Abstract:The Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal carries unique social and cultural significance as a world cultural heritage, but with the acceleration of global urbanization, it has potentially severe environmental risks under continuous anthropogenic disturbances. Therefore, to protect the ecological and cultural values of the Grand Canal, it is necessary to assess the corresponding relationship of water quality to land use and the perception of ecosystem services that focus on cultural ecosystem services (CES). This study aims to analyze the water quality response to land use in the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, describe the land use types closely related to water quality, and propose corresponding management strategies for enhancing CES. This study investigated the impacts of land use structure and landscape pattern on water quality by calculating the correlation between land use structure and landscape pattern indices and water quality in buffer zones of different distances on both sides of the canal. The results show that green land dominates the land use structure and can effectively reduce water pollution in the canal. On the other hand, urban impervious surfaces showed a significant positive correlation with pollution contributing to low water quality. We accessed the impact of water quality on the perception of CES in the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal and proposed optimization strategies for promoting CES. Both content analysis and thematic analysis were applied to analyze the impact of the water environment quality of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal on the perception of CES. We found that the perceptions of CES along the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal are associated with the public's opinions on its cultural heritage services and artistic inspiration services. The perceptions of CES are closely related to the quality of the water environment and riparian greenness, which affect the values of cultural heritage and conservation of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal.

Abstract:The riparian zone is a unique landscape component that represents an ecological transition between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. The restoration of riparian zones has become an ecological focus in the realms of both urban development planning and watershed management. This paper applies the concept of landsenses ecology, ecological restoration principles and a range of eco-revetment models in riparian zone restoration for Xianghe Segment of China’s Grand Canal (XSCGC). Based on field trip investigation, the restoration considerations involve the current status quo of the segment’s riparian zone. In addition to the analysis of key flood control areas, the restoration considers the main functions of various landscape components. The riparian zone is divided into five typical sections: the wetland ecological conservation section in the upper reaches, the wetland ecological conservation section in the lower reaches, the riverside leisure and entertainment section in the middle reaches, the restoration and reconstruction section in the middle reaches, and the ecological agricultural section in the lower reaches. Based on the spatial form, human senses and the flood control function of the riparian zone, three typical revetment models are applied, namely original natural revetment, natural revetment, and hybrid revetment. A vegetation plan was proposed for every functional section. The aim of the present study is to provide a reference for the restoration and ecological management of the riparian zone in XSCGC.

Abstract:Rapid urbanization and drastic land-use change have led to landscape fragmentation and ecological environment deterioration in the regions along the Grand Canal. Building an ecological network is an important means to improve the connectivity of habitat patches and carry out ecological protection and restoration of territorial space, which is of great significance to ensure regional biodiversity and ecological security. In this article, we took the Huaiyang Section of the Grand Canal (Huaiyang Canal) as the study area, used the ecosystem service assessment model, morphological spatial pattern analysis (MSPA), and the landscape connectivity evaluation method to identify ecological sources, then used the minimum cumulative resistance (MCR) model and the gravity model to extract and grade ecological corridors. Based on these, the ecological network was constructed by combining the identification method of ecological nodes and ecological breakpoints. The aim of this was to provide a reference for the ecological space optimization of Huaiyang Canal and even the entire Grand Canal, the formulation of an ecological protection plan, and the implementation of territorial space ecological restoration. The results showed that the spatial distribution of the water conservation service, soil conservation service, carbon sequestration service, and biodiversity conservation service were significantly different, and the level of ecosystem services showed a trend of continuous degradation from 1990 to 2018. There were 12 ecological source patches comprehensively identified by multiple methods, with a total area of 2007.06 km2. In terms of spatial distribution, large ecological source patches were mainly distributed in the central and western areas adjacent to the Grand Canal, while small ecological source patches were scattered in the eastern and southern border regions of the study area. The total length of ecological corridors was 373.84 km, of which the number of the primary ecological corridor, secondary ecological corridor, and tertiary ecological corridor were 9, 7, and 7, respectively, and the suitable width of the ecological corridor was 200–400 m. After optimization, the proposed ecological network was composed of 3 key ecological source patches, 9 important ecological source patches, 23 terrestrial corridors, 10 aquatic corridors, and 18 ecological nodes. Twenty-nine ecological breakpoints were key areas requiring ecological restoration. The overlap rate of the integrated ecosystem service change area and land-use change area was 99%, indicating that land-use change has a significant impact on regional ecosystem services. This study is of great significance for carrying out the ecological protection and restoration of the Huaiyang Canal and adjusting local land-use policies. It also provides a typical case demonstration for identifying an ecological network and formulating ecological restoration planning for other sections of the Grand Canal and cities along the canal.

