Abstract:New definitions of fractional derivative with non-singular kernels are proposed recently. In the present paper, we apply the classical and new definitions of fractional derivative to four fractional viscoelastic models, namely, fractional Maxwell model, fractional Kelvin-Voigt model, fractional Zener model and fractional Poynting-Thomson model. For each fractional viscoelastic model, the stress relaxation modulus, creep compliance and dynamic modulus are derived analytically under the classical and new fractional derivative definitions. The performance of these models under different fractional derivative definitions is further compared. The results show that the fractional Zener model and fractional Poynting-Thomson model are equivalent in all conditions. Compared with the classical fractional derivative definition with a power function kernel, the fractional derivative definition with a logarithmic function kernel can be used to describe the ultraslow creep and relaxation behaviors. However, the performance of fractional Maxwell model with the exponential function kernel is close to that of integer-order Maxwell model. Fractional Maxwell model and fractional Zener model with the Mittag-Leffler function kernel do not provide accurate descriptions of the stress relaxation modulus at shortest time and the storage modulus at highest frequency. Thus, specific modification is needed when applying the new definitions of fractional derivative to viscoelasticity.

Abstract:This work applies a fractional flow model to describe a time-variant behavior of non-Newtonian substances. Specifically, we model the physical mechanism underlying the thixotropic and anti-thixotropic phenomena of non-Newtonian flow. This study investigates the behaviors of cellulose suspensions and SMS pastes under constant shear rate. The results imply that the presented model with only two parameters is adequate to fit experimental data. Moreover, the parameter of fractional order is an appropriate index to characterize the state of given substances. Its value indicates the extent of thixotropy and anti-thixotropy with positive and negative order respectively.

Abstract:This study presents comparison of our recently formulated two compartmental model with General fractional derivative (GFD) and Korsmeyer-Peppas, Makoid-Banakar and Kopcha diffusion models. We have used our GFD model to study the release of gentamicin in poly (vinyl alcohol)/chitosan/gentamicin (PVA/CHI/Gent) hydrogel aimed for wound dressing in medical treatment of deep chronical wounds. The PVA/CHI/Gent hydrogel was prepared by physical cross linking of poly(vinyl alcohol)/chitosan dispersion using freezing-thawing method, and then was swollen for 48 h in gentamicin solution, at 37?C. Different physico-chemical (FTIR, SEM), mechanical and biological (cytotoxicity, antibacterial activity) properties have been determined. The concentration of released gentamicin was determined using a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled with mass spectrometry (MS). The ratio between concentration of released gentamicin and initial concentration of gentamicin in the hydrogel was monitored for the prolonged time period in order to obtain gentamicin release profile. It was proven that our novel diffusion GFD model better fitted with experimental data, and enabled the determination of diffusion coefficient precisely for the entire time period.

Investigation of Fractional Compartmental Models with Application to Amiodarone Drug Diffusion in Pharmacokinetics

Abstract:This paper presents three fractional models formulated from a classical Pharmacokinetics compartmental system: commensurable, non-commensurable, and implicit non-commensurable models. Their distinguishing characteristics are further examined comprehensively. Because analytic solutions for such models are typically challenging to obtain, we study the application of the Fractional Finite Difference Method (FFDM) to simulate approximate solutions. The characteristic of the non-commensurable model is shown to be incompatible with the concept of mass balance. However, it appeared to outlast fractional calculus theory when simulating anomalous kinetics. We proved this by fitting the proposed fractional and classical models to an experimental data set (amiodarone) and estimated the parameters using the least-square approach. The classical model diverged, but the non-commensurable model predicted a fit comparable to the other two fractional models. The fractional models described anomalous diffusion better than classical theories. The numerical results showed that the proposed numerical method is equally efficient in solving any complex compartmental models, as they performed well in simulations for the classic example of the model.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to provide a fractional generalization of the Gompertz law via a Caputo-like definition of fractional derivative of a function with respect to another function. In particular, we observe that the model presented appears to be substantially different from the other attempt of fractional modifications of this model, since the fractional nature is carried along by the general solution even in its asymptotic behavior for long times. We then validate the presented model by employing it as a reference frame to model three biological systems of peculiar interest for biophysics and environmental engineering, namely: dark fermentation, photofermentation and microalgae biomass growth.

