Abstract:Anomalies of the omnipresent earth magnetic (i.e., geomagnetic) field in an indoor environment, caused by local disturbances due to construction materials, give rise to noisy direction sensing that hinders any dead reckoning system. In this paper, we turn this unpalatable phenomenon into a favorable one. We present Magicol, an indoor localization and tracking system that embraces the local disturbances of the geomagnetic field. We tackle the low discernibility of the magnetic field by vectorizing consecutive magnetic signals on a per-step basis, and use vectors to shape the particle distribution in the estimation process. Magicol can also incorporate WiFi signals to achieve much improved positioning accuracy for indoor environments with WiFi infrastructure. We perform an in-depth study on the fusion of magnetic and WiFi signals. We design a two-pass bidirectional particle filtering process for maximum accuracy, and propose an on-demand WiFi scan strategy for energy savings. We further propose a compliant-walking method for location database construction that drastically simplifies the site survey effort. We conduct extensive experiments at representative indoor environments, including an office building, an underground parking garage, and a supermarket in which Magicol achieved a 90 percentile localization accuracy of 5 m, 1 m, and 8 m, respectively, using the magnetic field alone. The fusion with WiFi leads to 90 percentile accuracy of 3.5 m for localization and 0.9 m for tracking in the office environment. When using only the magnetism, Magicol consumes 9 × less energy in tracking compared to WiFi-based tracking.
Robust Indoor Localization and Map Matching Algorithm with Visual SLAM

Abstract:With the rapid development of intelligent robotic technology, global positioning and localization algorithm is attracting much more attention in recent years, especially for unknown indoor environments. In such case, global positioning system (GPS) will lose its effect, and relative positioning systems become more important, including UWB, IMU and VIO, which exist drift phenomenon with time. In this paper, we propose a novel global localization and map matching algorithm suitable for indoor and outdoor unseen environments. Its core algorithm is based on visual SLAM to generate the sparse map point cloud as well as historical trajectory path. After simply annotating the site drawings, a two-dimensional semantic map of the environment can be obtained. Then the point cloud and trajectory path are matched with the semantic map through a global search algorithm. Finally, the global localization in unknown environment can be easily achieved and the historical trajectory path can be displayed accurately on the site drawing. Real-world experiment shows the effectiveness and robustness of the method.

Abstract:SLAM is widely studied in complex indoor environment reconstruction by mobile robot. The Rao-Blackwellised particle filter based SLAM is used for map construction and the localization of robot. It bases on the scanning data of the velodyne laser radar to perceive the external environment. And the odometer is to provide the status of robot. However, the cumulative error is produced by the odometer during the moving period. In this paper, in order to increase the accuracy of robot motion estimation, the location of the robot is updated by incorporating scanning matching. The localization and map construction of the mobile robot are achieved in indoor environment.

Abstract:By collecting the magnetic field information of each spatial point, we can build a magnetic field fingerprint map. When the user is positioning, the magnetic field measured by the sensor is matched with the magnetic field fingerprint map to identify the user’s location. However, since the magnetic field is easily affected by external magnetic fields and magnetic storms, which can lead to “local temporal-spatial variation”, it is difficult to construct a stable and accurate magnetic field fingerprint map for indoor positioning. This research proposes a new magnetic indoor positioning method, which combines a magnetic sensor array composed of three magnetic sensors and a recurrent probabilistic neural network (RPNN) to realize a high-precision indoor positioning system. The magnetic sensor array can detect subtle magnetic anomalies and spatial variations to improve the stability and accuracy of magnetic field fingerprint maps, and the RPNN model is built for recognizing magnetic field fingerprint. We implement an embedded magnetic sensor array positioning system, which is evaluated in an experimental environment. Our method can reduce the noise caused by the spatial-temporal variation of the magnetic field, thus greatly improving the indoor positioning accuracy, reaching an average positioning accuracy of 0.78 m.

