Abstract:This study aimed to investigate the fluoride release properties and the effect on bond strength of two experimental adhesive cements. Synthesized particles of nano-fluorapatite (nano-FA) or nano-fluorohydroxyapatite (nano-FHA) were incorporated into a resin-modified glass ionomer cement (Fuji Ortho LC) and characterized using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Blocks with six different concentrations of nano-FA or nano-FHA were manufactured and their fluoride release properties evaluated by ultraviolet spectrophotometry. The unaltered glass ionomer cement Fuji Ortho LC (GC, control) and the two experimental cements with the highest fluoride release capacities (nano-FA+Fuji Ortho LC (GFA) and nano-FHA+Fuji Ortho LC (GFHA)) were used to bond composite blocks and orthodontic brackets to human enamel. After 24h water storage all specimens were debonded, measuring the micro-tensile bond strength (μTBS) and the shear bond strength (SBS), respectively. The optimal concentration of added nano-FA and nano-FHA for maximum fluoride release was 25wt.%, which nearly tripled fluoride release after 70days compared with the control group. GC exhibited a significantly higher SBS than GFHA/GFA, with GFHA and GFA not differing significantly (P>0.05). The μTBS of GC and GFA were significantly higher than that of GFHA (P⩽0.05). The results seem to indicate that the fluoride release properties of Fuji Ortho LC are improved by incorporating nano-FA or nano-FHA, simultaneously maintaining a clinically sufficient bond strength when nano-FA was added.
Bioceramic micro-fillers reinforce antibiofilm and remineralization properties of clear aligner attachment materials

Abstract:Introduction: Clear aligners, while offering a more hygienic alternative to fixed appliances, are still associated with challenges including plaque accumulation and enamel demineralization. The aim of the present study was to investigate the antibiofilm and remineralization effectiveness of innovative flowable composite attachments containing bioceramic micro-fillers. Methods: Four experimental attachments were formulated and bonded to human enamel specimens: 3M Filtek Supreme flowable composite (Filtek SF) + 10% bioactive glass 45S5 (BAG), Filtek SF + 30% BAG, Filtek SF + 10% Bredigite (BRT), Filtek SF + 30% BRT. Plaque biofilms were grown on the bonded enamel using a standardized protocol and the biofilm-killing effect was assessed by confocal laser scanning microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Vickers microhardness was measured to evaluate the remineralization effect of the attachments containing bioceramic fillers after acid challenge. Shear bond test was performed to assess the bonding strength. Results: Attachments with bioceramic fillers significantly inhibited plaque biofilm growth in 3 weeks on enamel, contributing over 20% bacterial cell killing in 10% filler groups and over 30% killing in 30% filler groups. All four experimental groups demonstrated significantly higher microhardness values than the control group without fillers on the attachment side. The shear bonding strength was not compromised in the attachments with micro-fillers. Discussion: Proper incorporation of bioceramic micro-fillers in attachments provides an innovative approach for clear aligner therapy with reinforced antibiofilm and remineralization effects without weakening shear bonding strength.

Abstract:AIMS S-1, an oral fluoropyrimidine, contains tegafur, which is converted to 5-fluorouracil mainly by CYP2A6. We evaluated the association between CYP2A6 polymorphisms and treatment outcome in metastatic gastric cancer patients treated with S-1 plus docetaxel. MATERIALS & METHODS Chemonaive patients received S-1 40 mg/m(2) twice daily on days 1-14 and docetaxel 35 mg/m(2) on days 1 and 8 of a 3-week cycle. We analyzed the wild-type (W) allele (CYP2A6*1) and four variant (V) alleles that abolish or reduce enzyme activity (CYP2A6*4, *7, *9 and *10). A total of 50 patients were enrolled. RESULTS The genotype frequencies were as follows: W/W (n=14, 28%), W/V (n=26, 52%) and V/V (n=0, 20%). Patients having fewer variant alleles had significantly better response rates (W/W vs W/V vs V/V=79 vs 65 vs 30%; p=0.04) and median progression-free survival (W/W vs W/V vs V/V=8.1 vs 6.9 vs 3.1 months; p=0.0009). CONCLUSION Our findings showed that the CYP2A6 genotype correlated with the treatment efficacy of S-1-based chemotherapy in previously untreated metastatic gastric cancer patients.

