Abstract:The work presents a solution for completely decentralized data management systems in geographically distributed environments with administratively unrelated or loosely related user groups and in conditions of partial or complete lack of trust between them. The solution is based on the integration of blockchain technology, smart contracts and provenance metadata driven data management. Architecture, operation principles and algorithms developed provides fault-tolerant, safe and reliable management of provenance metadata, control of operations with data files, as well as resource access management in collaborative distributed computing systems. The latter refer to distributed systems formed by combining into a single pool of computer resources of various organizations (institutions) to work together in the framework of some project.

Abstract:Currently, there is no universal method to track who shared what, with whom, when and for what purposes in a verifiable way to create an individual incentive for data owners. A platform that allows data owners to control, delete, and get rewards from sharing their data would be an important enabler of user data-sharing. We propose a usable blockchain- and smart contracts-based framework that allows users to store research data locally and share without losing control and ownership of it. We have created smart contracts for building automatic verification of the conditions for data access that also naturally supports building up a verifiable record of the provenance, incentives for users to share their data and accountability of access. The paper presents a review of the existing work of research data sharing, the proposed blockchain-based framework and an evaluation of the framework by measuring the transaction cost for smart contracts deployment. The results show that nodes responded quickly in all tested cases with a befitting transaction cost.

Abstract:Effective dataset management is crucial for enterprises to make informed decisions and remain competitive. However, centralized dataset management approaches often result in poor scalability, unclear governance, inaccessible data silos, and duplication of efforts. This paper proposes a distributed blockchain-based framework inspired by the data mesh architecture to address these challenges. Our proposed framework leverages blockchain's decentralized nature to enable efficient and transparent dataset sharing across enterprise business domains. By turning datasets into digital assets and business domains into peers, our framework utilizes blockchain smart contracts to allow business domains to view, request, and share datasets. In this paper, we describe the details of our framework, and we analyze it from scalability, accessibility, security, and data governance perspectives. To validate our framework, we provide a proof-of-concept implementation with a publicly available source code.

Abstract:Objectives: This paper addresses the problem of secure data storage and sharing over cloud storage infrastructures. A secure, distributed cloud storage structure incorporating the blockchain structure is proposed that supports confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Methods/Analysis: The proposed structure combines two well-known technologies: one of them is the Ethereum Blockchain and its Smart Contracts and the other is the RSA encryption and authentication scheme. The Ethereum Blockchain is used as a data structure, which ensures data availability and integrity while RSA provides sensitive data confidentiality and source authentication. Findings: As a result, users of the proposed structure can trust it and be certain that they can securely exchange information through a publicly accessible and shared cloud storage. The application can be used either through a user interface (UI) or a command-line interface (CLI). Novelty /Improvement:The novelty of this work is that the system that is proposed could be used for secure data storage on the cloud as well as for file sharing and authentication verification. Abstract:The growth of blockchain over the last ten years has been astounding: from bitcoin to over 2,000 altcoins, and from decentralized electronic payments to programmable transactions, by complicated tokens and smart contracts controlled by autonomous entities. The technological aspects of blockchain are developing at the same time as the new generation of blockchain applications are also developing. This paper considers one such sphere, to develop a decentralized solution for accessing Educational Resources which will alleviate the issues due to the single point of failure of centralized systems, democratize access to educational content and provide a facile experience for users who are not exposed to web3 technologies. This platform was developed by implementing Smart Contracts using Solidity and deploying them on the Ethereum blockchain to store educational resource metadata and files on the Inter Planetary File System (IPFS). Interfacing of blockchain and the frontend is done using the web3.js. The platform is more tenacious and fault-tolerant than systems using a centralized architecture and provides a better user experience by incorporating a search mechanism for the files uploaded to the platform. This paper proposes a decentralized platform that allows users to upload educational resources that can be accessed by others and implemented a file meta-data-based search feature to remove the need for users to remember the IPFS hash of a file.

Abstract:Blockchain technology has been successfully applied in recent years to promote the immutability, traceability, and authenticity of previously collected and stored data. However, the amount of data stored in the blockchain is usually limited for economic and technological issues. Namely, the blockchain usually stores only a fingerprint of data, such as the hash of data, while full, raw information is stored off-chain. This is generally enough to guarantee immutability and traceability, but misses to support another important property, that is, data availability. This is particularly true when a traditional, centralized database is chosen for off-chain storage. For this reason, many proposals try to properly combine blockchain with decentralized IPFS storage. However, the storage of data on IPFS could pose some privacy problems. This paper proposes a solution that properly combines blockchain, IPFS, and encryption techniques to guarantee immutability, traceability, availability, and data privacy.