Abstract:Wetlands are critical components in the landscape of Xianghe Segment of China’s Grand Canal (XSCGC) as they have many ecological functions such as water purification, habitat and biodiversity maintenance, and provide a lot of ecosystem services for human society. However, severe deterioration and destruction of the wetlands in XSCGC not only have caused the loss of ecological functions and ecosystem services, but also have threatened ecosystem health and stability of the Grand Canal. The restoration of wetland ecosystem of the XSCGC has become an important task. Based on field investigation, this paper analyzed the main ecological problems and their causes, proposed XSCGC wetland restoration measures, including water quality improvement, vegetation and habitat restoration, river channel reconstruction, and wetland reserve establishment and management. Further we proposed a dual-core wetland ecosystem pattern for XSCGC to restore wetland ecosystem and promotion of its ecosystem service, using the principle and methodology of landsenses ecology under comprehensive consideration of the background conditions of river and wetland ecosystems of XSCGC. In this pattern, we designed two key wetlands, namely upstream wetland and downstream wetland, and proposed their reconstruction goals of ecosystem services.

Abstract:The Grand Canal possesses a unique ecosystem as one of the world cultural heritage sites. However, its ecological roles and services have been underemphasized in heritage conservation efforts, leading to environmental pollution and the degradation of its heritage value, especially in the highly urbanized southern Jiangsu section downstream. This study examines the synergy between regulating ecosystem services (RESs) and cultural ecosystem services (CESs) along the highly urbanized Wuxi section of the Grand Canal, as well as the environmental drivers influencing this relationship. The findings reveal that the synergy between CESs and RESs does not occur at the urban–rural interface but rather in areas 4-6 km away from the Central Business District (CBD). Certain drivers, such as floor area ratio (FAR) and plot ratio (PR), enhance both RES and CES within specific sections. Beyond riparian green belts, various low-density, dispersed, and well-vegetated lands could serve as significant contributors to future ecosystem service (ES) synergy. These conclusions further elucidate the spatial distribution of the heritage cultural services and other ES synergy along the Grand Canal, providing scientific support for broader improvements guiding the sustainable co-development in similar urbanized areas.

Abstract:This work aims to show that the use of different radiation patterns within the same antenna array in multiple-input multiple-output systems is beneficial in scenarios where there is uncertainty on the angle of arrival of the desired signal. We propose a completely planar design, based on patch antennas, and we deploy two different types of antennas with opposite radiation patterns (broadside and monopole-like). With this scheme, we guarantee a higher minimum of spectral efficiency values and better averaged performance than is obtained in configurations with equal radiation patterns. We also show that our strategy is the best option for any angle of arrival when the spatial diversity is limited by the number of elements and the distance between radiating elements is small, which is a common limitation in relatively small terminals.

Abstract:Urbanisation leads to dramatic changes in regional land use, which significantly affects habitat quality. Research on the coupling coordination relationship between urbanisation and habitat quality is conducive to promoting regional ecological environment improvement and urban sustainable development. In this article, we adopted the InVEST model and linear weighted sum method separately to evaluate the spatio-temporal variation characteristics of habitat quality and urbanisation level of the Grand Canal. Then, we used the coupling coordination degree model (CCDM) to investigate the interactive coercing relationship between urbanisation and habitat quality. The purpose was to provide reference for future implementation of ecological conservation work along the Grand Canal and formulation of sustainable urban development strategies. The results showed that habitat quality has continued to decline from 1990 to 2018. After becoming a world cultural heritage site, the habitat quality of the partial reaches has improved. The comprehensive urbanisation level and the four subsystem urbanisation levels, including demographic urbanisation, spatial urbanisation, economic urbanisation, and social urbanisation, of 35 cities along the Grand Canal have all steadily increased from 1990 to 2018. The social urbanisation level was obviously lower than the urbanisation levels of the other three dimensions in most cities along the Grand Canal, indicating that the quality of urbanisation seriously lags behind the speed. The coupling coordination degree (CCD) between the urbanisation level of each city and the habitat quality of the reaches in the corresponding city exhibited a fluctuating but increasing relationship. Most cities have developed in a more coordinated direction and very few cities have deteriorated. Meanwhile, the coupling coordination characteristics between urbanisation level and habitat quality have constantly changed, from the urbanisation lagged type to the urbanisation-habitat synchronised type and the habitat quality lagged type. This article has important value for implementing the ecological conservation and restoration projects of the Grand Canal, optimizing land management policies, and improving the sustainable development level of cities along the Grand Canal.