Abstract:The liver is a major target for both short‐ and long‐term actions of ethanol. The mechanisms that mediate the response of cells and tissues to chronic intake of ethanol are unknown, but it is likely that both adaptive and deleterious responses are triggered by short‐term interactions of the cell with ethanol. Cellular signaling processes are candidates to mediate the connection between short‐ and long‐term actions of ethanol. Receptor‐coupled signal transduction systems in the plasma membrane of many different cell types are affected by ethanol. In the liver, the signaling processes associated with phospholipases C and D are particularly responsive to ethanol. In this review, we investigate the direct and indirect short‐term effects of ethanol on the signal transduction systems in liver and discuss the possible implications for the responses of the liver to chronic ethanol exposure.—Hoek, J. Effect of adding ytterbium trifluoride filler particles on the mechanical, physicochemical and biological properties of methacrylate-based experimental resins for 3D printing

Abstract:Objective: To formulate an experimental methacrylate-based photo-polymerizable resin for 3D printing with ytterbium trifluoride as filler and to evaluate the mechanical, physicochemical, and biological properties. Methods: Resin matrix was formulated with 60 wt% UDMA, 40 wt% TEGDMA, 1 wt% TPO, and 0.01 wt% BHT. Ytterbium Trifluoride was added in concentrations of 1 (G1 %), 2 (G2 %), 3 (G3 %), 4 (G4 %), and 5 (G5 %) wt%. One group remained without filler addition as control (GC). The samples were designed in 3D builder software and printed using a UV-DLP 3D printer. The samples were ultrasonicated with isopropanol and UV cured for 60 min. The resins were tested for degree of conversion (DC), flexural strength, Knoop microhardness, softening in solvent, radiopacity, colorimetric analysis, and cytotoxicity (MTT and SRB). Results: Post-polymerization increased the degree of conversion of all groups (p < 0.05). G2 % showed the highest DC after post-polymerization. G2 % showed no differences in flexural strength from the G1 % and GC (p > 0.05). All groups showed a hardness reduction after solvent immersion. No statistical difference was found in radiopacity, softening in solvent (ΔKHN%), colorimetric spectrophotometry, and cytotoxicity (MTT) (p > 0.05). G1 % showed reduced cell viability for SRB assay (p < 0.05). Significance: It was possible to produce an experimental photo-polymerizable 3D printable resin with the addition of 2 % ytterbium trifluoride as filler without compromising the mechanical, physicochemical, and biological properties, comparable to the current provisional materials.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to incorporate silver nanoparticles into yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) ceramic for eliminating microorganism adhesion on dental restoration graft. Y2O3 (3% mol) partially stabilized ZrO2 powder with particle size around 80nm was employed to fabricate tetragonal phase dominated YSZ ceramic block. Silver nanoparticles were efficiently loaded at pH 9.5 by NaBH4 reducing of AgNO3. The biocompatibility of silver incorporated YSZ was evaluated by MTT assay. Antimicrobial activities were quantitatively determined by optical density measurement and qualitatively analysed by scanning electro microscope. Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) revealed that YSZ block containing 0.0047 wt% nanosilver, which is safe to mammalian cell, can inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli, Streptococcus mitis and Candida albicans. The pristine YSZ disc had no effect on bacterial growth. This study suggests that silver nanoparticles incorporated into YSZ blocks possess a broad spectrum antimicrobial effect and may help prevent biofilm formation on their surfaces to improve implant survival rate.

