Abstract:The power grid CO2 emission factor is a critical parameter for accurately calculating indirect emissions from the electricity consumption side, serving as a core indicator for precisely quantifying the CO2 emission pathways at the consumption side. This study explores the temporal and spatial characteristics of the province-level power-grid CO2 emission factors from 2020 to 2035 and compares them with official-source factors. Moreover, it integrates historical direct-emission data to accurately quantify the importance of indirect emissions from the electricity consumption side. Additionally, it predicts the province-level indirect emissions and emission pathways under different scenarios from 2020 to 2035, quantifying the impacts of power grid CO2 emission factors with distinct temporal and spatial accuracies on provincial emission pathways. The results indicate that: (1) from 2020 to 2035, the power grid CO2 emission factors of all provinces are expected to exhibit sustained decreasing trends, and there are disparities between the existing publicly available power-grid CO2 emission factors and provincial levels in the study. (2) From 2010 to 2020, the indirect emissions from electricity consumption and their proportions in net electricity-importing provinces had gradually increased, with Beijing, Shanghai, and Zhejiang province having the largest proportions. (3) Under Scenarios 1 (constant power-grid CO2 emission factors on the national level) and 3 (constant power-grid CO2 emission factors on the provincial level), the indirect emissions from electricity consumption and total emissions of all provinces will be significantly higher than the estimated results in Scenarios 2 (dynamic power-grid CO2 emission factor on the national level) and 4 (dynamic power-grid CO2 emission factor on the provincial level). The estimation results of Scenarios 1 and 2 are projected to differ significantly from those of Scenarios 3 and 4. For provinces with large proportions of indirect emissions from electricity consumption, such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangdong, selecting power grid CO2 emission factors with different spatial accuracies is expected to have noticeable impacts on their total emissions, further leading to shifts in their peaking years. The research results can provide a reference for supporting the planning of carbon peaking pathways in various provinces and reducing the uncertainty in indirect emission forecasts.
Optimization of Electricity Generation and Assessment of Provincial Grid Emission Factors from 2020 to 2060 in China

Abstract:The developmental trajectory of provincial power grids in alignment with dual-carbon goals requires the systematical prediction of China's provincial power grids. In this study, a comprehensive electricity production optimization model covering all 31 provinces in mainland China is developed to simulate and optimize the provincial operation of the power sector for 2020-2060 under a reference scenario and two renewable energy development scenarios. Then, dynamic, province-specific, and yearly grid CO 2 emission factors and relative direct and indirect emissions from both the producer and consumer sides are evaluated. We find significant increases in renewable energy installed capacity and power generation, with yearly growth rates of 6.40% and 5.29%, respectively, from 2020 to 2060. Solar and wind power generation will contribute the most to the national installed capacity and power generation (79.03% and 56.03%, respectively, in 2060). Notably, Inner Mongolia is projected to represent the majority of national solar and wind power generation, with the largest mitigation potential, but the highest grid CO 2 emission factor. Substantial reductions in grid CO 2 emission factors (by 12.54%) and associated CO 2 emissions (by 19.73%) are linked to renewable energy development in the power sector. Our results help highlight the effectiveness of renewable energy development and facilitate future provincial policymaking.

Abstract:The power generation industry in China is at the forefront of implementing carbon trading market policies, playing a crucial role in carbon emission reduction. Carbon allocation in each province is pivotal for future economic development and achieving a gradual and orderly carbon peak. By analyzing total carbon emissions from 2012 to 2021 and examining emission responsibilities from a producer perspective, this study extends the STIRPAT model to evaluate factors influencing carbon emissions in the national and provincial power generation sectors. Key findings highlight the urgent need for industrial structure changes in provinces like Xinjiang, Tibet, Guangdong, Shandong, and Jiangsu, which bear significant emission reduction responsibilities. The spatial and temporal distribution of carbon emissions is shifting from the southeast coast to central and western regions. Factors such as energy consumption, electric power intensity, urbanization rate, power structure, economic development level, and industrial composition significantly impact carbon emissions. To achieve carbon peak goals, a multifaceted approach is essential for reducing emissions in China's power generation sector, emphasizing the need for strategic interventions across various perspectives.

