between the increase in surface area and thickness, it exhibits efficient photodegradation, facile fabrication, high recyclability, and improved durability. The RhB photodegradation efficiency of optimized and grown ZnO nanosheet arrays increased by more than four times that of the unoptimized structure. With 10 cm2 of as-fabricated ZnO nanosheet arrays, the degradation ratio of 10 mg/L MO, MB, OFL, and NOR was 85%, 51%, 58%, and 71% under UV irradiation (365 nm, 20 mW/cm2) for 60 min. All the target pollutant solutions were almost completely degraded under UV irradiation for 180 min. This work offers a facile way for the fabrication and morphological control of the supported nanostructured photocatalyst with excellent photodegradation properties and has significant implications in the practical application of the supported nanostructured photocatalyst for water pollution photodegradation.

Abstract:Semiconductor-mediated photocatalysis is a promising photochemical process for harvesting inexhaustible solar energy to address the energy crisis and environmental issues. However, the low solar-light response and poor carrier migration are severe drawbacks that limit its practical application. Herein, we propose a convenient pathway for improving electron-hole separation and solar energy utilisation by engineering defective ZnIn2S4 with doping of carbon dots. The optimum ZnIn2S4/CD200 nanosheet exhibited 100% diclofenac (DCF) degradation within 12 min under visible-light. The estimated photocatalytic efficiency under natural sunlight was 98.2%. Scavenging experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis indicated that the superoxide radical (O2 −), photoelectron (e−), hole (h+) and hydroxyl radical ( OH) were the predominant contributions in the ZnIn2S4/CD200/DCF/visible light system. Furthermore, ZnIn2S4/CD200 exhibited excellent reusability and stability after 4 times recycling. The photodegradation routes mainly involved hydroxylation, decarboxylation, CN bond cleavage, dechlorination, ring closure, and ring-opening. The ecological risk assessment and total organic carbon (TOC) tests exhibited desirable toxicity reduction and mineralization results. These observations not only offer a facile strategy for the construction of defective ZnIn2S4, but also pioneer the direct utilisation of natural light for highly efficient environmental remediation.

Abstract:ZnO is an effective photocatalyst applied to the degradation of organic dyes in aqueous media. In this study, the UV-light and sunlight-driven photocatalytic activities of ZnO nanoparticles are evaluated. A handheld Lovibond photometer was purposefully calibrated in order to monitor the dye removal in outdoor conditions. The effect of ZnO defect states, i.e., the presence of zinc and oxygen defects on the photocatalytic activity was probed for two types of dyes: fuchsin and methylene blue. Three morphologies of ZnO nanoparticles were deliberately selected, i.e., spherical, facetted and a mix of spherical and facetted, ascertained via transmission electron microscopy. Aqueous and non-aqueous sol-gel routes were applied to their synthesis in order to tailor their size, morphology and defect states. Raman spectroscopy demonstrated that the spherical nanoparticles contained a high amount of oxygen vacancies and zinc interstitials. Photoluminescence spectroscopy revealed that the facetted nanoparticles harbored zinc vacancies in addition to oxygen vacancies. A mechanism for dye degradation based on the possible surface defects in facetted nanoparticles is proposed in this work. The reusability of these nanoparticles for five cycles of dye degradation was also analyzed. More specifically, facetted ZnO nanoparticles tend to exhibit higher efficiencies and reusability than spherical nanoparticles.

Abstract:ZIF-67, a photocatalytic metal organic framework (MOF) was incorporated into a Na-Alginate/Bentonite matrix to develop novel ZIF-AB mixed matrix catalyst (MMC) bead for visible light driven peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation and Tetracycline (TC) degradation in aqueous medium. Within 1h of visible light irradiation (intensity: 50 W), 0.5 g/L ZIF-AB with 2.5 wt% ZIF-67 (ZIF-AB(2.5)) and 1.5 g/L PMS degraded 99.8% of 25 mg/L TC in aqueous solution. All coexisting ions except Fe 3+ and CO32− have negligible influence on the catalytic activity. The ZIF-AB(2.5)/PMS system effectively degraded TC from real-water sources, with minor residual TC concentrations (0.01–0.023 μg/L), lower than the permitted limit (0.04 μg/L) in discharge water. The Co2+/Co3+|surf. redox played pivotal role towards PMS activation and generation of various radicals, i.e., SO4•− , O•H , O2•− , etc. ZIF-AB(2.5) demonstrated good reusability and structural integrity towards multiple reuse and should be applicable towards industrial processes for continuous removal of emerging contaminants in water.

