Abstract:In this paper, different dielectric barrier discharge powers and the effects of various external factors on the degradation of thiamethoxam were investigated. TiO2 catalyst was added to improve the degradation efficiency, and the effects of different forms of catalysts (powdered TiO2 and TiO2 loaded on ceramic) were compared. The results showed that the removal rate of thiamethoxam could reach 85.9% after 160-min degradation with a discharge power of 150 W. The degradation process was inhibited with the increase of initial electrical conductivity and initial pH, or the addition of n-butyl alcohol, whereas Fe2+ and Cu2+ could promote the degradation. The catalytic efficiency of TiO2 loaded on ceramic was slightly higher than that of powdered TiO2. According to the analysis results of the degradation products by high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry low temperature dielectric barrier discharge plasma could effectively degrade the thiamethoxam in water. In conclusion, the dielectric barrier discharge plasma can facilitate the degradation of thiamethoxam in water, which lays a solid foundation for wastewater treatment in the field of pesticide.

Abstract:In order to study the new technique of plasma wastewater treatment, the degradation behaviour ofnitenpyram (NTP) pesticide was investigated in a low-temperature plasma formed during a dielectric barrier discharge process. The reactor was a radial flow sedimentation tank centred around the water inlet. We studied the effect of pesticide concentration and input power of the dielectric barrier discharge, together with the effect of external factors on the degradation of nitenpyram pesticide wastewater such as conductivity and the use of various of catalysts, and the reaction products were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS). The results showed that NTP could be effectively removed from aqueous solution by low-temperature plasma. Increasing the input power could improve the efficiency of degradation, conforming to a first-order kinetic model. Use of a suitable catalyst clearly improved the degradation process, as also did low conductivity. The pH of NTP was reduced with discharge time.

Abstract:Tetracycline is one of the widely used antibiotic drugs, but it also causes severe water pollution. This research applied a pulsed dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma reactor of coaxial configuration with a screw-type high-voltage electrode to treat tetracycline in an aqueous solution, which was recycled to flow over the surface of the inner electrode. The effects of discharge voltage, initial concentration, and pH value of tetracycline on the degradation efficiency, total organic carbon (TOC) removal rate, kinetic rate constant ( ${k}$ ), and energy efficiency were investigated. The results show that 92.3% degradation efficiency and 65.01% TOC removal rate of tetracycline were achieved at the initial concentration of 50 mg/L, corresponding to the energy efficiency of 20.24 g/(kW $\cdot \text{h}$ ). The tetracycline degradation efficiencies were dependent on the initial concentration from 5 to 75 mg/L, which led to the decrease of the degradation kinetic rate constant from 0.518 to 0.077 min $^{-1}$ . The TOC removal rate of tetracycline was strongly enhanced at higher pH values from 1.5 to 10.5, with the optimum value at 7.5. The intermediate products of tetracycline produced by the plasma treatment were analyzed by liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS), which show that the aromatic ring, amino group, and the double bonds were mainly attacked by the hydroxyl radical and other reactive oxygen species. A possible degradation pathway has also been proposed.

Abstract:Degradation of oxytetracycline (OTC), a primary member of antibiotics in water, was performed by a gas phase dielectric barrier discharge (GPDBD) plasma reactor. The influences of operation conditions including applied voltages, air bubbling rates, initial OTC concentrations and initial pH values on OTC abatement were investigated respectively. The results showed that the decontamination process can be fitted by first order kinetics, and the removal ratio and rate were affected obviously by those parameters. After 20 min of discharge treatment, approximately 93.4% of OTC was removed under the experimental conditions: applied voltage of 7.5 kV, air flow rate of 1.0 L/min, initial OTC concentration of 100 mg/L, and initial pH of 5.0. In addition, TOC and COD removal efficiency reached 43.0% and 73.7% at the original pH 9.3, respectively. Furthermore, the amounts of hydrogen peroxide and ozone in aqueous were quantitatively measured to evaluate their roles during antibiotic removal, and the main function of hydroxyl radicals was demonstrated by the radicals scavenger test. At last, the analyses of UV-Vis spectra and HPLC-MS were employed to study the OTC elimination mechanism, and the possible decomposition pathway was proposed based on the speculated intermediates.