Abstract:Carbon emissions from the electricity industry (CEEI) account for more than 40% of China's total emissions. This paper examines the influential factors of China's CEEI at both national and provincial level and explores targeted provincial strategies, which are critical for China to control its CEEI effectively and to achieve its carbon peaking aim. First, this study quantifies the contributions of nine factors influencing China's CEEI increase using Logistic Mean Divided Index (LMDI) decomposition. The results show that economic growth is the dominant driver, while power consumption intensity, energy intensity of thermal power generation (TPG) and power mix are the main inhibitors. After stepping into the new era in 2012, in general, the evolutions of all the 4 main factors aided CEEI control. Second, according to the recent status of the main factors, we classify 30 provinces into 4 groups with K-means clustering. And then, based on the characteristics of each group, the paper puts forward provincial targeted recommendations to address the rebound of CEEI since 2017 and to promote the low-carbon transformation of China's electricity industry. This study confirms that it is a promising direction for LMDI model to combine with cluster analysis and proposes a basic flow for this combination: LMDI → main influencing factors → clustering variables → cluster analysis → targeted strategies, which will conduce to deepen LMDI applications.

Abstract:Abstract As the proportion of electricity in final energy consumption gradually increases, CO2 emissions reduction actions in the power system will become the key to achieving China’s carbon-peak and carbon-neutrality goals. It is essential to analyse and quantify the driving forces of CO2 emissions from electricity generation in the fossil-rich area in China. This paper aims to identify the characteristics of CO2 emissions generated by electricity and provide a basis for formulating CO2-reduction policies in power systems. First, we analyse the current state of CO2 emissions from electricity generation in Anhui Province that was dominated by fossil energy during the period 2010–19. Then, we apply the logarithmic mean Divisia index method to find the nature of the factors influencing the changes in CO2 emissions. Finally, we analyse the CO2-reduction measures of each side of the source–network–load–storage of the power system in Anhui through a power-system carbon-reduction path analysis model proposed in this study and provide policy suggestions. The results showed the following. (i) CO2 emissions in Anhui Province continued to increase from 2010 to 2019 and the trend in the growth rate of CO2 emissions presented approximately a u-shaped curve. (ii) Economic activity has always been the dominant factor driving the growth of electricity CO2 emissions. The increase in the proportion of renewable energy in power generation, the improvement in thermal power-conversion efficiency and the decrease in the intensity of power consumption are the three major driving factors for the reduction in CO2 emissions from power generation in Anhui. (iii) The CO2-reduction measures of the power system are provided in each link of the source–network–load–storage, such as developing the photovoltaic industry and building energy storage, upgrading and transforming coal-fired power stations, reducing the loss rate of transmission lines on the grid side and improving the efficiency of the utilization of electricity on the user side.

Abstract:China's coal-fired power industry contributes about half of the country's total emissions and is undergoing active transformation in response to internal improvements related to efficiency and external forces related to the increasing penetration of variable renewable energy into China's grids. Together, these changes are slowing the rate of growth in emissions, but the effects of individual policy measures are difficult to discern. In this study, we develop a high-resolution inventory of emissions factors for the coal-fired power industry in China, apply it to developing province-level emission factors, and demonstrate the relative effectiveness of four policy measures internal to the coal-fired power industry (namely, raising the entry threshold, eliminating outdated capacity, improving existing plants and enhancing operation loads) relative to external contributions from renewable power development in different provinces across China. We provide data for 49 power plant configurations covering 99.7% of the existing coal-fired power fleet in China during the 13th Five Year Plan period (2016-2020). We find that the provincial carbon emission factors of the coal-fired power industry are expected to decrease by 40-60 g CO(2)eq/kWh in 2020 compared with 2016, corresponding to a total carbon reduction potential of 265 Mt CO(2)eq across the industry. The four driving factors contribute various reductions in the carbon intensity by province and result in decreases in total emissions in Shanghai, Zhejiang and Beijing. For comparison, we calculate that the decarbonization potential from non-coal power deployment is 593Mt CO(2)eq in 2020 compared with 2016, with the province-to-province variability mostly depending on the endowment of the non-coal resources. The variation across the country suggests that strategies for continued decarbonization beyond 2020 should be tailored to the specific situation in each province. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:AbstractWIth the introduction of “carbon peak and neutrality” targets, China’s power industry is under enormous pressure to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, as it produces more than 40% of emissions. In response, China’s power industry is actively reducing the investment in thermal energy and gradually shifting toward non-fossil energy sources. However, the CO2 reduction effect of these measures is still unknown. This study aims to analyze CO2 emissions from China’s power industry from 2009 to 2018 from an entire lifecycle perspective, considering that CO2 emissions also exist in non-fossil power generation. The logarithmic mean Divisia index (LMDI) method is employed to identify the factors influencing CO2 emissions. Then, the modified STochastic Impacts by Regression on Population, Affluence and Technology model is used for comparative validation. The results show that (1) CO2 emissions from China’s power industry increased significantly, from 276.5 million tons of CO2 equivalent (Mtce) in 2009 to 436.44 Mtce in 2018; (2) the investment intensity, investment structure, and emission intensity dampen CO2 emissions, with cumulative contribution rates of − 28.88%, − 11.89%, and − 3.16%, respectively. The investment efficiency, economic development level, and population size contribute to CO2 emissions, with cumulative contribution rates of 29.76, 24.68, and 1.07%, respectively; and (3) Investment into the hydropower contributes the least to CO2 emissions, followed by wind, nuclear, photovoltaic, and thermal power. These research findings suggest that the power industry should improve its investment decision-making capabilities and pay particular attention to the hydropower-led non-fossil energy sector.