Developing Regional Ecological Networks Along the Grand Canal based on an Integrated Analysis Framework

Abstract:As a complex social ecosystem network, the area along the Grand Canal has a prominent contradiction between the demand for economic development and the protection of natural resources, which means that there is an urgent need for ecological restoration and environmental protection. Using ArcGIS, Conefor, Linkage Mapper and other software platforms, this paper developed an integrated analysis framework, through loose coupling of the attribute-function-structure index system and a series of methods such as the least cost path, circuit theory and moving window search. Based on the framework, we resolve a series of scientific issues in developing regional ecological networks, such as the selection of ecological sources, the simulation of potential ecological corridors, the assessment of the importance of ecological sources and corridors, and the identification of key ecological nodes. Moreover, an overall conservation pattern of the regional ecological network is constructed. The results show that: 1) A total of 88 important ecological sources are identified in the study area. The patches with high centrality values are mainly concentrated in the southern mountainous area and the areas with abundant rivers and lakes. 2) A total of 138 important ecological corridors are identified, and they are not evenly distributed. Extremely important corridors mostly appear between important patches, and very important corridors are mainly distributed in the central area. 3) Fifteen ecological pinch points are extracted, and they are mainly concentrated in the northern part of the study area and eastern Zhejiang Province. The barriers are mostly concentrated in the southern and northern parts of the study area. 4) Combining the demands of ecological protection and socioeconomic development, we propose an overall ecological conservation pattern of one axis, five sections, multiple cores and multiple nodes to effectively guide future ecological restoration work. These results can provide a useful reference and spatial guidance for decision makers in terms of ecological restoration and cooperation on cross-regional ecological protection along the Grand Canal.

Abstract:The Jing Hang Grand Canal of China is the longest and earliest water conservancy project in the world. Its total length is more than 1,790 kilometers, 10 times longer than the Suez Canal, 20 times longer than the Panama Canal, and it is the world's longest man-made canal. It goes through 2500 years since Chinese Spring and Autumn period as an inland river, which had played an important role in the field of canal navigation, military affairs, political affair and culture in the past 2500 years. Until now, the Jining to Hangzhou part of the canal (900 km in length) isn't only the main artery for "north to south coal transportation project", "south to north commissariat transportation project" and "south to north water transfer project", but also the only traffic and transportation network which interlaces rivers, lakes and channels together in China. The purpose of this paper expounded present water pollution situation in each section, analyzed the future trend of water environment and its challenges, urged the importance and urgency to protect the Jing Hang Grand Canal environmental. Rational proposals for the remediation of water pollution were suggested. This paper has the realistic meaning for the economic sustainable development of the Jing Hang Grand Canal region and its surrounding cities under the rapid urbanization in China.
Influence of Urban Green Space Landscape Pattern on River Water Quality in a Highly Urbanized River Network of Hangzhou City

Abstract:Optimizing urban green space landscape patterns is a key goal for improving river water quality. However, little is known about the spatial heterogeneity of the impact of urban green spatial patterns on river-water environ-ments. This study investigated the influence of urban green space patterns on the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of river water quality in the Hangzhou section of the Beijing-Hangzhou Canal through exploratory regression analysis and a combination of geographically weighted regression analysis (GWR) and spatial interpolation. The results show that (1) total nitrogen (TN) and nitrate nitrogen (NO3--N) are the leading indicators of river pollution in the study area, (2) green space configuration is more crucial for improving water quality than composition, and (3) GWR can effectively explain the impact of urban green space on river water quality. For example, landscape shape and edge indices have a great impact on ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N), TN and total phosphorus (TP); the more complex the shape and edge of the green space, the more beneficial it is for water purification. The interpretation of NO3--N is complex and mainly influenced by the largest patch index (LPI) and landscape composition. Given the limited land availability in urban area, the spatial configuration of urban green space should be optimized without additional land use to minimize the non-point source (NPS) pollution with the smallest possible green space area. The proposed approach provides a new understanding of the interaction between spatial patterns of green space and the urban water environment, and valuable information for developing green space planning policies for local sites.