Abstract:Big data has proven to be a very useful tool for companies and users, but companies with larger datasets have ended being more competitive than the others thanks to machine learning or artificial inteligence. Secure multi-party computation (SMPC) allows the smaller companies to jointly train arbitrary models on their private data while assuring privacy, and thus gives data owners the ability to perform what are currently known as federated learning algorithms. Besides, with a blockchain it is possible to coordinate and audit those computations in a decentralized way. In this document, we consider a private data marketplace as a space where researchers and data owners meet to agree the use of private data for statistics or more complex model trainings. This document presents a candidate architecure for a private data marketplace by combining SMPC and a public, general-purpose blockchain. Such a marketplace is proposed as a smart contract deployed in the blockchain, while the privacy preserving computation is held by SMPC.

Abstract:Blockchains provide environments where parties can interact transparently and securely peer-to-peer without needing a trusted third party. Parties can trust the integrity and correctness of transactions and the verifiable execution of binary code on the blockchain (smart contracts) inside the system. Including information from outside of the blockchain remains challenging. A challenge is data privacy. In a public system, shared data becomes public and, coming from a single source, often lacks credibility. A private system gives the parties control over their data and sources but trades in positive aspects as transparency. Often, not the data itself is the most critical information but the result of a computation performed on it. An example is research data certification. To keep data private but still prove data provenance, researchers can store a hash value of that data on the blockchain. This hash value is either calculated locally on private data without the chance for validation or is calculated on the blockchain, meaning that data must be published and stored on the blockchain -- a problem of the overall data amount stored on and distributed with the ledger. A system we called moving smart contracts bypasses this problem: Data remain local, but trusted nodes can access them and execute trusted smart contract code stored on the blockchain. This method avoids the system-wide distribution of research data and makes it accessible and verifiable with trusted software.

Abstract:As more and more data is collected for various reasons, the sharing of such data becomes paramount to increasing its value. Many applications ranging from smart cities to personalized health care require individuals and organizations to share data at an unprecedented scale. Data sharing is crucial in today's world, but due to privacy reasons, security concerns and regulation issues, the conditions under which the sharing occurs needs to be carefully specified. Currently, this process is done by lawyers and requires the costly signing of legal agreements. In many cases, these data sharing agreements are hard to track, manage or enforce. In this work, we propose a novel alternative for tracking, managing and especially enforcing such data sharing agreements using smart contracts and blockchain technology. We design a framework that generates smart contracts from parameters based on legal data sharing agreements. The terms in these agreements are automatically enforced by the system. Monetary punishment can be employed using secure voting by external auditors to hold the violators accountable. Our experimental evaluation shows that our proposed framework is efficient and low-cost.

Abstract:Pooling and sharing data increases and distributes its value. But since data cannot be revoked once shared, scenarios that require controlled release of data for regulatory, privacy, and legal reasons default to not sharing. Because selectively controlling what data to release is difficult, the few data-sharing consortia that exist are often built around data-sharing agreements resulting from long and tedious one-off negotiations. We introduce Data Station, a data escrow designed to enable the formation of data-sharing consortia. Data owners share data with the escrow knowing it will not be released without their consent. Data users delegate their computation to the escrow. The data escrow relies on delegated computation to execute queries without releasing the data first. Data Station leverages hardware enclaves to generate trust among participants, and exploits the centralization of data and computation to generate an audit log. We evaluate Data Station on machine learning and data-sharing applications while running on an untrusted intermediary. In addition to important qualitative advantages, we show that Data Station: i) outperforms federated learning baselines in accuracy and runtime for the machine learning application; ii) is orders of magnitude faster than alternative secure data-sharing frameworks; and iii) introduces small overhead on the critical path.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose to use the blockchain technology as a mechanism to store and share geospatial projects. Blockchain helps to improve efficiency and security. Smart contracts provide a secure, distributed and shared decentralized ledger of all assets and transactions. We will discuss a way to implement a platform on which scientists can share their studies. We propose a design methodology for the mentioned smart contracts, which enables the development of different use cases using blockchain technology. A detailed design of the smart contracts, functions and processes is presented. We will provide an outline of advantages and limitations of blockchain in general, and for the proposed platform.

