Abstract:Urban land cover changes impose multiple sources of contamination that severely degrade groundwater quality. The present study evaluates the seasonal assessment of groundwater quality in the unplanned urbanized city of Vellore, Tamil Nadu, India using hydrogeochemical analysis, multivariate statistical analysis and LULC map using GIS techniques. A total number of 96 groundwater samples were collected and analyzed in the year 2022. The Piper diagram shows that groundwater is dominated by Mixed Ca-Na-HCO 3 , Mixed Ca–Mg–Cl and Na-Cl-SO 4 , water types. Exceedances of BIS limits were observed for parameters such as Ca, Mg, K, Cl, NO 3 , F and Coliforms during all the seasons in most of the samples. Principal component analysis (PCA) divides the water quality parameters into strong and moderate loading. Q mode of Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (HCA) reveals three clusters: residential, commercial and mixed zones, whereas R modes exhibited dominant parameters such as NO 3 , Cl, TDS, Mg, F and Na. Both, high loading in PCA and the samples of Q mode and R mode exceeding the BIS-2012, limits clearly indicates that, the groundwater of this region is highly affected by the indicators of significant urban and geogenic influence. Further, the overlay analysis of Land Use and Land Cover map and groundwater samples, shows clear evident that the indicators present in the groundwater is corresponding to the urban activities of the study area. Therefore, this comprehensive study in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, will shed light on the sources of contaminants affecting groundwater quality and how they change with the seasons through the use of an integrated approach.

Abstract:Geospatial maps can show how the ineffective operations of inactive mines affect water and aquifer quality. As such, the purpose of this study is to assess the impact of mining and irrigation on the aquifer ecosystem through the evaluation of LULC and slope maps through the application of Landsat 8 OLI/TIRS and DEM data. A total of 50 groundwater samples were prepared from villages in the close proximity to inactive mines during pre and post monsoon periods in 2021. The results of the analysis revealed alarming statistics, that 14% of groundwater samples exceeded the WHO nitrate limit in pre & post monsoon season, indicating a high-risk in the study area. According to guidelines (USEPA, 2014), 34% in pre-monsoon and 26% post-monsoon of samples exceeded the THI levels for adults and children respectively, indicating non-carcinogenic health risks. In addition, 80% of the samples in both seasons exhibited high NPI values, indicating nitrate contamination associated with blue baby syndrome. From the Geospatial analysis the findings from the LULC classification indicate that there has been a significant increase in cropland area from 2016 to 2021 due to changes in forest land, fallow land, and water resources. These problems have been exacerbated by the expansion of cultivated land, which has increased from 71.1 square kilometers in 2016 to 118 square kilometers in 2021, accounting for 13.1% of the total area. This expansion, coupled with elevated water body resource availability, has compounded the nitrate pollution including in intensely irrigated regions. The slope map analysis revealed that the inactive mines occur at low slope, high rainfall areas and these are compounded by runoff from other sources such as domestic and agricultural wastes. For these matters, sealing and remediating these inactive mines is essential so as to prevent further nitrate leakage.

Abstract:Groundwater is particularly vulnerable to pollution in places with a high population density and extensive human usage of the land, especially in southern parts of Tirupati, India. To assess this, 60 bore-well samples were obtained and assessed for physical specifications, ion chemistry, and heavy metals during the pre- and post-monsoon seasons 2022. The current investigation employed a modified integrated water quality index (IWQI), conventional graphical and human health risk assessment (HHRA) of nitrates and heavy metals to know the groundwater chemistry and its detrimental health effects on humans. The major ions were analyzed using American public health association (APHA) standards, whereas heavy metals were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Additionally, pH Redox Equilibrium and C (PHREEQC), a geochemical model written in C programming language was employed to determine the saturation indices of mineral facies and ArcGIS 10.3.1 was used for spatial distribution patterns of IWQI. Then, the HHRA of nitrates and heavy metals was performed using United States environmental protection agency (US EPA) guidelines. The noteworthy outcomes include elevated levels of Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , Cl − , NO 3 − , Cu, Fe, Mn, and Pb, demonstrating rock-water interaction, silicate weathering, Ca-Mg-HCO3 followed by mixed water facies, dissolution/precipitation, reverse exchange, and anthropogenic contamination are the major controlling processes in groundwater of southern Tirupati, India. The modified IWQI reveals that most groundwater samples (38%) fall under the bad quality class, with (47%) in the poor quality class and only (15%) classified as medium quality class in pre- and post-monsoon seasons. Elevated IWQI were observed in all directions except in the east, which is suitable for drinking. Moreover, the major hazard quotient (HQ) and hazard index (HI) for nitrates (NO 3 − ) and heavy metals like copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) are above the critical value of 1, revealing potential risk to humans, especially infants, followed by children and adults, entailing the instantaneous implementation of proper remedial measures and stringent policies to reduce the risk associated with groundwater pollution in the southern parts of Tirupati.

