Abstract:Although land-use change in the riparian corridor can be a viable option in mitigating nonpoint source pollution, its impacts under different geographical scales have yet to be ascertained. The goal of this research was to quantify the hydrologic impacts of land-use change in the riparian zones of a subwatershed through the use of an integrated modeling approach. The Hydrological Simulation Program-Fortran model was adopted to develop a hydrologic and water quality model for the Upper Little Miami River basin, a headwater subwatershed in Ohio, USA. After calibration and validation, the model was used to predict the hydrologic and water quality impacts under various scenarios of buffer zones. Results indicated that the 60 m, 90 m, and 120 m riparian forest and wetland buffers were able to reduce the mean annual flow by 0.26 to 0.28%, nitrite plus nitrate by 2.9 to 6.1%, and total phosphorus by 3.2 to 7.8%. Wilcoxon signed rank test for paired data revealed significant differences between the base case (no change in land-use pattern) and scenarios of forest or wetland buffer zones, between pairs of different buffer widths, and between pairs of forest and wetland buffers within a single width level. By integrating environmental information and systems analysis, this study has demonstrated that HSPF is an effective tool to model nonpoint source pollution from riparian land-use changes, even in a small subwatershed with relatively minimal anthropogenic influences. The findings from this research may be useful in facilitating the development of management solutions.
Assessment of hydrologic vulnerability to urbanization and climate change in a rapidly changing watershed in the Southeast U.S.

Abstract:This study assessed the combined effects of increased urbanization and climate change on streamflow in the Yadkin-Pee Dee watershed (North Carolina, USA) and focused on the conversion from forest to urban land use, the primary land use transition occurring in the watershed. We used the Soil and Water Assessment Tool to simulate future (2050-2070) streamflow and baseflow for four combined climate and land use scenarios across the Yadkin-Pee Dee River watershed and three subwatersheds. The combined scenarios pair land use change and climate change scenarios together. Compared to the baseline, projected streamflow increased in three out of four combined scenarios and decreased in one combined scenario. Baseflow decreased in all combined scenarios, but decreases were largest in subwatersheds that lost the most forest. The effects of land use change and climate change were additive, amplifying the increases in runoff and decreases in baseflow. Streamflow was influenced more strongly by climate change than land use change. However, for baseflow the reverse was true; land use change tended to drive baseflow more than climate change. Land use change was also a stronger driver than climate in the most urban subwatershed. In the most extreme land use and climate projection the volume of the 1-day, 100 year flood nearly doubled at the watershed outlet. Our results underscore the importance of forests as hydrologic regulators buffering streamflow and baseflow from hydrologic extremes. Additionally, our results suggest that land managers and policy makers need to consider the implications of forest loss on streamflow and baseflow when planning for future urbanization and climate change adaptation options.

Abstract:Riparian buffers are important features that help to mitigate suspended sediment loads within rivers running through agricultural landscapes. Evaluating their effectiveness for sediment control by different modelling approaches can help direct beneficial management practices. The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model and the Adapted Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) based model were used for prediction of suspended sediment concentrations (SSC) and sediment loads in the Mill River watershed (PEI, Canada). Those models were then used to assess the impact of riparian buffer widths in reducing sediment loads. The ANFIS model predicted measured SSC more accurately than the SWAT model. The relationship between buffer width and sediment reduction was asymptotic, and the relationship begins to plateau when the width reaches 50 m. Increasing the buffer width from 15 to 100 m led to an increase in sediment loads retention of 30.5% and 36.2% of the total stream sediment load for the SWAT and ANFIS models, respectively. This study highlighted that a data-driven ANFIS based model can be used to simulate the impact of land use changes on the sediment delivery in a river.

