Abstract:Maintaining security and privacy in real-world enterprise networks is becoming more and more challenging. Cyber actors are increasingly employing previously unreported and state-of-the-art techniques to break into corporate networks. To develop novel and effective methods to thwart these sophisticated cyberattacks, we need datasets that reflect real-world enterprise scenarios to a high degree of accuracy. However, precious few such datasets are publicly available. Researchers still predominantly use the decade-old KDD datasets, however, studies showed that these datasets do not adequately reflect modern attacks like Advanced Persistent Threats(APT). In this work, we analyze the usefulness of the recently introduced DARPA Operationally Transparent Cyber (OpTC) dataset in this regard. We describe the content of the dataset in detail and present a qualitative analysis. We show that the OpTC dataset is an excellent candidate for advanced cyber threat detection research while also highlighting its limitations. Additionally, we propose several research directions where this dataset can be useful.

Abstract:In this work, we propose a testbed environment to capture the attack strategies of an adversary carrying out a cyber-attack on an enterprise network. The testbed contains nodes with known security vulnerabilities which can be exploited by hackers. Participants can be invited to play the role of a hacker (e.g., black-hat, hacktivist) and attack the testbed. The testbed is designed such that there are multiple attack pathways available to hackers. We describe the working of the testbed components and discuss its implementation on a VMware ESXi server. Finally, we subject our testbed implementation to a few well-known cyber-attack strategies, collect data during the process and present our analysis of the data.

Abstract:Analysis of cyber relevant data has become an area of increasing focus. As larger percentages of businesses and governments begin to understand the implications of cyberattacks, the impetus for better cybersecurity solutions has increased. Unfortunately, current cybersecurity datasets either offer no ground truth or do so with anonymized data. The former leads to a quandary when verifying results and the latter can remove valuable information. Additionally, most existing datasets are large enough to make them unwieldy during prototype development. In this paper we have developed the PicoDomain dataset, a compact high-fidelity collection of Zeek logs from a realistic intrusion using relevant Tools, Techniques, and Procedures. While simulated on a small-scale network, this dataset consists of traffic typical of an enterprise network, which can be utilized for rapid validation and iterative development of analytics platforms. We have validated this dataset using traditional statistical analysis and off-the-shelf Machine Learning techniques.

Abstract:The novel dataset called Linux-APT Dataset 2024 captures Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) attacks along with other latest and sophisticated payloads. Existing datasets lacks latest attacker's techniques and procedures, APTs tactics and configuration to capture maximum Linux log sources to observe the working and behaviour of an APT in a detailed manner. The environment which supported us in capturing the logs is composed of Linux machines and a centralized logging system configured appropriately to captures and detect all possible events and logs for an APT and other complex intrusion. Unlike Microsoft Windows, Linux logging system are investigated enough and usually systems relies on limited log sources but for an APT, all possible log sources should be evaluated and added to completely analyse the behaviour, trajectory, and operation of an APT. To keep the dataset up to date and realistic, recent payloads and APTs are emulated in the environment. A well-known cyber-security framework 'MITRE ATT&CK' is utilised to map the behaviour and operation in a generalized manner after capturing the events and logs. This dataset can be used for training and conducting a variety of experiments to build as well as design the solutions for detecting most recent intrusions and APT attacks for Linux System.

Abstract:A Cyber Physical System (CPS) consists of cyber components for computation and communication, and physical components such as sensors and actuators for process control. These components are networked and interact in a feedback loop. CPS are found in critical infrastructure such as water distribution, power grid, and mass transportation. Often these systems are vulnerable to attacks as the cyber components such as Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition workstations, Human Machine Interface and Programmable Logic Controllers are potential targets for attackers. In this work, we report a study to investigate the impact of cyber attacks on a water distribution (WADI) system. Attacks were designed to meet attacker objectives and launched on WADI using a specially designed tool. This tool enables the launch of single and multi-point attacks where the latter are designed to specifically hide one or more attacks. The outcome of the experiments led to a better understanding of attack propagation and behavior of WADI in response to the attacks as well as to the design of an attack detection mechanism for water distribution system.