Abstract:Abstract China has a long history of shipping and an extremely rich cultural heritage of the Grand Canal, traditional water conservancy is an important part of it. As a section of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, the Suzhou Grand Canal has a profound impact on the historical development of Suzhou. In the context of the revitalization and activation of the historical heritage of the Grand Canal, this paper follows the superior planning of the Suzhou High-tech Zone Planning Branch, takes the nodes along the Suzhou Grand Canal from Hengtang to Fengqiao as the base of creation to sort out the Suzhou Canal culture and traditional water conservancy’s technology. The purpose of this article is, from the perspective of the application of water conservancy facilities in the design of modern waterfront landscapes, to explore the possibility and reference of the combination of historical and cultural heritage rejuvenation with contemporary urban life, traditional wisdom reuse and contemporary landscape design.
Study on Riparian Zone and the Restoration and Rebuilding of Its Degraded Ecosystem

Abstract:Riparian zone is the area extending from the two edges of a river to where the influence of the river disappears. As an important part of wetland,riparian zone functions as a corridor,a buffer zone and a revetment in the river valley ecosystem,and has a high ecological value,in addition to its social,economical and travel values. The study on riparian zone is based on ecology,hydrology and geomorphology,involving multiple disciplines and technology. it mainly studies riparian microclimate,creatures,groundwater,and the correlation between riparian zone and the mass and energy in the surrounding environment. The methodology used in the riparian zone study includes those in landscape ecology,remote sensing and geographic information system,natural geography,environmental science and restoration ecology. Most of the riparian zone and the wetlands therein have been impacted and are no longer fully functional. Changes in riparian vegetation may be driven by natural or human forces . There are numerous examples of natural forces that cause shifts in the composition of riparian vegetation including climate,geology,wind,floods,gravity,and disease. The restoration of degraded bottomland communities to more native species compositions is a complex and challenging problem. As shown in the six-year longitudinal study on ecosystem restoration and rebuilding carried out on the bottomland in Qianshui degraded riparian zone in Qianshan County,Anhui Province,the biological diversity and stability in the degraded riparian-ecosystem increased after the restoration and rebuilding .The soil structure and nutrient conditions was improved,with the mean of clay content less than 0.002mm rising from 4.53% before the restoration to 11.71% after restoration,the soil density decreasing from 1.455g/cm3 to 1.2g/cm3,and the mean of organic matter rising from 1.25g/kg to 9.44g/kg . In addition,the restoration and rebuilding resulted in the increase of the silt deposit on the bottomland and the reinforcement of plants' anti-storm ability. This,in consequence,effectively safeguarded the riparian zone and improved the microclimate in the riparian zone. In summary,there is abundant evidence that planting are successful in restoring riparian condition. The riparian vegetation plays a significant role in relation to soil erosion and channel stability. There is no simple answer on how to restore degraded riparian ecosystems .The challenge for the restorationist is to find a way to restore more desirable conditions. The study on riparian zone is quite new in China. This paper suggests the efforts in the administration of riparian zone and in the restoration and rebuilding of degraded riparian ecosystem,so that riparian ecosystem can continuously provide people with various kinds of products in daily life,trade and industries.

