Bibliometric Research in Neurosurgery: A Review of the 50 Most Cited Bibliometric Publications in the Neurosurgical Literature

Abstract:Bibliometry is a popular research method that is used to explore and analyze large volumes of data in an effort to highlight trends, patterns, and impacts within a specific field. This review aimed at highlighting the characteristics and citation patterns of the high-impact bibliometric research studies that were published in the neurosurgical literature. Using PubMed and Google Scholar, the 50 (52 due to identical citation numbers for the lowest three articles) most cited bibliometric research publications were identified and reviewed. Information relating to the articles' publication and bibliometric features were retrieved. The articles' citation numbers were collected. The median article age and journal impact factor (IF) were eight years and 2.76, respectively. The majority of studies were published in World Neurosurgery and the Journal of Neurosurgery, which were the publishing journals for 18 (35%) and 12 (23%) articles, respectively. Twenty-six (50%) articles were first authored by researchers from the United States of America (USA). The highest bibliometric component was science mapping, which was the theme in 30 (58%) articles. The majority of the bibliometric focus was clinical topics/fields (22 (42%) articles) and neurosurgeons/departments (21 (40%) articles). The most popular bibliometric metric was the h-index (±variants), which was employed in 22 (42%) articles. The median size of analyzed data was 188, and the most frequently utilized databases were Scopus (22 (42%) articles) and Web of Science (21 (40%) articles). The median (range) citation numbers were 52 (29-238). The citation analysis showed significantly higher citation numbers for older articles (aged ≥ 8 years) and studies published in the Journal of Neurosurgery. The citation rates were not influenced by the size of the data, the searched databases, or the bibliometric features. In conclusion, the most cited bibliometric research publications in the neurosurgical literature were predominantly descriptive analyses of clinical topics/fields and performance analyses of neurosurgeons/departments. Their citation numbers were relatively modest and were positively influenced by the publication's age and by a specific publishing journal but not by the bibliometric features of the study. Bibliometric research provides useful analytic tools that can be utilized in review studies and other practical purposes such as scholarly practices and policy decision-making.

Abstract:Reagent strip test was carried out to detect haematuria in urinary schistosomiasis infection in ten schools (1114 children) in the middle Awash Valley, Ethiopia. In five schools (557 children), were compared with results of urine filtration technique conducted simultaneously. The prevalence of infection by reagent sticks and urine filtration was 19.5% and 3.1%, respectively. Haematuria, detected by the reagent strip, was highly related with the results of urine filtration at the 2+ limit rather than the 1+ limit. However, the intensity of infection of all children was highly associated with prevalence rate at both haematuria limits. The possible use of reagent strips in Ethiopia to monitor morbidity (haematuria) due to S. haematobium infection is discussed.
A bibliometric analysis of COVID-19 publications in neurology by using the visual mapping method

Abstract:Background: The characteristic symptom of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is respiratory distress, but neurological symptoms are the most frequent extra-pulmonary symptoms. This study aims to explore the current status and hot topics of neurology-related research on COVID-19 using bibliometric analysis. Methods: Publications regarding neurology and COVID-19 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) on March 28 2022. The Advanced search was conducted using "TS = ('COVID 19' or 'Novel Coronavirus 2019' or 'Coronavirus disease 2019' or '2019-nCOV' or 'SARS-CoV-2' or 'coronavirus-2') and TS = ('neurology'or 'neurological' or 'nervous system' or 'neurodegenerative disease' or 'brain' or 'cerebra' or 'nerve')". Microsoft Excel 2010 and VOSviewer were used to characterize the largest contributors, including the authors, journals, institutions, and countries. The hot topics and knowledge network were analyzed by CiteSpace and VOSviewer. Results: A total of 5,329 publications between 2020 and 2022 were retrieved. The United States, Italy, and the United Kingdom were three key contributors to this field. Harvard Medical School, the Tehran University of Medical Sciences, and the UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology were the major institutions with the largest publications. Josef Finsterer from the University of São Paulo (Austria) was the most prolific author. Tom Solomon from the University of Liverpool (UK) was the most cited author. Neurological Sciences and Frontiers in Neurology were the first two most productive journals, while Journal of Neurology held the first in terms of total citations and citations per publication. Cerebrovascular diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, encephalitis and encephalopathy, neuroimmune complications, neurological presentation in children, long COVID and mental health, and telemedicine were the central topics regarding the neurology-related research on COVID-19. Conclusion: Neurology-related research on COVID-19 has attracted considerable attention worldwide. Research topics shifted from "morality, autopsy, and telemedicine" in 2020 to various COVID-19-related neurological symptoms in 2021, such as "stroke," "Alzheimer's disease," "Parkinson's disease," "Guillain–Barre syndrome," "multiple sclerosis," "seizures in children," and "long COVID." "Applications of telemedicine in neurology during COVID-19 pandemic," "COVID-19-related neurological complications and mechanism," and "long COVID" require further study.

Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic led to stringent guidelines to restrict the conduct of non-emergent surgical procedures. Consequently, neurosurgery departments experienced a decline in case volumes and greater educational time being spent on virtual research projects. In our report, we reveal how neurosurgical research has changed during the pandemic compared to the pre-pandemic phase. The WebOfScience database was searched for neurosurgical articles published between 2012–2019 (pre-pandemic) and 2020–2022 (pandemic). From this data, the keywords, terms, and countries were analyzed using networks formed by the VOS Viewer software. In addition, the analysis was repeated for neurosurgical articles specific to COVID-19. Network analyses of terms and keywords revealed an increased popularity of virtual research projects, including case reports, meta-analyses, reviews, surveys, and database studies. Additionally, there was increased interest in research pertaining to neurosurgical education during the post-pandemic era, including topics regarding virtual training modalities, mental health, and telemedicine. Our bibliometrics analysis suggests that the impact of COVID-19 restrictions on hospital systems affected neurosurgical training programs. Future investigations should explore the effects of the trainee experience during the COVID-19 pandemic on the outlook for neurosurgical education.

Global research hotspots and trends in the field of spine surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic: A bibliometric and visual analysis

Abstract:Background The Coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) significantly affected the healthcare and research systems, including spine surgery, throughout the world. A bibliometric analysis allows graphical visualization of the development of an academic field and its frontiers. Since research concerning spine surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic is being constantly upgraded, we conducted a bibliometric analysis of this literature to investigate the current status, research hotspots, and trends in this field. Methods We searched the Web of Science database for literature published (from December 1, 2019, to March 24, 2022) using the terms “COVID-19” OR “2019-nCoV” OR “SARS-CoV-2” AND “spine surgery” OR “spinal surgery” OR “discectomy” OR “decompression” OR “laminectomy” OR “interbody fusion” OR “pedicle screws.” Detailed bibliometric and visual analysis of the number of publications, geographical distribution, institutions, journals, authors, and keywords was done using CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and R-Bibliometrix. Results Of the initially screened 173 articles, we included 84 relevant articles—62 original articles, 10 editorial materials, 8 reviews, and 4 others. The United States, China, Egypt, and Argentina were most actively publishing in the field of spine surgery and COVID-19. The AOSpine International community contributed 7 articles (24 citations). The Hospital for Special Surgery (13.1%) and Johns Hopkins University (13.1%) were institutions with the most publications. Using the Law of Bradford, we found that World Neurosurgery, Global Spine Journal, and European Spine Journal are the core journals in this field, with P . K. Louie being the most influential author. “Elective surgery,” “intensive care,” “telehealth,” “patient satisfaction,” and “follow-up” had the strongest citation bursts. Conclusions During the COVID-19 pandemic, spine surgeons were more concerned with surgical timing, care, treatment, and patient’s quality of life. Accordingly, research hotspots in spine surgery during the pandemic shifted from “early healthcare” to “virus management” and “experience and education.”