Abstract:Enzyme reactions have numerous applications in diverse disciplines of science like chemistry, biology and biomechanics. In this study, we examine the role and act of enzymes in chemical reactions which is considered in the frame of fractional order model. The proposed model includes system of four equations which are studied via Caputo fractional operator. The systems of non-linear equations are evaluated by a semi-analytical approach called -homotopy analysis transform method. The uniqueness and existence of the solutions has been investigated through fixed point theorem. The solutions of the proposed model are achieved through the considered method and the obtained outcomes are in the form of series which shows rapid convergence. The solutions are computed and graphs are plotted for the obtained results using mathematica software. The achieved results by the proposed method are unique and illustrate the significant dynamics of the considered model via 3D plots and graphs. The results of this study demonstrate the importance and effectiveness of projected derivative and technique in the analysis of time dependent fractional mathematical models. This study also gives an idea to extend the applications of enzymatic reactions in drug development, bio mechanics, and chemical reactions in various cellular metabolisms. Also, enzymatic reactions have a vital role in the fields of the food industry for processing food, in biotechnology for the manufacture of biofuels, and in metabolic engineering to design metabolic pathways.

Abstract:In this work, we present and analyse a system of coupled partial differential equations, which models tumour growth under the influence of subdiffusion, mechanical effects, nutrient supply, and chemotherapy. The subdiffusion of the system is modelled by a time fractional derivative in the equation governing the volume fraction of the tumour cells. The mass densities of the nutrients and the chemotherapeutic agents are modelled by reaction diffusion equations. We prove the existence and uniqueness of a weak solution to the model via the Faedo--Galerkin method and the application of appropriate compactness theorems. Lastly, we propose a fully discretised system and illustrate the effects of the fractional derivative and the influence of the fractional parameter in numerical examples.

Abstract:We examine the fractional derivative of composite functions and present a generalization of the product and chain rules for the Caputo fractional derivative. These results are especially important for physical and biological systems that exhibit multiple spatial and temporal scales, such as porous materials and clusters of neurons, in which transport phenomena are governed by a fractional derivative of slowly varying parameters given in terms of elementary functions. Both the product and chain rules of the Caputo fractional derivative are obtained from the expansion of the fractional derivative in terms of an infinite series of integer order derivatives. The crucial step in the practical implementation of the fractional product rule relies on the exact evaluation of the repeated integral of the generalized hypergeometric function with a power-law argument. By applying the generalized Euler's integral transform, we are able to represent the repeated integral in terms of a single hypergeometric function of a higher order. We demonstrate the obtained results by the exact evaluation of the Caputo fractional derivative of hyperbolic tangent which describes dark soliton propagation in the non-linear media. We conclude that in the most general case both fractional chain and product rules result in an infinite series of the generalized hypergeometric functions.

Abstract:We introduce a new generalized Caputo-type fractional derivative which generalizes Caputo fractional derivative. Some characteristics were derived to display the new generalized derivative features. Then, we present an adaptive predictor corrector method for the numerical solution of generalized Caputo-type initial value problems. The proposed algorithm can be considered as a fractional extension of the classical Adams-Bashforth-Moulton method. Dynamic behaviors of some fractional derivative models are numerically discussed. We believe that the presented generalized Caputo-type fractional derivative and the proposed algorithm are expected to be further used to formulate and simulate many generalized Caputo type fractional models.

Abstract:Computational biomechanics plays an important role in biomedical engineering: using modeling to understand pathophysiology, treatment and device design. While experimental evidence indicates that the mechanical response of most tissues is viscoelastic, current biomechanical models in the computational community often assume hyperelastic material models. Fractional viscoelastic constitutive models have been successfully used in literature to capture viscoelastic material response; however, the translation of these models into computational platforms remains limited. Many experimentally derived viscoelastic constitutive models are not suitable for three-dimensional simulations. Furthermore, the use of fractional derivatives can be computationally prohibitive, with a number of current numerical approximations having a computational cost that is <math>O(NT2)</math> and a storage cost that is <math>O(NT)</math>(<math>NT</math> denotes the number of time steps). In this paper, we present a novel numerical approximation to the Caputo derivative which exploits a recurrence relation similar to those used to discretize classic temporal derivatives, giving a computational cost that is <math>O(NT)</math> and a storage cost that is fixed over time. The approximation is optimized for numerical applications, and an error estimate is presented to demonstrate the efficacy of the method. The method, integrated into a finite element solid mechanics framework, is shown to be unconditionally stable in the linear viscoelastic case. It was then integrated into a computational biomechanical framework, with several numerical examples verifying the accuracy and computational efficiency of the method, including in an analytic test, in an analytic fractional differential equation, as well as in a computational biomechanical model problem.