Abstract:Water is the soul of the city, people in the early construction of the city is based on water, all the major cities today are river through. Rivers are closely related to the development of towns. As one of the indispensable and important substances for the survival and development of human beings, the study of water resources plays a great role in the construction of ecological civilization in cities. However, the problem of sewage discharge is still prevalent in small and medium-sized cities. Even though the country has spent a lot of money in recent years to deal with water pollution and implement measures to treat rivers whose ecological environment has been destroyed, the problem of sewage discharge cannot be solved fundamentally. Based on the research on moon lake in Chizhou, Anhui province, this paper holds that the restoration of urban small and medium-sized rivers should be based on the restoration of high-quality water resources, put forward the strategy of systematic management, ecological priority, improve the comprehensive benefits of urban small and medium-sized rivers, give full play to the role of effective supervision by residents, and build a new ecological civilization in the water areas. Based on the shortcomings and experience gained from the treatment of moon-lake sewage in Chizhou city, we will popularize the treatment of urban river wastewater from small to large, take the improvement of water environment as an important part of ecological management, find out the problems in the process of water environmental management and put forward corresponding measures to establish scientific and efficient protection mechanism.
Ecological Resilience Restoration in the Watershed of the Hancang River

Abstract:Hancang River is a river on the eastern border of Jinan City. In recent years, with the development of cities, river flow has dropped sharply, river water has been polluted, and the ecological environment of the basin has declined. Improving the water ecological environment and enhancing the resilience of the water ecology of the river basin were set as the research goals, especially coupling of hydrological and ecological processes and the recycling of sewage resources. The “patch-corridor-matrix” theory of landscape ecology, the Least-cost distance model and the Arc Hydro Tools module of the ArcGIS platform were used to describe the river system and basin boundaries, optimize the current water network and the path network of the ecosystem. A novel ecological network and water network were proposed to form the final aquatic ecosystem, which combines the hydrological process with the ecosystem, and three decentralized wastewater treatment systems were designed to reduce the wastewater directly flowing into the river. The ecosystem resilience of the basin will be enhanced.

Abstract:Urban river ecological health assessment is an effective means to manage urban rivers, and combining principles of landscape ecology can provide new help for the ecological restoration of urban rivers and improving their ecosystem service value. From the perspective of important functions of ecosystems, based on typical sample site investigations of different river sections, questionnaire surveys, and remote sensing technology, a fuzzy comprehensive evaluation model based on the factor analysis method was used to construct an indicator system that can quantitatively reflect the ecological health of urban rivers. This comprehensive evaluation index system includes five major functions: social function, habitat and corridor function, water ecological function, water landscape function, and spatial enclosure function. The study identified key areas, key rivers, key river sections, and main indicator projects for the ecological restoration of the urban river landscape corridors in Zhengzhou. The study results also showed that the urban river landscape corridors in Zhengzhou have prominent problems in social function, water ecological function, and habitat and corridor function, and 62.1% of the river sections are currently in a sub-healthy state. The flood control function, eutrophication of water body, naturalization rate of revetment, and five other indicators in the old city district are significantly lower than those in the new city district, and the old city district should be the focus of the ecological restoration of urban river corridors. From the evaluation of the ecological health status of typical river sections, the Jinshui River and Xionger River have a larger number of river sections that urgently need restoration. This study provides a reference for the ecological restoration of urban rivers in Zhengzhou, a rapidly urbanizing region, and has reference significance for the construction of water landscapes in small and medium-sized cities with low levels of urbanization.

Abstract:In order to study the corresponding impact of aquatic ecological infrastructure on the process of urbanization, and avoid the current problems of unreasonable resource development, land waste, and deterioration of the ecological environment, a research on the construction of aquatic ecological infrastructure in the process of urbanization is proposed. Based on the geographic information system technology environment, simulate and analyze the regional water ecological process, construct the landscape security pattern of water ecological management, plan and construct the type, scale, layout and structure of water ecological infrastructure, form a complete network system of water ecological infrastructure, and get the key areas of water ecological infrastructure planning. According to the principle of index system construction, the weight coefficients are determined, the comprehensive evaluation model is constructed, and the principal component analysis method is used to comprehensively evaluate the measurement of the level of aquatic ecological infrastructure construction, and to determine the spatial location, composition and composition of the BMPs aquatic ecological infrastructure in key water ecological management areas. It also guides the optimization and adjustment of urban planning and urban development and construction to realize sustainable water ecological management of the city. The results show that the planning and construction of water ecological infrastructure play a positive role in the process of urbanization, improve the urban green coverage and improve the urban ecological environment.

