Abstract:Based on China High Resolution Emission Gridded Data (CHRED), the spatial pattern and agglomeration characteristics of carbon dioxide emissions in Beijing-Tianjin-Heibei region and Yangtze River Delta region are analysed by means of exploratory spatial data analysis techniques (ESDA) and spatial regression model. By mean of significant test, we explore the spatial lag regression (SLM) and spatial error regression (SEM) method to reveal the influence factors of carbon emissions in urban agglomeration. The carbon emission in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region proves to be more in spatial randomness and structural instability with index of Moran's I value -0.131. However, the spatial agglomeration effects in the Yangtze River Delta region are obvious with index of Moran's I value 0.106 that neighbour regions pose great effect on carbon emissions. Population and economic factors are the main influence factors of carbon emissions in above mention two urban agglomerations. In general, the diffusion effect of carbon emissions in the Yangtze River Delta region proves to be more apparently. However the agglomeration effect of carbon emissions in Beijing-Tianjin-Heibei region is still obvious. Turning to multicentre of regional development is one of the important measure to solve the metropolitan malaise. And metropolitan region should strengthen the object control of divergent effect of carbon emissions, promote the integration of low-carbon development, and achieve regional carbon emissions balance.

Abstract:Massive carbon emissions resulting from global urbanization have been one of the main triggers of climate warming. Because of its scale and representativeness, China's urbanization has significantly affected the world's socioeconomic system. Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of the urban land development (ULD) process and its impact on carbon emission performance (CEP), using cities in China as an example, is crucial for achieving global climate goals. Thus, using 245 cities in China as examples, a new explanatory framework was developed to understand the multidimensional characteristics of ULD and their impact on CEP. The average ULD increased from 0.266 to 0.299 and stabilized from 2000 to 2019, with the gap between cities continuously narrowing. Average CEP increased from 0.634 to 0.663 and then decreased to 0.556, presenting an increasing distribution pattern from northwest to southeast. The coupling level between ULD and CEP decreased from the east coast inland. More than half of the cities retained their coupling levels, and 3.67% achieved leapfrog development. The higher the initial CEP level, the weaker the positive effect of an increase in ULD level on the coupling score. In addition, the influences of the multidimensional characteristics of ULD on CEP showed significant spatiotemporal heterogeneity at the country scale. Thus, this study proposes that the effect of the ULD on CEP is phased, which is highly correlated with the evolution of the coupling level. These findings highlight the necessity for city managers to incorporate the differential impacts of the multidimensional characteristics of ULD on CEP in the formulation of carbon emission reduction policies.

Abstract:The strategic coordination of a new urbanisation and carbon emissions (NU-CE) systems in China is essential for advancing low-carbon urbanisation and sustainable urban planning. This paper introduces an improved coupling coordination degree (CCD) model, spatial auto-correlation and other methods to evaluate past and future states of coordination. The data, which are collected from the period 2010–2019 and 30 provinces in China, demonstrate the temporal and spatial evolution characteristics of the NU-CE coupling relationship. The relevant results are fourfold. (1) The level of NU in China continues to rise, alongside significant spatial heterogeneity, which is particularly evident in the eastern coastal areas. (2) The CE subsystem fluctuates slightly, also revealing differences between the southern and northern regions, where Shanxi and Inner Mongolia have the lowest levels. (3) The NU-CE CCD in each province continuously improved during the study period, which is closely related to different development stages and geographic locations. As a result, a ladder-type pattern of gradual decline emerges from the eastern coastal region to central and western regions. (4) NU-CE CCD has significant positive spatial correlation characteristics. The high-high CCD area exhibits a tendency to shift towards the central region, and the low-low cluster area from the southwest to the northwest region. (5) Finally, the grey GM(1,1) prediction model is used to predict the CCD of 30 provinces in 2020–2024. The findings illustrate a growing state of NU-CE coordination and strengthening spatial correlations in the future. Based on the findings of this study, a series of policy suggestions for improving China's new urbanisation and carbon emissions is proposed.