Abstract:Buffer strips continue to feature in the management of agricultural runoff and water pollution in many countries. Existing research has explored their efficacy for reducing environmental problems in different geoclimatic settings but, the evidence on the efficacy of different vegetation treatments is less abundant than that for other buffer strip characteristics, including width, and is more contradictory in nature. With policy targets for various environmental outcomes including water or air quality and net zero pointing to the need for conversion of agricultural land, the need for robust experimental evidence on the relative benefits of different vegetation types in buffer strips is now renewed. Our experiment used a replicated plot scale facility to compare the efficacy of 12 m wide buffer strips for controlling runoff and suspended sediment loss during 15 sampled storms spanning 2017‐2020. The buffer strips comprised three vegetation treatments: a deep rooting grass (Festulolium cv. Prior), a short rotation coppice willow and native broadleaved woodland trees. Over the duration of the monitoring period, reductions in total runoff, compared with the experimental control, were in the order: willow buffer strips (49%); deciduous woodland buffer strips (46%); grass buffer strips (33%). The corresponding reductions in suspended sediment loss, relative to the experimental control, were ordered: willow buffer strips (44%) > deciduous woodland buffer strips (30%) > grass buffer strips (29%). Given the three‐year duration of our new dataset, our results should be seen as providing evidence on the impacts during the establishment phase of the of the treatments. The bacteriological tests hitherto proposed for these products are discussed. The occurrence of salmonellas, which may cause a health hazard, is described together with the results of pasteurization treatments which offer a prospect of eliminating these bacteria.

Abstract:There is a broad consensus that riparian buffers provide environmental benefits and increase resilience to climate change. In this study, we examined the potential benefits of multi-zone riparian buffers with outer layers planted in perennial crops (i.e., partially harvested buffers). This was accomplished by developing a simplified regional modeling tool, BioVEST, which was applied in the Mid-Atlantic region of the USA. Our analysis revealed that a substantial portion of variable costs to produce biomass for energy can potentially be offset by values provided by ecosystem services from partially harvested riparian buffers. Ecosystem services were monetized and found to represent a substantial fraction (median = ~42%) of variable crop production cost. Simulated water-quality improvements and carbon benefits generally occurred where buffer area was available, but hotspots occurred in different watersheds, suggesting potential trade-offs in decisions about buffer locations. A portion of buffers could be eligible for ecosystem service payments under US government incentive programs. Partially harvested buffers could represent a sustainable and climate-resilient part of multi-functional agricultural landscapes, and one that could become economically viable if farmers are able to reap the value of providing ecosystem services and if logistical challenges are resolved. Our results suggest that payments for ecosystem services can close the gap between what biorefineries are willing to pay and what landowners are willing to accept to grow and harvest perennials along streams.

Abstract:Saturated buffers are a newly developed agricultural best management practice used to redirect tile flow away from waterways, thereby mitigating nutrient losses and downstream eutrophication. This study evaluated the potential benefits of a novel saturated buffer design, which included pitchfork‐shaped (PF) dispersion lines and a backflow check valve, that was installed alongside a traditional or standard (ST) buffer on a field in Moultrie County, Illinois, in the spring of 2019. Daily flow measurements and routine water samples were used to monitor the movement of water through both buffers and estimate nutrient loads. During observation days in 2020 and 2021, the PF buffer diverted 35% and 1.9% of incoming tile flow, respectively, while the ST buffer increased effluent rates by 116% and 137% over the same period. Both the PF and ST buffers experienced backflow from 30% to 47% of the monitoring period, well above the often reported 5%. Ultimately, the efficacy of saturated buffers could be improved with minimal, low‐cost additions to their designs. Check valves are a simple supplement to saturated buffer design that can enhance flow diversion and potential nutrient removal. Added dispersion lines provide more opportunity for diversion of tile flow; however, they require more land to be removed from agricultural production and could increase backflow volumes, so the costs and benefits should be weighed.