Abstract:The expansion of China's coal-fired power industry is facing enormous pressure to reduce carbon emissions in the context of global decarbonization. Existing national-level carbon accounting is insufficient to support developing carbon reduction policies and measures tailored for specific locations. In this study, we conducted a spatially high-resolution analysis to estimate life-cycle carbon emissions from the coal-fired power industry at the province-level. The estimate is from a bottom-up perspective, including computing carbon emission factors for 22 coal-fired power technologies based on the operation data of 47.8 % of all units, measuring provincial technology structures based on the information data of 99.7 % of all ones, and weighted calculating the above two terms. We also analyzed the carbon reduction potential of the coal-fired power industry according to relevant measures by province. The estimate shows great differences in carbon emission factors of various technologies. The coupling of these factors with different technology structures causes significant variations of 0.933–1.019 kg CO2eq/kWh in the carbon emission factors of the coal-fired power industry at the province-level. In 2016, carbon emissions from China's coal-fired power industry were 3835 Mt CO2eq and intensive in the northern and eastern provinces. From 2016 to 2020, carbon emission factors in most provinces will decrease by 3 %–6 % benefiting from technology structure optimization and energy conservation. The falling of carbon emission factors leads to a carbon reduction potential of 307 Mt CO2eq in total. In particular, Beijing and Shandong achieve negative growth in carbon emissions from the coal-fired power industry during this period.

A region-scale decoupling effort analysis of carbon dioxide emissions from the perspective of electric power industry: a case study of China

Abstract:The goal of carbon peak and carbon neutralization puts forward higher requirements for the energy and electricity industry development in China. Jing-jin-ji region (short for Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei Provinces) as an important economic growth pole in China, its electric power industry realizing low-carbon transformation can play a good exemplary role nationwide. To clarify the key factors affecting carbon dioxide emission from electric power industry and analyze the relationship between emission and regional economic growth, the paper established decoupling effort model based on LMDI two phases decomposition model and Tapio decoupling index. Firstly, we collected the data of Jing-jin-ji region from 2000 to 2017 and conducted factors decomposition. The results show that: among the ten key factors affecting electric power industry CO2 emission, power generation and consumption ratio, fossil energy consumption coefficient and industrial structure have the most significant effect on CO2 emission reduction, with contribution rates of − 23.27, − 16.50 and − 11.91%, respectively. Per capita GDP and total population are the main positive driving factors, with contribution rates of 132.20% and 23.38%, respectively. Then from the perspective of decoupling relationship, the electric power industry in Jing-jin-ji region has entered a weak decoupling state since the Eleventh Five Year Plan with the decoupling index declined from 0.85 in 2004 to 0.38 in 2017. Excluding the influence of economic development, there are six driving factors to realize the weak decoupling, including (1) Power generation and consumption ratio effect, (2) Industrial structure effect, (3) Industrial power consumption intensity effect, (4) Fossil energy consumption coefficient, (5) Thermal power proportion effect and (6) Fossil energy power generation structure effect, in which the decoupling degree decreases in turn. The total population effect, transmission and distribution loss effect and resident power consumption intensity effect have not achieved decoupling status. At last, based on the model calculation results, we put forward suggestions to promote the low-carbon development of power industry in Jing-jin-ji region, for example, accelerate industrial structure upgrading and the adjustment of power generation structure; Strengthen electricity demand side management; Promote the construction of ultra-high voltage and smart grid as a whole.