Abstract:The quality of groundwater plays an important role in human health, and it majorly influences the agricultural process in the southern part of India. The present study mainly focused on evaluating the quality of groundwater used for domestic purpose in semi-arid regions of the southern part of India. The samples were collected in 36 locations, covering the entire investigation zone. The collected samples were analyzed for various physical and chemical characteristics of groundwater and compared with the world health organization standards. The entropy-weighted water quality index (EWQI) of the groundwater revealed that 16.67% of the samples required primary-level treatment before they could be used for drinking purposes. About 72.23% of the samples were in the good-to-medium category for drinking purposes, as was identified through weighted overlay analysis. The ionic relationship plot was used to identify the source of contamination and it revealed that carbonate weathering and anthropogenic activities are the primary sources of groundwater contamination. The present results show the contaminated zones and offer more helpful solutions to strengthen the water management policy in the study region.

Abstract:Water plays an essential role in sustaining life on Earth as an indispensable natural resource. In recent decades, dependence on groundwater for domestic and industrial purposes has become inevitable. The Ranipet industrial environs (RIE) has many tanneries and chemical industries, which affects the groundwater quality. This study assessed groundwater quality and its suitability for domestic, agricultural, and human health risk assessments. 40 groundwater samples (28 open wells and 12 bore wells) were collected during pre-monsoon 2022 and analyzed by employing multivariate statistics, standard scatter plots, irrigation indices, and health risk assessment. The results of hydrogeochemical analysis and multivariate statistics affirmed that electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), calcium (Ca 2+ ), and magnesium (Mg 2+ ) have controlled the hydrochemistry of RIE. Cadmium (Cd) at 46% and chromium (Cr) at 33% have contaminated the groundwater in the study area, making it unsuitable for human consumption and irrigation. The agricultural indices analysis results show groundwater quality ranging from very poor to unsuitable making it unsuitable and also affects crop productivity. Hazard index (HI) results infer that Cr and Cd severely contaminated the RIE's groundwater, encompassing 14 villages, making the groundwater unfit for drinking, domestic use, and irrigation. Hazard quotient (HQ) and incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) analysis revealed that 2 in 100 infants and 3 in 1000 people over the age of 63 are likely to develop cancer due to Cr and Cd in the REI. This is a need-of-the-hour problem, addressing this issue with preventive measures to ensure the protection of groundwater sources will lead to achieving the Sustainable Development Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation).

Abstract:Objective (1) To determine baseline demographic, geographic, clinical, and pathologic characteristics of patients who had transoral robotic surgery (TORS) for oropharyngeal cancer. (2) To analyze margin status and unplanned readmission after TORS versus nonrobotic surgery. Study Design Retrospective database review. Setting National Cancer Database (2010-2011). Subjects and Methods Searching the National Cancer Database for adults with oropharyngeal cancer, we identified 877 patients who had TORS and 4269 patients who had nonrobotic surgery. Outcomes of interest included likelihood of adjuvant therapy, margin status, and unplanned readmission. Statistical analysis included chi-square, t tests, and multivariate regression. Results From 2010 to 2011, there was a 67% increase in the use of TORS for oropharyngeal cancer. Compared with patients who had nonrobotic surgery, TORS patients were more likely to be at academic centers (80.8% vs 49.1%, P < .001), to have private insurance (62.2% vs 57.4%, P < .001), and to have human papilloma virus (HPV)–positive tumors (48.3% vs 27.1%, P < .001). TORS (odds ratio, 0.50; 95% CI, 0.39-0.63) and HPV positivity (odds ratio, 0.73; 95% CI, 0.53-0.99) were independently associated with decreased likelihood of adjuvant chemoradiation versus radiation therapy. TORS patients were less likely to have positive margins than were patients who had nonrobotic surgery (20.2% vs 31.0%, P < .001). High-volume TORS centers had lower rates of positive margins (15.8% vs 26.1%, P < .001) and unplanned readmissions (3.1% vs 6.1%, P < .03) than did low-volume centers. Conclusions TORS is being rapidly adopted by academic and community cancer centers. TORS is associated with a lower rate of positive margins than nonrobotic surgery, and high-volume centers have the lowest rates of positive margins and unplanned readmissions.
Groundwater quality monitoring for assessment of pollution levels and potability using WPI and WQI methods from a part of Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh, India