An indoor magnetic field matching positioning solution based on consumer-grade IMU for smartphone

Abstract:Magnetic field matching positioning (MFMP) has become one of the mainstream indoor positioning methods for mass application. However, the problem of the large workload of magnetic field mapping and the instability of the magnetometer bias remains to be solved. This paper designs an indoor MFMP scheme based on consumer-grade Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs). In the magnetic field mapping stage, the high-precision poses of the smartphone obtained by combining a foot-mounted IMU, a smartphone built-in IMU, and a few control points in the building are employed to generate a magnetic field grid map with high efficiency. In the real-time positioning stage, the relative trajectory generated by pedestrian dead reckoning (PDR) is used to improve the position discrimination of the magnetic field feature by adding spatial profile; and the differential magnetic field strength in the sensor frame (instead of in the reference frame) is used to achieve matching positioning that is immune to the magnetometer bias. The consistency of the magnetic field maps built using different smartphones show that the proposed magnetic mapping scheme achieves an average efficiency of 37 m2 /min and is not affected by the mapping trajectory and walking speed. The real-time positioning results using multiple smartphones show that the proposed MFMP algorithm is barely affected by the magnetometer bias, and can achieve an average RMS value of ±0.83 meters in a typical office scenario.

Abstract:In the absence of external reference position information (e.g. GNSS) SLAM has proven to be an effective method for indoor navigation. The positioning drift can be reduced with regular loop-closures and global relaxation as the backend, thus achieving a good balance between exploration and exploitation. Although vision-based systems like laser scanners are typically deployed for SLAM, these sensors are heavy, energy inefficient, and expensive, making them unattractive for wearables or smartphone applications. However, the concept of SLAM can be extended to non-optical systems such as magnetometers. Instead of matching features such as walls and furniture using some variation of the ICP algorithm, the local magnetic field can be matched to provide loop-closure and global trajectory updates in a Gaussian Process (GP) SLAM framework. With a MEMS-based inertial measurement unit providing a continuous trajectory, and the matching of locally distinct magnetic field maps, experimental results in this paper show that a drift-free navigation solution in an indoor environment with millimetre-level accuracy can be achieved. The GP-SLAM approach presented can be formulated as a maximum a posteriori estimation problem and it can naturally perform loop-detection, feature-to-feature distance minimization, global trajectory optimization, and magnetic field map estimation simultaneously. Spatially continuous features (i.e. smooth magnetic field signatures) are used instead of discrete feature correspondences (e.g. point-to-point) as in conventional vision-based SLAM. These position updates from the ambient magnetic field also provide enough information for calibrating the accelerometer and gyroscope bias in-use. The only restriction for this method is the need for magnetic disturbances (which is typically not an issue indoors); however, no assumptions are required for the general motion of the sensor.

Abstract:Magnetic field matching (MFM) positioning is one of the mainstream methods of consumer indoor positioning, which has attracted great attention from academia and industry. However, efficient methods for constructing magnetic field maps and matching positioning methods with high stability still need to be developed. This study proposes an indoor MFM positioning scheme enhanced by consumer-grade inertial measurement units that can efficiently generate a magnetic field grid map and achieve robust matching positioning, without the need to actively calibrate the magnetometer bias. When generating the magnetic field map, the proposed method employs a pedestrian positioning and orientation system to efficiently collect data by releasing individual behavioral constraints and reducing the number of control points required. Moreover, a magnetometer bias autocalibration method, aided by the precise attitude, is proposed to simplify the data collection process. During real-time positioning, the position and attitude generated by pedestrian dead reckoning (PDR) are used to generate the differential magnetic field strength in the sensor frame; this achieves matching positioning that is independent of the magnetometer bias. Furthermore, an estimation method for the MFM position noise, based on the magnetic field gradient, is proposed to improve the accuracy of MFM/PDR integrated positioning. Several experiments were conducted to verify the feasibility and performance of the proposed scheme. Only slight differences were found between the magnetic field maps using three different smartphones, showing that the proposed scheme can efficiently generate a high-precision magnetic map. The positioning results of multiple tests conducted using eight different smartphones revealed that the proposed scheme achieves continuous and robust meter-level positioning accuracy.
A Performance Improvement for Indoor Positioning Systems Using Earth's Magnetic Field

Abstract:Although most indoor positioning systems use radio waves, such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or RFID, for application in department stores, exhibition halls, stations, and airports, the accuracy of such technology is easily affected by human shadowing and multipath propagation delay. This study combines the earth's magnetic field strength and Wi-Fi signals to obtain the indoor positioning information with high availability. Wi-Fi signals are first used to identify the user's area under several kinds of environment partitioning methods. Then, the signal pattern comparison is used for positioning calculations using the strength change in the earth's magnetic field among the east-west, north-south, and vertical directions at indoor area. Finally, the k-nearest neighbors (KNN) method and fingerprinting algorithm are used to calculate the fine-grained indoor positioning information. The experiment results show that the average positioning error is 0.57 m in 12-area partitioning, which is almost a 90% improvement in relation to that of one area partitioning. This study also considers the positioning error if the device is held at different angles by hand. A rotation matrix is used to convert the magnetic sensor coordinates from a mobile phone related coordinates into the geographic coordinates. The average positioning error is decreased by 68%, compared to the original coordinates in 12-area partitioning with a 30-degree pitch. In the offline procedure, only the northern direction data are used, which is reduced by 75%, to give an average positioning error of 1.38 m. If the number of reference points is collected every 2 m for reducing 50% of the database requirement, the average positioning error is 1.77 m.

