Abstract:Background: Patients with postacute anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate (anti-NMDA) receptor encephalitis are often left with permanent memory impairments. Given that NMDA receptors are essential to memory encoding, and encoding processes have been suggested to contribute to the success of memory retrieval, we investigate whether postacute anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis leads to abnormal brain activation during verbal memory encoding and its potential effects on subsequent memory retrieval performance.Methods: To address this issue, this study recruited 21 adult patients with anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis past the acute stage and 22 healthy controls (HCs). Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data were collected when they completed an episodic memory task.Results: At the neural level, the patients showed higher brain activation than the HCs in the bilateral hippocampus/parahippocampus (HG/PHG), right superior temporal gyrus (STG), and right thalamus during memory encoding. At the behavioral level, the patients showed worse memory retrieval performance than the HCs. Importantly, greater brain activation in the left HG/PHG during memory encoding was significantly associated with worse memory retrieval performance among the patients.Conclusion: Our findings indicate that postacute anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis is likely related to altered brain activation during memory encoding. Particularly, less memory retrieval performance often observed in patients with postacute anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis may result from abnormal activation in HG during encoding. These observations may enhance our understanding of NMDA receptor dysfunction in the human brain. Impact statementPatients with anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate (anti-NMDA) receptor encephalitis are often left with permanent memory impairments. In this study, brain activation during verbal memory encoding and its potential effects on subsequent memory retrieval performance are addressed using 21 adult patients with postacute anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis and 22 healthy controls. Greater brain activation in the left hippocampus/parahippocampus during memory encoding was significantly associated with worse memory retrieval performance among the patients. These observations enhance our understanding of NMDA receptor dysfunction in the human brain.
Differential Neural Correlates Underlie Judgment of Learning and Subsequent Memory Performance

Abstract:Judgment of learning (JOL) plays a pivotal role in self-regulated learning. Although the JOLs are in general accurate, important deviations from memory performance are often reported, especially when the JOLs are made immediately after learning. Nevertheless, existing studies have not clearly dissociated the neural processes underlying subjective JOL and objective memory. In the present study, participants were asked to study a list of words that would be tested 1 day later. Immediately after learning an item, participants predicted how likely they would remember that item. Critically, the JOL was performed on only half of the studied items to avoid its contamination on subsequent memory. We found that during encoding, compared to items later judged as "will be forgotten," those judged as "will be remembered" showed stronger activities in the default-mode network, including the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (PFC) and posterior cingulate cortex, as well as weaker functional connectivity between the left dorsolateral PFC and the visual cortex. The exact opposite pattern was found when comparing items that were actually remembered with those that were later forgotten. These important neural dissociations between JOL and memory performance shed light on the neural mechanisms of human metamemory bias.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss unique light localizations in photonic crystal line defect waveguides based on two different concepts. The first concept is an additional defect doping that breaks the symmetry of the line defect. Even though such a defect is open to the line defect, the optical field is well confined around the defect at cutoff frequencies of the line defect. This expands the design flexibility of microcavities and allows effective mode controls such as the single-mode operation. The lasing action of such cavities in a GaInAsP photonic crystal slab was experimentally observed by photopumping at room temperature. The second concept is a chirping of the waveguide structure. The photonic band of a waveguide mode has a band edge, at which the group velocity becomes zero. The band-edge condition shifts in a chirped line defect waveguide, so guided light reaches a zero group velocity point and is localized. A macroscopic behavior of this phenomenon was experimentally observed in a waveguide fabricated into a silicon-on-insulator substrate. In addition, a microscopic behavior was theoretically investigated, which suggested its applicability to a group delay device.
Material-common and material-specific neural activity during encoding of words and scenes: A neuroimaging meta -analysis

Abstract:This study examined the extent to which neural activity during memory encoding demonstrates material-commonness or material-specificity. A meta -analysis of functional magnetic resonance imaging studies was conducted to compare the brain regions associated with subsequent memory effects for word and scene stimuli. The main results were as follows. First, significant subsequent memory effects for both words and scenes were primarily observed within the dorsal attention network. This finding aligns with the perspective that temporal fluctuations in attention modulate the intensity of encoding activity, influencing the success or failure of encoding. Second, multiple prefrontal cortex regions, particularly the left inferior frontal cortex, exhibited stronger subsequent memory effects for words compared to scenes. Conversely, multiple visual processing regions revealed an opposite pattern, with heightened subsequent memory effects for scenes relative to words. These findings suggest that words are more strongly encoded through semantic processing, whereas scenes are primarily encoded through visuo-perceptual processing. In conclusion, these results clarify the material specificity and commonness of encoding-related neural activity, emphasizing the significant role of attention and the distinctions between verbal and pictorial information.