Abstract:Chinese cities face challenges of uneven development, high carbon emission intensity, and low efficiency in urbanization processes. Achieving harmonization and equilibrium between urban development and carbon emissions is crucial for sustainable development. This paper analyzes the development trajectory from 2013 to 2021 of four urban agglomerations in China: Northeast China (NEC), Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH), Yangtze River Delta (YRD), and Pearl River Delta (PRD). It identifies and calculates the urban spatial development patterns and carbon emissions, comparing the spatial-temporal variations in carbon emissions under different urban development patterns. The study also explores the coupling coordination relationship between these two aspects at various stages. The findings suggest that urban spatial development and carbon emissions are often uncoordinated in shrinking cities. In terms of coordination within urban agglomerations, BTH and NEC show suboptimal development, characterized by overall lag and polarization; YRD exhibits the best development, being consistently stable and balanced; PRD is generally improving, though with some cities lagging. Planning departments should revise urban and environmental policies to optimize spatial structures and infrastructure, aligning with regional development and promoting synergy in urban agglomerations. This research provides theoretical and empirical support for China to formulate relevant policies aimed at green, coordinated, and sustainable urban development.

Spatiotemporal pattern and coordinating development characteristics of carbon emission performance and land use intensity in the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration

Abstract:Urban areas contribute about 75% of global carbon emissions in only about 2% of the world’s total land area. A significant contributor of urban areas accounts for global climate change. It is necessary to scientifically explore the coordinating development characteristics between urban carbon emission and land use in recent years. An important way is seeking to determine the parallel path between rational land resource use and low carbon ＆ emission reduction in cities, in order to promote the carbon neutrality goals at the basic level. Taking the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration as the study area, this study aims to analyze the coordinating development mechanism between carbon emission performance and land use intensity. The super-efficient slacks-based measure（SBM） model was also used to measure the carbon emission performance of each city from 2003 to 2018. The land use intensity of each city was then assessed to determine the spatial-temporal evolution pattern using continuous data on land use. The coordination model was utilized to reveal the coordinating development characteristics and dynamic evolution trend of carbon emission performance and land use intensity.The results showed that: 1) There was a two-stage change in the carbon emission performance in both space and time. The average value of carbon emission performance gradually increased from 0.63 to 0.77 from 2003 to 2013. Specifically, the high-value regions were concentrated in the coastal areas of Zhejiang and Jiangsu Province, whereas, the low-value regions were scattered in Huai’an, Lianyungang, and Huainan Province. By contrast, the average value of the carbon emission performance decreased slightly to 0.68 from 2013 to 2018, where there was a decreasing number of cities in the high-value regions. It infers that the regional energy saving and emission reduction fell into a short-lived bottleneck. 2) The average value of the regional land use intensity gradually increased from 349.74 to 356.63, with a clustered distribution pattern of the higher value in the north than in the south part of space. The low-value areas were mainly concentrated in some cities of Zhejiang Province in the south of the study area, while the high ones were located in the north, represented by Xuzhou in Jiangsu,Huaibei and Haozhou in Anhui Province. 3) A fluctuating upward trend was found in the coordination degree between carbon emission performance and land use intensity from 2003 to 2018. Among them, the low-value regions were mainly distributed in some cities of Zhejiang and Anhui Province in the southwestern part of the study area, whereas, the high ones were concentrated in Shanghai and coastal cities in Jiangsu Province, such as Yancheng and Nantong. There were also a higher average annual growth rate and an ever-increasing proportion of cities in the coordinating development, even in the transitional stage from 2003 to 2007. A plateau period was observed during low-carbon adjustment in the regional land use, particularly in the coordinating development stage from 2008 to 2018, but the growth rate gradually slowed down. In conclusion, the coordinating development between land use intensity and carbon emission performance can be expected as the land use planning for the low-carbon urban development in each city.