Abstract:Microbial degradation is an important option for combating antibiotic pollution. Arthrobacter nicotianae OTC-16 was isolated as a novel tetracycline-degrading bacterium, which could degrade oxytetracycline/tetracycline (OTC/TET). Toxicity assessment indicated that this bacterium effectively converted OTC into byproducts with less toxicity to bacterial and algal indicators. Six degradation products of OTC were tentatively identified, and a potential biotransformation pathway was proposed that includes decarbonylation, reduction, and dehydration. Bioaugmentation of TC removal with this bacterium was further studied in various matrices. In aqueous media, strain OTC-16 accelerated OTC removal over a temperature range of 20-35 degrees C, pH range of 6.0-9.0, and OTC concentration range of 25-150 mg L-1. The strain also facilitated the decrease of OTC and TET concentrations in both swine and chicken manures, with a maximum decrease of 91.54%, and increased the degradation of OTC in soils by 8.22-45.45%. A unique advantage of this bacterium in promoting OTC degradation in alkaline environments was demonstrated, where it successfully competed with the indigenous microbiota and largely decreased the relative abundances of the studied tetracycline resistance genes (tetB and tetW) in soil. This work offers a better understanding of the antibiotic bioaugmentation and new microbial sources.

Abstract:Water pollution driven by the increasing antibiotic abuse leads to serious ecological impacts and risks to human health. Non-thermal plasma, a sustainable advanced oxidation process, is considered as a promising approach for antibiotic degradation. In this study, a transient spark gas–liquid discharge was developed for the degradation of tetracycline in water and coupled with a photocatalyst (TiO2) to further improve the degradation efficiency. Results show that the discharge was accompanied by intense UV light of up to 28 μW/cm2. The tetracycline degradation performance was strongly dependent on the pulse voltage, working gas, initial concentrations of tetracycline and the catalyst addition. The best degradation performance was achieved in the plasma-TiO2 system with a degradation rate of 90.2% after 10 min treatment. The catalyst exhibits a high efficiency at lower pulse voltages, with the synergetic intensity of plasma and TiO2 showing a decreasing trend with increasing pulse voltage. Radical quenching experiments suggest that hydroxyl radical (∙OH) plays a key role in the tetracycline degradation process. A pathway for tetracycline degradation by the plasma-TiO2 process is deduced according to the analysis of the degradation intermediates. Further, seed germination and plant growth tests for the treated water demonstrated the feasibility of discharging the treated water to irrigate agricultural crops.