Abstract:Overexpression of the proto-oncogene c-fos induces transformation of primary avian and established rodent mesenchymal cells and tumor development in transgenic mice. As overexpression of Fos was also found in several human tumors of mesenchymal origin, we were interested whether c-fos is a transforming protein for human cells. Since fos genes transduced by infection competent vectors were most efficient in cellular transformation, expression cassettes of the human c-fos were introduced into a replication competent herpesvirus saimiri vector. Infection of human neonatal fibroblasts, cells of mesenchymal origin, resulted in episomal persistence of the recombinant viral genome and expression of c-fos in high excess. However careful examination for transformed phenotype failed to detect any changes in morphology, serum dependence, anchorage dependence, and life span, suggesting resistance of human mesenchymal cells against c-fos mediated transformation.

Abstract:Dental caries (tooth decay) is the most frequent oral disease in humans. Filling cavities with a dental restorative material is the most common treatment, and glass ionomer cements are the main fluoride ion release restorative materials. The goal of this study was to develop a restorative compound with superior fluoride ion release and recharge abilities. Previously developed fluorinated bentolite and hydrophobized 3YSZ were used as two different inorganic fillers mixed in a bisphenol A-glycidyl methacrylate (Bis-GMA) matrix. XRD, FTIR, and TGA were used to determine the hydrophobic modification of these two inorganic fillers. In mechanical tests, including diameter tensile strength, flexural strength, and wear resistance, the developed composite resin was significantly superior to the commercial control. A WST-1 assay was used to confirm that the material displayed good biocompatibility. Furthermore, the simulation of the oral environment confirmed that the composite resin had good fluoride ion release and reloading abilities. Thus, the composite resin developed in this study may reduce secondary caries and provide a new choice for future clinical treatments.

Abstract:Porous fillers are considered as an effective way to improve the mechanical properties of dental composites through the interlocking with organic matrix. In this paper, mesoporous silica (mobil crystalline materials-41) of different particle sizes was synthesized, modified, and added in bisphenol-A glycidyl dimethacrylate/triethylene glycol dimethacrylate resins to obtain composites at different loading levels. The influence of mesoporous filler concentration, particle size, and surface modification on the mechanical properties (flexural strength, flexural modulus, and Vickers microhardness) of composites has been investigated in detail. Compared to nonporous silica, mesoporous silica significantly improved composites’ mechanical properties. Flexural strength and flexural modulus are increased by 44.5% and 33.4%, respectively, when filler mass fraction reaches 15 wt%. Samples filled with silane-modified mesoporous silica show a higher flexural strength with the particle size decreasing from around 470 to 35 nm. The results implied potential applications for dental composites filled with porous fillers.
Fabrication of color-graded feldspathic dental prosthetics for aesthetic and restorative dentistry

Abstract:Objective: Feasibility investigation of natural teeth shades replication on dental prosthetics fabricated via functionally graded additive manufacturing (FGAM) using combination of feldspathic porcelain (FP) and yttrium aluminum garnet cerium (Y3Al5O12:Ce, YAG:Ce) as a promising esthetic restoration option. Methods: Color-graded feldspathic crown fabrication parameter through FGAM method was comprehensively examined from the slurry rheology, cure depth, debinding to sintering temperature. Effect of light absorbent also checked towards overcuring reaction during UV exposure by the shape comparison. Lastly, the flexural bending strength measured following ISO 6872:2015 to assure the applicability. Applying the studied parameter, natural teeth shades then imitated and investigated by alteration of FP and FP + 0.1 wt% YAG:Ce (Y-FP). Generated color across the structure captured through mobile camera, interpreted through the CIELAB coordinate and the gradation confirmed by the color differences (ΔE00) calculated using CIEDE2000 formula. Result: Parameter study indicated that 70 wt% of FP slurry with 3 wt% dispersant and 0.2 wt% light absorbent is favored. It produces excellent flowability in our FGAM system with less overcuring justified by edge margin reduction from 95.65° to 90.00° after UV exposure on rectangle shapes masking. The obtain structure also offers adequate flexural bending strength of 106.26 MPa (FP) and 101.36 MPa (Y-FP) after sintering at 780 °C. This validated the materials as class 2 dental prosthetics citing ISO 6872:2015. Color gradation was verified by the yellow b* value reduction (14.8 to -3.33) as it shifted from cervical to incisal area while ΔE00 further affirmed the differences from each segment in comparison with the FP and Y-FP. Significance: Color gradation was successfully replicated by FP and YAG:Ce composition shift via FGAM technique. This result highlights the potential of FGAM as an alternative for fabricating dental prosthetics with high efficiency and improved esthetic appeal.
Improved performance of Bis-GMA/TEGDMA dental composites by net-like structures formed from SiO2 nanofiber fillers