Abstract:Decoupling the level of new-type urbanization from carbon emissions is an essential representation of regional low-carbon sustainable development and a key indicator to ease resource and environmental constraints. By constructing a new-type urbanization evaluation index system and carbon emission measurement model, this paper takes 260 cities in China as research objects to investigate their horizontal pattern and spatial evolution characteristics from 2010 to 2022. Based on the Tapio decoupling model, decoupling catch-up model, and cointegration method, we discuss the dynamic evolutionary relationship between new-type urbanization construction and carbon emission of cities and the decisive factors affecting the decoupling state. The result shows that: (1) Both new-type urbanization and carbon emission levels showed an increasing trend in time, and their spatial distribution characteristics showed a "high-low–high" spatial pattern from east to west. (2) The number of cities that realized the decoupling of new-type urbanization and carbon emissions showed a U-shaped distribution, and the proportion of ordinary cities that realized the absolute catch-up was the highest among Tier III cities. (3) The cointegration and Granger causality test show that industrialization and energy consumption structure positively affect the stability of the decoupling state in the long term. At the same time, there is a negative relationship between technological progress and the stability of the decoupling state. (4) The level of new-type urbanization in the five dimensions of economy, society, environment, population, and space shows a trend of collaborative evolution in time and a specific differentiation in space. (5) The overall decoupling trend of Chinese cities is good, and the individual decoupling state of most cities fluctuates significantly. Coastal cities maintain a decoupling state during the study period, and their performance is relatively stable. The result can provide quantitative reference and decision-making basis for the construction of new-type urbanization and the implementation of dual-carbon strategy and also help promote the realization of high-quality decoupling and coordinated development of cities.

Abstract:Climate issues caused by energy consumption and related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from urbanization and industrialization have attracted growing attention worldwide. Accurate estimation of urban CO2 emissions and exploration of main driving factors behind are of great importance for achieving low-carbon development. In order to identify the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of CO2 emissions among Chinese cities, we integrate two kinds of nighttime light datasets and estimate CO2 emissions for 286 prefecture-level cities in China from 2000 to 2019, then characterize the spatiotemporal dynamics and their decoupling types with economic growth through Tapio decoupling model. Moreover, the random forest model and the partial dependence method are employed to explore the correlation between the urban CO2 emissions and thirteen socioeconomic driving factors, from which the key influencing factors are extracted. The results show that from 2000 to 2019, the total CO2 emissions of 286 prefecture-level cities increased and then fluctuated; meanwhile, the CO2 emissions intensity decreased, indicating that energy efficiency has been improved. Most cities with high emissions intensity and high per capita emissions agglomerated in the north China. The number of decoupling cities has increased, while that of coupling cities and negative decoupling cities has decreased. Regarding driving factors, economic development, industrialization, transportation, land urbanization, and the production and distribution of electricity, gas, and water were the leading socioeconomic factors driving the increase in CO2 emissions. This study has great theoretical and practical significance. It helps us not only to deeply understand the coupling relationship among resources, environment, and economic development but also to design effective low-carbon development pathways and improve urbanization quality.

Low-carbon pilot policy and development path in urban agglomerations of China: Mechanism analysis and stage identification

Abstract:Urban agglomeration (UA) plays as the main carrier of economy and society in China, concentrating the human activities, energy consumptions, and subsequent carbon emissions in space. The policy-induced mechanism of carbon emissions in the units of UA is currently less explored, and diversities of low-carbon development path of UAs remain unknown. Thus, this study analyzes the carbon emissions of 19 UAs in China from 2006 to 2019, focuses on the low-carbon city pilot policy (LCPP), constructs an SDM-DID model to investigate the impacts of LCPP on carbon emissions regionally, and delineates the stages of low-carbon development in UAs based on the theory of Environmental Kuznets Curve. The results show that carbon emissions of China's UAs are spatially distributed as higher in the east but lower in the west, and increase faster in the central. The effect of LCPP on carbon emissions is significant but inhibitory in the central and northeastern UAs, while it becomes insignificant in the eastern ones. Finally, the low-carbon development paths of all UAs are divided into Type I, strong Type I, Type II, Type III, and Type IV stage. The eastern UAs are all at Type I stage because they are more sensitive and ahead in terms of low-carbon development strategies. The findings of this study can provide references for city groups to formulate carbon reduction policies and decouple the relations between economic development and carbon emissions.
Coupling coordination relationship between high-quality economic development and carbon emission performance in China: degree measurement, spatio-temporal evolution, and driving factors