Abstract:A 58-year-old man who had had three laparotomies for gastric surgery, developed a painful mass in the abdominal wall scar. Radiology confirmed bone formation in the scar. The bone was excised and the wound repaired. Histology confirmed metaplastic mature bone formation. This case draws the attention to the clinical condition of bone formation in midline scars. Clinically, it should be differentiated from scar recurrence following surgery for abdominal malignancy.

Abstract:This paper analyzed the various constraints of course scheduling according to the teaching practice of Xiamen University. Combining practice with the theory of simulated annealing algorithm, we applied the method of RBAC (Role Based Access Control) to subdivide the role of course scheduling, designed and implemented the course scheduling subsystem of educational administration system. Practice has proved that the system can effectively reduce the course scheduling conflict, to achieve a balanced use of teaching resources, and completed the task of classification management remarkably.

Abstract:Background: The coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has had a dramatic impact on global health, with orthopedics among the most affected specialties. An increasing number of COVID-19-related orthopedic studies have been published. The purpose of this study was to analyze the orthopedic literature published during the COVID-19 pandemic to guide future research. Methods: The Scopus database was searched for relevant literature published between 2020 and 2022. The keywords used in the retrieval process were ("COVID-19" OR "Coronavirus" OR "2019-nCoV" OR "SARS-CoV-2" OR "Betacoronavirus" OR "novel coronavirus 2019" OR "novel coronavirus" OR "coronavirus-19" OR "COVID 19" OR "nCOV" OR "COVID-2019" OR "COVID 2019") and ("orthopedic" OR "orthopedics" OR "orthopedic" OR "orthopedical" OR "orthopedical" OR "orthopedics"). Spreadsheet software (Excel, Microsoft Corp., Redmond, WA) was used to analyze the top 10 cited authors, countries, journals, and articles. The top 5 publication types were also analyzed. VOSviewer (Center for Science and Technology Studies, Leiden, Netherlands) was used to network and visualize the literature. Results: A total of 1619 publications relevant to COVID-19 and orthopedics were reviewed. Among these publications, the most active country, author, and publication type included the United States, Vaishya R, and original articles, respectively. The most frequently used keywords were human, coronavirus disease-2019, pandemic, and orthopedics. The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery American Volume was the most cited journal, whereas the greatest number of articles was published in the Journal of Clinical Orthopedics and Trauma. Conclusions: This study provides a perspective on the development of orthopedic publications during the COVID-19 pandemic and evidence for researchers worldwide to strengthen global cooperation in fighting the epidemic.

Abstract:Objectives: Bibliometric analysis scrutinizes documents quantitatively using key parameters such as number of publications, subject area, citation metrics and collaborative networks. This study was conducted to answer these research questions: 1) What is the current publication trend globally on COVID-19?; 2) Which publications are in the top 100 most cited articles?; 3) Who are the most influential authors on COVID-19?; and 4) Which themes of COVID-19 are the most popular among scholars.Methods: A bibliometric search was conducted in Scopus database using keywords such as `COVID- 19’ or ‘COVID19’ or ‘COVID’ or ‘SARS-CoV-2’ in the article title. Document type was limited to original articles, review articles, conference papers and book chapters. A total of 139,888 documents were retrieved. The data is further analysed using Harzing’s Publish or Perish and VOSviewer to obtain the relevant citation metrics as well as visualization of collaborating networks.Results: Out of the total documents, 39% were published in the ‘Medicine’ subject area. Other subject areas include ‘Social Sciences’ (8.6%), ‘Computer Science’ (4%), ‘Engineering’ (3.1%) and ‘Psychology’ (2.8%). The most productive institution is Harvard Medical School which produced a total of 1921 documents. The top three leading countries are the United States, China and the United Kingdom, while the most productive author is Mahase, E. with 218 documents. The most influential publication, which had 11,279 citations, was titled `Clinical course and risk factors for mortality of adult inpatients with COVID-19 in Wuhan, China: a retrospective cohort study” published in The Lancet, 2020. The 100 top-cited publications have citations ranging from 802 – 11279. These top publications were published in 52 source titles, with the majority of the top-cited articles being published in The Lancet.Conclusion: Publications in COVID-19 are increasing exponentially and are mainly dominated by the United States. Isolated Medial Rectus Muscle Rupture after a Traffic Accident