Abstract:The major objective of this study was to explore the effects of silicon dioxide (SiO2) nanofibers on the performance of 2, 2-bis-[4-(methacryloxypropoxy)-phenyl]-propane (Bis-GMA)/tri-(ethyleneglycol) dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) dental composites. At first, the mechanical properties of Bis-GMA/TEGDMA (50/50, w/w) resins containing different contents of SiO2 nanofibers were evaluated to identify the appropriate composition to achieve the significant reinforcing effect. Secondly, optimized contents (5 or 10wt.%) of SiO2 nanofibers were mixed into resins together with SiO2 microparticles, which was 60wt.% of the resin. Controls for comparison were Bis-GMA/TEGDMA resins containing only SiO2 microparticles (60wt.%) or with additional SiO2 nanoparticles (5 or 10wt.%). Properties including abrasion, polymerization shrinkage and mechanical properties were evaluated to determine the contribution of SiO2 nanofibers. In comparison with SiO2 nanoparticles, SiO2 nanofibers improved the overall performance of Bis-GMA/TEGDMA composite resins, especially in improving abrasion resistance and decreasing polymerization shrinkage. The explanations were that one-dimensional SiO2 nanofibers were able to shield particular fillers from being abraded off, and able to form a kind of overlapped fibrous network to resist polymerization shrinkage. With these approaches, SiO2 nanofiber-containing Bis-GMA composite resins were envisioned a promising choice to achieve long-term durable restorations in clinical therapies.

Abstract:Lipopolysaccharides (LPS), otherwise termed 'endotoxins', are outer-membrane constituents of Gram-negative bacteria. Lipopolysaccharides play a key role in the pathogenesis of 'Septic Shock', a major cause of mortality in the critically ill patient. Therapeutic options aimed at limiting downstream systemic inflammatory processes by targeting lipopolysaccharide do not exist at the present time. We have defined the pharmacophore necessary for small molecules to specifically bind and neutralize LPS, and have shown using animal models of sepsis that the sequestration of circulatory LPS by small molecules is a therapeutically viable strategy. Assays reported previously in the literature do not lend themselves well to the rapid screening of large numbers of structurally diverse compounds. In this report, we describe a highly sensitive and robust fluorescent displacement assay using BODIPY TR cadaverine (BC), which binds specifically to the toxic center of LPS, lipid A, and is competitively displaced by compounds displaying an affinity for lipid A. The assay clearly discriminates subtle differences in the binding of polymyxin B, and its nonapeptide derivative, with LPS. The spectral properties of the BODIPY fluorophore are ideally suited for screening diverse structural classes of compounds, including those with conjugated aromatic groups, or with chromophores in the 260-500 nm range. The fluorescent probe: LPS complex is stable under physiologically relevant salt concentrations, resulting in the rapid rejection of spurious binders interacting via non-specific electrostatic interactions, and, therefore, in greatly improved dispersion of ED(50)values.
Breast and Colorectal Cancer Screening and Sources of Cancer Information Among Older Women in the United States: Results From the 2003 Health Information National Trends Survey