Abstract:Assessment of pollutants and groundwater quality has attracted much attention worldwide as it is directly linked to human health. In view of this, groundwater samples were collected from a part of Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh, India, to assess groundwater pollution levels and groundwater quality, using Water Pollution Index (WPI) and Water Quality Index (WQI), respectively. Groundwater chemical composition results indicated that groundwater quality was characterized by alkaline and very hard categories with Na + > Mg 2+ > Ca 2+ > K + : HCO 3 > Cl > SO 4 2 > NO 3 > F facies. TDS, TH, Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , Na + , K + , HCO 3 , Cl , NO 3 , and F were above the recommended threshold limits in 100%, 100%, 35%, 100%, 100%, 100%, 100%, 95%, 85%, and 75% of groundwater samples, respectively, for drinking purposes. The geochemical diagram showed base exchange water type (Na + –HCO 3 ) in 50% of groundwater samples resulting from weathering and dissolution of plagioclase feldspars under the influence of soil CO 2 and ion exchange process. The remaining groundwater samples showed saline water type (Na + –Cl ) due to the influence of evaporation, sewage sludge, septic tank leaks, irrigation-return flows, agrochemicals, etc. Ionic relationships of Ca 2+ /Na + vs HCO 3 /Na + , Ca 2+ /Na + vs Mg 2+ /Na + , higher Na + than Ca 2+ , and occurrence of CaCO 3 concretions further supported geogenic processes that alter groundwater chemistry. The positive linear trend of TDS vs Cl + NO 3 /HCO 3 and the relationship of TDS with TH showed anthropogenic input as the main factor, causing groundwater contamination. The WPI indicated two categories of water quality: moderately polluted water (WPI: 0.75–1.00) and highly polluted water (WPI: > 1.00) in 60% and 40% of groundwater samples, which were 81.49% and 18.51% of the study area, respectively. Hierarchical cluster analysis identified three clusters: Cluster I (pH, F , Ca 2+ , K + , NO 3 , Na + , and SO 4 2− ), Cluster II (TH, Mg 2+ , Cl , and HCO 3 ), and Cluster III (TDS) support WPI. Following WQI, 75% and 25% of groundwater samples fell under poor groundwater quality type (WQI: 100–200) and very poor groundwater quality type (> 200), respectively, especially due to the increased concentrations of Mg 2+ , Na + , K + , HCO 3 2− , Cl , NO 3 , and F ions, thereby increasing salinity (TDS) and hardness (TH) in groundwater. Spatially, they covered 85.84% and 14.06% of the study area. The quality of this groundwater is not suitable for drinking purposes. Therefore, the present study suggests preventive measures (safe drinking water supply, desalinization, defluoridation, denitrification, calcium food, and rainwater harvesting) to protect human health.