Abstract:BACKGROUNDA new method of tetracycline (TC) degradation by corona discharge plasma with a suspended Bi2MoO6 catalyst was investigated. The flake-like structure particles were successfully synthesized by a solvent-thermal method and analyzed by XRD, SEM, TEM, BET and XRF. The catalytic activity, the reaction mechanisms, the intermediates of TC degradation and the proposed pathway were also evaluated for the reaction process. RESULTThe removal rate of 250 mL TC with 50 mg L-1 was enhanced from 62% to 96% in 24 min with the addition of Bi2MoO6 in the range 0-1.5 g L-1, under a discharge input power of 36.0 W. The corresponding removal rate of TOC increased from 25% to 61%, and 95% of the catalyst (1.0 g L-1) was settled in 60 min. CONCLUTIONSIt was shown that a synergistic effect existed between corona discharge plasma and Bi2MoO6 in the process of TC degradation. The intermediates and a possible degradation pathway of TC were determined based on LC-MS analysis. The study proposes an efficient technology and degradation mechanism for TC wastewater treatment. Abstract:Chlortetracycline (CTC), a toxic and harmful tetracycline antibiotic, tends to accumulate significantly in treated sludge from sewage treatment plants, yet efficient degradation methods of CTC in sludge remain undeveloped. This study examined the impact of coupling dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) on CTC degradation. When PMS was combined with DBD, the CTC degradation rate increased by 23.2 %, while the energy yield improved by 13.1%. Furthermore, CTC degradation enhancement was influenced by the applied voltage, PMS dosage, initial pH, and initial CTC concentration. The activation of PMS enriched the DBD plasma system with reactive species and increased the oxidation potential, thereby enhancing CTC degradation efficiency. Besides, radical scavenging experiments indicated that hydroxyl radical was the dominant contributor to CTC removal in sludge. The degradation behaviors of CTC indicated that the DBD/PMS system facilitated CTC degradation not only on the surface of the sludge but also in the supernatant. Additionally, the breakdown process of the sludge could enhance the degradation of CTC. In the DBD/PMS composite system, the concentration of CTC in the sludge solid phase was 16.5 mg kg −1 , while in the liquid phase, it was 0.044 mg/L. These concentrations decreased by 32.7 % and 44.3 %, respectively, compared to those observed with DBD plasma alone. Density-functional theory revealed three distinct degradation pathways. Further toxicity evaluation implied that the DBD/PMS system helped alleviate the toxicity of CTC. In summary, DBD combined with PMS may be an efficient and environmentally friendly approach for removing CTC from sludge.

Abstract:The abuse of tetracycline antibiotics (TCs) has caused serious environmental pollution and risks to public health. Degradation of TCs by cold atmospheric plasmas (CAPs) is a high efficiency, low energy consumption and environmentally friendly method. In this study, a reactive molecular dynamics (MD) simulation is applied to study the interactions of reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced in CAPs and TCs (including tetracycline (TC), oxytetracycline (OTC), chlortetracycline (CTC) and demeclocycline (DMC)). As revealed by the simulation data at the atomic level, the main reaction sites on TCs are the C2 acylamino, the C4 dimethylamine, the C6 methyl group, the C8 site on the benzene ring and the C12a tertiary alcohol. The interaction between ROS and TCs is usually initiated by H-abstraction, followed by the breaking and formation of the crucial chemical bonds, such as the breaking of C-C bonds, C-N bonds and C-O bonds and the formation of C=C bonds and C=O bonds. Due to the different structures of TCs, when the ROS impact OTC, CTC and DMC, some specific reactions are observed, including carbonylation at the C5 site, dechlorination at the C7 site and carbonylation at the C6 site, respectively. Some degradation products obtained from the simulation data have been observed in the experimental measurements. In addition, the dose effects of CAP on TCs by adjusting the number of ROS in the simulation box are also investigated and are consistent with experimental observation. This study explains in detail the interaction mechanisms of degradation of TCs treated by CAPs with the final products after degradation, provides theoretical support for the experimental observation, then suggests optimization to further improve the efficiency of degradation of TCs by CAPs in applications.

Abstract:Pollution of antibiotics in water has aroused global concerns. In this study, non-thermal discharge plasma oxidation was applied to eliminate three antibiotics with different substituent groups and chemical properties, tetracycline (TC), sulfadiazine (SD), and ciprofloxacin (CIP). All the three antibiotics could be effectively degraded but with different reaction kinetics, and the reaction rate of TC was always the highest, followed by SD and CIP. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) including O2−, 1O2, and OH all contributed to the removal of the three antibiotics. The theoretically calculation using Gaussian with DFT indicated that the ionization potential (IP) of the three antibiotics was in the order of TC < SD < CIP. Since the compounds with lower IP values were more vulnerable to ROS attack, the lowest IP of TC suggested that it was the easiest to be degraded among the three target compounds. In addition, the Gaussian calculations predicted that the chemical bonds with low energies were susceptible for oxidation. Integrating the results of theoretical calculation and those of UV–vis spectra, three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and ion chromatography, the degradation pathways of the three antibiotics were figured out, mainly including hydroxylation, decarboxylation, dealkylation, and ring-opening reactions. The results provide clues to predict the potentials and pathways of oxidative degradation of antibiotics in water.