Abstract:The association between high-quality economic development (HED) and carbon emission performance (CEP), remains vital in promoting sustainable development. We investigated the degree of coupling coordination between HED and CEP (DCCHC) in 173 prefecture-level cities throughout China from 2011 to 2019, looking at its spatiotemporal development and influential factors. Findings demonstrate that the DCCHC grew with time, predominantly characterized by seriously unbalanced and moderately unbalanced conditions. The DCCHC showed a strong positive spatial autocorrelation and a "high in the east, low in the west" distribution pattern. Additionally, the region's DCCHC followed a "U-shaped" trajectory in relation to economic development. The opening-up and digital economy promoted the region's DCCHC, whereas the energy consumption structure posed inhibitory effects. Conversely, the DCCHC of neighboring regions displayed an inverted "U-shaped" association with economic development. Technological innovation hindered neighboring regions' DCCHC, while environmental regulation contributed to the DCCHC of adjacent areas. Technological innovation, environmental regulation and digital economy emerged as the primary factors affecting the DCCHC in 2011, shifting by 2019 to digital economy, technological innovation, and economic development. The interaction between these factors exhibited two-factor enhancement, nonlinear enhancement, and single-factor nonlinear weakening. These findings not only aid in refining China's economic and environmental policies but also offer important lessons for other nations in shaping similar strategies.

Spatiotemporal heterogeneity and decoupling decomposition of industrial carbon emissions in the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration of China

Abstract:The objective of this study is to identify the spatiotemporal change law and the leading factors of industrial carbon emission decoupling. Based on the industrial carbon emission level of the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration (YRDUA) from 2006 to 2020, the spatiotemporal heterogeneity was explored with the help of the spatial Markov chain, the Tapio decoupling model was used to analyze its decoupling state from the industrial economy, and its driving factors were decomposed using the Kaya identity and logarithmic mean Divisia index (LMDI) model. The results show that (1) in 51.9% of the YRDUA's cities, the industrial carbon emission situation was stable, the emission reduction observation area (medium carbon) occupied a dominant position, and the emission reduction key area (relatively high carbon) gradually decreased. (2) Industrial carbon emissions had spatial overflow and path dependency characteristics, and the probability of carbon emission type transfer maintaining the original state reached 80.0%. From 2006 to 2011, the average probability of the downward migration of high-carbon cities was 5.0%. From 2011 to 2020, the average probability of the upward transfer of low-carbon cities was 9.4%. (3) The negative decoupling rate of carbon emissions in the YRDUA experienced a transition from 3.7% to 44.4% and then back to 7.4%, showing spatial imbalance. Unsatisfactory decoupling cities were concentrated along the Yangtze River and in coastal areas. (4) The promoting efficiency of energy intensity, carbon emission coefficient, and employment structure was gradually strengthened, and the carbon-increasing effect of labor input was gradually weakened. (5) The decoupling mode of heavy difficult cities is dominated by the three-factor balanced type, which is jointly affected by industrial production, labor input, and carbon emission coefficient. The findings in this study can provide inspiration for industrial carbon emission reduction in megalopolises.

Abstract:Green and low-carbon use of urban land (GLUUL) and high-quality economic development (HED) are two closely linked and mutually reinforcing systems, and their coordinated development is of great theoretical and practical significance to the realization of green and sustainable urban development. Based on theoretical analysis, this paper used data from 2005 to 2020 to measure GLUUL efficiency and HED level and their coupling coordination degree (CCD) successively of 282 cities in China, and then analyzed in-depth the main factors affecting CCD and its spatial–temporal heterogeneity using the GTWR model. This study found that (1) GLUUL efficiency and HED levels are increasing with different trends, and the development is unbalanced. High-value cities in the two systems show a staggered distribution pattern. (2) The CCD of the two was dominated by primary and intermediate coordination types, and the overall became increasingly coordinated, with the "intermediate coordination—advanced development" type having the highest representation. (3) There is a gradual convergence of CCD spatial differences, showing an overall spatial distribution pattern that is "high in the northwest and southeast, low in the central area". (4) The influence degree and direction of different factors on CCD are distinguishing. The positive impact of industrial structure upgrading (Isu) is obviously greater than other factors, which has the strongest effect on the industrial corridor along the Yangtze River and the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region. The findings can offer insightful recommendations for promoting sustainable development in China and similar developing countries and regions.