Abstract:Evaluation of groundwater chemistry and its related health hazard risk for humans is a prerequisite remedial measure. The semi-urban region in southern India was selected to measure the groundwater quality to know the human health risk valuation for different age groups of adults and children through oral intake and skin contact with elevated concentrations of fluoride ( ) and nitrate ( ) groundwater. Groundwater samples were collected from the semi-urban region for pre- and post-rainfall periods and resolute its major ion chemistry. The pH values showed the water is alkaline to neutral in nature. Total dissolved solid (TDS) ranged from 201 to 3612 mg/l and 154 to 3457 mg/l. However, concentration ranges from 0.28 to 5.48 mg/l and 0.21 to 4.43 mg/l; and NO 3 − ranges from 0.09 to 897.28 mg/l and 0.0 to 606.10 mg/l elevating the drinking water standards of in 32% and 38% samples and for about 62% and 38% during pre- and post-rainfall seasons, respectively. The fluoride-bearing minerals are the main sources of elevated concentrations of and excessive use of chemical fertilizers as the chief source of NO 3 − concentration in the aquifer regime. Water quality index (WQI) ranged from 18.3 to 233 and 12.97 to 219.14; 20% and 22% showed poor water quality for pre- and post-rainfall seasons with WQI ≥ 200. Piper plot suggests that 46% and 51% of samples signify carbonate water type ( ), and 32% and 28% of groundwater samples show ( ) type water for pre- and post-rainfall seasons respectively. Gibbs' plot suggests the dominance of water–rock interaction in the aquifer system. Further, the principal component analysis (PCA) revealed three and four components which explain 74.85% and 79.30% of the variance in pre- and post-rainfall seasons with positive loading of EC, TDS, Ca 2+ , Na + , Mg 2+ , K + , , Cl − , and due to mineral weathering and water–rock interactions altering the chemistry for an elevated concentration of and in groundwater. Cluster analyses of chemical variables observed four clusters with a linkage distance of 5 to 25 with a linkage between different variables displaying predominant ion exchange, weathering of silicate and fluoride-rich minerals, salinization of the water, and a high value of concentration, resulting from fertilizers. The hazard quotient (HQ) through ingestion (HQ ing ) and dermal (HQ der ) pathways of F − and NO 3 − was observed higher than its acceptable limit of 1.0 for different age groups indicating the non-carcinogenic effect on human health. Effective strategic measures like defluoridation, denitrification, safe drinking water supply, sanitary facilities, and rainwater harvesting structures are to be implemented in the area for improvement of human health conditions and also bring awareness to the local community about the health hazard effects of using high concentrated and water for daily uses.

Abstract:Sir, Not only are isolates of Streptococcus pneumoniae showing resistance to -lactams, but strains resistant to macrolides, tetracycline, quinolones and trimethoprim–sulphamethoxazole, either alone or in combination, are now being detected. This growing worldwide incidence of multidrugresistant S. pneumoniae has created the need for new, effective oral agents that can be used to treat adult and paediatric pneumococcal infections. Faropenem is a novel penem antimicrobial agent intended for oral administration. Penems share structural similarities with both penicillins and cephalosporins. Preliminary reports indicate that faropenem’s activity is not only broad spectrum (Gram-negative, Gram-positive and some anaerobic bacteria), but also bactericidal. Previous studies have shown that target modifications via altered penicillin-binding proteins cause a significant increase in the MICs of faropenem compared with wild-type strains. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the in vitro activity of faropenem against genetically characterized S. pneumoniae isolates resistant to classes of antibiotics other than -lactams. This in vitro study compared the activities of faropenem and 21 other oral and/or parenteral antimicrobial agents against 385 different recent European clinical isolates, with some of the isolates tested displaying cross-resistance to several of the antibiotics studied, i.e. erythromycin, tetracycline, levofloxacin and trimethoprim–sulphamethoxazole. NCCLS broth microdilution methodology was used. The isolates comprised five groups of genetically characterized pneumococci: (i) those resistant to erythromycin and clindamycin [erm(B) genotype]; (ii) those resistant to erythromycin, but susceptible to clindamycin [mef(A) genotype]; (iii) those resistant to tetracycline [tet(M) genotype]; (iv) those with decreased susceptibility to levofloxacin [mutations in gyr(A) and par(C), combined with efflux activity]; and (v) those resistant to trimethoprim–sulphamethoxazole [mutations in the dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) gene as well as modifications within sul(A), which encodes dihydropteroate synthase (DHPS)]. They were collected from patients with bacteraemia, communityacquired respiratory tract infections or nosocomial pneumonia during international surveillance studies between 1997 and 1999. Only one isolate, which was considered clinically significant according to local criteria, per patient was studied. A total of 215 S. pneumoniae isolates were selected that were resistant to erythromycin: 157 carried the erm(B) gene and 58 the mef(A) gene. All isolates with erm(B) displayed the MLSB phenotype, while all of those with mef(A) had the M phenotype. All 240 tetracycline-resistant S. pneumoniae isolates studied carried the tet(M) gene and none the tet(O) gene. Twenty-five S. pneumoniae isolates were selected that had a decreased susceptibility to levofloxacin (MIC 2 mg/L). Ten of 16 isolates with a levofloxacin MIC of 4 mg/L demonstrated mutations within par(C) encoding Ser-79 Phe, while six of 16 demonstrated mutations encoding Asp-83 Asn. All 16 isolates demonstrated mutations within gyr(A) encoding either a Ser-81 Phe or a Ser-81 Tyr amino acid change. None of these mutations was found in any of the nine isolates with levofloxacin MICs of 2 mg/L and ciprofloxacin MICs of 4 mg/L. A mutation in par(E) was found to result in the amino acid change Ile-460 Val in 18 of the 25 isolates tested. No alteration was found in GyrB. Reserpine lowered ciprofloxacin MICs by between one and four doubling dilutions in 20 of 25 isolates tested with a ciprofloxacin MIC 4 mg/L. Therefore, an efflux system probably contributed to the decreased ciprofloxacin susceptibility in most of the isolates tested. All 50 S. pneumoniae isolates that were resistant to trimethoprim–sulphamethoxazole were also resistant to the two drugs separately. The DHFR genes were sequenced and all isolates displayed the amino acid change Ile-100 Leu, as described previously. With regard to sulphonamide resistance, sequence comparisons of the chromosomal DHPS gene of resistant and susceptible clinical pneumococcal isolates revealed duplications of either three or six bases, resulting in the repetition of one or two amino acids in the region from Arg-58 to Tyr-63 of the DHPS of resistant isolates, as described previously.
Judging the sources of inferior groundwater quality and health risk problems through intake of groundwater nitrate and fluoride from a rural part of Telangana, India