Abstract:A 30-year-old male suffered an orbital trauma due to a traffic accident. At the Emergency Unit, the patient presented with avulsion of the upper left eyelid in the medial canthus, wounds in the lower eyelid and the inferior canaliculus, conjunctival laceration, proptosis and palpebral hematomas. The patient reported persistent diplopia. During the examination, exotropia and total absence of adduction were observed. Computerized tomography (CT) revealed a discontinuity at the left medial rectus. No orbital fractures were identifiable. The medial rectus was still attached to its anatomic insertion at the globe. The discontinuity was suggestive of laceration or rupture of this muscle at approximately 10–12 mm from its insertion. Surgical exploration revealed total rupture of the medial rectus at approximately 12 mm from its insertion. The posterior edge of the damaged muscle was found and sutured to its anterior edge with 6-0 polyglactin. The following day, the eyes were completely straight and the patient did not mention any signs of diplopia. Botulinum toxin injection into the ipsilateral lateral rectus was not necessary. After six months of follow-up, the patient still reported no diplopia. When muscular laceration is suspected after an orbital trauma, early CT is recommended. The only procedures that assure a significant recovery of the normal function of the eye are early muscle repair and avoidance, if possible, of transposition surgery.

Abstract:Objective: Description of the clinical, biochemical and genetic features of a Polish patient with familial glucocorticoid deficiency. Methods: Detailed clinical investigation, hormonal analysis and sequencing of the coding region of the melanocortin 2 receptor (MC2R) gene in this patient. Results: We report on a 3-month-old boy with familial glucocorticoid deficiency who presented at the age of 3 months with skin hyperpigmentation, muscle weakness, mild jaundice and constipation. Hormonal analyses revealed high ACTH and TSH serum concentrations, low serum cortisol concentration along with normal blood electrolytes. On hydrocortisone supplementation, the disease symptoms disappeared and the child recovered completely. His physical and mental development progresses normally. Genetic analysis disclosed a novel compound heterozygous MC2R mutation p.Leu46fs and p.Val49Met. Conclusion: The heterozygous p.Leu46fs mutation adds to the small number of MC2R nonsense mutations and is the first frameshift mutation within the first transmembrane domain of the receptor. According to molecular modeling the Val49Met mutation results in a structural change of the first transmembrane domain and in a potential novel interaction of the transmembrane domains I and VII.

Abstract:Eubacterial plasmids and chromosomes encode multiple killer genes belonging to the hok gene family. The plasmid-encoded killer genes mediate plasmid stabilization by killing plasmid-free cells. This review describes the genetics, molecular biology, and evolution of the hok gene family. The complicated antisense RNA-regulated control-loop that regulates posttranscriptional and postsegregational activation of killer mRNA translation in plasmid-free cells is described in detail. Nucleotide covariations in the mRNAs reveal metastable stem-loop structures that are formed at the mRNA 5' ends in the nascent transcripts. The metastable structures prevent translation and antisense RNA binding during transcription. Coupled nucleotide covariations provide evidence for a phylogenetically conserved mRNA folding pathway that involves sequential dynamic RNA rearrangements. Our analyses have elucidated an intricate mechanism by which translation of an antisense RNA-regulated mRNA can be conditionally activated. The complex phylogenetic relationships of the plasmid- and chromosome-encoded systems are also presented and discussed.
The 100 Top-Cited Articles on Robotic Neurosurgery: A Bibliometric Analysis