Neural activity during working memory encoding, maintenance, and retrieval: A network‐based model and meta‐analysis

Abstract:It remains unclear whether and to what extent working memory (WM) temporal subprocesses (i.e., encoding, maintenance, and retrieval) involve shared or distinct intrinsic networks. To address this issue, I constructed a model of intrinsic network contributions to different WM phases and then evaluated the validity of the model by performing a quantitative meta‐analysis of relevant functional neuroimaging data. The model suggests that the transition from the encoding to maintenance and to retrieval stages involves progressively decreasing involvement of the dorsal attention network (DAN), but progressively increasing involvement of the frontoparietal control network (FPCN). Separate meta‐analysis of each phase effect and direct comparisons between them yielded results that were largely consistent with the model. This evidence included between‐phase double dissociations that were consistent with the model, such as encoding > maintenance contrast showing some DAN, but no FPCN, regions, and maintenance > encoding contrast showing the reverse, that is, some FPCN, but no DAN, regions. Two closely juxtaposed regions that are members of the DAN and FPCN, such as inferior frontal junction versus caudal prefrontal cortex and superior versus inferior intraparietal sulcus, showed a high degree of functional differentiation. Although all regions identified in the present study were already identified in previous WM studies, this study uniquely enhances our understating of their roles by clarifying their network membership and specific associations with different WM phases.

Abstract:Coherent fluctuations of spontaneous brain activity are present in distinct functional-anatomic brain systems during undirected wakefulness. However, the behavioral significance of this spontaneous activity has only begun to be investigated. Our previous studies have demonstrated that successful memory formation requires coordinated neural activity in a distributed memory network including the hippocampus and posteromedial cortices, specifically the precuneus and posterior cingulate (PPC), thought to be integral nodes of the default network. In this study, we examined whether intrinsic connectivity during the resting state between the hippocampus and PPC can predict individual differences in the performance of an associative memory task among cognitively intact older individuals. The intrinsic connectivity, between regions within the hippocampus and PPC that were maximally engaged during a subsequent memory fMRI task, was measured during a period of rest prior to the performance of the memory paradigm. Stronger connectivity between the hippocampal and posteromedial regions during rest predicted better performance on the memory task. Furthermore, hippocampal-PPC intrinsic connectivity was also significantly correlated with episodic memory measures on neuropsychological tests, but not with performance in non-memory domains. Whole-brain exploratory analyses further confirmed the spatial specificity of the relationship between hippocampal-default network posteromedial cortical connectivity and memory performance in older subjects. Our findings provide support for the hypothesis that one of the functions of this large-scale brain network is to subserve episodic memory processes. Research is ongoing to determine if impaired connectivity between these regions may serve as a predictor of memory decline related to early Alzheimer's disease.

Abstract:Prior work has shown Americans have higher levels of memory specificity than East Asians. Neuroimaging studies have not investigated mechanisms that account for cultural differences at retrieval. In this study, we use fMRI to assess whether mnemonic discrimination, distinguishing novel from previously encountered stimuli, accounts for cultural differences in memory. Fifty-five American and 55 Taiwanese young adults completed an object recognition paradigm testing discrimination of old targets, similar lures and novel foils. Mnemonic discrimination was tested by comparing discrimination of similar lures from studied targets, and results showed the relationship between activity in left fusiform gyrus and behavioural discrimination between target and lure objects differed across cultural groups. Parametric modulation analyses of activity during lure correct rejections also indicated that groups differed in left superior parietal cortex response to variations in lure similarity. Additional analyses of old vs. new activity indicated that Americans and Taiwanese differ in the neural activity supporting general object recognition in the hippocampus, left inferior frontal gyrus and middle frontal gyrus. Results are juxtaposed against comparisons of the regions activated in common across the two cultures. Overall, Americans and Taiwanese differ in the extent to which they recruit visual processing and attention modulating brain regions.