Abstract:AbstractEvaluation of groundwater quality and related health hazards is a prerequisite for taking preventive measures. The rural region of Telangana, India, has been selected for the present study to assess the sources and origins of inferior groundwater quality and to understand the human health risk zones for adults and children due to the consumption of nitrate (NO3-$${\mathrm{NO}}_{3}^{-}$$)- and fluoride (F−)-contaminated groundwater for drinking purposes. Groundwater samples collected from the study region were determined for various chemical parameters. Groundwater quality was dominated by Na+ and HCO3-$${\mathrm{HCO}}_{3}^{-}$$ ions. Piper’s diagram and bivariate plots indicated the carbonate water type and silicate weathering as a main factor and man-made contamination as a secondary factor controlling groundwater chemistry; hence, the groundwater quality in the study region is low. According to the Groundwater Quality Index (GQI) classification, 48.3% and 51.7% of the total study region are excellent (GQI: < 50) and good (GQI: 50 to 100) water quality types, respectively, for drinking purposes. However, NO3-$${\mathrm{NO}}_{3}^{-}$$ ranged from 0.04 to 585 mg/L, exceeding the drinking water quality limit of 45 mg/L in 34% of the groundwater samples due to the effects of nitrogen fertilizers. This was supported by the relationship of NO3-$${\mathrm{NO}}_{3}^{-}$$ with TDS, Na+, and Cl−. The F− content was from 0.22 to 5.41 mg/L, which exceeds the standard drinking water quality limit of 1.5 mg/L in 25% of the groundwater samples. The relationship of F− with pH, Ca2+, Na+, and HCO3-$${\mathrm{HCO}}_{3}^{-}$$ supports the weathering and dissolution of fluoride-rich minerals for high F− content in groundwater. They were further supported by a principal component analysis. The Health Risk Index (HRI) values ranged from 0.20 to 20.10 and 0.36 to 30.90 with a mean of 2.82 and 4.34 for adults and children, respectively. The mean intensity of HRI (> 1.0) was 1.37 times higher in children (5.70) than in adults (4.16) due to the differences in weight size and exposure time. With an acceptable limit of more than 1.0, the study divided the region into Northern Safe Health Zone (33.3% for adults and 28.1% for children) and Southern Unsafe Health Zone (66.7% for adults and 71.9% for children) based on the intensity of agricultural activity. Therefore, effective strategic measures such as safe drinking water, denitrification, defluoridation, rainwater harvesting techniques, sanitary facilities, and chemical fertilizer restrictions are recommended to improve human health and protect groundwater resources.

Abstract:The Suruliyar sub basin in Tamil Nadu, India, was monitored for the assessment of water and soil quality. Surface water, groundwater, and soil samples were collected during the pre-monsoon (June 2016) and post-monsoon (December 2016) seasons within the sub basin area and analyzed for various physical, chemical, and biological properties, namely, pH, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids (TDS), calcium, magnesium, sodium, nitrate, sulfate, fluoride, chloride, biological oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, and total and fecal coliform. All the values were compared with Indian and global standards, and the values for each parameter were within the permissible limits. However, some samples were edging toward the upward limit. Fecal coliforms (14 to 36 counts per 100 ml) were present in the river water, thus indicating anthropogenic contamination. Correlation analysis confirmed that TDS was significantly positively correlated with most of the cations and anions. Groundwater was assessed using several indices, such as the Piper diagram, United States Salinity Laboratory diagram, sodium adsorption ratio, and sodium percentage. Results showed that all the groundwater samples could be used for irrigation purposes; however, the chloride contents exceeded the permissible limit. Soil analysis results showed that all nutrients were within the permissible limits. Drought assessment showed the existence of both dry and wet years occurring most frequently, which might have a strong influence on the quality of water and soil parameters. This study suggests that the monitoring of surface, groundwater, and soil parameters is essential to maintain the sub basin area for ensuring sustainable development in the future.