Abstract:With the growing demands for localizing humans and mobile service robots, wireless indoor positioning has become a hot topic. Due to inevitable multipath scatterings in indoor spaces, technical challenges still exist. In this paper. we propose a new solution based on vertically uniform alternating magnetic fields. Such fields can be established by long coils driven by watt-level alternating currents with hertz-scale frequencies. Detected by commercial magnetic sensors, the coexisting dual-frequency magnetic fields are able to distribute in indoor spaces with tens of square meters. With 10(4)-km-scale wavelengths, indoor obstacles can be considered as negligible Rayleigh scatters, and thus, this method is robust in complex indoor environments. Insensitive to height, the vertically polarized magnetic fields can be conveniently detected by existing smartphones, implying a human-oriented WIP based on smartphones.

Abstract:With the development of Internet of Things (IoT) technology, people's demand for indoor location-based services is growing. Indoor magnetic field has a wealth of fingerprint information that can be combined with position stamps to construct an indoor magnetic map (IMM). Localization scenarios based on IMM include personnel attendance, equipment tracking, and fire emergency, etc. However, the localization technology is complicated, the localization accuracy based on IMM is generally low, and the localization result lacks credibility due to the fluctuation of indoor magnetic field. Therefore, it is urgent to study a novel localization method in terms of the tradeoff among complexity, accuracy and credibility, which is the purpose of this article. First, the Euclidean distance constraint (EDC) with a variable search radius is proposed to make a rough estimate of the entity's location. Then the iterative interpolation method (IIM) is proposed to refine the local-IMM, and the multi-magnetic- fingerprint-fusion (MMFF) is proposed to match the magnetic fingerprint based on the refined local-IMM. In short, the proposed method is called focusing matching localization method by combining coarse estimation with fine estimation, which can be abbreviated as EDC-IIM-MMFF. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed localization method is verified by a series of experiments. The tests show that the root mean square error (RMSE) of location solved by the proposed method is less than 0.3 meters, and the 99% cumulative distribution function (CDF) of location error is less than 0.5 meters, and the complexity is lower than the existing methods, such as Gaussian process regression (GPR), extended Kalman filter (EKF), particle filter (PF), etc.

Maloc: A Practical Magnetic Fingerprinting Approach To Indoor Localization Using Smartphones

Abstract:Using magnetic field data as fingerprints for localization in indoor environment has become popular in recent years. Particle filter is often used to improve accuracy. However, most of existing particle filter based approaches either are heavily affected by motion estimation errors, which makes the system unreliable, or impose strong restrictions on smartphone such as fixed phone orientation, which is not practical for real-life use. In this paper, we present an indoor localization system named MaLoc, built on our proposed augmented particle filter. We create several innovations on the motion model, the measurement model and the resampling model to enhance the traditional particle filter. To minimize errors in motion estimation and improve the robustness of particle filter, we augment the particle filter with a dynamic step length estimation algorithm and a heuristic particle resampling algorithm. We use a hybrid measurement model which combines a new magnetic fingerprinting model and the existing magnitude fingerprinting model to improve the system performance and avoid calibrating different smartphone magnetometers. In addition, we present a novel localization quality estimation method and a localization failure detection method to address the "Kidnapped Robot Problem" and improve the overall usability. Our experimental studies show that MaLoc achieves a localization accuracy of 1 similar to 2.8m on average in a large building.