Abstract:Abstract Our objectives are (1) to compare tree sap flux density ( J s in g cm −2 d −1 ) and stomatal conductance ( G s in mmol m −2 s −1 ) across five dominant species, red maple ( Acer rubrum ), sweetgum ( Liquidambar styraciflua ), tulip poplar ( Liriodendron tulipifera ), loblolly pine ( Pinus taeda ), and oak species ( Quercus spp.), (2) to quantity riparian buffer stand transpiration ( E s in mm d −1 ), and (3) to link riparian buffer E s of residual trees to stream discharge. In June 2010, the above species were instrumented with sap flow sensors in a pair (HF1 and HF2) of 12 hectare gauged watersheds. HF1 was clearcut, leaving a 15.2‐m riparian buffer around the stream, and HF2 was the reference. Trees were harvested in the riparian buffer reducing HF1 riparian buffer basal area by 27%. The riparian buffer growing season net radiation increased from 11.9 W m −2 preharvest to an average of 24.3 W m −2 postharvest. HF1 stream growing season discharge increased dramatically (150%) from the preharvest to postharvest period. HF1 2010 preharvest growing season soil moisture was 22.5%. HF1 postharvest growing season soil moisture was 28.5% in 2011, 26.5% in 2012, and 27.2% in 2013. HF2 canopy cover, energy input, and soil moisture showed little change over the same period. From preharvest to postharvest, mean daily growing season J s of trees in HF1 increased in all species. A reduction in HF1 G s was less evident over the study vapour pressure deficit range in loblolly pine, red maple, and tulip poplar than in oak and sweetgum during the postharvest period. HF1 residual trees in the riparian buffer used 43% more water in growing season postharvest (314 mm) than growing preharvest (220 mm) period. This resulted in an 8% reduction in stream discharge because of an increase in riparian buffer E s . Although clearcutting increased stream discharge, we conclude that the increase in transpiration by the residual trees in the riparian buffer will, at least, partially mitigate the hydrologic effects of forest removal through increased transpiration. Abstract:Identifying the multi-scale spatial relationship between land use and water quality is critical for determining the priorities and key areas of river management. To more accurately identify the scale effect of land-use patterns on water quality and quantitatively distinguish the difference in the impacts of land-use composition and configuration on water quality, we used 94 sites to extract the upstream catchment and riparian buffer zone with different widths. The results showed that the ability of land use variables with different buffer widths to explain water quality differed slightly from the ability of these variables at the catchment scale, and the joint explanatory ability of land use composition and configuration was greater than that of each individually. The patch density and landscape shape index of cultivated land, shrubland, and built-up land in the buffer area close to the water bodies were the main factors for the increase in the concentration of total nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, total phosphorus, and suspended solids. As the width of the buffer increased, the role of the percent of land use increased. Our research indicates that water quality management needs to adopt a multi-scale perspective and focus on key local areas while coordinating at a broader scale.

Impacts of soil, climate, and phenology on retention of dissolved agricultural nutrients by permanent-cover buffers

Abstract:Nutrient losses from farms affects environmental and human health, but retention by riparian buffers can vary by nutrient identity, flow path, soil texture, seasonality, and buffer width. On conventional farms with corn, we test the relationships between levels of dissolved nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) in downslope surface-water, and flow paths relating to porewater in soils (to 40 cm deep), groundwater of the saturated zone (to 2.5 m deep), soil nutrient pools, and changes in plant biomass and tissue quality by season. We found that the major drivers of surface-water nutrients were multi-factor and nutrient-specific, variously relating to soil, climate, vegetation uptake, and tiling on clay soils. N retention was best explained by soil type, with 10 times more surface-water N in the sand versus clay setting, despite identical fertilization rates on corn. P retention was best explained by precipitation and time of year. Vegetation uptake was strongest for shallow-soil porewater, and was greatest in buffers where root biomass was 20 times greater by weight. We were unable to detect any impact of vegetative uptake on groundwater nutrients. Overall, peak nutrient inputs to surface-water were in early summer, fall, and winter - all times when plant uptake is low. Buffers appear to be a necessary component of nutrient capture on farms, but insufficient unless partnered with measures that reduce nutrient flows at times when plants are inactive.