Abstract:Introduction The number of people in the United States aged 65 years and older is increasing. Older people have a higher risk of dying from cancer; however, recent information about breast and colorectal cancer screening rates among women aged 65 years and older and about sources of health information consulted by these women is limited. Methods We examined data from the Health Information National Trends Survey for women aged 65 years and older who had no personal history of breast or colorectal cancer. Women whose self-reported race and ethnicity was non-Hispanic white, non-Hispanic black, or Hispanic were included in the analysis. The overall response rate for the 2003 survey was 34.5%. Results Women aged 75 years and older had lower rates of recent mammography (mammogram in previous 2 years) than did women aged 65 to 74 years. In both age groups, rates were especially low for Hispanic women and women with a household income of less than $15,000 per year. Rates of recent colorectal cancer screening (fecal occult blood test in previous year or endoscopy in previous 5 years) were markedly lower for non-Hispanic black women aged 75 years and older than for other women in this age group, and for Hispanic women aged 65 to 74 years than for non-Hispanic women in this age group. Screening rates were lowest for women with an annual household income of less than $15,000, no family history of cancer, no usual health care provider, or 1 or no provider visits in the previous year. Differences were found in the groups' preferred channel for receiving health information. Women who had had a mammogram in the previous 2 years were more likely to pay attention to health information on the radio or in newspapers and magazines than were women who had not received a recent mammogram. Women who had had a recent colorectal cancer screening test were more likely to pay attention to health information in magazines or on the Internet than were those who had not. Personalized print and other publications were the most preferred channel for receiving health information. Conclusion The results from this analysis suggest that educational materials about routine breast and colorectal cancer screening appropriate for women aged 65 years and older (especially low-income women, Hispanic women, and those aged 65 to 74 years) may be helpful.
Polymer implant materials with improved X-ray opacity and biocompatibility

Abstract:Poly(methyl methacrylate) samples containing 28 wt% inorganic fillers such as zirconium oxide, barium sulphate, zinc oxide, magnesium oxide and tricalcium phosphate were prepared and studied for their suitability as implant materials by physical property tests, X-ray opacity measurement, cell culture, and animal implantations. Addition of inorganic fillers to poly(methyl methacrylate) increased the compressive strength but decreased the transverse strength. Zirconium oxide was found to be most suitable as an X-ray opaque filler, and tricalcium phosphate showed superior biocompatibility when added to poly(methyl methacrylate) in cell culture experiments. The zirconium oxide and tricalcium phosphate composites evoked no greater unfavourable tissue reaction in rats than pure poly(methyl methacrylate). From the physical and biological standpoints zirconium oxide is the radiopaque filler of choice to be incorporated in poly(methyl methacrylate) implant material and addition of tricalcium phosphate could improve it's biocompatibility.

Abstract:Purpose To evaluate the impact of varying concentrations of 3 mol% yttria‐stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystalline ceramic (3Y‐TZP) nanoparticles on mechanical properties of three‐dimensional (3D)‐printed resins in stereolithography (SLA) technology. Materials and Methods A total of four groups (n = 6) of specimens were printed. Pure 3D‐printed resin was used as the control group (0 wt%). For the experimental groups, modified 3Y‐TZP nanoparticles were dispersed into 3D‐printed resin at 1, 3, and 5 wt% concentrations to fabricate nanocomposites. Mechanical tests, including degree of conversion (DC), flexural strength, flexural modulus, fractography, and hardness, were evaluated and analyzed by one‐way analysis of variance followed by the Games–Howell post‐hoc test or Tukey post‐hoc test (α = 0.05). Results The DC of the control group showed the lowest value (p < 0.0001). The DC values peaked at the 5 wt% group, with no significant difference between the 3 wt% group. The flexural strength and modulus of the experimental groups were significantly higher than those in the control group. The addition of 1 and 3 wt% 3Y‐TZP nanoparticles significantly improved the flexural strength and modulus (p < 0.05), while 5 wt% resulted in a significant decrease. The 1 wt% group showed the lowest hardness value. Maximum hardness value was observed in the 3 wt% group (p < 0.05). No significant difference was observed between the control and 5 wt% groups (p = 0.428). Conclusion Optimal mechanical properties were obtained with the 3 wt% group, indicating its potential as a dental material in clinical application.