Abstract:The rapid and disorderly expansion of urban construction land has exacerbated the contradiction between land use and low-carbon development. In this paper, we use the spatial autocorrelation model and coupling model to analyze the spatial characteristics of the coupled coordination degree of land transfer and carbon emissions in 291 cities in China. The multi-scale geographically weighted regression (MGWR) model is used to explore the spatial heterogeneity of the influence of socioeconomic factors on their coupled coordination degree. The results show that: from 2005 to 2015, the scale of land transfer and carbon emissions has been increasing quantitatively and spatially showing a shift from the southeast coast to the central and western regions. In 2005, 2010, and 2015, the global Moran’s I of the coupled coordination degree are 0.3045, 0.3725, and 0.3388, respectively, indicating that the coupled coordination degree between land transfer and carbon emissions has a significant positive spatial autocorrelation. The MGWR model indicates that the influence of socioeconomic factors on the coupling coordination degree has significant spatial heterogeneity at different time nodes. In 2005 and 2015, the coefficients of the NGR on the coupling coordination of land transfer and carbon emissions have obvious stratification characteristics, with the coefficients decreasing from northeast to southwest. In 2010, the high coefficient (0.924∼0.989) of GPC is mainly distributed in the central region. The coefficient of the PD ranges from 0.464 to 0.918, but the difference of influence degree between the southeast coast and the northwest is obvious. This study may provide new clues for sustainable urban development and carbon reduction.

Abstract:The reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and sustainable development in low-carbon ways are of great significance to urban agglomerations. However, few studies are exploring the relationship between CO2 emis-sions and socioeconomic development at city levels from the perspective of clusters of regions. Based on the open data of inventory for anthropogenic CO2 emissions, nighttime light data, and population dataset as a proxy for the socioeconomic development levels of urban agglomerations, we used Mann-Kendall trend test, Tapio decoupling analysis, and spatial autocorrelation analysis to explore the spatiotemporal association of CO2 emissions and the impact of socioeconomic development on emissions in the nineteen urban agglomerations in China. Findings showed that the growth of CO2 emissions in China was primarily concentrated in urban ag-glomerations. The CO2 emissions in eastern coastal and northern urban agglomerations were much higher than those in other areas, while the emissions in western urban agglomerations were the lowest. The periodic char-acteristics of CO2 emissions were consistent with China's five-year development plan. Urban agglomerations in the early stage from 2000 to 2002 or with developed and stable industrial structures tended to achieve decou-pling. High-high (HH) clusters of socioeconomic development with CO2 emissions were mainly distributed in urban agglomerations of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region (BTH), the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), Yangtze River Delta (YRD), Huhhot-Baotou-Ordos-Yulin (HBOY), Shandong Peninsula (SP), and Central Shanxi (CS). Most of the clusters except those in HBOY shrunk from 2000 to 2010 and remained rela-tively stable from 2010 to 2019. These urban agglomerations should promote synergistic emission reduction. High-low (HL) clusters mostly appeared in central cities with a high socioeconomic level and surrounding cities with low CO2 emissions s, i.e., in urban agglomerations of Chengdu-Chongqing region (CC), the Beibu Gulf (BG), and Lanzhou-Xining (LX). These urban agglomerations with prominent polarization phenomena should adhere to regional overall coordination and thus minimize total regional costs of CO2 emission reduction. Spatial Differences and Influencing Factors of Carbon Emission Intensity in China's Urban Agglomerations toward the Carbon Neutrality Target

Abstract:It is of great scientific value to study the spatial differences and influencing factors of carbon emission intensity (CEI) in urban agglomerations (UAs), and it also has reference significance for China in formulating energy-saving and emission-reduction policies to achieve the target of carbon neutrality. Taking 165 prefecture-level cities in 19 UAs in China from 2007 to 2019 as the research object, this study investigated the spatial differences of CEI in UAs using exploratory spatial data analysis and explored the influencing factors of CEI via Geodetector. The results showed the following: (1) The CEI of the UAs showed a downward trend. (2) The CEI of the UAs has typical spatial agglomeration characteristics, where the North comprises mainly high-high and low-high types, whereas the South is primarily high-low and low-low types. (3) The influencing factors of CEI have undergone a transformation from industrial structure to population urbanization.