Abstract:A systematic investigation of coupling dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma and different ultraviolet bands (UVA, UVB, UVC, and VUV) was constructed for antibiotic-contaminant wastewater treatment. Compared with DBD, UV, or other combined DBD/UV systems, the DBD/VUV/UVC system exhibited excellent degradation and mineralization efficiencies for oxytetracycline (OTC), achieving 93.2% removal rate (reaction rate constant 1.05 min −1 ) and higher decarbonization efficiency (mineralization rate 0.47 mg C min −1 ) within 2.5 min treatment. The radical quenching tests revealed that HO⋅, O2∙− , and 1 O 2 were all involved in the decomposition of OTC in the DBD/VUV/UVC system, among which O2∙− played a dominant role. Possible degradation pathways of OTC in the DBD/VUV/UVC process were proposed using density functional theory and detected intermediates. Four indexes were used to assess the toxicity of OTC and its degraded intermediates. The inorganic anions and HA slightly reduced the degradation efficiency of the DBD/VUV/UVC system. This research provides new ideas to broaden the application of plasma and alleviate the water environment crisis.

Evaluating Tetracycline Degradation Pathway and Intermediate Toxicity During the Electrochemical Oxidation over a Ti/Ti4O7 Anode

Abstract:Tetracycline (TC) is one of the most widely used antibiotics with significant impacts on human health and thus it needs appropriate approaches for its removal. In the present study, we evaluated the performance and complete pathway of the TC electrochemical oxidation on a Ti/Ti4O7 anode prepared by plasma spraying. Morphological data and composition analysis indicated a compact coating layer on the anode, which had the characteristic peaks of Ti4O7 as active constituent. The TC electrochemical oxidation on the Ti/Ti4O7 anode followed a pseudo-first-order kinetics, and the TC removal efficiency reached 95.8% in 40 min. The influential factors on TC decay kinetics included current density, anode-cathode distance and initial TC concentration. This anode also had high durability and the TC removal efficiency was maintained over 95% after five times reuse. For the first time, we unraveled the complete pathway of the TC electrochemical oxidation using high-performance liquid chromatograph (HPLC) and gas chromatograph (GC) coupled with mass spectrometer (MS). ·OH radicals produced from electrochemical oxidation attack the double bond, phenolic group and amine group of TC, forming a primary intermediate (m/z = 461), secondary intermediates (m/z = 432, 477 and 509) and tertiary intermediates (m/z = 480, 448 and 525). The latter were further oxidized to the key downstream intermediate (m/z = 496), followed by further downstream intermediates (m/z = 451, 412, 396, 367, 351, 298 and 253) and eventually short-chain carboxylic acids. We also evaluated the toxicity change during the electrochemical oxidation process with bioluminescent bacteria. The bioluminescence inhibition ratio peaked at 10 min (55.41%), likely owing to the high toxicity of intermediates with m/z = 461, 432 and 477 as obtained from quantitative structure activity relationship (QSAR) analysis. The bioluminescence inhibition ratio eventually decreased to 16.78% in 40 min due to further transformation of TC and intermediates. By comprehensively analyzing the influential factors and complete degradation pathway of TC electrochemical oxidation on the Ti/Ti4O7 anode, our research provides deeper insights into the risk assessment of intermediates and their toxicity, assigning new perspectives for practical electrochemical oxidation to effectively eliminate the amount and toxicity of TC and other antibiotics in wastewater.