Abstract:In this study, we employed the random forest model to identify the riparian buffer zone in the upper and middle reaches of the Ziwu River, used the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) to simulate and calculate the nonpoint source pollution load in the riparian buffer zone, and used empirical formulas to estimate the pollutant concentration when surface runoff passes the edge of the riparian buffer zone. Moreover, through correlation analysis, we identified the main factors that affect the safe width of the riparian buffer zone. By combining these factors with the characteristic parameters of the riparian buffer zone and the water quality demand, we analyzed and calculated the safe width of the riparian buffer zone. Our findings are as follows: 1 the simulated values of the SWAT model were highly consistent with the measured values. Specifically, the calibration and verification results of the hydrological station achieved Ens ≥ 0.65, RE < ± 15%, and R 2 ≥ 0.85, while the overall total nitrogen and total phosphorus loads achieved Ens ≥ 0.65, RE < ± 15%, and R 2 > 0.65. 2 We found that the total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) loads in the riparian buffer zone gradually increased from upstream to downstream. Among these loads, the normal season had the largest TN and TP concentrations reaching the edge of the riparian buffer zone, while the dry season had the minimum concentrations. 3 The factors affecting the safe width of the riparian buffer zone included the connectivity, slope of the buffer zone, cultivated land area, and regional population density. For the effective protection of water quality, it is recommended that the upstream, midstream, and downstream buffer zones be at least 77.9 m, 33.37 m, and 60.25 m wide, respectively.

Carbon storage of headwater riparian zones in an agricultural landscape

Abstract:Background: In agricultural regions, streamside forests have been reduced in age and extent, or removed entirely to maximize arable cropland. Restoring and reforesting such riparian zones to mature forest, particularly along headwater streams (which constitute 90% of stream network length) would both increase carbon storage and improve water quality. Age and management-related cover/condition classes of headwater stream networks can be used to rapidly inventory carbon storage and sequestration potential if carbon storage capacity of conditions classes and their relative distribution on the landscape are known. Results: Based on the distribution of riparian zone cover/condition classes in sampled headwater reaches, current and potential carbon storage was extrapolated to the remainder of the North Carolina Coastal Plain stream network. Carbon stored in headwater riparian reaches is only about 40% of its potential capacity, based on 242 MgC/ha stored in sampled mature riparian forest (forest > 50 y old). The carbon deficit along 57,700 km headwater Coastal Plain streams is equivalent to about 25TgC in 30-m-wide riparian buffer zones and 50 TgC in 60-m-wide buffer zones. Conclusions: Estimating carbon storage in recognizable age-and cover-related condition classes provides a rapid way to better inventory current carbon storage, estimate storage capacity, and calculate the potential for additional storage. In light of the particular importance of buffer zones in headwater reaches in agricultural landscapes in ameliorating nutrient and sediment input to streams, encouraging the restoration of riparian zones to mature forest along headwater reaches worldwide has the potential to not only improve water quality, but also simultaneously reduce atmospheric CO2.
Groundwater nitrate removal in riparian buffer zones: a review of research progress in the past 20 years

Abstract:This review evaluates research in the past 20 years focusing on groundwater nitrate removal in the riparian zones of agricultural watersheds. Studies have reported a large range in the magnitude of groundwater and nitrate fluxes to buffers in different hydrogeologic settings. An earlier focus on buffers with shallow subsurface flow has expanded to include sites with deep flow paths and groundwater-fed overland flow. Nitrate removal efficiency and the width required for removal have been linked to riparian sediment texture and depth to an impervious layer. Denitrification has been identified as the dominant mechanism of nitrate removal based on evidence that this process occurs at depth in many buffers which contain buried organic-rich deposits. Several studies have assessed the cumulative effect of riparian buffers on nitrate removal at the watershed scale. Despite considerable research progress areas of uncertainty still remain. Buffers with coarse-textured sediments located in landscapes with upslope sand aquifers have received most attention. In contrast, few sites have been analysed in weathered bedrock and glacial till landscapes. Many studies have reported nitrate removal efficiency based on nitrate concentrations rather than measuring groundwater fluxes which assess the magnitude of nitrate removal. More information is needed on interactions between riparian hydrological flow paths and biogeochemical processes. Further research is recommended on the effect of riparian zone nitrate removal at the watershed scale and long-term monitoring with respect to buffer restoration, the ability to sustain nitrate removal and responses to land use and climate change.