Abstract:This paper presents an architecture of a Personal Information Management System, in which individuals can define the access to their personal data by means of smart contracts. These smart contracts, running on the Ethereum blockchain, implement access control lists and grant immutability, traceability and verifiability of the references to personal data, which is stored itself in a (possibly distributed) file system. A distributed authorization mechanism is devised, where trust from multiple network nodes is necessary to grant the access to the data. To this aim, two possible alternatives are described: a Secret Sharing scheme and Threshold Proxy Re-Encryption scheme. The performance of these alternatives is experimentally compared in terms of execution time. Threshold Proxy Re-Encryption appears to be faster in different scenarios, in particular when increasing message size, number of nodes and the threshold value, i.e. number of nodes needed to grant the data disclosure.

Abstract:Centralized social networks have experienced a transformative impact on our digital era communication, connection, and information-sharing information. However, it has also raised significant concerns regarding users' privacy and individual rights. In response to these concerns, this paper proposes a novel Decentralized Social Network employing Blockchain technology and Decentralized Storage Networks completed by Access Control Smart Contracts. The initial phase comprises a comprehensive literature review, delving into decentralized social networks, explaining the review methodology, and presenting the resulting findings. Building upon these findings and an analysis of previous research gaps, we propose a novel architecture for decentralized social networks. In conclusion, the principal results highlight the benefit of our decentralized social network to protect user privacy. Moreover, the users have all rights to their posted information following the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Abstract:Through the use of Ethereum, a framework is designed to simplify data exchange mechanism, improve food traceability, and improve privacy. A supply chain management system for agriculture is proposed and implemented in this paper to meet the confidentiality requirements of sensitive data and data ownership requirements. In a public blockchain environment, users can transparently verify every block generated at runtime and easily access data hosted on shared storage without authorization. To improve key distribution efficiency, we developed a proxy re-encryption scheme to manage the symmetric keys of encrypted data on shared storage. Blockchain services should improve the availability of persistent data. The interplanetary File System is used as a storage backend and to provide a file-based database that combined IPFS and a blockchain. Access control is a necessary function in the framework of multi-user data exchange. Users can manage permissions based on any data set in the Access Control List model using smart contracts that are defined by data owners. Finally, we demonstrate the system by developing a management application and integrating it into an existing food traceability system with a decoupled architecture. This demonstrates the system's ability to adapt to open data services while establishing a reliable hybrid architecture.

Abstract:In the age of Big Data, releasing protected sensitive data at a future point in time is critical for various applications. Such self-emerging data release requires the data to be protected until a prescribed data release time and be automatically released to the recipient at the release time, even if the data sender goes offline. While straight-forward centralized approaches provide a basic solution to the problem, unfortunately they are limited to a single point of trust and involve a single point of control. This paper presents decentralized techniques for supporting self-emerging data using smart contracts in Ethereum blockchain networks. We design a credible and enforceable smart contract for supporting self-emerging data release. The smart contract employs a set of Ethereum peers to jointly follow the proposed timed-release service protocol allowing the participating peers to earn the remuneration paid by the service users.We model the problem as an extensive-form game with imperfect information to protect against possible adversarial attacks including some peers destroying the private data (drop attack) or secretly releasing the private data before the release time (release-ahead attack). We demonstrate the efficacy and attack-resilience of the proposed techniques through rigorous analysis and experimental evaluation. Our implementation and experimental evaluation on the Ethereum official test network demonstrate the low monetary cost and the low time overhead associated with the proposed approach and validate its guaranteed security properties.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a study of a Federated Learning (FL) system, based on the use of decentralized architectures to ensure trust and increase reliability. The system is based on the idea that the FL collaborators upload the (ciphered) model parameters on the Inter-Planetary File System (IPFS) and interact with a dedicated smart contract to track their behavior. Thank to this smart contract, the phases of parameter updates are managed efficiently, thereby strengthening data security. We have carried out an experimental study that exploits two different methods of weight aggregation, i.e., a classic averaging scheme and a federated proximal aggregation. The results confirm the feasibility of the proposal.