Abstract:Cold atmospheric plasma discharges in air above air–water surface interface and discharges inside water with injection of air bubbles, show interesting properties for water purification. Water parameters during plasma treatment get different values depending on discharge schemes. Detailed measurements of water parameters during plasma applications as pH, oxidation–reduction potential, total dissolved solids and conductivity are essential in understanding micropollutants degradation mechanisms in water. E. coli bacteria in water have been eliminated faster by plasma discharges produced in water than in air above it. Degradations of two antibiotics oxytetracycline hydrochloride (OTC) and doxycycline hyclate (DXC) in water solution are faster for plasma generated below solution surface than above it with appearance of one degradation product for OTC and two for DXC along plasma treatment time. Degradations are enhanced in the solution after 200 h following plasma treatment for the two antibiotics. H2O2 concentration can give a good indication of plasma effectiveness on different pollutants as it is a relatively stable compound. For water purification, contributions of two factors have to be identified namely water acidity with certain pH value and concentrations of reactive species generated in water. For plasma discharges inside water with air bubbles the most pronounced effect is the increasing value of H2O2 generated in water, while for plasma discharges above water the effect of water acidity induced by low pH is more dominant regarding pollutants degradations.

Abstract:Excessive use and indiscriminate discharge of antibiotics inevitably lead to their accumulation in the environment, posing significant ecological and physiological risks. Non-thermal plasma (NTP) is receiving increasing attention as a sustainable technology for the efficient breakdown of these antibiotics as well as other contaminants. However, implementation of NTP technology still faces several hurdles, particularly the maximization of the reactive plasma effects and the practical scaling approaches. In this study, we generated NTP inside forming bubbles with enlarged gas-liquid interfacial areas for efficient delivery of reactive plasma species to target cefixime antibiotic molecules in aqueous solution. The degradation of cefixime was largely dependent on the different number of microholes, air flow rate, discharge power, plasma exposure time and solution properties. Results show that a high-performance degradation was achieved in the 10-microhole reactor with an energy yield of 1.5 g/kWh, after 30 min of plasma treatment. Based on LC-MS analysis, an NTP-initiated cefixime degradation pathway was proposed. Cytotoxicity studies demonstrated that the antibiotic activity of cefixime was effectively and wholly deactivated by the plasma process, and that no toxic effects of the 30 min-treated water were observed toward human cell lines. Furthermore, considering that air was employed as the inducer gas, which results in the formation of reactive nitrogen species in the water, the treated water was able to enhance seedling growth, further contributing to the societal and economic benefits of this plasma-based antibiotic degradation strategy.

Abstract:During the ozonation of tetracycline (TC) in aqueous media at pHs 2.2 and 7.0, the effects of pH variations, protonation and dissociation of functional groups and variation in free radical exposure were investigated to elucidate the transformation pathway. Liquid chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry detected around 15 ozonation products, and uncovered their production and subsequent degradation patterns. During ozonation at pH 2.2, the TC degradation pathway was proposed on the basis of the structure, ozonation chemistry and mass spectrometry data of TC. Ozonation of TC at the C11a-C12 and C2-C3 double bonds, aromatic ring and amino group generated products of m/z 461, 477, 509 and 416, respectively. Further ozonation at the above mentioned sites gave products of m/z 432, 480, 448, 525 and 496. The removal of TOC reached a maximum of approximately 40% after 2 h of ozonation, while TC was completely removed within 4-6 min at both pHs. The low TOC removal efficiency might be due to the generation of recalcitrant products and the low ozone supply for high TC concentration. Ozonation decreased the acute toxicity of TC faster at pH 7.0 than pH 2.2, but the maximum decrease was only about 40% at both pHs after 2 h of ozonation. In this study, attempts were made to understand the correlation between the transformation products, pathway, acute toxicity and quantity of residual organics in solution. Overall, ozonation was found to be a promising process for removing TC and the products initially generated.