Abstract:The ability to accurately assess one's own memory performance during learning is essential for adaptive behavior, but the brain mechanisms underlying this metamemory function are not well understood. We investigated the neural correlates of memory accuracy and retrospective memory confidence in a face–name associative learning task using magnetoencephalography in healthy young adults (n = 32). We found that high retrospective confidence was associated with stronger occipital event-related fields during encoding and widespread event-related fields during retrieval compared to low confidence. On the other hand, memory accuracy was linked to medial temporal activities during both encoding and retrieval, but only in low-confidence trials. A decrease in oscillatory power at alpha/beta bands in the parietal regions during retrieval was associated with higher memory confidence. In addition, representational similarity analysis at the single-trial level revealed distributed but differentiable neural activities associated with memory accuracy and confidence during both encoding and retrieval. In summary, our study unveiled distinct neural activity patterns related to memory confidence and accuracy during associative learning and underscored the crucial role of parietal regions in metamemory.

Retrieval Success is Accompanied by Enhanced Activation in Anterior Prefrontal Cortex During Recognition Memory: An Event-Related fMRI Study

Abstract:Abstract Neural regions associated with retrieval success were identified using event-related fMRI procedures and randomly ordered trials on a recognition memory test. Differences between hits and correct rejections (CRs) occurred in multiple regions, including bilateral anterior and right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, bilateral inferior parietal cortex, and right superior parietal cortex (all hits > CRs), and right occipital cortex (CRs > hits). The hit > CR pattern is not compromised by time-on-task explanations because response latencies for correctly rejected words exceeded those for hits. Converging evidence for the claim that the hit > CR pattern identified neural correlates of retrieval success was obtained by unconfounding item history and retrieval success. That is, we implemented a third condition in which nonstudied words were presented, yet retrieval success was hypothesized to facilitate CRs of these lures. Specifically, when confronted with a familiar, yet nonstudied word, (e.g., nosedive after studying nosebleed and skydive), subjects might adopt a strategy whereby they recall the studied word(s) that gave rise to the familiarity (nosebleed, skydive) and thereby reject the lure. This method of instantiating retrieval success under conditions in which the target word had not been studied offers converging evidence for the claim that anterior-prefrontal cortex (among other regions) demonstrates enhanced activation during retrieval success.

Abstract:Episodic memory allows a person to recall and mentally reexperience specific episodes from one’s personal past. Studies of episodic memory are of great significance for the diagnosis and the exploration of the mechanism of memory generation. Most of the current studies focus on certain brain regions and pay less attention to the interrelationship between multiple brain regions. To explore the interrelationship in the brain network, we use an open fMRI dataset to construct the brain functional connectivity and effective connectivity network. We establish a binary directed network of the memory when it is reactivated. The binary directed network shows that the occipital lobe and parietal lobe have the most causal connections. The number of edges starting from the superior parietal lobule is the highest, with 49 edges, and 31 of which are connected to the occipital cortex. This means that the interaction between the superior parietal lobule and the occipital lobe plays the most important role in episodic memory, and the superior parietal lobule plays a more causal role in causality. In addition, memory regions such as the precuneus and fusiform also have some edges. The results show that the posterior parietal cortex plays an important role of hub node in the episodic memory network. From the brain network model, more information can be obtained, which is conducive to exploring the brain’s changing pattern in the whole memory process.

Abstract:Abstract In two experiments, words were presented in negatively or neutrally valenced sentences. At test, subjects made old/new recognition judgments to these words. In Experiment 2 only, for words judged old, subjects also indicated whether the words had been studied in a neutral or a negative context. In Experiment 1, left parietal old/new event-related brain potential (ERP) effects were larger and more sustained when elicited by words that had been studied in negative sentences, and a right frontal old/new effect was elicited by these words exclusively. In Experiment 2, the left parietal and right frontal effects elicited by old words correctly assigned to their study context were equivalent in size regardless of the nature of the context; a third ERP old/new effect, maximal over posterior scalp regions, was seen only for words from negative contexts. The findings indicate that incidental retrieval of emotional context gives rise to greater activation in neural systems supporting conscious recollection than does retrieval of nonemotional context. When contextual retrieval is intentional, recollection of emotional and non-emotional information are associated with equivalent engagement of these systems. The findings from Experiment 2 suggest that additional neural circuitry may be activated selectively by emotionally valenced episodic information.