Abstract:In the wake of the expanding digital realm, the imperative for robust cybersecurity measures has burgeoned significantly. This extensive investigation digs into the complicated realm of cybersecurity datasets, with the goal of improving our understanding and implementation of these critical tools. This study's comprehensive evaluation of 37 distinct datasets shows a complicated world in which no one dataset stands out as totally suitable for all uses. A precise balance must be struck between crucial dataset qualities such as diversity, authenticity, and usefulness. Using a complete assessment technique, this paper illuminates the challenges and possibilities that developers and researchers face in the field of cybersecurity datasets. Although some databases accurately identify certain forms of cyberattacks, their coverage may not include the whole range of cyber threats. On the other hand, datasets with a strong emphasis on accurate portrayal may forgo comprehensiveness or practical use. This intricacy is heightened by the dynamic and sophisticated nature of cyber threats, emphasizing the delicate balance required between accuracy and practicality. The study emphasizes the necessity of selecting datasets strategically and contextually for cybersecurity studies, with the goal of matching research objectives with the most appropriate dataset selections. Furthermore, it emphasizes the need of continual cooperation and innovation within the cybersecurity community in developing datasets that accurately represent the ever-changing nature of cyber threats. After analyzing 37 cybersecurity datasets, it is obvious that no one dataset can meet all of the field's unique demands, demonstrating the need of a flexible, adaptable, and developing dataset for intrusion detection systems (IDS). This inquiry offers a critical assessment of dataset characteristics and their related issues, providing essential insights for academics, professionals, and dataset creators, enabling the construction of a more resilient and adaptable cybersecurity infrastructure.

Abstract:Represented paper is currently topical, because of year on year increasing quantity and diversity of attacks on computer networks that causes significant losses for companies. This work provides abilities of such problems solving as: existing methods of location of anomalies and current hazards at networks, statistical methods consideration, as effective methods of anomaly detection and experimental discovery of choosed method effectiveness. The method of network traffic capture and analysis during the network segment passive monitoring is considered in this work. Also, the processing way of numerous network traffic indexes for further network information safety level evaluation is proposed. Represented methods and concepts usage allows increasing of network segment reliability at the expense of operative network anomalies capturing, that could testify about possible hazards and such information is very useful for the network administrator. To get a proof of the method effectiveness, several network attacks, whose data is storing in specialised DARPA dataset, were chosen. Relevant parameters for every attack type were calculated. In such a way, start and termination time of the attack could be obtained by this method with insignificant error for some methods.

Abstract:Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack is a menace to network security that aims at exhausting the target networks with malicious traffic. Although many statistical methods have been designed for DDoS attack detection, designing a real-time detector with low computational overhead is still one of the main concerns. On the other hand, the evaluation of new detection algorithms and techniques heavily relies on the existence of well-designed datasets. In this paper, first, we review the existing datasets comprehensively and propose a new taxonomy for DDoS attacks. Secondly, we generate a new dataset, namely CICDDoS2019, which remedies all current shortcomings. Thirdly, using the generated dataset, we propose a new detection and family classificaiton approach based on a set of network flow features. Finally, we provide the most important feature sets to detect different types of DDoS attacks with their corresponding weights.

Abstract:Power grids worldwide are increasingly victims of cyberattacks, where attackers can cause immense damage to critical infrastructure. The growing digitalization and networking in power grids combined with insufficient protection against cyberattacks further exacerbate this trend. Hence, security engineers and researchers must counter these new risks by continuously improving security measures. Data sets of real network traffic during cyberattacks play a decisive role in analyzing and understanding such attacks. Therefore, this paper presents PowerDuck, a publicly available security data set containing network traces of GOOSE communication in a physical substation testbed. The data set includes recordings of various scenarios with and without the presence of attacks. Furthermore, all network packets originating from the attacker are clearly labeled to facilitate their identification. We thus envision PowerDuck improving and complementing existing data sets of substations, which are often generated synthetically, thus enhancing the security of power grids.