Impact of spatial variations in water quality and hydrological factors on the food-web structure in urban aquatic environments

Abstract:Global aquatic ecosystems are essential to human existence and have deteriorated seriously in recent years. Understanding the influence mechanism of habitat variation on the structure of the food-web allows the effective recovery of the health of degraded ecosystems. Whereas most previous studies focused on the selection of driving habitat factors, the impact of habitat variation on the food-web structure was rarely studied, resulting in the low success rate of ecosystem restoration projects globally. This paper presents a framework for exploring the effects of spatial variations in water quality and hydrological habitat factors on the food-web structure in city waters. Indices for the evaluation of the food-web structure are first determined by integrating model-parameter extraction via literature refinement. The key water quality and hydrological factors are then determined by coupling canonical correspondence analysis with partial least squares regression. Their spatial variation is investigated using spatial autocorrelation. Finally, fuzzy clustering is applied to analyze the influence of the spatial variations in water quality and hydrological factors on the food-web structure. The results obtained in Ji'nan, the pilot city of water ecological civilization in China, show that the Shannon diversity index, connectance index, omnivory index, and the ratio of total primary production to the total respiration are important indicators of food-web structural change. They show that the driving factors affecting the aquatic food-web structure in Ji'nan are hydrological factors (e.g., river width, water depth, and stream flow), physical aspects of water quality (e.g., air temperature, water temperature, electrical conductivity, and transparency), and chemical aspects (e.g., potassium, dissolved oxygen, calcium, and total hardness). They also show that the stability of the food-web is more prone to spatial variations in water quality than in hydrological factors. Higher electrical conductivity, potassium, total hardness, and air temperature lead to deteriorated food-web structures, whereas better transparency improves structure and stability. We found that water and air temperature are the most important factors in the spatial variation of the food-web structure in the study area, followed by total hardness. Transparency is the least important factor. Large disparities and varied spatial distributions exist in the driving effects of water quality and hydrological factors across regions attributable to differences in geographical environments, water salinity (fresh vs. sea water), and environmental factors (e.g., water pollution). The above methods and results serve as a theoretical and scientific basis for a high success rate of aquatic ecosystem restoration projects in the study area and other cities worldwide.

Abstract:Wetland loss threatens global biodiversity. Peri-urban wetlands face acute pressures from urban expansion. Investigate biodiversity and land-cover changes in two wetlands undergoing suburbanisation near Hangzhou, China. Seasonal field surveys of birds, fish and amphibians, coupled with remote-sensing analysis of land-cover changes from 2009 to 2020. Suburban wetlands exhibited unique degradation patterns, including reduced species diversity, simplified community structures and proliferation of invasive species, with 91 bird species being recorded, dominated by common residents, 25 still-water fish species with few carnivores and migratory species, and 5 ubiquitous amphibian species detected. Species richness was lower than in nearby conserved wetlands. From 2009 to 2020, 6–7% of the wetlands were lost to urban expansion and converted to artificial vegetation or infrastructure. Ecological degradation is driven by rapid urbanisation, with habitats being fragmented by roads and converted to artificial land covers. Water pollution from insufficient treatment and abandoned aquaculture further impairs habitats. Innovative integrated-management framework was proposed for wetlands biodiversity restoration in suburban area. Key strategies include (1) modernising traditional circular economies to sustain wise use, (2) wildlife-friendly infrastructure design, (3) targeted invasive species control, and (4) adaptive co-management informed by ongoing monitoring. This socio-ecological systems approach aims to harmonise biodiversity conservation, cultural heritage and sustainable development in threatened suburban wetlands.

Abstract:The ecological management of urban river water environments holds significant importance for sustaining city development and safeguarding ecological balance. Human activities have led to severe pollution in urban rivers, diminishing their self-healing capacity and disrupting their essential functions. This article highlights the significance of ecological management, principles guiding such management, challenges posed by water shortage and pollution in urban rivers, and strategies to address these issues. Respect for nature, restoration of ecosystem functions, and comprehensive governance emerge as key principles for effective ecological management. Water scarcity and pollution issues are explored, including the impact of urbanization and industrialization on water quality. The article suggests strategies such as thoughtful channel design, sewage recycling projects, and scientifically managed revetment works to restore and maintain healthy urban river ecosystems.