Abstract:The medial temporal lobe (MTL) is the core neural construction related to associative memory. This study sought to explore the dynamic functional connectivity (dFC) between the subdivisions of MTL and other regions in the whole brain. Additionally, it sought to determine relationships between connectivity stability and associative memory function, to elucidate the neural foundation of associative memory from the perspectives of dFC. A Wechsler Memory Scale China revised edition (WMS-RC) measurement and a resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging were conducted to clarify adults’ function of associative memory and dFC patterns in subdivisions of the MTL. A multiple regression analysis was carried out to analyze the relationships described above. The results demonstrated that (i) connectivity in the left brain included the anterior hippocampus (aHIP) and right fusiform (Fusiform_R), middle hippocampus (mHIP) and right inferior parietal lobule (IPL_R), posterior hippocampus (pHIP) and left inferior parietal lobule (IPL_L), perirhinal cortex (PRC) and left supramarginal gyrus (SMG_L), entorhinal cortex (ERC) and [left middle temporal gyrus (MTG_L), left superior parietal lobule (SPL_L), right fusiform (Fusiform_R)], anterior parahippocampal cortex (aPHC) and right precentral gyrus (PCG_R); (ii) connectivity in the right brain included the aHIP and right supramarginal gyrus (SMG_R), mHIP and left paracentral lobule (PCL_L), pHIP and left superior occipital gyrus (SOG_L), PRC and left middle occipital gyrus (MOG_L), ERC and right middle occipital gyrus (MOG_R); (iii) for most connectivity patterns, the more stable the dFC, the better are the associative memory functions. This study elucidates the neural foundations of associative memory in terms of dFC patterns.
Backward Signal from Medial Temporal Lobe in Neural Circuit Reorganization of Primate Inferotemporal Cortex

Abstract:Neuropsychological theories proposed a critical role of the interaction between the medial temporal lobe and neocortex in the formation of long-term memory for facts and events, which has often been tested by learning of a series of paired words or figures in humans. We identify neural mechanisms of this long-term memory formation process by single-unit recording and molecular biological methods in an animal model of visual pair-association task in monkeys. In our previous studies, we found a group of neurons that manifested selective responses to both of the paired associates (pair-coding neuron) in the anterior inferior temporal (IT) cortex. It provides strong evidence that single IT neurons acquire the response-selectivity through associative learning, and suggests that the reorganized neural circuits for the pair-coding neurons serve as the memory engram of the pair-association learning. In this article, we investigated further mechanisms of the neural circuit reorganization. First, we tested the role of the backward connections from the medial temporal lobe to IT cortex. lbotenic acid was injected unilaterally into the entorhinal and perirhinal cortex which provided massive backward projections ipsilaterally to IT cortex. We found that the limbic lesion disrupted the associative code of the IT neurons between the paired associates, without impairing the visual response to each stimulus. Second, we ask why the limbic-neocortical interactions are so important. We hypothesize that limbic neurons would undergo rapid modification of synaptic connectivity and provide backward signals that guide reorganization of neocortical neural circuits. We then investigated the molecular basis of such rapid synaptic modifiability by detecting the expression of immediate-early genes. We found strong expression of zif268 during the learning of a new set of paired associates, most intensively in area 36 of the perirhinal cortex. All these results with visual pair-association task support our hypothesis, and demonstrate that the ‘consolidation’ process, which was first proposed on the basis of clinico-psychological evidence, can now be examined in the primate with neurophysiolocical and molecular biological approaches.
The Common Neural Basis of Autobiographical Memory, Prospection, Navigation, Theory of Mind, and the Default Mode: A Quantitative Meta-analysis