Abstract:As the growth of IoT networks increases exponentially, the number of cyber attacks is also increasing on IoT networks day-by-day. This results in the vital requirement of cyber security mechanisms to secure IoT networks from cyberattacks. To build such a security mechanism, researchers and cybersecurity practitioners need relevant IoT datasets. However, until now, only a few publicly available IoT network intrusion datasets exist in the literature. Moreover, these datasets lack coverage of IoT network traffic containing IoT application layer protocols like AMQP, XMPP, STOMP, etc. and various IoT-based attacks. So, in this work, we generate a new realistic and comprehensive IoT network intrusion dataset called MU-IoT for IoT cybersecurity. The network traffic contained in the MU-IoT dataset is collected from the Manipur University (MU) IoT Smart Lab, which is our own IoT network testbed. The testbed includes more than 30 devices, which include both physical and emulated IoT devices, and general-purpose devices such as laptops, desktops, servers, etc., that are usually present in a Smart Lab. The dataset contains normal network traffic generated from various applications and attack network traffic comprised of 16 attack types, including IoT-based attacks, which are categorized into six categories. From the testbed, we collected 22.8 GB of raw network data and extracted 15.8 GB of preprocessed network data by using our own feature extraction approach. The preprocessed network data contains 121 flow-based features and 3 class labels of more than 34.8 million records. Additionally, this dataset covers extensive IoT-specific application protocols and a variety of normal network behaviours, which is a notable advantage over existing datasets. The MU-IoT dataset can be utilized to develop and validate machine learning-based Intrusion Detection and Mitigation Systems (IDMS). Moreover, the MU-IoT dataset helps to validate the centralized and federated learning-based IDMS. In addition, we also include the prior exploratory data analysis with the ranking of the features given by various feature selection algorithms as well as from our own feature ranking approach and the performance given by some common machine learning algorithms, as a future reference to the research community. Abstract:Nowadays, the Internet of Things (IoT) concept plays a pivotal role in society and brings new capabilities to different industries. The number of IoT solutions in areas such as transportation and healthcare is increasing and new services are under development. In the last decade, society has experienced a drastic increase in IoT connections. In fact, IoT connections will increase in the next few years across different areas. Conversely, several challenges still need to be faced to enable efficient and secure operations (e.g., interoperability, security, and standards). Furthermore, although efforts have been made to produce datasets composed of attacks against IoT devices, several possible attacks are not considered. Most existing efforts do not consider an extensive network topology with real IoT devices. The main goal of this research is to propose a novel and extensive IoT attack dataset to foster the development of security analytics applications in real IoT operations. To accomplish this, 33 attacks are executed in an IoT topology composed of 105 devices. These attacks are classified into seven categories, namely DDoS, DoS, Recon, Web-based, brute force, spoofing, and Mirai. Finally, all attacks are executed by malicious IoT devices targeting other IoT devices. The dataset is available on the CIC Dataset website.

Abstract:In an increasingly digitalized world, cybersecurity has emerged as a critical component of safeguarding sensitive information and infrastructure from malicious threats. The threat actors are often in line or even one step ahead of the defense, causing the increasing reliance of security teams on artificial intelligence while trying to detect zero-day attacks. However, most of the cybersecurity solutions based on artificial intelligence that can be found in the literature are trained and tested on reference datasets that are at least five or more years old, which gives a vague insight into their security performances. Moreover, they often tend to be designed as isolated, self-focused components. The aim of this paper is to design and implement a modular network intrusion detection architecture capable of simulating cyberattacks based on real-world scenarios while evaluating its defense capabilities. The architecture is designed as a full pipeline from real-time network data collection and transformation to threat-information presentation and visualization, with a pre-trained artificial intelligence module at its core. Well-known components like CICFlowMeter, Prometheus, and Grafana are used and modified to fit our data preparation and core modules to form the proposed architecture for real-world network traffic security monitoring. For the sake of cyberattack simulation, the proposed architecture is situated within a virtual environment, surrounded by the Kali Linux-based penetration simulation agent on one side and a vulnerable agent on the other. The intrusion detection artificial intelligence module is trained on the CICIDS-2017 dataset, and it is demonstrated using the proposed architecture that, despite being trained on an outdated dataset, the trained module is still effective in detecting sophisticated modern attacks. Two case studies are given to illustrate how modular architectures and virtual environments can be valuable tools to assess the security properties of artificial intelligence-based solutions through simulation in real-world scenarios.

Abstract:Traditional reactive approach of blacklisting botnets fails to adapt to the rapidly evolving landscape of cyberattacks. An automated and proactive approach to detect and block botnet hosts will immensely benefit the industry. Behavioral analysis of botnet is shown to be effective against a wide variety of attack types. Current works, however, focus solely on analyzing network traffic from and to the bots. In this work we take a different approach of analyzing the chain of commands input by attackers in a compromised host. We have deployed several honeypots to simulate Linux shells and allowed attackers access to the shells to collect a large dataset of commands. We have further developed an automated mechanism to analyze these data. For the automation we have developed a system called CYbersecurity information Exchange with Privacy (CYBEX-P). Finally, we have done a sequential analysis on the dataset to show that we can successfully predict attacker behavior from the shell commands without analyzing network traffic like previous works.