Abstract:This article explores the properties of composite materials employed in dental fillings. A traditional nano-hybrid composite containing nanofiller particles exceeding 82% by weight served as a benchmark. The remaining samples were fabricated from ormocer resin, maintaining an identical nanofiller content of 84%. In all specimens, the nanoparticles were dispersed randomly within the matrix. This study presents findings from investigations into surface geometry, hardness, wettability, and tribological behavior. The microscopic observations revealed that ormocer-based samples exhibited greater surface roughness than those composed of the traditional composite. Hardness testing indicated that both ceramic addition and sample preparation significantly influenced mechanical properties. Ceramic-enhanced samples demonstrated superior hardness, surpassing the reference composite by 30% and 43%, respectively. Contact angle measurements revealed hydrophilic characteristics in the classic composite, contrasting with the hydrophobic nature of ceramic-containing samples. Tribological evaluations revealed the superiority of the classic composite in terms of friction coefficients and volumetric wear compared to ormocer-based materials.

3D micro-CT and O-PTIR spectroscopy bring new understanding of the influence of filler content in dental resin composites

Abstract:Background: Dental resin composites' performance is intricately linked to their polymerisation shrinkage characteristics. This study compares polymerisation shrinkage using advanced 3D micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) and traditional 2D linear assessments. It delves into the crucial role of filler content on shrinkage and the degree of conversion in dental resin composites, providing valuable insights for the field. Methods: Five experimental dental composite materials were prepared with increasing filler contents (55-75 wt%) and analysed using either 3D micro-CT for volumetric shrinkage or a custom-designed linometer for 2D linear shrinkage. The degree of conversion was assessed using Optical Photothermal Infrared (O-PTIR) and Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Light transmittance through a 2-mm layer was evaluated using a NIST-calibrated spectrometer. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX) examined surface morphology and elemental distribution. Correlation between the investigated parameters was determined using Spearman correlation analyses. Results: The study found significant differences in polymerisation-related properties among different filler content categories, with volumetric shrinkage consistently demonstrating higher mean values than linear shrinkage across most groups. Volumetric shrinkage decreased with increasing curing depth, showing no direct correlation between filler content and shrinkage levels at different curing depths. The results highlighted a strong negative correlation between filler content and degree of conversion, volumetric and linear shrinkage, as well as maximum shrinkage rate. Light transmittance showed a moderate correlation with the filler content and a weak correlation with other tested parameters. Conclusions: This study underscores the importance of considering both volumetric and linear shrinkage in the design and analysis of dental composite materials. The findings advocate optimising filler content to minimise shrinkage and enhance material performance. Integrating micro-CT and O-PTIR techniques offers novel insights into dental composites' polymerisation behaviour, providing a foundation for future research to develop materials with improved clinical outcomes.

Abstract:This study investigated the mechanical, microstructural, and biological properties of 3Y-TZP/Ti6Al4V functionally graded material (FGM) fabricated by the spark plasma sintering (SPS) method. For this purpose, 11 layers of 100-x vol% Ti6Al4V/x vol% Yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) (x = 0 to 100) were sintered at 1450 °C and a pressure of 30 MPa for 8 min. To investigate the properties of each layer in more detail, 11 batches of 100-x vol% (Ti6Al4V)/x vol% YSZ (x = 0 to 100) composites were sintered separately with the same sintering conditions mentioned for the FGM sample. Phase identification of the FGM sample showed the formation of Ti 3 O, c-ZrO 2, and Zr 3 O phases as by-products. A schematic model was proposed for the formation of the mentioned phases with the aid of thermodynamic calculations. The formation of these phases was confirmed by microstructural and elemental tests. The results of the relative density of the samples showed that these values were obtained for each layer above 99%. The microhardness of 590 ± 18 Vickers was obtained for Ti6Al4V; by increasing the amount of 3Y-TZP, this value reached 1510 ± 24 Vickers for the YSZ sample. The fracture toughness value for Ti6Al4V was 39.2 ± 2 MPa m 0.5 , which was significantly reduced to 4.84 ± 1 MPa m 0.5 by adding 10 vol% YSZ. After that, with the further increase of YSZ, this value increased slowly. A similar trend was observed for the bending strength of the samples. By increasing 3Y-TZP from 0 to 30 vol%, the bending strength was decreased from 1556 ± 32 to 272 ± 62 MPa. By further increasing the amount of 3Y-TZP from 30 to 100 vol%, an increase in the bending strength was observed in the samples, which reached 1180 ± 71 MPa for the YSZ sample. The FGM sample showed a brittle fracture despite a metal layer, but a higher bending strength (982 ± 44 MPa) was obtained for this structure than the composite samples. The biological results show that increasing YSZ content leads to a decrease in antimicrobial activity. Additionally, all samples demonstrated high biocompatibility based on MTT cytotoxicity tests after 1 and 7 days of culture.