Abstract:Abstract A core brain network has been proposed to underlie a number of different processes, including remembering, prospection, navigation, and theory of mind [Buckner, R. L., & Carroll, D. C. Self-projection and the brain. Trends in Cognitive Sciences, 11, 49–57, 2007]. This purported network—medial prefrontal, medial-temporal, and medial and lateral parietal regions—is similar to that observed during default-mode processing and has been argued to represent self-projection [Buckner, R. L., & Carroll, D. C. Self-projection and the brain. Trends in Cognitive Sciences, 11, 49–57, 2007] or scene-construction [Hassabis, D., & Maguire, E. A. Deconstructing episodic memory with construction. Trends in Cognitive Sciences, 11, 299–306, 2007]. To date, no systematic and quantitative demonstration of evidence for this common network has been presented. Using the activation likelihood estimation (ALE) approach, we conducted four separate quantitative meta-analyses of neuroimaging studies on: (a) autobiographical memory, (b) navigation, (c) theory of mind, and (d) default mode. A conjunction analysis between these domains demonstrated a high degree of correspondence. We compared these findings to a separate ALE analysis of prospection studies and found additional correspondence. Across all domains, and consistent with the proposed network, correspondence was found within the medial-temporal lobe, precuneus, posterior cingulate, retrosplenial cortex, and the temporo-parietal junction. Additionally, this study revealed that the core network extends to lateral prefrontal and occipital cortices. Autobiographical memory, prospection, theory of mind, and default mode demonstrated further reliable involvement of the medial prefrontal cortex and lateral temporal cortices. Autobiographical memory and theory of mind, previously studied as distinct, exhibited extensive functional overlap. These findings represent quantitative evidence for a core network underlying a variety of cognitive domains.

Voluntary Explicit versus Involuntary Conceptual Memory Are Associated with Dissociable fMRI Responses in Hippocampus, Amygdala, and Parietal Cortex for Emotional and Neutral Word Pairs

Abstract:Abstract Although functional neuroimaging studies have supported the distinction between explicit and implicit forms of memory, few have matched explicit and implicit tests closely, and most of these tested perceptual rather than conceptual implicit memory. We compared event-related fMRI responses during an intentional test, in which a group of participants used a cue word to recall its associate from a prior study phase, with those in an incidental test, in which a different group of participants used the same cue to produce the first associate that came to mind. Both semantic relative to phonemic processing at study, and emotional relative to neutral word pairs, increased target completions in the intentional test, but not in the incidental test, suggesting that behavioral performance in the incidental test was not contaminated by voluntary explicit retrieval. We isolated the neural correlates of successful retrieval by contrasting fMRI responses to studied versus unstudied cues for which the equivalent “target” associate was produced. By comparing the difference in this repetition-related contrast across the intentional and incidental tests, we could identify the correlates of voluntary explicit retrieval. This contrast revealed increased bilateral hippocampal responses in the intentional test, but decreased hippocampal responses in the incidental test. A similar pattern in the bilateral amygdale was further modulated by the emotionality of the word pairs, although surprisingly only in the incidental test. Parietal regions, however, showed increased repetition-related responses in both tests. These results suggest that the neural correlates of successful voluntary explicit memory differ in directionality, even if not in location, from the neural correlates of successful involuntary implicit (or explicit) memory, even when the incidental test taps conceptual processes.

Abstract:Advances in ultra-high field 7 Tesla functional magnetic resonance imaging (7T fMRI) have provided unprecedented opportunities to gain insights into the neural underpinnings supporting human memory. The hippocampus, a heterogeneous brain structure comprising several subfields plays a central role during vivid re-experiencing of autobiographical memories (AM). However, due to technical limitations, how hippocampal subfields differentially support AM, whether this contribution is specific to one portion along the hippocampal long-axis, and how subfields are functionally connected with other brain regions typically associated with AM retrieval remains elusive. Here, we leveraged technical advances of parallel imaging and employed a submillimeter Echo Planar Imaging sequence over the whole brain while participants re-experienced vivid, detail-rich AM. We found that all hippocampal subfields along the long-axis were engaged during AM retrieval. Nonetheless, only the pre/parasubiculum within the anterior body of the hippocampus, contributed over and above to AM retrieval. Moreover, whole-brain functional connectivity analyses of the same data revealed that this part of the hippocampus was the only one that was strongly connected to other brain regions typically associated with AM, such as the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) and medial/lateral parietal regions. In the context of the broader literature, our results support recent proposals that the anterior body of the pre/parasubiculum may play an essential role in scene-based cognition, such as the re-experience of personal past events.