Abstract:Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems monitor and control physical processes associated with the critical infrastructure. Weaknesses in the application layer protocols, however, leave SCADA networks vulnerable to attack. In response, cyber security researchers have developed myriad intrusion detection systems. Researchers primarily rely on unique threat models and the corresponding network traffic data sets to train and validate their intrusion detection systems. This leads to a situation in which researchers cannot independently verify the results, cannot compare the effectiveness of different intrusion detection systems, and cannot adequately validate the ability of intrusion detection systems to detect various classes of attacks. Indeed, a common data set is needed that can be used by researchers to compare intrusion detection approaches and implementations. This paper describes four data sets, which include network traffic, process control and process measurement features from a set of 28 attacks against two laboratory-scale industrial control systems that use the MODBUS application layer protocol. The data sets, which are freely available, enable effective comparisons of intrusion detection solutions for SCADA systems.
Characterizing Cyber Attacks against Space Systems with Missing Data: Framework and Case Study

Abstract:Cybersecurity of space systems is an emerging topic, but there is no single dataset that documents cyber attacks against space systems that have occurred in the past. These incidents are often scattered in media reports while missing many details, which we dub the missing-data problem. Nevertheless, even "low-quality" datasets containing such reports would be extremely valuable because of the dearth of space cybersecurity data and the sensitivity of space systems which are often restricted from disclosure by governments. This prompts a research question: How can we characterize real-world cyber attacks against space systems? In this paper, we address the problem by proposing a framework, including metrics, while also addressing the missing-data problem, by "extrapolating" the missing data in a principled fashion. To show the usefulness of the framework, we extract data for 72 cyber attacks against space systems and show how to extrapolate this "low-quality" dataset to derive 4,076 attack technique kill chains. Our findings include: cyber attacks against space systems are getting increasingly sophisticated; and, successful protection against on-path and social engineering attacks could have prevented 80% of the attacks.

Abstract:Software-Defined Networking (SDN) outperforms conventional networks in terms of programmability, management, flexibility, and efficiency. This is because SDN separates the control and data planes. The centralised control of devices aids in the prevention of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks. The controller has a larger network perspective and has the ability to filter network traffic in order to detect harmful flows. The separation of the control and data planes provided benefits, but it is vulnerable to DDoS attacks. DDoS assaults are difficult to detect and resist in real-time. This is only possible if appropriate features for attack detection are chosen. We intend to employ feature selection methods such as BORUTA, IRelief, Random Forest, Information Gain and Chi-Square Test to obtain the most relevant features for DDoS detection. Moreover, we have devised a strategy to detect and mitigate DDoS attack using tracebacking approach through ONOS Flood Defender (OFD) Application. The application effectively detects different DDoS attack traffic using XGBoost and Multilayer Perceptron algorithms with 99% accuracy and least testing times without adding unnecessary load to the system and mitigates the attack in approximately 3.2 s using tracebacking approach. We have performed our experiment on four benchmark datasets CIC-DoS 2017, CIC-DDoS 2019, CIC-IDS 2018 and InSDN. We have evaluated the trade-off between detection accuracy and testing time in order to determine the most effective detection model for addressing DDoS attacks on SDN networks.

Abstract:The increasing number of attacks against automation systems such as SCADA and their network infrastructure have demonstrated that there is a need to secure those systems. Unfortunately, directly applying existing ICT security mechanisms to automation systems is hard due to constraints of the latter, such as availability requirements or limitations of the hardware. Thus, the solution privileged by researchers is the use of network-based intrusion detection systems (N-IDS). One of the issue that many researchers encounter is how to validate and evaluate their N-IDS. Having access to a real and large automation systems for experimentation is almost impossible as companies are not inclined to give access to their systems due to obvious concerns. The few public traffic datasets that could be used for off-line experiments are either synthetic or collected at small testbeds. In this paper, we will describe and characterize a public traffic dataset collected at the HVAC management system of a university campus. Although the dataset contains only packet headers, we believe that it can help researchers, in particular designers of flow-based IDS, to validate their solutions under more realistic conditions. Abstract:In the contemporary cybersecurity landscape, robust attack detection mechanisms are important for organizations. However, the current state of research in Software-Defined Networking (SDN) suffers from a notable lack of recent SDN-OpenFlow-based datasets. This study seeks to bridge this gap by introducing a novel dataset for intrusion detection in Software-Defined Networking named SDNFlow. The dataset, derived from OpenFlow statistics gathered from real traffic, integrates a comprehensive range of network activities. An empirical evaluation leveraging diverse Machine and deep Learning algorithms was performed. Namely, Logistic regression, decision tree, random forest, K-nearest neighbors, Support Vector Machines, and Multilayer Perceptron were tested getting pretty good results with a precision average of 98% to 99% in binary classification and from 97% to 99% in multiclass classification depending of the attack, we highlight the efficacy of K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) for traffic classification, particularly in detecting DDoS attacks and port scanning.