Abstract:Decentralization initiatives like Solid enable data owners to control who has access to their data and to stimulate innovation by creating both application and data markets. Once data owners share their data with others, though, it is no longer possible for them to control how their data are used. To address this issue, we propose a usage control architecture to monitor compliance with usage control policies. To this end, our solution relies on blockchain and trusted execution environments. We demonstrate the potential of the architecture by describing the various workflows needed to realize a motivating use case scenario for data markets. Additionally, we discuss the merits of the approach from privacy, security, integrateability, and affordability perspectives.

An Effective Big Data Sharing Prototype Based on Ethereum Blockchain

Abstract:Because of its many advantages, big data has been extending to various domains of science, health, education, and commerce. Despite its many applications, big data sharing typically suffers from some key issues, such as user control, lack of incentives, cost, and the right of data. This paper proposes a decentralized big data sharing prototype to improve the applications and services of big data. The method makes use of Ethereum blockchain and related technologies to systematically recommend the implementation guidelines. The research provides a detailed description of the design and implementation of each sublayer of a big data system. As the method is based on blockchain technology, the key technical points are properly addressed in each of the layers. For evaluation, relevant data were collected, and functional testing was performed. A comparison was performed about the sharing frequency and blockchain consensus performance of similar platforms. The dual mining node of the proposed prototype succeeded in processing 1366 blocks and 300 messages. A comparatively satisfactory file access time in the range of 10 m to 20 s and file transmission time between 100 m and 200 s were achieved. The results obtained show that this prototype can effectively verify the feasibility of the model, the layered architecture, and the related sharing mechanism. For the functional and performance testing, practical projects were implemented and evaluated. The promising results obtained testify that the research offers a theoretical background for innovative research in the domain and specialized guidelines for practical implementation.

Abstract:Modern legal proceedings heavily rely on digital evidence as a basis for decisions in a variety of contexts, including criminal investigations and civil lawsuits. However, factors like data alteration, unauthorised access, or flaws in centralised storage can threaten the security and integrity of digital evidence. We suggest a decentralised methodology for using smart contracts to safeguard digital evidence in order to overcome these issues. The decentralised model makes use of smart contracts and blockchain technology to guarantee the integrity, transparency, and immutability of digital evidence. The approach does not require a centralised authority because it makes use of a distributed ledger, which lowers the possibility of data loss or manipulation. Multiple parties participating in the evidence lifecycle can build confidence and accountability thanks to smart contracts' programmable rules and automated enforcement mechanisms. In our study, we show the decentralised model's architecture and describe its essential elements, such as the blockchain network, smart contracts, and decentralised storage. We go over the advantages of employing this architecture, including enhanced auditability, decreased dependency on centralised institutions, and increased data security. Additionally, we discuss potential difficulties and constraints, like scalability and interoperability. We run a few simulations and experiments to test the suggested model's viability and effectiveness while comparing it to conventional centralised methods. The outcomes show that our decentralised paradigm offers improved security for digital evidence, guaranteeing its reliability, usability, and tamper-proofness. We also go through how the model is used in actual legal systems, law enforcement organisations, and digital forensics investigations.

Abstract:Blockchain is an emerging data management technology that enables people in a collaborative network to establish trusted connections with the other participants. Recently consortium blockchains have raised interest in a broader blockchain technology discussion. Instead of a fully public, autonomous network, consortium blockchain supports a network where participants can be limited to a subset of users and data access strictly controlled. Access control policies should be defined by the respective data owner and applied throughout the network without requiring a centralized data administrator. As a result, decentralized data access control (DDAC) emerges as a fundamental challenge for such systems. However, we show from a trust model for consortium collaborative networks that current consortium blockchain systems provide limited support for DDAC. Further, the distributed, replicated nature of blockchain makes it even more challenging to control data access, especially read access, compared with traditional DBMSes. We investigate possible strategies to protect data from being read by unauthorized users in consortium blockchain systems using combinations of ledger partitioning and encryption strategies. A general framework is proposed to help inexperienced users determine appropriate strategies under different application scenarios. The framework was implemented on top of Hyperledger Fabric to evaluate feasibility. Experimental results along with a real-world case study contrasted the performance of different strategies under various conditions and the practicality of the proposed framework.