Abstract:Neuroimaging studies using autobiographical recall methods investigated the neural correlates of happy autobiographical memories (AMs). The scope of the present activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analysis was to quantitatively analyze neuroimaging studies of happy AMs conducted with autobiographical recall paradigms. A total of 17 studies (12 fMRI; 5 PET) on healthy individuals were included in this meta-analysis. During recall of happy life events, consistent activation foci were found in the frontal gyrus, the cingulate cortex, the basal ganglia, the parahippocampus/hippocampus, the hypothalamus, and the thalamus. The result of this quantitative coordinate-based ALE meta-analysis provides an objective view of brain responses associated with AM recollection of happy events, thus identifying brain areas consistently activated across studies. This extended brain network included frontal and limbic regions involved in remembering emotionally relevant positive events. The frontal gyrus and the cingulate cortex may be responsible for cognitive appraisal processes during recollection of happy AMs, while the subthalamic nucleus and globus pallidus may be involved in pleasure reactions associated with recollection of happy life events. These findings shed light on the neural network involved in recalling positive AMs in healthy individuals, opening further avenues for future research in clinical populations with mood disorders.

Abstract:The ability to represent concepts and the relationships between them is critical to human cognition. How does the brain code relationships between items that share basic conceptual properties (e.g., dog and wolf) while simultaneously representing associative links between dissimilar items that co-occur in particular contexts (e.g., dog and bone)? To clarify the neural bases of these semantic components in neurologically intact participants, both types of semantic relationship were investigated in an fMRI study optimized for anterior temporal lobe (ATL) coverage. The clear principal finding was that the same core semantic network (ATL, superior temporal sulcus, ventral prefrontal cortex) was equivalently engaged when participants made semantic judgments on the basis of association or conceptual similarity. Direct comparisons revealed small, weaker differences for conceptual similarity > associative decisions (e.g., inferior prefrontal cortex) and associative > conceptual similarity (e.g., ventral parietal cortex) which appear to reflect graded differences in task difficulty. Indeed, once reaction time was entered as a covariate into the analysis, no associative versus category differences remained. The paper concludes with a discussion of how categorical/feature-based and associative relationships might be represented within a single, unified semantic system.

Abstract:Previous research has revealed two different old/new effects, the early mid-frontal old/new effect (a.k.a., FN400) and the late parietal old/new effect (a.k.a., LPC), which relate to familiarity and recollection processes, respectively. Although associative recognition is thought to be more based on recollection, recent studies have confirmed that familiarity can make a great contribution when the items of a pair are unitized. However, it remains unclear whether the old/new effects are sensitive to the nature of different semantic relations. The current ERP (event-related potentials) study aimed to address this, where picture pairs of thematic, taxonomic, and unrelated relations served as stimuli and participants were required to discriminate the pair type: intact, rearranged, "old + new", or new. We confirmed both FN400 and LPC. Our findings, by comparing the occurrence and the amplitudes of these two components, implicate that the neural activity of associative recognition is sensitive to the semantic relation of stimuli and depends more on stimulus properties, that the familiarity of a single item can impact the neural activities in discriminating associative pairs, and that the interval length between encoding and test modulates the familiarity of unrelated pairs. In addition, the dissociation between FN400 and LPC reinforces the dual-process models.

Abstract:Dynamic interactions between large-scale brain networks underpin human cognitive processes, but their electrophysiological mechanisms remain elusive. The triple network model, encompassing the salience (SN), default mode (DMN), and frontoparietal (FPN) networks, provides a framework for understanding these interactions. We analyzed intracranial EEG recordings from 177 participants across four diverse episodic memory experiments, each involving encoding as well as recall phases. Phase transfer entropy analysis revealed consistently higher directed information flow from the anterior insula (AI), a key SN node, to both DMN and FPN nodes. This directed influence was significantly stronger during memory tasks compared to resting-state, highlighting the AI's task-specific role in coordinating large-scale network interactions. This pattern persisted across externally-driven memory encoding and internally-governed free recall. Control analyses using the inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) showed an inverse pattern, with DMN and FPN exerting higher influence on IFG, underscoring the AI's unique role. We observed task-specific suppression of high-gamma power in the posterior cingulate cortex/precuneus node of the DMN during memory encoding, but not recall. Crucially, these results were replicated across all four experiments spanning verbal and spatial memory domains with high Bayes replication factors. Our findings advance understanding of how coordinated neural network interactions support memory processes, highlighting the AI's critical role in orchestrating large-scale brain network dynamics during both memory encoding and retrieval. By elucidating the electrophysiological basis of triple network interactions in episodic memory, our study provides insights into neural circuit dynamics underlying memory function and offer a framework for investigating network disruptions in memory-related disorders.