Abstract:Objective: This work investigates the graft polymerization of acrylic acid onto nanoclay platelets to be utilized as reinforcing fillers in an experimental dental adhesive. Physical and mechanical properties of the adhesive and its shear bond strength to dentin are studied. The effect of the modification on the stability of the nanoparticle dispersion in the dilute adhesive is also investigated. Materials and methods: Poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) was grafted onto the pristine Na-MMT nanoclay (Cloisite(®) Na(+)) through the free radical polymerization of acylic acid in an aqueous media. The resulting PAA-g-nanoclay was characterized using FTIR, TGA and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The modified nanoclays were added to an experimental dental adhesive in different concentrations and the morphology of the nanoclay layers in the photocured adhesive matrix was studied using TEM and XRD. Shear bond strength of the adhesives containing different filler contents was tested on the human premolar teeth. The stability of nanoclay dispersion in the dilute adhesive was also studied using a separation analyzer. The results were then statistically analyzed and compared. Results: The results confirmed the grafting reaction and revealed a partially exfoliated structure for the PAA-g-nanoclay. Incorporation of 0.2 wt.% of the modified nanoclay into the experimental adhesive provided higher shear bond strength. The dispersion stability of the modified nanoparticles in the dilute adhesive was also enhanced more than 25 times. Significance: Incorporation of the modified particles as reinforcing fillers into the adhesive resulted in higher mechanical properties. The nanofiller containing bonding agent also showed higher shear bond strength due to the probable interaction of the carboxylic acid functional groups on the surface of the modified particles with hydroxyapatite of dentin.

Abstract:ObjectivesThis study aims to evaluate the effect of non-thermal plasma (NTP) surface treatment in two composite inorganic fillers and evaluate their impact on the chemical-mechanical properties and bond strength ability of experimental resin cements.Materials and methodsYtterbium fluoride (YF) and barium silicate glass (BS) were characterized and submitted to different surface treatments: non-thermal plasma (NTP); non-thermal plasma and 3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyl methacrylate silanization; and 3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyl methacrylate silanization. Untreated fillers were used as a control. The fillers were incorporated at 65wt% concentration into light-cured experimental resin cements (50wt% BisGMA; 25wt% UDMA; 25wt% TEGDMA; 1mol% CQ). The degree of conversion, the flexural strength, and the microshear bond strength (μSBS) were evaluated to characterize developed composites.ResultsYF and BS were successfully cleaned with NTP treatment. Nor NTP neither the silanization affected the degree of conversion of resin cements. The NTP predicted an increase in YF-containing resin cements flexural strength, reducing the storage impact in these materials. NTP treatment did not affect the μSBS when applied to YF, while silanization was effective for BS-containing materials.ConclusionNTP treatment of inorganic particles was possible and was shown to reduce the amount of organic contamination of the particle surface. YF surface treatment with NTP can be an alternative to improve the organic/inorganic interaction in resin composites to obtain materials with better mechanical properties.Clinical relevanceSurface cleaning with NTP may be an alternative for particle surface cleaning to enhance organic-inorganic interaction in dental composites resulting in improved mechanical strength of experimental resin cements.