Abstract:Good quality water for human consumption, irrigation, and industrial use is very important. Today, around the world, water is contaminated by natural processes and human activities. This study aimed to evaluate the suitability of groundwater for drinking and irrigation, identify the source of fluoride and nitrate contamination, and assess the human health risks around the Cauvery River basin in southern India. A total of 30 groundwater samples were collected and analyzed for hydrochemical parameters, including EC, TDS, pH, Ca, Mg, Na, K, HCO 3 , Cl, SO 4 , NO 3 , and F − . The majority of groundwater samples in the study area are used for drinking and irrigation. The pH of groundwater in the study area was observed to be dominantly alkaline. The levels of TDS, Ca, Na, K, F, and TH exceeded the permissible limits recommended by BIS and WHO. Fluoride and nitrate levels in groundwater exceeded the permissible limits for drinking purposes in 43% and 50% of the samples, respectively. The excessive concentration of fluoride and nitrate in groundwater could pose serious human health problems. Fluoride and nitrate concentrations in groundwater vary between 0.1 and 2 mg/l and 12 and 95 mg/l, respectively. Based on the computation of the drinking water quality index, about 73% of groundwater samples were classified as excellent to good. Health risk was assessed for infants, children, and adults using non-carcinogenic risk indices such as hazard quotients (HQ), hazard indexes (HI), total hazard indices (THI), and carcinogenic risk indices (CR). Infants, children, and adults have different total hazards indexes ranging from 1.508 to 5.733, 1.579 to 6.003, and 0.011 to 0.046, respectively. Health risk assessment results indicated that the hazard index and hazard quotient were above the recommended limit of > 1 in most of the samples for infants and children. Non-carcinogenic risk and carcinogenic risks were more likely to affect infants and children rather than adults through ingestion of contaminated water.

Abstract:Groundwater in coastal areas, with surging population and growing settlements, is constantly at risk of pollution. Alappuzha is one of the most well-developed coastal districts in the southwestern Indian state of Kerala and employing various physico-chemical parameters (pH, EC, TDS, alkalinity, hardness, and contents of sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, carbonate, bicarbonate, chloride, sulphate, nitrate, and fluoride), this study aims to evaluate the drinking and irrigation water qualities of its groundwater resources and present their spatial distributions using the GIS platform. In the moderately hard to very hard groundwater of Ca-Mg-SO4 type, the ions dominate with order Ca > Na > Mg > K and HCO 3 > Cl > SO 4 > CO 3 > F. The water quality index (WQI) values (0.85–144, avg., 26.77) established the suitability of drinking water, revealing 53 % and 45 % of samples are lies under the categories of excellent and good, respectively. Only 2 % of the sample are in extremely poor water category. SAR, RSC, Na%, PI, KR and MH indices established that almost all of the groundwater can be used for agriculture, and the samples from northern coast showed vulnerability to contamination.

Abstract:Elevated nitrate concentration in groundwater is a worldwide problem. Continuous exposure to high levels of nitrate in groundwater may cause adverse health effects among residents who use groundwater for consumption. Therefore, this study was conducted to identify the nitrate distribution and its potential health risk assessment from semi-arid region of Peddavagu in Central Telangana (PCT), South India. Groundwater samples were collected from thirty five locations and analyzed for nitrate and other water quality parameters. Nitrate (NO3-) in groundwater was observed to vary from 17 to 120 mg/L, with a mean of 58.74 mg/L. About 57% of samples exceeded the maximum acceptable limit of Indian drinking water standard. About, 40% of groundwater samples drinking water quality index (DWQI) is good, while 60% of groundwater falls in poor quality for drinking purposes. Health risk maps were created based on hazard quotient to quantify the potential health risk of the residents using US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) health risk assessment model. Health risk assessment revealed that mean total hazard index (HItotal) for men, women, and children were found as 1.42E + 00, 1.67E + 00, and 1.95E + 00, respectively. Results exhibited that children are at high health risk than men and women in the PCT. Further, the human exposure to the NO3- contaminated water was above the critical limit of non-carcinogenic risk.
Hydro-geochemical characteristics and quality appraisal of aquifers using multivariate statistics and associated risk assessment in Tarn-Taran district, Punjab, India