Abstract:Wide expansion of smartphones triggered a rapid demand for precise localization that can meet the requirements of location-based services. Although the global positioning system is widely used for outdoor positioning, it cannot provide the same accuracy for the indoor. As a result, many alternative indoor positioning technologies like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), and geomagnetic field localization have been investigated during the last few years. Today smartphones possess a rich variety of embedded sensors like accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer that can facilitate estimating the current location of the user. Traditional geomagnetic field-based fingerprint localization, although it shows promising results, it is limited by the fact that various smartphones have embedded magnetic sensors from different manufacturers and the magnetic field strength that is measured from these smartphones vary significantly. Consequently, the localization performance from various smartphones is different even when the same localization approach is used. So devising an approach that can provide similar performance with various smartphones is a big challenge. Contrary to previous works that build the fingerprint database from the geomagnetic field data of a single smartphone, this study proposes using the geomagnetic field data collected from multiple smartphones to make the geomagnetic field pattern (MP) database. Many experiments are carried out to analyze the performance of the proposed approach with various smartphones. Additionally, a lightweight threshold technique is proposed that can detect user motion using the acceleration data. Results demonstrate that the localization performance for four different smartphones is almost identical when tested with the database made using the magnetic field data from multiple smartphones than that of which considers the magnetic field data from only one smartphone. Moreover, the performance comparison with previous research indicates that the overall performance of smartphones is improved.
An Accurate Visual-Inertial Integrated Geo-Tagging Method for Crowdsourcing-Based Indoor Localization

Abstract:One of the unavoidable bottlenecks in the public application of passive signal (e.g., received signal strength, magnetic) fingerprinting-based indoor localization technologies is the extensive human effort that is required to construct and update database for indoor positioning. In this paper, we propose an accurate visual-inertial integrated geo-tagging method that can be used to collect fingerprints and construct the radio map by exploiting the crowdsourced trajectory of smartphone users. By integrating multisource information from the smartphone sensors (e.g., camera, accelerometer, and gyroscope), this system can accurately reconstruct the geometry of trajectories. An algorithm is proposed to estimate the spatial location of trajectories in the reference coordinate system and construct the radio map and geo-tagged image database for indoor positioning. With the help of several initial reference points, this algorithm can be implemented in an unknown indoor environment without any prior knowledge of the floorplan or the initial location of crowdsourced trajectories. The experimental results show that the average calibration error of the fingerprints is 0.67 m. A weighted k-nearest neighbor method (without any optimization) and the image matching method are used to evaluate the performance of constructed multisource database. The average localization error of received signal strength (RSS) based indoor positioning and image based positioning are 3.2 m and 1.2 m, respectively, showing that the quality of the constructed indoor radio map is at the same level as those that were constructed by site surveying. Compared with the traditional site survey based positioning cost, this system can greatly reduce the human labor cost, with the least external information.

Abstract:As micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) technology continues its rapid ascent, a growing array of smart devices are integrating lightweight, compact, and cost-efficient magnetometers and inertial sensors, paving the way for advanced human motion analysis. However, sensors housed within smartphones frequently grapple with the detrimental effects of magnetic interference on heading estimation, resulting in diminished accuracy. To counteract this challenge, this study introduces a method that synergistically employs convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and support vector machines (SVMs) for adept interference detection. Utilizing a CNN, we automatically extract profound features from single-step pedestrian motion data that are then channeled into an SVM for interference detection. Based on these insights, we formulate heading estimation strategies aptly suited for scenarios both devoid of and subjected to magnetic interference. Empirical assessments underscore our method's prowess, boasting an impressive interference detection accuracy of 99.38%. In indoor environments influenced by such magnetic disturbances, evaluations conducted along square and equilateral triangle trajectories revealed single-step heading absolute error averages of 2.1891° and 1.5805°, with positioning errors averaging 0.7565 m and 0.3856 m, respectively. These results lucidly attest to the robustness of our proposed approach in enhancing indoor pedestrian positioning accuracy in the face of magnetic interferences.

Abstract:Smartphone camera or inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensor-based systems can be independently used to provide accurate indoor positioning results. However, the accuracy of an IMU-based localization system depends on the magnitude of sensor errors that are caused by external electromagnetic noise or sensor drifts. Smartphone camera based positioning systems depend on the experimental floor map and the camera poses. The challenge in smartphone camera-based localization is that accuracy depends on the rapidness of changes in the user’s direction. In order to minimize the positioning errors in both the smartphone camera and IMU-based localization systems, we propose hybrid systems that combine both the camera-based and IMU sensor-based approaches for indoor localization. In this paper, an indoor experiment scenario is designed to analyse the performance of the IMU-based localization system, smartphone camera-based localization system and the proposed hybrid indoor localization system. The experiment results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed hybrid system and the results show that the proposed hybrid system exhibits significant position accuracy when compared to the IMU and smartphone camera-based localization systems. The performance of the proposed hybrid system is analysed in terms of average localization error and probability distributions of localization errors. The experiment results show that the proposed oriented fast rotated binary robust independent elementary features (BRIEF)-simultaneous localization and mapping (ORB-SLAM) with the IMU sensor hybrid system shows a mean localization error of 0.1398 m and the proposed simultaneous localization and mapping by fusion of keypoints and squared planar markers (UcoSLAM) with IMU sensor-based hybrid system has a 0.0690 m mean localization error and are compared with the individual localization systems in terms of mean error, maximum error, minimum error and standard deviation of error.