A Review of Vegetated Buffers and a Meta-Analysis of Their Mitigation Efficacy in Reducing Nonpoint Source Pollution.

Abstract:Vegetated buffers are a well-studied and widely used agricultural management practice for reducing nonpoint-source pollution. A wealth of literature provides experimental data on their mitigation efficacy. This paper aggregated many of these results and performed a meta-analysis to quantify the relationships between pollutant removal efficacy and buffer width, buffer slope, soil type, and vegetation type. Theoretical models for removal efficacy (Y) vs. buffer width (w) were derived and tested against data from the surveyed literature using statistical analyses. A model of the form Y = K x (1-e(-bxw)), (0 < K < or = 100) successfully captured the relationship between buffer width and pollutant removal, where K reflects the maximum removal efficacy of the buffer and b reflects its probability to remove any single particle of pollutant in a unit distance. Buffer width alone explains 37, 60, 44, and 35% of the total variance in removal efficacy for sediment, pesticides, N, and P, respectively. Buffer slope was linearly associated with sediment removal efficacy either positively (when slope < or = 10%) or negatively (when slope > 10%). Buffers composed of trees have higher N and P removal efficacy than buffers composed of grasses or mixtures of grasses and trees. Soil drainage type did not show a significant effect on pollutant removal efficacy. Based on our analysis, a 30-m buffer under favorable slope conditions (approximately 10%) removes more than 85% of all the studied pollutants. These models predicting optimal buffer width/slope can be instrumental in the design, implementation, and modeling of vegetated buffers for treating agricultural runoff.

Abstract:The extracellular matrix is composed of a large number of different modular proteins. Matrilin-2 is a newly described member of the protein superfamily with von Willebrand factor A-like modules. To examine the expression of matrilin-2 in human skin, the distribution of protein and mRNA was studied by immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization. In addition, immunoblotting and real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction were used to investigate the expression of matrilin-2 in keratinocyte and fibroblast cultures. In vivo, keratinocytes and fibroblasts were both found to express matrilin-2 mRNA and deposit the protein at the basal side of the dermal-epidermal basement membrane. Matrilin-2 molecules synthesized by the two cell types in vitro appeared to be processed differently by cell-associated proteases. Transcription of matrilin-2 mRNA in keratinocytes was enhanced by a diffusible factor produced by fibroblasts, suggesting a regulatory mechanism for the production of extracellular matrix at the dermal-epidermal junction. These findings demonstrate that matrilin-2 is expressed in normal skin by keratinocytes and fibroblasts and may thus contribute to cutaneous homeostasis.
Hydrochemical buffer assessment in agricultural landscapes: from local to catchment scale

Abstract:Non-point-source pollution of surface and groundwater is a prominent environmental issue in rural catchments, with major consequences on water supply and aquatic ecosystem quality. Among surface-water protection measures, environmental or landscape management policies support the implementation and the management of buffer zones. Although a great number of studies have focused on buffer zones, quantification of the buffer effect is still a recurring question. The purpose of this article is a critical review of the assessment of buffer-zone functioning. Our objective is to provide land planners and managers with a set of variables to assess the limits and possibilities for quantifying buffer impact at the catchment scale. We first consider the scale of the local landscape feature. The most commonly used empirical method for assessing buffers is to calculate water/nutrient budgets from inflow-outflow monitoring at the level of landscape structures. We show that several other parameters apart from mean depletion of flux can be used to describe buffer functions. Such parameters include variability, with major implication for water management. We develop a theoretical framework to clarify the assessment of the buffer effect and propose a systematic analysis taking account of temporal variability. Second, we review the current assessment of buffer effects at the catchment scale according to the theoretical framework established at the local scale. Finally, we stress the limits of direct empirical assessment at the catchment scale and, in particular, we emphasize the hierarchy in hydrological processes involved at the catchment scale: The landscape feature function is constrained by other factors (climate and geology) that are of importance at a broader spatial and temporal scale.
Streamside Forest Buffer Width Needed to Protect Stream Water Quality, Habitat, and Organisms: A Literature Review