Abstract:Monitoring of groundwater is essential in the alluvial region of Tarn-Taran district, western Punjab, India where this freshwater source is being overexploited causing quality deterioration, groundwater depletion and posing serious threats to inhabitants. The present integrated study was conducted to appraise quality and suitability of groundwater for drinking/irrigation purposes, hydro-geochemical characteristics, source identification and associated health risks. In this study, 96% and 51% samples were detected with arsenic (As) and uranium (U), respectively higher than their acceptable limits posing high cancerous risks to local inhabitants via ingestion. Further, the quality indices revealed that groundwater of the study region is appropriate for irrigation but not suitable for drinking purposes. Hydro-geochemical studies showed that 83% of samples belonged to Ca2+-Mg2+-HCO3- type with major contribution of natural geogenic processes like rock-water interactions, silicate and carbonate dissolution along with reverse ion-exchange mechanisms in aquifer chemistry. Multivariate statistics revealed that along with geogenic sources, contribution of anthropogenic activities such as injudicious application of agrochemicals and domestic waste discharge was also very significant. Hazard quotient values for As were found to be 2.119 and 2.743 for children and adults, respectively representing both population groups prone to non-cancerous health risks due to As intake. Children were found to be more vulnerable than adults. This study draws an attention of public and local government about the current status of groundwater pollution in Tarn-Taran district, so that proper remediation steps can be taken to ensure the availability of good quality water.

Abstract:The groundwater quality of Kadavanar watershed, Amaravathy sub-basin, Cauvery river basin, Tamil Nadu, India, was assessed by collecting 147 groundwater samples during April 2016 (pre-monsoon). The Kadavanar watershed area spans for about 2254.66 km2. The areal extent of the hill and forest is 397.08 km2 and the plain or the investigation area is 1857.58 km2. In the study area, sixteen parameters were found to be responsible for the degradation of groundwater quality. The integration of groundwater quality data has been carried out by considering sixteen parameters using GIS technology. The areal extent obtained from the integrated groundwater quality map reveals that nearly 54.02% of the watershed area possesses permissible category (most desirable + maximum allowable) of groundwater. The "most desirable" category of groundwater quality covers 397.08 km2 of the study area and it is located in the northern part (confluent point) as well as the high lineament and weaker plain of the watershed. The rest of the area (854.19 km2) is under mixed category of allowable and not permissible zones and extend over the watershed. It is located in central part of the watershed.

Abstract:Groundwater is a precious natural element which ensures global water, food, and environmental security in the twenty-first century. Systematic monitoring, sustainable utilization, preservation and remediation are critical aspects of efficient groundwater resource management. This study deals with the analysis of spatial variability and trend in groundwater chemistry as well as identification of possible contamination sources in a coastal alluvial basin of eastern India. Pre-monsoon season data of 14 groundwater-quality variables measured in 'leaky confined' and 'confined' aquifers were analyzed for ten years (2012–2021). Mann–Kendall (M–K) test with the Sen's Slope Estimator, Spearman Rank Order Correlation (SROC) and Innovative Trend Analysis (ITA) tests were employed to assess decadal (2012–2021) trends. The analysis of the results indicated that the 'critical' water-quality parameters exceeding the acceptable limits for drinking are TDS, EC, TH, pH, Mg 2+ , Na + , K + , Fe 2+ , HCO 3 ˉ, Clˉ and NO 3 ˉ. Weak negative correlations between rainfall and groundwater elevation for both the aquifers reveal poor rainfall recharge into the aquifers. Therefore, a reduction in groundwater abstraction and augmentation of groundwater recharge is recommended. Trend analysis results indicated that the concentrations of TH, Mg 2+ and Fe 2+ exhibit significant increasing trends in the 'leaky confined aquifer'. In contrast, significant rising trends in TH, Mg 2+ , Na + , Fe 2+ , HCO 3 ˉ and NO 3 ˉ concentrations are identified in the 'confined aquifer'. Further, the SROC test could not detect the trends in groundwater quality in most blocks and for many parameters. On the other hand, the ITA test revealed significant trends in most of the parameters of the two aquifers in almost all the blocks. Trend magnitudes of the groundwater-quality parameters based on the Sen's Slope Estimator and the ITA test vary from –63.7 to 58.65 mg/L/year for TDS, –14 to 39.07 mg/L/year for TH, –1.49 to 4.83 mg/L/year for Mg 2+ , –7.14 to 22.96 mg/L/year for Na + , –0.32 to 0.44 mg/L/year for Fe 2+ , –8.33 to 20.75 mg/L/year for HCO 3 ˉ, –26.52 to 31.01 mg/L/year for Clˉ and 1.29 to 3.76 mg/L/year for NO 3 ˉ over the study area. The results of M–K and ITA tests were found in agreement in all the blocks for both the aquifers. Groundwater contamination in both the aquifers can be attributed to weathering, geogenic processes, mineral dissolution, seawater intrusion, poor recharge pattern and injudicious anthropogenic activities. It is strongly recommended that concerned authorities urgently formulate efficient strategies for managing groundwater quality in the 'leaky confined' and 'confined' aquifers which serve as vital sources of drinking and irrigation water supplies in the study area.