Spatiotemporal association of carbon dioxide emissions in China's urban agglomerations

Abstract:The reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and sustainable development in low-carbon ways are of great significance to urban agglomerations. However, few studies are exploring the relationship between CO2 emissions and socioeconomic development at city levels from the perspective of clusters of regions. Based on the open data of inventory for anthropogenic CO2 emissions, nighttime light data, and population dataset as a proxy for the socioeconomic development levels of urban agglomerations, we used Mann-Kendall trend test, Tapio decoupling analysis, and spatial autocorrelation analysis to explore the spatiotemporal association of CO2 emissions and the impact of socioeconomic development on emissions in the nineteen urban agglomerations in China. Findings showed that the growth of CO2 emissions in China was primarily concentrated in urban agglomerations. The CO2 emissions in eastern coastal and northern urban agglomerations were much higher than those in other areas, while the emissions in western urban agglomerations were the lowest. The periodic characteristics of CO2 emissions were consistent with China's five-year development plan. Urban agglomerations in the early stage from 2000 to 2002 or with developed and stable industrial structures tended to achieve decoupling. High-high (HH) clusters of socioeconomic development with CO2 emissions were mainly distributed in urban agglomerations of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region (BTH), the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), Yangtze River Delta (YRD), Huhhot-Baotou-Ordos-Yulin (HBOY), Shandong Peninsula (SP), and Central Shanxi (CS). Most of the clusters except those in HBOY shrunk from 2000 to 2010 and remained relatively stable from 2010 to 2019. These urban agglomerations should promote synergistic emission reduction. High-low (HL) clusters mostly appeared in central cities with a high socioeconomic level and surrounding cities with low CO2 emissions s, i.e., in urban agglomerations of Chengdu-Chongqing region (CC), the Beibu Gulf (BG), and Lanzhou-Xining (LX). These urban agglomerations with prominent polarization phenomena should adhere to regional overall coordination and thus minimize total regional costs of CO2 emission reduction. The results could provide references for the synergistic reduction of CO2 emissions and the coordinated development in urban agglomerations.

Abstract:The coordination of urbanization with the ecological environment has become a significant sustainable urban development problem given the current acceleration in China's urbanization. The existing research lacks in-depth discussion on the coordination relationship between urbanization and energy eco-environment from the perspective of urban agglomeration. This paper takes the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration as its research area. The combination of CRITIC and entropy weight methods is used to measure the comprehensive urbanization level (CUL) from the four dimensions of population, economy, land, and society, and the SBM-Undesirable model is used to measure the energy eco-efficiency (EE). The spatiotemporal pattern and dynamic evolution law of the coupling coordination degree (CCD) between CUL and EE are analyzed using the coupling coordination model and the spatial Markov chain. The research results reveal that (1) from the comprehensive development level standpoint, both CUL and EE are on the rise from 2010 to 2021; however, a problem of unbalanced development is observed. (2) The overall CCD displays an upward trend and evinces significant spatial differentiation characteristics from the coordinated development level viewpoint. (3) The CCD transition state is not isolated to certain geographic spaces: adjacent cities will impact changes in the coupling coordination types of an urban center. Therefore, we propose strategies to improve the CCD between CUL and EE to offer theoretical and policy inferences for the formulation of sustainable urban development strategies.

Abstract:Anthropogenic activities exhibit intricate and significant relationships with atmospheric CO 2 concentration. Dissecting the spatiotemporal patterns and potential drivers of their coupling coordination relationships from geospatial and temporal perspectives contributes to the benign coordinating development between the two. The coupling coordination degree ( D ) and types, and their potential influencing factors in China were explored using a coupling coordination model, emerging hotspot analysis, and Multiscale Geographically Weighted Regression model. Results revealed D was dominated by basic coordination in China with notable spatial disparities. Generally, D exhibited higher values in the eastern regions and lower values in the western regions divided by the Hu Line. Furthermore, Central and East China exhibited lower coordination degrees compared to other eastern regions. A total of 15 spatiotemporal dynamic patterns were identified across China. Hot spot patterns were concentrated in the eastern regions of the Hu Line, while cold spots were mainly observed in the western regions. The coupling coordination types exhibited a distinct pattern of "coordination in the east and incoherence in the west, divided by the Hu Line". Over time, there was a shift from lower-level to more benign coordinated types. Additionally, the D and coupling coordination types demonstrated significant spatial agglomeration characteristics, and intercity alliances and enhanced collaborations are essential for sustaining low-carbon improvements. The mechanisms and intensities of various factors on D exhibited spatiotemporal differences. The key drivers influencing coupling coordination types varied depending on the specific type. Additionally, the scales of these drivers affecting D changed over time. It is essential to consider natural and meteorological factors and their scaling effects when developing policies to enhance coupling coordination level. These results have significant implications for assessing the relationship between atmospheric CO 2 and human activities and provide guidance for implementing effective low-carbon development policies.