Abstract:Abstract This literature review addresses how wide a streamside forest buffer needs to be to protect water quality, habitat, and biota for small streams (≤~100 km 2 or ~5th order watershed) with a focus on eight functions: (1) subsurface nitrate removal varied inversely with subsurface water flux and for sites with water flux >50 l/m/day (~40% avg base flow to Chesapeake Bay) median removal efficiency was 55% (26‐64%) for buffers <40 m wide and 89% (27‐99%) for buffers >40 m wide; (2) sediment trapping was ~65 and ~85% for a 10‐ and 30‐m buffer, respectively, based on streamside field or experimentally loaded sites; (3) stream channel width was significantly wider when bordered by ~25‐m buffer (relative to no forest) with no additional widening for buffers ≥25 m; (4) channel meandering and bank erosion were lower in forest but more studies are needed to determine the effect of buffer width; (5) temperature remained within 2°C of levels in a fully forested watershed with a buffer ≥20 m but full protection against thermal change requires buffers ≥30 m; (6) large woody debris (LWD) has been poorly studied but we infer a buffer width equal to the height of mature streamside trees (~30 m) can provide natural input levels; (7, 8) macroinvertebrate and fish communities , and their instream habitat, remain near a natural or semi‐natural state when buffered by ≥30 m of forest. Overall, buffers ≥30 m wide are needed to protect the physical, chemical, and biological integrity of small streams.

Abstract:The riparian vegetation buffer zone plays an important role in the prevention and control of non-point source pollution, and consideration should be given to selecting one with a lower cost and better effect. The SWAT model was used to simulate the regulation ability of riparian vegetation buffer zone layout on runoff, nitrogen, and phosphorus in the Jiawang Basin, and five different vegetation buffer zone layout scenarios were set up. The results showed that (1) the SWAT model has good applicability in simulating runoff and water quality in the Jiawang Basin; (2) the reduction rates of runoff, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus in continuous forest riverbank buffer zones reached 2.46%, 6.63%, and 9.18%, and their regulatory effects were better than those in grasslands; (3) there is not much difference in the inhibitory effect of forest and grassland on total nitrogen, but the discontinuous forest buffer zone has a better reduction effect on total phosphorus than grassland. Therefore, in the actual arrangement of vegetation buffer zones, it should be tailored to local conditions to achieve ideal non-point source pollution prevention and control effects at a lower cost.

Abstract:We examined food web structure in headwater streams to determine whether riparian buffers can mitigate the effects of agricultural land use on stream ecosystem function. Study sites were located in the Midwestern US and divided into three land use groups (forested, buffered, agricultural) based on the amount of riparian forest and row crop agriculture in the watershed. Stable isotope analysis (δ 13 C and δ 15 N) was performed on basal energy sources and consumers (6 invertebrate groups and 7 fish species) with isotopic metrics used to assess variation in food web structure related to land use, instream environmental parameters, and food resources. Land use differences were associated with community-wide isotopic shifts with all trophic diversity metrics greater in forested compared to agricultural streams, whereas buffered streams were generally intermediate. Agricultural streams had compressed food webs with high trophic redundancy indicative of a shared resource pool for all consumers. In contrast, forested and buffered stream food webs showed larger trophic niche area due to greater utilization of detrital energy and higher variability in trophic position among invertebrates and fish. Circular statistics revealed fish communities shifted to lower trophic positions and increased dependence on periphyton production in agricultural streams. The presence of riparian forests was associated with a broader range of resources used by consumers, expanded trophic diversity, and elevated fish trophic position in buffered streams. Results suggest that riparian forests can improve food web structure in streams impacted by croplands and provide further support for restoring buffer areas to moderate adverse effects of agriculture.