A reliable and accurate indoor localization method using phone inertial sensors

Abstract:This paper addresses reliable and accurate indoor localization using inertial sensors commonly found on commodity smartphones. We believe indoor positioning is an important primitive that can enable many ubiquitous computing applications. To tackle the challenges of drifting in estimation, sensitivity to phone position, as well as variability in user walking profiles, we have developed algorithms for reliable detection of steps and heading directions, and accurate estimation and personalization of step length. We've built an end-to-end localization system integrating these modules and an indoor floor map, without the need for infrastructure assistance. We demonstrated for the first time a meter-level indoor positioning system that is infrastructure free, phone position independent, user adaptive, and easy to deploy. We have conducted extensive experiments on users with smartphone devices, with over 50 subjects walking over an aggregate distance of over 40 kilometers. Evaluation results showed our system can achieve a mean accuracy of 1.5m for the in-hand case and 2m for the in-pocket case in a 31m15m testing area.
An Indoor Localization System by Fusing Smartphone Inertial Sensors and Bluetooth Low Energy Beacons

Abstract:Indoor localization becomes a research focus in recent years since. Smartphone-based pedestrian dead reckoning (PDR) is one of the widely-adopted localization techniques with limiting problems such as the drift of inertial sensors. Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) has better performance result which makes it an auxiliary tool for PDR to correct errors. But BLE fingerprint sampling and calibrating are time-consuming and labor-intensive. In this paper, a Support Vector Machine (SVM) classification algorithm based crowdsourcing method is developed and applied to generate BLE landmarks instead of manual work leveraging smartphone sensors and uploaded BLE signals. A particle filter is also used to fusion PDR and landmarks detection results for better localization performance. The experiments show that the proposed fusion algorithm achieved the accuracy of 3.15 m at 90% of the time with dense landmarks (1 landmark per 5 m), which performs 51.76% better than 6.53 m from PDR algorithm. With sparse landmarks (1 landmark per 15 m), the proposed fusion algorithm achieved the accuracy of 3.26 m at 90% of the time. The proposed tracking system using smartphone inertial sensors and BLE beacons can be a promising methodology in practical usages.

Abstract:Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) plays an important role in outdoor and indoor applications ranging from autonomous driving to indoor robotics. Outdoor SLAM has been widely used with the assistance of LiDAR or GPS. For indoor applications, the LiDAR technique does not satisfy the accuracy requirement and the GPS signals will be lost. An accurate and efficient scene sensing technique is required for indoor SLAM. As the most promising 3D sensing technique, the opportunities for indoor SLAM with fringe projection profilometry (FPP) systems are obvious, but methods to date have not fully leveraged the accuracy and speed of sensing that such systems offer. In this paper, we propose a novel FPP-based indoor SLAM method based on the coordinate transformation relationship of FPP, where the 2D-to-3D descriptor-assisted is used for mapping and localization. The correspondences generated by matching descriptors are used for fast and accurate mapping, and the transform estimation between the 2D and 3D descriptors is used to localize the sensor. The provided experimental results demonstrate that the proposed indoor SLAM can achieve the localization and mapping accuracy around one millimeter.

Abstract:With the popularity of wireless networks and smart devices, indoor localization gets developed rapidly. The location-based information services have attracted more and more attentions and the accurate location information has played an important role in the practical application. However, a large position measurement error in the unique indoor environment brings some challenges for accurate indoor localization. In this paper, we propose a hybrid fingerprint localization algorithm by synthetically utilizing Channel State Information (CSI) and magnetic field strength. Firstly, we give an improved Line of Sight (LOS) identification algorithm to narrow down the matching area that localization requires. Then, we combine CSI with magnetic field information to construct a fusion fingerprint database and provide a Multi-Dimensional Scaling k-Nearest Neighbor (MDS-KNN) method to achieve the fingerprint matching. Experiment result reveals that our proposed localization algorithm has better robustness and higher positioning accuracy than traditional fingerprint location methods.