Abstract:Tetracyclines (TC) frequently detected in the aqueous environment pose threats to humans and ecosystems. The synergistic technology coupling ultrasound (US) and calcium peroxide (CaO2) has a great potential to abate TC in wastewater. However, the degradation efficiency and detailed mechanism of TC removal in the US/CaO2 system is unclear. This work was carried out to assess the performance and mechanism of TC removal in the US/CaO2 system. The results demonstrated that 99.2% of TC was degraded by the combination of 15 mM CaO2 with ultrasonic power of 400 W (20 kHz), but only about 30% and 4.5% of TC was removed by CaO2 (15 mM) or US (400 W) alone process, respectively. Experiments using specific quenchers and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis indicated that the generation of hydroxyl radicals (•OH), superoxide radicals (O2-•), and single oxygen (1O2) in the process, whereas •OH and 1O2 were mainly responsible for the degradation of TC. The removal of TC in the US/CaO2 system has a close relationship with the ultrasonic power, the dosage of CaO2 and TC, and the initial pH. The degradation pathway of TC in the US/CaO2 process was proposed based on the detected oxidation products, and it mainly included N,N-dedimethylation, hydroxylation, and ring-opening reactions. The presence of 10 mM common inorganic anions including chloridion (Cl-), nitrate ion (NO3-), sulfate ion (SO42-), and bicarbonate ion (HCO3-) showed negligible influences on the removal of TC in the US/CaO2 system. The US/CaO2 process could efficiently remove TC in real wastewater. Overall, this work firstly demonstrated that •OH and 1O2 mainly contributed to the removal of pollutants in the US/CaO2 system, which was remarkable for understanding the mechanisms of CaO2-based oxidation process and its future application.

Abstract:The objective of this study was to investigate the degradation removal and pathway of tetracycline (TC) antibiotic from aqueous solution using H2O2 alone. Meanwhile, the effects of some operational parameters including initial concentration of H2O2 (29–580mM), pH (3.3–10), and contact time (10–180min) on the removal efficiency of TC were measured. The results showed that the removal of TC increased with increasing initial H2O2 dosage, pH and treatment time, and about 97% of TC was removed by H2O2 with the concentration of 174mM in alkaline aqueous solution. Experiments with different scavengers indicated that TC degradation occurred via a direct molecular reaction instead of active radicals. Nine transformation products were identified, but only three ones were the final products. These products resulted from hydroxylation, loss of some functional groups and cleavage of benzene rings of TC. These results demonstrated a new oxidative transformation pathway of TC induced by H2O2 without combination, further supporting the important role of oxidant species in the environmental fate of TCs.

Abstract:The removal of triclocarban (TCC) in aqueous solution by dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma combined with TiO2 coated activated carbon fibers (TiO2/ACFs) catalysts was investigated at atmospheric pressure and room temperature. The effects of output power, initial concentration, radius of TiO2/ACFs catalysts and recyclability of catalysts on the removal rate of triclocarban were explored. The results showed that the addition of TiO2/ACFs catalysts with radius of 3cm into DBD plasma reactor could improve mineralization efficiency of TCC by 12% as compared with sole DBD system and the acute toxicity of TCC solution decreased from 64% to 32% after 30min degradation in DBD/TiO2/ACFs system. The mechanism experiments indicated that oxygen and OH radical played an important role during the degradation process. Moreover, a possible reaction pathway was proposed based on stable products identified by gas chromatography–mass spectrometer. The results confirmed that DBD/TiO2/ACFs might be a promising method for effectively removing TCC from water.

Abstract:To develop a more green and effective method for tetracycline (TC) removal, a hybrid material (conversion phosphors-TiO2, UCPs-TiO2) was coupled with a biofilm to achieve enhanced removal of TC. The removal of TC by biofilm coupled with UCPs-TiO2 under visible light reached 82%, which was 35% higher than that in treatment using only the biofilm. Extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) promoted the production of hydroxyl radicals by UCPs-TiO2, as the EPS acted as an electron transfer medium and accelerated the TC mineralization. Biofilm in the coupled system tolerated TC stress by regulating its antibiotic resistance genes (ARG) and superoxide dismutase (SOD), and allowed it to maintain stable and efficient removal of TC. This study documents a method to couple a hybrid material with microbial aggregates, creating a promising system for removing refractory organics, such as TC, from water. The study also offers insight into the mechanisms underlying TC removal by microbial aggregates combined with new functional materials.