Abstract:In 2010,half of the total CO2 emission in China comes from the power sector.As a result,power sector plays a leading role in climate change mitigation.Firstly,this article briefly describes the status quo of CO2 emission of power sector,then it continues to analyze and evaluate appropriate measures which are applied on the supply side,demand side and power grid.As per the analysis,virtual energy,including the energy-saving capacity on both the demand side and the power grid,together with conventional energy on the supply side,are implemented for the integrated optimization model of CO2 emission mitigation in the power sector.Throughout the implementation of the model,the optimal plan of energy distribution with respect to both the economic benefits and mitigation benefits can be found.The results show that the development of the demand side management(DSM) and the smart grid can contribute a lot to CO2 emission mitigation of the power sector,reducing the CO2 emissions by 10.0% and 12.6% respectively in 2015 and 2020.
Economic Development and Carbon Dioxide Emissions in China: Provincial Panel Data Analysis

Abstract:This paper investigates the driving forces, emission trends and reduction potential of China's carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions based on a provincial panel data set covering the years 1995 to 2009. A series of static and dynamic panel data models are estimated, and then an optimal forecasting model selected by out-of-sample criteria is used to forecast the emission trend and reduction potential up to 2020. The estimation results show that economic development, technology progress and industry structure are the most important factors affecting China's CO2 emissions, while the impacts of energy consumption structure, trade openness and urbanization level are negligible. The inverted U-shaped relationship between per capita CO2 emissions and economic development level is not strongly supported by the estimation results. The impact of capital adjustment speed is significant. Scenario simulations further show that per capita and aggregate CO2 emissions of China will increase continuously up to 2020 under any of the three scenarios developed in this study, but the reduction potential is large.

Abstract:In Escherichia coli, secretory proteins (preproteins) are translocated across the cytoplasmic membrane by the Sec system composed of a protein-conducting channel, SecYEG, and an ATP-dependent motor protein, SecA. After binding of the preprotein to SecYEG-bound SecA, cycles of ATP binding and hydrolysis by SecA are thought to drive the stepwise translocation of the preprotein across the membrane. To address how the length of a preprotein substrate affects the SecA-driven translocation process, we constructed derivatives of the precursor of the outer membrane protein A (proOmpA) with 2, 4, 6, and 8 in-tandem repeats of the periplasmic domain. With increasing polypeptide length, an increasing delay in the time before full-length translocation was observed, but the translocation rate expressed as amino acid translocation per minute remained constant. These data indicate that in the ATP-dependent reaction, SecA drives a constant rate of preprotein translocation consistent with a stepping mechanism of translocation.
Exploring the driving forces and scenario analysis for China's provincial peaks of CO2 emissions

Abstract:Understanding the drivers and peaks of CO2 emissions at the provincial level plays a crucial role in achieving the goals of China's CO2 emissions peak by 2030. This research combines the spatial-temporal Logarithmic Mean Division Index with scenario analysis to empirically explore the drivers and peaks of CO2 emissions in 30 provinces in China during 1997 and 2020, considering COVID-19 effects. The results show that the energy structure has replaced the energy intensity as the main factor of emission reduction in 2020. The CO2 emission driving mechanism at the provincial level is different from that at the country level. The population restrains the CO2 emissions in Heilongjiang, Sichuan, and Guizhou. The energy structure increases CO2 emissions in Hainan, Ningxia, Shanxi, and Xinjiang. The role of driving factors to CO2 emissions varies greatly among provinces. The population effect is strong in Shandong, Guangdong, and Henan. The economic effect is significant in Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Tianjin. The energy intensity effect is remarkable in Shanxi, Ningxia, and Inner Mongolia. The energy structure effect is profound in Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, and Henan. Based on our findings, China's CO2 emissions peak will occur in 2030 and 2025 under baseline and green development scenarios. Many provinces have already reached their peaks, including Chongqing, Yunnan, Beijing, Tianjin, Qinghai, Shanghai, Jilin, Hubei, Heilongjiang, Hebei, Sichuan, Anhui, Guizhou, and Henan. However, Xinjiang and Shanxi will not reach their peaks by 2030. Based on the findings, this paper put forward several policy implications.