Abstract:Fractal-fractional derivatives are more general than the fractional derivative and classical derivative in terms of order. Fractal-fractional derivative is used in those models where the classical continuum hypothesis theory fails. More precisely, these derivative operators are used where the surface or space is discontinuous, e.g., porous medium. Fractal-fractional derivative is considered advance tool to analyze the fluid dynamic model more than fractional and classical model. Given the extensive applicability of fractal-fractional derivatives, the current analysis focuses on investigating the behavior of a non-linear Walter’s-B fluid model under the influence of time-varying temperature and concentration During the simulation process, we have also taken into account the effects of first-order chemical reactions, Soret numbers, thermal radiation, Joule heating, and viscous dissipation of energy. A magnetic field with a strength of B0 was applied to the left plate in the transverse direction. The classical mathematical model was first developed using relative constitutive equations and later generalized with the fractal-fractional derivative operator. Numerical solutions to the generalized model have been obtained using the finite difference method. Various graphs are drawn from the obtained numerical solutions to study the influence of physical parameters on the rheology of Walter’s-B fluid. It has been observed that by varying the fractional and fractal order of the generalized model, one can easily derive fractal, fractional, and classical models.

Abstract:This paper studies the analytical solutions of the fractional fluid models described by the Caputo derivative. We combine the Fourier sine and the Laplace transforms. We analyze the influence of the order of the Caputo derivative the Prandtl number, the Grashof numbers, and the Casson parameter on the dynamics of the fractional diffusion equation with reaction term and the fractional heat equation. In this paper, we notice that the order of the Caputo fractional derivative plays the retardation effect or the acceleration. The physical interpretations of the influence of the parameters of the model have been proposed. The graphical representations illustrate the main findings of the present paper. This paper contributes to answering the open problem of finding analytical solutions to the fluid models described by the fractional operators.

Abstract:Viscoelasticity and related phenomena are of great importance in the study of mechanical properties of material especially, biological materials. Certain materials show some complex effects in mechanical tests, which cannot be described by standard linear equation (SLE) mostly owing to shape memory effect during deformation. Recently, researchers have been applying fractional calculus in order for probing viscoelasticity of such materials with a high precision. Fractional calculus is a powerful tool for modeling complex phenomenon. In this tutorial based paper, we try present clear descriptions of the fractional calculus, its techniques and its implementation. The intention is to keep the details to a minimum while still conveying a good idea of what and how can be done with this powerful tool. We try to expose the reader to the basic techniques that are used to solve the fractional equations analytically and/or numerically. More specifically, modeling the shape memory phenomena with this powerful tool are studied from different perspectives, as well as presented some physical interpretation in this case. Moreover, in order to show the relationship between fractional models and standard linear equations, a fractal system comprising spring and damper elements is considered, and the constitutive equation is approximated with a fractional element. Finally, after a brief literature review, two fractional models are utilized to investigate the viscoelasticity of the cell, and the comparison is made among them, experimental data, and previous models. Verification results indicate that not only does the fractional model match the experimental data well, but it also can be a good substitute for previously used models.

Abstract:This paper aims to incorporate the fractional derivative viscoelastic model into a finite element analysis. Firstly, based on the constitutive equation of the fractional derivative three-parameter solid model (FTS), the constitutive equation is discretized by using the Grünwald–Letnikov definition of the fractional derivative, and the stress increment and strain increment relationship and Jacobian matrix are obtained by using the difference method. Subsequently, we degrade the model to establish stress increment and strain increment relationships and Jacobian matrices for the fractional derivative Kelvin model (FK) and fractional derivative Maxwell model (FM). Finally, we further degrade the fractional derivative viscoelastic model to derive stress increment and strain increment relationships and Jacobian matrices for a three-component solid model and Kelvin and Maxwell models. Based on these developments, a UMAT subroutine is implemented in ABAQUS 6.14 finite element software. Three different loading modes, including static load, dynamic load, and mobile load, are analyzed and calculated. The calculations primarily involve a convergence analysis, verification of numerical solutions, and comparative analysis of responses among different viscoelastic models.