Abstract:The preparation of ZnO with outstanding photocatalytic performance by a simple method without doping the second phase is a challenge. Herein, an environmental, friendly, simple, and quick route is proposed to synthesize the surfactant modified ZnO nanoparticles using different surfactants as the photocatalyst. Introducing the sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), an anionic surfactant, increases surface hydroxyl groups, enhances visible light absorption intensity, reduces oxygen defects and decreases recombination rate of photo-generated electron/hole pairs, which significantly improves the photocatalytic properties in degradation of the rhodamine B (RhB) under visible-light. In particular, the 6 % SDS surfactant modified ZnO samples demonstrates the excellent photodegradation performance, enabling photodegradation of RhB within 15 minutes. This work provides a new route to synthesize photocatalytic materials with excellent photodegradation performance.

Abstract:Green synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles has attracted research attention as a sustainable method of avoiding the destructive effect of chemicals. We synthesized a flower-shaped zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoflower (NF) from sea buckthorn fruit (SBT) by co-precipitation and characterized it using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), X-ray photo electronic microscopy (XPS), photoluminescence (PL), field emission transmission electron microscopy (FE-TEM), and Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The ability of the ZnO/NF to degrade cationic and anionic dyes, including malachite green (MG), Congo red (CR), methylene blue (MB), and eosin Y (EY), under ultraviolet illumination was studied. The photocatalyst degraded approximately 99% of the MG, MB, CR and EY dyes within 70, 70, 80, and 90 min of contact time, respectively, at a dye concentration of 15 mg/L, 5 mg/L, SBT-ZnO/NF degraded 100% of the MG, MB, CR and EY dyes within 23, 25, 28, and 30 min, respectively. The results indicate that SBT-ZnO/NFs as synthesized is an inexpensive, non-toxic, rapid, and reusable photocatalyst that can play an enhanced role in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Renewable energy can be harnessed from wastewater, whether from municipalities or industries, but this potential is often ignored. The world generates over 900 km3 of wastewater annually, which is typically treated through energy-consuming processes, despite its potential for energy production. Environmental pollution is a most important and serious issue for all and their adulterations to the aquatic system are very toxic in very low concentrations. Photocatalysis is a prominent approach to eliminating risky elements from the environment. The present study developed Zinc oxide (ZnO), Copper-doped Zinc oxide (CuZnO), and Cobalt-doped Zinc oxide (CoZnO) nanostructures (NSs) by facile hydrothermal route. The crystalline and structural stability of the synthesized nanostructures were evident from XRD and FESEM analysis. Metal, and oxygen bond and their interaction on the surfaces and their valency were explored from XPS spectra. Optical orientations and electron movements were revealed from UV-Visible analysis. After 100 min exposure time with 1 g of catalyst concentration 60%, 70%, and 89% of dye degraded, for dye concentration (5 mg/L to 50 mg/L), the huge variation observed (70% to 22%), (80% to 16%), (94% to 10%). The highest photodegradation rate (55%, 75%, 90%) was observed on pH~12 using ZnO, CoZnO, and CuZnO respectively. Photodegradation of methylene blue confirmed the largest surface area, rate of recombination, photo-excited charge carriers, photo-sensitivity range, and radical generations of ZnO, CuZnO, and CoZnO. The present study, therefore, suggested that CuZnO would be preferred to produce nanomaterials for industrial wastewater treatment like methylene.

Abstract:Dye wastewater possess immense toxicity with carcinogenic properties and they persist in environment owing to their stability and resistance to chemical and photochemical changes. The bio degradability of dye-contaminated wastewater is low due to its complex molecular structure. Nano-photocatalysts based on zinc oxide are reported as one of the effective metal oxides for dye remediation due to their photostability, enhanced UV and visible absorption capabilities in an affordable manner. An electron–hole pair forms when electrons in the valence band of ZnO nano-photocatalyst transfer into the conduction band by absorbing UV light. The review article presents a detailed review on ZnO applications for treating acidic and basic dyes along with the dye degradation performance based on operating conditions and photocatalytic kinetic models. Several acidic and basic dyes have been shown to degrade efficiently using ZnO and its nanocomposites. Higher removal percentages for crystal violet was reported at pH 12 by ZnO/Graphene oxide catalyst under 400 nm UV light, whereas acidic dye Rhodamine B at a pH of 5.8 was degraded to 100% by pristine ZnO. The mechanism of action of ZnO nanocatalysts in degrading the dye contamination are reported and the research gaps to make these agents in environmental remediation on real time operations are discussed.