Abstract:The low-carbon transformation of the power industry is of great significance to realize the carbon peak in advance. However, almost a third of China’s CO2 emissions came from the power sector in 2019. This paper aimed to identify the key drivers of CO2 emissions in China’s power industry with the consideration of spatial autocorrelation. The spatial Durbin model and relative importance analysis were combined based on Chinese provincial data from 2003 to 2019. This combination demonstrated that GDP, the power supply structure and energy intensity are the key drivers of CO2 emissions in China’s power industry. The self-supply ratio of electricity and the spatial spillover effect have a slight effect on increasing CO2 emissions. The energy demand structure and CO2 emission intensity of thermal power have a positive effect, although it is the lowest. Second, the positive impact of GDP on CO2 emissions is decreasing, but that of the power supply structure and energy intensity is increasing. Third, the energy demand of the industrial and residential sectors has a greater impact on CO2 emissions than that of construction and transportation. For achieving the CO2 emission peak in advance, governments should give priority to developing renewable power and regional electricity trade rather than upgrading thermal power generation. They should also focus on promoting energy-saving technology, especially tapping the energy-saving potential of the industry and resident sectors.

Abstract:Magnetization transfer contrast imaging using turbo spin echo and continuous wave off-resonance irradiation was carried out on rat brain in vivo at 4.7 T. By systematically varying the off-resonance irradiation power and the offset-frequency, the signal intensities obtained under steady-state for both transverse and longitudinal magnetization were successfully analyzed with a simple binary spin-bath model taking into account a free water compartment and a pool of protons with restricted motions bearing a super-Lorentzian lineshape. Due to important RF power deposition, such experimental conditions are not practical for routine imaging on humans. An extension of the model was derived to describe the system for shorter off-resonance pulse duration, i.e., when the longitudinal magnetization of the free protons has not reached a steady-state. Data sets obtained for three regions of interest, namely the corpus callosum, the basal ganglia, and the temporal lobe, were correctly interpreted for off-resonance pulse durations varying from 0.3 to 3 s. The parameter sets obtained from the calculations made it possible to predict the contrast between the different regions as a function of the pulse power, the offset frequency, and pulse duration. Such an approach could be extended to contrast prediction for human brain at 1.5 T.

Abstract:The realisation of the low-carbon transition of the energy system in resource-intensive regions, as embodied by Shanxi Province, depends on a thorough understanding of the factors impacting the power sector's carbon emissions and an accurate prediction of the peak trend. Because of this, the power industry's carbon emissions in Shanxi province are measured in this article from 1995 to 2020 using data from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). To obtain a deeper understanding of the factors impacting carbon emissions in the power sector, factor decomposition is performed using the Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index (LMDI). Second, in order to precisely mine the relationship between variables and carbon emissions, the Sparrow Search Algorithm (SSA) aids in the optimisation of the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM). In order to implement SSA-LSTM-based carbon peak prediction in the power industry, four development scenarios are finally built up. The findings indicate that: (1) There has been a fluctuating upward trend in Shanxi Province's total carbon emissions from the power industry between 1995 and 2020, with a cumulative growth of 372.10 percent. (2) The intensity of power consumption is the main factor restricting the rise of carbon emissions, contributing -65.19%, while the per capita secondary industry contribution factor, contributing 158.79%, is the main driver of the growth in emissions. (3) While the baseline scenario and the rapid development scenario fail to peak by 2030, the low carbon scenario and the green development scenario peak at 243,991,100 tonnes and 258,828,800 tonnes, respectively, in 2025 and 2028. (4) Based on the peak performance and the decomposition results, resource-intensive cities like Shanxi's power industry should concentrate on upgrading and strengthening the industrial structure, getting rid of obsolete production capacity, and encouraging the faster development of each factor in order to help the power sector reach peak carbon performance.
Study on factors influencing carbon dioxide emissions and carbon peak heterogenous pathways in Chinese provinces