Abstract:Background: Robotic neurosurgery is a rapidly advancing field with numerous applications in various subspecialties, including spine, functional, skull base, and cerebrovascular. This study aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the most-cited articles on robotic neurosurgery. Methods: The Web of Science database was used to collect data, and bibliometric analysis was performed using VOSviewer and RStudio. Network analysis techniques such as co-occurrence, coauthorship, bibliographic coupling, and thematic mapping analyses were used to identify the top 100 most cited articles, major contributors, emerging trends, and noteworthy themes in the field. Results: The results showed that there has been a steady increase in the number of publications on robotic neurosurgery since 1991, with an exponential growth in the number of citations. The United States was the most common country of origin for articles, followed by Canada. The most productive authors in this field were Burton S.A. and Gerszten P.C., while the University of Pittsburgh was the most productive institution, and Neurosurgery was the most productive journal. Themes such as robotics, back pain, and prostate cancer, as well as trends in developing new technologies and improving the precision of surgical procedures, were identified. Conclusions: This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the most-cited articles on robotic neurosurgery. The broad range of topics and techniques explored emphasize the importance of continued innovation and investigation. Ultimately, the study's findings provide valuable guidance for future research and contribute to advancing our understanding of this critical area of study.
COVID-19 and Neurosurgery Consultation Call Volume at a Single Large Tertiary Center With a Propensity-Adjusted Analysis

Abstract:Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly affected patient care across specialties. Ramifications for neurosurgery include substantial disruptions to surgical training and changes in nonurgent patient presentations to the emergency department. This study quantifies the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the number of emergency department patients who were referred to the neurosurgery department for further consultation and treatment and identifies and describes trends in the characteristics of these visits. Methods: A retrospective review was performed of neurosurgical consultations at a single high-volume institution for 28 call-day periods before and after the official announcement of the pandemic. Primary outcomes included consultations per call-day, patient presentation category, and patient admission. Results: The neurosurgical service was consulted regarding 629 patients (367 male patients) during the study period, with 471 (75%) and 158 (25%) patients presenting before and after the announcement of the COVID-19 pandemic, respectively. The mean number of neurosurgical consultations per call-day was significantly lower in the COVID-19 period (5.6 consultations) compared with the pre-COVID-19 period (16.8 consultations) (P < 0.001). After adjusting for patient demographics, the rate of presentation for general nonurgent concerns, such as back pain, headaches, and other general weaknesses, significantly decreased (odds ratio [95% confidence interval], 0.60 [0.47-0.77], P < 0.001). Conclusions: Neurosurgical consultations significantly decreased after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, with a substantially lower overall number of consultations necessitating operative interventions. Furthermore, the relative number of patients with nonemergent neurological conditions significantly decreased during the pandemic.

Abstract:PURPOSE: Coronavirus disease pandemic has impacted global healthcare tremendously and ophthalmology is one of the high-hit specialties. An increasing number of research items are upcoming with COVID-19-related research in ophthalmology and this report aims at performing a scientometric analysis of all the available research pertaining to COVID-19 and ophthalmology.METHODS: A Web of Science (https://webofknowledge.com) query TS = ("novel coronavirus 2019" OR "coronavirus 2019" OR "COVID 2019" OR "COVID 19" OR "nCOV" OR "SARS-CoV-2" OR "COVID-19") AND WC = ("Ophthalmology") was deployed on February 22, 2021, to retrieve all research items on the topics of interest. R software (v4.0.1) with Bibliometrix library was deployed to visualize metrics to quantify geographical distribution, source metrics, author metrics, document metrics, and keyword metrics.RESULTS: A total of 616 research items appeared in our search results that were drafted by 2398 authors and published in 63 sources. India, USA, UK, and China had the greatest number of research items among others. Indian Journal of Ophthalmology, Eye, and Graefe's Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology were sources with greatest number of research items. Documents per author were 0.257 and authors per document were 3.89. The collaboration index was noted to be 4.28.CONCLUSION: Our scientometric analysis presents descriptive quantitative metrics for COVID-related research in the field of ophthalmology and provides evidence for the increased global collaboration that global researchers have fostered to fight this pandemic.