Abstract:The aim of the study was to determine the groundwater characteristics of rural and industrial zones in the Kannur region. In 2011, 25 groundwater data were collected from the centre for water resource development management (CWRDM), and in 2019, 25 groundwater samples from rural and near-industrial areas were collected and analysed for major anions (HCO3-, CO32-, Cl-, NO3- and SO42-), and cations (TH, Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+ and Fe2+) using APHA standards. To better understand the link between water quality parameters, multivariate statistical analysis approaches such as principal component analysis (PCA), hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), correlation matrix analysis (CMA), and Pearson correlation bivariate one-tailed analysis (PCBOTA) were used to analyse the inter-relationship of data. The Inverse Distance Weighed (IDW) method was used to generate the spatial distribution of the groundwater quality index (GWQI). In 2011, the water quality index (WQI) value of groundwater samples was excellent at 24.42% and good at 54.14%, which were used for drinking purposes and moderate at 17.22% and poor at 4.22% for irrigation purposes in this study area. In 2019, excellent 21.62%, good 51.56% were used for drinking purpose, and moderate at 18.14%, and poor at 8.68% for irrigation purposes. By comparing the data with BIS and WHO standards, it is clear that groundwater in Kannur district is of good quality. In groundwater samples, the PCA eigen values were reported in 2011 (84.7%) and 2019 (73.4%) for statistical approaches. This study uses HCA and PCBOTA to analyse the elements, resulting in a better understanding of groundwater quality development. GIS based WQI maps were obtained and utilised to gain a better knowledge of the study area's past and present water quality status. We observed that the quality of groundwater in the study region's north-western portion is insufficient for drinking water.

Abstract:Most water systems that support ecosystems and feed humans are depleted or stressed. Aquifer characteristics, topography, subsurface activities, climate, and geochemical processes regulate groundwater availability, a reliable source of fresh water. Globally, agriculture, industries, and the domestic sector are the three major sectors that consume vast quantities of freshwater resources. Further anthropogenic activities, such as soil leaching, acid rain, fertilizer, pesticides, mining, and other industrial activities, resulted in the release of organic and inorganic pollutants that affected global water resources. In India, groundwater is used in huge quantities, resulting in groundwater depletion of 1 to 2 m a year. Low-income countries face many issues related to water pollution, and the availability of safe water is minimal. In 2019, deaths due to unsafe sanitation accounted for 2.2% of the total global deaths, amounting to 1.2 million people’s deaths. India recorded 6.6% of deaths due to unsafe sanitation in 2019. India and China accounted for around 90.41% and 60.4% of the groundwater utilization for agricultural purposes, respectively. In 2020, China and India utilized vast quantities of nutrients (nitrate and phosphate) for crop growth to enhance crop yield, resulting in the highest nitrate and phosphate concentrations in groundwater. Remediating contaminants from different sources requires knowledge of their concentration, behavior, cycling, and degradation pathways. According to safety guidelines, limiting and optimizing crop organic and inorganic fertilizer, pesticide waste disposal, and empty container disposal can reduce groundwater contamination. The present study summarized groundwater utilization in various sectors, potential sources of groundwater contamination impacts on human health and the environment, preventive measures, and mitigation methods to overcome groundwater pollution.
