Abstract:This continuing education article presents a case study of a teenage male who was thrown out of a pickup truck after a motor vehicle accident. The author provides the details of the case, then invites readers to consider the possible events that led to the young man's injuries. The author then describes how the patient was thrown out of the back of the pickup truck onto the street, and his resulting injuries. The author focuses on the diagnostic tests that should be conducted in the emergency department. Magnetic resonance (MR) is the imaging modality of choice when one wants to evaluate spinal cord injury as well as paraspinal soft tissues. Detailed radiographs are reproduced in the article.