Impact of a Pandemic on Surgical Neuro-Oncology—maintaining Functionality in the Early Phase of Crisis

Abstract:Background The Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has extraordinarily impacted global healthcare. Neuro-oncological surgery units have peculiar features that make them highly relevant in the strategic reaction to the pandemic. In this Chinese Society of Neuro-Oncology (CSNO) initiated survey, we appraise the changes implemented in neuro-oncological surgery hospitals across different Asian countries and provide expert recommendations for responses at different stages of the pandemic. Methods We performed a 42-question survey of the early experience of neuro-oncological surgery practice in hospitals across different Asian countries on April 1, 2020, with responses closed on April 18, 2020. Results 144 hospitals completed the questionnaire. Most were in WHO post-peak phase of the pandemic and reported a median reduction in neuro-oncological surgery volume of 25–50%. Most (67.4%) resumed elective surgery in only COVID-19 negative patients;11.1% performed only emergency cases irrespective of COVID-19 status;2.1% suspended all surgical activity. Ninety-one (63.2%) relocated personnel from neurosurgery to other departments. Fifty-two (36.1%) hospitals suspended post-operative adjuvant therapy and 94 (65.2%) instituted different measures to administer post-operative adjuvant therapy. Majority (59.0%) of the hospitals suspended research activity. Most (70%) respondents anticipate that current neurosurgery restrictions will continue to remain for > 1 month. Conclusions Majority of the respondents to our survey reported reduced neuro-oncological surgery activity, policy modification, personnel reallocation, and curtailment of educational/research activities in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The persistent widespread interruption of surgical neuro-oncology in even post-peak phases of the pandemic raises serious concerns about the long-term impact of the pandemic on neuro-oncological patients and highlights the essence of timely measures for pandemic preparedness, patient triage, and workforce protection.
The relationship between tumor volume and the number of positive cores in men undergoing multisite extended biopsy: implication for expectant management.

Abstract:PURPOSE We assessed the relationship between the number of positive cores obtained at extended biopsy and tumor volume in radical prostatectomy specimens as a tool for predicting the biological significance of prostate cancer from biopsy data. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study group included 207 men who were treated with radical prostatectomy without neoadjuvant therapy at our cancer center. All patients were diagnosed by systematic extended biopsy (10 or 11 cores) performed between 1997 and 2003. The variables analyzed were patient age, prostate specific antigen, clinical stage, biopsy Gleason score, maximum tumor length in a core, greatest percent of tumor in a core, total tumor length, total percent of tumor in all cores, positive core location, initial or repeat biopsy and prostate volume in subgroups based on the number of positive cores, that is group 1-1, group 2-2 and group 3-3 or more cores. Bivariate correlation analysis and multiple logistic regression analysis were used to determine the predictors of insignificant cancer. RESULTS The number of positive cores was significantly related to total tumor volume (r = 0.433, p <0.001). Insignificant prostate cancer (volume less than 0.5 cc and Gleason score 6 or less) was found in 21.7% of patients (45 of 207). The incidence of insignificant cancer was 42.5% (31 of 73 patients) in group 1, 16.4% (10 of 61) in group 2 and 5.5% (4 of 73) in group 3. There was a significant difference in the incidence of insignificant cancer among the subgroups (group 1 vs 2 p <0.001, group 1 vs 3 p <0.0001 and group 2 vs 3 p <0.05). The best model for predicting insignificant cancer in group 1 was the combination of tumor length less than 2 mm, Gleason score 3 + 4 or less and prostate volume greater than 50 cc with 83.9% sensitivity (26 of 31 patients) and 61.9% specificity (26 of 42). CONCLUSIONS The probability of insignificant cancer was directly related to the number of positive cores. Tumor length in a core, Gleason score and prostate volume significantly enhanced the prediction model for insignificant cancer in men with 1 positive core who underwent extended biopsy.