Abstract:Implementing a Carbon Peak Action Plan at the regional level requires comprehensive consideration of the developmental heterogeneity among different provinces, which is an effective pathway for China to realize the goal of carbon peak by 2030. However, there is currently no clear provincial roadmap for carbon peak, and existing studies on carbon peak pathways inadequately address provincial heterogeneity. Therefore, this paper employs the Stochastic Impacts by Regression on Population, Affluence, and Technology (STIRPAT) model to decompose assess 8 factors influencing carbon emissions of 30 provinces. According to scenario analysis, the paper explores the differentiated pathways for provincial carbon peaks based on policy expectation indicators (including population, economy, and urbanization rate) and comprises policy control indicators (including the energy structure, energy efficiency, industrial structure, transportation structure, and innovation input). The results indicate that population, per capita GDP, urbanization rate, and innovation input are the primary factors for influencing (negatively) the growth of carbon emissions. In contrast, the optimization and upgrading of the industrial structure, energy intensity, energy structure, and transportation structure have mitigating effects on carbon emissions, especially for the first two factors. The forecasting results reveal that robust regulations of the energy and industry can effectively accelerate carbon peak at a reduced magnitude. If developed at BAU, China cannot achieve carbon peak by 2030, continuing an upward trend. However, by maximizing the adjustment strength of energy and industrial transformation within the scope of provincial capabilities, China could achieve carbon peak as early as 2025, with a peak of 12.069 billion tons. In this scenario, 24 provinces could achieve carbon peak before 2030. Overall, this study suggests the feasibility of differentiated pathway to achieve carbon peaks in China, exploring the carbon peak potential and paths of 30 provinces, and identifying provinces where carbon peak is more challenging. It also provides a reference for the design of carbon peak roadmaps at both provincial and national levels and offers targeted recommendations for the implementation of differentiated policy strategies for the government.

Abstract:Earlier emission peak and higher reduction rate after the peak are crucial for China's domestic low-carbon energy transformations and the 2 degrees C global climate target. However, much remains to be resolved concerning long-term sectoral and regional coping strategies. In this study, we developed a spatial downscaling framework to identify the roles played by different provinces and sectors in promoting early emission peak, and the spatiotemporal variations of city-level reduction potentials for the building sector by coupling an integrated assessment model with openly available information. Simulations show that peaking emissions five years earlier means an additional 12.5 Gt CO2 emission cut during 2015-2035 and building sector needs to increase renewable penetration to 22% and further improve emission efficiency by 12%, which are both greater than other end use sectors. More developed eastern regions would peak earlier than national target and some central cities are expected to double their per capita building emissions. While for the less developed northern and western regions to peak on time it is necessary that the gap of CO2 emission intensity between these cities and national average narrow down from 9.8t/thousand RMB in 2020 to 5.9t/thousand RMB in 2030.

Abstract:Intracellular membrane traffic regulates cell physiology at multiple levels ranging from cell growth and development to the function of the nervous and immune systems. Multiple endocytic routes are used by distinct cargoes including ligands bound to their receptors but also viruses and pathogens to gain access to the cell interior. Within the endosomal system, proteins and lipids are sorted for degradation or recycling allowing cells to dynamically respond to environmental signals and to regulate cell shape and morphology. Some receptors or toxins are sorted along the retrograde pathway from endosomes to the Golgi complex, where they intersect with secretory cargo destined for exocytosis. Genetic manipulations of these pathways frequently cause problems with regard to data interpretation as the resulting phenotypes may be indirect consequences resulting from perturbation of multiple steps or trafficking routes. Hence, novel approaches are needed to acutely and reversibly perturb intracellular membrane traffic, e.g. by small molecule inhibitors. Such drugs may also be pharmacologically important as they offer new avenues to fight human diseases. Here, we provide an overview of the small molecules available to interfere with intracellular membrane traffic and outline strategies for future research.
Coal power demand and paths to peak carbon emissions in China: A provincial scenario analysis oriented by CO2-related health co-benefits

Abstract:Coal power sector plays a significant role in achieving carbon peaking in China. Due to the regional heterogeneity of socioeconomic level, peaking carbon emissions in coal power sector depends on the performances of China's provinces. This study aims to dynamically simulate the coal power demand and subsequent CO2 emissions in China's 29 provinces during 2020–2035, and evaluate CO2-related health co-benefits in life and economic loss. It is quantitatively found that the total coal power demand kept rising by 5.19% per year during 2009–2019. And the projection demand would still increase, ranging from 4687.26 ± 357.15 to 8897.13 ± 326.28 billion kW·h at the baseline. CO2 emissions under the rapid development scenario are less than in the other two scenarios, valuing 76.96 billion tons during the projection period. Results of spatial heterogeneity show that East China contributes to the most significant CO2 emissions, valuing 149.47, 156.11, and 190.21 mg/m3 of CO2 concentrations for 2020–2025, 2026–2030, and 2031–2035. Further, life and economic losses of CO2-related health impacts suggest significant health co-benefits of emission reduction. Our findings could provide a deeper understanding of potential peaking paths in coal power sector by provinces and assist policymakers in better establishing emissions reduction targets from a top-down perspective.