Abstract:Compartmental models based on coupled differential equations of fractional order have been widely employed in the literature for modeling. An abstraction of these models is given by a system with polynomial vector field. We investigate the use of power series for solving generic polynomial differential equations in any dimension, with Caputo fractional derivative. As is well known, power series convert a continuous formulation into a discrete system of difference equations, which are easily solved by recursion. The novelty of this paper is that we rigorously prove that the series converge on a neighborhood of the initial instant, which is an analogue of the Cauchy–Kovalevskaya theorem. Besides, these series are proved to be continuous with respect to the fractional index. For applications, a general-purpose symbolic implementation of truncated power series is developed, and its execution is illustrated for the fractional SIR epidemiological model.

Abstract:The aim of this study is to develop and validate a unifying kinetic model for microvascular transport by introducing an impulse response function that incorporates essential physiological parameters and integrates key features of existing models. This new methodology combines a one-compartment model of fractional order with a model that uses the gamma distribution to describe the distribution of capillary transit times. Central to this model are two primary parameters: , representing the kurtosis of residue times, and , signifying the width of the distribution of capillary transit times within a tissue voxel. To validate this proposed model, data from dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCI-MRI) were employed and the findings were compared with three existing models. Using the Akaike information criterion for model selection, the results demonstrate that the integrative model, especially at elevated blood flow rates, frequently offers superior fits in comparison to constrained models.

Abstract:This paper deals with the fractional derivatives from the beginning of the definition. Based on the conception of the Minkowski's space-time, a revised version of the definition is given. The new version of the definition possesses the properties of locality, shift invariant, served as the coefficients of the Taylor's expansions, Leibnitz's rule etc., which the classical derivative have. The new fractional derivatives can be got by local differential analysis and to model the fractional differential equations, too. Moreover, we take the fractional derivative to analyze the functions of time processes, which are expressed by generalized Taylor's expansions, and to look back upon the histories based on the information of nowadays. The theory is applied to the prediction and gets some interesting results, too. Finally, numerical formula for calculating the fractional derivatives and some examples of the mathematical modeling for fractional differential equation are given.
A Stochastic Simulation Method for Fractional Order Compartment Models

Abstract:Our study focuses on fractional order compartment models derived from underlying physical stochastic processes, providing a more physically grounded approach compared to models that use the dynamical system approach by simply replacing integer-order derivatives with fractional order derivatives. In these models, inherent stochasticity becomes important, particularly when dealing with the dynamics of small populations far from the continuum limit of large particle numbers. The necessity for stochastic simulations arises from deviations of the mean states from those obtained from the governing equations in these scenarios. To address this, we introduce an exact stochastic simulation algorithm designed for fractional order compartment models, based on a semi-Markov process. We have considered a fractional order resusceptibility SIS model and a fractional order recovery SIR model as illustrative examples, highlighting significant disparities between deterministic and stochastic dynamics when the total population is small. Beyond its modeling applications, the algorithm presented serves as a versatile tool for solving fractional order differential equations via Monte Carlo simulations.

Abstract:A reaction-diffusion system can be represented by the Gray-Scott model. In this study, we discuss a one-dimensional time-fractional Gray-Scott model with Liouville-Caputo, Caputo-Fabrizio-Caputo, and Atangana-Baleanu-Caputo fractional derivatives. We utilize the fractional homotopy analysis transformation method to obtain approximate solutions for the time-fractional Gray-Scott model. This method gives a more realistic series of solutions that converge rapidly to the exact solution. We can ensure convergence by solving the series resultant. We study the convergence analysis of fractional homotopy analysis transformation method by determining the interval of convergence employing the ħ u , v -curves and the average residual error. We also test the accuracy and the efficiency of this method by comparing our results numerically with the exact solution. Moreover, the effect of the fractionally obtained derivatives on the reaction-diffusion is analyzed. The fractional homotopy analysis transformation method algorithm can be easily applied for singular and nonsingular fractional derivative with partial differential equations, where a few terms of series solution are good enough to give an accurate solution.
